All-vegans-unite Fwd: Did anyone watch Boston Legal Tuesday night?

2007-10-11 Thread Kerri Milam
I thought it was AWESOME when actor Carl Sack went in to a
pretty detailed description of the life and death of chickens in
slaughterhouses. Here is the episode recap. I can't find a site that includes
the specific lines. If anyone knows, please post.

"The Chicken and the Leg"
Denny Crane is so convinced that Carl Sack will be on the losing side of a
cockfighting case that he wagers an extremely large sum with him...

All-vegans-unite Stop the Torture of Horses in Mexican Slaughterhouses!

2007-10-12 Thread Kerri Milam

Horses abandoned by the cruel horse-racing and
horse-carriage
industries or by individuals are being exported from the United
States and killed in horrible ways in Mexican slaughterhouses. A
recent investigation by the San Antonio Express-News documented
that horses were being repeatedly stabbed in the neck until they
were weak enough to be shackled and have their throats slit.

Please click on the link below to ask your U.S. senators and
representative to support the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act, which would permanently end the slaughter of
horses in the U.S. and ban the export of horses for slaughter
 abroad.

Dear Essex County Board Members and Officials:

Please do not employ sharpshooters to kill deer who roam onto roads and
residential properties in South Mountain Reservation. I thank Freeholder
Carol Y. Clark for her opposition to lethal wildlife strategies and urge
other officials to follow suit. Exterminating 150 deer won’t “fix” the
long-term problem of urban encroachment on wildlife habitat.

Deer hunting has shown to boost reproduction rates in deer populations. In a
study to document the effects of "Community Based Deer Management" at the
Watchung Reservation in Union County, NJ, researchers found 57% of killed
pregnant deer had twins in their wombs after two years of hunting. After a
third year of hunting, 60% of killed deer had twins and 8% had triplets.

Similar studies demonstrate that deer who live under non-hunting conditions
typically bear one child. When hunted, the birth rate doubles or triples.
Hunting eliminates part of a population, so survivors rebound due to an
abundance of food and space. With fewer males vying for territory, mating
 becomes the herd's primary focus.

Ultimately, "managed" sport hunting can exacerbate human-deer conflicts by
producing larger herds. A more permanent solution requires community
planning with deer in mind. The blending of nonvio

Dear Governor Kaine, Ms. Baird and Mr. Moriarty:

I am disappointed the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge will renew its
two-day black bear hunt in Virginia, despite last year's widespread
disapproval. I understand the November 30 and December 1, 2007 hunt will
allow twice as many shooters each day and an expanded kill zone.

I ask Governor Kaine to publicly oppose this needless slaughter, intended
solely for recreation. The controversial hunt caters to trophy hunters, a
marginal interest group. Nationally, consumptive wildlife practices such as
hunting and trapping have steadily declined since the 1970s. Conversely, the
more lucrative trend in non-consumptive wildlife watching, hiking, bird
 watching, etc. has risen considerably.

With regard to bear control and human safety, I urge Governor Kaine to
advocate education and prevention instead of slaughter. Public learning
programs, aversive conditioning and bear-proof trash and food containment
have demonstrated far more long-term value than killing wildlife. Bears are
less prone to wander off the Refuge in search of discarded food if they
 don't have access to garbage.

I also ask the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Great Dismal Swamp
National Wildlife Refuge to cancel this black bear hunt. FWS has neglected
to fulfill its legal obligation to assess the environmental impacts of a
hunt -- instead referencing two black bear studies that both advised a
moratorium until more data was evaluated. One author even suggested a bear
hunt could worsen a decline in genetic diversity. These studies indicate
bear numbers are already compromised by genetic uncertainties, along with
 habitat deterioration beyond Refuge borders.

I call upon the Governor and wildlife agencies to resolve human-bear
conflicts through education and enforcement of proper waste disposal.
Conscientious citizens do not support the harassment and slaughter of
wildlife. I look forward to your response to my letter.

 Sincerely,

All-vegans-unite How much is a billion?

 Dear Friends,

I received the email below from a friend. Curious, I did a search on its
validity in Snopes. It's fairly accurate (check out Snopes:

I think it's pretty interesting, especially when you consider that over eight
billion animals are raised, transported, and slaughtered under grossly inhumane
conditions every year ( please see http://www.earthsave.org/lifestyle/ff.htm ).

All-vegans-unite LA Times on Factory Farming & greenhouse emissions

2007-10-17 Thread Kerri Milam

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-ed-methane15oct15,0,1365993.story?coll=la-tot-opinion&track=ntothtml

  Killer cow emissions
LA TIMES OPINION

Livestock are a leading source of greenhouse gases. Why isn't anyone raising
a stink?
  October 15, 2007

It's a silent but deadly source of greenhouse gases that contributes more to
global warming than the entire world transportation sector, yet politicians
almost never discuss it, and environmental lobbyists and other green activist
groups seem unaware of its existence.

That may be because it's tough to take cow flatulence seriously. But livestock
emissions are no joke.

Most of the national debate about global warming centers on carbon dioxide, the
world's most abundant greenhouse gas, and its major sources -- fossil fuels.
Seldom mentioned is that cows and other ruminants, such as sheep and goats, are
walking gas factories that take in fodder and put out methane and nitrous
oxide, two greenhouse gases that are far more efficient at trapping heat than
carbon dioxide. Methane, with 21 times the warming potential of CO2, comes from
both ends of a cow, but mostly the front. Frat boys have nothing on bovines, as
it's estimated that a single cow can belch out anywhere from 25 to 130 gallons
of methane a day.

It isn't just the gas they pass that makes livestock troublesome. A report from
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization identified livestock as
one of the two or three top contributors to the world's most serious
environmental problems, including water pollution and species loss. In terms of
climate change, livestock are a threat not only because of the gases coming
from their stomachs and manure but because of deforestation, as land is cleared
to make way for pastures, and the amount of energy needed to produce the crops
that feed the animals.

All told, livestock are responsible for 18% of greenhouse-gas emissions
worldwide, according to the U.N. -- more than all the planes, trains and
automobiles on the planet. And it's going to get a lot worse. As living
standards rise in the developing world, so does its fondness for meat and
dairy. Annual per-capita meat consumption in developing countries doubled from
31 pounds in 1980 to 62 pounds in 2002, according to the Food and Agriculture
Organization, which expects global meat production to more than double by
2050. That means the environmental damage of ranching would have to be cut in
half just to keep emissions at their current, dangerous level.

It isn't enough to improve mileage standards or crack down on diesel truck
emissions, as politicians at both the state and national levels are working to
do. Eventually, the United States and other countries are going to have to
clean up their agricultural practices, while consumers can do their part by
cutting back on red meat.

Manure, methane and McGovern

In a Web forum for presidential candidates in September, TV talk-show host Bill
Maher asked former Sen. John Edwards a snarky question: Because Edwards had
suggested that people trade in their SUVs to benefit the environment, and
cattle generate more greenhouse gases than SUVs, "You want to take a shot at
meat?" Maher asked.

Edwards wisely dodged the question. It is extremely hazardous for politicians
to take on the U.S. beef industry, a lesson learned by Sen. George McGovern in
the late 1970s when his Select Committee on Nutrition dared to recommend that
Americans cut down on red meat and fatty dairy products for health reasons.
After a ferocious lobbying blitz from meat and dairy interests, the committee
rewrote its guidelines to suggest diners simply choose lean meats that "will
reduce saturated fat intake." McGovern was voted out of office in 1980, in part
because of opposition from cattlemen in his home state of South Dakota.

Beyond the dangers of taking on the beef bloc, legislating food choices is an
unpopular and nearly impossible task, so it's unlikely any candidate will
endorse a national vegetarian movement to fight global warming any time soon.
There are other approaches, though.

Cows and other ruminants have four stomachs, the first of which, called the
rumen, is where the trouble lies; bacteria in the rumen produce methane.
Scientists -- mostly in Australia, New Zealand and Britain, where the problem
is taken a lot more seriously than it is here -- are working on a variety of
technical solutions, including a kind of bovine Alka-Seltzer. Scientists are
also trying to develop new varieties of feed grasses that are more energy
efficient and thus generate less methane, and they are experimenting with
targeted breeding to produce a less-gassy strain of cattle.

But it's not just about the belching. Livestock manure also emits methane
(especially when it's stored in lagoons) and nitrous oxide, better known as
laughing gas. There's nothing funny about this gas: It has 296 times

All-vegans-unite NYTimes: Industry $$$ Behind New Study on Fish Safety

2007-10-17 Thread Kerri Milam
Two weeks ago, a study announcing women of childbearing age could and should
eat fish received a lot of national media attention. I watched
Katie Couric interview a very pregnant reporter who ended her report,
saying, "Well, it looks like I'm fixing fish for dinner tonight," right
after she mentioned the fishing industry funded the study. (National
Fisheries Institute and Burson-Martsller, the public relations firm
that "facilitated the findings," once worked with the US Tuna
Foundation).

Yet, tonight on the CBS Nightly News not one word about today's NY
Times story, discussing the conflict of interest, .

Hopefully, Pacifica Radio will do better.

Industry Money Fans Debate on Fish

The New York Times, Marian Burros, Oct. 17, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/17/dining/17fish.html

MANY health advocates were surprised earlier this month when a
children’s health coalition that includes federal agencies and
professional medical associations contradicted government warnings
about mercury contamination and recommended that women of childbearing
age eat more fish.

Since then several coalition members have renounced the findings, some
criticizing the coalition’s leadership for taking thousands of dollars
from the fishing industry to promote the recommendations. The
coalition’s leaders did not present the recommendations to its members
before releasing them.

The organization, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies
Coalition, announced on Oct. 4 that women of childbearing age should
eat at least 12 ounces of seafood each week, including tuna and
mackerel, which can have high levels of mercury.

Since 2004, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental
Protection Agencyhave recommended that such women eat no more than 12
ounces of fish a week, including no more than 6 ounces of canned
albacore tuna, and avoid swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel and shark
because they are high in mercury, which most scientists say is harmful
to fetuses and young children.

The coalition based its advice on a finding by the Maternal Nutrition
Group, made up of physicians, dietitians and nutritionists. It relied
on recent research, including a study in the British medical journal
Lancet, showing that the benefits for babies of omega-3 fatty acids and
other substances in fish outweighed the risks of mercury. Another study
showed that fears about mercury had kept some women from eating any
fish.

But in an 1,800-word response to its critics, the coalition
acknowledged that a member of the Maternal Nutrition Group, Dr. James
McGregor, a visiting professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the
University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, had gotten
the National Fisheries Institute to provide $1,000 honoraria to each of
the group’s 14 members, with an extra $500 each to the group’s four
executive committee members.

The National Fisheries Institute also gave the coalition $60,000 for
its education campaign. The coalition’s leadership said that the public
relations firm Burson-Marsteller “facilitated this group sharing its
findings” with the coalition and is working to promote the
recommendations.

Burson-Marsteller which represents the fisheries institute, had worked
for the U.S. Tuna Foundation before it joined with the institute.

Hampton Shaddock, a managing director of Burson-Marsteller, is the vice
chairman of the coalition, although he said he recused himself from any
discussion by the organization on seafood recommendations.

Both the recommendations and the connection to the fishing industry
angered some members of the coalition.

“We are appalled,” said Dr. Frank Greer, chairman of the nutrition
committee of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the
coalition. He said his organization does not believe the new advice is
backed up by the preponderance of science.

“Plus it’s paid for by the National Fisheries Institute, which is a
real conflict of interest,” Dr. Greer said.

Others in the coalition, including the federal Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development, the federal Health Resources Services Administration
as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and
the March of Dimes, also disavowed the findings.

“Until we have a solid convincing argument we are not going to change,”
said Michele Kling, a spokeswoman for the March of Dimes.

Julie Zawisza, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration, said
the agency stood by its warnings about seafood high in mercury. “We
think we are pretty much aware of everything that is out there in terms
of scientific studies and data,” Ms. Zawisza said, “and we haven’t seen
any data that we believe would support a change in our current
recommendations.”

Dr. Kathryn Mahaffey, a senior scientist with the E.P.A., said the
coalition’s reco

Has anyone seen the trailer for "Raw For 30
Days"? It's a documentary about six people, who normally eat fast food, who
decide to go 100% raw for a month. It features interviews with doctors,
experts, and raw foodists including Gabriel Cousens, David Wolfe, and Woody
Harrelson.

I am new to raw foods and very interested in hearing from others who are raw
foodists and people who are trying to change their lives for the better. Many
people in my family have diabetes and I have changed my diet and gone raw to
prevent myself from also getting diabetes.

 The trailer on Youtube at:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSuqCMld00w

There is also a new two-disc DVD set that is available for order called RAW
FOR LIFE, which is a encyclopedia of Raw Food, perfect for beginners like me
and Raw Food enthusiasts. I have found it to be very helpful, as I have been
transitioning to raw foods. It's about how to live raw, the Raw Food
philosophy, why to eat a raw food diet, important medical facts and nutritional
information. It's a very practical guide to becoming raw and staying raw.

Spaniards call for bullfights to stop
 October 19, 2007

A group of Spanish politicians, intellectuals, artists and environmentalists
has called for the abolition of bullfights, describing them as an obstacle to
the defence of animal rights.

Spain had a legal vacuum on animal rights despite ill-treatment in the form of
bullfights, hanging hunting dogs that were no longer used, or village
traditions such as hurling goats from church towers, the personalities said in
a manifesto.

The document was signed in parliament during an event, organised by the Green
Party, to campaign for the rights of animals.

There was not a massive support for bullfights in Spain, though many saw them
as a sign of culture and identity, Green MP Francisco Garrido said.

The personalities demanded national legislation to protect the rights of
animals, which are now covered largely by regional legislation.

All-vegans-unite ESSAY: Man, the amazing animal

2007-10-22 Thread Kerri Milam
ESSAY: Man, the amazing animal Isn't man an amazing
animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes,
beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes, and dingoes - by the million in order to
protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by
the billions so he can eat them. This in turn kills man by the million, because
eating all those animals leads to degenerative- fatal-health conditions like
heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills
millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases.
Elsewhere, millions of other humans are being killed by hunger and
malnutrition because the food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic
animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of
man, who kills so easily violently, and once a year sends out cards praying
for, "Peace On Earth."

All-vegans-unite quote made by one of the great scholars, Seneca, 2,000 years ago

2007-10-23 Thread Kerri Milam
In The China Study there is a quote made by one of the great scholars, Seneca,
2,000 years ago. He was a tutor and advisor to Roman Emperor Nero:

An ox is satisfied with the pasture of an acre or two: one wood suffices
for several Elephants. Man alone
supports himself by the pillage of the whole earth and sea. What! Has
Nature indeed given us so
insatiable a stomach, while she has given us so insignificant bodies?
The slaves of the belly (as says
Sallust) are to be counted in the number of the lower animals, not of
men. Nay, not of them, but rather of
the dead You might inscribe on their doors, "These have anticipated
death."

Is is not incredulous that this statement was made 2,000 years ago and we
have completely ignored this and in fact destroyed our planet, our animals?
What a shame, it is sickening what Man does. He is the most destructive and
cruel being on the planet.

A la peanut butter sandwiches
By Trystan L. Bass| Posted Sun, 21 October 2007, 8:45pm

The Amazing Mumford on Sesame Street may have been right: Peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches are magic. They could help save the world.

According to the PB&J Campaign's
website, this classic kid's sandwich lowers your lunch's carbon
footprint by 2.5 pounds of CO2 over a tuna sandwich, grilled cheese, or
hamburger.

How does this work? Well, simply explained, a meat-based lunch requires a lot
more energy, land, and water resources to produce than a lunch that comes from
plant sources. Peanut butter, jelly, and bread are pretty low-impact foods.

If peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth, the campaign has recipes for
equally earth-friendly alternatives.
Cook
a batch of vegetarian chili, stir up some black bean soup, stuff a
falafel in a pita, try General Tso's Tofu, or roll together a bean
burrito. They're all tasty and can help slow global warming.

But the easiest way to start is with good ol' PB&J. Pack a
sandwich for yourself, your kids, and your spouse today. Grover will be
proud.

Billions). In the end, no matter where it's done, it's still wrong.

(Here's a tip for the Japanese: If you have to hide what you do, you

If you still don't understand why the murder of animals matters so much to me,
and why it should matter to you, three minutes and forty-five seconds will be

   Hunting for hunters
Thinning ranks may weaken economy, environment
   Leo Roth
   Staffwriter
(November 4, 2007) - DaleStatt of Honeoye Falls, a 35-year-old
mother of two boys, marriedinto a family of hunters.
When she took to the field for the first time with her husband,
Leigh, eight years ago, she loved it. Last year Statt bagged a
9-point buck, and she's looking forward to the start of shotgun
season for whitetails in New York state's Southern Zone in two
weeks.
"It's a wonderful sport. My husband has taught me so much about
it, and we look forward to teaching our kids," said Statt, who is
an executive administrative assistant for Fibertech Networks.
"Wehave a separate freezer for our venison. We eat more venison
thanbeef."
While the Statts eagerly look forward to another hunting season,
surveys and license sales continue to show that the American
hunter is an endangered species. Fewer younger people are taking
up the sport and more adults are leaving it.
   Concerns rise
More than 87 million U.S. citizens age 16 or older fished,
huntedor watched wildlife in 2006, spending more than $120
billion,according to the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service survey of wildlife-associated recreation
conducted every five years. The figures are from a preliminary
report. The final report will be issued this month. While these
figures represent a still robust hunting industry making a
profound impact on the economy, the total number of hunters
nationwide has slid from a peak of 19.1 million in 1975 to
12.5 million. In 2006, New York state ranked sixth in the number
of resident and nonresident hunters at 576,000 and ninth in
  hunting-related expenditures, at$683
million. Those numbers are down from 714,000 and $822 million in
2001.

Kucinich Will Impeach Cheney
 Rep. Dennis Kucinich introduced
H.Res. 333 in April to impeach Vice

Kucinich's courageous act will put members of the House on

Sharkwater I don't have time now to fully review Rob Stewart's Sharkwater,
which opened in theaters this past weekend. However, I don't think it will stay
in theaters much longer unless more people turn out for it. I saw a 9:30
showing of the film last night in Cambridge, and if me and my friends from the
BVA hadn't been there, only one person would have been in that room. Hopefully
it did better on Friday and Saturday, and is doing better elsewhere.

While Sharkwater repeats itself too often and feels a bit too long, it is
involving throughout, and I certainly hope that it is nominated for an Academy
Award. It's done well at film festivals, but more people need to become aware
of its message. If it's playing near you, this is a documentary that you should
see on the big screen now instead of waiting to see on DVD, if for no other
reason than to be amazed by the underwater photography. But, more importantly,
the sooner the word gets out about sharks as creatures to be respected and
protected instead of feared, the better chance we have of raising the awareness
that could save them from being wiped out (for something as stupid as shark fin
soup, no less). Check your local papers or online for theaters near you.

Subject: (sample letter) Bly me Celine Dion..

Doesn´t Celine Dion turns to God seriously with that singing phrase; ´We ask
that life be kind´ in her most beautiful song ´The Prayer´ whenever it´s
sung?
Then why not starting to be kind herself at first by giving that véry same
example, just bly´s me. Apparently one of the most beautiful female voices ever
known has a cold undertone inside.

Pléase copy and past onto this link to be the recordcompany Sony BMG Music

'artist question'

"Dear sir/madam,

Recently, I heard that Celine Dion has asked the matador (bullfighter) Tejela
to promote her new album and concerts by appearing in the album and on a large
screen during her concerts. Furthermore, she is financing a replica of the
Mexico City bullring in Las Vegas. I wonder why she would promote the
bullfighting industry, because bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of
animal abuse. Tens of thousands of bulls and hundreds of horses are tortured
and killed, just to amuse the public. A matador is not a hero. He uses other
bullfighters to weaken the bull, before he stabs it to death. The bull is
tortured with lances, barbed spears, swords and daggers, until it collapses
after a long death struggle.

More and more people turn their backs on bullfighting, because of this
cruelty.
Please, pass my message on to Celine and her agent, because I think it is very
important that she does not finance the replica of the Mexican bullring and
that she should turn away the bullfighter Tejela. This man has killed hundreds
of sentiënt beïngs like all of these innocent bulls are and he has blood on
his hands.

This is not good for Celine's reputation. If you are not convinced, please

Eagerly awaiting your response.

Dear kerri,
I'm writing to update you on several recent initiatives related to animals and
religion at Humane Society International. This October, groups around the world
celebrated animals and HSI helped dogs and their owners in Iran. Also, share
your own story of how an animal has influenced your faith.

The Blessing of the Animals: Celebrating Animals Worldwide
The Blessing of the Animals -- held every year on or around October 4 -- has
become a worldwide festival celebrated by a variety of religions in recognition
of our animal friends. This year, HSI asked many of the groups we work with
around the globe to share with us their celebrations of this event. From Peru
to Saipan to Cameroon, churches and communities came together to honor all
animals.

Iran: Government Crackdown on Pets Halted
Harassment of petkeepers by officials in Tehran subsided in mid-October after
an international outcry that included a formal letter of protest from HSI and a
one-hour Voice of America Farsi-language broadcast on the subject that reached
an estimated 14 million Iranian homes. Read Dr. Unti's account of how he helped
give pets and the people who love them a voice.

Share Your Story: How Has an Animal Influenced Your Faith?

individuals to spread compassion for all animals. We want to hear your
inspirational stories of how animals have played a meaningful role in your

All-vegans-unite Re: URGENT!!! Think Bad About the Government Go to Jail - House Passes "

2007-11-09 Thread Kerri Milam
Title: Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007
Bill Number: H.R. 1955
Sponsor: Representative Jane Harman (D-CA)
Number of Cosponsors: 14
Bill Summary:
According to supporters, the measure will play an important role in helping
government and law enforcement officials understand and prevent domestic
terrorism. In a speech on the House floor advocating passage of the bill, Rep.
Jane Harman (D-Calif.) -- the coauthor and initial sponsor of the measure --
warned that the next time the U.S. faces a terrorist threat, "my assumption is
that many who attack us will already be here, and some will be US citizens." To
prevent that attack, she said, the new "legislation will help the nation
develop a better understanding of the forces that lead to homegrown terrorism,
and the steps we can take to stop it."
Critics of the measure allege that it is a thinly veiled and dangerous attempt
to criminalize dissent. Such concern is based on the bill's vague and
open-ended language that, critics say, could be used by the government to
trample basic rights to free speech and assembly and turn legitimate dissent
into thought crimes.
The legislation, for instance, defines "violent radicalization" as "the process
of adopting or promoting an extremist belief system for the purpose of
facilitating ideologically based violence to advance political, religious, or
social change." The bill makes no attempt to define what an "extremist belief
system" might be. Nor does it define the action of "facilitating ideologically
based violence."
In its section on key findings related to homegrown terrorism, the measure
gives lip-service to constitutional rights, but also singles out the Internet
and its open market for the flow of ideas and information as part of the
problem. According to the measure, "The Internet has aided in facilitating
violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown
terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and
constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens."
The unspoken threat implied by that passage is that the government might have
to clamp down on free speech online. "At base," wrote retired Col. Dan Smith in
Counterpunch, "Harman's proposal seems to be a direct attack on First Amendment
rights."
Bill Status:
H.R. 1955 passed the House by a landslide vote of 404-6 on October 23, 2007
(Roll Call Vote 993). The bill has been received by the Senate and was referred
to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
Our Position:
The John Birch Society opposes the passage of vaguely worded legislation that
could lead federal agencies to arbitrarily define some modes of thought as one
or more varieties of "extremist belief systems." In the 18th Century, the
British government of King George III certainly believed as much about the
manner of thought adopted by America's Founding Fathers. The John Birch Society
believes the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act will
have a substantial chilling effect on both free speech and thought and that the
Senate should reject the measure.
Recommended Action:
1) Contact your senators using the alert below. Ask them to oppose the passage
of H.R. 1955.
2) E-mail this link to others in your sphere of influence, ask them to voice
their opposition to H.R. 1955 as well.
Thank you,
The John Birch Society
Standing for family and freedom since 1958

Does this have anything to do with ego conflicts between the upper classes?

Does this mean that in the USA they are going to change the constitution to

"freedom of speech" codes?

Oh, btw, Is there a group for vegan entrepeneurs?

It must all get back to identity issues. Conflicts arise over the assumption
that this material existence is more real than it is in truth. It is the
illusion of the river. If you look at the river do you say "there is the
river"? What is the river? Is the river the banks of the river or is the
river the water? If the river is the water, then that water is constantly
changing. One moment there is a body of water and the next minute that body of
water is replaced. Now what if that river is the river of time?

I need to meditate on this in hopes of developing a better understanding.
Because, frankly, I am having trouble understanding.

All-vegans-unite Gourmet vegan meals delivered to your home

2007-11-10 Thread Kerri Milam
Gourmet vegan meals delivered to your home I've been meaning to write up
BuyKind.com for weeks now. For some reason I thought I had, but quick search
revealed that, no, I haven't.

So, if you aren't yet aware of BuyKind, let me paint you a picture.

Ever wanted to visit any of the following top-notch vegan restaurants?:

   Sublime in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Good Karma in Venice Beach, California

   Lovin' Spoonfuls in Tucson, Arizona

The Vegetable Garden in Rockville, Maryland

Red Avocado in Iowa City, Iowa

Spiral Diner & Bakery in Ft. Worth, Texas
Me, too. I imagine if you live in a city with no creative vegan options, you're
even more keen to try some of the amazing food these restaurants serve. And,
with BuyKind, you can.

Now, you're not getting the experience of the decor and being surrounded by
other people sampling delicious vegan food, plus you're basically just
reheating meals as if they're leftovers, but I've tried this service a couple
of times now, and, for the most part, it works. Packing up gourmet meals and
shipping the via DHL does bring with it some compromises, but the food still
tastes great, even if sometimes shipment co-mingles certain items or shakes up
your key lime pie a bit too much.

My wife and I had a couple of entrees from The Vegetable Garden, including the
Veggie Sesame "Beef" with Yams. My wife got a similar entree, I want to say the
"chicken" with asparagus, but it might have been the "beef" with pineapple
(hazards of waiting too long to write the review!). At any rate, the ideal
preparation for both was pretty much the same.

Since the veggies and fruits heat up much faster than the faux meats, you can
either separate them first and add the produce once the mock meats are getting
hot or, if they're too stuck together, you can warm them all at once in a large
frying pan, separating out the yams and such as they get hot, which is what I
did, though I recommend the other option to make sure everything is hot at the
same time.

All it took was a little olive oil and some heat, and the entree was good to
go. Instructions for the brown rice were to reheat in a small saucepan with a
little extra water, and this actually worked out great. The meals were
delicious, if unevenly heated. The key lime pie was a bit on the chalky side,
but that didn't stop me from eating every last bite for dessert.

Now, there is a fair amount of packaging involved. I couldn't reuse the boxes
the meals were shipped in, since they were so beat up, nor could I reuse the
foam (my main strike against ordering food like this), but I have reused the
ice packs a couple of times (they're super-handy!) and my wife reuses the
take-out containers to bring other leftovers to work. But, if you're only doing
this once in a while, and ordering maybe a few meals at once, then you're
probably getting the most out of this service.

One delivery could save you 2-3 trips to restaurants in your car, and this adds
up to a financial savings, too. It may seem like expensive to order online, but
if you factor in the cost of driving to and from 2-3 restaurants like this, and
tipping a server each time, you start to find the expense closer to the real
cost of eating out, so the price is not unreasonable at all for people who'd be
dining at a restaurant for $10-15 meals anyway.

You can place your order at BuyKind.com. It's definitely a home-grown website,
with awkward navigation, a couple of broken links, plenty over-sized (but
mouthwatering) photos that take too long to download, etc., but don't let that
dissuade you from getting your tastebuds on some delightful food!

In fact, soon BuyKind will be offering delivery from Madeleine Bistro, my
favorite vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, so keep checking back, and please
comment on your experience below.

PS - BuyKind has kindly offered to donate to the Boston Vegan Association 10%
of the profits on any purchase you make when you use the BOSTON code at
check-out. These proceeds will be used to promote the expansion of veganism in
the Boston area.

All-vegans-unite Health24.com Nov. 2007 article "10 Interesting Vegetarian Facts"

2007-11-13 Thread Kerri Milam
Some stuff we already know and maybe some new things we don't in this recent
article. I noticed a disrepancy in numbers 9 & 10 though -- Brad Pitt and
Angelina dine on flesh foods (as reported in some publications & media photos)
and historian Rynn Berry wrote an entire book countering the Hitler myth (he
used to dine on pigeon flesh).

Just a little food for thought! : )

 10 interesting vegetarian facts
 Health24.com

Thought you knew everything there is to know about the vegetarian diet? These
few facts may surprise you:
1. Vegetarianism has traditionally been linked to the people of ancient India.
Even today, Indians make up more than 70 percent of the world's vegetarian
population.
2. The first Vegetarian Society was formed in 1847 in England. The main aim of
the members was to dispel the common belief that it's not possible to lead a
healthy life without eating meat.
3. There are varying degrees of vegetarianism. The strictest of vegetarians
not only steer clear of all forms of meat, they also avoid all animal products,
including honey (bees are often killed in the production of honey), and foods
which might contain traces of animal products, such as bread baked in buttered
tins and sugar to which bone charcoal has been added (to make it white).
4. You might recall the scene in Notting Hill where William Thacker (Hugh
Grant) goes on a blind date with a slightly off-the-wall "fruitarian".
Fruitarianism is a very real form of vegetarianism, where the diet consists of
fruit, nuts, seeds and other plant material that can be gathered without
killing the plant (e.g. pears can be picked without killing the plant, carrots
cannot).
5. Many vegetarians follow a meat-free diet in an attempt to lower the
pressure meat production places on the environment. According to Wikipedia.org,
growing crops for farm animals requires nearly half of the United States'
water supply and 80% of its agricultural land.
6. Other people go the vegetarian route for religious reasons. Some of the
denominations that actively advocate vegetarianism include the Hare Krishna and
 Rastafarian movements.
7. British research shows that a child's IQ predicts his likelihood of
becoming a vegetarian as a young adult. You guessed it: the smarter the child,
the more likely he'll eventually shun meat.
8. While veggie eating holds many health benefits, it also has other
interesting effects on the body: research shows that avoiding red meat improves
the sex appeal of male body odour.
9. The list of famous vegetarians includes Sir Paul McCartney, Ozzy Osborne,
Sinead O'Connor, Brad Pitt, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and Leonardo da Vinci.
10. And then, of course, it's believed that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian
during the latter part of his life. In fact, it's said that he predicted that
the world of the future would be vegetarian. Records show that Hitler amused
himself by telling grim stories of slaughterhouses while entertaining
meat-eating guests. When they were put off their food, he would mock them for
their hypocrisy. On one such occasion, he remarked: "That shows how cowardly
people are. They can't face doing certain horrible things themselves, but they
enjoy the benefits without a pang of conscience.”

CNN Television is reporting an outbreak of the dangerous strain of bird flu in
England (I believe on a turkey farm).

Bird Flu is another result of dangerous industrial farming practices.

Hopefully, it will make some people think twice about eating turkeys for the
holidays, which are subject to extreme cruelty.

All-vegans-unite Fwd: Oxford U student newspaper article with Lindy Greene (AR extroidinaire)

Lindy Greene wrote:Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:36:22 -0800
Subject: [AntiFurSociety] RE: Oxford U student newspaper asked me to comment...

Oxford University asked me to comment on two recent ALF arson attacks against
a couple of its vivisectors' cars. I incorporated and revised some of what I
said in the LA Times about Edythe London:

Vivisection is simultaneously an animal rights and a human rights issue. Data
from one species cannot be extrapolated to another with more than 5-25%
reliability (note that simply tossing a coin would yield 50%) and explains why
no cures come down the pike for decades. It also underlies the multiple
thousands of consumer injuries and deaths each year from adverse reactions to
drugs and products tested "safe" in animals.

The experimental psychology hobgoblins are the most perverted of the lot.
Cognizant that animal abuse is the hallmark symptom of psychopathology, they
visit their darkest compulsions on animals while their dysfunctional
consciences are not pricked in the slightest by the knowledge that they are
concomitantly harming humans. They provide the incontrovertible proof that
their condition is irremediable by any recognized modern therapeutic modality.

History strives to teach us lessons that we stubbornly refuse to learn. When
legitimate grievances go consistently unheard and unaddressed, the attendant
frustration expresses itself with increasing vehemence. Every sociopolitical
movement has ultimately had to resort to violence against the oppressors or
their property as a consequence of the inescapable observation that it is the
only means to engage with those whose native cognitive and empathic deficits
render them otherwise unreachable and impervious to reform.

The Animal Liberation Front adheres to a non-negotiable policy that no life -
human or animal - be harmed during an action. The vivisectors perpetrate the
most heinous of atrocities against animals on a daily basis but solicit public
sympathy and clamor for law enforcement assistance when a little deserved
retribution finally comes their way. Like all psychopaths, they can dish it
out but can't take it.

Activists who have the guts and gumption to risk life, limb, and liberty to
stand up for sentient beings who cannot speak or act in their own behalf are
always the unsung heroes who must endure the libelous barbs of those who lack
the equivalent courage and moral fortitude. It is up to the brave warriors of
the "moonlight militia" to dispense the only justice available to creatures
whom society would arbitrarily place outside the circle of moral compassion
and beyond the reach of effective defense.

[Note: Photos (click here) and video of the below raid are available by

 Received anonymously
 NOVEMBER 5, 2007

On the night of Thursday November 1st, the Animal Liberation Front entered a
shed at Shepherd's Egg Farm near Spanish Fork, Utah to liberate as many hens as
possible from this living hell.

In this single shed out of several, we saw literally tens of thousands of hens
suffering in conditions even worse than we imagined. Words cannot sufficiently
capture this nightmare. They were so crowded in battery cages they could hardly
move at all, let alone spread their wings. They all had significant feather
loss from struggling to get through the wire cages to escape for their lives.
Many birds had their heads or wings stuck in the wires of their cages, and were
left to die because they could not reach any food or water. Their beaks had
been mutilated by factory workers. Everyday they must breathe in the
overwhelming and disgusting stench from the mountains of manure below their
cages. It should be no surprise that none of these birds receive one bit of
veterinary care for their numerous injuries and diseases. There was a hole in
the floor of the farm for workers to throw dead birds into a garbage can below
(see footage). While the view inside Shepherd's Eggs was
gruesome, it is in no way unique. These cruelties can be found in all modern
egg farms, including so-called "free range" facilities.

We moved quickly to remove as many birds as we could. We knew that Shepherd's
Eggs cared so little about their birds that they would likely not even notice
that they were gone. We took one or two from each cage, so the remaining
chickens would have a little more room. The exploiters will try to scare
consumers out of supporting this liberation by saying we increased a risk of
some sort of biological contamination. This is a lie. We took every possible
precaution to ensure we wouldn't harm the hens or ourselves, including being
covered head to toe with all of the necessary bio-safety gear.

Altogether we rescued 102 hens. All hens received veterinary care and were
placed in loving homes. They ran around their new homes with joy, appreciative
of their first experience of freedom. None were released into the wild. In
their new homes they all have access to the outdoors. They can all breathe in
fresh air. They are able to dust bathe and scratch the soil, instead of metal
wires. They will all live out their full lifespan here instead of being killed
when no longer profitable. In other words, these chickens can finally live like
chickens.

All sentient animals, like these chickens, will always suffer as long as they
are seen as nothing more than objects whose exploitation leads to increased
profits and cheaper food. The only solution is to simply stop buying eggs and
other animal products. Less than 1% of the hens at Shepherd's Eggs could be
rescued today. It's up to consumers to save the other 99%.

Until consumers become responsible and stop paying the exploiters, you can
count on the ALF to continue hurting their profits directly through property
destruction and other forms of economic sabotage. Around the world the ALF is
making progress and saving lives. This action is dedicated to all animal
liberation prisoners including Barry Horne. Barry died six years ago today on a
hunger strike. He would still be alive today if it wasn't for the stubborn
cruelty of humanity. We will never forget Barry and we will never forgive the
exploiters.

 Hello everyone,
I just wanted to ask if you could check out the dvds currently being sold on
ebay by various sellers which boast of scenes of fox hunting before the ban,
including hounds in cry, digging out etc. I'm worried these are providing
both support and encouragement to the fox hunting industry. I feel it is
also realistic to say that these dvds could also encourage some individuals
to join or follow hunts which still operate outside of the law, which as we
all know is still a massive problem at the moment.
If you've got a spare five mins I would like to ask if you could all email
ebays customer services on ukrswebhelp@ ebay.com asking them to permanently
remove and ban such items. while I admit it's not perfect I have included a
sample email at the bottom of the page- feel free to send your own but
 please keep them polite and constructive. Item numbers for the dvds include;
 280173208684, 330188526815, 330188741522, 180182950236 with item numbers
220172580357 and 280174284940 while they state they are for educational
purposes only they also state that they can improve your fox hunting
skills...sick hey? Thanks for your time.

 Sample email

I wish to draw your attention to ebay being used for the sale of dvds that
are promoting the illlegal bloodsport of fox hunting, items such as
330188741522 and 180182950236 proudly boast of views of the hunt in action
while item 280174284940 actually implies that individuals will be better at
hunting a fox after watching it. There are a number of dvds of the same
nature, a simple search under fox hunting dvds brings up a wide range. I
feel it is a major concern that ebay is being used for the promotion and
encouragement of what is an illegal and barbaric activity and it is with
this that I ask ebay to strongly consider the removal of these items with a
ban instigated for future items that could be seen to promote illegal fox
 hunting, Many thanks.

Subject: Fox hunting dvd's sold on ebay

 Dear ebay customer services
It has been brought to our immediate attention that ebay customers are
selling dvd's promoting scenes of fox hunting with dogs. This thankfully is
now an illegal sport and has no place being promoted on a public website.
The majority of people in the UK are against this barbaric and outdated
blood sport which inflicts the most heinous crimes on our wildlife, we
therefore politely urge you to implement a ban on the sale and distribution
of this type of offensive material.
We suspect that you will receive many other complaints of this nature and we
feel that from a moral as well as a legal point of view you should give this
your immediate attention. Any other product that promotes animal cruelty ie
fur items being sold on ebay should be removed without hesitation.
May we also remind you that hunting with dogs is now illegal therefore any
promotion of this on ebay is in direct contravention of the law. The items
numbers for your perusal are 280173208684, 330188526815, 330188741522,
 180182950236, 220172580357, and 280174284940.
 Thank you
 Best wishes

This is an excellent list of many important AR videos. I would encourage
everyone to download or save in your email files and use them to send to others
who are not aware of the many abuses of animals. Many are in German as that is

Thanks!

The vast majority of people in Britain eat meat but have little knowledge of
how that meat ends up on their table. In a powerful observational documentary,
Slaughterhouse: The Task of Blood reveals the day-to-day workings of a small,
family-run abattoir and attempts to get inside the minds of the people who work
there. It's a hidden part of British life, but the reality is that thousands of
animals are slaughtered every day in abattoirs. This film shows the process of
meat production as animals are killed, butchered and stored in fridges before
being transported to retail outlets. It reveals the attitudes of the workers to
their task, their colleagues and life. Slaughterhouse: The Task Of Blood is
produced by BAFTA award winning film-maker, Brian Hill.

http://veg-tv.info/Earthlings

Wegmans Cruelty is a documentary produced by a small investigative team from

Wegmans Food Markets to try to hold some meaningful dialogue about the
conditions at Wegmans Egg Farm, and were then misled and dismissed by Wegmans
representatives. The team set out to capture actual footage inside the farm and
create a film based on their experience. The film features statements from
Wegmans representatives, interviews with the investigators, and footage of what
life and death is like inside of an "Animal Care Certified" battery cage
facility.

I want to compliment you on a phenomenal documentary. It is extremely
powerful and I was so thrilled to see you covered everything that Al Gore did
not. It flows so well from the global warming problem to livestock to the
health aspects and finishing up with the brutal and horrific treatment of the
animals for what ... a meal? I am so sensitive to the feelings of animals
that I shook uncontrollably for about a half an hour after I had managed to
stop crying - it is quite unbelievable to me that anyone can treat anything in
such a manner - the cow's tears will never leave me - as all the shocking
atrocities committed against all these sentient beings. How can we possibly
call our society civilized? I keep copies of many of the documentaries made
about animal suffering such as Earthlings, Meet your Meat, If this is Kosher,
Delicacy of Despair and others, which I either give to people or loan out but
to be honest with you I cannot watch as I become
immobilized - I did watch yours and it is inconceivable what is done to these
innocent beings. Anyone with an ounce of morality will change their life
after watching your documentary for the sake of the animals, the earth and
their health.

I plan to ask some people I know who belong to synagogues here to set up
appointments with several rabbis and give them a copy of the documentary and
ask whether they would share this with their congregation - actually the way
I feel right now I just want to put up huge screens everywhere and make sure
the public see the indescribable suffering these animals endure and the
treatment of them for nothing more than an unhealthy meal. I have found that
a powerful tool I use for those people insensitive to animal suffering is
giving them a copy of The China Study to read, and everyone I have given the
book to (my daughter finds that her friends have become vegan after she has
given them Skinny Bitch) has gone vegan (one gentleman in South Africa aged 88
and one in Florida aged 83) and from there have begun to explore the books
available on food and animals such as your book Richard and John Robbins and
Howard Lyman's books - many have written to me and said that
they cannot believe they once ate animals after reading about the treatment
of the animals and the illness that can be avoided by going vegan.

Thank you for making such a powerful, powerful and truthful documentary that
I believe will educate the public about the urgency of changing our habits if
they are wise enough to do so, and will help the precious animals and our
planet.

PLease Cross post widely and ask rescues to send used collars for
this project see address below.

This photographer Chris Jordan, is famous for making social
commentary by creating large photos that demonstrate the scale in
which we consume products and discard them without a care.

He wants to do one on the daily disposal & death of companion
animals. He has asked for the rescue community to mail used animal
collars so he can create a large scale piece to symbolize the
number of animals killed in the USA.

Chris Jordan's work is shown in museums and galleries world wide,
and the subject of a recent documentary. A link to see some of his
work is: http://www.chrisjordan.com/current_ set2.php
Please support his efforts. He needs 200 collars to make this a
reality.

Hello Vicki,
thank you for your touching message. I have been thinking for quite
awhile about doing a piece about this. The best idea I have so far
is to use collars. I have been talking to several humane societies
around the country, trying to find a few hundred collars, but I
can't find anywhere that has them and is willing to give them to me.
Do you know of a source for a couple of shopping bags full of used
dog and cat collars? If so I would do a piece about this subject
right away.

Cheers and warm regards,

All-vegans-unite Help end the live dog lab at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

2007-11-28 Thread Kerri Milam

Can you help us end the live
dog labs at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine? Twenty years
ago, live animals were commonly used in physiology, pharmacology, and surgery
classes at medical schools. A standard lab involved anesthetizing the animal,
followed by injecting pharmaceuticals or practicing surgical techniques. After
the class, the animal was killed.
Today, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is the
only medical school that still uses dogs in these cruel and unnecessary
exercises. Between February and April 2008, two live dog labs are scheduled to
take place at Case Western as part of surgery electives.
Fortunately, most schools have eliminated live animal labs from
their curricula altogether. Innovations in medical simulation technology,
availability of alternatives, increased awareness of ethical concerns, and a
growing acknowledgement that medical training must be human-focused have all
facilitated this shift. Only 11 schools in the United States still use live
animals (dogs or pigs) in their curricula.
  What You Can Do:
Send an e-mail to the dean of the School of Medicine and
urge her to immediately end the use of live dogs in the surgery courses. Or,
you can write to her at the addresses below. Being polite is the most effective
way to help these dogs.

DawnWatch: Bizarro on chicken breast feeding 11/28/07
  Posted by: "DawnWatch" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 karendawn1 Wed Nov 28,
2007 2:27 pm(PST) Here's a DawnWatch to make you
smile:
Check out today's, November 28, Bizarro cartoon!
You'll find it on line at:
 http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/Bizarro.asp?date=20071128

Bizarro, created by Dan Piraro, is internationally syndicated in 250
newspapers. It has won the National Cartoonists’ Society’s "Best Newspaper
Cartoon Panel" three times and been nominated many more. If your paper is one
of the many, including the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, which carry
Bizarro, today's cartoon gives you a great opportunity for a letter to the
editor about the serious point behind the laugh. I just singled out two huge
newspapers, but smaller papers publish a much higher proportion of letters they
receive, so if your smaller paper carries Bizarro, why not dash off a quick
note. If you can't find the email address for a letter to the editor, I am
happy to help.
Always include your full name, address, and daytime phone number when sending
a letter to the editor.

If your paper doesn't carry Bizarro (astounding New York papers don't, though
the sensibility is so New York) you might want to put in a good word for it
with the cartoon editor. While it is certainly not an animal rights cartoon,
the creator is an animal rights guy, so there are fun animal message cartoons
from time to time.

I am going to take this opportunity to note with delight that Dan Piraro and
King have granted me permission to use about forty of his cartoons in my
upcoming book. ("Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way we Treat Animals" --
Harper). Meanwhile, you'll find many of his animal friendly cartoons, and
information about his own books on his site www.Bizarro. com

In case you can't get to the link above, showing today's Bizarro cartoon, I
will give the joke away (stop reading now if you plan to take a look):
The cartoon is headed, "Chicken breast feeding." A gal is sitting in a cafe
wearing a "Go Veg" t-shirt. She says to the woman next to her, who is feeding
her toddler pieces of chicken breast, "MUST you do that in public?"

McDonald's is taking in-school marketing to a new low.
Last week, students in Seminole County, Florida received their report cards
in envelopes adorned with the Ronald McDonald promising a free Happy Meal to
students in kindergarten through fifth grade with good grades, behavior, or
attendance. Targeting children directly with the message that doing well in
school should be rewarded by a Happy Meal undermines parents' efforts to
encourage healthy eating. And if parents want to reward their kids' school
performance, they are intelligent enough to determine what kind of reward, if
any, is appropriate. They don't need any help from a corporation whose real
concern is its bottom line.

Tell McDonald's: Stop advertising on report cards.
The promotion highlights McDonald's duplicity when it when comes to marketing
to children. McDonald's has pledged to stop all advertising in elementary
schools. When questioned about the report cards, a McDonald's spokesperson
claimed the promotion isn't marketing. If that's what McDonald's believes,
their pledge isn't worth the paper it is printed on.
McDonald's has also received kudos for its pledge to only advertise its
healthier options to children under twelve, yet the Happy Meal promotion
explicitly mentions cheeseburgers, French fries, and soft drinks; Happy Meals
featured on the report card can contain as many as 710 calories, 28 grams of
fat, or 35 grams of sugar.
On Wednesday, we were alerted to the promotion by an Orlando-area parent.
Within twenty-four hours, our concerns about the report cards ignited a
nation-wide controversy, including stories in the New York Times, the
Associated Press, and a front-page story in Orlando. Now we need your help to
put an end this outrageous advertising.
Tell McDonald's: No advertising on report cards.
*If you live in Seminole County, please also take a moment to email the
school board and urge them to end all report card advertising.

"I'm excited they're going to get a second chance," said Joan Sammond,
executive director the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The dogs were among a group 53 pit bulls seized from the Virginia home of the
suspended Falcons quarterback. Rebecca J. Huss, an animal law expert at the
Valparaiso University School of Law, was appointed guardian of the dogs by U.S.
District Judge Henry E. Hudson in October. This week Huss filed a motion
recommending the surviving dogs seized from the property on June 22 be placed
with eight different rescue groups. Six other dogs have either died or had to
be euthanized.
Valparaiso spokesman Tom Shaer said it is likely the judge will approve the
motion and order the dogs placed with the various groups, including Best
Friends Animal Society in Utah and BAD RAP, a group in California that
specializes in pit bull rescue.
"Professor Huss expects the dogs to be moved by the end of the month to these
eight facilities," Shaer said.
As part of the recommendation, the groups getting the dogs will also receive
funding to help pay for their care. Dogs that were deemed adoptable will come
with $5,000, while those that might need to spend a long period of time, or
their entire lives, in a shelter or sanctuary will come with $20,000.
Sammond said the organization hopes that even the dog that requires lifetime
care will eventually be adoptable. The earliest any would be available for
adoption is mid-February, she said.
Vick has deposited $928,073.04 into an escrow account to pay for the
evaluation and care of the dogs. He's also scheduled to be sentenced Monday
after pleading guilty Aug. 27 to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge. Two
co-defendants were sentenced last week to 18 and 21 months in prison.
The U.S. Attorney's office filed a motion this week urging the judge to accept
Huss' recommendations, saying the "amount of effort and attention to detail by
Professor Huss is nothing short of extraordinary."
Shaer said the school is proud of Huss' work.
"We consider this to be the beginning of a very happy ending for these dogs,
which were once commonly expected to be put down," he said.

exciting international developments for The Witness, and the introduction of
a new feature called "Movement Watch", which encourages critical thinking

Help Enforce EU Ban on Battery Cages

In 1999, the European Union decided that battery cages for hens
would be banned by 2012. Now, members of the egg industry and
some EU countries are lobbying to overturn or delay the ban.

MORE INFO:

Help enforce EU ban on battery cages

In 1999, the European Union judged that battery cages are so cruel they should
be banned across the EU and passed legislation, known as the Laying Hens
Directive, requiring the egg industry to stop confining hens in battery cages
by 2012. Not surprisingly, members of the egg industry and some EU member
states are lobbying to overturn or delay the ban because they mistakenly
believe it will be economically damaging. In truth, it costs only pennies more
to produce cage-free eggs instead of battery eggs, and surveys show that most
consumers are willing to pay more for cage-free eggs. Many retailers and
foodservice operators, including Marks and Spencer, McDonald's, Starbucks, and
Waitrose, support the ban and sell only cage-free eggs in the UK. The cost will
be even less if the government subsidises cage-free producers.

A few extra pence is a small price to pay to help lessen animal suffering. Each
year in the EU, around 300 million hens are crammed into filthy wire-mesh
battery cages stacked tier upon tier in huge warehouses. Several birds are
crowded into each cage, packed so tightly together that they are unable to
spread even one wing. The birds suffer crippling leg injuries from standing on
wire cage floors 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until they are killed.
Their bones are brittle both from forced inactivity and because calcium is
leached from their bodies to produce eggs. Many more hens suffer from painful
injuries when they're ripped from their cages, thrown into transport crates,
and shipped to slaughter. Without even a shred of straw for comfort, all of the
hen’s natural instincts – including nesting, perching, scratching and pecking –
are denied. These birds never get the chance to breathe fresh air, feel the sun
on their backs, build nests, raise their young, or do
anything else that is natural and important to them.

Lord Rooker, the UK Minister for Sustainable Food and Farming and Animal
Health, recently announced that battery cages will be banned in the UK as of
2012, despite opposition from the egg industry and regardless of what happens
in the rest of Europe.

The egg industry and many EU Member States are pushing for the Laying Hens
Directive to be delayed for up to ten years. Germany has a separate nation ban
due to come into force earlier than the EU ban – in 2009. However now doubts
are cast over Germany’s commitment to their national ban as all the other
northern EU member states have stressed that they do not wish the ban to be
postponed but Germany is yet to make it clear whether or not they will support
a postponement.

You Can Help:

PETA is calling for Horst Seehofer, the German Agriculture Minister to lead the
way towards an EU ban on battery cages for hens and enforce Germany’s own
national ban in 2009. It is vitally important that the EU ban not be postponed
and come into force as planned in 2012. Please write to Horst Seehofer asking
him to help the 300 million hens in the EU who are currently crammed into
filthy wire-mesh battery cages stacked tier upon tier in huge warehouses.

Students kill, cook, eat baby raccoon in class

06:26 PM CST on

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

By Rucks Russell
11 News

A controversy is brewing at Columbus High School over the treatment of a
baby raccoon.

"They started stepping and stomping on it, joking they're tenderizing
the animal," Police Chief Danny Jackson.

"They skinned that raccoon, cooked it and ate it."

Some have described the incident, which occurred in October, as blatant
animal cruelty.

It happened during a wildlife management class in which students were
encouraged to harvest and prep wildlife to be cooked out back and
consumed.

"From what I understand, they bring the animals in dead. But these two
didn't.

They brought it in alive," Jackson said.

AP

Jackson says they then beat the animal to death in front of stunned
classmates.

According to the superintendent, it wasn't supposed to happen that
way.

He said a substitute teacher was in the class that day and simply didn't
know any better.

"And with the substitute teacher there, they in essence had permission
to process the animal there.

Regrettably that happened. It won't happen again," Superintendent Randy
Hoyer said.

Animal Cruelty 101?

Was killing the raccoon animal cruelty?

Yes!

No!

View Results

Those assurances come too late for the students who witnessed the
act. Their complaints led police and wildlife officials to
investigate.

But 11 News has learned there will be no criminal charges against the
two students involved because most of the witnesses have said the animal
died quickly.

"And so the suffering was minimal," Jackson said.

Whether it was cruel or just an unfortunate mistake depends on who you
ask.

"Basically everybody knows how to skin something, what's the difference
between a raccoon and a squirrel," student Charles Palachic said.

"It was animal cruelty," student Stephanie Zavala said.

The class is apparently part of a tradition at the school, where
students learn how to prepare food in the wild, should they ever need
to.

All-vegans-unite Fwd: Heifer International: Giving animal suffering for Christmas

2008-01-03 Thread Kerri Milam

R Eisenberg wrote:

 Dear friends,

I just received the Christmas issue of the Heifer
International catalogue, urging me to purchase an
animal to send to help feed the poor in developing
nations.

"Heifer International was founded in 1944 by Church of
the Brethren educator Dan West. His vision of a
worldwide program to end hunger and poverty was born
of his Christian faith. From the beginning, this
vision has encompassed all spiritual paths and all
people who understood that to serve God, we serve our
brothers and sisters."

In keeping with it's Christian roots Heifer
International is sacrificing animal lives to spread
it's message that humans have dominion over animals
and can do with them what they wish.

The following is a list of projects (i.e. animals
being sent to) in China. In total disregard of what
might happen to these animals in a nation that has the
worst track record for animal abuse on the planet,
they are sending livestock (i.e. living beings)as
breeding stock of future generations to be slaughtered
and consumed.

http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.2665753/

I cannot think of a more callous disregard for the
lives of these animals.

As you can see from looking at their website they have
projects in many other nations as well:

http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.2665753/

That they see this as a gesture of kindness only
highlights the Chiristian view that animals are
commodities to be bartered for ingratiating themselves
into the lives of the recipients. That they are
continuing the judeo/christian tradition of
permissible killing of animals at a time when there is
so much violence throughout the world, also
demonstrates that they do not understand the link
between violence to animals and violence to humans.

If you wish to protest their insensitivity to the
lives of our animal brethren please send you comments

All-vegans-unite Fwd: [STOP_HORSE_CRUELTY] Please call to help the horses Jan. 22

2008-01-17 Thread Kerri Milam

Call In Day Jan. 22 for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act! Please
help pass this important legislation to protect American horses from slaughter
by calling your Senators and Reps. You do not have to speak to them – just call
to voice your opinion so it is noted!

  http://www.animallawcoalition.com/horse-slaughter/article-210

Update: January 12, 2008: On Tuesday, January 22, 2008 call the U.S. Capitol
switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your U.S. representative and two U.S.
Senators.

Please call and urge each of your legislators to "Please cosponsor and push
for the passage of H.R. 503/S. 311 to protect horses from slaughter". Your
calls are critical.
Read Animal Law Coalition's report below for more information on the American
Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 503/S. 311, and how you can find and
contact representatives and senators considering this bill as well as your own
legislators.

Spread the word - ask every friend and family member to call.
Original report: On April 25, 2007 a U.S. Senate Conference Committee passed
the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, S.B. 311, by a vote of 15-7. The
bill, however, has not yet been voted on by the full Senate. But it is on the
Senate Calendar. Write or call your Senators now and urge them to vote yes on
S.B. 311. Find and contact Senators
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La) introduced the bill. There are 30 co-sponsors.

The horse slaughter industry lobbyists are there at the U.S. Capitol, working
to convince Senators to vote against the bill. The horses have only you. Horse
slaughter in the United States has been shut down by the dramatic federal court
rulings this year. But it's not over. U.S. horses can still be shipped to
other countries for slaughter for human consumption. This bill is essential to
ensure horses are not shipped abroad for slaughter for human consumption and
that U.S. slaughter houses never reopen.
Don't wait. Write or call now! Pass the link to this article to everyone you
know and ask them to help!
S.B. 311 and its counterpart in the House of Representatives, H.R. 503, would
amend the Horse Protection Act, 15 U.S.C. 1821 and end the "shipping,
transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling,
or donation of any horse or other equine to be slaughtered for human
consumption" in foreign or interstate commerce. Check ALC's Pending Bills for
copies of both the House and Senate versions.

Remember Beltex Corporation, owner of one of the now-shuttered Texas horse
slaughterhouses, also owns a controlling interest in a third slaughterhouse,
Empacadora de Carnes de Fresnillo, that operates in Mexico. There is no law
right now that stops the shipment of horses to Mexico or any other country for
slaughter. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2006 33,400
horses were sent from the U.S. to Mexico or Canada for slaughter.
  Illinois' Anti-Horse Slaughter Law
Notably, Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojjevich has signed H.B. 1711, making
it illegal in that state to slaughter horses for human consumption. This
stunning victory for the horses guarantees the horse slaughter house owned by
Cavel International, Inc. in DeKalb, Illinois will never reopen. The new law
also bans the export of Illinois horses for slaughter for human consumption.
  Other States
Other states are also attacking horse slaughter this year. Bills are pending
in New Jersey and New York that would end the sale, distribution or possession
of horses for slaughter for human consumption. The New York bill has already
passed the state senate.

We have started this blog topic in an effort to discover effective ways of
promoting veganism. Please tell us why you went vegan or vegetarian, what
motivated you, and what was your turning point?

Please try to be specific about what prompted you to go vegan or
vegetarian—not just the reasons why one should go vegan or vegetarian.

If there were any tactics that you feel kept you from being vegan sooner or
were not effective, please elaborate on those as well.

All-vegans-unite Fwd: HELP: Animal cruelty favored by Miami-Dade Commissioners - WRITE

Subject: HELP: Animal cruelty favored by Miami-Dade Commissioners - WRITE

 Please crosspost widely

On Tuesday, January 22, the Miami-Dade County Commission refused to vote on
the tethering ban ordinance that was proposed by the County's Dept. of Animal
Services. By refusing to vote, commissioners are allowing dogs to spend their
lives on the end of a chain. Please don't let this cruelty stand. Help the dogs
by writing to Commissioners.

The Commissioner's statements against the tethering ban showed that they
didn't care that chained dogs suffer terribly or that the AVMA, animal lovers
and animal protection groups condemn tethering. They were only concerned about
losing the votes of people who keep their dogs chained. Breeders and the AKC
lobbied against the ban.

At the bottom of this alert is the ban introduced by Miami-Dade Animal
Services.

 WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Write and fax the Miami-Dade County Commissioners. Explain why chaining is
cruel. Tell them to be humane and pass a ban that protects dogs. Other
jurisdictions have enacted tethering ban ordinances. If you plan to boycott
travel to Miami Beach and Miami until a good tethering ban is passed, please
say so.

 Facts about chaining:

 Continuous tethering makes dogs aggressive:

A 1994 study by the Centers for Disease Control found that chained dogs are
2.8 times more likely to bite.

The American Veterinary Medical Association said in 2003, "Never tether or
chain your dog because this can contribute to aggressive behavior."

When confronted with a threat, dogs instinctively run or fight. A chained dog,
unable to flee, often feels forced to fight, attacking any unfamiliar animal or
person who comes into his or her territory. Children have been injured or
killed after going into a chained dog's area, or encountering a dog who has
broken free from a chain.

 Continuous tethering is inhumane:

In 1996, The United States Department of Agriculture said, "Our experience in
enforcing the Animal Welfare Act has led us to conclude that continuous
confinement of dogs by a tether is inhumane."

Tethered dogs are easy targets for attacks by other animals. They are killed
or injured by extremes in weather, poisoned by humans, and made sick from
animal feces or bird droppings. In many cases, the necks of chained dogs become
raw and covered with sores from the dogs' constant yanking and straining to
escape confinement. Dogs have been found with collars embedded in their necks.

Dogs are social animals. Tethering inflicts cruelty on dogs by forcing them to
live in solitary confinement, unable to interact normally. Lonely and isolated,
chained dogs are know to bark excessively at all hours of the day and night.

The tethering ban proposed by Miami-Dade County Animal Services:

 Sec. 5-21. Tethering of dogs.
 (a) As used in this section, tether means to restrain a dog by tying the dog
to any object or structure, including without limitation a house, tree, fence,
post, garage, or shed, by any means, including without limitation a chain,
rope, cord, leash, or running line. Tethering shall not include using a leash
to walk a dog.
 (b) It shall be unlawful for a responsible party to tether the dog while
outdoors, except when all of the following conditions are met:
 (1) The dog is in visual range of the responsible party, and the responsible
party is located outside with the dog.
 (2) The tether is connected to the dog by a buckle-type collar or a body
harness made of nylon or leather, not less than one inch in width.
 (3) The tether has the following properties: it is at least five times the
length of the dog's body, as measured from the tip of the nose to the base of
the tail; it terminates at both ends with a swivel; it does not weigh more than
1/8 of the dog's weight; and it is free of tangles.
 (4) The dog is tethered in such a manner as to prevent injury, strangulation,
or entanglement.
 (5) The dog is not outside during a period of extreme weather, including
without limitation extreme heat or near-freezing temperatures, thunderstorms,
tornadoes, tropical storms, or hurricanes.
 (6) The dog has access to water, shelter, and dry ground.
 (7) The dog is at least six (6) months of age. Puppies shall not be tethered.
 (8) The dog is not sick or injured.
 (9) Pulley, running line, or trolley systems are at least 15 feet in length
and are less than 7 feet above the ground.
 (10) If there are multiple dogs, each dog is tethered separately.

All-vegans-unite are you a homegrown terrorist?

2008-01-24 Thread Kerri Milam

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-w-whitehead/are-you-a-homegrown-terro_b_82935\
.html
The Huffington Post. 23 January 2008.
Are You a Homegrown Terrorist?

On its face, the Act, which was approved in the U.S. House of
Representatives by a vote of 404 to 6, would establish two
government-appointed bodies (one a national 10-member
commission, the other a university-based Center for
Excellence) to study, monitor and propose ways of curbing
homegrown terrorism and extremism in the United States.
However, as journalist Jessica Lee points out, the
legislation could actually succeed in "broaden[ing] the
definition of terrorism to encompass both First Amendment
political activity and traditional forms of protest such as
nonviolent civil disobedience."
The danger is the legislation's vague definitions of violent
radicalization and homegrown terrorism and the commission's
power to label individuals and groups as possible terrorists.
Violent radicalization, for example, is defined as "the
process of adopting or promoting an extremist belief system
for the purpose of facilitating ideologically based violence
to advance political, religious, or social change." Note that
you don't actually have to commit violence to be labeled a
violent radical. You just have to adopt or promote a belief
system that differs with the government, which is easy enough
in these times of economic instability, expansive government
powers and endless wars.
The definition for homegrown terrorism is equally vague: "the
use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by
a group or individual born [or] raised...within the United
States...to intimidate or coerce the United States, the
civilian population...or any segment thereof."
Would abortion protesters or anti-war organizers be accused
of using "force" to "intimidate or coerce" others? What about
people who promote immigration views that are considered
"extremist"? By Congress failing to define what an "extremist
belief" is, what would constitute "ideologically based
violence" or the use of "force," it could mean anyone who
expresses a belief contrary to that held by the occupants of
the White House.
The concern, as Lee points out, is that the law will be used
"against U.S.-based groups engaged in legal but unpopular
political activism, ranging from political Islamists to
animal-rights and environmental campaigners to radical
right-wing organizations. There is concern, too, that the
bill will undermine academic integrity and is the latest
salvo in a decade-long government grab for power at the
expense of civil liberties."
The Senate version of this legislation, which finds that
domestic threats "cannot easily be prevented through
traditional Federal intelligence or law enforcement efforts,"
requires the creation of what would essentially join federal
agents and local police together in a single paramilitary
entity.
"This sounds like part of the same continuum we've
experienced in the last seven years, which is the effort to
deputize local law enforcement to work with the FBI and
national agencies without local accountability, as we have
seen with the establishment of joint-terrorism task forces
across the country," said Hope Marston of the Bill of Rights
Defense Committee. "When you talk about working with local
law enforcement to possibly spy on groups and individuals to
try to find the so-called 'needle in the haystack,' this
definitely poses a threat to local autonomy."
To Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United
States, H.R. 1955, as it is referred to, is just one more in
a long series of laws passed in times of foreign policy
tensions. He points out that the Alien and Sedition Acts of
1798, for instance, sent people to jail for criticizing the
Adams administration. And "During World War I, the Espionage
Act and Sedition Act sent close to a thousand people to jail
for speaking out against the war. On the eve of World War II,
the Smith Act was passed, harmless enough title, but it
enabled the jailing of radicals -- first Trotskyists during
the war and Communist party leaders after the war, for
organizing literature, etc., interpreted as conspiring to
overthrow the government by force and violence."
The true targets of this bill may be the anti-globalists and
radical environmentalists who pose a threat to the corporate
powers. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), the congresswoman who
introduced the bill, has enjoyed a long and productive
relationship with the RAND Corporation, a California-based
think tank with close ties to the
military-industrial-intelligence complex.
"Trends in Terrorism," a 2005 study by RAND, contains a
chapter titled "Homegrown Terrorist Threats to the United
States." In that study, RAND maintains that "homegrown
terrorism" will come from anti-globalists and radical
environmentalists who "challenge the intrinsic qualities of
capitalism." RAND also claims that anti-globalists and
radical environmentalists "exist in much the same operational
environment as

This couldn't be easier - PLEASE cut and paste together your own letter with
these facts and cross post! If you don't live in FL, then you have seen the
poor dogs on your vacations, which will END (boycott) if this doesn't stop! (
or you visited your retired relatives there..etc..) Remind them that
unsocialized dogs that are chained 24/7 are victims, unable to flee, or they
fight, which could mean biting a child that wonders too close!

Chained dogs bake outside in the intense tropical heat and sun of Miami-Dade
County. Imagine how painful it is for a dog when a scorching hot metal chain
touches his paws, nose or genitals. Chained dogs are also subject to tropical
storm and hurricane force winds. On Jan. 22, 2008, the Miami-Dade County
Commission rejected a tethering ordinance that would have established humane
conditions for tethering. The ordinance would have required people to be
outside when their dogs are chained. Please help the chained dogs of
Miami-Dade County by writing to the commissioners of Miami-Dade County.

Sample letter (Please personalize the letter. If you're boycotting travel to
Miami, please say so.)

Dear County Commissioners:

Miami wants to be known as a glamorous and fun tourist destination. A dog
suffering on a chain in the hot tropical sun tarnishes this image. Please
approve the tethering ordinance that was proposed Miami-Dade Animal Services,
which would have imposed humane conditions for tethering, including requiring
people to be outside when their dog is chained. I am shocked that in spite of
all the evidence that demonstrates why chaining is cruel and inhumane, often
making "vicious monsters" out of otherwise gentle and social animals,
Miami-Dade County Commissioners refused to act on this important legislation,
which would have restricted this cruel and archaic practice.

Dogs are social animals who instinctively want to be part of a group or pack.
Leaving dogs chained outside makes them aggressive. The Center for Disease
Control reported that chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to bite. Dogs who
are forced to live at the end of a chain are at risk from the elements:
blistering heat, windstorms, rain and lightning. They are also vulnerable to
attacks by other animals.

Numerous jurisdictions have enacted tethering ban ordinances because studies
show that to do so is not only humane, but it also ultimately protects both
dogs and people. I urge you to act at once to enact this ordinance that will
improve the lives of so many neglected and abused animals.

Sincerely,

 Hi Kerri,

This is an old article I cam across in the Houston Press while searching
for something else. It is old, so I don't know if it should receive any
attention or what kind attention, but I thought you may be interested in
having this "article," if you don't already have it, maybe for some sort
of archive on the topic. I hope no one was inspired by this unfunny,
"provocative" piece.

Canine Cuisine
Pound-for-hound, some of the best doggone dishes around
By Robb Walsh
Published: February 3, 2005

Adventurous American eaters who scarf down durian, pig's intestines, and
stinky tofu may feel admirably multicultural. But what about dog? The
Korean dish poshingtan, which literally translated, means "body
preservation stew," is considered a health food in Seoul. Dog has been on
the menu in Korea for hundreds of years.

But in 2002, when international soccer teams visited Korea during the
World Cup competition, Korean poshingtan restaurants and dog meat salesmen
got a lot of heat from ill-mannered and culturally insensitive animal
rights activists.

Ahn Yong-keun, a South Korean food-science professor, responded to Western
critics. "I am sure that Westerners will like dog meat if they eat it," he
told reporters. "It is tasty and healthy." Ahn Yong-keun's defense of his
country's ancient canine cuisine failed to convert the foreign press who
dubbed him "Dr. Dogmeat."

Part of dog meat's PR problem may be rooted in the Korean cooking style.
Big hunks of bone with meat cooked in a soup have never appealed much to
Westerners, whether the meat in question is dog or chicken. So in the
interest of giving dog meat a fair shake, we have developed some recipes
for dog dishes we think the average Houstonian will be sure to love:

Chihuahua Chalupas

Low-fat Chihuahua meat combines beautifully with the sweetness of
caramelized onions on these crunchy canine chalupas!

1 onion, thinly sliced
1/2 pound Chihuahua meat
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup refried beans
4 chalupa shells
1/3 cup salsa
4 tablespoons crumbled queso fresco
4 cilantro sprigs

Preheat the oven to 375. Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a medium
size skillet over medium heat. Cook the onions for 12 to 15 minutes or
until they turn nicely brown. Cut the Chihuahua meat across the grain into
very thin slices. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium size skillet
over high heat. Add the meat and cook for 1 1/2 minutes on each side.
Remove the meat from the pan.

To assemble the chalupas, spread 1/4 of the beans onto each chalupa shell,
put 1/4 of the onion mixture on top of the beans, then add 1/4 of the
cooked Chihuahua. Spoon 1/4 of salsa over the meat and top with 1
tablespoon queso fresco. Place the chalupas in a warm oven until the
cheese melts, about 3 minutes. Remove from the oven and garnish with a
cilantro sprig and more sauce. Yields 4 chalupas.

Springer Spaniel Spring Rolls

Looking for a tasty alternative to greasy pork in your spring rolls? Try
ground springer spaniel. It's inexpensive, and nearly fat free!

1 pound ground springer spaniel
1 cup shredded cabbage
1/4 cup shredded carrots
3 green onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger root
3 teaspoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon chile sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
12 (7-inch square) spring roll wrappers

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Heat the oil in a medium skillet. Cook
the ground spaniel meat until evenly brown. In a medium bowl, mix together
spaniel meat, cabbage, carrots, green onions, cilantro, sesame oil, oyster
sauce, ginger, garlic and chile sauce.

Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl.

Place approximately 1 tablespoon of the spaniel mixture in the center of
each spring roll wrapper. Roll the wrappers around the mixture, folding
edges inward to close. Moisten fingers in the cornstarch and water
mixture, and brush wrapper seams to seal.

Arrange spring rolls in a single layer on a medium baking sheet. Brush
with vegetable oil. Bake in the preheated oven 20 minutes, until hot and
lightly browned.

German Shepherd Goulash

Hearty, flavorful, German Shepherd meat is just right for Hungarian
goulash. Be sure to use the best quality paprika for the richest flavor!

2 pounds German Shepherd, cut into one-inch chunks
1 teaspoon salt
2 onions
2 tablespoons lard or shortening
2 tablespoons Hungarian paprika
2 bay leaves
4 peeled and diced potatoes
1 teaspoon black pepper

Chop the onions and brown them in the shortening. Add the meat and
paprika. Let the Shepherd meat simmer in its own juices along with bay
leaves and paprika for one hour on low heat. Then add water, diced
potatoes and salt. Cover and simmer until potatoes are done and meat is
tender. Serves 4 to 6.

All-vegans-unite Tell Rain to Ditch Fur!

2008-02-03 Thread Kerri Milam
http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/asia_pacific_rain

Tell Rain to Ditch Fur! Popular Korean singer Rain has been spotted
wearing fur. Please join PETA Asia-Pacific in telling him to do the
compassionate thing and pledge not to wear fur.
Animals trapped in the wild for their fur may suffer for days before dying
from blood loss, infection, exposure, or attacks by predators. Some, especially
mothers with babies to feed, chew off their own limbs in a desperate attempt to
escape. Trapped animals are bludgeoned, drowned, or stomped to death. On fur
farms, animals spend their lives pacing in tiny, filthy wire cages, where they
often go insane before being gassed or anally electrocuted or having their
necks broken. These methods don't always stun the animals, who often "wake up"
while they are being skinned.
Many entertainers and designers, including Karen Mok, Sir Paul McCartney,
Stella McCartney, Maggie Q, Charlize Theron, and Mariah Carey, have already
shunned fur.
Please write to Rain and let him know that every time he throws down his
credit card to purchase fur, he is not only directly responsible for the deaths
of dozens of animals but also sending a message that animals' lives are less
important than fashion. Please ask Rain to do the decent and compassionate
thing and stop wearing fur.

I am writing to express my concern over sightings of you in fur. More and
more people are realizing the inherent cruelty of the fur industry, and I hope
that you will too. A recent investigation of fur farms in China exposed
horrific cruelty. The investigators videotaped workers who were swinging
raccoon dogs and foxes by their hind legs and slamming their heads to the
ground - breaking the animals' necks or backs but leaving them panting,
blinking, and conscious as they are skinned alive. Many animals raised for fur
are killed by anal or vaginal electrocution, gassing, or suffocation. Please
stop promoting the suffering and deaths of animals and stop wearing fur
immediately. As a role model for many people, you have the duty to set an
example of compassion and kindness. Respectfully yours,

ducks and geese who are force-fed on a daily basis. For foie gras, tubes are
crammed down birds’ throats, and up to 4 pounds of grain and fat are pumped
into their stomachs – until their livers become painfully diseased and enlarged
and, in some cases, their organs rupture.
