Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS
OK, I'll chime in. I run a reasonably powerful Win 10 box as my main computer, use it for ripping DVDs and CDs etc, MusicIP analysis and tagging. Then I use FreeFileSync to copy it to a Vortexbox (VB) for streaming by LMS and Plex. Two advantages in this method - backup of all media and low power consumption of the streaming server, plus I have another VB at my Sydney house, so I take the library there on a backup disk and update it for 'off site' backup. So, my advice is to investigate building a small VB for streaming and keep your big box for day to day stuff. Happy to talk further by PM. One of my VBs is in a Silverstone SG05 lite case, uses an Asrock B150M mini itx mobo and a pentium CPU 4GB RAM, 8TB disk. System on a cheap 120GB SSD. A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] Replaygain vs EBU R128
Interesting thread. First I have heard of EBU R128. A quick google brings up the details, so I thought I would compare calculated Replay Gain (RPG) from some music ripped in 2009 with dbPoweramp 13.2 (presumably using Peak algorithm) and RPG re calculated using dbPoweramp 15.3 which uses the new EBU R128. I chose Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Atlanta Symphony. There is quite a difference in the track RPG while only a small difference in the album RPG. As I don't know when dbPoweramp changed to EBU R128 replay gain I have chosen to re-calculate RPG for my whole library, and for DrMatt I use BulkFileChanger to manipulate the file Modified Time to preserve the New Music order. +---+ |Filename: RPG.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24870| +---+ A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] "New Music" - is it possible to edit?
This is an old one. J.J.Jolz explained it all years ago. I use MP3Tag to update tags and have MP3Tag Options / Tags - Preserve file modification time when saving tags - ticked. Then I use BulkFileChanger to add 5 seconds to the File Modification Time, that way a scan picks up the change. Now, to edit the "New Music" order, I open the folder for the out of order album and check the file modification dates, usually the cover.jpg should give you a good clue as to when the music was added, so I just use BulkFileChanger to reset the modification date. I tried playing some audio books to try out the new plugin for audio books that bookmarks where you have read to and restarts where you stopped to play music. The mp3 books were encoded at either 22 or 32 instead of 44.1, so they played fine on my boom but were like chipmunks on the Raspberry pi players. I solved the problem by re-encoding to 44.1 . I reported my problem in the thread. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?102859-New-plugin-for-audio-bookmarks Ralphy replied - ralphy wrote: > Try adding -u E to the squeezelite command line options. I restored the original audio books to my library and added -u E as a command on the pCP Squeezelite Settings tab in the Various input box, saved and restarted then test played the books and they played perfectly on the pCP with an Allo Piano DAC with a PCM5122. However, the ES9023 DACs - MamboBerry LS and a Chinese version of the audiophonics - and the HiFi Berry Digi +, still played like the chipmonks were reading. I will investigate further. Re: [slim] Click at end of ripped track or long silences at end of tracks FIX
As a wearisome Australian, I had the same problem years ago, as far as I remember it was caused by a fault in an early version of MusicIP archiving analysis to tags that resulted in the last piece of a flac file being a few samples short. I found that dbPoweramp could fix the problem by converting the file from flac to flac. I used the opportunity to go to flac(8) and save a bit of disc space. I suspect that using Foobar to convert flac to flac would also be worth trying if you haven't got dbPoweramp. If you saved some tracks with the clicks I would be interested in hearing if a flac to flac conversion eliminates the click. A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] Been away from Squeezeboxes for about 5 years, what have I missed?
What have you missed ? 1. The server software, currently called Logitech Media Server (LMS) has been greatly enhanced, especially in version 7.9 (thanks to M. Herger) 2. Software controllers - wifi apps for iThingy and Android phones and tablets to allow you to control your Squeezebox players. 3. Software players that run on the new System on a Chip devices like RaspberryPi, Wandboard, Cubietruck and Android media players 1. LMS handles large local libraries without slowing down on scans or lookups ( 100K tracks without problems) local art display of scans of booklets and album back covers (.jpg) files in the same folder as cover.jpg allowing viewing from the web gui or phone/tablet controllers a few new plugins and some of the old ones have been constantly enhanced - e.g. Erlands plugins, Server Power Control, Spicefly SugarCube, Music Artist Information lots of streaming software for internet music (I don't use these but am aware of them) much better and quicker text searches - Google like in both speed and usage, again available on the web gui or phone/tablet controllers VortexBox have released excellent software to build a dedicated Fedora LMS system (http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=Howto). 2. Software Controllers - iPeng for iThingys , Orange Squeeze for Android are examples. 3. Squeezelite for Linux based systems (RaspberryPi, Wandboard etc), SB Player for Android, iPeng for iThingys. These allow small boxes (without inbuilt displays) to be configured as a player and controlled via your phone/Tablet. The RaspberryPi especially can be built as a single small box with an internal DAC to feed an amplifier. A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] I want to build a Squeeze player
Jim, I suggest that you start with a Raspberry Pi and HiFiBerry DAC- you end up with a box the size of a cigarette packet that works. The only fly in the ointment is that the latest version was released in August and the software hasn't caught up yet - http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97803-piCoPlayer-Squeezelite-on-Microcore-linux-An-embedded-OS-in-RAM-with-Squeezelitep=789299viewfull=1#post789299. However, I suspect that the developers, Steen and Greg, will have it sorted by the time you get the parts. Do a Google search for Raspberry Pi - from Australia I get http://au.element14.com/jsp/bespoke/bespoke7.jsp?bespokepage=e14/common/promotions/rpi-accessories.jspCMP=KNC-GOO-COM-RPI - you need a case, SD card and power supply. The Edimax EW-7811UN 150Mbps Wireless Nano USB wifi dongle seems to be the popular choice for wifi. The instructions are here - https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home/how-to-1, and for the DAC - http://www.hifiberry.com/news/ A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] 8 TB Storage and more...
As DJanGo asks, SO which way you wanna die and what size of Money you wanna spend? What works for me is a master / slave two server combination. Both systems run Win 7/64 The master is an old Antec P182 case with a quad core Intel chip and a bunch of 2GB drives, 2 for music, one for video and one for TV series. All new music is ripped, tagged, processed by MusicIP etc and stored on the master. New versions of LMS 7.8 are also run there. This system is powered down when not in use. The slave is a mini-ITX system with a low power AMD motherboard and 2 2TB drives. Power draw during a rescan is about 35 watts, normal LMS playing power draw is well below that. This system starts with Wake on Lan and is shut down by the Server Power Control plugin. It lives under the 40 TV and plays Video and DVDs when needed. The music library is kept in sync using Syncback - http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/ . Backup is also done by Syncback and Seagate USB 2TB Desktop Expansion Drives. I suggest that a dedicated server will be better for you than utilising a laptop that is surplus to requirements. You could keep using the laptop as the Master like I do for processing new music and use the dedicated server as the slave. I would replace the 2TB USB drives with Seagate 4TB drives. Now the reading list - This case looks good - http://www.silentpcreview.com/Fractal_Design_Node_304, pick a motherboard from - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/z87-motherboard-roundup,3656.html, disks from - http://www.storagereview.com/wd_black_4tb_desktop_hard_drive_review_wd4003fzex . All the decisions - Single system or Master / Slave, then Operating system, CPU, motherboard (my next one will be a mini-ITX with an onboard mSATA 120GB SSD for drive C), HDD size, HDD speed (and therefore power draw) await you. Happy reading. A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. I consider HomePlug more reliable then wifi but that is a discussion for another thread! I have a small wifi dongle that cost $8. Re: [slim] The 7.6.0 is fine for me thread
7.6.0 beta software worked for me on XP from the early releases on a library of 100k+ flac, mp3 and some m4a. When scanner.exe broke I left my production servers on a working version until scanner.exe was fixed. Scans were significently faster than on 7.4x and I never felt the need to roll back my production servers to 7.4x. Well before the final release the plugins I use (Server Power Control, MIP, Spicefly Sugarcube, Trackstat, Weather Date Time and Inguz Eq) worked, while Lazy Search works in a limited fashion. The Touches, Boomboxes and SB3s all worked. The pedantic scanner means that the gui displays of artists and albums occasionly have duplicates, but I'm gradually correcting the tags - hardly a showstopper. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Wombat, you were spot on, the files in question were highly compressed, I don't think dbPoweramp showed the compression level, but when I used dbPoweramp to 'convert' the files to Flac -8 the resultant file size was larger than the original files. It was some months ago and I cannot recall the particular files. I will go through things tomorrow to see if I can find them. I noticed that you were a contributor to that thread and considered sending a pm to you, but as soon as I had re-encoded the file and it worked I moved on to other things. Re: [slim] How do I stop scanner.exe from running?
Mike, the only thing I would point the bone at is the Rescan Timer that you have already checked is off. I am not aware of anything else that would kick off a scan. You don't have some sort of garbage collect program that would clear SB cache that runs auto magically? If the SB server loses it's data base it will rebuild (kickoff a scan). What type of scan is kicked off? The web control Server Settings/Information tab should indicate whether it is a full scan or just a look for new and changed music, but if it is just a look for new and changed music it shouldn't take long. All I can suggest is to email support or try 7.5.1 (or even 7.6.0) and see if it goes away. Re: [slim] Scans seem slow? web, SBC ui slow? how to make them faster! vote for this bug!
I have lived with a modded my.tt (see my posts earlier in this thread) with set innodb_buffer_pool_size set to 500m for two weeks, monitoring the memory usage via Windows Task Manager. Unless I have performed a Clear Rescan, mysqld.exe does not use more than about 125M. Lazy searches are extra fast, with the number of matches almost instant as I enter each character. The GUI is fast and as I said earlier a pleasure to use (this is with a library of 97,759 tracks, 8,473 albums, most with cover.jpg - mostly FLAC, but some mp3 and m4a). Browsing by albums - Home Albums - takes a few seconds going from one letter to another, but is still acceptable. Clicking on the artwork instantly brings up the album details. Browsing by artists - Home Artists - also takes a a couple of seconds between letters, but again clicking on an artist brings up an instant display of the albums. Search Music - Home Search -is nearly instant in displaying search results. This mod is certainly worthwhile in Windows and Squeezecenter 7.3.4 -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. I also monitored disk i/o using Windows Process Monitor; with the standard my.tt mysqld.exe dominated the disk i/o, with the modified my.tt scanner.exe was the major disk i/o until 60,000 tracks then mysqld.exe occasionally did some disk i/o but only 3 or 4 Mb in a burst. The web UI is now a pleasure to use. I had stopped using it since I bought iPeng as the ui was so slow and even caused re-buffering in the music, but it is now very fast for searches and to display album art. It has now been running for an hour, I have done some music searches, browse albums and artists an the mysqld.exe is using only 146,808K, less than the 170,304K that SQUEEZ~1.EXE is using. Conclusion - if you have plenty of RAM in your server, give the innodb_buffer_pool_size as much ram as you can, up to the size of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\Cache\MySQL. mysqld.exe will use all it can on a clear and rescan but after a scan will only use what it needs. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. I submitted it a week ago, let's see when it will show up Pippin, does 1.2 need the new iPod Touch 3.1 operating system ? -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] How to make the Squeezebox 'forget' an old Server
Kyruss;434738 Wrote: Hello, I have one hopefully easy question. Can one of You may tell me how I get rid of an old server in my Squeezebox Config. I got my self an new HomeServer with Squeezeserver running on it. All my SB still 'know' the old one. I can't figure out, how to get rid of it. If the Server is down, they always try to connect to the old one. I am using SB Duet and Boom. Regards MAtthias For the SB3, simply hold the left arrow on the remote for 5 seconds and the Connect to: menu comes up and with the up arrow and down arrow you can select SqueezeNetwork, server 1, Server 2 etc. The Boom and Duet will be similar. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] Looking for help with a noise problem
So SB3 (Digital out)- DAC - PreAmp - Amp = no buzzing noise, but SB3 (Analog out)- PreAmp - Amp = Buzzing noise, and SB3 (Analog out)- Amp = no buzzing noise, Correct ? Re: [slim] Looking for help with a noise problem
I still think it is some kind of earthing problem. Have you tried different interconnect cables ? Also have you tried plugging the SB3 into a different input ? For example, take the cables out of your CD player and plug them into the SB3 and see if that makes a difference. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] Looking for help with a noise problem
By the look of the preamp (http://www.anthemav.com/OldSitev1/pdf/pre1l.pdf) it is well shielded - looks like a steel chassis weighing 20 pounds. However, from the picture it appears that the RCA input plugs are mounted on a circuit board and the ground hookup may be loose or a dry joint. The preamp must be at least 10 years old From this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60122 it appears that the SB3 expects to be grounded through the interconnect shield and if that was not grounded at the preamp then it could make the noise you describe - like the noise you got when you plugged in a magnetic P/U cartridge in a turntable and didn't have the RCA plug to your preamp plugged in all the way. Can you get hold of a multimeter to check if the outside of the RCA input sockets on the preamp are grounded ? Or better still, take the SB3 and preamp to the amp builder and show him the problem. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee.
