[slim] Best practices: SqueezeCenter (flac) to iPod
Hello I'm just curious if there is a more comfortable way to get the music from SC to the iPod. I have about 60k flac song's on my SC. So I just want to add some CD's from this collection to my iPod. Currently the way I do is, I log on to the shared drive, where the music resides. Copy all tracks I want to add to my local drive. Use frontAh to convert the music to mp3. Add the music to mp3 and sync it to my ipod. I'm asking myself is there not a nicer way to do this. What I'm imagining is on the webinterface choosing download as mp3-zip or whatever, then just click the file and all flac's from the cd or playlist are transcoded on the server and downloaded as zip-file. so at least the music has only to be added to itunes and especially the complete family can have access to the webinterface for downloading music (don't like to give to many permissions to the shared drive, as the collection is a many-weeks work ;-) thanks for any hint's, ideas, etc klaus -- Klaus Klaus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2751 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49392 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Remote keys not responding properly in 'browse music folder'
If someone helps me I will gladly say thank you and have a drink in your honor. Also, I will toast your longevity. When I browse in my Music Folder the remote keys don't match up properly with letters. If I hit key "4" the display jumps to the first folder beginning with "G". That is as expected. However, if I hit key "6" it jumps to "L" instead of "M". "7" also jumps to "L" instead of "P". Keys 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 all work as expected. Only 6 & 7 do not work. And this is only in Browse Music Folder. In Genre (for example) key "7" jumps to "Pop". As expected. In any browse mode other than Music Folder the keys are assigned as I expect. [slim] No sound through SqueezeCenter...
I just upgraded from Slimserver to SqueezeCenter and also put my music on a NAS. I have an old laptop doing server duties, running the SC software. So far so good - streaming music to my SB3 works just fine. But when I try to play music through SC on my PC (opening the web interface), there's no sound. I also tried VLC and put in the server/stream.mp3 url and it shows, that it's playing something, but again no sound (from mp3 or flac). I didn't have this problem before with my Slimserver setup, so where do I start troubleshooting??? Re: [slim] Thread/Forum Read Marking Type
Mike, this is actually something I had wanted for some time, as someone whose normal method of browsing the forums is to click on "New Posts" but who can sometimes get interrupted in a session and lose the tagging of unread new posts of genuine interest before the next session. However when I did New Posts this morning I got 397 items shown which includes dozens of ones I will never want to read (NAS configuration anyone?) and lots that I can't read (German, French, etc). As it is this is not my ideal solution - a 10 day buffer seems way to much for me. What I would like is the ability to "wipe the slate clean" at any point and mark all posts as read so that next time I can start with genuine new posts and take it from there. Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss
The code for mov123 is online and can be read easily and IIRC there is no processing of audio data except through QuickTime library calls. That said, mov123 seem to use an older supported but not preferred library interface and perhaps that is where the error is creeping in and why existing applications have no problem. The only way to prove/disprove whether Quicktime is the issue would be to install older versions of Quicktime library and see if the problem is in all of them or not. Alternatively save the output from mov123 (i.e. no SC involved) of an audio fragment which demonstrates the hiss and compare the binary file to the mov123 output from a system where no hiss is heard. This is user forum - if you want Logitech to examine this issue - log a bug and describe the bug and how using faad is a workaround and so identifies mov123 as source of problem. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well please excuse my ignorance here but simply pushing this to Quicktime is sort of easy. I doubt it is a quicktime problem. These files play well in quicktime and/or iTunes and in fact any other app here that uses quicktime. Except for SC/mov123. I rather suspect this to be an issue with SC or how SC uses mov123. As I have reported in another thread a couple of times already the default configuration coming with SC still makes use of big endian even though you must not do this on an Intel based platform. No one seems to care about this either. This may or may not be related, but it gives you some sort of clue as to how Slim Devices seems to handle the Mac platform. I personally wouldn't be so arrogant (no offense) to simply push the problem elsewhere. Something is wrong - out of the box for paying customers - and that should be investigated. If the next update is not going to fix this problem and I will have to resort to the "faad hack", I am going to carry that little box back to Logitech so they can keep it. I bought support for AAC on Mac and it's not working. Sorry, I don't mean you. I just hope someone from Logitech is reading this. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

They go buy Squeezeboxes, get > frustrated and return them. No offence, but what exactly do you expect Logitech to be able to do about it ? DHCP was invented to simply networking for the average user. The discovery mechanism that the SBs use (and which only works on a single subnet) was designed to make things easier for the average user. They provide a fallback mechanism (of entering the server's address manually) for those unusual cases where there are more than one subnet. >From my understanding of the DHCP protocol there isn't likely to be a foolproof way of detecting that more than one DHCP server is active. And even if there was the best the SB could was was say "help" and leave the user to sort out the mess. A network with more than one DHCP server fighting over the same address space is broken and I don't see how Logitech can fix that*. * I guess they could make a change to the server discovery mechanism that the SBs and SBC use, but it is hard to see a sensible change to make. It currently uses broadcasts, if you wanted to make it work without fail across subnets and firewalls then I guess you'd have to make SBR, SB, SBC and SC all go out onto the web to a SlimDevices server and register their presence with each other there. Even then it is hard to see how you would make it work, as it would be a nightmare to determine which collection of SBR, SB, SBC and SC came from which network. Even if you got that side it it to work there is no guarantee they would be able to talk to each other on such a network even once they had discovered each other. The only other way would be to dump TCP, DHCP et al and take the propriety route. I think it is pretty clear that would lose them more current users than it would gain them. -- andynormancx Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. Yes, SoftSqueeze as well. What ? I'm moving titles from that one into other playlists. All playlists are then exported to C:/User/Music. At this point I'm working in MC12. Then I go to SqueezeCenter and click Settings/Rescan Playlists. Still, when opening the corresponding playlists in SC, the files which I had just moved, still appear in the SC playlist. I've tried deleting the playlist from C:/User/Music and then exporting it again, but still nothing happens. Any ideas? Or did I succeed in explaining my problem at all? cheers, ole k -- okvaal okvaal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49372 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41597 Question: Does Album Catalogue Creator (RC5+) create a trustworthy output? - Yes - Yes but with minor issues - No - It does not work at all I love this application, but I too have the problem of 'safety settings stop you from accessing a database in another domain' Its all running locally on XP Pro. I have RC4 installed and it runs and produces lovely output. I am on SC7.0.1 and when I try the ACC V1.0 software I get the error - running against 127.0.0.1. I also tried from another machine to see if I could get it to run against the remote IP address, but I get the same error. There isn't much on Google, I've tried setting the permission in IE7 options, but nothing seems to help. Does anyone know what the problem is? Or a reasonable workaround (other than staying with older versions)? Re: [slim] Horrific setup experience - need help
Good info everyone. Fortunately I do understand all you're saying. Putting on my generic user hat, Logitech needs to simplify network handling because most users won't know DHCP from ABC. I'd have no clue that I was running two DHCP servers if I didn't have a bit of networking experience in my day job. I imagine my setup is not unusual. I have a DSL router supplied by Verizon. It provides DHCP by default. You connect your computers to the router and they automatically gain a dynamic IP and connect to the internet, usually behind a default firewall built into the router. Most users will change nothing. I added on a wireless router when I got a wireless laptop. Plug it in and it all works together. Given this scenario, consumers aren't going to know the merits of disabling DHCP on the wireless router. They go buy Squeezeboxes, get frustrated and return them. -- doggieflyer doggieflyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18462 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49358 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

WiFi, bluetooth, zigbee, etc. And I've developed a complete flaming reaction to boxes that setup themselves as 192.168.1.1 and turn on DHCP. I've had different boxes from different vendors do it so often it makes me mad as hell and I'll not going to take it any more. This is also a prime reason I run my subnet on 172.16.4.* so that when I see a 192.168.*.*, I know its some fascist box trying to ruin my day. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

But, and this is key, and where Phil and I actually agree in spirit, I run DHCP on two linux servers (backing each other up, failover, etc.) where I assign fixed IP addresses to every MAC address in my house. and I run a bind/dns, so each IP address gets a nice fixed fully qualified name. What this does is let me manage all the assignment of IP addresses in one place, while allowing the boxes to all use DHCP When I get a new box, I plug it in, and it gets DHCP. Re: [slim] iPod Touch vs Duet Controller
I had both, and both are far from perfect in their use as a controller. I returned the Controller because it's screen is not good outdoors, and is no match for the iPhone/Touch screen. You also get far more for your money, more than just a controller for your $299, with the iPhone/Touch as well. The iPhone/Touch and iPeng has it's issues too. Most of them are due to the shortcomings of Safari, which hopefully gets corrected with the 2.0/3G software release July 11th. It's fully expected that both will have software improvements over time. But the poor screen performance of the Controller was a show stopper for me. -- PRGeno PRGeno's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPod Touch vs Duet Controller
I have both (and a Nokia 770 and an Asus Eee - all get used as Squeezebox controllers occasionally!). If funds are tight and you fancy getting a mobile wifi browser, get an iPod Touch. It gives most of the use of the Controller, and is the best wifi mobile browser out there. Lovely product. However, if you just want a remote control for your music, the Controller is better. The scrolling is better (although the iPeng is good), the keys are useful and it's more intuitive. Put it in the hands of a friend and it takes 10 seconds to explain how it works (mainly the difference between play and add); then they're choosing music and thinking about buying one themselves! Neither works 100%. Wifi has issues, and such things are never going to be bug-free. I still like to have my old IR remote within reach, in case the phone goes and I need to turn it down without having to wait for a wifi handshake! The Controller is better in this respect, but still not perfect. I consider them complementary products - no reason not to get both, IMO :) -- adamslim Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others SB+, EAR V20, Living Voice OBX-R2s plus some other stuff SB3, Charlize, Harbeth HL-P3ES adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter & Windows Home Server
I think that while using a small system drive is appropriate for many server systems, WHS thinks different. The general recommendation for WHS is to use the largest drive as the system drive. This is because WHS partitions off a system drive and then uses the physical drive as a 'landing zone'. Depending on how keen you are to persevere with WHS you should try re-installing WHS on the largest physical drive. I've been using WHS for almost a year and, after some initial teething problems with getting consistent playback from Slimserver, I have been very impressed. >I have a D-Link broadband router to which all the cables are wired...The Squeezebox system gave me many fits without a wireless router so I went and bought a new wireless router< Have you ensured that only one of the routers is a live DHCP server and that the devices aren't otherwise in conflict? NB The Receiver is fine without a wi-fi AP, they establish an ad-hoc link with the controller if necessary. -- amcluesent amcluesent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49358 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Trouble with OSX Server 10.4.x and SqueezeServer 7.0
> Anyway... SqueezeNetwork 7.0.1 and OSX Server 10.4.x is go! Just in case you realise 7.0.1 doesn't scan your full collection: there was an issue in 7.0.1 which caused the scan to fail on _some_ systems (mainly largish collections). In this case you should get 7.0.2. If not: enjoy your music instead of caring about yet another update :-) -- Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
