Hey Chong, Also consider using the duplicate() function when copying your structure.. [cfaussie] Re: Validating dates ... what's the trick?
Hi Mike, I used to use the 3 dropdowns method.. (now using jquery datepicker) but used mmm for the month value. Then validate something like this isDate(#day#-#month#-#year#) which evaluates to isDate(31-Feb-2009) There was no confusion between day and month this way.. Regards, Adam -Original Message- From: Mike Kear [mailto:afpwebwo...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, February 20, 2009 3:56 PM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Validating dates ... what's the trick? The problem is i'm building the date from 3 dropdowns for day, month and year, so the day dropdown has 1-31 on it. Therefore it's possible to select 31/Feb/2009. Then if you try to validate the date from the form, by feeding those three values into the LSIsDate() function, or the IsValid(Date) or any other date function, first of all you have to give those functions a date object. To do that you use createdate() which chunders if you give it 31/Feb/2009So therefore the function LSIHisDate can never be tested on an invalid date (which is its main purpose for living after all) . This same point applies to IsDate() and IsValid(eurodate, ... and IsValid(date, ... ) because they take a date object as an argument, and you can't create an invalid date object. Unless i'm missing something here, it seems that these date validation functions have no use. The way you check validity of dates is to either design the form so people can't enter invalid dates (e.g. using a date picker) and/or using try/catch around the createdate() function. [cfaussie] Re: Building a web service - can you pass in XML or should the arguments be data typed
Hi Matthew, I second Steve on the point below.. I have pulled out many a hair trying to get complex datatypes to send/parse correctly between different platforms. They work nicely between CF and CF, but try with CF and .NET and the 'fun' begins. Regards, Adam -Original Message- From: Steve Onnis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 2:07 PM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Building a web service - can you pass in XML or should the arguments be data typed All CF datatypes are converted to SOAP equivalents So it says but i have seen time and time again issues with the soap conversion and datatyping issues, especially with .NET Using XML you know exactly what you are getting. Thats my reason. -Original Message- From: cfaussie@googlegroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Matthew Sent: Tuesday, 11 November 2008 2:04 PM To: cfaussie Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Building a web service - can you pass in XML or should the arguments be data typed @Steve, thanks again for replying. CF can handle complex data types no problem. All CF datatypes are converted to SOAP equivalents (http:// livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/7/htmldocs/1547.htm#1186403). As per my latest post it just seems crazy to have to write an additional XML parser to deciffer the XML submitted by the client (you'd need a whole lot of validation logic as well). Same goes for sending the data back - why not just let CF covert the objects into their equivalent SOAP datatypes. I can't see any benefit for receiving XML packets and returning XML packets!?!?!? Can anyone comment on reasons to do this? Cheers Matthew On Nov 11, 1:55 pm, Steve Onnis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mathews Its either/or. I preferred the XML way so that's the way it was built. I guess what I was trying to say in my last email is there isn't a right/wrong way, just what ever fits better with what you are trying to do. Its easier to search xml than it is to try and parse arguments if some arguments are not required to be passed in. Also I don't know if you will have issues with things like passing in arrays and stuff into the web service because of the data types possibly not being maintained in the request. This is where XML is better as you don't need to worry about it and you can handle it all in your web service. I'll try to explain myself again. Perhaps there is a CF web service guru out there that can help? When building a web service, should the input arguments be a single XML document (which defines the input parameters) or should you just have an argument for each parameter. Or are both options acceptable? It makes more sense to me to have a argument for each parameter otherwise if you have an XML doc as the input you have to write your own XML parser / validator. This is all built right into CF when you choose access=remote. I've been doing a little more reading and noted that you can distribute your web service as an RPC (default in CF) or as document- literal style. I think the RPC system is the way I've been discussing and the document-literal style option is the alternative where you pass in a full XML document. Is RPC easier but compatible with fewer technologies? Cheers Matthew --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups cfaussie group. [cfaussie] Coldspring Best Practice
Hi All, I have started implementing Coldspring into an app I'm working on and I was after some opinions on the best way to call the beans. This is a fusebox 5.5 (noXml) implementation. My main aim is to avoid lots of 'unnecessary' code but keeping performance at a maximum. I think I have 2 primary options.. (Pros cons as I see them..) 1. Set all coldspring beans into local variable scope on every request in application.cfc !--- application.cfc --- cfset thisService = application.beanFactory.getBean(thisService) / cfset thatService = application.beanFactory.getBean(thatService) / ... 20+ beans Pros: Ease of maintenance, results in shorter syntax Cons: Possible performance hit 2. Set only the beans needed for the request in the controller and also make it available to the view templates !--- controller --- cfset var thisService = application.beanFactory.getBean(thisService) / cfset var thatService = application.beanFactory.getBean(thatService) / cfset event.setValue(myQuery,thisService.myMethod()) / cfset event.setValue(thatService, thatService)) / !--- view --- cfset myQuery = event.getValue(myQuery) / cfloop query=myQuery #thatService.formatMe(myQuery.column)# /cfloop Pros: All beans not copied to local variables scope every request Cons: More code to do the same job as scenario 1 Any comments appreciated. [cfaussie] Fusebox 5.5 vs Colddbox
Hi All, Just after any comments on anyone's experience with coldbox and particularly how it compares to fusebox 5.5 (With MVC design pattern). From what I have found, I can only find positive comments about coldbox. A couple of things that I find work against FB5: - Long fusebox.load times - Having to reload an application when new fuseactions are added to a circuit - The occasional 'corrupt' parsed file.. I'm not sure if FB5.5 has addressed any of these issues. Regards, Adam Chapman --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups cfaussie group. However, when the update form is used with the same value the html is rendered as: input type=text name=myField value=42 wheels / Notice that the value attribute is prematurely ended.. but seems to still render in the browser. But when the client does it, it doesn't. So there's something different about what the client's doing. The client's not what you'd call computer savvy, and isn't cutting and pasting from a word document so I dont think the problem is they're using the MS Word smart quotes (66/99) and I'm not. That's why I assumed the problem must be that they're using Vista (their computer is brand new) and it's putting a different character in the field for the double quote character. [cfaussie] Re: cfc - cfargument best practice
Hi Dale, Thanks for the reply.. I think I must have been a bit vague with my question, I already have the cfc set up using the DOA/Gateway model.. I guess I'm asking which of the 2 options for accepting a large amount of data is prettier.. or whether there are pros and cons of either which will make one more attractive than the other. You could write one generic class, lets say called Database.cfc Which could have methods such as select, update, insert etc. Then they could take paramaters such as you described in 2. This class is then generic and can be smart enough to update any table. If however you have a class called say Product.cfc And it deals only with products and it has an update method, then I would suggest option 1, as then the method constrains the required fields and can have intelligence. If you are really keen you could have Product.cfc extend Database.cfc Regards Dale Fraser http://dalefraser.blogspot.com -Original Message- From: cfaussie@googlegroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Adam Chapman Sent: Tuesday, 29 May 2007 10:54 AM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] cfc - cfargument best practice Hi All, I have the need to create a cfc method which will update a large number of db fields.. Hi Dale, I use it with the DAO/Gateway model.. mProduct (dir) productManager.cfc productDAO.cfc productGateway.cfc Only the productManager cfc is called by the application code.. the manager calls the relevant DAO/Gateway cfc depending on the function.. in this scenario all the productManager methods Are public and all other cfc methods are package. [cfaussie] Re: Fusebox question
Hi Ryan, If your model code was encapsulated in cfcs, you could name your queries in the controller.. this is how I do it. set name=qGetEvent value=#application.myQueriesCfc.getEvent(myArgument='value')# / Cheers, Adam _ From: Ryan Sabir [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, 25 February 2007 1:45 PM To: 'cfaussie@googlegroups.com' Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Fusebox question Thanks Robin, That all makes sense, but here's the bit I think I've missed... how do I specify the variable name the controller sets up for the view. At the moment in my model, a query looks like this: cfquery name=qEvent ..etc In this case the model itself is setting the name of the variable. How do I get the controller to specify this? Is it as simple as setting a request variable in the controller 'request.eventObjectName' and passing that down the line? That means I'll have to evaluate() it at run time, a possible performance hit. Or is there a FuseBox structure that can hold this object until its needed? thanks. _ From: cfaussie@googlegroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Robin Hilliard Sent: Saturday, 24 February 2007 4:43 PM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Fusebox question On 23/02/2007, at 1:55 PM, Ryan Sabir wrote: This seems to me to be breaking the whole modularity of my solution, as the view is expecting a query object named 'qGetEvent', in order to display its data. I feel like I've missed something fundamental in the Fusebox docs that will explain to me how to pass that query object down the line as a generic object, ratehr than a specifically named variable. Whats the trick? Hi Ryan, You have to have _some_ dependencies in an application to make it work, the trick is to eliminate the most harmful ones. Dependencies from the UI back to the business logic/data (as you have here) are fine, as long as the variable name the controller sets up for the view stays fixed - as long as the control stuff doesn't need to know anything else about the view you're fine. It's like using a post office box to send a letter to someone... (you don't know who and don't want to know) ...you agree on the format of the letter... (value objects, query column names and types) ...and a post office box. (a variable name). When you have a letter to send you drop it into the post office box, and you don't care or know if anyone picks it up. What you avoid doing this is having to address the letter to a specific, concrete individual... (this would be like rendering bits of html or calling a function or tag specific to the current incarnation of the UI) ...from the UI... (a flighty crowd with high staff turnover - UI and other interfaces change far more often than business logic) ...if you did that, you'd have to keep changing your process to address the letter, impacting your otherwise highly reusable letter addressing process. (i.e. your business logic) If this sort of analogy appeals and you'd like to hear more, this is pretty much an extract from my MAX Asia architecture talk that I'm repeating at WebDU next month. It's about MVC and Flex but applies to ColdFusion too. Cheers, Robin __ Robin Hilliard Director - RocketBoots Pty Ltd Consulting . Recruitment . Software Licensing . [cfaussie] Re: CFFTP limit?
Hi Ryan, We use cfftp heavily.. and query directories with thousands of files and have found post CF5 cfftp to be pretty good.. Though some of the error messages can be pretty vague at times.. especially when trying to configure a new connection. I agree with Bjorn.. check the directories exist and that you have permissions.. if all else fails, try connecting via the command line to see if you can get any more info.. [cfaussie] Re: SQL Error message explanation - whats this really mean ?
Hi Mike, It's a tedious task but I would start by removing the cfqueryparam one field At a time and see which one is causing the problem.. its likely going to be around the 5th input parameter. Once you have found the offending parameter, check the cfsqltype of the cfqueryparam and check the datatype of the value you are trying to insert. I have a feeling it will be a datatype issue. Cheers, Adam -Original Message- From: Mike Kear [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, 15 September 2006 4:05 PM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] SQL Error message explanation - whats this really mean ? I'm getting an error message during an insert when I use CFQUERYPARAM, that goes away if i remove all the CFQUERYPARAMs. The exact message is: [quote] [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Incorrect syntax near '@P5'. [/quote] Since there's no '@P5' in the insert query anywhere, I'm assuming it means something like parameter 5 is that right? so it's telling me that the 5th field in the insert is wrong (or somewhere close to it). If so I'm puzzled because there doesnt appear to be anything wrong with parameter 5, or the parameters either side or the ones either side of that. Can anyone tell me what the @P5 is really telling me? Hi Mark, I have done all that.. followed the sftp.cfc readme to the letter 1. Put the cfsftp.jar file on your web server. 2. In CFADMIN select Java and JVM from the server settings and add the full path to the cfsftp.jar file to the ColdFusion Class Path. e.g. c:\cfsftp\cfsftp.jar 3. Restart ColdFusion server. Then I get the error as described when calling the init() method of the sftp.cfc I have a fair bit of experience calling and using java with createObject, but only with calls to classes.. output = createObject(java,java.io.FileOutputStream).init() but not: jsch = createobject('java',com.jcraft.jsch.JSch) Cheers, Adam -Original Message- From: Mark Mandel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, 14 September 2006 12:08 PM To: cfaussie@googlegroups.com Subject: [cfaussie] Re: createobject() class not found You need to have your Java code in the ColdFusion classpath. I've been charged with making a web-visible reporting tool using the information in this system. we are not allowed to connect directly from CF to the sql database - there has to be a layer of abstraction between the web-visible server and the internal database. we've already done a version one, where we ran a seperate sql-server with linked views to the production sql-server. this has had many pitfalls, the main one being that you can't pass in parameters to a view - or link stored procs. basically we've had to make seperate views for each of the parameters that we wish to pass in (usually it's clientid, of which we only have about five at the moment) but it's a managability nightmare. so here's my question: how can i access the production db, either from the cf server or a separate db server, while still maintaining an abstracted level of security (and be able to pass in parameters)? There are about 3million records we're sifting through, so it's not practical to bring it into cf memory and filter from there. any ideas, for you advanced db guys? thanks grant --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups cfaussie group. Hi Grant, The wsdl renders fine in a browser so the problem doesn't appear to be at the amazon end. I pulled all my hair out when trying to consume a .net soap webservice with 'complex' datatypes. I spent ages on it with cfinvoke and createObject but got nowhere. I finally got it to work by building the xml request myself and posting it using cfhttp.. (a webservice is basically just an xml post via http anyhow) Then just parse the xml response with cf's xml functions and all is good.. it has been extremely reliable.
