Re: Good Intel-Mac group ?
Thanks, Fabian, I should have phrased my question more clearly, I guess, but because I thought that maybe my 10.6.8 was the culprit, I wanted to do that in the proper group. Anyway, it would have read like this: After installing a Flash Player update from 11.9.900, it didn't work anymore on 10.6.8. Now maybe a newer version is working again, but before trying, I thought to ask if anyone had installed the most recent version of Flash Player /Shockwave Flash plugin on 10.6.8 successfully. Fortunately, I can answer that myself, now that I've just installed 13.0.014 and things seem to work as they should. I'm still looking for advice on where to find a nice and lively Intel-Mac group, or maybe a Core Duo group? Then I won't have to irritate Mr Fangy with my questions anymore... By the way, I didn't find an answer on Adobe's pages or their forum. Good Intel-Mac group ?
Which is a good group for Intel-based Macs? There's so many groups that I really don't know which one to pick. Some time ago I bought a Mac Mini Core Dual, and so far I had no problems. But recently, I updated Flash Player and then it didn't work anymore. After some experiments I managed to return to the old version and it worked again. Now I'd like to know what's going on there, and if later versions would work again with my 10.6.8 and Firefox 29.0.1, so if you know a nice and active group for that, let me know! -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Browser g4
When you double-click on a music file, you want not iTunes to open and play it, but QuickTime? If this is what you want to do, that's easy: -In the Finder, do Get Info on a file of the concerned type. -There is a section Open with... in there, where you can select the application you want to open it with. -Activate the checkbox Do this with all files of this type before clicking OK. (I'm not at my Mac right now, so it might be slightly different...) An alternative way is to drag the file's icon onto QuickTime's icon (e.g. in the dock) to open it. You didn't write what kind of music file you want to play, or what happens when you try to open iTunes by itself, what messages come up for example. All that is very useful for troubleshooting! @Clark: ingenious! But if he values his data, he should have a backup, like an external HD or something. Even if he doesn't, I'm sure he can borrow a USB drive to do the transfer job. I guess he had not started on it yet because he wanted to be clear about the entire procedure first, and he wasn't sure how to copy the OS over. I agree with Greg that he should consider doing a fresh OS install, depending on how long he's been working with this system drive, and on how much time he can spend on the install of OS and application software. @Greg: I guess what you say about copying over the OS is about Apple's Drive Utility. Re: Installing New HDD in my G5
Hello! I'm trying to wrap my head around the best way to install the 500GB SATA drive I have bought for storing video files. Currently I'm running a 40GB system disc and 250GB for video projects. I'd like to use the 250GB as the system disc and start using the new 500GB for the video projects. What's the best solution? I guess first thing is to copy all of the video files to somewhere else. I know I should be doing that already : / I then need to clone the 40GB to the 250GB? Will that work? Then take the 40GB out and install the 500GB and then copy the video files over? Yes. Do you have somewhere else to copy the video files to, like a backup HD? Alternatively, if you have a (Firewire preferably) dock to connect the new drive externally, you could copy the files over before you install the 500GB--it's somewhat safer. Re: What Mac to buy - and from where?
Thanks for the confirmation, PH! I didn't include the G4 Mac Mini in my recommendation, as I think it would be a step back from an eMac; otherwise, that would probably be the cheapest solution. One thing I'm not clear about is: which Adobe software has this problem? I have been using CS3 on a PowerMac (so PPC G4) and have moved it recently to an Intel MacMini with no problem at all. Re: What Mac to buy - and from where?
I don't understand all the advice given in here. The simplest solution I see to keep the old software happy would be to get a PowerMac or iMac G5. It doesn't have to be one of the latest even, because all G5 are faster than the eMac, and the older models are cheaper, of course. That will have to do until he can buy another, newer model (anything he can afford) and upgrade the software. That could go in two steps: first the hardware, sometime later the upgrade. No harm using one computer for Adobe and another one in parallel for the rest. (Don: The newest OS supported on PowerMacs is 10.5.8 and that would probably be the recommended one. Re: HP 5100 Laserjet driver for G4 needed
From half-gone memories, I recall: PPDs are not drivers. They are more like parameter files, informing the Laserwriter driver and the application what the printer can do and what it can't: resolution, colours, duplex, etc. As far as I know they have a fixed syntax, but there are special versions that include extra parameters to serve the possibilities of a particular program, e.g. PageMaker. Often desktop publishing programs came with a collection of PPDs. I think the main problems you can get when you use a different printer's PPD are wrong colours or screens. Re: Can’t adjust brightness on ADC monitor
(What's happening? I was sure I had posted this already...) OK, I did my homework better this time and it turns out the button on the screen's frame (Apple Studio Display 17) doesn't bring up the brightness dialog even when it's the only screen connected to the PowerMac. That's not as I remember it, but I can't say 100% sure that it has worked correctly in the past, because I've been working with several such screens. So I looked around where the display prefs are and moved them (there were two files) to the desktop, then restarted. The button's behaviour remained the same: it lights up when pressed, but no dialog box appears. Anyway, no new prefs file was created until I changed the profile of a monitor, which gives me the feeling these display prefs are not involved with this error. Maybe it's hardware, after all? Or the system software? I really don't know. I guess the next step will be to borrow a ADC screen and see how that behaves on this computer, or connect this screen on a different PowerMac. Now implies something has changed...what is it? Do you get the expected behavior back when whatever that is is undone? You should be able to do everything separately on the two monitors. Can’t adjust brightness on ADC monitor
I have two monitors on a PowerMac G4 (dual 500MHz): one is a Viewsonic on DVI, the other an Apple Studio 17 on ADC. Is it normal that I can’t adjust the brightness on the Apple monitor now? There’s no slider for it in the screen’s preferences, and pressing the button on the screen frame doesn’t bring up the usual dialog. Maybe I should mention that both monitors are connected to the same graphics card, a GeForce4 MX (AGP). If this is indeed the common behaviour, my theory is that the OS (10.4.11) can’t get a handle on the Viewsonic’s brightness, and then disables the software control for both. But I think it’s strange, given that other settings can be adjusted for each screen separately. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Glad you got it working. TenFourFox is not just an escape; I think it's the best browser, as long as you don't need Flash video (which may not work properly anyway with a G4). Re: Web Browsing Woes
I didn't know about this downloading, but yes, OpenType fonts are large, so that could be what's going on. Please send us (or me) some of the links, so I can see if they are slow here too, and what kind of fonts they use: website-specific ones, or more standard ones. Then again, there are many different ways to handle fonts; your browser may have settings where you can force it to use only certain fonts, so the download may be avoidable. Or: if these are standard fonts, some browsers may include them already during installation, and then those browsers won't slow down on these pages. OpenType fonts are not really useful on the Mac, because the specific OpenType features work only in Windows; Mac uses AAT, a different font technology, at least up to Snow Leopard AAIK. That may be the reason why Safari doesn't have those fonts installed. In short: see what happens in a different browser; a Windows- originated one like Firefox/TenFourFox could be a good choice. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I finished reviving an iBook G3 (the first white one, Dual USB) from my nephew and it runs Tiger nicely now. Re: 22 Apple LCD - brightness a little uneven
Is this about the Apple Cinema Display, 1600x1024, DVI? All Apple says is: For best results, allow the display to warm up for 30 minutes to reach peak color quality. When displaying a large area of a single color, the color might not appear uniform throughout the area. This symptom can occur if the display has not warmed up. If there's a real problem with the backlight, the power LED will flash: Power light flashes amber in repeating sequence of two short flashes and one long flash. This symptom indicates a problem with the backlights. With 17 displays, it often happens that one or more of the flyback transformers fail, which results in the top or bottom half of the screen being slightly darker, and the power light flashing as described above. I don't know how the backlights are positioned in your screen, but if it's just one corner and the power LED is not flashing, I'd have to guess: maybe the backlight itself is getting old. Re: GMail phasing out basic view?
Thanks, that is something to try. So far, I tried to change two strings on the about:config page (extensions.lastAppVersion and extensions.lastPlatformVersion) from 7.0 to 3.0, and at first it seemed to work, even though those strings were reverted to 7.0 after restarting TenFourFox. But after a few tries GMail started to send me to the standard view again. Maybe it has something to do with cookies as well. There's actually two points in here: 1. If possible, I'd like to get the basic view when I go to mail.google.com using this browser. 2. If that doesn't work, I at least want to get basic view when I go to https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html The first option has the added advantage that the yellow bar across the page You're using GMail in basic view. Update your browser, etc. is not there. if you really need Would I put so much energy into this if I didn't clearly prefer the basic view? I just don't like to wait for stuff I don't need. I'm not on a super-highspeed connection and my computer isn't that fast either. GMail phasing out basic view?
You know that with Google Mail, you can choose basic view (instead of the standard view which loads slower and has more features). Just now I discovered that I can't set this basic view as the default, as I could in the past. So if you have a slow computer or connection and your Gmail account is set to basic view, don't click on standard view anymore, because that will change the default and you can't go back! Actually, my computerconnection are not slow, it's just that I rarely need the extra features and I hate the wait while that standard view is loading. The bad feeling I get from this is that it looks like Google is preparing to phase out the basic view interface altogether. At the moment, you can still get it by clicking on a button while the interface is loading. Or by changing your bookmark to https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html At least, that's what someone on the forum writes. It doesn't work for me. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: GMail phasing out basic view?
It may not be as bad as I thought. One top contributor on the forum answered: GMail recently ceased support for several older versions of all three mainstream browsers - IE, Firefox and Chrome. Consequently many people who do not WANT to use Basic HTML are being directed there because their browser versions can't cope with Standard View. So the usual link in the top bar which allows you to (a) return to Standard View or (b) set Basic as default is currently replaced by the advice to upgrade your browser. I see this in my own Basic HTML view which I use a lot for testing - I probably switch back and forth several times a week.. Once this browser deprecation is no longer new and is over and done with, and everyone knows about it, and understands why they suddenly are in Basic HTML view instead of their preferred Standard view, the top bar message will almost certainly revert to normal. It always has in the past. In the meantime, use the link I gave right back at the top to get to your Basic HTML view and make a new bookmark/shortcut/favourite to use until the usual top bar returns. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. All right, guys, interesting! I didn't know all that! Still, for the original poster it's not relevant, and probably confusing. The bottom line for him doesn't change: he shouldn't be connecting two computers to one HD, and the best solution to use the drive from two computers is to connect it to the 10.4 one and share it, so the 9.2.2 one can mount it over the network. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: 10.3 doesn’t see newer HD?
Thanks for the response. I’m on Digest Mode, and somehow I got these only today. There are two issues here: how to install onto the iBook, and why the iBook doesn’t see a HD in a connected G4 2x500 in Target disk mode. I did the install booting the G4 from the DVD and installing onto the iBook in Target disk mode, but that install didn’t work: it froze quickly, when I was working with Disk Utility, or just in the Finder. Where can I find the error log, so I can try and get a clue what was going on there? Then I tried the other way around (because I suspected the installed system was specific for G4 and gave problems on G3) but as described, the iBook saw one of the internal hard drives on the G4, but not the other one (which is under 128GB) or the DVD. At this point I can’t be sure anymore, but I really think I have done an install this way some time ago, to another G4 that had no DVD drive. Now I’m starting to think the DVD is faulty: I Carbon-copied it onto an external harddisk, then installed to the iBook from that harddisk connected over Firewire. The check during boot goes through without finding problems, with that harddisk and also when I boot the G4 from the DVD, but still. I’m going to Carbon-copy another installed (and working!) system to the iBook. If it works, I blame the DVD, if not, I don’t know anymore. As far as I know, there are no firmware issues involved, but right now it’s just as if this iBook doesn’t work with 10.4. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. 10.3 doesn’t see newer HD?
I’m trying to install 10.4 on an iBook G3 running 10.3. It’s the first white one, the Dual USB, with only a CD drive, and my Tiger installer disk is a DVD. So I connected a G4 Mac (Snakebite) in target mode to use its DVD drive. But the iBook doesn’t see the DVD or the boot drive in the G4, it sees only the second HD in there, the original one with OS 9 installed. I don’t know what’s the problem. More importantly: How do I get the iBook to see the other drives too? The G4 has 10.4.11 installed and the volumes are journaled. If this isn’t possible, I plan to Carbon-copy the DVD onto an external HD with a Firewire port, then do the install with that HD connected to the iBook. I hope that’ll work at least... -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Topic: Removing Heat Sink from Sonnet G4 upgrade card
I’ve been looking around a bit, and my conclusion sofar is: 71 C/160 F is hot, but not too hot for most processors. A little more detail: the max. temperature depends on the model; some go over 80, others only up to 65. Many have a safety switch that kicks in at a certain temperature to avoid damage. CPUs don’t break suddenly at high temperatures, but they age much faster. So in practice it can certainly happen that a CPU (finally) gives up at a time of high load. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Removing Heat Sink from Sonnet G4 upgrade card
If this is the first time you replace a heatsink, then first read up on what is involved. Look on the web, but here's the main points: The metal of the heatsink doesn't sit on the processor directly. There is a thin layer of thermo paste between the two, because otherwise the two hard surfaces would not have proper contact. Sometimes a new heatsink comes with a layer of that stuff applied, or the existing layer is still OK. But to be prepared, you would need a plastic business card (to remove most of the paste), acetone and cotton swabs to remove the rest, then alcohol to really clean the surface. And of course new thermo paste. Maybe you know all this, but I thought it better to make sure and punch in some lines before you damage a nice CPU! Usually, Sonnet upgrades are well-designed, meaning that they have appropriate heatsinks or work with the heatsinks on the CPUs they replace. How do you determine that your model is generating too much heat? Did you tell the support guy the temperature? You're not overclocking it, are you -- or using it on a higher system bus speed than it's meant for? That's my 2¢... -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: More mass bounced emails...
Got another huge boatload of bounced emails today from trinettejohn...@fuse.net - some dating as far back as August of last year. This also happened around April 19 of this year. Maybe the mechanics are like this: some robot sends our G-list postings to that Fusenet address (postmas...@fuse.net) which then gets overloaded and sends us a The user(s) account is temporarily over quota message for each of those postings. (Fortunately, mine are promptly moved to my spam folder. Google Mail isn't perfect, but on such occasions, I'm really happy about it!) Re: Need to Print Thousands of Micro$oft doc scans, Ahhh
I'd like to rather see this as a get to know something new every day. ;-) All right then! When you print something, the system reads the file and sends the DATA to the printer... regardless of the original file format it was saved in. (at least, that's what I understood) You're right. I was still thinking in terms of Postscript printers, but these days most printers just get a bitmap formatted properly for them by the printer driver. That leaves me wondering what a printer's CPU is doing these days. Anyway, the OP might look into a RAM upgrade for that printer. That would be kind of an answer to his question, after all. Saving an uncompressed TIF or an higly compressed JPG takes the same time (on a modern Mac), but with the JPG you get 1/10th of the size (or less). Yes, but I was talking of lossless compression, where tighter compression requires more passes through the file. Photoshop doesn't give a choice when saving TIFF files except for Layer Compression, where ZIP takes about twice the time. But it's true, that's only a few seconds difference on my 2x500 G4 (for a 2MB file). But it was 68030, 68040 and tens of MHz time! ;-) Nowadays, even a cell phone has more CPU power than a Mac Quadra... :-D Yeah, I remember printing to graphic film with a IIci upgraded to 12MB RAM, or was it 20, and a 100MB harddisk. And that's only 15 years ago... -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Need to Print Thousands of Micro$oft doc scans, Ahhh
Sorry for creating havoc :-) To sum up how I understand it now: 1. The Mac decompresses the files before sending them to the printer anyway -- so converting them wouldn’t help. 2. File transfer goes at LAN speed. 3. The printer takes a long time RIPing uncompressed tiff files. So either the printer’s CPU is the bottleneck, or the printer’s RAM is really too small for these files and it spends a long time juggling around the data. Re. compression: There can be a big difference in file size, depending on the time you spend analyzing the file. Remember DiskDoubler asking you if you want Fast, Standard, Small, or Smallest/Slow? So it doesn’t directly depend on the scanning, but it does depend on the software used to write the files. If done on a fast computer, one can afford to compress them more than on a slower system. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Need to Print Thousands of Micro$oft doc scans, Ahhh
Or: Glen could batch-process the images, i.e. open them and save them uncompressed, and then print those. That would take the load off the printer’s processor and put it on the Mac’s CPU. It would be interesting to try, but I’m not sure if it would make a difference to the bottom line. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: USB 2 versus g3 powermac bus
anyone know how fast the onboard bus on a g3 350 is compared to usb2? In other words comparing read and write speeds. Thanks Maybe you want to compare the speed of internal and external harddisks? The internal hd-bus is ATA/33, which has a max of 33.3 MB/s. So it’s a good deal faster than USB1, but way slower than USB2. Re: CPU upgrade options for Power Mac G4 DA
Leopard is a bit slower than Tiger, so you have to decide if it’s worth it. Otherwise, running Leopard on this DA is not a problem. The only problem is with installing it, unless you can use another faster Mac for that: connect the DA in target disk mode and install onto its harddisk from the faster Mac. Then make a disk image of the DA’s boot partition to another disk (or partition) so you won’t need to use the other Mac again, in case your boot partition goes bad. Upgrading the processor, in my opinion, is only worth the trouble if you at least double the speed. And often you can get a complete machine, MDD or QS, for the same price as a CPU upgrade. That means you’d have two good Macs instead of one, for the same cost! In your case, you could look on ebay for a QS 2002 with a broken CPU. Re: Overclock a G4 iMac?
YouTube is heavy on the computer, unfortunately it's as simple as that. You can improve the display by not using full-screen mode, and by using a low-resolution alternative stream as pointed out by the other posters. Or see if you can increase the computer's RAM, and maybe install a clean OS. Re. overclocking: that is not for the faint at heart. It means changing something to the hardware, or deep inside the operating system, to make the processor run faster than its tested maximum speed. In practice, that will give you 1. something like a 10% speed boost and 2. more system crashes. A more realistic thing would be to replace the processor by a faster one, but as far as I know that can't be done in iMacs. (Please correct me, anyone.) Somehow your post sounds as if he is used to a different computer and/ or a different internet connection where everything goes smooth. Re: Motherboard and Memory Questions on recovered DAFir
@Albert: The Digital Audio has this quirk that it has 3 physical RAM slots but 4 logical ones. @Mark: The DA does need 133MHz. What you can do from here is swapping the modules in slot 2 and 3 and see how they are reported then. If slot 2 is reported empty after the swap, you know the module has got damaged somewhere in the process. If slot 3 is reported empty still, something could be wrong with the slot. That would be bad news. In that case, you would need a good motherboard. But I think I’ve read in other threads that RAM is an unfathomable thing sometimes, so it’s worth trying all 6 permutations of your 3 RAM modules. That is, once you are sure that all 3 are good. Albert’s suggestion is a good way to find that out. The main thing is to be absolutely systematic. It’s good to write down what you are doing so you can trace everything back. It’s also good to (temporarily) mark the modules so you can clearly identify them. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Hi Barney, Maybe you’re gently mocking the listers for always reporting all those problems? It’s true, the list doesn’t reflect our life with Mac in a balanced way, but then, I don’t think it’s supposed to. On the other hand, it could be refreshing from time to time to hear stories of G3-G5s running smooth, doing what we want them to do, thusly empowering our lives. I’ve a Powerbook 1400 with a G3 upgrade and OS 8.6 for simple stuff, with RAM-Mozilla mainly for email (including this list), MS Word 5, FileMaker Pro 3. When its RAM gets full, I have to reboot it, otherwise it’s always ready for a quick check or moment of inspiration. I have it in my living room, which is possible because it has no fan and boots from a CF card. I’ve typed an entire (thin) book on it -- true, part of it with an external ADB keyboard. Then a GigabitEthernet 2x500 which I use for all other things. It’s starting to boot a bit slowly now, because I can’t help installing more and more stuff. Otherwise it’s just there, doing all I want it to -- sometimes after some coaxing. Third: a GigE 450MHz (from a Cube) set up as a public computer running Tiger, with user accounts and browsers in three languages to accommodate different users. Speed depends on which programs you use and is subjective anyway, so it’s hard to say if you’d be satisfied with Leopard’s speed. This may not be legal, but I would: borrow Tiger (10.4.11) and install that, because it’s quick and simple. Then see if you like the speed with your favourite programs. Subtract about 30%-40% from that speed and you’d have a rough gauge of the speed under Leopard. In fact, Leopard is not that much slower, but I’m trying to guess the difference between a used-for-some-time Leopard and a fresh Tiger. As I have little experience with Leopard, I welcome corrections to this estimation! -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. How to Auto-shutdown during sleep?
I have set up a Mac for public use. It starts up and shuts down automatically at the beginning and end of the day -- but the shutting down works only if the Mac is being used at the scheduled time. I like to have it sleep and log off after some time though, because there’s not that many people using it. How to make it shut down according to schedule even if it’s sleeping or logged off? It’s a GigE with 10.4.11 and limited-user accounts in English, German and Italian to accommodate different users; that’s why I let it log off. Any ideas? unconnected drives show up in DiskUtility
Sorry for this question about a non-PPC-Mac, but my friend’s MacBook Pro running 10.6 couldn’t read his external harddisk and he asked me to help. I looked in DiskUtility which showed the drive but couldn’t mount it. I guess the drive is failing -- I have to test more. But the weird thing is that two other drives were shown, also unmounted, which were not connected at all. And he doesn’t have such drives even, he says. My theory: maybe he unplugged those drives without properly unmounting them, on one of his travels to exchange expertise and data? And how do I get rid of them? Is there a cache or something to clean? It seems his computer has slowed down because of this ghost drives. VLC VideoLan black screen
Experiment report: On a GigE I am setting up, VLC played videos with normal sound, but with a black picture. The window adjusted to the video’s aspect ratio, but remained black. After some experimenting, I think I have localized the cause: VLC does this with certain graphic cards. I don’t know the reason for this behaviour, and I couldn’t find any clues on the web, so here are the details of what I did: The GigE has a 450MHz processor from a Cube and 1.1 GB RAM. VLC is version 0.9.10 and the OS is 10.4.11. With an ATY Rage 128 Pro card (AGP) inside and an Apple 15 display connected to its ADC port, VLC played a .m4v video with a black window. QuickTime played the same video normally on the same screen. I tried other display settings with no success: the same result for resolution 640x480 and/or 256 colors -- except that with 256 colors, the window is not black but blue. With a different (better) AGP card inside, like a Radeon, VLC played the same video normally. Then I put an ATI R7000 64M DDR PCI card into the same GigE and connected another monitor to its VGA port. VLC plays normally on that one. Then I put the ATY Rage 128 Pro card back in, while keeping the PCI card. The monitors were set up as side-by-side displays. When, during playback, I moved VLC’s video window to the other monitor, it changed from black to playing or vice versa. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: G4 dual boot flat screen iMac won't boot into OS 9
Jane, do you have a backup image of your system? What you write sounds like it's damaged: 1. the OS 9 drivers are there and I have started up in 9 before. But it will NOT start up in 9 now. I even had to run Disk Warrior to get it back to boot in 10.4. Everything else is working just fine. 2. I am using a LaCie USB external floppy drive that I have used on this computer before. I would try that floppy drive on another Mac to see if it works there -- but I guess you can't or you have tried that already. Re: New G4 user - many questions
Hi Greg, I also think 10.4.11 is the best OS to use on this Mac, as long as you don’t need stuff included in Leopard of course. It’s certainly the fastest. RAM: it seems to have 512+128. I really recommend buying at least one more 512. But be careful: many modules offered are so-called high- density, meaning they don’t work in the G4s. In general, using PC hardware in Macs can be tricky, as you have noticed. Re. audio: It’s true, the Digital Audio doesn’t have any mike input! You’ll need a USB mike or some kind of hardware adapter. I have no experience with audio, but a search for powermac midi brought up a 2006 forum post where an interesting-looking card was offered (for 43$ used, incl. shipping): M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (24bit/96khz) PCI sound card with 1 midi in and 1 midi out, digital in/out, rca analog in/out. Note that the output files get real big for longer strings: For abcdefg it’s about 40k, but for 1234567890 it’s 40MB (3.628.800 permutations). -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: DVD, Webcam, Pix, and Images: why are they soooo different
We’re having quite a number of topics in here now, but anyway: I’ve been asking myself whether it’s better to top post or bottom post? My guess is bottom post while deleting from the previous post the part that is not being answered. I’m sure the rules are posted somewhere, but anyone inclined to teach me? Re. DVDs playing well and video files poorly, I think the point has been clearly made now: DVDs have 4GB or more so the computer has an easy job, where video files in other formats are compressed to a quarter of the size or less and need to be worked on hard by the CPU. It was said a bit bluntly, but yes, my Digital Audio (466 MHz G4) has the same problems. Some YouTube videos don’t play smoothly and I can forget HD ones. Downloading them improves things only slightly. TV/monitor: The absolute minimum width for a monitor these days is 1024 pixels, so never get 720p if you’re going to use it as a monitor. (Even my ancient Powerbook 1400 has more than that. There are many web pages that you cannot view completely on screens narrower than 1024 pixels: the left edge is gone and you can’t scroll over.) I’m not familiar with bluray, but isn’t HD its main purpose? If so, your bluray quality would be reduced to LD by playing it on a 720p TV, I expect. If you’re using it mainly as a monitor, maybe it would be better to find a monitor with a TV input port, or see if you can get a bluray drive to build into your Mac? Anyone knows if those exist? Plasma/LCD: aren’t plasma screens usually LARGE, so less suited as a monitor, cause you’re sitting relatively close up? They also use more power and don’t last as long, from what I’ve heard. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: iMac G4 800, OS X Panther vs Tiger
Tiger is smoother, as you told me thank you You already found out, but anyway: Apple has been replacing emulation code by native code up to Tiger, and that’s the fastest OS X of all. In later versions, additions have started to make things slower again. Also, a lot of software requires a minimum of 10.4.11 now, so yes, Tiger is the best, that is if you can live without Time Machine and other newer goodies. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
