Re: [AI] Query regarding JAWS
Hi In Jaws 13 or later, the Jaws verbosity diolog is called quick settings dialog. Here's how you can toggle the language change detection on or off: Open quick setting dialog (Jaws key + V), type language in the search edit box, press downarrow to access the search results and then move down to the checkbox that says Language detect change. This checkbox is checked by default which means Jaws will detect the language change, uncheck if you do not want Jaws to detect it. More over, I'm unable to read those particular lines in English, unless I select the specific text and read. However, when the text is unselected, JAWS begins to read it in French again. Since I have to use those books for my studies, it is essential for me to get a remedy for this. In the recent past, I have been having more of such language convertion problems. May I know what can be done? I thank you in anticipation! Re: [AI] regarding converting screen shot or foto shot to readable text
Hi Shreyas, You can read PowerPoint documents using jaws, window eyes or Hal. If there are images in PowerPoint, things become a tad more complex since you will have to OCR them. Your best bet is to extract the image from the presentation and run it through an OCR application. However, if your teacher has given you the presentation as a PowerPoint show, then this may not be possible. In this case, either get an editable version of the presentation or use the Jaws OCR feature. Note: NVDA also has an OCR plugin but NVDA, as of this writing does not work with PowerPoint. Re: [AI] Blindness no barrier in English language classroom,By Max de Lotbinière
Hi Avinash, Thanks for the wonderful article. This is a perfect example of what inclusive education is all about. In order to imitate such a model in India, everyone has to take the responsibility, and not just teachers. Student, parents, teachers, schools, government, etc. There are factors like strength of the class, work burden on the teachers, expectation from students (sighted) by parents and teachers, etc. But its a good idea to start interacting with the visually challenged student before the academic year begins to understand his strengths, challenges, needs, etc. On 11/21/12, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Very emulating techniques adapted by these teachers. Why can't teachers think of such innovative techniques in India? Lets share with our teachers so that they can mend their way of teaching methods by equally paying attention to blind students in the class as well. This special article was published in September, but most of us including me, had missed it. Blindness no barrier in English language classroom when needs are shared Max de Lotbinière Activist Chen Guangcheng practices vocabulary with his wife in class at New York University law school. Photograph: William Wan/Washington Post Chen Guangcheng, the 40-year-old Chinese civil rights campaigner, is no ordinary student of English. Earlier this year, following protracted negotiations between Washington and Beijing, he was allowed to leave China with his family to study abroad. He had suffered years of harassment from the authorities and his departure put a severe strain on diplomatic relations. But his back story, which he has been keen to play down since enrolling at New York University's law school and settling in Manhattan, is not what makes him an unusual learner. Rather it is his blindness and the challenges visual impairment present in the English language classroom. Chen and his wife have been attending English lessons at the law school five times a week. They are both first-time learners and among the audio resources he and his teachers have been using are the speeches of Dr Martin Luther King and readings of the Declaration of Independence. Vocabulary such as equal, truth, liberty and self evident present a challenge at beginner level but, the Washington Post reported, the concepts contained within the 236-year-old document are ones Chen believes he needs for his future work. English, Chen told the newspaper, is the key to making himself understood, to maintaining relevance as a Chinese activist abroad and to learning lessons from the US legal system that could be applied to China. China is on a march towards rule of law and democracy, and when that time comes, concepts like this will play a vital role, he said. Philip Herter, who has been working for over 20 years in English language teaching, is one of Chen's teachers at the university. This is not the first time he has taught visually impaired students, but he says, like most teachers, his experience remains limited. The first step, he says, is to gain a through understanding of the student's blindness before teaching starts. The degree of a particular student's impairment is a basic starting point. If there is any way to incorporate texts or other visual materials, then they need to be considered, and if possible prepared in advance, Herter said. It is equally important to talk to the student and try to find out as much as possible about his or her learning style. Does the student prefer to work with Braille, or does he prefer audio? Is the student accustomed to working with sighted classmates or would group interaction in a classroom setting be a new experience? The student's own preferences and strengths have to be considered. Herter says that the range of materials designed specifically for visually impaired English learners is limited. Hence the choice of readings of the Declaration of Independence and other speeches. A lot of my co-teachers' and my work has been to generate our own materials, appropriate to this particular learning context and taking into account our students' backgrounds and their interests. As we go forward we build on what we've used before. The process is very much student-centred and, so far, I think it's been working. But what about visually impaired learners who opt to study alongside sighted students? Jenny Lewin-Jones has taught four visually impaired students over recent years in her modern German language course at Worcester university in the UK. She has found that the students were keen to participate in the lessons alongside up to 15 sighted learners, but also that the changes she made to her teaching and classroom management benefitted the whole class. I found I was doing a lot more repetition, initially for the benefit of the visually impaired student. For example, playing a video clip more times or perhaps asking more questions to

Of late I have had a difficulty in reading my books, which breaks my flow of thought and continuous reading. The problem is, when I read the text in English, the language suddenly gets converted into French (as I understood when I used the spell check feature). Though it gets corrected itself after two or three lines, I don't know what causes this problem. Re: [AI] need english guru
Dear Krishen, Just a small tip for learning good English. Just listen to as much English news as possible. Try to copy the words and record them and then listen to yourself and see where you may be able to improve. Read a lot with complete understanding of each sentence. I din't clearly understand the term shock resistant. the body of the stove is made of insulating material and it won't shock. you can touch the vessel directly unless it is too hot. how much electrycity it may consume? about 1800 to 2000 is the usual capacity. you can vary the power through the regulating buttons. kindly throw some light on the subject matter. what else information you need? Hello, I made some notes a few years back on mail merge. I note down the steps when I do something new. This is most probably for Word 2003. I am pasting below the steps in detail. hope, this helps. With best Regards, Amiyo Biswas Cell: +91-9433464329 Using mail merge feature in MS Word You can use mail merge feature in Word to create a single letter and then address it to several persons. You can also use other data from the source and compose useful form letters for speedy disposal. The source may be a word table, an excel worksheet, an access table and the like. If the source is a word table, it is desirable that the word document should contain the table on top and the heading row should be clearly marked with bold letters or in some similar way. The excel sheet to be used as the data source should contain the data on the first sheet and right from the first row. The first row should obviously be marked as heading row with bold letters or the like. Otherwise you may find it difficult to select the exact rows for data using Jaws. Follow the steps below: 1. First open ms word with the document1 open before you. 2. Now activate Mail merge submenu under Tools menu. 3. Press alt+c to execute the Create command. 4. Use down arrow to select Form letters option and hit enter on it. 5. Press alt+a to execute the Active window command. 6. Press enter or down arrow to activate the Get data menu. 7. Press down arrow to select Create data source option and press enter. This means, you are going to create an address book in ms word. 7A. If you already have a data source file, select Open data source button and press enter. 7B. You will land on a standard open dialogue box. Select the data source file and open it. Remember to select the exact file type in the 'files of type' combo box if you have in your data in an access or excel file. 7C. Now you will land on the Edit main document button. Press enter on it and the Mail merge toolbar will appear. Now Follow the instructions given below for using the Mail merge toolbar. You can skip rest of these instructions in paragraphs 8 to 15 if you already have a data source ready. 8. After you activate the Create data source button, you will find a tricky dialogue box with several controls like Add button, Remove button and so on. Tab over to the list containing Field names in header row. You will find a list of standard address fields all of which you may not require. Use up or down arrow to check the list of fields. 9. You may not require the fields like Title, JobTitle, HomePhone etc for address. So use arrow key to select the field and press alt+r to remove that field from the list. You should leave the fields like FirstName, LastName, Address1, Address2 etc as they are in your data source. 10. You can use Move up or Move down button to move a field one level up or down. Remember that this can be used to take FirstName before LastName. 11. Suppose you want to add a field to record something extra, say amound due. Just tab over to the edit field after the MSQuery button. Normally this edit field contain the highlighted field name. Simply type AmountDue without spaces. Now tab over to the Add button and hit enter, or press alt+a to activate the Add command. 12. Now tab over to the ok button and hit enter key. 13. You will land on a standard Save as dialogue box asking for a file name. Follow the prompts to save the data source file. 14. Since your data source does not contain any data, you will land on the Edit data source button by default. Press enter on it to enter data in the source file. 15. Here you will find the edit fields you specified. Type in the data for each record. When one record is finished, press alt+a to add a new record. When all records are entered, tab over to the ok button and hit enter. Using the mail merge toolbar You have either created a data source or opened one, I hope. Now let us try to write a form letter. 1. Now a blank Word document should be open up with an additional mail merge toolbar. The rest is all the same as in all blank documents. 2. The cursor should be at the top of the document. Type 'To' without the apostrophes and hit enter. 3. Here you are supposed to type in the customer's name. Instead we shall place the FirstName field from the mail merge toolbar. Press alt key and then press ctrl+tab key until jaws says Insert merge fields button menu. It is the first button on the mail merge toolbar. Press down arrow or enter to activate it. The first field should be FirstName field. Hit enter on it and it will be added to the document at the location of the cursor. Verify it with left and right arrow keys. Jaws recognises it as a field. The field name is enclosed in and signs. Jaws announces these signs as double left angle bracket and double right angle bracket. 4. Hit spacebar once and follow the same process to add the LastName field.
