http://ghp.ics.uminho.pt  and click on
genealogy and you can search by your village or if you have lines in Sao
Jorge you can go to saojorgegenealogy.org and get lots of info: indexes,
books, military records etc.

It always astounds me how much they went back and forth between islands. I
even found some greats marrying on Terceira when the groom was from Calheta
and the bride from Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge!! Why would they take a boat to
Terceira to get married, I'll never know but it's really a question I've
asked myself.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Miguel people in Santo Amaro Sao Jorge

OK, I found a marriage for Antonio da Costa Venancio, 1874, Image #2 Santo
Amaro. He is from Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lagoa, Sao Miguel and the son
of Elias da Costa Venancio & Mariana de Jesus. Hope someone has him in
their tree!!

and have found many Sao Miguel people in the there. Here are a few:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Miguel Marriages

Hi all,
I just received this email with info about, I think, the Azores Govt.
trying to raise $$ to index all of the marriages of Sao Miguel. Would a
native speaker/reader please look at the site and tell us what is going
on?? If they are going to do the job, there is no reason to try and get
everyone else to do bits and pieces but I don't know what the plan really
is?

[AZORES-Genealogy] J. A. Freitas Library PFSA

Hi all,
Just returned from the Salt Lake City Portuguese Conference. Had a ball
and I think that everyone that attended had results in finding family!
One of the nicest things about going is learning from others and I brought
up the question of the J. A. Freitas Library of San Leandro moving.
Annabelle S. checked thru Google and found that they have moved to Modesto.

The Library is the home of the UPEC Fraternal Organization that we use all
of the time and is now the umbrella organization for ALL of the Portuguese
Fraternal societies (IDES, SES etc.). They are planning an open house on
Sat. Sep. 21st and there is more info on the website or you can call the
number. We are sincerely hoping that with the move they will have the other
membership books made available to search. Maybe even have them digitized!

I guess it happens. I've seen baptisms without the Mom's name so I guess
the Priest just got busy and forgot? The thing it, they are supposed to
write it and then confirm with the couple or at least the witnesses.
Somebody messed up. At least someone went back and put her name in the
margin but that doesn't help knowing who her parent's are though.

Just FYI, Jesse is usually the nickname for Jacintho/Jacinto (Ja not Jo). I
checked the book *Portuguese Hawaiian Memories* by Freitas and the family
is not listed. The AzoresGenWeb site is a great place to start and also the
Hawaiian website that Cheri gave to you. Since the birth was not found in
the Vital Records you need to check out the Catholic Church in their town
and try and get the baptisms of the children. If the village is listed
anywhere it may be there.

Keep checking out all the books for any area; old books, new books.
Sometimes the old books will have your guy when he is still single and he
lists his  as the beneficiaries then in the new book, he married and they
list the wife. So, if you are really lucky you can get the parent names and
perhaps the home village in the old book and then the wife in the new book!

Gordon,
I searched for my grandfather and his family for years coming in to NY. I
knew the ship, the Madonna, the date too and could not find them on the
ship manifest. Then when Ellis Island was being remodeled, I asked my Tia
(grandpa's sis) if she remembered seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
when they arrived. She said, no, we landed in Providence RI!!! 35 years of
looking in NY and there they were, coming into RI. You have to realize that
the Passenger Manifests stayed in the *Port of Entry*. So,the Madonna went
to Providence first dropped off passengers and then on to NY! Problem
solved.

Well, it gives you places to start. The Pico site can be searched in
English, just click on the British flag on the search page. The Azores docs
are in Portuguese but they follow a pattern. Go to the AzoresGenWeb site
here: http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/ and use the resources to learn how
to use the church records.

Vicenzia (Vicensia) and he's 36 and from Lages do Island of Pico. You can
go to ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias and see if you can bring up her name
and see who is listed as her husband.
Maria's parents Manuel Jose da Camara and Francisca Josefa da Motos (per
the SJ marriage index).

I checked the Sao Jorge Marriage Index and found the marriage for Joao
Severino de Sequeira and Maria Severina da Mota on 20 May 1880 Image #5 in
Urzelina. Go to Tombo.pt and navigate the Azores, Sao Jorge, Urzelina and
you will find Joao & Maria's marriage with parents listed.

Bill, the large "C" in many records is something that is peculiar to some
Priest's handwriting. I see it a lot in Norte Grande, Sao Jorge when
writing the dates. Sometimes the "C" is almost as big as the "T" in the
word and it's easy to mistake the date if you don't know which decade that
you are searching!

Donna, you will find that Joao/Joam, Sao/Sam (for Sam Jorge) and just about
any name ending in "O" can be written with an "M" in the earlier time
periods. The Priests also had a bad habit, in myh  opinion, of writing
Jorge and Jose in English--George & Jozeph/Joseph. Who knows why!

Jose, the only place I know of is the Passports for Ponta Delgada, Angra
and Horta. They sometimes will list a ship name but mostly just "Brazil" as
the place where the ship is going.

Debbie, if you haven't already downloaded the Portuguese Basic Paleography
book from the AzoresGenWeb site, do so. It really helps with the names both
given and surnames. Also, there is another glossary of words that are
similar to the Genealogical Word List but a little more condensed. Both are
a must when searching the docs and Google translate is a big help too! Good
luck and I hope you make it to SLC in June, you'll have a lot of fun and
learn a lot too!

Justin, prior to 1906 it's a guess what they were referring to. I would
take it to mean the Concelho of Ponta Delgada but you can always start in
the village of PD and work outwards.
