I believe he emigrated to Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9. Records a little shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii the family was using Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat could just be a family story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as was my father, Ernest Mello in 1901! Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores.. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores . According to Connie, he came with a friend (she cannot remember his friend’s name) and was on the first of two ships that came to Canada. He was one of the first of a group of Portuguese immigrants to leave Acores/Azores. The plan was, that he was to come to Montreal, Canada, work on a farm, set up a home and then send for his wife, Erania Mediros De Couto who would follow with their two daughters. Sadly, he was killed in a hit and run accident either in August of 1956 or 1957. Subsequently his wife never made the trip either (she died in a car accident in Acores/Azores and is buried there) but his two daughters, Esrisanto and Connie emigrated in 1965 with their aunt. They never found out where he was buried or what really happened to him. They know it was in Montreal but do not know where. Connie (she is now 62) is the only remaining living family member and would love to know what really happened to her father, Jose and where he is buried in Montreal so she may visit his grave. She would like to know as much about his (short-lived) life here in Canada. She now resides in Toronto with her family. Any pictures or information you could provide would be most welcome. Margaret Vicente On Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 6:45 PM, Jesse Pacheco pacheco.jess...@gmail.com wrote: Hi everyone. Once again I am posting about a family I have mentioned previously but with new information behind me, which has, as always, brought new questions. I will give some background information first to leave out any room for error. My great great grandmother was Maria da Resureicao d'Andrade. Since this branch was estranged from my family, all of my information on them is from my own research. I can confirm that she was born 2 Apr 1888 from her SSDI record; I can confirm the death is hers from the obituary I found. From this information, I learned that she was born in Lagoa, SM, and her father's name was Antone (Antonio) Andrade and her mother was Mary Rose Moniz. Incidentally, Maria R.'s eventual mother in law was named Rosalina. It is that fact that gives me reason to believe that confusion may have occurred. With the help of Maria Moore from the list, I located a baptismo in Rosario, Lagoa, SM for a Maria born 2 Apr 1888 to Antonio d'Andrade Caggarinho and Maria Jose. Although Jose is very different in sound from Rose, they are only one letter off; I believe that there was a mistake, somewhere along the line, and Jose may have been misread by someone having Rosalina in mind, possibly a grandchild who had never known their grandparents who remained in the Azores. This is only my theory. What the theory does not explain, though is the Moniz surname. The earliest record I have of Moniz is Maria Resureicao's marriage record, where her mother is listed as Maria Moniz and her mother-in-law as Rosa Luiz. I have traced the family four to five generations back into the Azores, and this is Maria Jose Moniz's lineage: Maria Jose born 15 Apr 1853 to Manuel de Botelho and Elena do Espirito Santo. Manuel de Botelho was the son of Joze Botelho and Luzia Ignacia, the paternal grandson of Joze Botelho and Secilia Medeiros, and the maternal grandson of Estevao da Ponte and Jozefa Pacheca. Elena do Espirito Santo was the daughter of Antonio Jacinto (no surname, just Jacinto) and Maria dos Santos, the paternal granddaughter of Joao Bento and Francisco Pereira, and the maternal granddaughter of Antonio Fereira and Thereza dos Santos. Nowhere in the lineage is a Moniz (or a Luiz, though I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with the family) and I am wondering where it may have come from. I am wondering if Maria Jose's father Manuel Botelho may have become Manuel Botelho Moniz at some point in his life, but I have two of his casamentos and he is just Botelho on both. I haven't been able to find his obito yet; he was born in 1797 in Agua do Pau, so I think the records are available for me to look online. I wanted to post about this first, though; does anyone else have any mysterious names like I do, or did I have a mistake in my research and this family is not even mine? I have been extra careful about that with this family since I had so little information of my own, so I hope that's not the case! -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com . Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The name Ezaltina
Most Azorean girls had a double name with Maria being the first followed by a Saint's name, or some other religious application of the name Mary. Examples are Mary of the Angels, Mary of the Conception, Mary of the Resurrection. In many cases, Maria was not used, but the second name was used. Example: dos Anjos, or Conceicao, or Goreti. It wouldn't be surprising that you wouldn't hear Maria within the family. You typically heard the second name. Luisa or Evangelina were my aunts, but all had the first name Maria. I never even heard Maria within the family. My grandmothers family also had the tradition of naming all the girls Maria something or other. My grandmother did not get named Maria because she was born in Massachusetts and her sisters had problems at school with the similar names. Just in case, I'm not 100% sure this is actually a Portuguese name. I recently found a previously unknown child who died at one month of my great great grandparents, Manuel J Medeiros Quarenta and Filomena Gloria Rego. The baby was Ezaltina. The baby was born in 1909 after the parents had been in America for three years, so maybe they heard the name over here? I searched the group and only found one mention of an Ezaltina born on one of the islands. Ironically, she was the first and only (so far) girl they had not named Maria. I was wondering, if anyone is familiar with this name, is it usually a stand alone, or does it follow Maria i.e. Maria Ezaltina. Obviously, anything is possible, but I just found it funny that this family with their eight daughters named Maria would change their minds. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com . Sant Cruz Lagoa 10 January 1874 Dear List members, If while any of you are searching the baptism records for Santa Cruz , Lagoa ,Sao Miguel and you see the name Pedro de REGO [ Peter Rego] would you please let me know what the record says? I have been searching for the names of his parents to no avail. I have the following from various records here in the states. His draft Reg Card New Bedford, MA states he was b. 10 Jan 1874. His name on this record Pedro do REGO. A conversation with the priest at Our lady of Mt Carmel, New Bedford, MA confirms his birth as recorded on his son John's baptism record as Santa Cruz, Lagoa, Sao Miguel. His parents name not listed. He emigrated in 1895 and was naturalized in 1904 according to the 1920 census New Bedford, MA. The Naturalization records on Ancestry.com shows he was naturalized 25 June 1905. He was living in Fall River at the time. It also confirms his date of birth as 10 Jan 1874. It does not give his date of arrival. His death record 21 Oct 1942 New Bedford, mA., states -names of father mother CANNOT be learned. I have his marriage date and the information on all his children. Unfortunately I DO NOT read Portuguese and current problems with my eyesight makes it even more difficult to try to read the records now available from Lagoa that are on line. Should anyone run across this name I would very much appreciate knowing what the record says. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy]Portuguese wine
It is a dessert liqueur. Not wine. As for Azorean table wines, there is one from Pico called Basalto that is a very nice red. Otherwise, seek wines from the mainland (Douro, Alentejo, Dao regions). Summer is ideal for vinhos verdes. Some are produced rather cheaply and over-carbonated (Gatao, Lagosta, and Mateus are in this category). Really nice one, not expensive, served very cold is Casal Garcia. Probably the best quality vinho verde is Palacio da Brejoeira. You'll pay a little more but it is great quality. Here in Nashville, it has taken us a while to educate various wine stores to get these wines in but they are finally catching on and everyone is happier. Feijoada is a stew of beans with beef and pork , which is a typical Portuguese dish, also typical in Brazil , Angola and other former Portuguese colonies . In Brazil, feijoada is considered the national dish , which was brought to South America by the Portuguese, based in ancient Feijoada recipes from the Portuguese regions of Beira , Estremadura , and Trás-os-Montes . When the slave masters killed pigs, they saved the chops and the pork roasts (all the good cuts) for themselves and gave the inards, pigs feet, ears, etc to their slaves. The slaves embelished the stew with black beans, etc. If you go to an up scale Brazillian Restaurant, you will find the fejoada further embelished with linguica, etc. In some upscale restaurants in Brazil they will even serve pork chops on the side, a far cry from what the black slaves originally had. Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2010 00:16:31 -0500 Hello all. I hope everyone had a great, lovefilled Easter. I am requesting some fresh ideas on a possible surname change of one of my ancestors. My ggg grandmother's brother, Manuel da Costa Galante, from Lagoa, N.S. immigrated with his new bride to Hawaii in 1884 upon the ALBERGELDIE(think thats right). His passport along with information from a book Ms. Shirley has stated his whole name as that which is above. Now my problem is I have searched all the subsequent census records up to 1910 in Hawaii, and I can not find any one with that last name, Galante. Does anyone have any ideas of an alternative spelling of the last name, or maybe if it would be usual for one to drop the last name and just go by da Costa?? Iris According to many genealogical sources, the Velho Cabrals of the Azores, i.e., the descendants of the siblings of the discoverer Gonçalo Velho Cabral (who did not have any children) descend through the Cabral line from Afonso III and his Moorish concubine, Madragana ben Bekar. There are other sources that dispute those claims. There are other royal Azorean lines, e.g.,: The descendants of Garcia Rodrigues Camelo and Leonor Soeira, descends from D. Afonso III and the Moorish concubine. The descendants of Maria Coutinho (d. 1667) and Manuel da Câmara Sá, descend from Pedro I and Inês de Castro. The descendants of D. Jorge Gonçalves Pereira and Guiomar Fernandes da Silva descend from D. Fernando I. There are many other families in the Azores that have royal ancestors. The trick is to be able to go back far enough in your research to an ancestor who has been thoroughly researched by a reputable genealogist or historian and then to have access to that work. Otherwise it will be very slow going with many detours into unreliable, oftentimes discredited sources. -- For more options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Jacinto do Rego Vital and Maria Isabelle Cabral had 5 daughters. My great grandmother Alexandria Alice Texeira nee Vital (born 1907 died 1989), I remember her sister Francelina (born 1904 not sure when she died but some time in the 1980's?) she came to the bay area with Alexandria and her mother Maria Isabelle by way of New York in about 1911, I guess Jacinto was already in the bay area because he was a whaler. I know she had three other sisters Maria, Sofia and Louisa. Either they were not close to my Great Grandmother or they never immigrated I don't know. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Some of the villages had more than one church. My first visit to the Azores, I asked for the oldest church in Lagoa, Sao Miguel. I was told it was Santa (something I can't remember right now). I spent the time looking for my husband's ancestor in the books for that church. I did not find the ancestor. Upon my return to Sao Miguel (I was getting better at asking the questions that would give me the answers I needed) I asked how much newer the other church was. I was told they were about the same age. When I looked at the books for the slightly newer church I found the ancestors. From that experience, I have always included the church in my file. I think of the church as the location, area, where the person was born and lived. Most of the time (nothing is always) a newborn was baptized in the church where the parents lived. Rosario in Lagoa, Sao Miguel, was the place I found ancestors (the church was Nossa Senhora do Rosario). Sorry for the confusion.
