Hi , Details on our submissiont to ADC2: App Name: Speedlimits Category: Games: Casual/Puzzle Developer:James Pruett Website: http://www.wikispeedia.org http://code.google.com/p/speedlimit/ Description: A game to use while driving. It yells at the driver if he/ she speeds. We hope this gives the game enough cred to not get banned outright. It links to http://www.wikispeedia.org for the speedlimits and also allows the user to add ones along his daily routes. I am going to stay exclusively on Android for this type speed-app and I have offshoot apps/plans for this genre [if you want to help, contact me]. Most of all, I want to beat my counterpart who thinks hes all- that, developing on the iPhone. ( http://asafedrive.com/ ) IMHO, Android is optimal for driving games with an edge like this one. Bugs: I didn't get kph in it, so its very crippled. Experience: This is my first app. My suggestion to newbies is, don't do it on a laptop. Find instead a huge monitor for development. Otherwise you will be moving the Android-emulator millions of times per day. It took me two months from start to finish. I would like to see more example code, very simple ones like translate which I based this game on. Feedback: If you tell me what you think of the game, I will put your name on the frontpage of wikispeedia.org under thanks. You will be famous... Lifestyle category - Softwhere It's an application that downloads a map and directory for a venue you're visiting, such as a shopping mall. Some of the highlights are: - Search the directory - See events and promotions for points of interest - Filter stores on the map for specific categories - See your current location on the map (if it can get an accurate GPS signal) - View a list of stores, or a categorized listing - Get an extremely up-to-date map, instead of outdated paper maps - Can be applied to many venues, such as shopping malls, stadiums, airports, college campuses, etc. I found out about the contest a month before the deadline, so it was a mad rush to get everything done. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Product Name: *You’re Invited* Description: Invitation Manager Category: Productivity/Tools URL: www.bytedroid.com/youareinvited I created this app to remember the Invitations I received. I used to forget the date and time of the event often, so I missed many. I thought I will create an app which stores invitation information and gives some Periodic alerts as well as Location alerts. Location alerts popup when I happen to be near the venue of event. For this I store the event location’s Geo Information like Longitude and Latitude. And I made all this in *You’re Invited*. It was a challenge this being my first Android application and I am glad I finished it on time, at least the first version. I have already thought of a few things to put in next version. *You’re Invited* is full with features and yet is simple to use. Invitations you receive will automatically go in Upcoming Invitations or Missed Invitations category depending on event date and current date. With *You’re Invited* you are no more missing events by chance, you can always do so by choice. You can put an Upcoming Invitations in Not Interested category. There will be no Location or Periodic alerts for Not Interested, Missed and Attended events. If you have already attended an invitation which has gone to missed category being of previous date, you can shift it to Attended category. All these categories are shown in different tabs in App. You can create a new invitation using template provided. If you quickly want to fix an official meeting simply select the Invitation type as Meeting, select the invitees contact number and/or email id from the contacts or type in yourself. SMS will be sent to the numbers and mail will be sent to the ids. Write the message, date Time and venue and send it. If you want Location Alert, Geo Tag the venue. In case of a not so quick invite like that of a birthday or wedding, you can put in your own creative messages. You can put in R.S.V.P. as well. There is a limit on characters if you send SMS but no limit if you are sending a mail. In case you want to review it later before sending save it in draft and send from draft later. You can keep all your invitations in one place using *You’re Invited* using Add Invitation option. Put in the details of invitation received from other sources like email or Invitation card in Add and you will start getting alerts and other advantages like any invitation from *You’re Invited*. You will get to know of Upcoming invitations through notifications. Location and periodic Alerts, GUI display options, mode of sending invitation – mail or SMS, cleaning up of Invitation list are all configurable through the Settings option. You can customize the App the way you want. I have given a one touch option to quickly see today’s and tomorrow’s events. When you are looking at the geo location in Map or satellite view al the details of event is visible at the location point itself. You do not have to switch views to get the details. You can see the route from your current location to venue. I have also added some FAQs in case of help required in usage of which the chances are less. I am planning to put a couple of more things in next version: 1. Template messages according to the invitation type 2. Removing SMS size Limit 3. Animated invitation cards 4. Automatic date setting of events like Christmas, New year *You’re Invited* will soon be available in the market for free. Any feedback from you will be appreciated. Thanks, -Somasekhar On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 1:49 PM, bidibidi pstalew...@poczta.fm wrote: I'm sending this post just to let You know that our Cartoon Gang application v1.0 is now available for free in Android Market (Social category). [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Ooops... I am late, probably too late. Anyway, I’d like to talk about Seawasp, my ADC2 contribution. It’s an old-school action/arcade game. One of the main goals was to create a fun arcade atmosphere and gameplay, like the atmosphere and gameplay from the old commodore c64/amiga games. I leave it to you to judge how well we've met our goal, but let me just tell you that both, Ursula Schwab (GFX) and Chris Huelsbeck (Sound and SFX) are not just professional and famous artists, they are also highly skilled and fun to work with! It's just the programmer (well, that's me) who marches to a different drum, but I bet most people will never notice that Seawasp was developed by a waiter who stumbled about the android SDK by luck. :) But back to Seawasp, it took 4 months to develop it plus two additional weeks of vacation from my regular job, which also supplied the capital to hire a professional team. Seawasp was contributed to ADC2 just by luck, because it fitted into the time frame. There are countless hours of work, a few thousand dollars and many sleepless nights in Seawasp. I really hope you like it! Thanks for your time, Michael. By the way, take a look at www.honeymilklabs.com for more details about Seawasp. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Last and least, me. App: GooMemo Category: Productivity LOC: 7658 http://goomemo.com My story: I'm an active note taker, writing notes on my phone on the road. When I got my hands on the G1, I knew I had to develop my own notes app. This was in the beginning of 2009. I learned the Android framework and designed the app further at my own pace. Then ADC2 was announced and I knew I that I should participate. ADC2 set the deadline for my work. I worked harder and harder as the deadline approached, but still, the usual happened: there was huge amount of work to be done during the last weeks. I worked multiple days until midnight, on my free time. Last days were a struggle with less sleep. In the end, I managed to publish a decent app. I'm afraid some bugs slipped through though. After the deadline, I had a break for over a week. Didn't want any of Android, I was exhausted. What was the most time consuming task for me? It was implementing the 2-way GDocs synchronization feature. Nothing to do with Android actually. I had to learn the GDocs protocol and develop a light-weight communication library that could run on Android; the existing GDocs Java lib does not run on Android. Sure there were fights with Android too, every framework has its issues. Last week I returned back to my app and released a free version of it. (I intend to publish a commercial version later, if possible.) Also put up the web site with screenshots. Anyway, GooMemo is now out there for free. If you are looking for a notes app, go check it. If you are not satisfied, please let me know. Hi JP, Yes you are probably right, the sensors in modern Smartphones are really to inaccurate and liable to interference in vehicles which is a pity. I wrote Green Driving Gauge. It provides feedback for how fuel efficient your driving is in order to help you improve. Saving gas not only saves money for you personally, it creates less pollution, and uses less of the planet's resources. In GPS mode it tracks acceleration rate, breaking frequency, and speed. Large colorful gauges fill up with flowers the better you do. Soothing reminder sounds like streams and wind play if you aren't doing so well. Screenshot: http://nanek.name/images/green_driving_gauge_screenshot.png ADC2 was fun and educational, I guess. My ADC1 entry was a multiplayer GPS war game with neon green spinning skull progress indicators, and animated flames and stick figures running around on a map. I was aiming for something more pleasant and appealing this year. I feel like I expanded my range a little bit, at least. Given the advice I see in the group, maybe I'll take a crack at simplifying the UI next version. As with most other devs, we have made significant improvements since the deadline; ultimately though, the app still works as intended. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. A bit late I know, but here's the website for my app, mobilematics: http://mobilematics.co.uk/ On Sep 9, 6:59 am, broc.seib broc.s...@gmail.com wrote: For ADC2 I created BabelSnap! for the Travel category. Augmented Traffic Views was submitted to the ADC-2, and was already dubbed could be the coolest AR app we've seen yet :) http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/08/26/augmented-traffic-views-for-android-could-be-the-coolest-ar-app-weve-seen-yet/ Seriously, due to the voting rules, I believe my app is at an inherent disadvantage as to properly evaluate it, one needs to want to drive (using the app) and be in a city supported by the app. Hence getting past Round 1 would be quite a pleasant surprise for me. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Some very, very nice apps in this thread! (And good to see we weren't the only ones with sleepless nights...) Our app is called Inserty and is basiaclly an advanced text template tool, which lets you create templates that contain dynamic text - like your current street address or a link to google maps showing your current location. The text can be copied to the clipboard or inserted into a new email, sms, twitter message etc. Screenshots can be found at http://roomfour0four.com and you can find the app in the android market by searching for Inserty. We (Max and I, we met at university) started out tinkering with android because we thought the API is designed really well, and the toolchain is a pleasure to work with (both of us coming from an embedded-c background). A random idea quickly turned into a concept, and after 2 weeks of coding we managed to meet the ADC2 deadline, just in time. Our main difficulties encountered were making the app robust and efficient, as not all finesses of the API were known to us, or documented extensively. This resulted in a lot of tinkering and field- testing (especially for the location services) to get the app performing well, even in unpredictable situations. Personally, I think the ADC is great for the incentive it gives developers, and the publicity it creates for cool apps that only few users would notice otherwise. Also, the community it created for developers like us was great fun. Technically, it will lower the notification volume to zero for the amount of time you set. It has is a 'quiet time' schedule and you can create a timer on the fly. The appwidget can start a new timer with two touches! * Alarmoid is designed to turn the sound off and on again without a fuss. The default settings do the job quietly, shutting off the phone ringer as well as all applications configured with a sound notification. Use Preferences to allow the phone to ring during quiet time. Preferences can also make the phone vibrate, play a sound or flash the LED when quiet time is over. You could use Alarmoid as an alarm clock or a (kitchen) timer. * After installation, Alarmoid is set up with a schedule to turn sound off automatically at 11pm and back on at 8am, 7 days a week. Touch any entry in the expandable list view under the Scheduler tab to edit or delete that entry. Rather than delete entries, you can turn off the schedule using a checkbox in the Preferences tab. Use the Menu to add additional entries to the schedule. You can have any number of Alarmoids in the schedule, organized by the days of the week. You can see the app firsthand in a five minute demo on YouTube. There is some additional information in the published Google Docs. This is one of the apps in the contest you want to try. I hope y'all like it! I submitted Graviturn for category Games: Arcade/Action ( http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.fheft.graviturn ) . It's a little game where you tilt your phone to roll balls around in order to remove some but keep others (hard to explain). It's no big deal but at least it's unique, i think. I started developing in the first week of August (not knowing about the ADC) and when I was finished and started public beta testing, I read about the competition and decided to take part - just for the fun. It's my first playable game for Android but I hope people will like it (the feedback on the market is quite positive and encouraging, like 4.3 stars), even though I don't expect any chances in the ADC. Because I didn't focus on ADC, I've coded a lot since August 31 and did huge improvements to the game, but that won't help me in the competition of course... --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Howdy. Hopefully it's not too late for this reply (fyi to any google people: my RSS reader (Akregator) stopped reading the feed from this forum). I feel more comfortable with this app up on the ADC because it had a few downloads and some feedback. By: Sheado.net http://www.Sheado.net Feedback: We started development in early July. It was sleepless nights and constants work (being that we have other things to do during the day). In the end we released the app at the last moment we could and just now we are realizing there are some bugs. It would have been nice if an update/bug fix window had been allowed - that way the app can see some real world use, which would hopefully uncover any missed critical bugs that we could repair. After all, a large factor of a successful app revolves around its maintenance and customer service experience. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
I submitted 3 applications, all of which are based on (what I hope is) a creative use of TTS. Talking Calendar (Productivity/Tools) - Talking Calendar integrates with your Android/Google calendar and reads aloud the corresponding event(s) at the specified time(s). Me and several people I know find it useful, especially in the car. TweetsAloud (Social Networking) - TweetsAloud is an application for Twitter that audibly alerts the user about new tweets and their creator, and has an option to read them aloud. It periodically checks for updates at user-defined intervals (10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes). It can read messages from friends, mentions, and direct messages. Voice Caller ID (Productivity/Tools) - Voice Caller ID integrates with Android/Google contacts and reads aloud the caller's information- name if displayed on the screen and the phone number otherwise (blocked calls are read aloud as Unknown). Creating TweetsAloud was very interesting, trying to get around the informal speech used in 140 character tweets. We ended up creating a dictionary to “inflate” common twitter terms into their regular speech equivalent. The dictionary will probably needed to be expanded in the future (I hate deadlines). I hope the voice quality of Google's TTS engine improves as time goes forward, as that has been people's main complaint. Our website is at www.pwnwithyourphone.com Good luck everyone! Hi all, I've submitted my first app ever on android. The whole process was quite fun, sleepless nights and brain buzzing with ideas.. Application name is GeoAlert under tools/productivity. It is an alarm clock based on location. Simply click on a location on the map to set it up and it would notify you when you get there. My main effort was to give it the best behavior from usability and user experience perspectives - hope I suceeded in doing so. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Just wanted to share a bit more on CowPotato I did all the gameplay, which first meant building a 3D game engine. I'm new to Java and Android, only dabbled in OpenGL, etc -- there was a bit of a learning curve. It felt like quite an achievment to have spinning triangles on screen after only a month :) The basic timeline -- focused on the gameplay part, not the menus, scoring, etc: May 27-29 -- met Chris F at Google I/O, he pitched the game idea to me June 22 -- Spinning triangles representing what eventually would be cows July 27 -- cow model, aiming with the finger, potato trajectory physics Aug 15 -- Hit detection, scoring, aiming with trackball Aug 24 -- Beta release to market Aug 27 -- Cows fight back Aug 31 -- ADC2 release Getting smooth performance is tricky, of course. In the end I think we were getting 26-30fps pretty consistently. I spent a lot of time creating an efficient engine, but there are still noticeable hiccups at times -- something we'll probably always have to deal with. A lot of effort went into gameplay trade-offs that make it bearable if we can't maintain a consistent framerate. That's the thing about game / mobile development especially: huge constraints, making trade-offs and architectural choices that would be unconscionable in other situations. Overall I enjoyed working with the Android platform. The tools are good (and cross-platform, very nice), pretty good reference docs and sample apps. I'm looking forward to using what I've learned (and hopefully the engine I developed) to get some more games into the market in the near future. Hi all, Here is my very tiny (but hopefully useful) app - Name: WebReader Category: Productivity Developer: just me Website: http://webreader.vamsee.in I literally had just one week to develop and submit an app, so I racked my brains as to what I can do that will be simple and easy to develop as well as being actually useful to people. Ergo, a dead-simple app that adds a javascript bookmarklet that cleans up webpages (you can't add bookmarklets from the default browser as of now). I have trouble scrolling the webpages up, down and sideways all the time when I'm reading something, so I hope this helps others who are annoyed by the same issue. I had to rename it into 'EzWebReader' (apart from changing the package name) before submitting to the regular Market. You can search for 'webreader' in the market and find it anyways. Please check it out, I'd love to see any feedback you might have. The app will be free and the code is open source, will put up the link to the repo on the site soon. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
I'd not planned to enter at all, but when I saw a tweet announcing that the challenge was open for submissions, I felt embarrassed that I was sitting on three mostly complete, but still unfinished applications - it's a silly situation to be in; and I knew that I'd regret not entering, so I picked the smallest app and raced to finish it. I'm glad I changed my mind too, it makes the challenge more interesting than merely observing it from the touchline. I'm not upbeat about my chances of doing well largely because the app wasn't designed with around the idea of mass appeal which may be a prerequisite for doing well in this competition. Tom. 2009/9/4 gjs garyjamessi...@gmail.com Hi Tom, Thought you were going to skip ADC2, glad you changed your mind ! Good luck with Daisy Garden. I submitted geoPaste in the Media category. geoPaste is an AR publishing app, see http://www.geopaste.com for details. I spent about 3 to 4 months developing testing it, including about 1 month full time. I was also lucky enough to do a short presentation on geoPaste at the inaugural Sydney GTUG (Google Technology User Group) at Google Sydney HQ about 2 hours after ADC2 had closed. The presentation seemed to be fairly well received. I only decided to enter a few days after they announced that the ADC was open for submissions to enter, so it was a rush. My most stressed moment was when, with about 4 hrs to the deadline, none of the Moseycodes would scan. It's very complex code and delicate to debug under normal circumstances and I was so bleary by that time that it took me 30 minutes to realize I'd simply smeared butter from my toast onto the camera lens. For various of reasons I'm predicting there will be far fewer entrants this time round - and I'll probably look stupid when they announce a record number of entrants. I'm also predicting that Daisy Garden's best chance of progressing to the second round is that fewer than 20 apps were submitted under the Entertainment category. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Hi, here is my app: -Name: MyPages -Category: Productivity/Tools -Description: Use your phone as a Post-it, remember pages for your books and Google Books, add notes, one-touch GoTo a particular page for Google Books, customizable sorting and filtering and more. Never have page creases or scribbles in your books again! Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75lR4zLy_LQ -The Idea . . . I got the idea for MyPages during my daily subway commute to New York City when I noticed a lot of people reading books (for work/school/ leisure). Very few had actual bookmarks while the majority made page creases or used subway tickets or other pieces of paper to remember pages in their books. -The App Goal . . . I desgined MyPages with the main goal of providing a Post-it functionality where users keep track of pages for books they are reading as well as adding notes. Moreover, I figured that it would be a perfect fit to augment Google Books with the same Post-it functionality and allow an on-the-go reference to pages in users' Google Books library. With MyPages, I also wanted to showcase the flexibility that Android provides for building great UI. To this end, I spent a lot of time creating my own graphics to skin MyPages from the ground up. The Coding . . . Thanks to well documented Android API and Google Data API, developing MyPages was an enriching and great experience. My main concern was indeed finding the time to code since I work full-time and also doing my Masters in CS part-time. One of my ADC2 submissions under Tools is called *Xeeku Search*. It's an universal search portal for both context and location based searches. The unique feature is that it presents search result in native format. For example, photos are presented with a nice gallery while locations are marked as map pins. It's really excels on the GUI and streamlined interface which meat to rival iPhone's user experience from the ground up. As for iPhone, I was one of the people paid $600 for the first generation and still using it. Among many things I liked, one thing bug me to death is there is only one button and the back button is all over the places from app to app. I believe the single button design to be more gimmick than substance, which gave me the very motivation and ideas of our current GUI design. It takes the full advantages of Android's physical buttons. I know it's a tall order (rival iPhone's user experience) but check it out and see yourself. It's on Android Market now and it's free. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
I submitted SayMyName. It reads the name of the caller aloud, so you don´t have to look at your phone´s display. It´s very useful if you can´t see your phone at the moment, but want to know who´s calling. Also perfect for using your phone eyes-free (e.g. for blind people). Website: http://code.google.com/p/roadtoadc/ I think I will add a video later! The official market-descrition: -- Want to know who´s calling? This app will tell you! The app reads the name saved in your adressbook and tells you who´s calling Please send me your ideas and feedback :) **You will be prompted to install TTS** -- The description of the ADC-Version (called SayMyName ADC) is different, but i can´t see it because of the deadline ;) I code on Android for 3 months and I like it very much :) Hopefully there will be an ADC3 next year! App-History: The first versions ( 2.0 ) were very rough and bad. I got a lot of bad comments and votings for that. It was because of a bad number- identification and no checking for installed TTS (Text-to-Speech- Library is needed to use this app). Unfortunately there is a bug. If another app uses TTS, SayMyName will not work until the whole application gets restarted (reboot phone or kill my app using a task-manager). If my app is good enough to reach the second round, i will fix this bug and add new features, like the option to use your own voice, instead of the robo-voice. I don´t think i win a price at ADC2, but i hope i get a lot of feedback and new ideas. App: Aah - share your world. Description: A dynamic panoramic view right on map. A streetview substitute for places inaccessible by road or not shot by google. (User generated content). Site: www.tammiz.com (not ready yet) Unfortunately we landed in an mess after integration as some of our team members are in a different continent using just an emulator. While the camera worked with emulator (+webcam), it fails on hardware : ( Hope to submit a corrected version tested thoroughly on real hardware through market. Hope all our efforts aren't thrown out. We should probably not have waited for the submission site to show up before integrating. But we anyway had to add as many features as possible before submission given the learning curve and short time since announcement for fresh new ideas from starters. Those who get a chance to review, please do consider the version on the market... or update to it so that rest of the components work well with our new library. I sadly only found out about the ADC2 about 1 week before it closed and I had no Android Dev Phone nor did I have a shred of knowledge about how to code Android other than knowing Java. I come from PC/Windows Mobile and I have lots of experience there especially with low-level optimzation of code in ARM assembler. I'm also fluent with 3D math and algorithms. That said I've now got my Android SDK and a G1. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
I have submittet 4 apps for ADC 2. Hoping to get some publicity for my small company (DKIT Android / dkdroid.com) - I do not think I will win anything. My apps were all ready during August, one of them were even finished before August, but I waited until August 1st to release it in the Market (Stick And Joy) My apps are: Name: Stick And Joy Description: Take pictures with the camera, create actors/stick figures, change their colors, poses and features, and send your creation as MMS, Email attachment or to Picasa. Uploading to global picasa album StickAndJoy.com is also available. By: DKIT Android Feedback: Integration with Google Picasa / Google Login was a little tricky at first, but works wonderfully when you first understand the concepts fully. Name: Remote Controlled LED Sign Description: Android screen emulates LED Sign. Change text/scroll speed/color etc. by sending SMS to the phone. By: DKIT Android Feedback: Quick and simple application, evolution of my Led Scroller / Led Scroller 2 apps. Garbage collection is an issue, there's a lot going on in the background, so scrolling is not always smooth - but as I have no control over garbage collection or background processes (except keeping object creation at a minimum) scrolling will be jerky sometimes. Name: Splat!: Bugs II Description: Casual game, where you can splat bugs with your finger. Feedback: Evolution of the games Splat!: Bugs and Touch!: 4Kids. Same goes here, garbage collection creates problems, especially problems with large bitmaps that create out of memory errors/force closes. Name: SMS Templates Description: Small text editor for SMS/Email that expands keywords to sentences/expressions. Example: /LOL - Laughing Out Loud Feedback: I noticed too late that catching hardware keyboard keys is not the same as catching software keyboard keys. Frustrating, as I submitted the app before I noticed this fact. :-) Only thing I could do was to change the description to reflect this fact. My own mistake, so I blame noone. :-) --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. I'd say a lot of the problems with developing for the ADC are the same for regular Android/mobile development: testing! Getting devices in the hands of people that can give you valuable feedback is necessary for a successful product. Hard to do when not everyone has an Android device, but maybe that will get better soon! :) I have no idea if there will be more or less participation than ADC1. I do feel that the level of applications will be higher as people have had time to play with the SDK and develop applications. Additionally, there are professional dev firms out there submitting this time with lots of Android experience. Should make it a little tougher for the freelance and student developer. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Well not 3D but I did submit a 2D top-down shooter for ADC2. Application: FRG Category: Games - Arcade/Action Description: Overhead 2D shooter similar to Ikari Warriors and Heavy Barrel - use the trackball and touchscreen to find and destroy all enemies. 4 playable robots, 6 weapons, 12 levels, and 10 different kinds of enemies. Achievements and 3 difficulty levels to keep the game interesting and replayable. Also includes a retro soundtrack reminiscent of the 8-bit Nintendo days by Maniacs of Noise. Website: http://www.woogames.com (will have more Friday) App development thoughts: Creating an action game, I of course had the requisite performance worries - I've done OpenGL before but this is my first exposure to OpenGL ES. Laziness acquired from doing OpenGL on monstrous PCs definitely got in the way of making FRG performant from the start. I also do miss GL_QUAD! A more interesting problem was that FRG uses the touchscreen to aim and fire weapons. This sounds really cool in theory but in reality your finger is blocking almost half the screen at any given moment in the game - in a fast action game that could mean not seeing enemies and their bullets until it's too late. I think I addressed it by including an accelerometer-based camera (field of view extends in the direction of up on your phone) plus the camera shifting in the direction you are shooting while your finger touches the screen. I also have done a lot of J2ME development - I have to say I enjoy doing Android development much more - a modern API and sensible permissions/signing mechanism are much appreciated! Anybody who has had to certify J2ME applications across multiple phones will know what I'm talking about! [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Looks nice! Two problems i noticed when quickly browsing your app: Start it. Type in 'pizza' and hit the search button. The toast say Searching Search for null ... strange text. Then search using flickr or picasa or twitter. All work quite well! :) Then i did a local search: I get a force close message and Xeeku is restarted. Not so good... On Sep 3, 2:05 am, xeeku jzhang88...@gmail.com wrote: One of my ADC2 submissions under Tools is called *Xeeku Search*. Our entry is Name: What Zip? Category: Productivity/Tools By: John Coryat, USNaviguide LLC Description: This application carefully fixes your location to determine your USPS Zip Code (US Only). Displays the results as a shaded outline of the Zip Code along with your location and closest street on a map. Website: http://www.usnaviguide.com/zip.htm The app is a companion to this website. We have about 250,000 monthly visitors to the site that are mostly business professionals interested in territory management, real estate and other things. The app is on the market and has had about 1200 downloads, pretty amazing considering the small number of Android devices. ADC2 impressions: I received one of the Google ION phones at Google IO back in May. I had been working on iPhone apps but switched to Android to develop an entry for the contest. It took me from May 27th to August 5th to get this one ready and I had about 3 solid weeks of testing the app before submitting it. The members of this forum and especially Mark Murphy helped immensely. I believe the contest was designed with developers like me in mind. I hadn't considered working with Android before and when Google handed me one of those beautiful ION's, I couldn't help but dive into the system. I have no illusions that this app will do anything but entertain a few judges, it's not earth shattering or polished like the winners in ADC1, but for those that want to know what zip code they're in, our app is the absolute best tool ever created. The only alternative would be to knock on someone's door and ask them what their zip code is. I've done this to test the app and have had some very odd responses, mostly they won't answer! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
We at ART+COM Technologies submitted Hoccer in the category Tools. Hoccer allows for the transfer of data, by way of intuitive gesturing with a smartphone, eliminating the cumbersome act of manually entering addresses and phone numbers. It's an ad-hoc communication application which is heavitly integrated into the usage flow of Android. Who hasn't been in these situations? You're standing in front of a new acquaintance and want to exchange contact details, but you're phone's small on-screen keyboard prevents quick entry. You've just given talk and want to instantly share your presentation digitally with the audience without having to collect email addresses or ask your colleagues to remember an URL. A friend has snapped a photo with her phone's camera and you'd like to get a copy quickly. With Hoccer, digital files can, for example, be thrown into the audience by imitating a throwing gesture. The data are transferred onto a server and become available for download. Members of the audience interested in these data simply catch it by actively gesturing with their mobile phones. In this case, they download the presentation onto their devices and have a personal copy for later review. Communication is not limited to one-to-many interactions; data transfer can be as simple as sharing between just two people. To exchange contact details or web addresses, users tap their mobile phones simultaneously and Hoccer ensures that the communication is limited to only these two users. For more informations see our website http://www.hoccer.com, ceck out the YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqv8Q6M1O6Y and get the lates version on the Android Market. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Hi Tom, Thought you were going to skip ADC2, glad you changed your mind ! Augmented Reality. I've got a comp ed of AugmentThis! in the running. This round I didn't stress over the ADC, for a number of reasons, not the least that PURE LUCK will play a big role again. So I got the release candidate ready about a week before deadline. Of course there's always room to squeeze in new features and apply more polish. Like all dedicated devs I will remain eternally unhappy with the product, but assuming that the evaluators will not sniff out all the corners anyway, I spent the rest of the time testing, which turned out to be a good use of the remaining time. Two remarks: As -v- has found, it takes a long time to get Android dialed and is decidedly challenging, in spite of the cheerful assurances in the various videos on Android's Google Code page. It's about creating and sharing animated card. It's not like cards in web site tough, because it uses phones cappabilities like web, map, vibration, sms, email, etc. Because this is my first release, this morning i submitted it to the market hoping that people like it and can create and posting cards to make it more crowded in community. I myself posted 2 cards only, still has a lot of works to do the tutorial page in website (www.clapcard.com) It's a real fun experience to do all the stuff since this is my first app available for public ^^ I'm planning to make a puzzle like game after completing the website. [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Hi! I also submitted a little app to the android developer challenge 2. I am from Austria and we started working on our app about two and a half months ago. I did the main development one of my apartment mates did also some coding and a friend from Brazil did the artwork. It's a golf game called UrbanGolf where your phone is your golf club and your city is the golf course. It is played on a Google map and uses all the Sensors on your phone and GPS for the location and the swing. With the deadline coming closer and closer we got more an more problems. First my friend from Brazil is moving right now to Germany and was unable to complete the artwork. So we developers had to become designers and make the best of what we had. (Three days before deadline) The second bad thing that was happening was, that i found a pretty nasty bug on midnight the night before the deadline (due to my different timezone my deadline was 1th Sept, 9:00am) So i tried to fix the bug. It took me until 2:30am. I checked everything in, tested it a little and thought. Ok, lets upload it. After a little hassle with the signing (at that time i was very hungry and tired and my brain was just a bowl of soaked cornflakes) i managed to upload my app. After submitting we went out for a Kebab and a celebration beer. The next day i woke up after the submission deadline and tried some stuff on my app and discovered a big bug i must have introduced the night before! So if you end up judging UrbanGolf light _please_ ignore the fact, that if you try to find your golf ball the player-icon and the accuracy circle is painted several times on the map and not just once. Does anyone know if there is the possibility to upload a newer versions between the two judging rounds? (like it was in ADC1) Please, just ignore this bug. If we win some money we can implement all the features we had to cut out for the sake of making the deadline! Cheers, Anton Lout wrote: While you developers relax... would you mind sharing what apps to expect through this challenge.. and anything else you wish to share about ADC2 submissions... well anything including the fact: 'thank God, no more sleep less nights'! [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
We developed an augmented reality ghost-hunting fitness game: SpecTrek (out in the shop right now, we are working on a 'light' version). We finished comfortably about two weeks ago, but about 16 hours before the deadline a friend of ours called. He bought the new Samsung Galaxy (just out over here), and our app didn't work correctly on it! It turned out the current compass firmware is broken on the Galaxy. Other applications (like Google's sky map) didn't work either. Some searching on the internet revealed that the folks from Wikitude have developed a fix so we knew it could be done. We had to drive about 100 km and back to collect the galaxy from our friend so we could use it to determine what the fix could be. About 2 a.m. local time (+- 9 hours before the deadline) we finished implementing the fix, but major performance problems remained on the Galaxy. We then took a couple of hours of sleep, and started working on the performance problems again. 60 minutes before the deadline we had a version that worked fine on the Galaxy. After 30 minutes of frantic testing (both on the Galaxy and on the other two phones we have access to, the G1 and the Hero), we found no problems and resubmitted our app. Whether it was a wise decision or not to resubmit, only time can tell --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Send an SMS at 3:15 Monday, make per-app settings or locks, map camera button to a menu, launch music app on headphone insert, timelapse photos, encrypt on-the-fly, the list is endless! - Glad I didn't make a game now, seems to be a crowded category! I'm grateful to Google for organising a fun competition but was a little dissatisfied with not having enough time to develop and well- test a non-trivial application from scratch. I had some test code for the location context which vibrates the phone every time the coordinates change: forgot to take it out of course. With 5 hours to go (2am in Europe) I found my widget icons were disappearing after a few minutes for no apparent reason: it was comic at first but became less so as time wore on and I couldn't fix it (never did find it...) I started learning android about 3 months ago - initially i found it hard as it quite a different but i think i have gotten the swing of it lately and my app is coiming along - it still isn't finished (and i just found another bug last night :( - anyone know if i can post updates?) but it getting there. I am interested in building music/ video apps and controllers with android and am starting a master in signal processing in Sept where i will specialise on it. Now that i have gotten used to the API I should be able to work faster though. The last 3 week have beenquite light on sleep. My app (MyPOD - http://www.my-pod.org) is an music internet/podcast manager and player. I started building it for myself as i didnt really like the other stuff out there. It's all subjective though. I'm pretty sure there will be more submissions this time, there must be loads more people into it since the phones are out. cheers rm On Sep 1, 3:41 pm, Lout lout.r...@googlemail.com wrote: While you developers relax... would you mind sharing what apps to expect through this challenge.. and anything else you wish to share about ADC2 submissions... well anything including the fact: 'thank God, no more sleep less nights'! [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Hi, I got my app 'MicroJam' finished with 24 hours to spare but with a hugley reduced feature set to my original plan. I've been working on the app on and off in my spare time since january so I deceided to make the ADC my deadline. MicroJam is a simple loop based muic sequencer/remixer and my experience of developing the app for the challange has been mixture of happiness and pain. The main point of pain for me has been the time taken to debug anything, even trivial changes to the code have to be uploaded onto the device/emulator and then tested. This leads to a very disjointed dev workflow(but I guess this must be the same for any mobile develeopment). This problem was amplified by the fact I had lots of audio files in my app. I got around this by adding my audio to the sdcard and taking it out of the app but this then lead to big problems down the line in the eleventh hour when i tried to bring them back in again, see here http://dixonof.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/android-debuggerd-zombie/ . But on the whole I've got a great sense of calm and happiness now I got the thing submitted. I'm now gearing up for my next app which will build on the foundations i've made with MicroJam. I think i may be alone in this but I like the fact that I can't make any more changes to the app now it's submitted. I can move on and view any mods as the next version of my app which the maket users can appreciate. MicroJam will apear on the market sometime soon. I'm grateful to Google for organising a fun competition but was a little dissatisfied with not having enough time to develop and well- test a non-trivial application from scratch. It's also not possible to submit bugfixes after the deadline, and of course I'm discovering hundreds every day now... I had some test code for the location context which vibrates the phone every time the coordinates change: forgot to take it out of course. With 5 hours to go (2am in Europe) I found my widget icons were disappearing after a few minutes for no apparent reason: it was comic at first but became less so as time wore on and I couldn't fix it (never did find it...) Rud: bad luck, I was also worried about catching something in the last few weeks, would have been a nightmare! [android-developers] Re: Hmm... at last ADC2 is out of our way ... tell about your app and experience
Thanks a lot for the replies. Though many on this thread expect more (thousands of) submissions this year, only eight of you have given feedback. Would love to hear from many more out there before formally publishing anything. Of the 20 thousand developers on this group, less than 20 have replied but am sure there are hundreds if not thousands who submitted for ADC2. *Here is the interpretation so far:* Many game apps have shown up till now. Many developers are enthusiastically happy about ADC2 but seemingly the time provided was insufficient. Many would like to provide fixes to last minute bugs. *Summary of feedback to google:* Google could possibly allow one chance to update a sub-set of 'potential' apps though buggy after a few weeks; may be individually over mail or the submission site. Looks like, very few, those who almost had their apps ready around May 27th (the date of announcement) might have benifitted. Few might have managed to reuse code from their existing apps. But for new ideas, time provided is a matter of dismay. *Information shared by developers:* Game arcade/action: Galactic Guardian: Zap GPS http://sites.google.com/site/mysticlakesoftware/ Description: Use sensors to target and shoot satellites By: Rud Feedback: Happy with the ADC2 rules. But needs more time to implement better ideas. Game arcade/action: Head To Head Racing http://headtoheadracing.appspot.com/ Racing game with augmented reality features Craig Mitchel ( Liam Welford) Feedback: Smooth performance in spite of background processes was the challenge. Using ADC2 as exposure platform. Lifestyle?: TennisNow www.activitywatchservice.com Description: Share tennis court booking and other time-bound information By: Vishal and team Feedback: Android learning curve is steep. Only 30% features pushed in due to time limit. Expects more submissions than for ADC1. Category?: AugmentThis By: JP Feedback: Android is quite powerful but learning curve is steep. Social: ClapCard http://www.clapcard.com Description: creating and sharing animated card By: sleith Feedback: Fun working on Android for ADC2. Game: UrbanGolf Description: Play golf in real world with phone as the golf club By: Anton Pirker and friends. Feedback: Not enough time for a fully featured app. Would like to submit fixes. Game arcade/action: SpecTrek Description: Augmented reality ghost hunting fitness game By: Pieter Feedback: Faced specific android hardware bugs (on Samsung Galaxy) and had tough time testing. Productivity/Tools?: Tasker Description: Link any (action set) to contexts. Eg. Send SMS every x O'clock... By: Lee Feedback: Happy about ADC2 but dissatisfied with time provided. Need lot more for a tested non-trivial app. Media: MyPOD http://www.my-pod.org Description: Music internet/podcast manager and player By: SiliconEagle/rm Feedback: Steep learning curve. Insufficient time. Expects more apps on ADC2. Need to update. Media: MicroJam Description: simple loop based muic sequencer/remixer By: Simon Feedback: Reduced feature set (working spare time on it since Jan '09). Happy on the whole though debugging was painful. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Got another from Chris over mail Productivity/Tools: MyMarket http:mymarket.cc Description: MyMarket is a customizable overlay for the Android market with many features By: Chris and team Feedback: Detailed in his mail below: On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 11:40 AM, Christian Hager wrote: Hi, I've written the post again, but it's not showing up. I send it to you below: - Chris I gave it a shot with MyMarket [1][2], a customizable overlay for the Android market, where users can bookmark, recommend, remove and filter as well as preview apps and games. I was thinking about the ADC2 since spring, waiting for a good enough idea to come up (and if at all). Four weeks ago my flatmate and I were talking about the Android market, and how boring it usually is to browse the apps and games listings (mainly because the popularity listings doesn't change a lot, and the by date listings are spammed by low-quality apps). We figured it would be a real improvement if users could simply remove items they don't want to see in the list anymore. We started working on the project and released the first version on 8. of August, followed by a ton of user feedback and great ideas which we had never thought about in first place. The next weeks have been a constant cycle of iterations, considering each and every feedback we received (we don't know what's best -- our users do!). Because of all those supporters we were able to integrate many new and anticipated features such as recommendations, my downloads with updates, quick filtering, etc. and have fixed a wide range of bugs which were detected in the first weeks. The last days we worked towards version 1.0, which we got finished a day before the ADC2 submission deadline. We released it on the Android market again and asked many users which sent us feedback previously for a quick test. We were able to fix 2 important bugs, and by now we are quite confident that MyMarket works as expected. We never could have come this far without all the help from our users -- credits go to them for thinking of many of the implemented ideas in first place! The last hours before the deadline we luckily had enough time to add one more (great) feature: displaying the number of user-votes in the recommendations. As most developers at this point we have been quite tired (no sleepless nights though) and hope not to have introduced no new bugs :P. I think our project works quite well -- we haven't received any feedback about new problems since we pushed the same version to the normal Android market. The ADC2 really pushed us to try to deliver a high-quality application, which works with all oddities (eg. screen rotations on the G1, etc.). We also asked the designers at glyfx to enhance our 2d icon to a 3d version, according to the (not really trivial) Android Icon Design Guidelines (great company btw.). It was a fun thought knowing that hundreds (if not thousands) of other teams were simultaneously working on their ADC-projects during the last days with the same pace as we did. Good luck to all the teams which submitted an entry! - Chris [1] http://mymarket.cc [2] http://www.4feets.com/2009/09/mymarket-v10-submitted-to-the-adc2 --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Just to make your job easy, I am using the same format you have used. LifeStyle: NetDroid Description: Revolutionary motion-sensing browser with which you can scroll webpages by just tilting the phone.
