Re: [BVARC] Our email list is publicly available?!?!?!?!?

2021-02-03 Thread Gus Bernard via BVARC
Howard, I am a lawyer and can tell you there is no liability issue. Don't
know where people get that idea.

Fact is, many of us want our email addresses and phone numbers available so
that others may easily find us. Remember WAY BACK when all of our phone
numbers were in the PHONE BOOK? Likewise, one of the BIG benefits of a
listserv like ours is the ability to go back and keyword search the
archives for LOTS of great information.

If you don't want the rest of us to find you, you can simply advise the
webmaster and he will remove that information from the "public" roster.
It's pretty hard to participate on this listserv "email incognito" although
some of us use special email addresses for our "radio" communications.
(One way to control email addresses leaks is to compartmentalize them -
have several, each of which you use for specific and limited purposes.)

If you really want something to remain private, don't write it or type it
or email it. If you want a phone number or social security number to stay
private, don't give it to anyone. You wouldn't leave your wallet lying
around.

Look, ham radio is a public and social hobby. Hams like meeting, and
learning about, each other, and learning from each other. That's a big
reason we join CLUBS.

Gus, K5GMB

In my opinion, it’s not that our information is publicly available, it’s
how easy it is to locate with a quick and simple Google search. In your
example, someone from the general public would have to know you have a HAM
license to go digging for your personal information. Thus, it is not
readily available to the general public.

Eddie, I think we all know that you can see some of our
information in several places on the web.  Until today I and a few
others I've spoken with since this thread started were unaware
that the bvarc listserve emails were available in a searchable
  public web archive.

If you go to the BVARC listserver page to sign up for the list, or
to the listserver page sent out in the monthly reminder notice,
there is a link to access archives, but if you try to access the

  The BVARC Archives

You can get more information about this list.
  Currently, there are no archives.

I think we all could agree that a person could safely assume from
this message that the list emails are not being archived on the
web as it is an optional feature of the listserve software. (Well
at least for those of us that have managed or run a mailman server
know archives are an option) There is no mention on any of the
listserve pages that all emails through the list server are being
gathered and stored on a system not under the control of BVARC and
available to anyone on the internet.  While a mailing list is by
no means private or secure as anyone on the list could 'share'
whatever lands in their inbox; additional steps are required to
share the content from list emails.  The mail archive service is
getting the messages directly and presenting them to anyone, not
just those subscribed to the list.  While it looks like the mail
archive systems tries to obfuscate email addresses, from what I
can tell it does nothing to 'hide' phone numbers.

When one posts message on a 'web forum' or 'news group' the
expectation is pretty much anyone on the internet can read it.
When one sends an email to an organizations email list, the
general expectation is only those subscribed to the email list are
going to be the ones to see it

Ravi, the 'private' wording on the list signup page refers to the

Hi KoriSorry you are surprised by the way things work.

BVARC is a public organization (901.c)Our website AND our reflector are public
!!  ANYTHING posted on the reflector is available to the general public.
If you send anything to the reflector (bvarc@bvarc.org) it will be forwarded to
all the folks who want to be notifiedas well as available to the public from
our website.
You mentioned PRIVATE email.   If you or SOMEONE ELSE forwards your private
email to the BVARC reflectorit will then be forwarded to all subscribers and
made available to our web users as well. (we cant know that)
I know some users have posted to the reflector and then posted an apology
because he mistakenlysent the email to the reflector as he wanted it to go
direct to the other person.   it happens...
The reason the website archives the reflector emails is because it is
information about ham radio (hopefully)that may benefit someone that is
searching or it may help direct someone to the BVARC club.
Not all reflector emails are stock full of useful information, but there are
plenty of great discussions that SHOULD BE SEARCHABLE.
I hope this helps you  understand
BVARC is public, we were formed to provide public service.
one of our goals is to promote ham radio and attract new ham radio operators
(and old ones as well) :)
It is MY JOB (volunteer) to maintain the bvarc website and the reflector.
Saying someone found your reflector post on a search engine means I am doing a
good job!!

that the club posts my info and I've asked them to remove certain things

Your email address is private on QRZ exclusively available to fellow hams who
are verified, they even go to the trouble of making you hover over the email
box with your mouse to avoid bots from scanning the pages.
This website I found has our complete emails. Why is that?!? I 100% understand
that what we say on the air is available to everyone to hear and I don't say
private things there. But I just kind of assumed the email list was private and
for club members only.
I was confused why it was posted publicly. Complete word for word our intraclub
emails. There's a boundary between using the ham bands and using email. It
would appear we use the reflector to discuss business such as having equipment
for sale, but we do not discuss that on the air per FCC rules. It's not even
really about my info, I know that the FCC and subsequently QRZ posts it.
I just don't like that our emails to each other are posted online. Again, I was
under the impression that our correspondence within the club was WITHIN THE
CLUB. I am unpleasantly surprised it's not.
It's an entire correspondence that's out there, not just name and email/phone
etc. Whatever we say is apparently available to a global audience. We may as
well be using a public forum rather than email. This is in my experience, not
the way email lists operate.
When I sent an email to a group at work, it only goes to the group, not to the
internet to be searched. Sure you can look up who a person works for, what
their work phone number is even, but you can't see their individual emails
related to work. That's my main issue. I have spoken to Mark Hardwick  and I
hope we can resolve this. Again the issue is not just that our signatures are
on the site, I am fully aware of how the ULS, QRZ, and BVARC post relevant
information. It's also mainly the fact that the full content of our emails is
available. Based on the responses, I'm not the only one concerned about that.
I'm not super angry here, I'm just concerned and confused. I hope that makes
sense.

Apologies for the confusion here. Our "welcome letter" email states:

You are currently publicly listed on our website's roster. If you wish to be
unlisted, let me know, and I can hide your information. We have a few members
who wish to do this for security reasons, but most of us remain public. If you
prefer to be unlisted, please let me know.

...but maybe that language should be updated to state explicitly that that
includes email address and phone number. Again, my apologies - I'm old enough
to remember when everybody's phone number and home address was in the phone
book delivered to every house in town, so I am perhaps less sensitive to having
that information out there. (I'm also a security-sensitive IT manager who's
had the same hotmail account for years and gets tons of phishing/spearphishing
attacks, which I routinely report and delete... I've also been SIM-jacked -
thanks, T-Mobile! - and had a couple of attempts at identity theft. But I
still have my cell phone number listed on my Facebook page in case an old
friend from high school or whatever wants to give me a shout...) A good BS
detector will keep you out of more trouble than multifactor authentication, a
trait that I desperately try to instill in my user community.

Kori, let me know what info, if any, you want hidden.

I have hidden William E.'s info and made Brad's phone number unlisted, as

operate. When I sent an email to a group at work, it only goes to the
group, not to the internet to be searched. Sure you can look up who a
person works for, what their work phone number is even, but you can't see
their individual emails related to work. That's my main issue. I have
spoken to Mark Hardwick and I hope we can resolve this. Again the issue is
not just that our signatures are on the site, I am fully aware of how the
ULS, QRZ, and BVARC post relevant information. It's also mainly the fact
that the full content of our emails is available. Based on the responses,
I'm not the only one concerned about that. I'm not super angry here, I'm
just concerned and confused. I hope that makes sense.

2021-02-03 Thread Michael Giannaccio via BVARC
I don’t really mind having my call sign, address, and email public. If you own
a home your address is public record anyway.

However I did not realize that every (I assume) email sent on this reflector is
archived and available to the public here:
https://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=all&q=BVARC.org

I think it’s important people know very clearly up front so they don’t
accidentally write an email they want available to the public. I’m not a big
fan of this being public but I can see utility of it.

After more than 50 years of ham radio, and due to my penchant for buying way
more than I usually need, I have amassed quite a collection of excess parts,

back to the ham radio community. Much of the materials are free for the asking,
however some of the more valuable items I would like to actually sell, but I
promise it will be for a good price. While I am not going to make a detailed
list of what I have here, if you send me a direct note off of the reflector(s)
with what you want or need I will respond with “come pick it up for free” or
with a cost. I can also ship USPS if you pay the shipping costs. If it is
small, I can stick it in a padded mailer for just a few dollars.

Initially I will give preference to new hams, especially those just getting
started or those getting back into radio after an extended absence. Need
something if particular?...just send me a note, I might have it. What I have
here includes:

   - Wire (various sizes, colors, etc.)
   - Cable (coax, coax jumpers. shielded cable, etc.)
   - Adapters of all sorts including RF, audio, etc.
   - Tools (Soldering Irons, hand tools, meters, etc.)
   - Antenna hardware and materials including aluminum tubing, insulators, SS
hose clamps, 316SS hardware, heavy duty cast aluminum saddles, guy wire, coax
seal, etc.
   - Parts (Ferrites, toroids, etc.)
   - Some equipment

No, I’m not getting out of radio or anything like that! I just have way more
than I need or will ever be able to use and want to help fellow hams who are
looking for particular things. This is my way of giving back to the hobby. Just
send me a note.

My email system screens new email addresses, so many of you may initially land
in my spam folder. I will check it on a daily basis. Please no phone calls or
reflector answers,  contact me direct at n...@arrl.net.

Re: [BVARC] Our email list is publicly available?!?!?!?!?

2021-02-03 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
William, et al,

As a long time Ham and BVARC member..I know that the club has in the
past deleted members info on the membership list, which IS public, at their
request. No problem. However, please remember that "Once you are a US
government licensed Ham, your call, address etc. is open to the world,
unfortunately. Plus, a little more digging on free sites gives you full
details on you (and me) etc.

I Googled your call, William, and no reference to BVARC came up, just as an
FYI... but all the rest of the normal, QRZ, FCC, Radio Reference sites,
etc. came up readily available outside of BVARC.

*If y'all are worried about privacy you should not be a government licensed
anything, as all of that data is public and available on-line.*

As an adjunct topicYou do know that anything you say or do on the
air -- HF, VHF, etc. is an open forum. Not only the hams participating in
the net can hear you but also scanner monitors and short wave listeners.
Case in point: We had a new member a few years back that was divulging
too much information on the repeater. Kids names, schools, times, etc and
much more. He was advised to cut back on the info discussed, and did,
thank goodness.

Initially I will give preference to new hams, especially those just getting

something if particular?...just send me a note, I might have it. What I have
here includes:

  * Wire (various sizes, colors, etc.)
  * Cable (coax, coax jumpers. shielded cable, etc.)
  * Adapters of all sorts including RF, audio, etc.
  * Tools (Soldering Irons, hand tools, meters, etc.)
  * Antenna hardware and materials including aluminum tubing, insulators, SS
hose clamps, 316SS hardware, heavy duty cast aluminum saddles, guy wire, coax
seal, etc.
  *   Parts (Ferrites, toroids, etc.)
  *   Some equipment

No, I’m not getting out of radio or anything like that! I just have way more
than I need or will ever be able to use and want to help fellow hams who are

pick it up for free" or with a cost. I can also ship USPS if you pay the
shipping costs. If it is small, I can stick it in a padded mailer for just a
few dollars.

Initially I will give preference to new hams, especially those just getting
started or those getting back into radio after an extended absence. Need
something if particular?...just send me a note, I might have it. What I have
here includes:

* Wire (various sizes, colors, etc.)
* Cable (coax, coax jumpers. shielded cable, etc.)
* Adapters of all sorts including RF, audio, etc.
* Tools (Soldering Irons, hand tools, meters, etc.)
* Antenna hardware and materials including aluminum tubing,
insulators, SS hose clamps, 316SS hardware, heavy duty cast aluminum
saddles, guy wire, coax seal, etc.
*   Parts (Ferrites, toroids, etc.)
*   Some equipment

No, I'm not getting out of radio or anything like that! I just have way more
than I need or will ever be able to use and want to help fellow hams who are
looking for particular things. This is my way of giving back to the hobby.
Just send me a note.

My email system screens new email addresses, so many of you may initially
land in my spam folder. I will check it on a daily basis. Please no phone
calls or reflector answers, contact me direct at n...@arrl.net
 .
