I did speak with her last week, and she mentioned she had 6 people waiting for
information. She said she would work on all on a first come first served basis.

Well Cheri, if she doesnt get ahold of you let me know. Maybe i can text her
and ask for a favor before she goes home from work one day. She is a very nice
lady and i doubt she would have a problem with it. Keep me posted!

Repost for Jo Mello Hartmann , joa1943 at yahoo.com

Hi! My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso Mello.
He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866! I believe he emigrated to
Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9. Records a little
shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii the family was using
Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat could just be a family
story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as was my father, Ernest
Mello in 1901!

Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..

Well, there might be something to the story as I descend from the Fragoso line
of Lagoa, however two generations down the line one son carried on with the
Fragoso name while my ancestor took on the name Meireles. His son, was first
married in Rabo de Peixe. Linda mentions Madalena carried the name Meireles
which makes me wonder if there is indeed a connection.

Oh my that is so incredibly sad :(

I have an idea.

I live in Toronto and I have a contact at the Portuguese consulate. I can try
asking him?

Please give her my contact information.

I am helping Connie Couto search for her father, Jose Ferreira De Couto, who
came to Montreal, Canada in March 1954 from Acores/Azores by ship (Sao Miguel)
to work on a farm. According to Connie, he came with a friend (she cannot
remember his friend’s name) and was on the first of two ships that came to
Canada. He was one of the first of a group of Portuguese immigrants to leave
Acores/Azores.

The plan was, that he was to come to Montreal, Canada, work on a farm, set up a
home and then send for his wife, Erania Mediros De Couto who would follow with
their two daughters. Sadly, he was killed in a hit and run accident either in
August of 1956 or 1957. Subsequently his wife never made the trip either (she
died in a car accident in Acores/Azores and is buried there) but his two
daughters, Esrisanto and Connie emigrated in 1965 with their aunt.

They never found out where he was buried or what really happened to him. They
know it was in Montreal but do not know where. Connie (she is now 62) is the
only remaining living family member and would love to know what really happened
to her father, Jose and where he is buried in Montreal so she may visit his
grave. She would like to know as much about his (short-lived) life here in
Canada. She now resides in Toronto with her family.

Any pictures or information you could provide would be most welcome.

Sincerely,

Kelley O’Rourke,

Hi Manoel Cesar Furtado,

We might be 4th Cousins listed in Family Finder, but Antonio da Costa Furtado
was my Great Great Grandfather and Father to Manuel Da Costa Furtado who was
born in 1883, so I don't think it is possible that Antonio Da Costa Vieira is
the same person you think he is. I appreciate the help very much and I am sure
there is a connection somewhere, I am not familiar with any relatives in Brasil
but it could be that either my Great Grandfather Manuel Da Costa Furtado had
siblings that went there.

I've been searching through various guides about Portuguese naming practices,
but I haven't found anything related to this question.

My mother-in-law is a Parreira, but she has mentioned that it is common for
families to have nicknames. For example, someone by the name of Antonio
Parreira may be known as a 'Galante' yet the surname 'Galante' is no where to
be found. Other nicknames I've come across are what appear to be 'rrabola' and
'Ilhars'.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Maria da Trindade died at 22 therefore was born around 1861 parents Luis
Pereira Lopes and Maria de Jesus

the second Luis Pereira Lopes married to Maria Luiza /do Rego/ or Maria Candida
do Rego they were married on 16 Sep 1861 ( as per Diana Silva on this group). I
have them with 6 children born 1863 to 1877

My conclusion is that they are not the same Luis. possibly the first is an
uncle of the second

The reason I asked is I have records for Luiz Pereira Lopes being married and
having four children with Maria Candida do Rego I have the documents confirming
these. One girl and three boys, the girls name was Elvira (born 1867) and
supposed to be the oldest and committed suicide. I am looking for her dead
record when I came across this record.
I know Luiz Pereira Lopes remarried after the death of Maria Candida do Rego.
Was wondering if maybe Maria de Jesus was this wife or if maybe Luiz was
married before Maria Candida do Rego.

Maria
I have documents of baptism for five children of Luiz Pereira Lopes 1834-1927
to Maria Candida Do Rego

Maria Trindade 1861-1883
Maria born 12 oct 1863
F elicida Augusta born 31 Dec 1865
Elvira 1867 born 21 Sep 1867
Luiz 1870-1943 born 5 Jul 1870
Joao 1873 - born 17 Aug 1873
Jose 1877-1969- born 5 Feb 1877

The record for Maria Trindade show Maria Candida do Rego as the mother. I am
believing Maria de Jesus is the woman he married when Maria Candida do Rego
died. I am looking for the records to support this.
I still haven't checked the baptism record from 1862-1866 for any other
children.
Maria do you read portuguese? I can send you the records I have.

They all came in through Rhode Island and settled in New Bedford. Some stayed

This list will be 7 years old on the 27th! The first post was on the 28th. I
can't believe this has been going on 7 years already!

Today, our 1000th member signed up! There are 1000 email addresses subscribed
to his list now. Seven years ago, I thought I would wind up with 300 or maybe
350 members. As those numbers approached, I thought maybe 500 would be it. I'm
amazed at the number of people doing Azorean genealogy.

May the list, our web site at Azores Gen Web, and especially the spirit of
helping among our members continue for more years to come!

Hi Ed,

I started a new thread so it can be followed easier.

It sounds like the information you need is the marriage of your
great-grandparents Antonio da Costa and Maria Rosa Isabel. If your information
is correct about Lagoa then you need to search the marriage records in that
location. The two churches are Santa Cruz which is the Matriz or mother church
and Nossa Senhora das Necessidades a newer and smaller church. The film from
the family history center is Marriages for Santa Cruz #1438008 which has the
marriage records from 1555 – 1870. I would start at the very end of the film
and work back based on the fact that Jose da Costa was born on 15 Jun 1870. If
he was the first child then you should be able to find the marriage record
fairly easily.

I do not have the information on NS Necessidades so I am not sure what years
their records cover perhaps someone else on the list knows but I would look on
that film only if I did not find them on the one above.

But wait I just remembered Logoa is on the CCA website Check this record out
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869/SMLAGSTCC1860-1869_item1/P108.html
The brides name is off a little but I think it is your great-grandparents. I
will let others weigh in on this. The marriage date is 4 Jun 1867.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help looking for Grandparants Lagoa, Sao Miguel

1500 marriages compiled from 1784 -1828. There are some marriages I do not have

marriages from Santissimo Salvador in Ribeirinha Sao Miguel for the years 1836

There are other members on this list that also have extensive data perhaps this

She is my great great grandmother Ana Candida dos Santos' sister.

Yes, there is Luiz as a surname in the family.  Francisca Pereira born on Mar

wrote:

Hi everyone. Once again I am posting about a family I have mentioned
previously but with new information behind me, which has, as always, brought
new questions. I will give some background information first to leave out any
room for error.

My great great grandmother was Maria da Resureicao d'Andrade. Since this branch
was estranged from my family, all of my information on them is from my own
research.

I can confirm that she was born 2 Apr 1888 from her SSDI record; I can confirm
the death is hers from the obituary I found. From this information, I learned
that she was born in Lagoa, SM, and her father's name was Antone (Antonio)
Andrade and her mother was Mary Rose Moniz. Incidentally, Maria R.'s eventual
mother in law was named Rosalina. It is that fact that gives me reason to
believe that confusion may have occurred.

With the help of Maria Moore from the list, I located a baptismo in Rosario,
Lagoa, SM for a Maria born 2 Apr 1888 to Antonio d'Andrade Caggarinho and Maria
Jose. Although Jose is very different in sound from Rose, they are only one
letter off; I believe that there was a mistake, somewhere along the line, and
Jose may have been misread by someone having Rosalina in mind, possibly a
grandchild who had never known their grandparents who remained in the Azores.
This is only my theory.

What the theory does not explain, though is the Moniz surname. The earliest
record I have of Moniz is Maria Resureicao's marriage record, where her mother
is listed as Maria Moniz and her mother-in-law as Rosa Luiz.

I have traced the family four to five generations back into the Azores, and
this is Maria Jose Moniz's lineage:

Maria Jose born 15 Apr 1853 to Manuel de Botelho and Elena do Espirito Santo.

Manuel de Botelho was the son of Joze Botelho and Luzia Ignacia, the paternal
grandson of Joze Botelho and Secilia Medeiros, and the maternal grandson of
Estevao da Ponte and Jozefa Pacheca.

Elena do Espirito Santo was the daughter of Antonio Jacinto (no surname, just
Jacinto) and Maria dos Santos, the paternal granddaughter of Joao Bento and
Francisco Pereira, and the maternal granddaughter of Antonio Fereira and
Thereza dos Santos.

Nowhere in  the lineage is a Moniz (or a Luiz, though I'm pretty sure that has
nothing to do with the family) and I am wondering where it may have come from.
I am wondering if Maria Jose's father Manuel Botelho may have become Manuel
Botelho Moniz at some point in his life, but I have two of his casamentos and
he is just Botelho on both. I haven't been able to find his obito yet; he was
born in 1797 in Agua do Pau, so I think the records are available for me to
look online.

I wanted to post about this first, though; does anyone else have any mysterious
names like I do, or did I have a mistake in my research and this family is not
even mine? I have been extra careful about that with this family since I had so
little information of my own, so I hope that's not the case!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The name Ezaltina

2010-09-10 Thread danandmaria

Most Azorean girls had a double name with Maria being the first followed by a
Saint's name, or some other religious application of the name Mary. Examples
are Mary of the Angels, Mary of the Conception, Mary of the
Resurrection.  In many cases, Maria was not used, but the second name was
used. Example: dos Anjos, or Conceicao, or Goreti.

It wouldn't be surprising that you wouldn't hear Maria within the family. You
typically heard the second name. Luisa or Evangelina were my aunts, but all
had the first name Maria.

Same as my family from Sao Miguel, but my mother's aunt's name was Saltina. I
just know if they had Mary or Maria as a name, it seems they were nicknamed
like Marquinas or what they did for work. I know it was calling them Tia or
Madringha (Godmother) or Prima or Vavao. I never even heard Maria within the
family. My immediate cousins had different names, none were Mary or Maria so I
think they did start using other names; Dulce, Guiomar, Lubelia, Annabella,
Grace, Louisa, etc.

My grandmother had a cousin named Cizaltina, that's along the same lines as
Ezaltina.  She would have been born in the early 1900s as well.  I don't know
the origins of the name, but they were also from Sao Miguel.  My grandmothers
family also had the tradition of naming all the girls Maria something or
other.  My grandmother did not get named Maria because she was born in
Massachusetts and her sisters had problems at school with the similar names.
As far as I know, her cousin Cizaltina did not have Maria attached to it.  The
use of Maria before any name is pure choice of the parents.

Well, Ezaltina was my mother's middle name and she was born on Sao
Miguel in the 1920's. (my grandparents did have very creative names
for their girls.) Supposedly my grandfather had seen my mother's
name, Ligia in a book he read, not sure where he came up with Ezaltina

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows what the name Ezaltina

Just in case, I'm not 100% sure this is actually a Portuguese name. I
recently found a previously unknown child who died at one month of my
great great grandparents, Manuel J Medeiros Quarenta and Filomena Gloria
Rego. The baby was Ezaltina. The baby was born in 1909 after the parents
had been in America for three years, so maybe they heard the name over
here? I searched the group and only found one mention of an Ezaltina
born on one of the islands.

Ironically, she was the first and only (so far) girl they had not named
 Maria.

I was wondering, if anyone is familiar with this name, is it usually a
stand alone, or does it follow Maria i.e. Maria Ezaltina. Obviously,
anything is possible, but I just found it funny that this family with
their eight daughters named Maria would change their minds.

I'm not recognizing the names I'm seeing. I don't know if they're just ones I'm

Hi Linda,

My Furtado surname came from Ana Furtado, from Ponta Garça, and then also
from Maria Furtado from Vila Franca do Campo d. of Manuel Correia and
Margarida Furtado who is a common ancestor that I share with Cheri Mello and
probably with many other cousins on the list.

Ana Furtado, m. to Francisco da Costa sapateiro, was daughter of Ana Furtado
and Antonio da Costa Salgado, and grand-daughter of Aleixo Furtado and Maria
Curvelo, all of them from Ponta Garça.
Aleixo Furtado was probably born around 1580 – 1600, and I only could
realize that he was my oldest known ancestor carrying down the surname
Furtado due to the notarial records of Vila Franca do Campo since the
marriage records of Ponta Garça before 1690 or so are all lost.
On 25 sep 1668 Ana Furtado and her husband Antonio da Costa Salgado sold a
real state ( 3 alqueires) that she had received as dowry from her parents
Aleixo Furtado and Maria Curvelo.

That´s how it goes:

Aleixo Furtado m. to Maria Curvelo (from Ponta Garça) / Ana Furtado m. to
Antonio da Costa Salgado / Ana Furtado m. to Francisco da Costa sapateiro /
Maria Furtado m. to Mateus de Sousa / Vicente Furtado m. to Ana Furtado
(ggdaughter of Margarida Furtado from Vila
Franca)
/
José Furtado [de Sousa] m. to Rita de Jesus [Vieira]

And so on... up to me, here in Brazil!!

Hi group. I've seen the Costa Galego surname very often in my
research, but it wasn't until recently that I found my own connection to
it. I wanted to find out who else was researching this surname.

I have Andre da Costa Galego married in 1753 to Antonia do Rego Baldaia). Their
daughter was Jozefa do Rego.

Andre's parents were Manoel da Costa Galego and Barbara da Payva.
(Antonia's were Francisco C(?) do Rego

Francisco /Pacheco da Fonseca/

and Maria do Rego) Baldaia and Maria do Rego) Baldaia

I think Celest and Hermano have researched these names.  I also have some info
I will send it to you.

This is all the information I have at the moment but I thought maybe it
was far enough back to connect with someone. Thanks!

Dear List members,

If while any of you are searching the  baptism records for Santa Cruz ,
Lagoa ,Sao Miguel and you see the name Pedro de REGO [ Peter Rego] would you
please let me know what the record says?

I have been searching for the names of his parents to no avail.

I have the following from various records here in the states.
His draft Reg Card New Bedford, MA states he was b. 10 Jan 1874. His name on
this record Pedro do REGO.
A conversation with the priest at Our lady of Mt Carmel, New Bedford, MA
confirms his birth as recorded on his son John's baptism record as  Santa
Cruz, Lagoa, Sao Miguel. His parents name not listed.
He emigrated in 1895 and was naturalized in 1904 according to the 1920
census New Bedford, MA.
The Naturalization records  on Ancestry.com shows he was naturalized 25 June
1905. He was living in Fall River at the time. It also confirms his date of
birth as 10 Jan 1874. It does not give his date of arrival.
His death record 21 Oct 1942 New Bedford, mA., states -names of father
mother CANNOT be learned.

I have his marriage date and the information on all his children.

Unfortunately I DO NOT read Portuguese and current problems with my eyesight
makes it even more difficult to try to read the records now available from
Lagoa that are on line.
Should anyone run across this name I would very much appreciate knowing what
the record says.

Thank you

This is not much to go on, but for now, it is all I have thus far.

According to his obit, Manuel F. Perry, Jr. b. abt. 1905 Lagoa, Sao
Miguel d. 1987 Fairhaven MA.  He married a Virginia Souza in the US.
His parents are listed as Manuel F. Perry and Mary Rosario Ventura,
both probably born abt. 1880.  The parents came to the US in 1910 with
their children Manuel, Joseph and John according to census records.
Their first child, Charles, was born in US was born in  New Bedford MA
in Jan. 1912, then Mary Lucy, and Virginio in 1916.  I have the
family in 1920 and 1930 census records.  I am trying to find their
ship's manifest and where exactly in Sao Miguel parents came from.  I
am also trying to find death records (so I can get obits, of course)
for parents probably in the New Bedford area. I have birthdates for
children b. in US.  Do NEGHS records go to 1915 now?  as a couple of
these kids were born between 1910-1915 and that might give me more
info other than Azores of where the parents were born.

Anyone related to this family?
Thanks

Anyone related to this family?

Jesse, I got that but as you go throught the alphabet the numbers are not
straight sequential but jump from 100 to 110 and then 114 etc. I thought
maybe they might be the pages. There are no numbers on the individuala
baptisms so I can't figure out what they could be other than page numbers!!
Good luck on trying to figure it out. If you do, let us on the list know. I
have someone that is searching in Lisbon and it would help to know what the
numbers mean.

Thank you for the reply Rosemarie. Unfortunately, I believe the numbers
must mean something else. I tried this on a few different names, as the
book's pages ARE numbered, but this doesn't work. I guess it makes sense
though. The names are semi-alphabetically listed it looks like, and the
numbers increase with them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy]Portuguese wine

2010-06-28 Thread danandmaria

It is a dessert liqueur.  Not wine.

As for Azorean table wines, there is one from Pico called Basalto that is a
very nice red. Otherwise, seek wines from the mainland (Douro, Alentejo, Dao
regions).

Summer is ideal for vinhos verdes. Some are produced rather cheaply and
over-carbonated (Gatao, Lagosta, and Mateus are in this category). Really nice
one, not expensive, served very cold is Casal Garcia. Probably the best quality
vinho verde is Palacio da Brejoeira. You'll pay a little more but it is great
quality.

Here in Nashville, it has taken us a while to educate various wine stores to
get these wines in but they are finally catching on and everyone is happier.

Feijoada is a stew of beans with beef and pork , which is a typical Portuguese
dish, also typical in Brazil , Angola and other former Portuguese colonies . In
Brazil, feijoada is considered the national dish , which was brought to South

Portuguese regions of Beira , Estremadura , and Trás-os-Montes . [ 1 ]

The name comes from feijão , Portuguese for beans, and is pronounced

Actually Cindy, fejoada is Afro Brazillian in origin. When the slave masters
killed pigs, they saved the chops and the pork roasts (all the good cuts) for
themselves and gave the inards, pigs feet, ears, etc to their slaves.  The
slaves embelished the stew with black beans, etc. If you go to an up scale
Brazillian Restaurant, you will find the fejoada further embelished with
linguica, etc. In some upscale restaurants in Brazil they will even serve pork
chops on the side, a far cry from what the black slaves originally had. My late
wife was Brazillian and filled me in on all this history of fejoada.

Besides the variations in the spelling, sometimes there are also mistakes. In
my program (and possibly in yours) there is also known as and there I put the
variation or mistaken name and the year found as such.  You can also put it in
the notes for that person. That has helped me with verifying  or confirming

Hi

I was wondering if there was a general consensus on what to do with
names with variations/different spellings (this is almost all of them!).
For example, I have a Helena in my tree and I also have an Elena. I know
these are technically the same name but the spellings have been
different. Do these spellings reflect the priest who wrote the records
or how the people in question actually wanted their name spelled? If it
is all based on the priest I will start adopting standardized spellings
for the sake of organization. Just looking for some opinions/information
on this! Thanks!

Hi Robin,

As I read it and hopefully others will correct any mistakes:

On the 3rd of January, 1861, at 12 at night, in house # 364, died ,Gaspar,
whose age is uncertain but around 3 1/2months or more. (here it gets a bit
unclear)..he's an exposto and the next word is either given to the care of
Anna Custodia Candida,  wife of Jose da Roch de Borba of this freguesia and on
this day at 3 in the afternoon is buried in the cemetary of this parish.the
rest is the usual conclusion.

Perhaps this helps and others can clear up the exposto  intrigue part...it
could be entre quebut that doesn't make sense.

Regards,
Nancy

I've found a death document related to my Borba side of the family and am
wondering if someone can help me translate it?  It's the first document on the
left hand side of the page at the link below.  It speak of my randparents
Custodia Candida and Jose da Rocha de Borba.

http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/TAHSBARTO1860-1869/TAHSBARTO1860-1869_item1/P8.html

Here's what I have found on the CCA site for their marriage:

1849 Page 64 St. Bartholomew Indices of Marriage, so it appears they were
married in 1949 and one dies in 1861?  I do know one of their children was my
GGGrandfather of the same name, Jose da Rocha de Borba born in 1850, St.
Bartholomew of which I have a baptism certificate.

Other than this one child, I don't know of any others.

Thank you for your help!

Hello all. I hope everyone had a great, lovefilled Easter.

I am requesting some fresh ideas on a possible surname change of one of my
ancestors.

My ggg grandmother's brother, Manuel da Costa Galante, from Lagoa, N.S.
immigrated with his new bride to Hawaii in 1884 upon the ALBERGELDIE(think
thats right). His passport along with information from a book Ms. Shirley has
stated his whole name as that which is above.
Now my problem is I have searched all the subsequent census records up to 1910
in Hawaii, and I can not find any one with that last name, Galante. Does anyone
have any ideas of an alternative spelling of the last name, or maybe if it
would be usual for one to drop the last name and just go by da Costa??
Any suggestions and / or ideas would be appreciated.

Has anyone found out if the Cabral Surname was tied to Royalty or not?
Iris
According to many genealogical sources, the Velho Cabrals of the Azores,
i.e., the descendants of the siblings of the discoverer Gonçalo Velho Cabral
(who did not have any children) descend through the Cabral line from Afonso III
and his Moorish concubine, Madragana ben Bekar. There are other sources that
dispute those claims.

There are other royal Azorean lines, e.g.,:

The descendants of Garcia Rodrigues Camelo and Leonor Soeira, descends from D.
Afonso III and the Moorish concubine.

The descendants of Maria Coutinho (d. 1667) and Manuel da Câmara Sá, descend
from Pedro I and Inês de Castro.

The descendants of D. Jorge Gonçalves Pereira and Guiomar Fernandes da Silva
descend from D. Fernando I.

There are many other families in the Azores that have royal ancestors. The
trick is to be able to go back far enough in your research to an ancestor who
has been thoroughly researched by a reputable genealogist or historian and then
to have access to that work. Otherwise it will be very slow going with many
detours into unreliable, oftentimes discredited sources.

I have a large file of Lagoa families.

If I understand correctly this is your Great Grandfather Francisco Raposo also

Can you give a little more details such as his birthdate, did he marry in

Are your Cabral and Botelho also from Lagoa?

Hello,
From what I can find my rapoza's wife was Mary or Maria Dos Rosario. My great
grandfather, Francisco Rapoza, has listed on his ssdi as his mother's last
name as Galante. But I found her passport on the BYU site along with my
Joao Rapoza as Dos Rosario. They immigrated from Lagoa in 1883 to Hawaii.I am
truely not sure what her last name was
Oh wait, maybe this will help.
My Uncle once told me that Joao was apparently very cruel especially to
animals, and Maria was raising some horses or involved in horses in Hawaii, and
Joao was murdered by a fellow farm or ranch hand for beating a horse. sometime
between 1909 and 1915 In Hawaii.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.I Could give you the names of my
Cabrals Botelhos etc if you wish.
Thank you,

Hello.
I am interested in learning more about this line of ancestry, the Raposo. Was
there a different way that your ancestors spelled that last name? my paternal
Grandmother's Grandfather was Joao Rapoza, but I found that somewhere along the
way the spelling has been changed to Raposo, Raposa, Repoza,  Repozo, Reposa.
I know that my Ggg grandfather, Joao, immigrated to Hawaii from the Azores.
Any information on the Raposo last name would be appreciated.
In this particular ancestrial lineage I have the following surnames:
Arruda, Cabral, Costa, DeCosta,DeLima,Pereira,Botelho,Crua,Andrade,Carvalho,Dos
Rosario,Mederios, etc.

Any help on researching this line would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

My dear friend and possibly cousin (never made the connection), Elizabeth
McDonald had sent me a couple of years ago her family time line. I'm not sure
if she is on this group any longer, but she goes back to Jose Raposo m.
Francisca Ignacia Pereira (daughter of Jose-Jacintho Pereira and Maria Augusta)
from Maia, Sao Miguel abt. 1847. Two children brought down 17 grandchildren.
Son, Joao Raposo-Pereira m. Francisca-Julia da Ponte Ramalho and daughter,
Rosa-Ignacia da Conceicao m. Manoel Raposo- Pereira (kept it in the family).
Maybe there is a connection coming down to those Raposo's.

Linda Borges (Furtado) Furtado

Marcos and John,

I came across a Thome Rapozo marriage date 11-July-1736.  The record says he
is a widower of Maria do Nascimento and that he's marrying Victoria de Mello.

I'm attaching the jpg for you to take a look.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Physical Research In/Around Dartmouth?

Hey all,

I'm finally coming up on my student teaching semester and should
graduate this coming Spring. I am currently considering taking the
Intensive Portuguese summer course at UMASS Darthmouth. I figure since
that lasts for 5 weeks or so, I'll probably have some time to go
around and do some physical searching for info. Both sets of my
Portuguese G-Grandparents came in through New Bedford and I believe
one set remained there, and the other moved around a bit into
Dartmouth and possibly Fall River (I'm not sure why that name comes to
mind at the moment.)

The only thing is, I have no idea how I'll get anywhere without a car.
I don't know how cities are situated up there, do they all just kind
of butt up together? I live in a county where we have a lot of
unincorporated areas between the cities (for example the school I'm
teaching in is 34 miles away from my home...but Hillsborough County
(Tampa Bay area) is pretty spread out. I have no idea what to expect
in MA.

Aside from that, what key places should I go to? What kind of info
should I look for? Seeing as I'm in Florida, I've only ever done
online research. Hands on stuff is completely new to me.

And I suppose if it turns out that I can't make it to the summer
program, I'll get around to hiring someone else to do the legwork for
me. I have a quickly aging great aunt who would love to know more
about her history.

Do you have a date for your Great Grandmothers birth?  I have copies of the
birth registration book for that year.  Who was your great grandfather?  was he
from the Lagoa?  What was his name and date of birth...etc. etc.

Any other info you might have would help,  such as date of birth of sibblings.
I have many do Rego Vital but need a little more info to see if they are

Charlelne,
In the early records, the name of the church was important for me. Some of the
villages had more than one church. My first visit to the Azores, I asked for
the oldest church in Lagoa, Sao Miguel. I was told it was Santa (something I
can't remember right now). I spent the time looking for my husband's ancestor
in the books for that church. I did not find the ancestor.
Upon my return to Sao Miguel (I was getting better at asking the questions that
would give me the answers I needed) I asked how much newer the other church
was. I was told they were about the same age. When I looked at the books for
the slightly newer church I found the ancestors.
From that experience, I have always included the church in my file. I think of
the church as the location, area, where the person was born and lived. Most of
the time (nothing is always) a newborn was baptized in the church where the
parents lived. Rosario in Lagoa, Sao Miguel, was the place I found ancestors
(the church was Nossa Senhora do Rosario).
Sorry for the confusion. Celeste, Hayward, CA

Celeste, I do not understand your post. I had meant to say that I was
going to leave the village, just leave off the Church District of the
village as there is not enough room for both. Are you saying that this
can cause problems in trying to match? I do not understand how if one
states the village and the island.
