Re: [Elecraft] OT - Why so much Off topic??
For your information, G3NKC who started this thread, has now unsubscribed from the reflector. If only people would use these properly in their subject lines the filtering would do the job. Unfortunately they don't. We have for instance KX3, KX-3, KX 3 - and I see today we even have CK722 and CK-722. It becomes harder and harder to set up a regular expression to cope with all the variants, and very few see to put brackets [] round it. I appreciate this has been discussed countless times before and Eric is not going to split the list, but quite honestly the amount of traffic on this list is totally out of all proportion for those of us who are busy enough in other email areas. I use the Gmail client for email. Even with a pile of 70 or 80 messages, I can use the J and X hot keys to go down the list and mark entire threads for deletion in less than 60 seconds. It's limited by how fast I can read the titles. I click on the delete button and all that remains is stuff I am interested in reading. The Gmail client also gathers the messages by thread in the main display, and removes prior matter from the message BEFORE it is sent to my screen. Older material can be clicked on and retrieved. In short, it answers many of the reflector complaint issues. Personally I oppose splitting the list, because it would make cleaning up for reading a lot slower. When I use nabble, I turn OFF the option that splits the messages by category. Otherwise the most recent messages are scattered all over the place. 73, Guy. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Current Draw vs. Options
John, The typical receive current for a K2/10 is 240 to 300 ma. depending on the option set. If the KDSP2 is added, it will be higher by about 50 ma. A fully loaded K2 I am currently working on draws 300 ma. with all options connected (with KAF2 not the KDSP2). Removing the KAT2 and the KIO2 plug drops the current to 280 ma. Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charger Voltage High?
Wes, Oh, I do understand the UC3906 charge controller. Its bulk charge is a constant current source, which means the voltage is not controlled (except by the battery). Once the voltage reaches the V12 point, it goes into an overvoltage charge until the current drops to a defined rate, then it goes to the float voltage. The various voltages and current states are determined by the choice of resistors. If the battery has high resistance and does not want to take a charge willingly, the charger will start out with the bulk charge and almost immediately switch to the overcharge voltage, and may never go to the float charge state. So 16 volts is not an improbable situation, it all depends on the battery condition and the resistors chosen by the designer of the charger. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/27/2011 5:03 AM, Wes Stewart wrote: It's not unusual to do equalization charges on wet batteries at over 15V. [Elecraft] [KX3] Screwdriver Antenna Tuning ??
The KX3 surely looks like a nice mobile rig that may replace my IC-706 But, I would need a good screwdriver antenna tuning interface. Currently, I use the Turbo-Tuner by N2VZ which is fitted to the IC-706 tune control. I have a Hi-Q 4/80 antenna mounted on my pickup truck. So, several questions: 1. Would there be a tune control interface on the KX3? 2. Would Elecraft consider building a screwdriver antenna interface? Just to be clear on what I mean by screwdriver antenna interface --- a device that uses the transmitter's tune control circuit to switch on a low power signal and measure the SWR (usually via reflected voltage) and switch on the screwdriver antenna drive motor adjusting the center loading coil tap until a minimum SWR (under 1.5:1) is reached where it turns off the drive motor and turns off the transmitter's low power signal. I guess if Elecraft did not come out with a screwdriver antenna interface that some talented electronics guru on this forum might do so. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Sounds like you may have problem with your power supply. Monitor power supply voltage while you key the rig, see if it stays correct. If it does, check the power cable and see if the APP connectors are fully engaged and not just partially inserted. Try to key it with reduced power output level and see if it still shuts down. Just for sanity check, if possible, try different power supply and/or power cable. Re: [Elecraft] K3 shutdown
I would look first for a low voltage under load situation. Maybe a power connector has worked loose. The VFO frequency is normally saved during the controlled shutdown process initiated by pressing the K3 front panel power button. Pulling the plug doesn't give the firmware a chance to save the VFO frequency in non-volatile storage. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of John/K8AZT Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 8:25 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 shutdown My K3 sn1693 has just started exhibiting a troubling problem. To All Contesters and Casual Operators: The inaugural running of the Maritime Contest Club (MCC) QSO Party is slated for 4 and 5 June (next weekend). Rules are shown here http://www.maritimecontestclub.com/maritimeqsoparty.html and the contest is also listed here http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestcal.html. Users of current N1MM software to note: you will find the new MCC contest listed in the QSO Party Window. Other logging programs also support this one. We are expecting our first try to work well, mostly because we freely cribbed our rules from such notable QSO Parties as FL QP and CA QP (and others), but we need everyone who can find a minute to make a few Qs with us so that we can unearth any shortcomings during this Beta test and to make our efforts worthwhile. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Audio output
The KX3 is *very* compact, and so is its speaker. It is adequate for use in a reasonably quiet environment. In a noisy vehicle, it is definitely not going to provide enough audio. Also, with mono audio you'd miss out on one of the KX3's binaural audio features (dual watch, simulated stereo, pitch mapping, etc.). These effects completely transform the operating experience; it's the same reason we provided full stereo audio in the K3. Given the above, I strongly recommend using your car's stereo audio system for AF output. Many vehicles have an AF aux input jack. For those that don't, there are FM modulators such as the RadioPlay 300 (from Monster Mobile) or aftermarket devices that allow you to tap into the CD-radio interface. You could also use external amplified speakers. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 27, 2011, at 11:26 AM, George Winship, NC5G wrote: I'm planning on replacing my IC-730 that has been my mobile rig for 20+ years with the KX3 and wonder what the receive audio output is. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Dimensions
The dimensions are for the enclosure, less projections. Same control knobs as the ones used for the K3 function encoders. The VFO knob is brand new and lower profile than the K3's. In fact it might work as a K3 VFO B knob :) It has a rubber band and is styled the same as the K3's VFO A knob. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 27, 2011, at 11:34 AM, David Yarnes wrote: Wayne-- Is the KX3 depth dimension (1.7 inches) just the case, or does it include the control knobs? If it's just the case, can you give us that dimension including the dials/knobs? Actually, the freq. dial looks just like the one on the K3, so I can probably figure it out myself, but just an approximate confirmation would be helpful. That would make it right at 1 inch deeper. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power calibration failure
My two-year old K3/100 developed an intermittent power problem. At first I had the PA in and out a couple of times thinking it was the reported connector pin problem. No luck. I noted that pushing on the KANT3 board that is used with no ATU would fix the problem for a time. Fix meaning it would pass TXG on all bands. To make a long story shorter, I finally called Elecraft support. I was asked to read back the TXGN values and when I did, I was asked how come I had set them to those values. I hadn't knowingly done that but it turns out that when you do the wattmeter calibration, these are the values that get changed. I was instructed to change them back to the default values---with the comment that one should never do the wattmeter calibration. I suggested that if this is the case, maybe the procedure should be removed from the manual. Setting these values back to default (at least the numbers I was instructed to use) and loosening and retightening the screw at the standoff at upper rear corner of the radio fixed the problem. Over the phone, we reviewed his crystal filter setup, redid the synthesizer calibration. Except for the above things seem to work. Suggestions at where to look next are welcome. He is unable to do the 5W wattmeter calibration because of no wattmeter. Hopefully the factory settings are close enough. There is also some ambiguity in that process. It tells you to put the AUT into the bypass mode (hold ATU). However, his K3 says the ATU isn't installed. (Two pages earlier in the manual under menu option enables it says to set KAT3 to BYP, which he did). These seem to be at odds with one another. Given the above, I strongly recommend using your car's stereo audio lt;system for AF output. Many vehicles have an AF aux input jack. For gt; those that don't, there are FM modulators such as the RadioPlay 300 (from Monster Mobile) or aftermarket devices that allow you to tap into the CD-radio interface. You could also use external amplified speakers. Thanks Wayne, for your prompt reply. I will check out this out. Presently I use an old Motorola mobile speaker with the IC-730. Most of my mobile ops are in a 1995 3/4 ton Chevy. No CD, but maybe can find an old cassette interface. Re: [Elecraft] [K3][TQ; ] would it be possible to return the reason we are in tx mode?
Thanks Dick, I suppose a program should be receiving `IC' state information rather frequently, to maintain synchronicity with the myriad state registers that are maintained and exposed by the K3's API. My hope was that the `TQ;' directive would be able to inform the programmer of the event by which the K3 had put itself into the `TQ1;' state. Perhaps this historical data simply isn't available, but, for instance, it would be of great value to know if the rear panel PTT had been asserted, or the user had manually pushed the front panel TX button, or the front panel Mic Jack had asserted PTT, or VOX was activated, or either the RST or DTR of the serial port had been asserted, or the K3 had received a CAT command that resulted in the K3 responding with `TQ1;'. It is of such great value, because of the high probability that two or more applications, and/or the various sound card interfaces, will be configured in ways which are incompatible with respect to controlling the transmit state of t he K3. An application that took advantage of this causal data would be very helpful in aiding the operator with the setup of new software or hardware that interfaced with the K3. I am not yet fluent in the API for the K3, but I have experienced anomalies with various applications, all claiming compatability with the K3, but they don't play well with others, perhaps because this information is simply not available to applications, which then prevents them from self configuration, and leads to race conditions, culminating in the K3 being seemingly stuck in transmit mode. As more and more, operators will be taking advantage of remote control of their SDR radios, it becomes impairitive that applications take on the responsibility of coordinating their control over the K3, such that the remote operator can have the necessary final and deterministic control over the tx status of their rig(s). That's the way I see it, at least. Maybe others have a different perspective. It wou ld be interesting to hear from the members on this reflector on the subject. Logic drive signals (up/down). You'd have a special TUNE mode that would bypass the internal ATU, if present, then adjust the antennas while watching for lowest SWR. All a small matter of programming in the KX3 itself. But the drive signals would need suitable buffering. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 27, 2011, at 12:46 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: Wayne, Thanks for the quick response. Hi all, Mike, NF3L, has been working hard on a PCsoftware application that allows blind hams to use the K3's menus, etc. He's putting the finishing touches on the first beta version, and he'd love to have a few more testers -- blind or sighted -- to give him some feedback. [Elecraft] Pelican 1510 Case
FYI The K3 barely fits in the 1510 case for those thinking about a hard case. The K3 just fits width wise in the case with no foam. Also there are protrusions into the bottom of the case where the wheels are located. I thought I could get more things inside the case than I was able to. A couple of extra inches of width would have been great but then I don't think the case will meet carry on guidelines. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Audio output
http://www.analog.com/en/audiovideo-products/audio-signal-processors/ad1990/products/product.html One problem with this class of device is the bridge tied outputs. The speaker(s) are no longer ground referenced - both sides must float. This increases RFI issues (not the RF chokes in the output) and will not allow the use of a three conductor jack for speaker output. 73, ... [Elecraft] KPA500 problems
It is out of great frustration that I write this. What's up with Elecraft and the KPA500? I was so excited when KPA500 arrived May 11th. It was a culmination of six months of waiting and saving and finally it was here! Having previously built my K3, P3 and W2, this time I chose to get it factory built, mostly because I would be operational a month or two so sooner. BUT when I set it up everything worked great except for 20 meters. It failed to put out anything more than 270W on 14.MHz. I contacted Dale at Elecraft and we went through some 'over the phone' tests. He said he would need to talk with the engineers and called me back later in the day with more tests to run. Bottom line.it needed to be returned. He said it looked like a problem with the low pass filter. I boxed it up, paid USPS the $50 to send it back and waited. So far, okay, a little disappointing, but okay. I am not superstitions, but that was Friday 13th. So yesterday I received the KPA500 back with a letter explaining the low output on 14 MHz was due to three failed capacitors in the low pass filter. They were repaired and an upgrade/mod was also performed: Front Panel VDD 5A Bypass Cap (I haven't a clue what that means.) It had been bench tested for four hours and KPA500 SN0026 meets or exceeds all factory specifications. Great. Good to go. And this is when it gets bad. I set all the cabling back up including the 1KW dummy load and turn the amp on..nothing. I check the rocker switch in back .nothing. Looking for troubleshooting info in the manual, I notice the instructions for setting up 115 vs. 220 voltage, and open the fuse box. Ah hah! No fuses .surprising because when I first got the amp it had fuses in place. There were a set of fuses included in the original packaging so I inserted them..turned it on.nothing.checked the fuses they were blown. And of course this is at 5:15 pm on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. I though I would get a few hours of hamming in with the new amp. No such luck. I'll go get a couple more fuses tomorrow and try again, but I am not hopeful. I have to wait until Tuesday to call which means I have no one to talk to about this. That's why I am posting this hard luck story, out of frustration. This is one Elecraft enthusiast who is really bummed out. I hope you have better luck. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 problems
Wow!! Bad news. Let's see if the amp can be made operational for the weekend. First, what size fuses did you put in? There are two different ratings supplied: 6A for 240 volt mains and 12A for 120 volt mains. If you have 120 V mains and used the left-over fuses they were probably the 6A and would not survive the current demand. Be sure you get the right replacements. I noted that many hardware stores carry 12A fast blow (that's the right kind) labeled as Microwave Oven Fuses. Before you turn on the unit with the new fuses, check the transformer tap setting as described in the Owner's manual under Installation. They may have changed it at the factory and not put it back to what you had. You want to be sure you replicate the tap setting you used before. If you don't remember, put the yellow wire on the TAP lug and check the voltages produced as shown in your Owner's manual. Hope this gets you on the air for some fun this weekend! 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of ai6ii Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 7:30 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 problems It is out of great frustration that I write this. Re: [Elecraft] rubber band vfo
Well it just so happen both my girls back tires were flat so I cut the tube out of one and reversed it and cleaned it and stuck it on the k2. Once I armor all it and get the powdery talc off of it I think it will look stock. definitely like the feel of it now. Also went ahead and took some 1/2 shrink wrap and reversed it so the markings wouldn’t show and cut out 5 pieces for the 5 knobs(AF Gain, RF Gain, Keyer, Power and RIT knob.) My harbor freight heat gun did the trick. Re: [Elecraft] CK722 transistor
Lee, I don't think I saved any, but I had a silver cased tall but square unit which I remember as the CK722. I remember it well because of the expense and how careful I had to be. I could be mistaken as I also used a ?2n384? device as well. Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Leigh L. What's up with Elecraft and the KPA500... Mike, This is an very unusual experience, and I'd like to apologize on behalf of my staff. (It's hard to imagine we would have left the fuses out. Ouch.) Re: [Elecraft] Dayton
FDIM is Four Days In May. This is some kind of mini-convention of QRP-ers in certain hotel outside of Dayton OH, that runs in parallel with the Hamvention. That what I was told, I am personally never been neither on FDIM nor the Hamvention. Maybe one day... 73, Igor, N1YX -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 11:29 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Dayton I just returned from the Dayton Hamvention a few days ago and am catching up on my emails. [Elecraft] KPA500 problems
Wow Mike, that's really bad luck and very frustrating. I've been about to order a KPA500 to go with my K3, but after your story, I might hang back a while. Bad news about having to ship your amp back, but not as expensive has having to ship it back to the US from down here. I wouldn't like to have to face that cost. But what puts me off the most is that there are mods/upgrades being done to serial # 26. I might wait a while before hitting the order button. Hope all gets sorted out for you Mike. As someone else said, at least you're dealing with Elecraft and you can be sure it WILL be sorted out in a timely manner. 73, John VK7JB This email was sent from Netspace Webmail: http://www.netspace.net.au __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
