[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1099133] Re: gnome nautilus 1:3.4-2 obuntu6 will not install
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running only once: apport-collect 1099133 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1099133 Title: gnome nautilus 1:3.4-2 obuntu6 will not install Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: installArchives() failed: (Reading database ... So I have had to say that I don't know where I found the bug.) This looks like a serious bug to me - others have confirmed this by repeating the test below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12296573#post12296573 *** Try to make a document link: Open Gedit - copy and paste a few bytes of text - save as 'AA-test' in your document dir. Open Nautilus and check your doc dir - yes it's there. Rclick it - 'make link'. What you now see is a new file called 'Link to AA-test ' - both are the same file size. Dclick the 'Link to' file and delete a couple of bytes (2 characters), and save. My sys is set to make bakups, so I now see: Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes The above is clearly incorrect cos my bakup file is called 'Link To' Now open 'AA-test' directly, and delete 2 more characters and save. I now see: AA-test 941bytes Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test~___ 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes It seems conclusive that 'make Link' is not functioning correctly. Further tests can be made, eg. rename 'Link To' - 'Linq To'. When you load it in Gedit, top-left informs you are working on 'Linq To AA-test'. Apart from this being confusing.. it looks like instead of having a small link file, my doc, and my bakup doc. I now have 4 full size docs wasting space on my HDisk. This is surely a bug no? [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1733410] Re: awfully slow to respond when drawing selection rectangle
Assuming Fix Released, please change the status back to New if you have the same problem on Ubuntu 18.04 or Cosmic, I agree with the Files developers, this feels like a problem elsewhere in the stack though I don't know how to prove this or where else in the stack the problem could be. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1733410 Title: awfully slow to respond when drawing selection rectangle Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Steps to reproduce: open a folder containing some files click on an empty zone of the window and start dragging as if you wanted to select some files Expected behavior: as you move the mouse cursor while holding down the mouse button, the selection rectangle should be continuously redrawn. This redrawing should happen at a very fast rate (like more than a dozen times a second at the very least) so you would have the impression it is "continuous". Also, this should consume an almost undetectable amount of CPU. Observed behavior: the rectangle is not redrawn until you stop moving the mouse cursor. If you keep moving the mouse cursor, it will never be redrawn at all! If you do stop moving the mouse as you normally do, you will get the impression that the animation is terribly jerky, as if the computer was doing too much work. CPU consumption reaches 100% while you move the mouse, whether or not the selection rectangle is redrawn. The developers upstream say this is not an issue in Nautilus itself (I wonder how they can be so sure). https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/127#note_8911 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: nautilus 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu6 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-98.121-generic 4.4.90 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-98-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_uvm nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.10 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Mon Nov 20 21:11:57 2017 GsettingsChanges: b'org.gnome.nautilus.window-state' b'sidebar-width' b'190' b'org.gnome.nautilus.window-state' b'geometry' b"'1301x716+406+119'" b'org.gnome.nautilus.list-view' b'use-tree-view' b'true' b'org.gnome.nautilus.list-view' b'default-column-order' b"['name', 'size', 'type', 'date_modified', 'date_accessed', 'owner', 'group', 'permissions', 'mime_type', 'where']" InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-10-11 (1501 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130424) SourcePackage: nautilus UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1733410/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The correct upstream bug for this is https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/117 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1730231 Title: Nautilus opens for every mediafile a seperate player when selecting a group of files and pressing Enter Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Expected behavior: The Player selected as standard opens with a playlist of the (media)files. Example: 10 mp3 files selected opens 10 player-windows of audacious, qmmp, vlc, mpv or what ever is selected as standard. (I did try all of the named programs) This happens only if the group of files is open via pressing Return or selecting 'open' in context-menu. Currently, Nautilus provides a fancy dancy button-representation of the hierarchy, where you can click the 2nd-to-right-most button to go UP a directory. But these buttons require more observation and mouse- movement versus repeat-clicking a good old UP button. Also, Nautilus currently offers a BACK button, but "back" doesn't always mean UP. Instead, I like to see the text representation of the path like this: /home/user/ Unfortunately, there is no way (I've found) to set my preference in Nautilus. To see what I'd prefer, you can go here in the menu: Files > Enter Location But there is no way to set this view as default. I do see certain advantages to the button-hierarchy method, in that you can click any button to go to a particular place in the hierarchy. But often I despise the fact that these buttons do not have enough room to display the complete path back to root. There needs to be a "View > Toolbars" (similar to options you'd see the Firefox). However, if the search box is already visible but does not have focus (for example, by tapping ctrl-f and then clicking outside the search box), then typing does not re-focus the search box. This is jarring since you can be looking at a normal view of a folder (not at search results), and out of habit expect that you can start typing to search. Even if you tap ctrl-f, this makes an empty search box *vanish*, so you have to tap ctrl-f *twice* to get it focused (or click on it of course) Solutions include: * Make an empty search box always vanish upon losing focus * Make an empty search box, if still visible, gain focus again if the user starts typing. The first solution is probably cleanest since there is no use case I can think of for leaving an empty search box visible if the user is not about to type into it. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1766100] Re: Desktop keeps showing files that are no longer there
I'm not able to reproduce this bug on Files 3.26.3-0ubuntu4 on Ubuntu 18.04 (at least, when downloading an image from Facebook to Desktop from Chromium 65.0.3325.181 (277) [snap]) so I'm assuming this is Fix Released, if you can reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 18.04 then please change this to New. It's not GNOME's responsibility to keep old versions of Files working on older (but supported) versions of Ubuntu, that is Ubuntu's responsibility, so this bug does not reflect on the alleged poor maintenance of Files. However if you think that the default file manager should not be GNOME Files then start a topic at https://community.ubuntu.com/c/desktop , other appropriate places would be #ubuntu-desktop on Freenode or the Ubuntu Desktop mailing list. You would need to give detailed reasoning why it should be abandoned though and clear evidence that it's not being well maintained, I've been forwarding bugs to the Files devs and they've actually been rather responsive (if I'm patient enough) so I think you would be hard-pressed to show that it's actually unmaintained despite all appearances! ;) A Bug Control member should nominate this bug for Xenial if they think that it should be fixed by Ubuntu in that. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766100 Title: Desktop keeps showing files that are no longer there Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Hours after downloading a few pdf files with Chrome into the Desktop and being done with them, I went to delete them. And indeed, when I went to download it, I got an error "Cannot move to trash. Delete it permanently?" So I chose "delete", and got an error again, that the file could not be deleted. I retried several times and finally looked at "details" and found out that the source of the error was "no such file or directory". So, the file was not there. So why the fuck was it being shown on the desktop if it was no longer there? I can assume it might happen some rare times (it's a bug anyway) that you for some reason "miss" when a file ceases existing, and hence it is still falsely visible on the desktop. But there should come a point where Nautilus "realises" the file no longer exists and stops showing it. In other words, the contents of the desktop should be "refreshed" from time to time or on certain events. And trying to delete a file, triggering an error that says that the file doesn't fucking exist, should be such a case where you refresh the information and stop showing a file that doesn't exist. It's pathetic that you keep showing it forever until I kill and restart nautilus or fucking reboot. I'm sick of reporting such idiotic bugs on Nautilus. Ubuntu, for fuck's sake, switch to some better, decently maintained file manager. Nautilus is CRAP. I can't reproduce this issue for MP3s but I can reproduce this issue for PNGs on Files 3.26.3-0ubuntu4 on Ubuntu 18.04. Example: 10 mp3 files selected opens 10 player-windows of audacious, qmmp, vlc, mpv or what ever is selected as standard. (I did try all of the named programs) This happens only if the group of files is open via pressing Return or selecting 'open' in context-menu. Daniel thanks for your work here to try and get this filed correctly. If the logs are different for me and for this bug then perhaps my bug is different? Ray Strode (upstream) thinks the key part of my log is ``` Apr 23 17:43:40 adam-thinkpad-t430 gdm3[2997]: GdmSession: Emitting 'session-opened' signal [...] Apr 23 17:43:40 adam-thinkpad-t430 gdm3[2997]: GdmSession: external connection closed ``` Chris A, please could you (as Ray suggested to me) put `Enable=true` (without backticks (``)) in the `[debug]` section of `/etc/gdm/custom.conf`, reboot, reproduce and post the updated logs? Maybe then we'll be able to see if this issue is the same as mine or not (and if not then maybe Chris A's problem needs a separate upstream bug). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766137 Title: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only) Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Trying to log into my session (Gnome, Xorg), if I enter the wrong password before entering it correctly, the session doesn't load and I get a purple screen, a mouse cursor, and an invisible but clickable menu in the top right. Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) reached end-of-life on July 23, 2015. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1362771] Re: No status bar of any kind indicating total number of files in a folder
Filed upstream: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/366 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1362771 Title: No status bar of any kind indicating total number of files in a folder Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Up to some time ago (I'd say pretty recently), when you opened a folder in Nautilus, there used to be a kind of status bar at the bottom indicating the total number of files. Long ago it used to be a proper status bar, which was the most functional and usable. But then of course I guess it looked too old-style, so it was replaced by the less functional and annoying "overlay" kind of status bar (imitating that of Google Chrome) on a corner, which would stay right on top of filenames and hide them, until you'd move the mouse over it so that it would move to the opposite side. A step backwards but at least there still was a status bar with the total number of files. Now it's gone. It only appears when you select some files, to show the name and size of the selected file (if it's unique) or the number and total size of selected files. But if you don't select any file, the total number of files in the folder is not shown anywhere. You have to select all, which is annoying. I don't know whether this is just a "classic" bug (meaning unintended behavior resulting from an error in code) or one more in a long list of demential "working as intended" design decisions that have been constantly degrading the usability and functionality of Nautilus in the recent years. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1635804] Re: short cut keys always showing
Upstream said in the upstream bug that it's a bug in GTK. 'there is a list of shortcut keys already available from the menu bar' this is not true because Files (in GNOME, at least) uses CSD? Perhaps this should be closed here and upstream as Won't Fix? ** Package changed: nautilus (Ubuntu) => gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu) ** Also affects: gtk via https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=773929 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1635804 Title: short cut keys always showing Status in GTK+: Unknown Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: as of 16.10 the shortcut keys are always showing in the right click menu.
