Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Phone for a month in the Azores

2018-06-05 Thread Linda J Magellan
I am just now returning from a month long trip to Lisboa and Santa Maria. I
purchased a SIM card when I landed in Lisboa, 5 May, and it has worked fine the
whole time. I was able to make calls within Portugal, and I used the internet
daily. I paid 10€ for it. It included 500 min/SMS and 3GB internet.

I was indeed reffering to the SPRSI records, although I am ALSO interested
in those of the UPPEC.
Specifically in Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo County California. Is there any
was you might be willing to look for deaths in those areas in your database
for surnames simalar to: DeTerra/Terra/Reis/ReizCardoza/Cardoso

That would be very interesting.

Thanks

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge (Riviera Seca) Researcher Needed

2016-10-10 Thread 'j Bc' via Azores Genealogy
Hello,

I have broached this subject to both Rosemarie and Cheri, and am hoping that
someone might be able to lead me in the right direction.

I have a set of grandparents that died somewhere between 1911-1930 in Ribeira
Seca on Sao Jorge. (Manuel Machado Cabral and his wife Maria Joaquina)

These records obviously aren't on the CCA, and date range is too large to be
searched via standard request because the archives refuse to perform research.
I need either church records or civil records just to get the dates of death.

I have tried Joao Ventura but he is unable to do research of that nature in Sao
Jorge. Therefore, I would like to know if any of you know of anyone who might
be able to personally do research in the church at Ribeira secs or archives in
the council of calheta for civil records. If anyone is our knows anyone who is
anywhere near the area and night be able to perform the research please let me
know, as I would be happy to reimburse for such work. Further, if anyone knows
of anyone who has a personal database for Ribeira Seca post 1911 deaths please
please please notify me.

Any help at all with this depends would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Jeremy

I appreciate it greatly Linda!

*Cheri - are you able to make out the parents? I could not see filha. This

*IF it mentions Piedade or her parents how many lines down from the top is

Hello! Tonight I was able to find her death record (while looking for
another ancestor!) TOO FUNNY :-) .
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1750-1780/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1750-1780_item1/P49.html
 I
think it says she died 20 Mar 1757. (Right before that big earthquake by
the way). Am I right that she was aged 58 years? If not it looks like
5_something. For some reason I cannot make out filha. Its pretty sizable -
does anyone see who the parents are listed as? This is important since I
have not yet found their marriage or her birth. The other thing I am
trying to figure out is if anyone sees where she was born. Is it Piedade?

THANKS!

A HUGE thank you to all of of you!

I really appreciate the next marriage and the full translation Margaret! You
are amazingly generous!

I thought is was Suzana myself, but was unsure because I had not seen that one
in the azores. Interesting that Joan became Joao -- did not know that but
having looked backwards through records it makes sense because Joao fades and
Joan becomes popular.

This is now up at 5 generations part my immigrant ancestor! Thanks! Now I'll go
death and baptism hunting for them and possible siblings :-)

Hello guys!

Sorry to ask your help one last time, as I will be busy for a while with
school after this!

I have discovered a marriage record for my . grandparents from
Calheta, Calheta, Sao Jorge on the 28th of September 1778.

It is the entry on the left hand side of the following page (Antonio
Machado Cardoso and Barbara Josefa). I am having a bit of trouble with
their parents names however, so if someone could clear things up Id be
greatly appreciative.

I'm thinking the grooms parents are
- Joam Cardoso Machado ??
- Maria das Candeyas

and the bride's parents could be
- Joam Machado Cabral ??
- ___ Maria___??

These are very hard to read for me as It was just last month I started
doing such serious Azorean research, and now I have found a second
immigrant ancestor and am going crazy!

[AZORES-Genealogy] 1 more margin note... help please! :-)

2016-09-06 Thread 'j Bc' via Azores Genealogy
Hi!

Today I traced ANOTHER immigrant ancestor back to the Azores, humorously
the same exact town as my other ones!

My great uncle's baptism from 1873 has a margin note that (If I am correct)
reads something like "Died 4th of May 194_" Is it 1946? Cant tell. Looks to
end in "s" so seis?
Also I cant make out Sao Thiago which would be the chrch for Rebeira Seca,
so I would love to know where it says he died.

Because this is a minuscule entry, It might be easier to look at the image
I have posted at the second link below.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Obituaries?

2016-09-03 Thread 'j Bc' via Azores Genealogy
Hello.

It just occurred to me, as I am seeking information on a few aunts and uncles
that died in the 1930s and 1940s to ask wether or not SaO Jorge had a
newspaper? I'm sure it did, but the title would be greatly appreciated. I'm
also curious as to wether they would have some sort of death notice anyway
similar to what we would have here in the states. Furthermore if there is a
digital repositories of such a paper?!

Thanks!

Fantastic When did it become practice to add death notations into the
baptisms? I'm guessing this means they both ended up dying in Jorge Pequeno
where they were baptised?

I was hoping that it was their death dates that I was seeing - my initial
inclination...

So, I am a high school student - I have done genealogy for a number of

My grandfather Joe Machado Cardoza was born in Sao Jorge on December 27th
1871 he emigrated to CA in 1890 or 1892 dependent upon where you get the
info. (1890 is more likely) I have been trying to work DESPERATELY at
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/registos/Default.aspx hoping that
I can find him. I know his parents were:
Joe-Maunel Machado Cardoza and Maria Juaquinia/Joaquina? He also had a
brother Manuel b. 1869. I just need to use
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/registos/Default.aspx to find the
town in the azores, but am unable. I really need help - once I get that, I
can pull up all sorts of things, and start going back in the azores. Can
anyone help? Any tips as to how to bet that darn town?

Thanks so so much!

The thread with pictures was on the SS Homeland, I'll post those pictures
here and hopefully anyone interested will find them,

From what I've read there were photographers offering their services on
board the SS Homeland when it set out from Ponta Delgada on March 22 1954,
I suppose you posed for a picture then bought it if you wanted, here's one

Hello, I found this group while searching the SS Homeland and immigration,
my father was on that ship 22nd march 1954 and landed in Halifax.

My father was Antonio AC de Moraes and his family was from Ponta Delgada
and prior to that from Terceira.

My Father did some research in the Azores back in the 1990's and via
church records traced our family back to Antonio Dias Toste, born 1644 in
 S. Pedro da Ribeirinha, going forward from him to my grandfather, son of
 the son;

Manoel Martinz de Azevedo (1667-1705 S. Pedro da Ribeirinha),

Manoel Martinz de Azevedo Jr (born 1690 S. Pedro da Ribeirinha)

Then the name changes to de Moraes with his son,

Fransisco Muchado de Moraes (born 1728 Angra do Heroismo)

Joze Matheus de Moraes (born 1760 Angra do Heroismo)

Manoel Joaquim de Moraes (1788 - 1851 Angra do Heroismo)

Antonio Augusto de Moraes (1843 - 1919 Angra do Heroismo)

1898, along with her parents, Francisco and Mary Coelho, and settling in
Providence, RI. Passenger lists found on the Ancestry site for that time

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA index?

2014-01-23 Thread David J Lima
Hi Nancy,
Manuel V Maciel's father was Anthony (Antonio?) V Maciel, and his mother
was some combination of Anna Marcellina or Anna Rosa or Anna A.
His mother may also have had the surname Malaquias at some point, and she
later re-married a Manual Soares.

Manuel V Maciel's siblings and/or half-siblings were Marguerite/Mary,
Joseph Lourenco, Mary/May, Rosalind/Rosalina, and Marion F Soares. This is
confirmed in the obituaries for these siblings. It seems their idea of
sibling was casual in that they could be half-related or less (twice
widowed alternate parents).

What makes it difficult is that they were fast and loose with their names
in Gloucester, even their last names! Joseph above referred to his own last
name as Malaquias early on. I find the Marguerite above in local records as
Margaret, Mary, Maggie, Marguerite, etc. It's hard for me to know what the
real names were. I have been told by helpful archivists in Gloucester
that Portuguese immigrants didn't always understand the concept of the
mother's maiden name, so often in records a female's middle name is listed.

Either way I'm excited to find the NEPS and CCA and hope to learn my way
around.

My dream is to someday take my children to Pico and see where their
GGGParents lived.

I also have Perry in my ancestry. My maternal ggmother's maiden name
was Olivia Perry (born c. 1870); she was originally from Faial as was
my ggfather Augustus Garcia Monteiro (born March 3, 1867; he died in
the 1930s). They met and married in the Boston area, then moved to
Oakland CA in 1903. My greataunt, Olivia Monteiro, was born c. 1892
in MA. My grandfather, Augustus Perry Monteiro, was born 20 June 1895
in MA and died 28 March 1957 in Santa Clara (according to the CA death

have seen before, one would think that they would be easy to find.

My maternal grandmother's family seems to come from Flamingos, Faial.
I don't know if that's the case for my maternal grandfather.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Augustus Garcia Monteiro

2010-07-22 Thread Joan J
My ggrandfather, Augustus Garcia Monteiro, was born March 3, 1867, in
Fayal, Azores (as written on my grandfather's birth record). He
immigrated to the United States in 1885 (as given in the 1910 Census);
his original destination was the Boston area; he later moved to
Oakland, CA, in 1905. He was naturalized on February 17, 1902. He was
still alive as of April 5, 1930, when he was recorded in the 1930
Census as 62 y.o. He married Olivia Perry, who was born c. 1871 in
Fayal, Azores.  According to the 1910 Census, she immigrated in 1883;
the 1930 Census says 1879. They had two children: Augustus Perry
(June 20, 1895-May 28, 1957) and Olivia (c. 1897-?) (both were born in
Boston).

Do any of these names sound familiar?

married my brazilian great-grandmohter in Niterói - a town near Rio de

BARBARA LEITE MACHADO DOS SANTOS and he was born around 1840, 1841 -
according to his death certificate he died when he was 56, on May,

already be at Ponta Delgada, for its over 100 years anda I wrote the
chief of the Public Library and she said they would help but never
wrote back.
1- Do you people, since you have much more experience, think I should
keep on insisting?
2- Do any of you know of someone in Azores who may be interested in
exchanging information? I presently have all of my family on records
and I am willing to help searching records on Librarys and other
places here in Rio de Janeiro.
3- Is there another way to reserach (I already ordered the LDS mfs
from Nordeste, Azores) without visiting Azores? I plan to go someday
but right now is impossible.,.
If any of you need help translating documents from Portuguese to

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Victorino

2008-10-13 Thread LIONEL J HOLMES
There are a number of surnamed Vitorino, Victorino, Victorine in the Sacramento
CA area, as my funeral-notice files show.  Let me know if you'd like to see
them.

The Victorino name is also of interest in my father's family. It first appeared
as the middle name of my great grandfather Francisco Victorino de Vasconcellos,
born in Fazenda das Lages, Flores in 1798, son of Francisco Ignacio de
Vasconcellos. He was the only one of 8 siblings to carry Victorino  ( nowadays
spelled Vitorino) as a middle name. Most of his descendants (male and female)
carried it as a middle name including part of my generation. Back in the Azores
it almost became an alcunha. My first cousin Father Francisco Vitorino
Vasconcelos (now deceased) and former pastor of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in
Santa Cruz, Flores was familiarly known as Padre Vitorino by his parishiners.
The family is sometimes refered to as Os Vitorinos back on Flores. Some of my
first cousins back on Flores have Vitorino as a middle name. However, I don't
know offhand of any of the next generation which have Vitorino as a middle
name. And, as far as i know, it
was never used as a surname.
John James Vasconcelos, son of Joao Vitorino Vasconcelos

Victorina is a name I'm also interested in because my ggrandfather Joseph
Veterino was really Jose Victorino Bitencourt from Sao Jorge..I've been
researching the Baptisms recently posted for Topo and I've found lots and lots
of the name Victorino and Victorina.frequently the name is connected to
Oliveiras and Bitencourt (which I've seen spelled several different ways)in
some instances the Victorino name appears to be the surname and in others is a
middle or first name
The most interesting thing is how certain names are clustered in certain areas
with Machado being the most frequent name on Sao Jorge in all the different
areas on line to research.

I love the mystery..

Hi Elaine,
Thanks!  I went thru old info I had and found that, yes indeed, both Ritas are
the same woman, but I'm not sure where the Victorina name came from, and (so
far) that name only appears in Vencelaos death certificate.  She is Rita Maria
(de) Mendonca everywhere else.

So, my hunt continues...I will keep all posted.

Guida,

Welcome to the club where they used any name they so desired at any time they
so desired.  So it's possible they could be the same woman, especially given
the first name Rita on both.  On one of my a male relative's baptism record it
lists pai incognito BUT on his son's baptism record it lists his paternal
grandfather.  That is how I found how who the father of the male relative with
pai incognito was--somehow they were willing to admit it later on the grandsons
record?

Subj: You know your are Portuguese when or if

You Know You're Portuguese When...

- Your mother or grandmother has Maria in her name.

-You have a rooster napkin holder.

-Your father or grandfather is called Manuel, José, Antonio, or João.

-You have crocheted doilies on your kitchen counters, dining room, living room,
bedroom--on all your tables.

-You decorate your walls with plates.

-Your house is a mini church with just as may statues of saints and Jesus as
your church itself.

-You're 25 and still living with your parents. (Extra points if you're married
and living with your spouse in your parent's house)

-You baptize your child and send him to catechism even though you might never
go to church except for weddings and funerals.

-You think all university graduates should be called 'Doutor' and like to be
called so if you are one of the chosen few who have managed to finish college.

-You think that you can catch a cold with a draft or by sitting in the spring
sun. Cold drinks are also thought to bring on the dreadful 'gripe'. And don't
let anyone have a shower after eating as something terrible could happen to
them.

-You think Brazilians speak incorrect Portuguese and will not read a book
written in Brazilian Portuguese.

-You say that the Portuguese, unlike the Spanish, are good at learning foreign
languages.

-Your parents own like 9 houses in  Portugal but complain about the lack of
money in the States.

-Going to  Portugal involves buying gifts for all 500 members of your family

-You go crazy for the World Cup

-You refer to  Portugal as 'O Continent'

-You've walked in 'as paradas' longer than you can remember…carrying a flag or
as a queen

-You have grape vines in your backyard

-You earned over $10,000 for your first communion.

-To hell with the  Turkey and Roast Beef! X-mas dinner was bacalhau au braz,
baby!

-A barbeque does not consist of burgers on the grill... Hello! Can you say
sardinhas?

-A wooden spoon equals discipline, or if you ever had to duck so you wouldn't
get hit with flying shoes.

-Your parents anticipate that you'll marry your first long-term
boyfriend/girlfriend.

-When you hear the word 'Sagres' you think Beer

-Nothing beats a buttered papo-seco.

-Your 15 year old brother is allowed to have two girls sleep over, but your 19
year old sister can't go out past 7pm.

-Your grandmother tells you look sick because you are too thin.

-Your parents make you eat 3 servings of dinner at each sitting otherwise they
think you don't like the cooking.

- Last supper picture in the kitchen, usually above the door frame.

- plastic coverings on the couches.

- You call hamburgers - AMBERGA.

- Instead of garbage being called 'Lixo' it is called 'Garbicho'.

- When you pick up a relative at the airport coming from  Portugal , they
always smell like mothballs.

-You can hold more than one beer in your hand, plus a shot of Aniz

-you know and own all of Jorge Ferreira's albums

- Don't eat with money on the table it is bad luck

-the mirrors in your house are framed in gold

-Does any one in your family make wine in their garage???

-If you dip stale bread in meat juice

-If your brother and/or father work construction and your mother is a cleaner

-If you have a room in your house where everyone is forbidden to go to or be in
and the room with your first communion picture.

-In your freezer. There is some frozen linguisa or any fish

-If your house has more plants in it than outside it of it

-If you decorate your walls with plates...Tu és Português!!!

-If you know what Bacalhau or a Malassada/Filhós is

-If you spend 75% of the day cleaning...you're Portuguese!

-If you ask your mom 'mãe...what is there to eat?' and she says 'pão com
Manteiga e queijo”

-you believe that you’ll get a “gripe” if you go outside after a bath/shower

-believing that drinking milk after eating a 'figo' can kill you

-When you were young your grandma would tell you not to walk over someone’s
legs or else they wont grow
-If you have ever been hit by a 'Chinela ' or 'Fivela' or wooden spoon.

-If you grew up scared by something called 'O Velho'.

-If others tell you to stop screaming when you
