Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
I have a full LMS ecosystem - actually more then one - with SB Touch, SB3, Boom, Radio, Jogglers, Libratone Zipp (AirPlay bridge) and about half a dozen Pis but we do also have a couple of Echo Dots. The dots are used to keep a shopping list running and to switch on/off lights - one is linked to some ceiling mounted speakers in my family bathroom which my wife uses to play a bit of Radio but the sound is not up to my standards. I use the en-suite which has (much better quality) wired speakers on zone 2 from my bedroom AVR with an SB Touch. Ive tried the LMS Mediaskill but its not quite there and I prefer controlling from a phone but for basic stuff I suppose the Dots are worth it as a start point. Squeezebox/LMS is *not* for non-techies, I know, I tried to set up a system for my sister (I even bought her a Squeezebox Touch), no go, she and her partner couldn't get their heads round it. A few years ago I briefly experimented with Max2Play and concluded that it was trying to cover too many bases and as a result required a fair bit of configuration effort. So for the time being I stuck with Vortexbox running on an old Acer Revo. When I tried piCorePlayer on a RPi3 a couple of years back it was a breeze to set up and the Vortexbox got retired. PCP seems specifically aimed at the Squeezebox ecosystem and does it very well. Having been out of the audio marketplace for many years, they asked for some advice on acquiring a new system, when they're ready to make that investment. By now, they've probably realized that asking me for advice was a foolish mistake. Right now, my focus is on getting them some very minimal gear so they can get experience with online music. I don't think I ever encountered an LP intended for consumer use that had lock grooves. There were good reasons for them in broadcast settings, especially before the days of tape cartridges. Which is also well before my time, but I've seen some of the old transcription discs of national commercials or Public Service Announcements. It would have been a great relief to know that it wouldn't keep going to the next track, if the operator was slow taking it off the air. I believe that when 45rpm records were launched after WW2, they were marketed as an album, to be played as a stack on an autochanger record player. That ended up less popular than 33rpm LPs, and 45s ended up playing a different but important role in popular music. Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
I think the term "album" has been used figuratively ever since we moved beyond the (literal) multipocket album of 78 rpm records, like the one depicted here: 'Toscanini recording of Haydn Symphony on Discogs' (https://www.discogs.com/Haydn-Philharmonic-Symphony-Orchestra-New-York-Arturo-Toscanini-Symphonie-D-Dur-The-Clock-Symphony/release/12299761) How else could you package a recording of something that was too long to fit on an individual or "single" record? With an LP, all that could go on just one disc. To put it in more contemporary terms, an LP was a VIRTUAL album. There's no reason a cassette or 8-track tape cartridge couldn't be considered an album, too, but by the late sixties we were accustomed to equating "album" with "LP". I wonder if that was true when people (a few people, anyway) were buying albums on reel-to-reel tape. EPs never caught on in the US, but I had a few in my collection. We couldn't understand why some of the Beatles' recordings, like Magical Mystery Tour, were released first on EP. Thanks for all suggestions. The sense I'm getting so far is that an LMS system should work for them in the long run. But we aren't there yet. They really have no hardware for playing music at present, and right now the budget doesn't allow for even a basic Sonos system. I'll probably lend them a spare bluetooth speaker and an old phone so they can get started and experiment with streaming services. (They do not want music playing at home to be tied to the phones they use.) My hope is that by the time they have dealt with the home maintenance issues that are currently straining the budget, they will have some experience with contemporary ways of listening to music. Then they should be in a much better position to decide what they want to invest in. Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
In the original post an interim measure of a bluetooth speaker was suggested. If budget allows I'd upgrade that to a Bluetooth / AirPlay speaker - something like a Libratone Zipp - as it could then be used with Phillipe's AirPlay Bridge plugin in a future LMS. Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
I'm unclear on whether your friends already have a stereo or powered speakers to use with LMS. If so, setting up a Raspberry Pi server/player and controlling via mobile device is the way to go. If not, I'd take a closer look at Sonos. A pair of Sonos One can be configured for stereo or set up in different rooms as needed. Same mobile control and no server necessary. If your friends subscribe to Amazon Prime, Sonos will play the included Amazon Music service. This from an absolute LMS fanboy. It seems the major options would be LMS, Roon, or Sonos. Roon is not free, and if they struggle with LMS technology, they would with Roon as well. Sonos is supposedly simpler to deal with (although can still have network issues, etc.), but way less flexible, and tied to only SONOS players. I'd say a simple LMS setup, with rPi PiCorePlayer, local music on attached USB drive, a smart device controller on phone/pad (ipeng for iOS or use the MATERIAL interface), and a streaming service like Spotify or Tidal would be the simplest option. The "hardest" part of the LMS setup is the initial setup (and you'll be helping with that). Just using the setup should be essentially transparent to the users. My wife just "locates" what she wants to play (internet radio, podcast, local music, spotify) using a controller, selects it, and it plays. She's been using the system for over 10 years and has no clue how it works, etc. And it simply just works, year in and year out. I *think* (not sure) that if one has LMS running but has the setting to transfer the LMS cache, etc. to the attached USB drive rather than having it on the SD card, the odds of corruption are less. But in my brother's case, I had him get a UPS to plug his rPi and router/modem into (so a power blip wouldn't cause the rPi to lose power). And I left him with a 2nd SD card already setup, so if the worst happens, I can walk him through removing the old SD card and replacing the SD card and then rebooting. *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.3>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4) -or- rPi4B/pCP6.0/4TB>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.3>Squeezelite *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112330 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
Thanks for all responses so far. Paul, what you are describing is very close to what I have in mind, but my friends don't yet have enough experience with current music technology to know what their preferences are. They are certain they don't want always-listening smart speakers. Other than that, I'm trying to get them to play around with streaming services, so they can find out what they like and whether they need to have a local library. bpa, thanks for your clarification about when updates are needed. That's something I'll need to keep in mind for my friends. Gary, I notice your brother's instructions are to pull the plug if there's a problem with pcp. I understand that can cause problems when LMS is running on pcp. Do you do anything to deal with issues that might arise? Is it enough to be sure there's a backup SD card ready to swap out, in case the one in use becomes corrupted? Running piCoreplayer 4.0 (not the current 6.0) and whatever LMS I originally setup. It's on 24/7 sitting next to their router. They haven't touched it in over a year. All they know is that if something ever quits working, just unplug and plugin the rPi itself, wait 3 minutes, and it should all be back. They haven't even had to do that. (I was just worried about power outage type events that might require that). I've had older vortexbox servers running where LMS and the VB OS has been up and running for over 8 months without even a reboot. *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5)>LMS 7.9.2>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4)>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.2>Squeezelite *The Wild (no internet): *PiCorePlayer 4.0 on rPi 3B+, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) laptop *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112330 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
Do they have music / audio files stored locally on networked computer(s)? Is their main intention to listen to internet radio? Do they want to pay for an internet music service without adverts? (If yes - any preferences for which one?) Are they OK to control things using mobile phone/tablet/computer screen - or do they expect to navigate menus on the devices themselves? Does their HiFi have a spare Aux In socket? Easy way forward ... Raspberry Pi (without without a case) hiding behind the HiFi and plugged in via the Pi 3.5mm socket (not the best quality but a lot better than it was when they first launched). Ideally Ethernet from that to their broadband router - but WiFi will work. Best to have Ethernet to LMS if there will be multiple zones connecting to it. Use that first to get familiar with it ... and if OK then other RPi (even RPi Zero W) for other zones - but will need active (powered) speakers or HiFi or an add-on amplifier board on the RPi to drive passive speakers (or get a SqueezeAMP from Philippe as it has a built-in amp). Alternative route if not playing local music ... get Amazon Alexa devices (if they do not care about a listening device being in the room) ... they can be sync'd and can be plugged into HiFi for better sound.
