Howdy,

Perhaps you missed this;
There is an appendix found in each of the OASIS documents (from the
first email URL) which lists the changes from 1.2 for the items
covered in that part of the spec.

Or are you looking for something beyond that?

Well, I'm surprised by the answers and life is just to short to argue
over this type of thing.

OK - I'll drop the boilerplate stuff from the first two pages and
replace it with my own boiler plate.

That's it and the offer to you guys stands - you are welcome to any
part of this you have a use for.

Re: NLPSolver wiki page

2020-05-22 Thread Drew Jensen
To be more responsive:
The first 2 pages are basically just a copy of the old wiki page -
with edits to remove references that make no sense for us (ie no need
to install an extension).
The text in that section is also either generic information about
solvers or specific information on the two solvers from Sun. I've
added to it a section of generic information on CoinMP.

The tables with API interfaces has been reformatted for the Sun
Solvers and new information added for the other three supplied
solvers.

The example section is just about a total re-write. The example is 100% new.

NLPSolver wiki page

2020-05-21 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Last week I began looking at the documentation at the LibreOffice wiki
as it pertained to the Calc solver engines supported, and supplied by
the office suit. What I found was that the most prominent reference
was to a page back on the AOO wiki
ttps://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/NLPSolver

I thought it worth while to create a proper content page over on the
LibreOffice wiki, two main content reasons; 1st - the AOO is specific
to the NLP extension from Sun and wanted to expand it with information
on the five different engines available in a LO vanilla install
(w/java) of which the NLP engines are only two; 2nd - there is a link
to the SDK API documentation for the Solver service information which
needs to point to the proper SDK.

I decided to use the content from the AOO page as a jumping off point
and to change and expand it. A draft (nearly done) of that work is
available for review here:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/ebisHjZo2rowM4Q

Two reasons for this email.

Today in our documentation team meeting I was asked how you folks here
felt about me using the AOO content as the jump off text. I said I was
sure you wouldn't mind and that I would ask to be sure. So - this
email. (note I've kept the license information from the AOO page in
the new draft document with regards to the two NLP extension solvers -
with a minor change to the text, so please check that out)

Second - in the draft you will see that I've included a reference to
an MIT tutorial on solvers and supply a Calc file with a simple script
which executes the solver model from that tutorial. The example Calc
file with the script should work just fine with AOO and if you folks
are interested I would be happy to share this for use on the AOO wiki
page, or anything else in that draft change.

That is the long and short of it - questions/comments welcome and let
me know if you would like to use any of the content on the wiki here.

Best wishes,

Drew

Should of put this in one email
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=kde ./soffice actually makes it a bit more pronounced.

Re: macOS and AOO42X

2020-04-29 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

I fired up the binary for Linux under Ubuntu 18.04 (KDE/Plasma)
Having an issue with menus.
For most of them, start center and module top level menus, there is an odd
delay when they open where the frame for the menu is drawn and filled with
garbage for a second or so and then the menu item appear.
Some of the menus seem to have a bit more of an issue then others.
This particular start center menu is the worst, and the garbage remains
until I move the mouse cursor inside the menu frame and only then does the
menu items correctly display.
Anyway - two screen shots to show you what I mean.

Re: Unsuccessful test of AOO 4.5 from buildbot output

2020-02-25 Thread Drew Jensen
Just download the 4.5 files (no sdk, just the main application w/en_us )
Did a parallel install on Ubuntu 18.04 KDE/Plasma
Install went fine.
Ran a couple of largish writer files into it, did a little light editing -
no problems.
Created a quick small Impress file (no animation) and no problems.
Installed Oracle Report Builder extension - ran a couple of example dbs
with macro controlled report generation - no problems.
Calc; made a quick little spread sheet with a graph, really simple - no
problems.
Then I opened an .xls file I use for testing calculations performance and
ran into a bit of an issue.
Compared to 4.1.6 the file required noticeably more time to load compared
to 4.1.6 (2 sheets, data sheet has 18,048 rows of data)
Forced a recalculation of the full sheet and here version 4.5 was much
worse performance wise over the 4.1.6 version.
4.1.6 takes just a tad but less then 4 minutes to finish and 4.5 took over
6 minutes.

Anyway, hope that feedback helps.

Best wishes,

Drew

One follow up on this - while it is in front of me.

It appears the last time a file under the AOO tree was updated was in third
quarter 2017 and those appear to be work files and 'not published' final
docs.

IMPORTANT: March 31st, 2019 deadline for deactivation of old ODFAuthor Plone service

2019-02-21 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy folks,
I has been a while since I've said hello on you mailing list.
Reason for doing so today is, as the subject says, regarding the ODFAuthors
website which had been used at one time by folks developing documentation
for both LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice.
As you can see the Document Foundation, which has been hosting the site,
is looking to move away from it and currently looking to shudder the
service in an expeditious fashion. March 31, 2019 being at a minimum the
date on which the server will be read only.
What follows is a copy of an email that went out to the Document
Foundation's documentation mailing list last week.

Hello Authors

In order to optimize our resources in many aspects (manpower, security,
hardware) we started last year the migration of some documentation
communities to the NextCloud service.

https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org

To the date, the EN, DE, FR, ES, pt-BR, IT, NL and TR documentation
communities have open folders in NextCloud and started to move data
from old ODF Author Plone to the new repository in NextCloud.

I ask the remaining community leaders to start the migration process so
we can keep March 31st, 2019 our deadline for freezing and deactivating
the plone service.

The migration is no more complex than recreating the same folder
tree of the NL community in the NextCloud service and moving the
files to the new service. Of course, as when moving to a new home, you
may want to do some housekeeping on the contents.

We will also move AOO / OO.o files to our NextCloud just in case.

The old ODFAuthor plone service will be handed shutdown and archived. No
loss of data expected.

More on NextCloud at TDF:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/ODFAuthorsMigration

kind regards

--

As part of the process I was tasked with be responsible for maintaining a
copy of the published files currently under the AOO and OO.o directories on
the plone server over on the next cloud service mentioned above. This is
just to ensure that they are saved in a place which could offer public
access long term.

In starting this process I have scanned through the files on the OADAuthors
site and have found a number directories marked as private (which is in
addition to a flag 'not published). I wanted to talk with folks here first
and get your guidance on how best to proceed.

My guess is there are questions - and I'll do my best to work with you on
those through the mailing list here.

Thanks for you attention to this and in advance for your time.

Best wishes,

Drew

Hi Kay,

Yes, that was the idea exactly, and with that in mind, I figured it would
be worth varying the opening graphics a bit - so I did (am).

Will license these as CC 3.0 BY-SA , without the NC rider, given that I
have no music track, so folks could, as far as I'm concerned use these
any way they see fit.

Actually, it might be worth running the common license screen by the list
before the final renders - will put that together now and post back to this
thread with a link. Then finish up the sequencing, bit hold on the final
render till tomorrow for any feedback on that license/credits graphic.

+1, thats a real good idea, there would be no need to close the forum,
simply clean the user base older than e.g. 3 month and see if the spam

FWIW I would close and remove the site. The real problem is lack of
interest by users. The VI user activity never really was adequate to

Documention - sort of

2013-10-30 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy folks,

First I want to thank Jean Weber for making this email possible.

Recently I had need to work on a document regarding AOO for a disk project
I'm working on and I wanted to use an existing resource from the ODF
Authors group, specifically the custom template used to generate the user
guides the group produces. That template was (is) dual licensed
GPL/CC-BY-SA 3.0.

What I wanted however was the option to license the derived work under he
Apache license - so using the original template as, ah a template, I
proceeded to make some changes, but in the end the text which describes how
to use it was predominantly from Jean.

I just got the email from her giving me permission to re-license my updated
file and I will make this new template available to the project dual
licensed as Apache 2.0 and CC-By-SA, which will allow anyone basing a final
work on the template to license as either or both.

So, a few quick questions for the group here.
Easy one first- the template includes a contact email for reporting any
problems or suggestions, the original listed the ODF Authors discuss
mailing list and I would assume for this new one he right answer is this
list, yes?

Location - since I'm still a bit out of the loop is there a spot on either
wiki where folks would want this?

Copyright - The original template is set to default to a copyright for ODF
Authors, I assume (oh such a bad word) that here the copyright would be
left to the author(s) and not the ASF or maybe so, or maybe so sometimes..
??

So - the template is ready to go and I'll wait for response(s) to those
easy questions and look to post it up when next I'm tethered to the global
tracking system next ;)

Well, it rather depends on what you are trying to do - I doubt that in this
instance it would make much sense. Anyhow, it is rather a different subject
from the listing itself, and on that note (the listing) I did not mean to
say I had objection.

Change of Subject - I note, or so it appears, that Symphony is no longer
available or at least not for download. There where a few ancillary
artifacts, some key board shortcut sheets and a few small tutorials which
had been available from the old Symphony site and seems to have no links to
the newer web page - any chance you employer would allow someone to update
those for AOO 4 and make them available on the wiki here? [perhaps I should

Howdy Rob,

Ah trademarks - yes, I agree the Apache OpenOffice should have a TM, a la:
IBM® Lotus® Symphony™ is a suite of open source office applications.

A couple of quick questions if I may.
Will the support only be available to those with the IBM connectors? IIRC
that was the plan in the past.

Also, does IBM have any plans to list AOO support on the United States GSA
registry? This was available in the past but not available for the last few
years.

Sorry, but appearance is imho not so much the issue here, but rather

Yes, that is formal, but how else should this be handled?

  It would suggest the entire

It does not have to be in the headline. Put identification in continuous

AOO on Nexus 7 and the Kim Komando Show

2013-10-21 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

For those who do not know who Kim Komando is, she hosts a rather successful
radio talk show dealing with digital consumer products.

This last weekend's show included a call in about speech recognition and
OpenOffice, and the Nexus 7.

The host explained that they would be putting up a quick tutorial on their
website, www.komando.com/ , showing hot to hook this up on the Nexus 7.

So - does AOO actually run on a Nexus 7, I really don't know and if their
is any known problems does anyone happen to have a contact with the show so
that we could help them put this together.

certain that it would be welcomed, so if you would be interested in

Howdy Guys,

Well, I was planning on posting to the Google + account regarding this
today. Decided after reading this that maybe I should hold off.. but maybe
not.. anyway what I had ready to post is:

Một cuộc hành trình dài.

A little bit of news. The Vietnamese User Forum for Apache OpenOffice has
been on a respite of sorts since being shuttered a while back, waiting for
someone to take on the task of monitoring and moderating the site.

Mr. Phan Anh, who is also active with the Vietnamese translation work in
the AOO project has volunteered to fill this position, making it possible
to open the forum for general use once again.

It is very good to see this community resource open once more. It is
individuals such as Mr. Anh that make our community work, for all of us and
I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his efforts, and to
also thank the many, many others who also 'get it done' in the AOO
community.

is to view all systems on a connectivity continuum, with even embedded
system designers viewing connectivity as a de facto requirement.

This is pushing much, most more likely I believe, of the commercial work
and IMO many FOSS projects towards pure SAAS offerings. This is not only
manifest in the applications/tools developed but also in the secondary
materials produced. (on-line vs delivered help files, for example)

It also seems, to me, natural that this evolution towards ubiquitous
connectivity continues is both driving and being shaped by the shift in
type of computing devices entering circulation.

How all that IMO applies to the AOO project is this, as I was looking over
some of the earlier marketing material from the OO.o project with an eye to
re-drafting it for the current AOO project it appears to me that some of
the value proposition arguments put forward are less strong today.

I was then looking to find additional ideas, attributes, which could be
used to base new value propositions on and/or as differentiating points.

It seemed to me that given the current activities in the development world
the fact that AOO is/was designed from the ground up to work fully, with
all features, in an environment not requiring connectivity to public
communications networks might be such an attribute, at this time.

Certainly it is not a core point, but I do believe there is real value in
this attribute to groups of prospective users and would be worth at least
some attention as materials for the project are generated.

Thanks - and that was rather a lengthy reply...see what happens when one
does this off-line, sighting there with a mice warm, fresh, cup of coffee.

I don't (totally or even really) disagree. And I like that you don't cave
to the obligatory use of cloud. But I also think it's not really needed
to focus or emphasize the desktop element. Most large-scale users (public,
private enterprises, offices, whatehaveyous) will opt for the desktop
compleat suite because one or two or more of the modules are needed by
their users and a mobile alternative wouldn't work very well, at least not
if what you did for a living was working on big spreadsheets.

But if you are a student, the idea of desktop might just confuse: is a
laptop a desktop? And does this mean that ODF files (whatever they are) can
only be edited (created, edited) on a desktop?

Put another way, if you want to emphasize the robust and completeness of
the suite, and also its expandability, via extensions, great!

And then also showing how mobile apps can tie into this extant network of
users only adds icing to the cake…. no?

Hi Phan, Imacat, Janl, et al

Just now getting back on-line since the last email here. I haven't gone by
the forums yet Imacat but I'm quite sure all is well. As for Terry's
account, it seems to me it should of gone also. Same for my account, there
is no good reason, which I can see, to have admin rights at any of the

@Janl, yes I should be hitting the forums more (easy to do 'more' since I'm
starting at zero) but I don't really need admin rights to be useful there -
and if I did become active, seeing something where such rights could be put
to use, well then I can always ask for them. It seems to me to be the
better way to go, rather then having long dormant accounts.

@Phan - thank you for taking this on, it is very good to see the site open

Howdy Samer, et al

Nice stuff - I think perhaps I'm in the minority, looking over the
responses, but I rather like the rounded (Exploration 2) icons -
particularly as depicted in Win 8.

Rounded or squared however, they are all a fresh breath.

Gulls - I understand about many wanting to loose them. I think the iconic
value is rather high though with existing brand recognition. That I suppose
can be maintained else wheres in project/application resources.

Just curious, with these new icons would you consider them high contrast or
would you expect that the project (you, I suppose ;-) would need to also
produce HC equivalents for whichever set is selected?

Thanks for your work here, very much so

Re: Reopening the Vietnamese Forum

2013-10-09 Thread Drew Jensen
Hi Guys,

Well, the spam had been removed before it was locked, so that should not be
a problem.

The existing user accounts - those could be disabled, yes of course.

So - I understand there is a new person to act as the admin and that is the
reason for the re-opening, which I think is great BTW. I take it from the
earlier email that the new admin still needed to setup their account on the
en forum...or not, I don't know really - kind of a problem having me in
this loop, as I have no internet access on a regular basis and as you can
see am not able to get connected every day.

Anyhow - I just jumped over there and logged in - yup my account still
works - but imacat has all the same access rights.

Which brings me to my account - honestly it is not a good idea to leave an
admin account laying around unused like that - I had expected imacat to
delete it. I'm saying that purely from a good practices stand point.

Here we are though. I'll be on-line a few times this week and if this needs
doing (delete old accounts, etc) certainly I'll help with that -
afterwards, given my circumstances it does not make a lot of sense to leave
the account laying around dormant, as I already said :).

*laughing* just give me marching orders and I'll carry them out

Do you already have a blog account? If not, start a new thread and
propose yourself as an editor, to get lazy consensus. Then you can
open a ticket with Infra per these instructions:

 http://www.apache.org/dev/infra-contact#what-we-need-to-know

Then we can give you editor rights to the blog.

As for the photos, I'm not sure I had any deep thoughts here. The
fact that they are vintage photos was primarily a result of seeking
interesting, fun, relevant, public domain images that could be used on
the blog. So that led to Flickr Commons which aggregates such imagery
from various national archives and libraries. But I'm open to other
 ideas.

OpenOffice 4.0.1 in Vietnamese was released a few days ago. Now it would
be a good moment to reopen the Vietnamese forum, and consider Vietnamese

I see that the topic at

All we need now is that Mr. Phan Anh registers on both

Then we can reopen the forum and put a short announcement on

Re: CD

2013-10-05 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy Edgardo,

Well, the project doesn't maintain a CD any longer, in fact it never had
one that a person could ask for though it would hand them out at
conferences (also a thing of the past), the disk image was simply available
for download.

I suppose you need this disk image ASAP? There is a disk image from an
older release which I could update to 4.0.1 fairly quickly, it would not be
from the project and I could not make it look like it was and you would
have to buy it (~5.00 US) on the upside I could include additional items
(extensions) that the project will not include.

So, if you could wait a week perhaps I could help, but no sooner then that.

2013-10-04 Thread Drew Jensen
Hi,

I understand, and in the general think sharing a room like that would be
for the better. I only think that in the particular here the old warning
that 'familiarity breeds contempt' is apropos. Anyway, I have no
expectation that I could convince both organizations to respectfully
decline the offer and abstain from attending though I firmly believe that
would be best, so I'll make no more mention of it.

Of course I will offer to help produce materials as needed and hope for the

Even separate projects can share best practices, test cases, test
documents, localization standards... I see nothing bad in doing this.

FOSDEM explicitly says that they reserve the right to aggregate projects
similar in scope in the same devroom, and if they had received applications
from other ODF-based suites they would probably have aggregated them too.
Aggregation does not mean that they want the projects to merge, but simply
that they feel that projects can share experiences and ideas productively.

Re: A little more eye candy for 4.0.1 release

2013-10-01 Thread Drew Jensen
Thanks,

I hope, if it is not too much trouble to get you to switch to the one I'm
uploading now - not only does it fix the problem on the closing screen, but
it also finishes the matting work to remove the final bitmap graphic - and
I really thought the yellow rays didn't quite meet the high standard for
the project. I'll post the new one directly to the AOO G+ site.
[Have cc'd Roberto as I'm not sure what the mailing list will do to that
style attachment

I also re-did the wallpapers, again so they where of appropriate quality.

Thinking that I've gotten close to doing what I set out for, and that is to
take a first stab at merging the color languages used in the AOO Logo
(Blue/White/Grey) and the ASF feather logo.

The best example I think are the new wallpaper designs (which I think will
also make for great opening screen on the next video, back to do the 4.0
release notes finally) and the second page on the print piece ThreeUP-GI.

well I still don't seem to be able to edit cwiki - I saw someone else
mention it yesterday, so I'll be patient and keep using google for today.

Here is the updated and IMO so much better video..

AOO_401-Daisies-svg.mp4https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IQ2FXbFBwTWw5Rlk/edit?usp=drive_web

and I'm off to write up the G+ post - talking about how it is almost
entirely constructed in AOO 4.0.1, exported to SVG and mixed in OpenShot -
with InkScape and Gimp appearing in supporting roles - the power of FOOS ;)

The new wallpaper files are worth a look also - so be sure to check out the
AOO G+ community page later (w/in the hour).

@Rob - if you would not mind I would very much like to work with you on the
blog, I've got some ideas on how to work with the B/W photos, wouldn't be
surprised if my thoughts are not too far from what is behind your choices
there - but better in a different thread and maybe on the marketing list,
don't know. Let me know though if I can help with that, OK.

Thanks

2.0, all parts are original and based on artifacts either in the
distribution or from the project site; The compressed file is still 10 meg
to large for the wiki however, so for today it is there on gdrive.

The source is three draw files and one gimp file, will wait for any
comments requiring a change and after none will zip them up and place on
the wiki under AL2 also.

As for the webart and wallpaper files from the other day - I will update
those on Monday with files matching the look of the video screens.

.02 on the theme as it is (or template perhaps)
- It is predominantly a duo-tone of the logo blue and white [the mat, the
explorer guy in the lower right corner]
- the logo stays in the lower left
- the upper right uses application/tool icons to designate what a video, or
section, is regarding
- the lower right is used for 'campaign' specific information
Font is so far Open Sans 100%
Colors:
Logo Blue
Yellow 3
Red 7

so, it is a start I believe at least.

Thanks,

//drew

Re: Where can I find the new AOO4-Logo as a vector format?

2013-09-28 Thread Drew Jensen
Hi Rob,

I agree with you on the source vs shared distinction of a logo and that is
precisely why PNG is good for sharing and why SVG, after changing from font
text to path [polygons] is also good. One good SVG, as graphic, covers many
PNG files for others to use to get top quality results in their work - IMO

And we still get many visitors using older browsers, even I.E. 6.
 So
I'd recommend using a rasterized version of the logo on the website
 or
anywhere else we expect random users to visit. There are ways of
having both SVG and raster images, but if we're not seeing consistent
SVG rendering then it would be safer to just render via Inkscape and
   use that.

There is a way to have a uncritical SVG version - just convert all
 text
  to
polygons first (and use absolute polygon paths, e.g. in inkscape).
 That
version would be safe since it would not use any font references, only
graphics (polygons). Relying on font rendering in SVG does simply not
  work
for multiple different systems, versions of these and even evtl.
  different
   languages and installed fonts.

That might fix this one issue, but what about older browsers like I.E.
6? Will the logo render perfectly everywhere? We have challenges
getting even HTML and Javascript to work right everywhere. I don't
think we want to risk having our brand image rendering poorly. We've
gone 12 years with a raster logo on the website. It works.

I think you are confusing the render on the browser with using this as a
web design element. SVG have been around for ages, the fact that this
 user
asked for a vectorized version (to use for whatever reason) and he happen
to notice an issue on the browser, doesnt mean his intentions is to put
 it
  on the page.

It is a reasonable assumption that the mention of the rendering on the
 browser was not unrelated.

That said, I strongly think we should switch to SVG, natively, is much
  smaller, and more open.

PNG = ISO/IEC 15948. So it is an open standard as well. As for
encouraging the propagation of our logo in an easily reusable vector
format, I don't agree with that. I think we should keep the source to
the logo rather controlled and make raster versions of it available
 for approved purposes.

 -Rob

There are also many fallback libraries like svg.js and modernizr for
 older
browser. IE6 1% of the market. I think we have bigger issues that are
 not
working on the site than 1% of the visits.

Finally after 27 hours up time (I crashed and got some sleep) for the AOO

Re: University Student Promotional Flyer ( was: Re: Yet another flyer)

2013-09-20 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Wanted to update those file on confluence, apparently I'm unable with my
account, to delete attachments I've uploaded, (so I take it from reading
the Atlassian docs) which sorta makes sense I suppose, but I can update
them and with that.

Updated the three-up card piece at:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/34022580/ThreeUp_GI_rays2.pdf
[note I seem to have not copied the odt file to the thumbdrive, so that
update will need to wait till Monday]
This piece is constructed with 6 independent frames so that it would be
easy for someone to use it and generate a full page of any single card
design.

Also added this file, as a proposal for a general branding motif I would
like to use going forward with this small set of items:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/34022580/oRBS.pdf

ALSO - that would be my proposal for an NGO focused piece, if the text
seems familiar..it should as I borrowed from the WHY web pages.

The question was asked how this brochure would look in Grayscale (off a
copier I assume) so part of the change in graphics design was to
facilitate that and here is rough estimation of how that would look:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/34022580/oRBS.png

Finally, I added to possible web graphics using the ORB as motif:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/34022580/AOO-4_0_1-explore_blog.gif
and
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/34022580/AOO-4_0_1-explore.gif

Unfortunately they don't look so great after Google enhances them...arrgh,
so updates for both on Monday.

Thanks

Howdy,

Just thought I'd touch base on this - if anyone has a contact at Amazon,
and after the dust settles from the release, perhaps a nudge to get them to
update their sales page to 4.0.1. It appears to still be dishing up, or at
least promoting, 3.4.

Re: AOO Flyer_SME (was : Yet another flyer)

2013-09-17 Thread Drew Jensen
Actually I'm not, that is the Apache official logo in EPS format - if the
PDF is created with lossless format it does not render so well, if the JPEG
lossy format is used you will see (and do in the last pdf) a marked
difference. However, the lossless pdf printed at 300 DPS shows off the
feather just fine - without the huge stroke (that is what makes it look
black) as displayed in some readers.

I had noticed it too; you are using a black and white version of the

Re: AOO Flyer_SME (was : Yet another flyer)

2013-09-12 Thread Drew Jensen
OK - followed your advice and as usual it ended up better for it.

Here is the 'final' pdf (I generated this with jpeg vs png graphics hoping
might look better with google drive, but not really)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IM3IyRllwRlNnT2M

The odt file is here
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IVUs4dGUwbFpkdUk

For my part I'll treat this as finished, I'd like to get back to some other
things this weekend - not the least of which are getting some 'dog food'
notes sorted from putting this together and some time checking the bug
tracker. Nothing in my notes looks like a show stopper for 4.0.1 (and I'll
grab the latest snap shot today and try to do it all one more time) with
the possible exception of exporting to PDF with the tagged option set. The
last couple of odt (of this flyer) that I uploaded will crash my
installation of AOO each and every time if I try to export with that set,
but I can do so with text only documents just fine - so I will take some
time in the morning to see if I can find what specific item is the culprit,
before I make an entry in bugzilla.

Thanks Jürgen

Oh, one thing - I don't really understand the comment about the color logo,
wondering if I'm really being dense on something as I thought this was the
color logo.

I was thinking that as an example the university student flyer might be

I've run AOO performance GUI test on my own machines. I've tried on one
platforms: Windows 7. The test configure is as follows:

Test Environment: CPU:2.6 GHz; Mem: 8GB; OS: Windows7
 Test Build: AOO.4.0.1_r1518667; Baseline AOO4.0_r1503704
Test Evaluation Method:Automatically run each test case 8 times and compute
the average value of 5 times (excluding the first round result, the minimum
 and maximum result).

The test scenario include: Slideshow, new AOO file, load file and save.

Volunteers could run performance test on other platforms.

Please Post PVT Report in Wiki
 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/PVT_Report

All the automation scripts could be downloaded in AOO project. And it is
not difficult to set the automation environment. You could follow the
 guide:

 *[Automation Development Guide]*
 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/test_automation_guide

 [how to run PVT]
 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/PVT

 Reminder:
1.Be sure that we should keep the test configuration unchanged between
 build to build.
2.PVT of AOO consists of two parts: GUI and UNO. PVT GUI Testing (run
pvt.gui.benchmark) and PVT UNO Testing (pvt.uno.Conversion)

I started on an SME (which I suppose is Small /Medium Enterprise) piece,
it's not that far along with respect to the Why column - but I did make a
change to the graphical content, based on Juergen's comment regarding
icons. So I'll put this up to google also, it's a throw back again to 2.0
branding, with the new color.

Anyway - SME is too broad for my purpose here and I will work tonight to
focus a bit more on:
Clerical staff and part-time elected officials in very small
municipalities, which is the demographic of the room where my friend will
be pitching his services..

As always - I don't own this stuff, feel free to make it better...

University Student Promotional Flyer ( was: Re: Yet another flyer)

2013-09-04 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Alright, I wanted to focus on specific users or scenarios regarding this
printed promo material - the earlier flyer skewed towards large user count
scenarios, so went towards the other end of the spectrum.

Started with the persona of an individual student, decided that was too
broad also - College students, also thought this too broad - so, settled my
focus on an Individual university student / teaching aid / professor,
likely not in the CS field (not looking for developers here, it is for all
intent a sales/marketing piece), is at the point in the academic career
where the power features of the tools are being needed and I would think
they are (or want to believe they are) socially responsible.

Anyway, as you can see I'm in long winded mode - short of it
Here is the PDF of what I think is the first finished piece/ First Draft -
I tried to put this on confluence BTW, but am having problems logging on,
I'll try again later on that - for now here it is on google again:

ODT
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IVmJ3QzVDNjQyaHc

So - If someone wants to move it to the cwiki, please do, hmmm Apache
license of couse [suppose I should add that in the properties, huh?]
otherwise I'll try reseting my password there again, later.

As for content - well, what do you think? I know you all can help make it
better.

Next up SME...

Re: Where can I find the new logo (svg) usable in AOO

2013-08-30 Thread Drew Jensen
Hi Guys,

On this issue - I believe the (one of) problem is they way superscript is
being handled - it breaks the text after any superscript. Of course the
browser code is a factor also - I have some examples of SVG outputs from
AOO4 and different browsers, really the only browser that consistently
renders the file the way it was intended to be seen is Opera, Firefox is
next closest and Google..'also ran' - but the one thing that seems to
really be broken is handling superscript characters.

OK, and then it would be great to make a reference SVG version of the

other programs... If the one with embedded fonts has some special
advantages it can stay, but the reference version should be as compatible

2013-08-30 Thread Drew Jensen
I will not be able to upload any large files today, so must wait on this
another few days..

I will let you know though that I put together half a dozen small pieces
and as I looked at them it was clear that I had totally missed the mark
Look and Feel wise - so I tossed it all and started over - first going back
to some print work (the flyers) and then back to the video side and changed
from a baisc duo-tone of Blue/Black to Blue/White. (Actually I would call
the logo color Teal, but I'm a guy and so likely color blind ;)

Anyway - I've scooped up the emails from a few weeks back and will review
them at home and with luck will get back to a connection point much more
quickly this time.

Re: New Features and Enhancements video

2013-08-08 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy folks,

Well, kind of a long 2-3 days..

I've done some work on content creation, but right now wanted to look
firstly at an overall focus and appropriate motif/themes for the project.

Following are the beginning of that work - I have a free weekend coming up
and plan to have the first real draft of the two documents finished by
Monday - along with some examples of how to apply the motif and themes.

So - if folks want to comment on what is here, great, but you may like to
hold off till I post up the finished first draft and examples.

Media Library Motif/themes
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0Ia3VBQU9RUDJkdWs

One of the over arching goals of this is to put in a place a defined set of
artifacts and work process so that collaboration can easily take place, for
example.
Volunteers can focus on content creation, without much if any concern on
branding as the content would then be 'wrapped' into the branding by
applying a theme and defined final presentation layout.

The motif should also work for content such as video from conference
presentations, use with video conferencing systems such as Google Hangouts
and in the examples on Monday it will address the Google Hangouts use
directly.

Final note, when you look at the second document don't get too wrapped up
with the secondary graphics, mostly it's just working out layout rules and
the like.

I will be back on-line again then on Monday, or possibly Tuesday next week,
but no later then that.

 I agree it's a good idea and I had the same ... But I wasn't able to

But in general I think we should establish our own YouTube channel where
we provide screencasts and other media files on a regular basis.

Important is that we use a common framework and Drew started in this

We need a common credit section for the end of all media files, with

A common intro section would also make sense, or maybe a collection of
1-5 different including seasonal ones like a Christmas branded intro or so.

Screencast are better than a slideshow, at least if possible we should

a native speaker with a good voice can provide a related spoken
explanation to the screencast (Drew's voice sounds well to me).

we can have both music sections (with hopefully different music ;-)) and
voice over sections where a clear voice give explanations.

  include the
OpenShot and Pitivi (and other) project files, it would include some
instructions (which we would build as we do this) on how to make use

  material.

This would be perfect. At the moment we don't have many OpenOffice 4
specific materials, so any well-done videos/graphics are welcome.

yes and with some more experience it should be really fun to produce
stuff like this ... I tried to play with iMovie on my Mac (see my very
 first attempts http://people.apache.org/~jsc/test/AOO40_Test.mov) and I
 just played around a bit...

Re: New Features and Enhancements video

2013-07-30 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Well, I'be not had a chance to read any mail, after my last message, before
writing this so if it seems like I've missed something already mentioned
that would be the reason.

I've been plowing ahead with my ideas here; not just as a single activity
to produce one or two videos but rather to start a framework for a project
multi-media resources library, from which multiple videos, for multiple
purposes, would be generated. It could also be used to generate themed
artifacts for fliers/presentations/artwork(wallpapers, etc) that tie in
with these videos.

The key is to generate small chunks, of high quality, which can then be
used to mix final works.

By way of example I've uploaded a zip file at:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0ISV9GcjY5M1l1TTA

with the following files:

July30/Chunks
- AOO4_default_blk.mp4 and AOO4_default_white.mp4 are (should be, more on
that later) used as consistent backgrounds in other chunks

- WelcomeUsers.mp4, NewLogo.mp4, CommunityActivities.mp4,
CommunityActivities.mp4 where created as a reshaping of the wiki features
and enhancements page.
- Each video includes a voice over (almost) and there is an associated text
file with transcript of same.

For the initial finished product I had in mind three category of video and
one physical video for each category.
The categories I had in mind are

Flowers - as in 'Congrats on the new birth' - short, punchy and could
supply the ending of the other videos to tie them together and for re-use
efficiencies.

Community - The apache way, recruiting, etc.

Features - about the product or services offered by the community.

Alright, so I already turned in a 'flowers' type video last week [and since
no one else has said it, a not so good one] but do not consider that the
final work.

For the 'community' category - These pieces:
CommunityBeforeCode_loop.mp4, suitable for use at a show table running on a
laptop, voice over, no musical background - notice I did not tag this with
a license.
AOO4_HotTamaleBaby.mp4 and hottamale.mp4 take that basic loop and add a
little party music.

For the 'features' category - These:
NewFeaturesAndEnhancements_loop.mp4 - again, voice over only, note no
license
AOO_Features_Waltz.mp4, add a nice sound track and pickup my license tag,
notice I said MY license tag, I think that is the best way to approach
these pieces with CC license material - but that is a subject needing some
thought gong forward.

In the graphics directory, well, graphics files ;) - some descriptions to
follow.

So, my vision would be to at the end deliver, somehow, for the projects use
an ISO with all the files used to produce the works, this would include the
OpenShot and Pitivi (and other) project files, it would include some

There is a fair bit here to consider, I'm aware, and I will end this mail
here. I should be picking up mail again in 2 or 3 days and will also have
an update to the files.

I would also like to offer, and have started, a second video.
 Longer,
   45 -
90 sec. range, with a quick summary of new features. A little
  different
audiance from the shorty here, I suppose. To start that I've

all
the information from the release notes page on the wiki, have used

generate some raw screen video catpure for the GUI changes and will

This would be very good to have. I don't know of anyone else working

 Hi Drew,

This looks really great, but as a note I had to run the mp4 through a
convertor program to play it on my MacOSX 10.6.8.

release media files

2013-07-19 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy Folks,

Long time no speak - I noticed the pedning the 4.0 release, read an email
the other day regarding the use, or not so much, of the blog for an
announcemtn and more social media. Thought perhaps you would like a short
'release announcement' type video perhaps.

I took the liberty of spinning up a very brief such item, which you can
find here:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IUTY1YzFhR1VLQU0/edit?usp=sharing
[unzip the a4.mp4 video file from the uploaded zip container]

This is just 13 seconds, very low key, I think classy however (course' I'm
bias), I had in mind an audiance of those already using the suite and just
waiting for the release - so useful maybe on FB or G+, but if it suits
anyone please feel free to use it in any fashion you see fit.

Now - one item, I have not been on-line much for many months (only 1 a week
for a few hours on average) and have not kept up with the goings on, so,
was not able to quickly find a vector graphic of what I take if the new
logo, only - I did what I could using the PNG image I found on the wiki,
but I'm sure there is a better image available.

So, if anyone knows where a vector image for that logo can be found I
appreciate it if you could ping back to this mail on the list with the URL.

I would also like to offer, and have started, a second video. Longer, 45 -
90 sec. range, with a quick summary of new features. A little different
audiance from the shorty here, I suppose. To start that I've downloaded all
the information from the release notes page on the wiki, have used this to
generate some raw screen video catpure for the GUI changes and will use,
with your permission If I may, the graphics from the wiki for some of the
file fidelity enhancements.

On this second piece, the problem is likely of what *not* to include, if I
want to hit the length mark above - that certainly would benefit from
collaboration on the list here. Also, because I've not been following along
the list on a reagular basis I'm not sure if anyone is dong somthing like
that already, if so I would offer to help - otherwise, I planned on putting
a first cut together over the weekedn and would make a copy to the list for
merciless review (the best kind of course). If anyone wants to post on the
list to the email with a script though - it wouldn't hurt at all ;)

Thanks for all your had work, it shows in the product.
