Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joao Jacob

2020-01-14 Thread E. Sharp
Elaine,

Myself and Celeste have researched mainland Portugal. Many of the records are
now online now even some passportes records and Joao Ventura from Portugal (not
the Azores one) is still adding to them. You will need area of Lisboa he/she
came from same as Azores research. I did personally go to the archives in
Lisbon a couple of times quite a few years ago. I did manage to meet my large
family still living in Lisboa and hosted a family reunion at our hotel twice
andstill keep in contact with them. I don’t think there is a Portugal list
anymore but others on this list might be able to reach out to you to help.
Check out tombo.pt website.

The difference of DNA tests between FTDNA and Ancestry is impossible to
understand.I traced a line very carefully. One brother used FTDNA, his
sister used Ancestry. FTDNA results came out very closely to my research to
the 1500’s Portuguese, Italian, Croatian and English. Ancestry says mostly
FrenchI have found no French thus far in this family Go figure.

Are you talking about mainland Portugal? You can try contacting Torre do Tombo
in Lisbon. Also website familysearch.org has some records online. Also google
Portugal genealogy to see if there are genealogist in one of those sites to
help you but be prepared to pay for these services. I have been to Torre do
Tombo and I believe most, if not all, their records are located there. They
also charge a fee. Depending on what you are looking for, I would hire
someone over there to
do the research for you. That’s what I ended up doing years ago as I do not
read or speak the language.

For those of you doing a genealogy trip in 2020, Delta Airlines will no longer

records and with computers you printed out everything. I am approaching my mid
80’s and now faced with getting rid of 8 drawers of records. Do I just shred

BTW I am No. 12 of 12 children. 6 boys, 6 girls. We are now 4 girls in our

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Mount St Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Hayward (California?)

2019-05-27 Thread E. Sharp
I had this problem at St. John’s in New Bedford where 2 of my siblings were
buried before I was born. I went to the cemetery office a quite a few years ago
(since moved) and they gave me the grave marker numbers and we spent a day in
the heat digging for the markers (all stones had numbers on them so it was not
too hard to find the markers.) My siblings and I had proper gravestones made
for them. I wish I would have done it before my mom passed away as she alway
wondered where her 2 babies who died a few weeks apart were buried. I don’t
know how this brave, wonderful mother managed losing 2 children a few weeks
apart.

[AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA and Ancestry Results

2019-04-28 Thread "E" Sharp
Which one is correct??? A brother tested with FTDNA and results are 40%
Iberian, 20% Southwest Europe, 11% East Europe, 9% West and Central Europe,
7% British Isles. others are miniscule. His sister tested with ANCESTRY
and results are 39% French, 29% Portuguese, 12% Mali, 4 Italy, others are
miniscule. Same mother, same father. I did their genealogy for them and
it mostly follows the results from FTDNA. I have no idea where the French
came from in Ancestry results?? Has anyone else tested with both of these
and had very different results?

Thanks "E"

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] A question about following the correct lineage

2019-02-24 Thread E. Sharp
Sam, these things happened in the U. S. also. A few years back, I followed my
husband’s great grandfather from Alabama for a year. Same names in the family
so I was sure I had found him and researched them for a year. One email from
one of the family descendants proved me wrong!! They were excited to meet new
family members and we were also. What a disappointment!! I did eventually
find the right family and, believe it or not, my mother in law’s note that he
was captured in the Civil War and sent to Prison camp proved to be right!!
However, I did find his Civil War record, and later found out it was noted by
family he died walking on his way back to Alabama after his release. Proven in
next State census as father listed “lost 2 sons in the War”. Sad. Later thru
DNA, my husband matched with the second family I had researched. Sometimes you
have to take the written word with a grain of salt or, better yet, a bottle of
wine.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestor info- Antonio Brier

2019-02-05 Thread "E" Sharp
Corinne,

I found an Antonio Brier born in Fayal/Faial Azores 2/27/1872. Arrived in
New Bedford 3/30/1888. Naturalized in 1900. So from what I can figure
outthis is the Portuguese side of your family tree. Jon F. Barnes
married his daughter Josephine Brier. Josephine's mother is not
Portuguese. If Antonio came to US in 1888, which would have made him 16
which would mean married here...probably in MA? Josephine was born in the
United States. I would look at the Passportes working back from
3/30/1888. Others on the list can tell you what port he would have left
from as I am not sure of this. At my age, I have difficulty reading these
Passportes records. I will keep searching.

In the 1930 U. S. census there is a John Viskovich 54 to US 1895, Josephine 38
to US 1909, both born in Yugoslavia (Croatia) NA Plumber, children Nicholas,
19, Michael, 18, Theresa, 17, Anna, 15, Antonio 11. All kids born NY. Living in
Messina, St. Lawrence County NY. Also 2 boarders. I am very aware of this name
changing as my family came from Yugoslavia now Croatia in 1800 to Portugal and
depending on where the family is now living the name is spelled 4 different
ways!!! Living now in Croatia, Italy, Portugal, Brazil and U. S. Oh. Also
Costa Rica. And eventually I found all of them and visited them in these

Cheri,

The new rule for CA driver ID has been moved to 2020. You can get it now and
should especially if you are renewing your license as my husband has done and
it is a pain to get. You have to bring your birth certificate (no copy), social
security card, and proof of where you live... they used our car registration
AND they take photocopies of all of these! I was not happy about this. Not
sure I trust them with copies of all these documents. If you go to renew your
license without these and get the regular license(makes no sense) you have to
pay again for the new one so go prepared!!!

now, the only thing DNA tests are really good at is finding relatives;
family members--cousins, an unknown daughter another nephew is the father

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Question

I helped a neighbor do their FTDNA. They now have the results. They are
sister and brother. They matched the same male person...she 250 cm (1-3
cousin) and he 115 cm (2-4 cousin) . Would this mean this male was closer
to the female side of the family since the sister has more cm? Could it be
they are related to this male person other than cousins? i.e. nephew or ??

Manuel A. Fonte and Amelia Enos married in Alameda County CA April 7,

I can search further if you would like me to. Do you live in CA? If so,
you can get copy of their marriage record...if not, I might be able to help

Elaine,

I have had this book for a very long time and it is well worn and I did
order it from APGHS years ago. I believe these same records on now on
FindAGrave. The book does not list those who did not have a grave marker
like my siblings so I went to the cemetery office (not at the cemetery
anymore) and they looked up the names for me and gave me the marker numbers
and that is how we found them. I visited this cemetery on my trip from CA
to MA last month to put flowers on the graves of my family members.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel F. Sylvia/Silva

2018-07-20 Thread "E" Sharp
Maggie,

When Manuel F. Sylvia sister Mary married Paulino Medeiros 5/18/1892 she
listed her name as Maria Francisca da Silva and her parents as Manuel F.
and Izabel F. Silva. Maybe the spelling of the Sylvia surname is incorrect
on cemetery records???

Maggie,

This online record shows Paulino and Mary both buried in St. John Section
#1086.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/43794319/paulino-medeiros

I have St. John's Cemetery book and when I have time I will try to find
your Manuel F. Sylvia. Otherwise, you can call the cemetery office and be
real niceand give them Manuel's dates and maybe they can find the
record for you. We had a brother and sister buried there and they did not
have stones, only number markers that were buried so deep we had to use a
knife to find them and my siblings and I purchased stones for them. My
parents could not afford to pay for the burial in those days so the
cemetery charged us for the burial when we purchased the stones but it was
not much.

the old days?) or did they only do this for girls???

Thank you.

Great work, Mary!! I told you, Sparrow, this list has super, helpful people on
it. You now have the marriage record and Therese baptism record and more
family names.

Cheri, I told Sparrow that if she wants to do FTDNA to ask you about your
procedure. She may match others and find cousins on the DNA list.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Vale das Furnas Families books

2018-02-18 Thread "E" Sharp
Cheri and others,

OK.so this is where my message belongedand it does have the book as
subjectIDK what happened when I replied from my iphone while in the car
as it was supposed to go here...so here it goes again.

I think, I hope many will be interested in these books. Years ago when I
went to Croatia I found out many years ago, a young man on the island wrote
notes about the people living on Italian/Croatian island my family came
from. My Archbishop cousin had them reprinted into 5 very heavy books. The
cost was $200. One of the best $200 I ever spent for my genealogy. I
bought them whilst there and carried them home in my luggage (before weight
was an issue, thank God) and also carried them all over Europe for the rest
of my trip. To my knowledge, these books were never reprinted. I cannot
read, write, speak Italian, Croatian or Portuguese for that matter..but
I have this family back to the 1503!! To this day I still reference my
books.

Do not pass the offer up for these books if you have an interest in this
area of the Azores.

Listers,

I would like to add to that if you have older members in the family be sure
to test them now. My husband has traced his paternal line with a Y-DNA and
also did FF. However, there is no living female in his family for her to
do an mtDNA to follow his maternal line. He had only one sister and she
had 4 sons and is now deceased. My husband is particularly interested in
the mtDNA line of his family and I'm afraid he is out of luck.
