Hmm! you have a good point there Tony. I never thought of that. Perhaps that is
the reason I bought the rotary hinged type in the first place. ☺️ I tie
parachutes once in a while, but can't remember what hackle pliers I use. My go
to hackle pliers are the electrical style as long as they have a ring to hold
or put your finger in. They grip the hackle well. Next time I tie some
parachute hackled flies I will remember to use the rotary pliers.

I display my flies at my tying station with the Electric clips mounted on a

they are great for holding flies.I was told today by my therapist who is a
shooter that he gets his ear plugs from Harbor Freight. He buys them by a box
of 1000.. He says they are the same as the poppers I posted on Facebook. That
is what I used for the Popper Swap.Tony

Don: Well, as you’ll see in my post just now, I did order the rotary hackle
pliers, but If they don’t work for me, the good news is that I’m only out about
$8. I have only used the type you talk about with the rubber pads, and have
great success with them, but just wanted to try something new. I have a cheap
all metal pair that I got with my starter kit 10 yrs ago, but hate those as #1
the grip part is too small, and #2, they break the hackle stems as you say here.

Can’t wait to see the You Tube videos. You might go viral and then You Tube
will start sending you a check each month. I have a friend who makes good
money, while teaching others his techniques at the same time. It’s a win/win
for him. I want to see the trick shots as somebody just opened a new pool hall
here that is DRY, which means you can go there and not have to worry about the
drunks etc, and I love to play pool, just don’t like playing with drunks LOL...
Only trick shot I have is knocking the eight ball in FIRST LOL... Or
“scratching” with the cue ball. I can do that shot REAL I hardly EVER miss it
in fact. Chuck

Subject: Re: [VFB] Rotary Hackle Pliers??

Chuck,
Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary hackle
pliers. I have a set and never use them. I also have an old squeeze-spring type
with rubber pads, and I’ll use them before the rotary. The rubber pads on the
old pliers are the key as they don’t allow the pliers to put a break-bend in
the hackle stem, just a ‘soft’ bend at most. The rotary is hard metal and if
you put any angle on the hackle while pulling you break the hackle with the
crack in the stem that it creates. The old hackle pliers is a spring loop and
you can put your finger in the bend and sort of ‘rotary’ the hackle.

Secondly, the ‘old’ hackle pliers came in handy with the old short hackles,
which is all we had for decades- sometimes took two hackles to tie a fly. With
the advent of Hoffman’s, and then Whiting genetics, the hackles are so long
that it’s easy to hang on to the hackle tip with your fingers while winding.

I’ve just struck up a deal with a local friend here in Nampa to be my
videographer and editor. I have been so busy with work I haven’t had time to
even keep up with Fantasy Fly orders. But he’s going to assist me in YouTube
tutorial videos, DVDs, and other videos I want to do.

After we do a rope-dub intro video, we’ll do some fundamental tying tutorials,
and I have a list of a dozen fundamentals that I will post videos on, one of
them being innovative ways of using Whiting hackles.

I’m also going to do a video of my old pool trick shots from 30 years ago.
Should be fun.

Yeah Allan. Quit picking ion Chuck LOL... J/K. Tony brings up something
that will make the rotary pliers WELL worth the money to me. I hadn’t even
thought about parachute hackles. That’s one of the hardest things for me to do.
In fact, I just don’t tie them as I ALWAYS make a mess out of them. But now
that he brought that to my attention, I’ll try them again as I love how they
make the fly sit flat and upright on the water for me when they are tied
correctly. Normally, around here, after hatches really start up, you can cast a
parachute tied dry fly late in the evening onto the water, just let it sit
there and if there is a fish within 10ft or so, before the ripples stop they
will pop the fly 9 times out of ten . Chuck

I think they are, Alan. The knurled handle rotates, there is a rotating joint
from the metal to the rubber section, and the rubber section is a hinge. I’ve
had mine for 15 yrs (I tie a *lot*) and this year the pads for the index finger
and thumb are showing signs of wear. Otherwise – great. One other thing: they
have a nice heft to them. You could hackle a fly halfway, do some honey-dos ant
three days later J continue the hackle where you left off.

Tnx. That one looks very user friendly.

I have one of their bobbins and I use it almost exclusively.

It was very expensive but I believe it is well worth it because I use it so
much and feels good while you are using it.

I’ll bet the hackle pliers are that good also?

Yeah Allan. Quit picking ion Chuck LOL... J/K. Tony brings up something that
will make the rotary pliers WELL worth the money to me. I hadn’t even thought
about parachute hackles. That’s one of the hardest things for me to do. In
fact, I just don’t tie them as I ALWAYS make a mess out of them. But now that
he brought that to my attention, I’ll try them again as I love how they make
the fly sit flat and upright on the water for me when they are tied correctly.
Normally, around here, after hatches really start up, you can cast a parachute
tied dry fly late in the evening onto the water, just let it sit there and if
there is a fish within 10ft or so, before the ripples stop they will pop the
fly 9 times out of ten . Chuck

Subject: [VFB] Hook trade wanted.

Folks: I am in need of a few Mustad (or other brand) Classic 37160 (shown here
http://www.jsflyfishing.com/mustad-classic-37160-fly-hook ) hooks in a size
6-10, with a preference of sized 6 and 8. I have some bass hooks, kinked back
popper hooks, saltwater hooks (stainless steel) etc that I will trade hook for
hook if somebody will trade with Me. I want to tie some copper wire and peacock
herl “San Juan Worm” patterns I saw tied on these hooks as I have never had
much luck with the traditional San Juan Worm flies.

The other day, when digging up some old dead plants from my raised beds in the
garden, found a lot of wigglers and red worms, so I thought about using those
on a bare hook and casting them as an :” Alabama Juan Worm” fly LOL... Contact
me OFF LIST to see if we can work a trade. I’d like to have about 25-100 in
different sizes if possible, mix or match if possible and will trade other types
of materials. The hooks as you can see, are $9.50 per hundred, which is mot
much by itself, but since I want nix or match, it could run up quite a bill for
ones I may or may not ever use, which is why I’d rater trade for them if
possible.

Or, I’d buy 50-100 (or however many you have so I can at least try out the
pattern I’m wanting to try) mix or match from you outright, and will pay more
if you have a brand that is more expensive than the Mustad shown in the link I
have attached. I have all sorts of materials, but especially chenille and
rubber (silli) legs in particular to trade for them if you don’t need/want more
hooks. Thanks, Chuck

That Dick's Dandy sounds like one of the flies that were submitted for the

Chuck,  This is one from the early years of the VFB.   I can't remember Dick's
last name.  I want to say Stock, or Stockton.  Maybe somebody here remembers.
Anyway, it is an easy fly to tie and does work well.  Dick's Dandy:
#8 3XL streamer hookTail  Red hackle tail 3/8 long.body    9
strands of peacock herl spun into a chenille.beard   red hackle tied down.
wing    White over black bucktail (Sparse)  Do not let the wing extend past
the bend of the hook more than 1/8or the fly will foul.  This fly MUST be
fished with a sinking tip line.  Adding split shot ruins the action of the fly.
Use short and long strips with long pauses.  The fish will most offen take on
the pause.  The fly will suspend if tied correctly.  It's a simple fly to tie
but very effective. On Wed, Mar 11, 2015 at 8:36 PM, Chuck Alexander

Tony, I was just watching your DVD’s again to get some ideas and have a

pearlescent  white chenille body, the flashabou in the tail, then the red
threaded collar, (which would look like tiny gills on the minnow I think) it
would look just like a Missouri shiner minnow swimming through the water and
most ppl around here fish with either those minnows, or a white on white jig to
catch the most crappie with and we are planning to do some crappie fishing at
night IF it will ever stop raining here LOL.. Thanks, Chuck   Also, does
anybody else here have a “Crappie killer” pattern they tie??? If so, can you
share it with me/us?? Thanks... --

Re: [VFB] Rotary Hackle Pliers??

2015-03-13 Thread 'Anthony Spezio' via VFB Mail
Don,I agree with you on the old type hackle pliers but I really don't use them
anymore since I use the hinge type. I added a bit of shrink tubing on the jaws
and that works fine and prevents slipping. One of the things I liked about the
old type is you could put your finger in the loop and just twirl it around with
the hackle. I liked it for collar hacklesWhen I started tying a number of
Parachute flies that is when I went to the hinge pliers and I just never went
back to the old ones.We just use what works best for us.Tony

On Friday, March 13, 2015 9:18 AM, Don Ordes f...@tribcsp.com wrote:

Chuck,Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary
hackle pliers. I have a set and never use them. I also have an old
squeeze-spring type with rubber pads, and I’ll use them before the rotary. The
rubber pads on the old pliers are the key as they don’t allow the pliers to put
a break-bend in the hackle stem, just a ‘soft’ bend at most. The rotary is hard
metal and if you put any angle on the hackle while pulling you break the hackle
with the crack in the stem that it creates. The old hackle pliers is a spring
loop and you can put your finger in the bend and sort of ‘rotary’ the hackle.
After we do a rope-dub
intro video, we’ll do some fundamental tying tutorials, and I have a list of a
dozen fundamentals that I will post videos on, one of them being innovative
ways of using Whiting hackles. I’m also going to do a video of my old pool
trick shots from 30 years ago. Should be fun. DonO From: Chuck Alexander Sent:

Allan give Chuck a break. LOLA rotary vise is useless for winding parachute
hackles. The swivel hackle pliers is the way to go on them. That is all I have

Re: [VFB] Rotary Hackle Pliers??

2015-03-13 Thread aflytyer
Guess I must be the odd ball.  I use the old style pliers as weights to keep
stuff from unwinding, for the winding of hackle I use one of several rotary
style hackle pliers.  My rotary  vise I use just to check the off side of a fly
or work on the underside of a fly.  What ever floats your boatjust make
sure the drain plug is in place.

Don,
I agree with you on the old type hackle pliers but I really don't use them
anymore since I use the hinge type. I added a bit of shrink tubing on the jaws
and that works fine and prevents slipping.
One of the things I liked about the old type is you could put your finger in
the loop and just twirl it around with the hackle. I liked it for collar
hackles
When I started tying a number of Parachute flies that is when I went to the
hinge pliers and I just never went back to the old ones.
We just use what works best for us.

Chuck,
Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary hackle
