Re: [Blind-Computing] Gmail where is select all and conversation check boxes?
Hi all, I am using Jaws 13 XP Pro IE8 and going to www.gmail.com for email. Many messages are still in my in box and I am trying to delete messages. I go to search edit box and type in:inbox is:unread a huge list of unread messages are listed. According to GMail help and other sources on web I should be able to check select all and then select all conversations to delete all these messages at once. Unfortunately I cannot find the check boxes for select all or conversation. Any ideas? I went into standard display and html display and no luck. I went through the menus and did not see anything helpful. So any suggestions appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] Connecting printer
Hi all, Well a fresh morning start and a cup of coffee helped me to resolve printer problem. I deleted the extra HP1006(copy1) and I think made the other HP1006 the default printer by going to control panel, printers and faxes highlight HP1006 and pressed application key and entered on default printer. When I deleted the other HP1006 printer it made MS the default printer. Honestly did not know what I was doing but I think I resolved the problem. I hope so. Thanks for any help. Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws13 officially released
Thanks so much. I just used keyboard convenient scanning combination when I was on web. I did download the FTB OCR and ran it but unsure where it installed but when I went into start, programs, j for Jaws 13 folder these are options: Explore JAWS Tools Braille Viewer Help JAWS Run HJPad These 2 files are in my download folder J13.0.303-32bit.exe FSOmniPage.msi but I ran the J13.exe and checked for updates before downloading and running FSOmniPage.msi So if I am on desktop and use the insert+spaceBar then o then s it should work if installed correctly regardless if connected to web? Well the scanning just worked on my desktop so I guess my installation is good. I called FS and they stated that the web site is troublesome especially if Jaws reads the stars. Thanks. Ann If you will be installing JAWS on a computer that does not have Internet access and you wish to use the Convenient OCR feature, you will also need to choose the link to download the OCR engine. Place this file in the same location as the executable before beginning the installation. That page is: http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.asp And, then, the direct download link for the OCR component is labeled: OCR Engine for Convenient OCR (54.7 MB - FTP download) And it points here: ftp ://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/DynUpdate/FSOmniPage/%7B0186-2A39-48C3-AC63-E44B049658C7%7D/FSOmniPage.msi Stay well Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: Ann Marie Medlar amedl...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, October 28, 2011 12:23 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws13 officially released I downloaded J13.0.303-32bit.exe from FS site. Hi Mike, Do you use this feature at all? - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara In Arcadia mb69ma...@charter.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, August 19, 2011 1:37 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] online banking Hi Yvonne Alan, Below is a note that I had saved regarding Karat Browsing. FROM http://blogmines.com/blog/2009/07/15/what-is-caret-browsing-in-internet-explorer-8/ Caret Browsing is cool feature available in Internet Explorer 8. Rather than using a mouse to select text and move around within a webpage, you can use standard navigation keys on your keyboard-Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, and the arrow keys. This feature is called Caret Browsing and is named after the caret-or cursor-that appears when you edit a document. From Yahoo: In computing, caret navigation is a kind of keyboard navigation where a caret (also known as text cursor, text insertion cursor, or text selection cursor) is used to navigate within a text document. It is a fundamental feature for applications that deal with text, for example text editors, word processors and desktop publishing programs. This kind of navigation is also supported by the Mozilla-based web browsers, where it is referred as caret browsing. A shortcut key (F7) is assigned to toggle between caret mode and non-caret mode. In caret mode, a blinking caret appears within the webpage. User can then navigate the webpage using arrow keys. The navigation is finer than spatial navigation and tabbing navigation, which deals with hyperlinks only, but most times it is slower. so basically if you have a PSP or cellphone browser... that's what it becomes like.. where you can move up and down by using the arrow keys [they jump to the next link] to turn it off press F7 again... so all-in-all, its changing your settings on a webpage so you can navigate the page with the keyboard opposed to the mouse. From me: We can already do this FASTER with JAWS. BTW: Caret Browsing is also available in FireFox. Hope this helps, somewhat!. Take care. Re: [Blind-Computing] RV: Question on using DVR
I don't think Apple supports Adobi or flash. - Original Message - From: Don Marang donald.mar...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2011 12:58 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] RV: Question on using DVR It should be possible to manage your DirecTV DVR from your iPhone. I think the app is free in the Apple App Store. The mobile site to schedule the DVR from a PC in a IE or Firefox used to be my favorite method. However, it no longer allows access from a PC. The guide on the main site uses a lot of Flash and is not accessible. This was not true until this year. I have been a customer since 1995 and they have heard plenty from me recently. To browse through the TV listings, I use the TitanTV.com site. It is very customizable allowing you to select provider or providers, favorite channels, font size, what info is displayed, and much more. The guide can view up to 6 hours in a grid contained in a true html table. Re: [Blind-Computing] RV: Question on using DVR
Hi Don, I had Direct TV but switched to cable because in Florida where I am in winter kept losing the sattelite. I am sure it has improved since then but I got so frustrated because even if I called direct TV I could not interact or troubleshoot what was displayed on screen. Cable does not go down as often and when it comes back the TV is on. I am trying to decide to buy IPad2 or not but some applications on ITunes like TV, remote control, GPS, money id, color ID are quite compelling. I'll be away for a month or so and unsure if being unplugged is wise. Unsure how difficult windows 7 is on netbook or laptop so if I have a learning curve maybe I'll go with IPad. Don't want a IPhone because I have The Haven with little Verizon carrier cost. I'll just use WiFi on IPad2. But now I hear there is a backlog for IPad2 and I need it by 6/1/11. So again I'll maybe wait for next generation. Re: [Blind-Computing] Speaking math symbols
Maybe put all math symbols in Jaws dictionary? It has been some time since I had algebra but I guess you would need the radical sign or square root, * for times, / for divide. I am unsure how to type x squared or x cubed on my PC keyboard. But if you have some sighted help maybe you can copy to clipboard any math symbols that are not reading and put them into dictionary and give them an intelligent name. Parenthesis are key in algebra. The exclamation point is factorial. Unsure if you have a Braille display or not but if so there is computer Braille that might help. Re: [Blind-Computing] I am not smarter than a 5th grader
Hi all, I have both Firefox and IE as Internet browsers. Yesterday when people were talking about defragging I decided to do some housekeeping on my PC. I got PC maintenance from the Jaws user site and followed the steps. When I did windows+r and typed %temp%, highlighted all, and shift+delete, I got errors. I began deleting page by page but maybe I messed up an IE file? My friend's daughter is bicycling cross country USA to raise money for cancer. When I enter on link IE tells me that link is not good. I emailed to many friends and no one seems to have a problem with this link. So I made firefox the default browser and entered on link and had no problem. So do you think I messed up IE 8 while cleaning up my PC? If so where can I get a new download to reinstall? Do you think that could be the problem? Re: [Blind-Computing] audio text books
Here is 1 publisher's request form for accessible books. I needed a book for C++ in 2004 or so and got it here. Unsure what subject matter you need but most likely each publisher has something like this. https://order.superlibrary.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/pearson?cmd=DisabilityRequestForm - Original Message - From: Annette Carr amca...@verizon.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, December 10, 2010 7:09 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] audio text books Hi, It sounds like you have already gone the route of BookShare, NLS and RFBD, so now it is time to check out public sources such as Audible, Amazon, Borders, and others by doing a Google search for audio books. Of course there is a very good chance that none of these public sources have what you need either. Have you talked to your university to see if they have services to either obtain the books from the publisher or scan them into a file for you. Yes, it needs to be the university to contact the publisher, and not the student. If you have a sheet scanner and something like OpenBook or Kurzweil, you can scan them in yourself. Places like Kinko's or office supply stores can cut the binding off so that you can use the sheet feeder. When you are done scanning the book they can put a comb binding on the book to keep the printed pages together in case you need to refer back to the printed book for pictures, tables, charts, etc. I think that some of these places also scan documents into an electronic file, but I do not know what file options you would have. If you do not own OCR software you might want to check out the reasonably priced products by Premier Software at URL readingmadeeasy.com (That is reading made easy, without spaces between the words) or Abby Fine available at most local computer supply stores. There are service providers around the country who scan books in for a fee which some rehabilitation agencies will pay for. You can always resort back to how we did it last century, have a person read the book into a recording. I'm sure you do not even own a cassette recorder, but digital recorders can do the same job. Some digital recorders have the ability to put an index marker in the recording for easy navigation. These marks can be used to indicate the start of chapters or sections. The reading assignments can be read into separate files in the order of their due date. These files can be downloaded to a computer and e-mailed to you or burned to a CD. Retired school teachers and professors are often willing to volunteer their time to read textbooks. Churches are another good source for finding volunteer readers. Due to the amount of time and effort that goes into obtaining accessible textbooks, you have to start working on it the semester before. Hope you find this info helpful. It's fast, it allows communication with specific groups, e.g., your list of friends, your list of coworkers, your family, etc., it's free, it saves you the headache of a trip to the post office. But, as with everything else, email has a downside, that is that it's possible to get malware (viruses, spyware, etc.) from it. Generally that only happens when you open up email attachments, which are often denoted by a paper clip icon by your email message. Some attachments are harmless--they contain photos, songs, jokes, etc. Others, however, are not harmless, they may even be sent unknowingly by a friend whose computer is infected. So how do you know which attachments to open which not to? Enter my big 4, e.g, if you follow these rules, you'll seldom if ever get a malware infection via email. The file attachment should be accompanied by a message/note containing the following: 1) Recipient name; 2) The name(s) of the file(s) being attached--if there's a bunch, at least the first 3; 3) A description of the files' contents; 4) The sender's name. This sounds *really complicated, but it isn't. The following will suffice: Hay, Grandma, I'm sending u some photos of our trip to Disney World. The files are called Disney1, disney2, disney3, etc. Love Always, Jackie This message contains 1) The recipient's name (Grandma); 2) A description of the attachment contents (photos of our trip to Disney World); 3) Filenames (disney1, disney2, disney3, etc.); 4) The sender's name (Jackie). Viruses simply don't do that. Hope this helps keep every1 just a lil safer! Opening an attachment that contains malware is an easy way to infect your computer with malicious files. Any time you receive an email with an attachment, you should consider whether you know (and trust) the sender and then determine whether the email fits the sender's character. For example, if an email suggest that you open some mysterious link, it's probable the email is spam. Likewise, your grandmother isn't likely to send you an email asking you to download some salacious photos, so you can be assured that such a message is also spam. Daily Term: link farming When ranking a Web site, many search engines, such as Google, factor in the number of sites to which it is linked. If I'm not mistaken, the Book Sense uses the Eloquence synthesizer, like JAWS. In my opinion, the Victor Stream has the worst synthesizer of all three readers. I had the old Book Port, and the synthesizer wasn't the greatest, but it pronounced most words correctly. What bothers me most about the VR Stream is the pronunciation. If I had it to do over again, I would buy the Book Sense. Hi all, I have 2 PCs in different locations 1 running XP media and the other running XP pro. I have no problems with media but with proI fall out of a web site. For example, When I go to the web and open FS site, I down arrow and I arrow down about 4 or 5 times and all of a sudden I am in my list of searches I did using Google. At least that is where I think I am. Below I have my PC info. Any Ideas? I tried maximizing the page but don't know why this happens using XP pro. Re: [Blind-Computing] A big problem
Another thing to do is to bring up script manager while you have skipe opened. insert+f2 then press s for scripts So now you can see your scripts for skipe in script manager While in script manager, control +o to open and tab to file type and choose all file types and enter shift tab to list view all skipe files should be listed so you can just delete the skipe.jsb file. Because you deleted the binary file you have no skipe scritps working. go into skipe.jss file and save to recompile. - Original Message - From: Maria Campbell lucky1i...@sbcglobal.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2010 12:40 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] A big problem I really have a problem--a big one.
