Thank you.
That's in too now, as I have to make another release candidate for other

I'm planning to code freeze on 5th April, so I would like updated translations
by then. If you've questions about the new strings, there aren't that many of
them, please ask here.

It is possible I will need to do more than one release candidate, in which case
I'll include translations available later too, but 5th April is for being sure
of being in the 3.0.1.

Thank you for your work on translating.

If sometime you send a list of phrases that are too technical and/or too
out of their context, I can add comments that will then appear in the .po
file that may help. Those comments/explanations will then help all
translators. Thanks for alerting me to the problem.

Welcome Quentin,

You've just missed the closing of translation for 3.0.1 (well, there are a
few more hours left), so anything you do will be for a later release. I'm
hoping the next release after 3.0.1 will also be quite soon, a few months
after it comes out. But hoping it will be doesn't mean it necessarily will
be. Welcome all the same.

Re: [Audacity-translation] Finish with Slovak translation

2021-04-04 Thread James Crook
Transifex is entirely optional.

In fact, I do not look at translations there. People who prepare them
there need to send the .po files here.
(I sometimes look at GitHub, but prefer .po files here)

Discussions of translation can be coordinated here, and then details taken
off list.
Pavel Fric is long term contributor of Czech translation, so he controls it.

Perhaps you can talk with Jozef Matta about the Slovak translation, and
between you work out how to proceed? You've not translated the sk.po file
before for us, have you? Jozef translated it in April 2020 and since.

Re: [Audacity-translation] More languages received and in.

2021-04-01 Thread James Crook
You find out by asking here.

Antonio Paniagua Navarro did an update to the Spanish translation 17th Feb
2021, so I'm hoping for an update from him for 3.0.1 in due course.

I/we/Audacity require that everyone who is preparing a translation
communicates via this list. That helps avoid two people translating the
same file. It also gives a route for sorting out disagreement about
details of translation (when more than one translator is involved on
the same file).

I do prefer to take translations (.po files) via this list, but will
occasionally take them from GitHub too - from translators who have
translated for us in the past.

Re: [Audacity-translation] Transifex

2021-02-15 Thread James Crook
Coordination is done on this email translation list.
If three different translators submit via this list, by GitHub and by
Transifex, it needs to be sorted out here.

Generally the translator who has been here on this email list for longest
makes the decisions.
They would have to be being extremely rude to a new contributor, or
unwilling to comment on the validity of alternative translations for an
Audacity developer to step in and adjudicate.

[Audacity-translation] Services such as GitHub, Transifex, Bablic, SDL Cloud, PhraseApp, WebTranslateIt

2021-02-13 Thread James Crook
Martin Srebotnjak asked:

Why cannot the file be automatically pulled from Transifex? I am attaching
> the "for use" po file, I hope that is correct.

The quick answer is 'we decided not to'.

Use of Transifex is optional. Translators can use any platform that they
like. We coordinate translation though through this email list. A
translator who does not use and submit via this list may be wasting their
time.

A particular problem arises when two translators, e.g. for Catalan or
Slovakian both translate Audacity. I do not know Catalan or Slovakian, and
can only guess at how to resolve the differences. In the end the
translators need to talk with each other and sort it out between them.

What do I do if I get a .po file here and a pull request for the same file
on GitHub? Or a 100% complete status on Transifex? The .po file here wins.

If a translator has a question about a translation string it is best if it
comes here. It may affect other languages too.

So, Martin, we decided not to upload direct from Transifex.

Thank you. I shall pass the comments about the broken update on to the

Thank you Olivier!

I made a mistake in committing a wrong fr.po and will commit this correct
one tomorrow to fix it.
It was an oversight. I had read the discussion, seen what to do, but forgot
that when I was making some updates! My mistake.

That's neat.

I'm hoping the need does not arise and that the Breton translator is

Yes. The translation would appear incorrectly as 100% complete.

So all in all it's probably a bad idea for our hypothetical Breton

would allow it, if they told me that in their professional opinion as a

Re: [Audacity-translation] Audacity-translation in Breton

2020-11-04 Thread James Crook
What Thomas says.

If we have a translator translating Breton, and that translator really
really wants to use French for the untranslated items, and puts those
translations in, I'd accept that. I'd assume they know what they are
doing.

If Dutch had been neglected for a while and a new translator came along and
put German translations in for all the missing items, I'd say "NO", (after
asking around my Dutch friends first, just to make sure he/she really was
trolling me). I'd then tell him/her to go and troll a different project.

Re: [Audacity-translation] New translation for Audacity (exported from Transifex): Breton

2020-11-02 Thread James Crook
I've added the four new (inactive) translations into the inactive folder.

The criterion for adding a new translation to active source is 80%+
translated.
Demotion to inactive may happen if less than 50% is translated.

I've not added the transifex be,km,lt or oc to inactive (or elsewhere).
They already have partial translations in audacity source. Those transifex
alternatives to what we have will be lost. If we get a new translator for
those languages they can start from the versions which were actually
submitted to Audacity by translators in the past.

If someone disagrees with that policy of just ignoring those four partial
translations, the solution is to 'become the translator' for that language
for 3.0.0, and after string freeze, submit the po file here.

Thomas, thanks for your work on this, and sending me the files.

At the moment there is no volunteer Breton translator.
If one surfaces, it is for them to decide whether they will do that.

(percentage complete will depend on percentage of items translated into

Re: [Audacity-translation] Transifex project for Audacity - cleanup update!

To add to that

During development wording of the same text may change several times.
This happens particularly for error messages.
So if you are translating the '(development)' version, you may find that
annoying.

Re: [Audacity-translation] New translation for Audacity (exported from Transifex): Breton

2020-11-01 Thread James Crook
Even a 57% translation is not really usable. It will drop back into
English in the places where translation is most needed!

   - With no team/translator behind it, we additionally can't ask for fixes
   to problems.
   - A new translator has to check all the existing translations anyway.
The extent that '57% translated' helps them is much much less than it
seems. My partner has worked as a translator, and does not like jobs where
she is asked to correct someone else's translations.

I'm thinking we shouldn't add Breton to the languages for Audacity
(likewise others abandoned translations).

Audacity does not have to rewrite the entire file with each change.
Inside the file are 'pages' and Audacity only needs to update pages which
change.

> And how will be managed FS file size limitations?

The disk filling up is already a problem with 'pile of files'.

We expect to be better off when the FS 'says no' than we were before, and
to only lose the most recent changes that wouldn't fit. And to properly
alert the user to disk full.

We are planning to have a space-meter for 3.0.1, as the disk filling up has
been a long standing problem. For 3.0.0 you will just get some warnings
when disk space is low, and Audacity will tell you when it can't write any
more.

As to actual file size, the max file size on Windows-10/NTFS is 256
Terabytes, which should be enough.

> Will there be the choice in the preferences to stay with the the old way?
>

No. We want to remove the problem of recordings getting broken by the
pile-of-file approach, so keeping it would be counter productive.

If you've more questions, please ask on the forum or on the development
email list, as this email list is for translations.

[Audacity-translation] Tools and .po files.

2020-10-15 Thread James Crook
There is a certain kind of anarchy at work in translation, and from my
perspective people are free to use whatever tools they personally like best
for preparing translations.

- I much prefer to receive translations as .po files submitted to this list.
- I will occasionally accept translations submitted to GitHub, when there
isn't already a translator for that language submitting via this list.
- I will not go searching on transifex or on any other translation
platforms for more up to date translations.

So use the tools you like and are familiar with. Be aware of the above too.

The main problem I have as a developer getting translation in to Audacity,
is where more than one translator is working on a translation and they
disagree with each other. How would I know which translation is 'better'?

Generally I will prefer an established translator who has been contributing
in the past to a new translator who claims to have a better translation and
that 'everything the previous translator has ever translated is wrong'.

We are currently working towards Audacity 3.0.0. This will change the
project file format from 'pile of files' to a single file. In the past
many users were losing their audio because they did not realise that there
were many small files. This is a big change and is perhaps no surprise
that we still have some bugs to sort with it. We are hoping we will have
the updated .pot file with new strings to translate on 14th Nov.

The work you all do is awesome. You have no idea how much it is
appreciated.

It is also possible to download prebuilt audacity alphas from github, if
you have a github account.
(click on the green tick mark on https://github.com/audacity/audacity, then
click for details of windows_32 bit, and then - if you have made a github
account - you will see towards the top right a button saying 'Artifacts'.
A quick link to that download is

that link will change as we do new builds)

I've updated the audacity.pot file with the new strings from Audacity,

Updated .po files that match the .pot file are also available from the

Planned closing date for translation is 17th June.

Thanks scootergrisen.

I've added a how to download bit first.  It's not perfect, but better
than it was, I think.

Our wiki was meant to have more extensive information for translators,
as there is a great deal we could say!

We (now) link to this page for more information:

https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/For_Translators

If you'd like to improve what the wiki says, I can give you an account
to edit pages on it.  I think the info on our main website could be
reduced, and the details could then be on wiki, and go into more detail.

update.  We'll update the pot for that for 2.4.1.

Audacity so i can be sure the strings will be there correctly.

Also inside Audacity About dialog it says 2.3.3 not 2.3.3-rc03.

Re: [Audacity-translation] Open for translation for 2.4.0

2020-04-09 Thread James Crook

Preferred way is as a .po file attached to an email to this list.
I find this makes communication easier - important when there is a
change of translator or more than one translator and different opinions
about what the 'correct' translation is.

Thanks for asking.

We do need the .po file not the .mo file.

However, although I will take pull requests from GitHub, I prefer .po
files posted here.
If something is posted here, it means that the translator is subscribed
to this email list, and that is important especially when two people
contribute on the same language.  It also means they understand our
schedule better, the string freeze, the call for translation, and
collection of translations.

Re: [Audacity-translation] Audacity.pot for Audacity 2.3.2 Available.

2019-04-22 Thread James Crook

I'm not seeing translations of:

"You have attempted to Export a WAV file which would be greater than 4GB.\n"
"Audacity cannot do this, the Export was abandoned."

"Your exported WAV file has been truncated as Audacity cannot export WAV\n"
"files bigger than 4GB."

Could you check whether you did translate them?  Thanks.

Also please could you shorten the translation of this item a lot:

In English we have "32-bit float". We don't have room in the panel to

Yuri...
This looks super.

This file will need patching for the string fetching:
https://github.com/audacity/audacity/blob/master/locale/update_po_files.sh
use msgmerge as used in that script to collect Nyquist text, rather than
create a desktop.po file?

I'm not sure currently which file to patch for the results.

Yes, we'd welcome a patch for this.

Re: [Audacity-translation] Errors

2018-12-04 Thread James Crook
Nikitich, you've sent me 5 .po files in less than a week - and I feel
this is wasting my time.
You also removed the credits for previous translators.  I had to put
them back in.  Please don't do that either.

All the other translators are making good translations, without removing
previous translator credits, and being a lot more helpful to making the
translation process go smoothly.

These additional changes/fixes from you will this time have to wait for
after 2.3.1.   Russian translation is now closed for 2.3.1.

Re: [Audacity-translation] GUI bug: Localized Audacity loses some access keys

2018-12-01 Thread James Crook

Thanks.

I think you've done 'best possible' in reporting.  I've logged it as a
bug in our bug database and linked it to the forum post.  This bug won't
be fixed for 2.3.1, but I would hope we will at least look at what we
can do during 2.3.2.

Problems with translation are best reported here on this email list.
However, in this case the screenshots really help a lot, and having the
ones you took showing on the forum makes it easy to refer to them from
the bug report - so thanks for doing that.

The bug report is now in our bug database at:

https://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2043

Hi.
I found a minor inconvenience that some access keys get hidden at least in
Japanese.

I posted a topic about it on the alpha forum and Steve recommended me to
report it here, translation mailing list.
See the topic for details:
https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=68=102493
I hope it will be fixed.

P.S. I wonder how I should use the forum and this mailing list properly to
report localization issues.

Thanks,
Phroneris
