Patches are most welcome.

I know this is the conventional thing people say here for this kind of
comment.

It's just so boring: everybody's complaining (It's done by nerds and it
shows) and knows so much better, but nobody takes the time to do anything.

BTW: I totally disagree with that statement. Just because it isn't flashy
as mediaplayers have to be today it isn't nerdy. In fact (and I'm
repeating myself): the web interface was the first thing I ever saw from
SlimDevices (I didn't want to buy a device), and that's what draw my
attention some years ago. It's simple and nifty. Default is still my
favorite though eg. Fishbone offers so much more functionality.

However, in this case, the things that most people don't like about the
web interface will need more than patches.

Ok, from know on I'll ask where can I download your solution? :-)

POINT: Squeezebox needs to become a full portable media player with

[slim] Security of Remote Streaming

2006-09-14 Thread Urmaboyblue

Hello. I am new to this concept of remote streaming my music over the
web and since Slim Server allows this, my question is how safe is this
if I open the port on my PC? Will this leave me open to hackers..etc?
Would most people suggest not doing it for the vunrebility it might
cause to my PC?
Any insight, advice or help would be much appreicated. I primarily
would use the streaming to listen at work.

Potentially, yes. Even more annoying might be the casual visitors who are
changing your playlists, starting songs in the middle of the night etc.

You can do it safely if you're using some kind of tunneling or VPN. Search
the forums for eg. ssh tunneling.

Given how close 6.5 is to release, you might want to consider trying it

6.3 is going to get a lot more attention, whereas if this is a bug that
appears in 6.5 then NOW is the time to raise it!

If it weren't Elgato might also have something to say about it, given
the name of their own EyeTV product.

Is the iTV so very different from the Elgato EyeHome? Seems to do
much the same to me. If so, the only exciting things about it seems
to be that it's being produced by Apple and that it looks neat (or
even neater - EyeHome isn't unpleasing). EyeHome, which enables media
content (including music, photos and TV recorded on the EyeTV) held
on a Mac to be transmitted wirelessly to a television has been out
for several years. Unless there's an agreement between the two
companies going on behind the scenes, Elgato won't be too pleased.

potentially many reasons. AIFF is native, so it shouldn't be due to
any trancoder. but, you should check the server
settings-file types, just to make sure you haven't accidentally
disabled the type. depending on the server version (which you haven't
supplied)
you may need to check the setting for file types to ignore while
scanning (though since you are able to try to play them, it's very
likely not the problem.

Also go to server settings-debugging, check d_source then open up
http://serverip:9000/log.txt. When you try to play the track, that
window will show you
the steps that the server is taking in order to play the track. it may
show errors there. Last step, run command line in case there are any
system errors involved that are too low level to make it into a server
log.

the gallery view replaces browse artwork.

The advantage is that now any album listing can be shown as a list of
album titles,
or a grid of album covers. A cookie stores the choice, so it
persistent per-browser, per-server,

and per-skin.

it also means that they both use the same code, so no more mistakes
keeping the two album lists in sync.

[slim] Gapless mp3 playback when is it going to be fixed??

2006-09-14 Thread cparker

Hi,

The bug/request to playback gapless MP3s which have been encoded with
Lame has been open more than 18 months now.

Anybody have any clue when its going to be fixed, its set into the
distant future at the moment even beyond release version 7???

Even Apple/iTunes have fixed this now but Slim seem more interested in
churning out new products instead of making the basics of the software
work!! How funny that would be, buying a Transporter for thousands of
dollars and it still wouldnt play your mp3 gapless, though I assume you
wouldnt play lossy on it ;)

Please vote for it and see if we can get it pushed up the priority list
the gaps are driving me crazy!

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1026

Yes I know Vog Orbis already does gapless.. and yeah I guess I will get
flamed, but I'm not asking for miracles!

Thanks

If this were so easy every player (software and hardware) in the world
would support mp3 gapless - but only a handful do and only very few can
actually do it right. Mp3 just isn't made for gapless playback, any
attempt to solve the problem will always be a workaround.
And workarounds for flaws in certain encoding formats is certainly not
the basics of the software!
If the gaps are driving you crazy why don't you switch to a format that
does support gapless? There are alternatives to mp3 as you said
yourself.

[slim] Re: Gapless mp3 playback when is it going to be fixed??

2006-09-14 Thread cparker

From the lay person it doesnt seem so hard, LAME encoded MP3s have the
detail of the padding required.

Many players dont, because companies cant be bothered to update their
firmware to support it and want you to buy the latest and greatest,
hence these guys;

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/FeatureComparison

So I do consider it the basics when its encoded in the file. If it
meant that you had to write a bit more code to read the genre tag would
you leave that out??

I'm not part of the crowd that thinks flashy = good.

In fact, I think flashy often = bad (for example, flash itself can be
misused to be very bad, as I pointed out in another thread).

(and I too like default - despite the extra functionality of fishbone,
I find the colours not relaxing, almost jarring).

But *my* problems with the web interface are not layout issues, not
skinable issues, but responsiveness issues. I wouldn't particularly
want to change the look of Default, or perhaps only a bit - one or two
things from Fishbone are quite nice, modulo the colour scheme.

But the fact that every interaction takes 5 seconds puts it in the same
class as the Audiotron - which was slower than the second coming. And
that takes more than a few cosmetic skin patches to change.

I gather 6.5 is better - I haven't had a chance to download it yet. So
maybe I'd better wait and see. Maybe this weekend if time permits.

[slim] Re: Security of Remote Streaming

2006-09-14 Thread chris . mason

I second Michael's suggestion regarding SSH, although hamachi is
interesting so I will take a look at that.

My suggestion would be to go the SSH route, although that does have
some overhead for encrypting/decrypting the stream. It is easy to set
up though. If you are running Linux make sure you have OpenSSH
installed, if you are on Windows installed Cygwin with the OpenSSH
package (http://www.cygwin.com), then you just need to open port 22
inbound to your SSH server (probably the same as your slimserver
machine).

With that up and running, you have a couple of choices for streaming
your music remoteley:

1. Use SoftSqueeze, which has an SSH client built in, and supports
SOCKS proxying,
2. Open an SSH tunnel yourself using an SSH client on port 9000, and
stream your music as MP3, and listen to it using winamp, xmms,
whatever.

Hope that helps!
Chris.

 your music remoteley:

 Chris.

I used OpenSSH for a year or so but had a lot of connection problems.
Had to restart Softsqueeze several times per day.

With Hamachi I can leave it on Random all day.

Take a look here for encryption and security.

No, I have nothing to do with Hamachi. ;)

[slim] Re: Wanted: New Hardware - Squeezebox Portable

2006-09-14 Thread Mark Lanctot

I don't agree with the internal storage part. People knock SlimServer,
but it's really the reason why the Squeezebox is so flexible and
powerful. I'd be disappointed in something whose feature set is fixed
from day 1 and that can't be customized. Plus in terms of storage, why
not use the huge capacities offered by hard drives? Why not use the
vast untapped computing power of most PCs?

And finally, I don't want to maintain yet another music library for a
Squeezebox portable! All that transferring music back and forth and
regularly refreshing the internal storage card as I get sick of what's
on it will get old really fast.

What would be neat is if the internal storage could be synched to
SlimServer over wireless. Perhaps a designated low bitrate subset of
your SlimServer library could be transferred over.

I don't see why mini USB instead of Ethernet either. In fact, maybe no
wired networking at all would make more sense.

It would be a shame to lose the VFD - even the Roku SoundBridge Radio
uses one. However if it was to be battery powered there may be no
choice.

Personally I'm looking for more of a Squeezebox boombox with its own
speakers but not 100% portable. It could be that there are two
potential products here - a Squeezebox boombox and a Squeezebox
portable. There are different needs here - internal storage would be
absolutely essential in a portable device while it would not be
desirable in a boombox still within wireless range. A boombox could
likely be plugged in so a VFD could be used while a portable might
benefit more from an LCD.

[slim] Re: Can my PC and SB3 access my networked music library remotely?

2006-09-14 Thread jz1

Ross,

Thanks for your reply. The shuttle looks enticing (the absolute
divinity of elegance as shuttle's website says) and I may go this
route ultimately, especially considering that I probably will find more
uses for a dedicated server on my home LAN (LAN #1) once I have one.
For the time being, though, can I infer from your reply that if I take
my laptop (server) with me wherever I go, it is not currently
possible to use my laptop as a SlimServer at another location to stream
or access my music from LAN #1, even if I have a SB at the remote
location (LAN #2)? I've described these two locations as LANs for
simplicity, but really they are both residences and I currently only
have one computer (aside from a WIN95 laptop and a Nokia 770), that I
always have with me, and was hoping to avoid duplicating my music
library at LAN #2 in the interim between now and buying a dedicated LAN
#1 server.

[slim] SB3/Windows Experience/Reseller Plug

2006-09-14 Thread Chip Hart

I was in Rochester, NY, visiting with the in-laws recently,
when my father-in-law asked me if I could set up one of those
black boxes for him. He hasn't ripped a CD in his life, but
the ability to listen to a Farsi radio station on the house
stereo (on a different floor and _wing_ of an ~1820s building)
is the KillerApp.

I wasn't going to get one shipped in time, so I found the folks
at HouseDigital (myhousedigital.com) and drove over [the other
group in Rochester wasn't as helpful]. They were extremely
nice, hung out with me for a while discussing the relative
merits of the slim vs. Sonos, and offered to help with any
post-installation issues.

I returned to home base, downloaded the Windows server for the
first time, and fired it up.

Insert 60 minute distraction here while also fiddling with the
Powerline adaptors for the first time. Got them working after
agreeing not to use the powerstrips.

I was surprised at how 'kind' the Windows installation was and
the SB3 picked up right away. Awesome. It's always nice to
have something work right out of the box. During our attempt to
run things wirelessly, I used the SB3 as a wireless detector as
I walked around while watching the Signal Strength indicator
(20' makes all the difference, as we know).

So, just a 'thanks' to Slim and a plug for the friendly folks at
HouseDigital.

2006-09-14 Thread jz1

I don't think this is solely an MP3 issue because I've had the same
problem with a 500-album library that is entirely WMA-lossless. I
recently upgraded from 6.21 to 6.3x and the dupes reappeared shortly
after I rescanned my entire library. (I'm using XP Pro sp2.) A while
ago, I thought it might be related to having two sets of my library on
the same (network) drive, even though they were in two separate
partitions on the drive, but I now only have one copy on the entire
drive, and still run into the bug. (I still have two partitions on the
drive. Could this be causing it, or is this just a coincidence?)
AndreasG, are your MP3s co-mingled with your ALACs, or somehow distinct
within your overall library?

to no avail.

the gallery view replaces browse artwork.

The advantage is that now any album listing can be shown as a list of

Interesting.

should turn the volume on the SB up to 40 but when I do that I get
distortion in the music. It sounds like clipping but I use replygain in

to effect certain frequencies more than others. Ozzy's voice for
example. The gains on my amp where set using the CD player and when I
turn down the SB volume I get noise in the system. So I'm just curious
what the proper settings would be when using a SB to preamp to Amp

Since this thread is largely derailed from discussions of Fruity Tech
companies, a further question on gallery view.

Anyone know why you can't use gallery view when browsing by artist?
Well, you can once you drill down to the individual artist, but not
when you are viewing, say, artists that start with R.

I've added the new gallery view stuff to Nokia770, and I mostly love
it, but it bothers me that it's not available for Browse-Artist. If I
want to select an album by cover artwork, artist is the logical
top-level grouping I'd want to do my browsing. Seeing R.E.M.'s Life's
Rich Pageant next to the soundtrack to Life Aquatic doesn't make
much sense to me...

This might be better asked in the dev forum, but I'll start here...

[slim] Re: Wanted: New Hardware - Squeezebox Portable

2006-09-14 Thread autopilot

d_anders, you are right in that a portable squeezebox/boombox/squeezebox
radio is a great idea, and something that many of us are crying out for.
Slimdevices are tied up with the Transporter, but i think its the next
logical (and good business) step.

But you are s wrong about the internal storage issue. Thats not
what Slimdevices are about and not what people who buy squeezebox's
want. At the end of the day, if i wanted a portable device with onboard
storage i would by an iPod. You are missing the whole point.

I dont want multiple compies of my music all of the place, i want a
single central server with all my music in high quality lossless form.
It's nicer to manage, allows for 'zoneing' you house and syncing
players and it's potentially a much cheaper model. I think this is the
way forward (along with online storage/subscription services). I would
also be interested in seeing how battery life compares between running
a HDD and just wifi. A non-HDD device would also be far more robust.

But a portable squeezebox is badly wanted, just look how well the
soundbridge radio thing has gone down.

Just in case they are planning one, how about some sugestions for a
name? I will start the ball rolling;

'Squeezio' (squeeze/radio, geddit?)
'Squeezebox Radio' (too boring?)
'Squeezebox Lite'

Of course if any of these names are used, i wont charge too much :)

1) Ok, inline storage

I could give up on it, but I think some additional internal memory
would allow the unit to buffer a stream for period of time, so that any
intermittment drops in network performance could be handled better.

2) Those of you asking, why not just get a RIO, sandisk, etc?? I guess
my request on inline storage confused matters.

3) Why not a softsqueeze link via a laptop?laptops are too big...I
want a truly portable, put in my pocket, squeezebox that I will listen
to with earphones, or super easy to plug into boom boxes, etc

Microsoft's ZUNE devices are going to have this. And they will be able
to link to media centers and other services via the devices. They will
be able to do both inline storage and connect to outside services.

I want Slim Devices to come out with a portable unit to do the same,
which should be able to wirelessly connect to slimdevices servers,
squeezenetwork, and hopefully online music lockers.

[slim] Re: Strange Noise

2006-09-14 Thread GregF

Nope. Updated to beta 3 and it's still doing it. In fact, closer
investigation reveals even more randomness. Sometimes the sound does
disappear when the SB is shut off from the remote and sometimes it
doesn't. I've tried shutting it off with a song playing, with a song
paused and with the playlist cleared. In all 3 cases, somtimes the
sound comes back and sometimes it doesn't. The only constant has been
that the sound is never there when the SB has been turned on from the
remote.

More data points: With the SB off and the sound there, unplugging the
SB power makes the sound stop (not surprisingly). Plugging it back in,
the sound returns even before it reconnects to the SlimServer.

On a hunch, I tried making changes to the Power On Resume setting of
the player, to no effect. I'm currently using Stop at power off/Remain
stopped at power on

Curiouser and curiouser.

[slim] Using FLAC files

2006-09-14 Thread Jig

Hi all, running a couple of SB1's on a RedHat 8 server and Slimserver
6.3.1 .. been using mp3's for years and it's fine, but I thought I'd
give FLAC a go.

So I ripped a CD using EAC and FLAC, replaced the mp3 files in my music
directory with the new flac files (tested with FLAC frontend), but when
I rescanned the server, the files disappeared from the browse list. So,
currently, I have a directory full of .flac files that Slimserver does
not see. I've double checked the permissions and they're ok (555).

Is there anything I can do to check the files and/or work out why
Slimserver doesn't like them?

Taking on the iPod would be corporate suicide.

Microsoft can do it - they can afford to throw $100 million at the
market and then say oh well at the end of the day when it just
doesn't catch on. They're not the type to just say oh well and call
it quits though, they have the money to be able to enter the market by
brute force.

Though I don't know the particulars of Slim Devices' financial
situation, I can safely say they don't have the financial clout of
Microsoft. ;-)

Everyone who wants an iPod already has one. The holdouts either just
hate Apple and everything they do or they just don't want a portable
player, period. Slim would only be able to go after the Apple haters.
That's a niche within a niche.

[slim] Re: Gapless mp3 playback when is it going to be fixed??

2006-09-14 Thread radish

Doing gapless with mp3 used to be hard, but with LAME encoded stuff it's
now pretty easy - just read the tag. Other formats are gapless, so the
infrastructure to do seamless transitions is there, all that needs
adding is the code to the firmware's mp3 decoder.

I'm aware it's an issue of priorities, and I'm aware that as a
non-contributor myself my voice is weaker, but I consider this a
significant issue.

People coming over from other platforms frequently have large existing
libraries in mp3, and certain genres of music really require accurate
gapless playback (while others, of course, make no use of it). Being
able to answer yes, the SB3 will playback your files as intended
rather than sure, just transcode to flac/rerip from cd/whatever
strikes me as a big selling point.

As for the issue of whether people who care about gapless would still
use mp3 - you betcha. For me it's not about getting total fidelity,
it's about not having one of the most important part of the album (the
track transitions) destroyed. If you listen to mixed music, as many
people do, having a gap in there is like having someone hit you with a
frying pan every 5 minutes.

Case in point, for the last 2.5 years I've used an increasingly
scratched up and flaky Rio Karma as my portable device for the sole
reason that plays Vorbis gapless. Yesterday I bought an iPod because
Apple finally realised gapless matters. I would never have bought my
first SB if it didn't do gapless from at least Vorbis FLAC - and if I
had a large mp3 library at the time (I didn't) I'd have wanted that to
be gapless too.

I think comparing the Squeezeboombox idea (which has been discussed
dozens of times on this forum) to an iPod is apples-to-oranges.

My dream goes something like this:

wireless SB3 hardware
T-Ampish kind of thing to drive the speakers
Speakers of reasonable but affordable quality
One electrical cord to power it
Ability to run on batteries (9 Ds, I don't care, just cut the cord)
A case for it all

there'd be a headphone jack, but that's not it's primary purpose. I
want it to look like a thumpin' boombox, not a wee tiny ipod.

Personally, I think inline storage would be a major misdirection, but

The fact that a device such as this would be largely useless outside of

 Ben

Gaps between sequential tracks sound just as bad on a $10 pair of
speakers on 64KHz MP3s as they would on an audiophile system with
FLACs. The demographic that gets annoyed by gaps is much larger than
the demographic that gets annoyed by a 16KHz lowpass filter.

I don't think it's fair to assume that those who prefer gapless
playback would always use FLACs. While I opted for Vorbis myself, at a
bitrate I considered to be transparent, I can see why someone would
choose LAME MP3, and even choose a bitrate that was not always
transparent. Regardless of the encoding choice, gaps are obvious to
untrained listeners on even the lousiest equipment, and some of those
folks are going to be annoyed.

Transcoding at the server is a great workaround for gapless playback,
and I'm very grateful we have it. But true client-side gapless MP3
playback support would be a very good feature--and not just a feature
only a few rare cases would take advantage of.

2006-09-14 Thread Patrick Dixon

My guess is that it's your Creek DAC's clock freewheeling. With 6.5
firmware the SB3 doesn't put out an SPDIF signal until it powers on,
and it turns it off again when it's switched off. IIRC this was a
feature request so that DACs with multiple digital inputs can correctly
autosense.

Presumably once the Creek has locked on to something after it's first
powered up, it's then OK - so the solution is just not to turn it off!

I think I want something like this too. I could build it now with an
SB3, T-Amp, and speakers (and ideally, a salvaged vintage boombox), but
can't figure out how to do it for less than $400-$500. What would be
the price point for such a box? I guess you could get the price down
by ditching the VFD display (probably would want to for battery life
too), and perhaps using some cheaper components (but Slim has a rep to
uphold).

It also would work anywhere you can get a Wi-Fi signal if you have
access to your SlimServer (perhaps a firmware mod to support SSH
tunneling will be necessary?)

2006-09-14 Thread bklaas

Boy, I like where you are going with that idea, esp. the built-in
tunnelling option via firmware.

Do you know how to deal with the AC-DC thing? Forgive me, I'm an
electrical idiot, but isn't providing power with batteries vs. AC a
non-trivial issue? Has this been componentized (that a word?) to the
point where you can just buy the necessary hardware to be able to
switch between the two power sources seamlessly?

I know there's some upstart companies that are now doing fully custom
fabrication of cases and the like, so I think it would be possible for
someone that wanted to hack a solution together to do it in a
reasonably polished manner.

Making something like this is WAY out of my league, but fun to bounce
around ideas once in a while.

Yes, this is trivial. Such units are designed internally to run on DC.
You merely have to provide an adapter that converts 120 VAC to the
required DC voltage.

That's why wall-wart adapters for battery-powered devices usually come
in 1.5 V steps for output voltage.

On the other hand, if gapless were important to me I wouldn't hesitate to migrate to a format that supported it more uniformly, rather than waiting for the feature to be added to my player.
You're not going to get SlimDevices to commit to this, or any other unannounced feature improvement, so you just can't know how long it might take. Life is too short to sit on the sidelines and complain.By the way, thank you for correctly identifying this as a feature and not a bug.

Yes. YES!

One final thing I'd like to add to this wishlist is some buttons. It
doesn't necessarily need the full suite of buttons from the remote
(perhaps you could drop the number keys, if buttons onboard raise the
cost), but at least some of the buttons to allow control without the
remote. This would fit the boom-box market well, and also allow this

it runs on 5V DC already. It's the current draw that makes it
impractical for batteries. You could mod up a series stack of 3 or 4
D cells (depends on if it will run at 4.5 and/or accept as high as 6V
in) and see how long it lasts. I expect the power hungry VFD would
have to go.

lrossouw,
I don't think I can run Slim on Win95. (I tried, unsuccessfully,
though maybe not correctly.) I'd thought about installing XP but I
don't think my P90 laptop can handle it (not to mention the 700MB
HDD). I hadn't thought about a non-WIN OS since I don't know anything
about them, but I'm game for that if it will work since I no longer use
the P90 laptop. I don't want to mis-direct my own thread (unless the
answer to my original question is no), so I'll search the forums over
the next few days for info on this. Thanks for suggesting another
alternative.

As blkwrx said, 5 V DC. Note you couldn't do this with standard A-C-D
batteries, the closest you could come is 4.5 V.

BTW the device is not entirely DC, I believe the VFD requires AC so
there's an inverter.

The power supply is 2 A. At first I was going to say that's a fairly
heavy demand for a battery but look here:

http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/WilliamCruz.shtml

A single D cell has a capacity of 15 A*h. That means it could power a
Squeezebox for 7 hours, and a Squeezebox doesn't draw a full 2 A. Not
bad!

Also highly theoretical. Battery life isn't linear. Draw a
consistently higher current you may find that it lasts less than the
stated Ah. There can sometimes be sweet-spots, plus the voltage drops
over time. This can mean the device drops off before the battery is
used up, or the device draws more than the usual curent and runs the
battery down even faster.

Then they'd need two IR receivers -- one in the recessed slot, and a
second out in the open for regular remote usage. If that's workable, and
makes things easier/cheaper to build, it's fine by me.

Well, yeah, I'd love the transporter knob on a squeezeboombox, too, but
I was assuming that the knob was one of the things that differentiated
the transporter. Is the transporter knob clickable? If so, I'd love it
on the squeezeboombox even more, because for the clock-radio

Hmm, good point. It would be nice to keep the VFD but as GoCubs Greg
and wikipedia mentions, a high-intensity OLED might be in order.

The data did originally come from Duracell - I'm sure they wanted to be
as optimistic as scientifically possible. ;-)

Also wireless cards suck a lot of power as well - otherwise my laptop
wouldn't have so many darn settings to keep it at low power or powered
down entirely.
