In the not too distant future, that is all you'll see from this tired old 
photo=weenie.

First found in late 2014, cancer of the left kidney. By last week, cancer is is 
now chewing up my right kidney, my lower spine, pelvis, bladder, my brain and 
my right femur.. Rapid, greedy and uncomfortable to sit around in it's pain, 
it's going to be a short year, or at best a short 2016.

Am planning on selling or donating  most of my loot.  Not organized as yet, but 
I will find someone to list everything photo,  Plans to deal with my imagery as 
well as my family's geneology may have to evaporate along with my brain.

Over 1500 PDML msgs to read. May not get too much done as the brain is damaged. 
MRI in two weeks will tell that story.

It's been fun allowing my thoughts mingle with such depth of experience and 
humor.

I may or may not respond read or answer or reply, but will try.

I don't recall the exact year, but I was around for Shel, and "The Who". 
Probably read something on UseNet in one of the photo gathering spots. My 
memory banks are not as nimble as they once were, especially for people's 
names, for which I apologize.

The years have been interesting on PDML. I learned a lot by asking questions. 
Even more by viewing the interesting panorama of presented photographs. I have 
often wished I was with each of you in your travels, seeing, and capturing my 
own flavor of the same menu.

The most miserable finish to a SuperBowl game I've ever watched. The Hawks 
couldn't have screw up their chance to win any more embarrassingly if they 
worked hard at blowing it.

I grew up in the Boston area between 1952 and 1960. These "gas houses" as I 
called them, were scattered throughout Newton, Cambridge, Boston and the South 
End (Southie).

They seemed oily and dirty. I never took the time to ask how they worked.

I wouldn't mind seeing a breakdown of numbers sold by model and country. I 
think it would give Pentax and/or Ricoh users/buyers an idea where they stand 
in the great cesspool that is modern camera marketing and sales.

How many total Pentax branded K-3 have been sold. Break that down by country. 
Tells us how big a group we belong to, and whether it's enough to carry some 
weight in communications with Ricoh.

Complicated scene. Very nice rendering. Took me a few minutes to recognize the 
female with the stick up her butt in the background. The eye revealed to me the 
difference between the waterfowl and a burl on a fallen tree.   :-)

Mark, I have been using the Mac Mini encased drives, all from various sources. 
I have eight of them, ranging in size from 500GB to 2TB, running 24 hours a 
day, the smaller sizes for 7 years, larger up to 4 years. Half of them for 
backup of the similar sized drives. In all that time, only one has failed, a 
640GB, after 5 years as a backup drive. OWC currently has some of the larger 
models on sale.

Care must be taken in ordering, as of late, some are sized to match the new, 
smaller size of Apple Mac Minis post 2010, plus Airports and Time Capsule using 
2.5" drives, whereas mine all have 3.5" drives matching the earlier Mac Minis, 
Airports and Time Capsules.

They are stackable, to any height, according to tech supports of the various 
retailers. I used to have two stacks of four, but they all get pretty hot, 
enough for me to worry, even though the one on top gets no hotter than the one 
on the bottom. They have internal fans that vent just below the top on all four 
sides, which you never hear except under large copies or posts from one to 
another. Even then not very loud. But I now have them 2 high, really because I 
have the space now I did not before.

As one who has ADHD reading manuals, at least more than a page at a time, is 
difficult. Most of my knowledge of my K-5 workings were "discovered" using the 
thing, sometimes experamenting, sometime looking it up in the manual (which is 
always at home). 

Try it! It's like getting a new camera every few weeks. Well, new features, 
anyway…

Exceptions would be a few recent birding photos, and several dog action photos

Because you will learn to recognize the pin numbers, if not remembering them 
(it's hard), you might try what I do.

I print a lengthy line of characters on a small sheet. Choose the first letter 
of each bank or card, and a standard random charactor offset, say 2 for the 
first pin, 4 for the second, 3 for the third, it matters not. Even using the 
same offset for each works. 

Lets say your cards and bank cards each start with abc. and all the pins are 
1234. With a straight 3 space offset, your line of characters would read 
A#R1234B371234C6z1234 etc. As you are the one who set it up, the pins would 
stick out when you are viewing the string, but not for others. You know the #R, 
37, 6z are just fillers between the A, B, C. The pins would not read all the 
same as they do here, further defining the line as gibberish.

Whip out the paper, stare at it for a while, put it back, enter your pin #.

In my case, with a good visual memory, I threw all kinds of junk in there with 
different offsets for both the banks initial and the pins, which being 
alpha-numeric added to the gibberishness of the line of type.

Works for me!

Though I started setting up the telescope, and readied the K5 on a tripod, as 
predicted yesterday by the evil weather forecasters, Puget Sound's skies filled 
with medium to thick clouds tonight. The moon, shining brilliantly with it's 
accompanying stars the past three nights, could only present a faint and fuzzy 
version of itself beginning shortly after sunset.

Begrudgingly packed it all away tonight after realizing there would be no 
skyjoy in my land tonight.

If there are leaves or branches between you and the subject, the camera/lens 
doesn't really know what you want. If there is a breeze, and said obstacles are 
moving, AND you do not have spot focusing on, the camera will hunt. Choosing 
action mode will do the same thing. Focusing looks for movement, such as a 
flying bird, vs a perching one.

I spot focus on the subject, moving the spot to something stable at the same 
distance as the subject off center of the frame. This frees up my composition 
wishes instead of centering the subject. Worked wonders with the hummingbirds 
yesterday.

I would think in this age of digital everything that Ricoh would have 
incorporated auto ISO that raised your ISO when the 1.4x is attached so the 
image as seen by the camera and in the LCD would remain fairly constant.

For $600 I would expect to see some sort of built in image intensification 
within the 1.4x instead of just upping the ISO. No?   :)

The image as announced by Pentax had a correction (more PS?) that allowed the 
lens barrel to show above the label. The earlier shots displayed in 'rumors' 
etc showed the label rising in it's center to almost obscure the barrel in the 
center. Threw off the perspective.

Ultimately, time almost always proves me wrong, or mis-informed. It's a burden, 
but not a curse.  :)

It's not only the text, but the piece of material (or PS layer) holding the 
text has a different radius than the converter, matching up with the converter 
in the center, but almost bisecting the vertical lip of the top at it's end 
points.

Definitely not a Pentax product shot, beta or whatever.

Like others have said, I can wait, I can't afford, and I have the Tamron 1.4 
and 2.0x converters for PZ-1p, plus the 2.0 A Pentax unit.

My several B+W 'thin' filters all came with a Schneider plastic cap that fit 
them quite well, knocked then off by accident one or two times, but they never 
fell off on their own accord. In fact, if you use them with the lens shade on 
between sites, it is hard to get a fingernail under the ridge around the cap to 
pull it off. On some of my lenses with that setup, you can get the cap off by 
taking the lens shade off, which lifts the Schneider cap off the slim filter.

I actually do use my bodies and lenses in the Pacific Northwest Drizzleshine, 
but have stayed away from pouring rain, freezing cold, blowing dust & sand, and 
temps over 85° F. Not because of the equipment's limitations, but mine.  :)  
And realizing my own inability to realize just which camera and lens I am 
shooting with.

I do recall the YouTube videos of the K5 and lenses in a shower, still working,

I may be wrong. My three 4 DA* lenses have a rubbery seal at the lens mount 
that is black, and doesn't seem to stick out as far as the red seals do on the 
later lenses labeled WR. Perhaps Pentax was waiting to see how many defective 
lenses were returned before making a big deal about it with transparent drawing 
showing the umpteen sealing rings in their construction.

I probably was fooled by the changes in the nomenclature, and I assumed 
construction, of the DA 18-55, which attained WR status after I already had my 
non-WR version. I was able to later sell that one and obtain a WR with a newer 
body.

Though I criticize others, it does nothing to improve my own mind, or my own 
photography.

Takes a lot of time to develop the skills to place an image you want to 
capture. Moving the lens to settle on something has you fighting with having 
the lens's mirror at a pretty precise 90 degrees from the horizon. If you tip 
the lens down a fraction, it goes astray. 

But it's inexpensive, a frustration to use, fools few when they notice your 
antics trying to seem to be pointing the lens at something in front of you 
while rocking the camera body left and right to find your true subject.

Thanks John and Bob. Not a solution in either case.

Royal Mail (in some sort of fire sale situation, I read) is the umbrella corp 
of ParcelForce. Their prices are pretty much the same as the rest. They only 
seem to differ in the service used to deliver the goods once over here. One 
suggestion made by the seller and by eBay was to find a consolidator who takes 
their time but fills containers to ship under their name. Getting the package 
to a port and getting it delivered might be another sticking point.

ParcelForce, by the way, offers the best prices, up until just below my 
purchase's cubic footage, at which point that service is no longer available.

OT: Need help with a package from UK to USA

I just purchased two new old-stock still boxed Aux. sheet-feeders for my Apple 
Laserwriter 8500 for £50 from an outfit in Luton, north of London. They 
suggested I use "Parcel2Go" for a quote on getting it to my home in Washington 
state. The two units taped together total 9.2 cu feet but only weigh 10 Kg.

The least expensive shipper is quoting me £141, the most £512. But these are 3+ 
days shipments, much faster than I need. I am only interested in getting these 
intact within the next month or two. These sheetfeeters are already almost 20 
years old, and a great find, just an ocean away.

Could one of you make some suggestions on ways to cross the pond in a more 
reasonable manner?

Not unhappy, just needed the money, so I'm getting rid of lenses that have not 
been used in several years. I tend to always mount a DA* lens to fit my shoot. 
Like the DA* 60-250. I seems to get a higher percentage of good shots with 
those, and the 17-70 SDM.

You get more bang for your buck, especially with under the tree stuff, with N 
gauge. Two levels, a siding, houses, factories, etc. Oh, and Santa's Sleigh!  
:)  All on a two foot square elevated piece of 3/4" plywood with a 8" hole 
under and through the mountain.

MPO - I use an LED light source off camera mounted next to a Pentax 540. Seems 
the birds at my feeders prefer a constant light (faster AF too!) with an 
occasional flash than a flash out of the dimness. Best sky colors are at dawn 
and setting sun. Don't ask to see examples. Working on being competent. Hey 
Dave, is that a wooden or cushioned easy chair you sit in awaiting a Jay to 
pose for you?  :) :)

In that vein, movies, whilst watching the F-1 race in India this morning, I 
noticed that each of the team's "row of engineers peering at LCD screens of the 
thousands of sensors on their drivers cars" had a slot between the screens and 
the laptops on the bench through which a DSLR was sliding back and forth on 
dual rails, rotating to get different angles (don't think it changed vertical 
angle) as the race progressed. Very erie, with no one in sight at the controls. 
TV? Team records? Don't know, but it was not a movie or TV cameras. Not even a 
GoPro (God that guy must be so rich by now)

I am thinking of buying a large and long bill'd baseball type hat and wearing 
my flip-up 7.00x close-up watchmaker type plastic lenses that clip on to my 
regular trifocals. I've tried the combo indoors and outdoors with a normal 
baseball cap on an overcast day, and they were great. In the sun the unrimmed 
plastic magnifiers may catch some light which may interfere.

It would depend on the magnification of your flip-ups, but with my 1.25 
drugstore 67mm readers and my 7.00x flip-ups, the LCD of my Pentax Q is in 
focus from ~ 6 inches to ~7.5 inches measuring from my eyebrow, and completely 
fills the immediate field of vision of the glasses. Bonus: You can read the 
letters and symbols on the back of the camera without holding it at arms 
length! And with my trifocal glasses, it's even better.

Flip the added lenses up and they are completely out of the way as would be 
clip-on sunglasses.

Tracking birds or critters in the wild you are still better off with a red dot

You must be referring to the fake leatherette on most gripping surfaces. Just 
touch the camera anywhere else and you can tell by the temperature it is metal.

Better yet, test your camera for zero degree operation sometime. Let it cold 
soak for ten minutes. Then touch your tongue to anyplace that isn;t "plastic".

I'd probably want to have a K-56 camera and a G5 to mount it in. Choppers are 
too shakey. Sure, they make isolation mounts for video work, but not for the 
pilot and passengers!

I've been running OSX 10.6.8 for years, and Aperture 3 works fine. I'm at 3.0.3 
now. It and my 24" 2008 iMac get along fine with any and all DNGs I throw at 
it. But I don't have a K5 II, just a K5. It should make no difference as DNG 
format is universal. Pentax/Ricoh cannot just "change" it for "their" cameras.

In answer to your question at the end of this message. 

Note that the text refers to "Quadra's and PowerPC's microphones that come with 
the computer". They are talking early to mid-90s here, and refer to the little 
mini-hockey puck mics Apple used to ship with their computers. Soft foam 
backing, about 1.5" diameter, beige. 

Then Apple realized money could be made selling mics to people, and letting 
aftermarket whiners into the fray, so they stopped the practice. I can assume 
without looking up the tech that the only equipment that still uses such a 
system is iPhones and iPads, but their extended pin on their mic/earphone combo 
is only to allow both audio sections to share one ground and are mono.

Possibly making some assumptions there, and I'll be corrected if so, but for 
best sound, either use a mic with internal pre-amplification, or run mikes into 
a small mixer that provides such amplification and has a control to limit or 
boost it.

I've never had a problem plugging a Sony Lav mike into my MacBook, MiniDisc 
Recorders, and my K5. I've plugged several mics into my K-5, and/or line outs 
from a Sony and/or Tascam mixer.

Most of my concert/Live recordings (back in the day) I used PZM plate mics 
attached to a 1 x 2' piece of lumber hoisted above the crowd. They were 
designed for 2 AA batteries, but I modified the battery holder to take a 9V 
battery. It withstood the SPLs of "really loud" outdoor and indoor 
amplification with cleaner sound.

the stolen item to. 

Thieves would scratch out the SS#, as would anyone to whom you sold a piece of 
your gear. Much collectible photo gear, bicycles, tools, transistor radios etc. 
were rendered valueless.

The cops never reimbursed us for the loss in value, either.

A 22 min video that explains the way the pumpers work. Only difference is we 
measured the distance from the nozzle to the furthest drop of water on a 
unrolled 6' x 200' roll of kraft paper (usually between 175 and 310 feet).

On my screen, the contrast is too high, exemplified by the rock wall in full 
sunlight on the right (makes my eyes water) and the rock wall in full shade 
with the white (paper) highlights. You need to wipe them both with the "lower 
contrast brush" which must be available somewhere in your pixel toolbox(s).

USPS has been advertising on TV all month that they automatically track and 
insure ($50) all Priority Mail service now. As a matter of fact, they track the 
following for free -  Priority Mail, Standard Post, and First-Class Mail 
parcels (electronic option). They only charge $.20 if postage is purchased 
online, $.90 at the post office. Most businesses use Standard Post (see how 
your first package was sent) for the low-cost option.

15 months ago I tapped the lens hood of my 60-250 on my car door as I  
was returning from some shooting. The hood came off, rolled away a  
bit. I retrieved it. Upon arrival back home inspection revealed  
several parts of the hood's locking keyways were broken or bent. Spent  
an evening repairing those only to discover the pot-metal lands for  
the mechanism were broken or bent. A whole morning was spent finding  
the missing land in the driveway and epoxying it perfectly in place.


The hood lasted about 3 days. No more places to put superglue to make  
it work again.


So I ordered two from B&H @ 44.95 each. Plus shipping. Still the same  
price. 2 to 4 weeks to ship - out of stock.


Have not damaged one since. Well, except the 12-24 hood 3 years ago.  
Same obnoxious price.

Put together all snaps that contain that or those people and you may discover 
from the photos context who they are or where they belong in the genealogy.

Fortunately for me, the cousin who was the major source of family photos and 
documents, Claudia Jane, had already identified many of the subjects on the 
back, in pencil lightly, if they had not already been done by her grandmother, 
Lou Edna. When her grandmother, my aunt, was fading over time my cousin asked, 
and was told she could have it all. It now takes up a whole bedroom in her 
house. I'm afraid quite a bit was left out of any order she had then in when we 
started. I could have copied several hundred more of people I did not know, my 
aunt's girlfriends from school in the 20s and 30s, and their families including 
visits to various SW geologic shrines.

Some of the images I have are from the incredibly small (1"x 1.5") prints, some 
folded into sleeves or booklets. Hard to copy well. Others are just amazing 
images well over 100 years old, sharp, posed well. Keeping the eyes still for 
30 secs to 30 minutes posed a real problem back then.

It would behoove you to make digital copies of all of your parents prints, and 
steal the negatives as well. 

They may be snapshots, but they are a record of time as it pertains to your 
family and friends. Offer to do the same with your other relative's photos and 
important documents. If your relatives are anything like mine, they will ignore 
you.

It cost me 60 days and $4000 to collect about 50% of my relatives images last 
year. The plus side was I got to visit with many old folks like me that I 
hadn't seen in 25-40  years, and meet with about 60 kids who I'd never seen 
before.

That trip led to my finding and talking to a handful of 40-50 year old 
relatives I never knew existed.

So get with it now. Later on, you will find that there is no one left to answer 
questions about your family's history.

One of the much used props in the studio a partner and I shared with some 
architects in the 60s. Dry ice in a bowl in the tub worked, as did having just 
their eyes and hair peering over the side.

84 Vanderwater. Still there, but empty and dark, trash scattered street. 

Of course, it was a different time, but when we had time to spare we just 
called the major agencies and asked for a model or two from their head-shot 
book. I usually spoke of the phone with the girls to give them an idea of my 
interests, which gave them ideas on what clothes to bring and what lighting to 
make up for. 

I helped with makeup if needed, and preferred to keep it simple. Now-a-days you 
have to be an artist to pencil and color in "smokey eyes" as well as deal with 
whether to accentuate or hide the multicolor inks decorating so much skin.

My favorite shoots were day long trips into the abandoned towns and buildings 
in the SF / Sacramento area. Never had a model be skittish about going off with 
me. In fact, changing in the open next to my VW Bus seemed to be their choice. 
Even with inexperienced models both there and in Seattle 20 years ago none 
seemed embarrassed to be nude or almost nude when changing without knowing me 
well if at all. 

My professional attitude and non-threatening manor seemed to allay fears by the 
models. If they were nervous or timid the planned shoots were designed to calm 
them. Always seemed to work out.

Thanks for reminding me Ken. 

Yes, Boeing wanted to get out from under the Engineers and Machinists Unions, 
who kept winning against Boeing in the negotiations over most anything. 

S. Carolina (or wherever) offered Boeing a union-free facility and of course 
many tax breaks. The Everett gangs won after a walkout that delayed the 787, 
along with dozens of other snags that apparently are still occurring. Building 
the future of aircraft design is tough.

I'd bet that the parts for a lens come from many different sources that 
specialize in the part they are producing for such a lens, or even a camera 
body. 

Ricoh - Pentax may design a lens, but with some in-house exceptions, the parts, 
barrel, motors, circuit boards, flat cables, switches, and parts that require 
being machined, all are ordered out-sourced.

Look at the Boeing 787, Almost all of it is manufactured around the world (at 
least it was originally, until they found out how shoddy some of the parts 
were). But everything comes together here in Everett and their back east (N. 
Carolina??) factory. Same with the automobile manufacturing process. It was big 
news when Apple announced they would be making the new Mac Pro in the US. Of 
course, I think they mean assembling a percentage of it. The same with the 
glasses you are wearing to read this. Think the frame designers have the 
machines to make the little tiny screws that hold them together? And you know 
the optics come from elsewhere, ground from blanks that come from somewhere 
else. 

Few companies qualify to be shown on "How it's Made" without showing you that 
some part of the product is delivered, except maybe the Swiss Army Knife and 
the LeatherMan.

I'm thinking of getting another phone line/number that is auto forwarded to the 
caller ID of any incoming calls. 

Placing your number on the the "Do Not Call" list the FCC runs does absolutely 
no good. 
If you google one of the numbers that call, you will see websites that listed 
the number in 2009 as being in violation of the DNC law.

I think one of the problems my email (Apple's Mail) that shows itself as 
subject line changes within an already established subject threat is caused by 
folks inspired by something they read in thread 'A', hit reply, then change the

Price is not the deciding factor in my continuing to buy Pentax. It is my 
history with the brand, my lens cabinet(s), my familiarity (for the most part) 
with the operation and handling of the various bodies and lenses. 

If I want (need?) a piece of gear and I can afford it at the time, I get it. If 
I can't, I don't.

I'm retired. Shoot every day in one form or another. Worry about what my 
photo-dumb sisters will do with all this gear when I die. Ada would just throw 
it out. Lucy would have it appraised, and be disappointed in the total price.

Hung a Hummingbird Feeder off the deck last weekend, so spending a lot of time 
finding out how to capture the tiny beasties with pixels. They are pretty smart 
little creatures. If I'm inside, they come up to the window and shoot looks 
from several angles to see if I'm "hunting" them, and perhaps to ascertain 
where the dogs are. Ot they could be preening in their reflection. chp, chp.

Wonderful. They are beasts, Don. As a child of few years I've been scared and 
surprised when a blast of steam enveloped me in the station (NY or Chicago). 
I'm old enough to remember the stations being filled with steam, and the wonder 
of the new Diesel-Electrics and how quiet they were in comparison.

Now, D-Es are the norm, making us old guys pine for the old days. Except for 
dirigibles.

Which is why the camera has "auto-horizon" in the first place.

I would hazard a guess that the "thumping" is the magnet cage is trying to 
align the sensor, but cannot because one side is either inoperable or 
physically stuck in place.

My bad. In our case (large government facility already running 3 - or 6 - IBM 
360 mainframes) the hardware were all IBM PCs, green-screen monitors, 
keyboards, no mice or trackball. One piece of software was out of place - Lotus 
123 - yellow and blue (green?) box.

They were really sweating that all the secretaries would take forever to learn 
to use them. Production would suffer, tempers would flare. Classes were held, 
etc.. They survived.

My department already had color monitors with light-pens, hooked to the  
mainframes, mostly used for production timing and scheduling.
