Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws professional

Jaws professional works with Windows XP pro, Vista and Windows 7 pro and up,
Windows 8 Pro. Standard jaws works with the XP home, Vista and 7 and 8 up to
pro versions. Also the difference is in price - $200 for jaws Pro.

2012-06-23 Thread Negoslav Sabev
The difference is in what version you have - retail or OEM. Usually OEm have
i386 folder.

Here is the difference between the two.

And this may clarify what purpose serves the i386 folder.

On my XP Pro computer, the Hosts file is located at C:\I386\Hosts. The
I386 folder contains almost 200 files and like the Windows folder, is at
the root of the C drive. I have no idea why the Hosts folder is there
and not under Drivers/Etc, as it seems to be on most other systems.

Hi Gerald Scorpio,

I am running 2 computers at the moment using a KVM switch. 1 computer is
running XP Home, the other is a dual boot box running XP Pro Windows7
Pro.

With both XP systems the , Hosts folder was in:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

As a matter of fact I couldn't even locate an I-386 folder. Is this I386
folder on the root of the C drive, in place of the Windows folder or, is
it

inside the Windows folder? I've did a search came up with nothing but,
this was the closest thing I came to I386 with the search; snti386.dll

Take care.

  Hi Gerald,

In that case, I'm afraid you can't speak for the majority of computer
  users,
as most computer users use XP home edition, and the folder outlined in
the
post is located exactly where it says, in the Windows, System32,
Drivers,
ETC folder in the Local disk drive.

I was a bit confused when I followed the directions in the post and
found
the folder exactly where it was, then when I went to look for the
folder

  you
mentioned, I had no trace of it, so it would seem that the folder may
be

  in
a different location if you're using Windows Pro versions.

Glad to know this has been cleared up.

Here is what I read on another list and it works.

Hi,
Just the domain expired, the webvisum server still works. Not sure for how
long though.

To make webvisum work again, follow these steps:
1. open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc;
2. using notepad, open the file hosts with no extension;
3. add the following line to the end of the file:
204.14.19.231 api.webvisum.com

Sure it's possible.

First you open the mono file and copy its contents to the clipboard.
Then you create a new file with two channels.
Then you copy the contents of the clipboard into your new file, and,

there's your stereo file.

Subject: goldwave mixing question

Hello,

Today I've started using GoldWave audio editor. I'm using it successfully
for my needs, but there is something that really annoys me at the moment.
I want to mix background music with forefront voice using the voice over
effect. Please don't confuse it with Apple's voice over screen reader.
The music track is around 4 minutes long. I have copied it few times to
match the speech length which is 22 minutes. I place the start cursor at
the 16th second, but when I choose some preset or try to make my own
adjustments it does something odd. It shows 0 seconds remaining and 100%
done in the status bar, but continues for a few more moments. As a result
after the end of the first copy of the track it continues with background
silence instead with the music. It sounds this way till the speech is
finished and then continues with the second copy of the music track. It
seems like a part of speech is mixed, but the rest of the voice is
strangely inserted against all logic. . I'm not sure if some setting or
adjustment has to be made.
I've only lowered the music volume by 50%, resampled it to 96000 KHZ to
match the speech sample rate and nothing more. It's strange because I've
done this few times with some small voice tracks successfully and without
any problems.

So if you can enlighten me it would be great.

Hi listers. My IE 8 RSS feed reader was working fine until yesterday when
my techie friend performed some preventive maintenace and diagnostic
testing on my computer. Now, when I invoke the Feeds list in IE8 with
Control-J and hit enter on any feed, instead of going to the web page
containing the feed content, the file download dialog is invoked. So for
instance, if I hit enter on the feed labeled blind planet aggregator, I
hear file download...do you want to open this file?, instead of going to
the blind planet aggregator page to read the latest content. He did not
make any changes to IE, but did run Wise Registry Cleaner. What's going
on here, and how do I fix it? I am running JAWS 9 with XP Pro, and until
yesterday, my IE 8 feed reader has worked flawlessly.

Document recovery. I'm asuming you are talking about MS Word? This occurs
when you open Word after a crash and files were open. I usually get notice
of this when I close Word and it flags if I want to save them but you
might get a notice when you open. Try using a Jaws or Review cursor and
go to the top of the screen, arrow down until you see the notice. As you
arrow down it'll be obvious what files are there. Just double click on
one and it'll open. Look at it and if it is not what you want saved close
it and follow the appropriate prompt. If it is something you want saved,
Save or Save As, the document you want.

As for the properties being grayed out, you'll have to be more specific as
to where you were/are and some detail, everything on your computer has
properties.

Two questions, if I may.

1. I receive screen messages telling me that, the document recovery has

I've yet to see those files. I suspect they're files that I need, and lost
a while ago. How do I surface those files, and where are they?

2. When I try to go into my properties listings, I get a message,
unavailable. How do I make them available, as well as any other
unavailable function?

Re: [Blind-Computing] converting ISO to exe

2011-04-03 Thread Negoslav Sabev
Why you want to do this? Vinux or ubuntu is another operating system not
just an

aplication. You may want to install it on a virtual machine (computer) using
virtual box or vmwarePlayer. With the executable file you can't do this. If
you don't want virtual machine you may want to install it as a real system
replacing or along with windows. But the iso should be burned to cd/dvd to
do this. Also you can use the cd as a live system without installing it.
You should red more about it before you install it as a second operating
system.

Parenthesis are key in algebra. The exclamation point is factorial.

Hi. I've installed Winamp 5.601 this evening. I'm having a few little

I open Winamp, and I want to create a new playlist.

I alt E to open the playlist editor.

Then I go to Windows Explorer and select the track I'd like to add by
opening the applications menu where there is a selection to include to
Winamp.

However, even though earlier this evening I had that choice include in
Winamp, it's not there. Now the choice is add to Windows Media Player.

Not sure what I may have done to make this option disappear. It was a
nice

way to add songs to the playlist.

Can I get that back somehow? Thanks.

For the work that I'm, presently into, two places will fill the bill

How do I advise Excel that I want only two (2) decimal places, for the

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Shocking: Facebook to Shut Down On March 15

At first I thought this was some kind of practical joke, but it sure
sounds real. Read it and weep:

PALO ALTO, CA -Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down
in March.
Managing the site has become too stressful.
Facebook has gotten out of control, said Zuckerberg in a press
conference outside his Palo Alto office, and the stress of managing
this company has ruined my life.
I need to put an end to all the madness.
Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no
longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.
After March 15th the whole website shuts down, said Avrat Humarthi,
Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. So if you ever want to
see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You
won't be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.
Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult,
but that he does not think people will be upset.
I personally don't think it's a big deal, he said in a private phone
interview.
And to be honest, I think it's for the better. Without Facebook, people
will have to go outside and make real friends. That's always a good
thing.
Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.
What am I going to do without Facebook? said Denise Bradshaw, a high
school student from Indiana. My life revolves around it. I'm on
Facebook at least 10 hours a day.
Now what am I going to do with all that free time?
However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long
anticipated sense of relief.
I'm glad the Facebook nightmare is over, said Jon Guttari, a single
parent from Detroit. Now my teenager's face won't be glued to a
computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.
Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking
away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked
as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists
estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.
But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will
stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.
I don't care about the money, said Zuckerberg. I just want my old
life back.
The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their
personal information from the website before March 15th. After that
date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Converting ISO files to mp4's

2010-12-21 Thread Negoslav Sabev
There is a way to mount them on a virtual drive with a very easy and free
program. It's called WinCdEmu. You may find it on

http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/

Just press on the iso file, confirm with enter the device letter the program
will use or choose another with the up and down arrows, press enter and you
will be able to see the drive in my computer and use the files there
without extracting. All this just in seconds.

Yes. My ex-husband gave me an external hard drive containing two folders.
One labeled MP4's, which held movies. The other folder was called my
iso's, and was filled with ISO files of other movies. As they are now, I
can't play them, or really do anything with them. As I said, I looked up
how to convert them, and I found tons of programs, as well as tutorials, but
haven't been able to make them work with JAWS. The only reason I care is
that some of them are movies my kids would like me to put on their mp3

I don't think Speakup supports usb synths.
But I don't own a hardware synth my self so I'm not sure.
I know Speakup supports serial port synths though and I think it's
possible to get a usb synth to work by using a usb to serial converter.

But don't quote me on that!
I use software speech with Speakup when I use Linux.

I doubt Orca (the GNOME screen reader) supports usb synths either.
In fact I don't use Orca at all.

But a good place to get answers is the Speakup mailing list.
The Speakup homepage can be found at:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/

There is a link to the mailing list on the front page.
There is a Orca mailing list as well but I don't have the address right
now.
I can dig it up if you are interested, but a google search for Orca
screen reader should help as well :)

That dialog is very annoying! I can not remember which utility needs this
configuration run. I had trouble with it as well and used the Orca
magnifier to see what is going on. Orca does not respond very well on
this crude dialog. I think it uses ncurses to draw the character based
dialog. Try moving through the list of options with the up and down arrow
keys. If you are using the desktop keyboard layout, the NumPad Enter key
should better report what you are focused on. I ended up hitting the Tab
key, so it would cycle through the buttons and the list. When it enters
the list, it usually properly announces the item in the list with focus.
When you find the desired none item, just hit Enter.

Dave can correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that the image
backup files, which are usually split into 2 or 4 GB chunks are in
Terabyte's special TBI formula. You can backup to a different large
partition or external drive, if desired. Then Terabyte has a burn utility
which will burn the files to blank DVDs. When it does this, it will make
the first disk bootable to DOS, I believe, so it can be used to start the
recovery.

I was listening to davids' tutorial part 1 and heard that it was possible

I do not think that is possible. There is a program, tbview, to let you
view individual files in the backup image files and copy them back to the
real file system. I think it is possible to convert the backup image to
a virtual hard disk for a Virtual Machine, but I am not sure how to do
this, especially since the necessary drivers for the virtual environment
would be missing.

What is driving you to want the backup image to be in the ISO format?

Re: [Blind-Computing] image for windows and iso files

2010-11-29 Thread Negoslav Sabev

Hello,

Thank you for the answer.

I was listening to davids' tutorial part 1 and heard that it was possible to
burn first to iso files and then to cd/dvd. But maybe it's for older
versions. I ask this because it would be handy to do on a netbook for
example, where you don't have external cd/dvd recorder.

I do not think that is possible. There is a program, tbview, to let you
view individual files in the backup image files and copy them back to the
real file system. I think it is possible to convert the backup image to a
virtual hard disk for a Virtual Machine, but I am not sure how to do this,
especially since the necessary drivers for the virtual environment would be
missing.

What is driving you to want the backup image to be in the ISO format?

I have one more question. I've red the steps to create live vinux cd with

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config mountmanager mdadm e2undel

And here came the problem. A postfix configuration dialogue appeared and I
can not continue, because it asks me to choose between few options, but I
don't know how. It sounds as

Please choose the mail server configuration type that best meets your needs.

I try to select no configuration, but without success.

Daily Tip:
Word Shortcuts

Microsoft Word is perfectly navigable with a mouse and a few clicks on the
Ribbon, but it also has loads of keyboard shortcuts that you can take
advantage of while you're typing away. Once learned, these can make your
work significantly more efficient. Here are a few favorites:

CTRL-C copies a highlighted section of text.
CTRL-P pastes a copied section of text.
CTRL-X cuts any highlighted text; generally, the next step would be to
paste the cut section somewhere else.
CTRL-D brings up the Font window; from here you can modify font, text
size, character spacing, and styles.

END moves the cursor to the end of a line.
CTRL-K brings up the Hyperlink window.
SHIFT-F7 brings up the Thesaurus window.
CTRL-S saves the open document.

Daily Term:
ligature

A combination character used with some fonts when two regular characters
appear next to each other and bump against each other. For example, a
publisher may replace the letters ff with a ligature that connects the
short line in the middle of the characters.

If you plan to use JAWS in remote (terminal) sessions, you will need
JAWS Professional if you don't have it already and JAWS Remote Access
authorization. These are chargeable features. JAWS must be installed on
both client and server machines, and you must use either Remote
Desktop/Terminal Services or one of the many products offered by Citrix.

experience this problem with both IE 8 and Firefox 3.6.9 using XP Pro and

HI Negoslav;

Did you look in the control panel / add or remove programs to see if the
voices were in there? If not, open add or remove programs and arrow all
the way through the list to see if that is where they are installed. If
they are in there you can tab to remove on each voice to uninstall them.
I'm sure you have probably already looked in add or remove but, I don't
know

what you have tried or not. Another thought, did you look in the Program
Files folder or in the Windows / Media folder in the root of the C Drive
to

see if they are installed in 1 of those places? Hope you find the little
buggers! LOL Take care.

I never used that utility, but I use one called ERUNT -- Emergency Recovery
Utility for NT systems. This will back up your registry hives, and will
continue to back up your settings each time your system starts. It backs up
its data to a chosen folder (which by default is in the SystemRoot folder).
When you have a system crash, or when you encounter performance penalties
after installation or a virus attack, you simply restore your system by
running it from the backup folder. This is even possible in situations
where Windows refuses to load: you simply boot into safemode and run the
restore utility from the command line, or if not possible, you do a repair
and then run the restore utility. Better still, I found that you can
create a Bart's PE CD, and when your system is refusing to boot or do
anything, you just pop in the CD and run the live recovery CD: just access
the backup folder and run the restore utility and you will be prompted to
restart your machine.

It will restore your system to the date you did your backup. The
autobackup feature also helps you to select the date to which you want to
restore your computer.
The author of the program made it to run on 32-bit systems and I'm not
sure if it will work on 64-bit systems.

It saved me a lot of headaches as I used to reinstall my system after
every few months, but now I have stayed with my system for two years
without reinstalling Windows.

If you are interested in the utility, and to make sure that it works on
Windows Vista, here is the link to the homepage:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Hope this helps someone out there, if not directly applicable to your
situation.

Ishe

Hello Alasdair,

Thank you so much for that wonderful explanation. I actually just
found a text editor/word processor called VDE.

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,53873-page,1-c,wordprocessing/description.html

It's features and usage are incredible, and if it works with a
screen reader, then I'll definitely be using it from now on on my DOS
machine. It actually has options for saving and loading text in
various formats, including unformatted (with one varient being used to
open and/or save files in NotePad's format), ascii, MS Word through
97, Word Perfect 4-6, Word Star and a few more. This program's
functions can be customised but in the default settings can be
accessed either via a menu bar or via Word Star commands. Seriously,
I can't believe the power of this little editor! It even works on
Windows 95/98 machines. I just hope it's accessible. If so, then
I'll be reviewing it here later.

As for the Greek, unfortunately, I can only read and write it in
Windows. Even though there are newer editors and browsers in DOS that
can handle Unicode, I don't have a Greek synthesizer.

Talk soon,
Eleni
PS. I adore WebbIE but are there any plans of updating it? It no
longer works on certain webpages.

On 7/25/10, Alasdair King alasdairk...@gmail.com wrote:

There are two unrelated issues here.

1 How characters are encoded in the file - ANSI, DBCS and so on.
2 How newlines are encoded.

Newlines first. There is no consistent newline character (indicating
the end of a line) as there is for the character a. Instead, Windows
and MS-DOS uses two characters - carriage return CR, 10, and line feed
LF, 13. But Unix (and Apple Mac) uses one character - line feed LF,
13. So a text file can be in Windows/MS-DOS encoding or Unix encoding.
If you open a Unix text file in Notepad you'll find that the newlines
are missing and the whole thing is one big lump of text. WordPad is
smarter and realises the single LF characters should be newlines, so
you don't see this happen.

So if you have a Unix text file - no newlines in Notepad - then you
can open it in WordPad and then save it as Text or MS-DOS Text and
it'll then work correctly in Notepad and DOS. At this point I'm going
to admit that I can't tell why there are two WordPad Save As Text
options. They both produce Windows/MS-DOS format ANSI text files.

Now, character encodings. This is even more complicated. Essentially,
old-style ANSI can give you those files with lots of question marks
and the wrong characters. Use Unicode, which means using the UTF-8 or
the Unicode setting in Notepad or WordPad. Both are Unicode, but
different ways of encoding it - when Windows says Unicode is often
means DBCS. But anyway, Notepad can do either type, as can WordPad.
Here are two files with Greek in them, one in the Unicode format,
one in UTF8. Both work in Notepad:
http://development.webbie.org.uk/test/text/Text-Unicode.txt
http://development.webbie.org.uk/test/text/Text-UTF8.txt

Here's a detailed explanation, though some of the text is displayed
using images:
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html

So I think you should be able to use WordPad to open any file then
save it as Unicode, and all should then be well for Windows machines.
For MS-DOS pre-Windows machines you'll need to save as ANSI, which
means setting the code page of your machine to the language you want
to support - Greek, for example - and accepting that files with
Unicode and non-Greek character will be mangled on your system.

Best wishes,

line in one format might have already begun on the line above that in
the other. In both cases, VocalEyes didn't read the sentences
properly in Ed.exe. The words at the end of each line would cut off.
But in Word Perfect 5.1, it read the lines perfectly. I'm baffled by
this, since Ed is from Word Perfect Corporation and even uses the same
commands as 5.1. The only difference is that it saves as .txt and not
as .wpd and it doesn't convert the .txt files to .wpd when you open
them. I then checked the settings in VocalEyes in both programs and
they were the same.

I'm completely confused here.

Yes, there are Sapi 5 voices for Greek, but they're only for Windows.
I don't know of Alexandros, but Accapella has a wonderful voice called
Dimitris. NVDA, which is a free screenreader, comes with it's own
version of ESpeak, which is far better than the one that you can
download for Klango. I'm assuming that's the regular version. In any
case, NVDA has a setting that you can use to switch to Greek and
that's the one I always use. It does a great job at recognising the
tonos so words are usually pronounced correctly. It can be found
here.

http://www.nvda-project.org

As for learning Greek, there's an excellent free course here.

http://www.kypros.org

Go to Learn Greek and then to Modern Greek. There, you'll be able to
create an account and start on the lessons. They have audio as well
as text and both are exactly the same so you could use just one method
or combine them. They use the monotonic system, so ESpeak won't have
a problem reading the words. Note that there are some errors in
several early lessons. What I do is have one window open with the
text of the lesson and then copy it from that window into a blank
document with Wordpad so that I learn pronunciation and spelling.
There are no teachers or grades, so everything is done at your own
pace. If you need any help, just e-mail me offlist.

Take care,
Eleni

Yeah you are right... I have mentioned that in the first message in this

distant computer. However, this team viewer is really the best free
program that helped me fix other's problems remotely. Before i got hold of
it, i used to spend a long time guiding the client to do things i could
perform myself in very few minutes. Sometimes i have to ask the client to
hit some keystrokes for me, however, i really could do so much work with
it.

Believe it or not, once while I was playing with a distant computer, I
found out that even the jaws keystrokes worked, I was astonished as it was
the first time that I could make them to work. I tried my best to figure
out how come they did work but unfortunately I couldn't. I'm still
confused until today about how did they work? Was it just a cquencidence?
Did I hit unconciously a combination of keys which made them to function?
I really don't know. I am still hoping that someday, I or someone else

everything on the distant computer...

You don't need your jaws while working on the other machine. As soon as
you get your job done, swich to your computer by hitting the scroll

Another thing folks, while manipulating the distant machine, you will
not be able to use alt tab to swich between the open windows in your

releace them and start using alt tab just then. If you start alt tabbing

Hi there,

There is a free program called team viewer that enables one person to
control another's machine. This program is designed essencially for
the sighted user, however, I tested it with jaws and it works quite
well, in fact there are still some few things one can not do on the
client's machine especially performing specific jaws hotKeys, but i
was able to fix nearly everything that needed to be fixed on that
distant machine.

I found that I'm not able to read text with word and team viewer. I was not
able to read text in web sites also. It seems that no jaws key combinations
or keys for text and web navigation will work. What I meen? For example you
can't use insert+f2 to show the jaws manager list. You can't use arrows to
read by word, insert+down arrow to read all and so on. In web pages you
can't use h to navigate by heading, you cant read the text using arrow keys,
no navigation keys at all, accept tab to move by links.
Anyway, it's a good and free alternative for jaws tandem in spite of all the
imperfections for us as blind people.
I found that in the controling window we have menues we can activate using
the jaws cursor. EVen there is possibility to transmit audio signal from
our machine, but it wouldn't be nesessary for us. The file transfers are not
accessible for the blind recepiant.

Hi Arianna,

Yeah, that's exactly what you want, you want to hear the other machine's
Jaws speaking so that you know what's going on on the distant computer.
You don't need your jaws while working on the other machine. As soon as
you get your job done, swich to your computer by hitting the scroll lock.

Another thing folks, while manipulating the distant machine, you will not
be able to use alt tab to swich between the open windows in your client's
computer, you should first hit windows key + tab once, then releace them
and start using alt tab just then. If you start alt tabbing without
hitting the mentioned keystroke first, you can not swich between open
applications.

Again, sorry if i am a bit confused in guiding you, but that's how i
learned it, just by experementing

Good luck

Moving through tabs is not a jaws specific functionality, so you can use the

2009-05-08 Thread Negoslav Sabev
I'm not sure that an old version can prevent form downloading the same or
newer. If the program starts with windows, you can disable it using msconfig
and try again.

What is this program. Just curious.

Have you tried having someone send you the file rather than

Hi,
This means the Windows Installer, Nulsoft etc. or some uninstaller package
has been removed in part, or is missing files or has been corrupted.
There is no way at this point to uninstall the program correctly.
If you're brave, it's on to deleting folders, shortcut and Registry
entries

dealing with the program.
A system restore and a registry export first are advisable.

Hi, everyone. I'm using Jaws 4.51. Will that work well with IE 7? I
thought maybe of upgrading because I'm getting an update telling me to
install IE 8. I doubt if it will work with my version of jaws since it's

Any help would be very much appreciated.

While using JAWS 9, every time I open an email to read it, I am hearing
JAWS say a lot of things
that I don't hear when using JAWS 7. I'm sure I made some type of
adjustment for JAWS 7 to prevent
this from happening, but I can't remember what I did. For instance, I
received an email entitled
Godly Humor. Using JAWS 7, when I hit Enter, to read the message, JAWS
automatically starts
reading it. But with JAWS 9, I hear JAWS say the following, before
starting to read the message:

Godly Humor-message(html)-unicode(UTF-8) Read Only Edit
How can I stop JAWS from saying all of this?

Hi Rosemarie,
You should be able to install it without any problems.
Sometimes folks experience problems with installs, because they forget to
close other applications,
and disable security software that may interfere with the process.
Service pack 3 for Windows XP will need to be installed by
June or July of this year in order to continue to receive Windows updates.
I'm not sure on the exact date, you would have to check with Microsoft.
As far as it being posted on the Jaws-Users website, I know it was at one
time, but
I haven't looked for some time.
To get it directly from Microsoft, visit,

For OE, go to the file menu/identities/manage identities and look
through

the dialogue. What you want is found under the properties button.
For skype, just log out, and you will need your password to log in. It's
important to remember your pass. If you set skype to log you in
automaticly, you should change it in order to log in manually.

Maybe it's your ISP server, or the servers of your mail provider.
