Increasing Awareness on Audiogames

Increasing Awareness on Audiogames

Hey everyone, Brian here. I'm the guy working on Lost and Hound, and another fully visual audiogame called Legacies that is a submarine stealth/narrative based game. I've also worked with Blind Sparrow on Ready to Roll, and I'm working with Ebon Sky Studios on Sable and Crimson Eclipse. A lot of my work in the past year has been behind the scenes and I have stopped updating demo versions of Lost and Hound, so I wanted to kind of post about stuff I've been doing to raise awareness of the blind gaming scene. Development on Lost and Hound is still going. I'm trying to add systems to the game so that you aren't doing the same thing over and over - following the trail. I'm trying to add little minigames like fetching a ball, playing tug of war or whatever to break it up. I've been presenting at conventions, most recently PAX Australia about the world of blind gaming. My talks are received very well, and people are incredibly interested in learning more about audiogames because it's generally completely new information to people. If you want to hear my talk, here is one of them. It's about designing games around accessibility, instead of finishing a game and clumsily retrofitting. https://youtu.be/g8omiypHUGcHere is an interview I did with Intel - it was about 5 minutes long and they cut it down to 1:25. It is not the best setting, on the show floor but it was nice that Intel took an interest in the audiogame scene. Here's an accessibility overview of Legacies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiqxkXE-Qd8So I know it seemed like I disappeared after a good amount of Lost and Hound development, but I'm still here and development is still going! I'm demoing it at PAX East in Boston next month, and hopefully speaking on accessibility design. Thank you all for your support on our Sable Holman Prize video, by the way.

Re: Increasing Awareness on Audiogames

@2 Thanks Naruto! @3 Thanks for the encouragement, Karate25. I agree - I've been applying to present this stuff wherever I can. Fingers crossed I'll be able to present it in Boston at PAX East, I haven't heard back yet! Also, with the woman creating the game with the music box, I think you're talking about Maeskye, we did indeed talk at length during PAX Australia and have kept up collaboration since. She's great because she's not just an audiogame dev - she's bringing this work into an academic space, working on her masters and this is the content. I think that's a powerful thing that will help move us forward if we can get some real academic material that can set precedence and pave the way for future academics. @4 This community has been amazing man. I feel really lucky that people value what I'm doing. I also feel lucky to be involved with Ebon Sky and Blind Sparrow. There's some really exciting things going on in the world of accessible gaming! @5 Thank you SLJ! I will!

Upcoming Free Accessible Sound Design Course

Upcoming Free Accessible Sound Design Course

Hey everyone, I'm one of the members of Ebon Sky Studios and in an informal chat last night we kind of stumbled upon the idea of creating a video series so that members of this community can become sound designers, which will increase the quality of all the games we put out as a whole. The reason I did not post this in the developer section is the purpose of this is to reach people who love audiogames but never thought about creating content for them. I'm sighted, and I've only just realised that the resources for learning sound design are plentiful for sighted people online. I've been researching tutorials and all of them refer to visual activity too often to be accessible. I'm going to create a series under the Ebon Sky banner that will teach anyone how to be a sound designer from the ground up. I'm going to be using Reaper, which is free for 60 days and after that (I've read, I'm installing it now) it's still free but you have to click past a screen suggesting you buy it. I'm going to be using NVDA for a screen reader, and I'll have the screen reader on during all of the videos, narrating what I'm doing. Also I'll be using the Osara plugin for Reaper. Reaper: https://www.reaper.fm/download.phpOsara: https://github.com/jcsteh/osaraThe series will not start for a little while - perhaps in a month or so, when our Ebon Sky/Sable video series ends. I'm posting this to try to gather up as many people as we can to join in and create sounds. We will be processing sound effects, creating sound effects from scratch (foley), processing vocal material, best practice in recording the voice, and a few other things here and there. Furthermore, I'm going to post the videos to YouTube, and I'm thinking about making it as interactive as possible - I'll give an assignment and if you want to do it you can post your results as comments. Or perhaps in a thread here. Lastly, please comment with your interest level. If this already exists somewhere - please let me know. If this isn't something you want at all, please let me know. Thanks!

Re: Upcoming Free Accessible Sound Design Course

I just installed Reaper, it says you will need to purchase a license key to use it after 60 days. The licenses are $60.Reaper will be the most powerful software under $300 (and I'm told it still can match up quite evenly with the high end stuff) and it's the only accessible software I know of. This might not be something we can get around but if you're serious about being a sound designer, I think $60 is reasonable. We'll see if we can get around this down the track.

@4 I thought about doing Goldwave, Omer, but from what I'm reading, Reaper is among the best software you can use - it holds its own with the highest quality software on the market and it's free, and at most it's $60. I think that's pretty cool, we may as well begin the course with the best accessible software out there. I hear a lot of good things about Goldwave, but with Reaper I think everyone will be able to produce stuff they could sell online, or produce work for a sighted game.

Hey everyone, sounds like this is a good idea then. I'm looking forward to it. I've been talking with Kristijan - #12 - because I'm sighted and I'm afraid I'm going to overlook some critical steps, particularly in setting up the program to run as efficiently as possible.Again, I have a trip overseas to promote Lost and Hound at PAX East and hopefully give a discussion on audiogames and accessibility through game design, and I'm back home in the middle of April. That, or perhaps slightly before, is when the course will start. Thanks for all the kind words, this sounds like it'll be a lot of fun!

@23 and @24I don't plan to use VSTs. Plugins and VSTs are great and all but they are mostly shortcuts to things you can do yourself, through EQ, gain, etc. I plan on focusing this course on making people experts at the basics of sound design, through which a lot of the plugins and VSTs you get are irrelevant. We won't be doing music either. Maybe later. But don't stress about VSTs, I didn't plan on using them

Hey everyone, really excited about the level of enthusiasm here. I mentioned it twice before but I'll mention it again because I don't want anyone thinking I'm procrastinating on this course - I'm showing Lost and Hound at PAX East in Boston in the end of March.Once that is over, it's full steam ahead with this course. I'll go into a bit more depth just so people know what they're in for. It will be featured on YouTube and I will be giving assignments/homework, usually one or two tasks per video. I will provide *ALL* the audio (wavs) you need. It will all be free to download and free to use in personal and commercial products - either my own work or work that has been released freely to the public, license free. If you do not want to post your work on YouTube I will create a companion thread here. I don't want people to feel like they need to deviate outside of this forum regarding exposure of their development. I do, however, strongly recommend taking part in the interactivity of this course. I haven't created a course for sighted people because there are hundreds but also, they're competition and I don't want to give away my secrets. However, as there are no other accessible courses on sound design that I know of, I'm happy giving all of you my secrets because I want you to succeed and when you get rich and famous as a sound designer, I want you mentioning my name. ***Warning***I take audio licenses very seriously. If I get wind of people passing around audio which they do not have permission to publish or upload on the internet, I will stop the course immediately because I do not want my name and the name of my business associated with an audio piracy ring. That being said, rarely do people get in trouble for working with unlicensed audio in a personal capacity. I just thought it needed to be said that I will not risk damaging my livelihood if laws are breached in association with this course.

Audio license types:CC-0 - the best kind. Creative Commons Zero - you can do ANYTHING with this sound. You can even download these sounds off of freesound.org and sell them as assets. This is the ONLY type of sound you can sell as a sound - every other license type must be a part of some type of project or media. CC-BYThe most common license - Creative Commons - Attribution. You MUST give credit to the creator if you use this in any form. You can copy and redistribute this sound in any form. You can adapt it for any purpose, even commercially. CC-BY-NC Creative Commons - Attribution, NonCommercial. No money must change hands whatsoever when this is used. I just thought it needed to be said that I will not risk damaging my livelihood if laws are breached in association with this course. If you're looking to make money in the future with this stuff or with Sable, I urge you, as strongly as possible, to make a library of CC0 sounds you find on freesound. Even if it's a sound you don't know if you're ever going to use, if it is a high quality sound, grab it and it is now YOURS forever without limit.

If anyone comes to me in the future with licensing wrongdoing from someone from this course, I need to be able to point to a communication and say "This is where I said not to do this." and that's what that post is.

Re: Upcoming Free Accessible Sound Design Course

@38 It's going to begin with giving everyone a good, solid knowledge of EQing. I have all sorts of filters and effects but EQ is what makes a sound absolutely shine, it's the only process I use on every single thing that I do, and it's the only way to balance sounds in layers (apart from sidechain ducking and such but that will come later too). Another really big thing EQing will do for us is, it will double the amount of usable sounds on FreeSounds because we'll be able to clean up sounds with noise or edit out certain distortions. So once we're complete superstars with EQ which will probably take a few weeks, then we'll move on to other stuff like compressors, recording, monster sounds, etc.

@176 I do have a Paypal and Patreon, I won't link them directly though. This course is being put on by myself and by Ebon Sky Studios because we're looking to really show the community that we're interested in raising the quality of audiogames in multiple facets: this course, the Sable engine, and just bringing people together to make great accessible games. I worry that message will lose a lot of its power if we add finances and donations to it. If you're really interested please message me, and thank you - I do appreciate what you're saying. It means a lot, to know that this course is valuable enough for people to want to pay for it. Thank you for that, Che.

@178You are searching Freesounds for three categories, a sound in each: 1. WhooshThe sound when the spell is coming towards its target or is building up2. ImpactThe sound of the spell hitting the target3. FlavourThe type of spell - ice, fire, wind, lightning, whateverSo you need to search freesounds for one good, usable sound from each category then line them up with , and . using three different tracks and layering the sounds on top of each other. Does that make any more sense?

@169 I'm really glad you said that - that's exactly what we want to accomplish here.I respect that a lot of you have a working knowledge of this stuff so you can tinker and achieve what you want. What I want to achieve for you is that you can be sitting on your couch, building a sound effect in your head, thinking "Okay I need a blunt weapon attack. That will start with a short whooshy swing, maybe with a bit of the mids raised 3db or so and the highs nice and swishy, and for an impact I'll find or record punching a ham, maybe even with a very short bass drum sweetener with all the highs EQ'd out, and I might also add a nice snapping celery stalk that I record or find online, with lots of crunchy transients to simulate bone breaking. I might even find a nice squishing fruit sound, like a tomato, to add to give it just a tiny bit more authenticity. I'll compress everything on the impact sound with a sharp knee and parallel compression filter and EQ as needed."The better you get at this stuff the more of the work is done in your head, as opposed to tweaking and discovering. It will soon switch from discovery to planning and executing.

@166Sounds great, the underwater and radio filters are perfect. I see you added a pitch modification for fun, sounds good as long as it was on purpose!Optimisation is good - it's not a strong enough effect though. Try moving your second band from 2,500Hz to 4,000Hz and raising the DB just slightly. The band width is perfect. Also you'll notice - I still have quite a few plosive sounds that are causing a problem. You can take care of this by moving band 1 up just 20Hz. Band 1 is almost perfect and if I didn't purposefully hit those P sounds so hard, it would've been fine, but experiment with just moving it a tiny bit to see if it has a difference. I will say, really tight optimisation going on. You are using a very light touch which is exactly what we're going for - a little bit goes a long way. It just needs a TINY bit more

Re: Accessible Sound Design by Ebon Sky Studios - Second Lesson Up

@177You really did some great work here. The EQing is excellent as is the fading in and out, as well as the layering.I think your impact and your flavour sounds are too similar, and while they're EQ'd perfectly to bring out the real colour of the sounds, the EQing on them is exactly the same. The ear can't really tell the difference between impact and flavour and it doesn't sound "zappy" enough to me. You EQ'd a nice bump in the lows of the impact but the sound doesn't have any lows to bring up - if this were something like an earth spell, I'd say add a thump in there but electricity doesn't necessarily have that punchy boom in it, so you made a good call there. I had a play with it and added on a lightning sound, slightly lower volume with a somewhat long fadein and out. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ph4t95s9cxnyi … 2.wav?dl=1What do you think of that? I think your sound was 80% there but your choice of impact and flavour was too similar. If you want to further experiment with what I did, here's a really amazing electricity sound that I used there. https://freesound.org/people/Halleck/sounds/19486/

Hey everyone - apologies for the radio silence again. I'll be grading these Saturday and Sunday, and getting on to recording a new lesson Sunday as well. I've said it before but just so folks don't think I'm neglecting, I work at the local Arts Centre as a theatre/audio tech and work just pops up sometimes, in kind of a drop everything and go situation. I've had that happen and was not planning for it. But new stuff coming soon! Keep it up and mention the course to anyone you know that might be interested. Once the course ends it won't be interactive anymore and that's the most valuable part of this.

@187Awesome! I loved the flavour sound - you said you didn't like it but I thought it was fine. I guess that's the thing about magic missile, it's not quite fireball is it where it's the same in every story universe? Your sound choices sounded great to me. I saw that you gave a nice wide EQ on your flavour sound. I experimented and raised it by half - it brings some more of those wavy trebly bits in, experiment with that. EQing is great but once we get good at it we over-EQ everything for a while. Also, your whoosh sound ended before your impact sound began. I think we might need to look into stretching that whoosh sound slightly, or moving it backwards a bit in time. Great work, really well done!

@194 Really cool ice bolt going on there.EQing is great, file selection is great. The only thing I would change is - your flavour sound is a bit long and not too active. I would cut it into 3 parts and layer them.Try this: add two new tracks. Slice your flavour sound up and layer them on top of one another, all starting at the same time. It will be a much denser sound, and have them end right around when the impact fades out. Great work!

@190I can't believe I glossed over that in the video. Moving things is simply , and . again sorry that's my fault. I mentioned all the shift and alt combinations but not the simple move function!Really great layering going on in this track. You layered a hissing sound over your whoosh and that really kicked it up a notch. You EQ'd this extra texture with a +12dB gain at 1kHz, but all those awesome scratchy textures are really more around 4kHz. Try moving your EQ up to get the most out of that sound. You also EQ'd a lot of lower frequencies. We almost never do this because it makes for very muddy sound. Try this. Remove ALL of the low EQ bumps you gave to the tracks. Then, mute track 2 and 3. You have a kind of double explosion going on - when you mute track 2 and 3 it sounds much more like a traditional spellcast. Flavour is a great trailing out, also, by the way. Something weird is happening at 2.799. It's a pop in the sound. I think you had a lot of tracks selected and his the slice button because there are a lot of breaks in tracks. The pop is happening on track 4 - your "wooshHissing" track has a great natural fadeout - I recommend just dragging the track all the way to its end and letting its natural fade take care of things. Great work!

@189 It's true that I may have brought up shifting contents inside an item too soon, but I'd rather people stumble through it now than struggle through it later. The main skill this course is building up to is the most coveted sound design skill: creating incredible ambience loops. That is the most marketable and useful thing a sound designer for games can do and I want people to be ready for it.Also, a lot of the flavour we get from sounds is the reverb tail, or the fadeout sound. I want people to be able to shift around to find the best part of it, viewing the items they import into a project like windows. They can use these buttons to shift around what is seen through the window. I want people to stumble so I can help them back up, instead of get overwhelmed by this shifting notion later on. I'll go over it in more depth in the next video though, thank you for the feedback.

@193 I'd have to agree. I don't touch healing or gluing because they change the basic elements of the audio. I'd rather undo or make a new track and experiment, and not touch what I'm trying to fix. It just isn't worth it. It's like that with most functions in these programs that try to auto-fix things, they change the file in ways you may not have wanted.

Re: Accessible Sound Design by Ebon Sky Studios - Second Lesson Up

@210You did some really subtle work here, it sounds good. Technically, the only thing I would fix is that you EQ'd the lower ends up on two different tracks, to give them a gain bump.We generally never want to do this. It makes the track peak (distort) and it also rarely needs to be done - if you need more lows, maybe give a 3db boost at most but not a 9 db one. If you don't have enough low punchyness going on at +3db, you need to layer more sounds underneath it. I know, this wasn't part of the assignment, I just want to get the message across that we rarely, rarely bump the lower frequencies in EQ. If you render your work (ctrl+alt+R, then enter) you'll probably find the beginning heavily distorted due to those lows. So technically, your work is excellent with one thing to fix.Aesthetically, it sounds more like fire than ice to me and I recognise that we're entering opinion territory. Your idea of an ice sound might be different to mine but I picture not a lot of "boominess" in the sound. I'd bring the lows in that impact sound down. I also picture a LOT of crackling sounds, which you have in the sound files you chose but they fade out before we get to enjoy them. I'd also give them a nice EQ bump on the higher ends, I'd experiment between 3,000Hz and 20,000Hz. I'm very impressed with your global fadeout. I didn't know Reaper could do that, so thank you for teaching me something.

This work is great - it's just 2 steps away from perfection! You're right in saying your whoosh sound doesn't lead up or line up properly. Create a fade in in the whoosh sound, and take all of your high EQing off of the first track - we lost the impact sound because you wanted the low boom to come out but we need those highs too! That's it. It sounds amazing now. You could take it a step further and add a fade out in the third track. Great alignment, great file choice, it sounds fine mate you just need to do those few steps and this is a AAA game sound.

SO it does not matter if it is reaComp, or waves c6, or whatever else. Hence why I had said such things are most likely achieved easier using reaper. This might explain why sometimes the compression effect or other things you apply might not be that noticeable at first--you would need to turn the dry signal completely off, or set it to minus infinity, so that you would have just the output of the compressor and nothing else. This is why its also better to work with sends and buses when more tracks and so on are involved, because you can then choose exactly how much of an effect you want applied without affecting the others--you might even pan the output of the fx differently, or boost something but only do it on the output of the effect (a bit of highs for instance) to give more impact to a glass breaking, and so on.I'll say it again. You're splitting hairs. I said we have a parallel compression going on through both faders. You said no.I elaborated and said, yes, in fact we do.Then, you elaborated on the capability of both wet and dry signal. Accessible Sound Design Course (Free)

Hi everyone. This will be the official thread of my accessible sound design course. It will be hosted on YouTube. I encourage commenting on the videos, but I will be assigning tasks for you to complete and show me. If you are uncomfortable with posting your work on YouTube, you can post it here. You can send me direct messages if you're really uncomfortable, but if I'm answering 30+ direct messages each video it will take up a lot more time than commenting in threads. Warnings: 1. Don't publish/sell content if the sound requires a license you don't have2. Headphones are not the best idea starting out. If you click a wrong button and increase gain (amount of signal sent to output), you could hurt your ears and damage hearing. When you begin work in a sound editor, put your computer sound at 25-50% max in the taskbar and I really recommend using a stereo.Vocabulary:FrequencyThe spectrum of sound, represented in Hertz. HertzThe unit of measurement for frequency. Humans can hear between 40 Hertz (Hz) and 20,000 Hz. People measure Hz sometimes in their metric measurements, such as Kilohertz. We will not, because it's better and less confusing to use larger numbers than to be converting numbers in your head all the time. PitchHighness or lowness of a sound as determined by how many vibrations (sound waves) occur in a given timeOctaveA musical term - one set of notes using a major scale - doe, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, doe. While the first doe is 8 notes away from the second, the wavelengths match up perfectly and they're technically the same note, however the second is simply twice as high.

2019-03-18 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : daisyalesoundworks via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course (Free)

It's important to know how Hertz behave also. Hertz are the literal measurement of a soundwave - the lower the number, the longer the wave, and the lower the pitch of that sound. The male human vocal range is around 85hz to 180hz, while the female is  around 160hz to 255hz.  However, many consonants we use in speech occur around the 1,000hz to 3,000hz range and some higher. This is what I meant about behaviour - picture a soundwave as long as your arm. Let's pretend that soundwave is 1,000hz. (I'm saying pretend because it's pointless to know how large soundwaves are, spatially, for our purpose so honestly I don't know if that's correct and it doesn't matter, we're just using it as a case example to illustrate the beahviour of hz.)So one soundwave as long as your forearm, elbow to wrist, it's 1,000hz. If we now imagine a soundwave that is 2,000hz, that means two of them can fit lengthwise on your forearm, and the pitch that sound makes is twice as high, or an octave, above the first sound. Let's imagine another set of soundwaves, at 4,000hz. Four can fit lengthwise on your forearm, and they're yet again another octave above, or twice the pitch. The next set would be 8,000hz and 8 can fit on your arm. So the point is - a sound will double in pitch/note/octave if its measurement of hz. doubles. That's very important to know, because the sound spectrum seems as though we humans have an incredible capacity for hearing if the human range only takes up a hundred hz or so, and we can hear all the way up to 20,000hz. Not so. Another case example - a man is singing a note at 150hz. If we record and process that note up to 300hz, it's an octave above/twice the pitch. If we do it again, 600hz, that's two octaves above. 1200hz is three, 2400hz is four, 4800hz is five, 9600hz is six, 19200hz is seven and suddenly we're out of our range of hearing.

Use speakers if possible in the beginning. If you hit a wrong button you could increase volume to a dangerous level. This could damage your ears. Keep your sound at 25-50% maximum in the system settings of the computer. We will begin with vocabulary.

I won't be using the term kilohertz because it's easier to use larger numbers than ask people to convert in their head - and most equalisation graphs do not use kilohertz, they just use hertz in large numbers. I think because we have to remember certain parts of the EQ graph, it's important to not add another step of logic/conversion in there. So you're quite right in what you're saying and it seems what I am saying is unclear!

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course (Free)

@9 You're overthinking it, and I think I know why. If you spend time on what are considered the top tier audio specialist forums, they'll convince you that you're nothing without top of the line gear. It's not true. That's what this course will prove - with the bare minimum of expenses we can produce some top quality sound. Here's a sound that I made with my voice and some free sound effects, some clever EQing and lots of layering. I used a $70 microphone to record, and an audio interface that cost $200, but only because it's mobile. One can get a decent  interface (meaning a piece of equipment connecting an analogue microphone to a computer) for $50-100.Warning: the end of this sound is loud. https://www.dropbox.com/s/a63z9gxlneirl … k.wav?dl=0That's the point of what we're doing. I'm going to begin by teaching everyone how to take sounds on free sites, how to find not only the good ones but also, the ones that have flaws we can fix. I'll teach how to fix them. This opens up the amount of viable sounds that are free, quite a lot. Also just a note, I don't use a mac, and NVDA is free.Seriously mate what you're saying - it echoes what all the "pros" are saying online but it just isn't true. Or rather, it's true only to extremely negligible diminishing returns: there are probably less than .01% of the population that can tell the difference between your work after this course, and the work of someone who has spent $10,000 on gear.

I'll bring all my sound design expertise to the table and offer it freely, but we'll all need to help set the table to begin with. Thanks for this, I'll try to condense it into a shorter guide.

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course - Set up Reaper Now, Before the Course

@23 and @29, it won't be a livestream, and that's for your benefit. I'm going to stumble, navigating only with the keyboard and NVDA. It's really going to take me some time to get moving at as quick a speed as I am with my native DAW Cubase which is completely inaccessible. I'm going to record videos, edit out all the parts that are me figuring things out, and post them to YouTube. They'll stay there forever so you don't have to stress about catching the course during the time it runs. @27 @30 @31 @34This is exactly what I want this course to be, thank you. I want everyone helping each other understand, and I really appreciate you guys answering a question while I'm in an inactive period. (I have the PAX East convention coming up and I'm stressing out preparing two games and a talk on blind accessibility in gaming) Thank you guys for helping everyone out, keep it up, you are among the best parts of this community.

I'm happy to let you all decide this. I'll use whatever format you like - I'm not pushing Discord, at all. We'll just need to come to a consensus. Zoom, teamtalk, skype are all fine with me. Ideally, I'd love to have different rooms in the group, such as "Current assignment", "Reaper Shortcuts" etc

Okay @56 and @57, you're right.I'm looking into Riot Matrix as mentioned in post 54. It still isn't as good as Discord for organization, and all the others mentioned do not allow for different rooms for different topics. Riot allows rooms but they are all separate - it's like each topic having its own house, whereas Discord is one house with separate rooms for different topics. I'll change the course of discussion: what is inaccessible in Discord, and how can we overcome it?

@60 No. We will still have lots of dialogue here, in this thread. Discord (or if there's a better choice) will be organised into rooms: Reaper Questions, NVDA Shortcuts, Sound Design tips, EQ Questions, Assignment 1, Assignment 2, etc.It will make information and your education much easier to manage - honestly it will save you time. Instead of searching through this thread, you'll be able to look up material by topic.

Simba, looking up Team Speak now - it hadn't been mentioned yet. I looked into Team Talk but the rooms aren't connected. It looks like they are in Team Speak? This could definitely be the best choice for us. I'm going to poke around in it now. Team Speak and Discord are the only ones that have a connected set of rooms for different topics but under one banner/account/mod.

Alright Team Speak is out. Still looking. Discord is the only one that meets our needs right now in terms of how we organise the information you'll need to refer to.

@70 and @72 I will still be active here, in this thread. I will copy and paste any relevant information into this thread. Discord is not required. It is simply there to organise information. If a tip is shared about how to properly layer an explosion sound effect, if we put it in here, each person interested is going to have to spend a minimum 5 minutes searching for it. I don't have that kind of time. I assume you don't either. Discord will organise all of the information into different categories, that's all. If it's too inaccessible I respect that - you can ask your question in here and we'll answer it when we can.

Space reserved for the specifications of lesson 1.Assignment 1:Download the following file. Open Reaper. Press control T for a new trackPress Alt V and scroll down, selecting FX browserWhen you hear "tree view" find "EQ" and press enter. That effect is now applied to the track.Press Alt I and select media file. Find the file you downloaded by navigating through your OS, probably downloads folder. Press tab until you hear "frequency slider" or "frequency HZ edit" Set the frequency to anywhere between 20 and 2000. You'll need to come back to tweak this setting later.Press tab. Set the type to "band" in the combo box. Press tab. Set the band gain slider to anything below 0. You'll need to come back to tweak this setting. Press tab. Set the bandwidth somewhere between 0.2 and 3. You'll need to come back to tweak this setting. Your task is to tweak those three settings to produce the following effects on my voice: DO NOT. DO NOT. DO NOT. Increase gain at all above 0. 1. Make my voice sound like I'm talking to you through a radio. Experiment with different hZ.2. Make my voice sound like I'm talking underwater. Experiment with different hZ. 3. Challenge. Make my voice optimised. There is no set formula here, as EQing depends on each voice.Use a high pass filter in the combo box mentioned earlier, and remove everything below 60hZ. This will cut out the "muddiness" of the sound.Leave tab 1 alone now! When you hear "bands tab control" press right and move to tab 2.Make the band type "band". Make the band gain around 3dB. Make the band width slider around 0.3, something nice and skinny. Make the band frequency around 2,000 hZ. Experiment here. Move on to band 3!Lower the gain to -3dB. Set the frequency around 400hZ. Set the band width around 0.8These are the basic settings for voice optimisation. They cut down on the low muddiness in the male voice, they lower the frequency of the middle of the band, and slightly emphasize the consonants. Play the file back, pressing B to bypass the effects you've just created, to hear the difference.

@93 Thank you for that - I'd been looking for the time selection tool. This will be a big deal in the next lesson because the way you remove noise from a recording is to find a moment of silence and play it on repeat, and EQ the inherent noise that way. @97 That's my next task. I have a guide made for me by someone on this forum so I'm going to post that soon too.

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course - First Lesson Up

@89 Excellent work. I see you added a bump of 3dB in the radio and underwater objectives at various places. It served you well, sounds great. On the optimisation, your decisions were excellent. I'd recommend people check out the third track in @89's work. Optimising the voice needs to be seen like recipes that we're adapting to the specific voice. Sometimes it needs a little more spice and flavour, sometimes it has too much in some areas. What was done here, for anyone that is interested but not checking out the file: Band 1Frequency: 72 HzGain: 0 dBBandwidth: 2.49Type: High PassA high pass filter is very important and we'll get into why next lesson. What it does is cuts out all of the low frequencies and let's the high ones pass. Band 2Frequency: 2500HzGain: 3.6dBBandwidth: .3Type: BandThis accentuates consonants.Band 3Frequency: 442 HzGain: -3dBBandwidth: .8 Type: BandThe purpose of this is to dampen the middle frequencies. These are the frequencies that resonate in our skull - the human ear gets sick of them. When they're dampened, we pay more attention naturally to consonants and lower warmth in the voice, that's what gives us that epic hollywood sound when we're optimising voice. Assignment 2: Wind noise is gone, well done.

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course - First Lesson Up

@92 Excellent work. Assignment 1, radio emulation is great. You placed the frequency at 100Hz, -30dB gain and bandwidth of 2. Exactly the sound we are going for. You can even get more aggressive with your negative gain if we want older and older radios/telephones - for example a -40dB gain sounds like a radio from the 60's.Your underwater emulation is too low on the frequency - we want to cut out higher frequencies. Your bandwidth is quite large which is fine, but your frequency is at 330 so what happened is, you are cutting out all the low frequencies we want. Try keeping the band width and gain the same, but move the first band to a higher frequency like 6,000Hz. Your voice optimisation is perfect - don't change a thing. And if I were you I'd write down that exact combination of EQing for voice optimisation as a starter point, and tweak from there. Again EQing is like a recipe book and you've found a really great recipe with that combination. Assignment 2 is also excellent. You achieved exactly what I asked for - the wind noise is gone.If we're preparing this sound for a client, we might want to be wary of cutting out the natural wind howling/gusting noise. For this assignment, again, great job, 100%. But just be wary that your band width is VERY wide at 1 here, and it does cut out all that nice howling. It's good to know that for the future. Experiment with a width of .15 to see what I mean. Very well done.

Re: Accessible Sound Design Course - First Lesson Up

@103 Yes you did, but it worked perfectly hahah. I'll allow it! You are clearly well versed in Reaper so I'm not too worried that you got to the finish line from a different path. It sounds like you know how to get the sound you want but you're taking the course to understand the "why" better? Let me know if that's incorrect. Yeah that sounds good. That's the next step - we're going to remove noise that's present in a few different places next time and we'll really need to repeat the same second of silence over and over and over to get it right. That was helpful that you shared that. It is *crazy* how many really great sounds there are on freesound that people overlook due to wind noise, and it's a 20 second fix for us now.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@108 I'll work on my voice being louder next time. I'm not at home - at home I have some nice monitors but I'm now staying with my parents for a visit for a few weeks as I live on the other side of the world. Anyway the point is, I'm using gear I'm not used to. That problem will fix itself next video. It sounds like your band is too wide - it's cutting out a lot more frequencies than we need. Have you tried a band that is very thin, like .15? I'd say that's where you want to start. You would probably want to download some static noise and overlay it on top of my voice in another track. Freesound will have some.We could generate some but that will be in a future lesson and I don't know how to do it with Reaper. But the process would be to find a tone generator, set it to white or pink noise and bring the volume to barely audible, it'll add some nice textures. We would also need to automate the volume so it isn't just playing full bore all the time. Yes, upload your saved project so I can get in there and dig around, checking what you did. Cheers!

@109If you find the right frequency, .15 would be enough to cut out the low rumbling sounds. If you listen to them - they don't change in pitch (highness or lowness) at all. It's all the same low tone which means we don't need a wide filter at all. Try placing a .15 band, -40dB at around 50 or 60Hz.
