Re: [Blind-Computing] Gmail where is select all and conversation check boxes?

2012-03-23 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi all,
I am using
Jaws 13 XP Pro IE8 and going to
www.gmail.com
for email. Many messages are still in my in box and I am trying to delete
messages.

I go to search edit box and type
in:inbox is:unread
a huge list of unread messages are listed. According to GMail help and
other sources on web I should be able to check select all and then select
all conversations to delete all these messages at once.

Unfortunately I cannot find the check boxes for select all or conversation.
Any ideas? I went into standard display and html display and no luck. I
went through the menus and did not see anything helpful.

So any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

2011-10-31 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi all,
Well a fresh morning start and a cup of coffee helped me to resolve printer
problem. I deleted the extra HP1006(copy1) and I think made the other
HP1006 the default printer by going to control panel, printers and faxes
highlight HP1006 and pressed application key and entered on default printer.
When I deleted the other HP1006 printer it made MS the default printer.
Honestly did not know what I was doing but I think I resolved the problem.
I hope so.

Thanks for any help.

Yes we were out of state for about a month or so. Also when ai rebooted
the printer was off.
I'll try again in morning because my nephew wanted to print his paper for

had a blizzard in October and lost power.
I tried to add a printer because it had no signs of recognition. So then

I think my printer is a USB but I think I defined it to LPT1 so I think I

Hi Jerry,
I just sort of had a similar problem but absolutely not the same. Maybe go
to control panel p for printers faxes enter and see what is there. Arrow
down to HP device press application key and check out options.
Then maybe virtualize windows and let me know what is in there under
printers/faxes and under application key.I would not tell you to delete

Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws13 officially released

2011-10-28 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Thanks so much. I just used keyboard convenient scanning combination when I
was on web.
I did download the FTB OCR and ran it but unsure where it installed but when
I went into start, programs, j for Jaws 13 folder these are options:

Explore JAWS
Tools
Braille Viewer
Help
JAWS
Run HJPad
These 2 files are in my download folder
J13.0.303-32bit.exe
FSOmniPage.msi
but I ran the J13.exe and checked for updates before downloading and running
FSOmniPage.msi
So if I am on desktop and use the insert+spaceBar then o then s it should
work if installed correctly regardless if connected to web?
Well the scanning just worked on my desktop so I guess my installation is
good. I called FS and they stated that the web site is troublesome
especially if Jaws reads the stars.

Thanks.
Ann

If you will be installing JAWS on a
computer that does not have Internet access and you wish to use the
Convenient OCR feature, you will also need to choose the link to download
the OCR engine. Place this file in the same location as the executable
before beginning the installation.

That page is:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.asp

And, then, the direct download link for the OCR component is labeled:
OCR Engine for Convenient OCR (54.7 MB - FTP download)

   And it points here:
ftp
://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/DynUpdate/FSOmniPage/%7B0186-2A39-48C3-AC63-E44B049658C7%7D/FSOmniPage.msi

October 24, 2011
Freedom Scientific today announced the release of JAWS® for Windows version
13, including Convenient OCR, a feature that performs Optical Character
Recognition on text that is displayed as an image, thereby enabling blind
computer users to read items that were previously inaccessible. Examples of
such screens include a PDF file, the setup screen of an application, or the
menu of selections on a DVD. JAWS now provides an opportunity to read and
interact with these screens, including locating and clicking on text which
may be required to activate a control.

JAWS 13 also includes Results Viewer, a new HTML interface that displays the
results of features like Research It. The new interface enables faster
navigation with Navigation Quick Keys and switching to other windows without
losing the results of your lookup. Sports scores have returned to Research
It and are easier to navigate than ever before. The INSERT+V keystroke now
opens the new Quick Settings, which replaces Adjust JAWS Options and matches
the easy-to-use Settings Center style interface introduced last year in JAWS
12.

This release represents a huge step in accessibility for screen reader
users, says Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product Management for
Freedom Scientific. Whether trying to identify and read inaccessible PDF
documents that are just scanned images or interacting with graphical
controls that could not previously be located, the new Convenient OCR option
built into JAWS 13 has been described as a real game changer. JAWS 13 is
also packed with other features and enhancements that have been selected and
designed to improve access and ease of use for all users.

The upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as either a 32-bit or
64-bit version from the JAWS downloads page.

other

windows without losing the results of your lookup. Sports scores have
returned to Research It and are easier to navigate than ever before. The
INSERT+V

keystroke now opens the new Quick Settings, which replaces Adjust JAWS
Options and matches the easy-to-use Settings Center style interface
introduced

last year in JAWS 12.

This release represents a huge step in accessibility for
screen reader users, says Eric Damery, Vice President of Software
Product

Management for Freedom Scientific. Whether trying to identify and read
inaccessible PDF documents that are just scanned images or interacting
with

graphical controls that could not previously be located, the new
Convenient OCR option built into JAWS 13 has been described as a real
game
changer. JAWS 13 is also packed with other features and enhancements
that have
been selected and designed to improve access and ease of use for all
users.

The upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as
either a 32-bit or 64-bit version from the JAWS downloads page.

First one is called three compare.

I found a problem with the firsst program - tree compare. It hangs when
comparing the folders so be aware.

The other one works well on xp, jaws 12 and 13 beta.

I uploaded on sendspace and here are the links:

1. tree compare

2 directory compare

Both programs are portable - they does not need installation. Just unrar,
enter on the executable file and use. I recommend the second program.

Hope you'll find them usefull.

My version of e-book? Just take whatever file format given and convert it
to a plain text file, and put it on my braille display device. Easy, fast
and the files take up little space. I'm seeing a lot more formats around
nowadays and I have no idea about some of them. You can get converters for
.lit files and make them into word documents, plain text or probably html
if you want. PDF files and adobe in general I want little to do with so
I'm actually looking for a standalone converter that will render the files
as plaintext without me even having to open Adobe reader.

Unfortunately, there is no one definition for e-books. It depends on the
provider of the book. For example, Overdrive's e-books are in some type
of
PDF that is not accessible. I have not had time to play with them to
figure
out if you can convert the file into something that can be read by JAWS
or

other A.T. I use the Overdrive's e-audio books that can be in MP3 or the
Apple iProduct format.

I would love to hear from others on the list on this topic.

Hi Yvonne Alan,

Below is a note that I had saved regarding Karat Browsing.

FROM
http://blogmines.com/blog/2009/07/15/what-is-caret-browsing-in-internet-explorer-8/
Caret Browsing is cool feature available in Internet Explorer 8.
Rather than using a mouse to select text and move around within a webpage,
you can use standard navigation keys on your keyboard-Home, End, Page Up,
Page
Down, and the arrow keys. This feature is called Caret Browsing and is
named

after the caret-or cursor-that appears when you edit a document.

From Yahoo:
In computing, caret navigation is a kind of keyboard navigation where a
caret (also known as text cursor, text insertion cursor, or text
selection
cursor) is used to navigate within a text document. It is a fundamental
feature for applications that deal with text, for example text editors,
word

processors
and desktop publishing programs.

This kind of navigation is also supported by the Mozilla-based web
browsers,

where it is referred as caret browsing. A shortcut key (F7) is assigned
to toggle between caret mode and non-caret mode. In caret mode, a blinking
caret appears within the webpage. User can then navigate the webpage using
arrow
keys. The navigation is finer than spatial navigation and tabbing
navigation, which deals with hyperlinks only, but most times it is slower.

so basically if you have a PSP or cellphone browser... that's what it
becomes like.. where you can move up and down by using the arrow keys
[they

jump

From me:
We can already do this FASTER with JAWS.
BTW: Caret Browsing is also available in FireFox.

Hope this helps, somewhat!. Take care.

It should be possible to manage your DirecTV DVR from your iPhone. I
think the app is free in the Apple App Store.

The mobile site to schedule the DVR from a PC in a IE or Firefox used to
be my favorite method. However, it no longer allows access from a PC.
The guide on the main site uses a lot of Flash and is not accessible.
This was not true until this year. I have been a customer since 1995
and they have heard plenty from me recently.

To browse through the TV listings, I use the TitanTV.com site. It is
very customizable allowing you to select provider or providers, favorite
channels, font size, what info is displayed, and much more. The guide
can view up to 6 hours in a grid contained in a true html table. This
means that the table navigation keys for JAWS or orca easily let you
move through the channels (up and down), and through the time slots
(left and right). Times and channel names are naturally announced as
the table headings.

I used to have a JAWS Script that helped schedule a recording on the DVR
from the TitanTV grid, but until DirecTV provides a website where I can
get to the correct date, time and channel, I can not get this to work
again.

Hi everyone,

I know that perhaps this isn't a subject that directly deals with this

out with new things.

So, here's the deal.

I just got a great deal on phone, Internet, and TV. The TV is with
DirectTV
and part of that comes with a DVR. With the latest technological
advances,
is it possible for a totally blind person like myself to use a DVR with
any

I know that some can be managed via a computer, and if that's the case,
how

well does something like that work with JAWS? Does anyone know anything
about this? What about an IPhone? Does anyone know about that?

If this is the case, then I'll keep the DVR. If not, then it probably
doesn't make sense to have it, does it?

Please share your thoughts either on or off list.

I apologize for the subject matter.

Re: [Blind-Computing] RV: Question on using DVR

2011-05-19 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi Don,
I had Direct TV but switched to cable because in Florida where I am in
winter kept losing the sattelite. I am sure it has improved since then but
I got so frustrated because even if I called direct TV I could not interact
or troubleshoot what was displayed on screen.

Cable does not go down as often and when it comes back the TV is on.
I am trying to decide to buy IPad2 or not but some applications on ITunes
like TV, remote control, GPS, money id, color ID are quite compelling. I'll
be away for a month or so and unsure if being unplugged is wise. Unsure how
difficult windows 7 is on netbook or laptop so if I have a learning curve
maybe I'll go with IPad. Don't want a IPhone because I have The Haven with
little Verizon carrier cost. I'll just use WiFi on IPad2. But now I hear
there is a backlog for IPad2 and I need it by 6/1/11. So again I'll maybe
wait for next generation.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Speaking math symbols

2011-03-12 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Maybe put all math symbols in Jaws dictionary?
It has been some time since I had algebra but I guess you would need the
radical sign or square root, * for times, / for divide. I am unsure how to
type x squared or x cubed on my PC keyboard. But if you have some sighted
help maybe you can copy to clipboard any math symbols that are not reading
and put them into dictionary and give them an intelligent name.

Parenthesis are key in algebra. The exclamation point is factorial.
Unsure if you have a Braille display or not but if so there is computer
Braille that might help.

Hi
I am currently in an algebra class
that is required by my college. The college provided the textbook to me in
PDF format. However, when I try to read the document with JAWS 12 it shows
none of the math symbols. Thus, the book is useless. So, I tried to
convert the document to text and found the text version has no math

what to do next. Any help is appreciated.

God bless,

I often enough use Jamal Masry's PDF2TXT for stripping PDF files down to
text files,

http://www.empowermentzone.com/p2tsetup.exe

or in some PDF files you can just use it's own save as file menu item to
try saving them from there as text files.

Thank you!, using the jaws cursor did the trick, ... finally
! However, I think Adobe is still going to stop at a given number of

Sometimes, with jaws, you need to route jaws to PC, and then use it's
right-click button/keystroke to invoke the necessary context menu for
downloading something, or else, generally, after you have activated the
link

into a new window - shift + enter - and then closed that one again, the
applicatons/right click key on the keyboard will then activate the right
context menu.

I often enough use Jamal Masry's PDF2TXT for stripping PDF files down to
text files,

http://www.empowermentzone.com/p2tsetup.exe

or in some PDF files you can just use it's own save as file menu item to
try saving them from there as text files.

Thank you!, using the jaws cursor did the trick, ... finally
! However, I think Adobe is still going to stop at a given number of
pages and not prepare the document because its too large. If I could
figure out how to solve that problem as well then that would be
terrific!

You are probably right about key strokes but I guess it depends on your
entry point for narrator.
Sometimes I lose Jaws so I want to have some backup plans like NVDA and
Narrator.
Anyway I installed the NVDA program software and began reading the help and
key commands.

On the MP3 training file he used eloquence from Kurtzweil.
I have Jaws and elloquence but when I use control+n, preferences,
synthesizers I only had 3 options. Do you know how I can get elloquence as
an option?

I'm no accessibility trainer, but to launch Narrator I believe you do the
following:
1. Pres Windows key plus letter R, type narrator, then press enter.
2. Press Windows key, type narrator, then press enter.
3. Press Windows key plus letter U, type alt + N.

To close Narrator press Alt + tab until you switch to the narrator window

What is an entry point for narrator?
The methods I described can be done without a screen reader as they are
very

easy and not difficult to remember if jaws goes out for the Nth time.
Regarding your Eloquence problem, if its jaws related, I say save yourself
the time and hassle of writing this list or other lists and simply call
FS.
Believe me, calling them for whatever pops up will make you begin as
you're

getting your $1000 worth.

Hi all,
I have both Firefox and IE as Internet browsers.
Yesterday when people were talking about defragging I decided to do some
housekeeping on my PC.

I got PC maintenance from the Jaws user site and followed the steps.
When I did windows+r and typed %temp%, highlighted all, and shift+delete, I
got errors. I began deleting page by page but maybe I messed up an IE file?
My friend's daughter is bicycling cross country USA to raise money for
cancer. When I enter on link IE tells me that link is not good.
I emailed to many friends and no one seems to have a problem with this link.
So I made firefox the default browser and entered on link and had no
problem.

So do you think I messed up IE 8 while cleaning up my PC?
If so where can I get a new download to reinstall? Do you think that could
be the problem?

Thanks,

Well, the other thing you need to know is what software will be used for

for the blind in that environment.

I am not an Apple user though I am really getting more interested in it
due to increasing frustrations with Windows and Jaws apparent

2010-12-10 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Here is 1 publisher's request form for accessible books. I needed a book
for C++ in 2004 or so and got it here.
Unsure what subject matter you need but most likely each publisher has
something like this.

Hi,

It sounds like you have already gone the route of BookShare, NLS and
RFBD,

so now it is time to check out public sources such as Audible, Amazon,
Borders, and others by doing a Google search for audio books. Of course
there is a very good chance that none of these public sources have what
you

need either.

Have you talked to your university to see if they have services to either
obtain the books from the publisher or scan them into a file for you.
Yes,
it needs to be the university to contact the publisher, and not the
student.

If you have a sheet scanner and something like OpenBook or Kurzweil, you
can
scan them in yourself. Places like Kinko's or office supply stores can
cut

the binding off so that you can use the sheet feeder. When you are done
scanning the book they can put a comb binding on the book to keep the
printed pages together in case you need to refer back to the printed book
for pictures, tables, charts, etc. I think that some of these places also
scan documents into an electronic file, but I do not know what file
options

you would have.

If you do not own OCR software you might want to check out the reasonably
priced products by Premier Software at URL readingmadeeasy.com (That is
reading made easy, without spaces between the words) or Abby Fine
available

at most local computer supply stores.

There are service providers around the country who scan books in for a fee
which some rehabilitation agencies will pay for.

You can always resort back to how we did it last century, have a person
read

the book into a recording. I'm sure you do not even own a cassette
recorder, but digital recorders can do the same job. Some digital
recorders

have the ability to put an index marker in the recording for easy
navigation. These marks can be used to indicate the start of chapters or
sections. The reading assignments can be read into separate files in the
order of their due date. These files can be downloaded to a computer and
e-mailed to you or burned to a CD. Retired school teachers and professors
are often willing to volunteer their time to read textbooks. Churches are
another good source for finding volunteer readers.

Due to the amount of time and effort that goes into obtaining accessible
textbooks, you have to start working on it the semester before.

Hope you find this info helpful.

Annette

Good advice. Jackie I am replying to see if that header went away.

W/reference to that, perhaps the post on my technophoeb.com site about
staying safe w/email regarding my big 4 criteria is helpful, is
also pasted below.

1 of the things that people love to do on their computers is to
receive email. why not? It's fast, it allows communication with
specific groups, e.g., your list of friends, your list of coworkers,
your family, etc., it's free, it saves you the headache of a trip to
the post office. But, as with everything else, email has a downside,
that is that it's possible to get malware (viruses, spyware, etc.)
from it. Generally that only happens when you open up
email attachments, which are often denoted by a paper clip icon by
your email message. Some attachments are harmless--they contain
photos, songs, jokes,
etc. Others, however, are not harmless, they may even be sent
unknowingly by a friend whose computer is infected. So how do you know
which attachments
to open which not to? Enter my big 4, e.g, if you follow these
rules, you'll seldom if ever get a malware infection via email.

The file attachment should be accompanied by a message/note containing
the following:
1) Recipient name;
2) The name(s) of the file(s) being attached--if there's a bunch, at least
the

first 3;
3) A description of the files' contents;
4) The sender's name.

This sounds *really complicated, but it isn't. The following will suffice:
Hay, Grandma, I'm sending u some photos of our trip to Disney World.
The files are called Disney1, disney2, disney3, etc.
Love Always,
Jackie

This message contains
1) The recipient's name (Grandma);
2) A description of the attachment contents (photos of our trip to
Disney World);
3) Filenames (disney1, disney2, disney3,
etc.);
4) The sender's name (Jackie).

Viruses simply don't do that.

Hope this helps keep every1 just a lil safer!

Beware Of Email Attachments

Don't open strange email attachments. Opening an attachment that contains
malware is an easy way to infect your computer with malicious files. Any
time you receive an email with an attachment, you should consider whether
you know (and trust) the sender and then determine whether the email fits
the sender's character. For example, if an email suggest that you open
some
mysterious link, it's probable the email is spam. Likewise, your
grandmother

isn't likely to send you an email asking you to download some salacious
photos, so you can be assured that such a message is also spam.

link farming

When ranking a Web site, many search engines, such as Google, factor in

Ann, you've had this problem on the Jaws scripting list as well. U
said it only occurred when u included a link to a certain site, but
that link's gone you've still got this header.

I don't know what it is precisely, but I, like Don, suspect u may have
a problem.

My suggestion is that u go to:
www.trendmicro.com
download HijackThis, install it into its own folder, then choose the
option to create save a log file. Send it me off list I'll have a
look.

Gmail doesn't add this header, you're using outlook depressed (I
mean express), so I see no obvious reason for it. HJT won't find
everything, specifically rootkits, but rootkits usually leave friends
behind.

Hi; I, too, am struggling with which player to buy. I saw the stream once
for a short time but I wasn't impressed with the sound; also I didn't like
that the volume level, to me, was low. Do you know anymore about the book
sense that might help me make up my mind. Thanks,

I own the Victor Stream. If I'm not mistaken, the Book Sense uses the
Eloquence synthesizer, like JAWS. In my opinion, the Victor Stream has the
worst synthesizer of all three readers. I had the old Book Port, and the
synthesizer wasn't the greatest, but it pronounced most words correctly.
What bothers me most about the VR Stream is the pronunciation. If I had it
to do over again, I would buy the Book Sense.

In my opinion, the best book player available is the BookSense. The
male and female voices are better than other players out there and I
like the size of the BookSense. I drag mine all over the place and with
an 8 gig card installed, I am able to put loads of books on it.

I hope this isn't off topic, and if it is, I'm sure someone will slap my
hand.

I download books from both Bookshare and the NLS site.
I'd like to know which is the best player to listen to both types of
books and the best voice for listening pleasure.

I believe the BookPort does this, but with a horrendous synthesizer.

Well you'd be better off quitting jaws till u get it installed up.
You'll need to quit 1 b4 u start the other--u don't need or want 2
screenreaders yammering on at once.

2010-10-28 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi all,
I have 2 PCs in different locations 1 running XP media and the other running
XP pro.
I have no problems with media but with proI fall out of a web site. For
example,
When I go to the web and open FS site, I down arrow and I arrow down about 4
or 5 times and all of a sudden I am in my list of searches I did using
Google. At least that is where I think I am.
Below I have my PC info. Any Ideas? I tried maximizing the page but don't
know why this happens using XP pro.

I really have a problem--a big one.
I tried recompiling the scrips for Skype Watch and now my PC doesn't stop
saying unknown function and a bunch of other stuff about the installation
of the program.

I feel like such a novice, which is probably exactly what I am.
Please help as this unknown function message is constant, even when I set
my screen echo to none.

I can't remember how to try to capture the message in the virtual window.

2010-10-28 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Another thing to do is to bring up script manager while you have skipe
opened.

insert+f2 then press s for scripts

So now you can see your scripts for skipe in script manager
While in script manager, control +o to open and tab to file type and choose
all file types and enter

shift tab to list view
all skipe files should be listed so you can just delete the skipe.jsb file.
Because you deleted the binary file you have no skipe scritps working.
go into skipe.jss file and save to recompile.
