Re: [Elecraft] Second Antenna Port

2012-02-08 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Mike,

I think that the second antenna port (without a tuner) was not high on
the list of the designcriteria when the K3 started off. Changing a full
grown product and full grown production line now is not wise. Not that
it cannot be done, but how much must one invest to get this done and how
many new K3's will have be sold to make a profit if many of the new k3
owners will take a tuner anyway? (I have one).

If your wish was on the list in the beginning and you were part of the
'inner circle' and fieldtestteam, and many others would have backed this
wish, the second antennaport would have been there. What I see is that
Elecraft gets a lot of the designcriteria from listening to customers.
This reflector is one of the important infochannels for that purpose. I
think the designteam of the K3 probably got 95% right.
IMHO they missed the 6m sensitivity thing. If most customers and the
'inner circle' are HF orientated, who would have thought of needing a
lower MDS on 6m. I would not have either! I am a HF man. But anyway,
they got that on solved with the piggy-back pre-amp.

But who am I to judge anyone? I was not there when decisions had to be
made. Nor was I part of any 'inner circle' or fieldtestteam. What I do
know is that now that I have a ful loaded K3, it amazes anyone at my
radioclub when we use it in a contest. (Of all the guys there, I'm the
only Eelecraft user). Others say that they love the RX, the use of the
IF-out (softrock-psdr-if-cwskimmer etc), the diversity reception, the
flexibility of the rig, sending special CAT-commands with the
F9-F12-keys to the K3, etc. And I agree.

I have my own frustration though. Just have to bring this up again. The
L-mix-R has so many options. Why not implement a Ab-Ba option? Left
channel Ab is normal volumelevel A mixed with -6dB (or so) level of
channel B and the right channel the other way around. I have asked for
this several times and it is only a firmware thing next to the A-b,
A-Ab, Ab-b, Ab-Ab, Ab-A, b-Ab, b-b, b-A, A-A. Oh well, if I'm the only
person that would like this feature implemented...

73 to all,
Arie PA3A

Re: [Elecraft] [QRO] KPA500 variation of PA current band-by-band

2012-02-08 Thread Brian Alsop
Guys,

On the other hand, there nothing wrong with trying to characterize the
beastie you have as best you can. If for no other reason to see if
something changes with time and how much.

Also, how does my kit comparing to other kits which presumable have
similar but not identical characteristics? Note with the exception of
the dummy load impedance, all instrumentation used is within the
KPA-500. For what it is worth, my measurements were made with a WATERS
1.5 kW dummy load which the KPA-500 thinks is 1.1 to 1 across the 9 HF
bands. Even if it were 1.5 :1 you're talking about introducing 20 watts
of reflected power. I assume the KPA-500 is reading forward power and
not forward-reflected. Thus these kinds of error would make the output
power read higher than reality, not lower.

Also look it at a learning experience. This is my first solid state
amp. I know what to expect from tube amps but not solid state ones.

How does a solid state amp behave in the efficiency department vs
frequency? When one sees it takes 16 amps on one band to produce 500
watts and 11 on another, there is plenty reason to raise questions and
want to understand why.

One thing uncovered already is that current is measured by a Hall effect
device instead of the time honored low value series resistor/voltmeter
combo. What is it's accuracy? Could that device's accuracy explain a
significant amount some of the variations seen.

To me it's about understaning my beastie.

Certainly people should not be castigated for asking questions. We are
not all EE's with 50 years experience and a shop full of precision
measuring equipment.

 Guy and all,

Yes, I personally have power instrumentation that is calibrated to the 5
% level up to 30 MHz. That level of precision has come at a goodly cost
 and effort.

In general, amateur quality power measurement gear should be given a +/-
20% range of error. There are variations due to frequency, variations
due to changes in the dummy load actual impedance, and if one is using
an antenna, any common mode RF current can substantially influence the
 readings on the meters.

In other words, what you see on your power meter may or may not reflect
reality. If there is any doubt about your results, tell me what your
results are when driving a known good 50 ohm non-reactive dummy load
(measure it with your antenna analyzer), and if a problem is indicated
with that load, then you can conclude that you have a transceiver
problem. If it is OK into that dummy load, but gives problems driving
your antenna, then you will have to solve the problem in your antenna field.

These are generalized statements and not directed at any particular
installation. If you and your indications are suspect, then investigate
your particular situation carefully (it is possible that we can help).

were designed, built and certified to a broadband tight uniformity (and
appropriately priced), if one WANTS exactly 500.0 watts from a KPA500 for
some purpose, and you actually trust your output measuring instrument to
deliver an accurate measurement to four figures, one just adjusts the
 drive, does one not?

This is ham gear, not lab instruments, but I would be intrigued to hear
what purpose this debated level of accuracy serves, other than light

Hi Gary, group, Elecraft support,

I think I have found a strong correlation between CW in SSB not
working and the QRQ setting. Here follows:

To make CW in SSB work: set CONFIG:QRQ to OFF, power-cycle the K3.

To break CW in SSB: set CONFIG:QRQ to ON, power-cycle the K3.

it temporarily by restoring the K3 firmware configs, but annoyingly it has
packed up again since then.

I *think* CW-in-SSB it might still work on some bands, not others. At
least, that's what I found last time I checked - I haven't checked lately.

I suspect there might be a cryptic bug in the firmware (the best kind!).

[Elecraft] Ab-Ba audio - was Second Antenna Port -

2012-02-08 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Igor,

Antenna switching is also very easy to implement outside the K3 or any
other trx. Still transceivers and also the KAT3 tuner are delivered with
2 antenna ports.

Just let me explain and share with everybody how I switch the K3 audio
and why I donot want to do this 'outboard'.
During the last CQ 160 CW at PI4D I had the main transmitting antenna
connected to the K3 Ant1 and a receive antenna to the RX ant connector.
I linked A and B VFO together with same mode, freq and fixed BW (400Hz)
and listened A-B, like diversity.
With the F-keys of N1MM you can send CAT commands to the K3 to change
A-B to A-A or B-B or any other implemented combo and back with a single
keystroke. Thank you Elecraft and N1MM programmers for making this possible.
When working in split I sure would like my Ab-Ba setup, also with a
single keystroke and not by a external switch. For this is has to be
implemented in the Config.

By the way: The Ab-Ba setup is implemented in a FT1000MP as a standard
listening method when you listen to main and sub RXs. I often wonder
why my repeated request for the Ab-Ba was ignored. Maybe because I am
just some PA3A. Oh yes, I got one answer once about 2 years ago: It did
not fit the display: the B could be read as a 8. Oh boy.. But times
are new. It might happen.

interested, just let me know. I'll be happy to share this.

It does not mean this feature is used often. I sometimes (very seldom) need
antenna tuner but almost never use the second antenna port. So there were no
point for me to pay for this feature.
Having said that, I often use SubRx connector for the sub RX.

When working in split I sure would like my Ab-Ba setup, also with a single

I use external 3 position switch for the same purpose. Most of the time
(95%) main radio in the left ear and sub radio in the right. When there is
need to pull out weak signal from one of the directions I can put one radio
into both ears. The switch is near the keyboard so no problems to do
switching. But external switching allows also the use of the 3rd radio (
mult hunting on a different band) where one can mix the third radio into one
of the 2 channels. This mix can be regulated (balanced) with the resistor
pot installed in the same external box. Should I need more options it can
all be easily implemented externally.

[Elecraft] [K3] Interest in Custom 700 Hz 8-pole INRAD Filters?

2012-02-08 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Given the lack of response to N8CEP's recent WTB Reflector message, we are
curious if there's sufficient interest to warrant another production run.
FYI, although 700 Hz was originally requested by CW ops who felt that 1000
Hz was too wide and 500 Hz too narrow, digital mode enthusiasts have since
discovered that 700 Hz is also ideal for some of the newer 500 Hz modes.

Assuming a manufacturing lead-time of 13 weeks, the next batch should
arrive in plenty of time for Field Day. Provided that is, that we can
spread the word fast enough to reach our minimum order target of 20 pieces
by the end of February. (Presently we're at 2, so we need 18 more.)

Please email us at support@unpcbs.com to get in on this next batch.
(We call that placing a pre-order.) Or, visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ to
learn more, including how to follow this topic on Facebook.

happen to hit me. Judging from their posts, they may be able to
recover the missing sections. This is purely a guess but they did
retrieve some of the lost QSOs while still on the island. Luckily,
they were so loud for so long that everyone had many chances to snag
them on any given band/mode, and re-work them if necessary.

The VP6T logs were great. The best was a Liberian expedition last year
that had real-time logging; your call was in the on-line log before
the last dit had died away.

[Elecraft] RQRE: K3: CW in SSB mode broken?

2012-02-08 Thread Gary Hinson
I concur Frank.

I have QRQ turned on 'permanently' and use QSK a lot, which I guess could be
the reason CW-in-SSB is mostly broken for me (and you I guess) but not for
everyone.

I just checked as you suggested: in sequence ...
1. I had been using CW on 30m. Changing the rig to SSB mode and hitting
the paddle gave the sidetone and triggered the PTT line but produced no RF
out i.e. CW-in-SSB was broken.
2. Power-cycling the rig made no difference. It's still broken.
3. Turning QRQ off in the menu made no difference. It's still broken.
4. Power cycling the rig (with QRQ still configured off) restored
CW-in-SSB. It works! I fixed it!
5. Turning QRQ back on made no difference. It still works!
6. Power cycling the rig (this time with QRQ configured on) broke it again.

So it seems I can reliably break and fix CW-in-SSB depending on whether QRQ
is on or off then I power-cycle the rig ... BUT ... there is ALSO some
dependency with the band and mode the rig is in when it is power cycled.

On 6m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on does not break CW-in-SSB.
On 10m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on DOES break CW-in-SSB. Power
cycling with QRQ off fixes it.
On 12m, power cycling the rig with QRQ on DOES break CW-in-SSB. Power
cycling with QRQ off partially fixed it i.e. the first dit gave power out
but then it broke.
On 15m, same as 10m.
On 17m, same as 10m.
On 20m, same as 10m.
On 30m, same as 10m.
On 40m, same as 10m.
On 80m, same as 10m.
On 160m, same as 10m.

Those results on both 6m and 12m are interesting. The 6m result is
repeatable (which means *provided* I *always* remember to QSY to 6m before I
switch off the K3 at night, CW-in-SSB will still work in the morning!) but I
cannot reproduce that 12m result where it sent just one dit before breaking.
How odd! Now 12m behaves like 10m.

I though I would also check whether it matters how I turn QRQ on/off. All
the testing above was done using the CW QRQ option on the menu to toggle it,
but in CW mode with QRQ configured ON, QRQ can also be toggled on/off by
hitting RIT or XIT. Now I discovered that on 30m, power cycling with QRQ on
while the rig is in CW mode does NOT break CW-in-SSB, but power cycling with
the rig while it is in SSB mode DOES break CW-in-SSB. So again, *provided*
I *always* remember to turn the to rig to CW (or I suspect any mode other
than SSB - it's fine in data mode, I haven't tested the others) before I
switch off the K3 at night, it looks like CW-in-SSB will still work in the
morning!

Yet another finding: I can toggle QRQ off/on/off/on repeatedly using the
RIT/XIT button in CW mode. But if I power cycle the rig while QRQ is
configured on but toggled off with RIT/XIT (let's call that QRQ
suspended), it will no longer toggle back on with RIT/XIT after the K3
restarts. In other words, the rig 'forgets' that it was in the QRQ
suspended mode. The rig does 'remember' the setting of RIT/XIT after a
power cycle but the RIT/XIT frequency offset is cancelled back to 0.

 Hi Gary, group, Elecraft support,

I think I have found a strong correlation between CW in SSB not working
and
 the QRQ setting. Here follows:

To make CW in SSB work: set CONFIG:QRQ to OFF, power-cycle the K3.

To break CW in SSB: set CONFIG:QRQ to ON, power-cycle the K3.

 Hi Frank.

I have the same problem: CW in SSB no longer works on K3#2887 running
firmware 4.39. I raised this on the reflector some months back and
went around the loop changing config settings, PTT, QRQ etc. I did
manage to fix it temporarily by restoring the K3 firmware configs, but
annoyingly it has packed up again since then.

I *think* CW-in-SSB it might still work on some bands, not others. At
 least, that's what I found last time I checked - I haven't checked
lately.

I suspect there might be a cryptic bug in the firmware (the best kind!).

[Elecraft] K3 Transmit current drain

2012-02-08 Thread Edward R. Cole
Bill,

Yes, good lesson in ohm's law, that too often is overlooked.

So the current draw dropped for 20A to 11.7A. That means you were
heating your lamp cord with 8.3A at 12.7v (= 105w). Not necessarily
bad on a cold winter's night (humour)! But actually a waste of
electrical power and perhaps a safety issue.

I recently wired a 150w amp to a 28v PS (assume 250w dc load), the
wiring has to carry 9A. I ran some #12awg zip cord
(red/black). Seeing about 0.5v drop in the cable, which is about
4-foot long, under load.

This is temp as the PS and amp will be installed in a 19-inch wide
standard cabinet where the dc cabling will be about 12-inch. MY 300w
HF amp will also run from this PS and needs about 4-feet dc
wiring. I guess a swap is indicated. the 300w amp draws 20A which
might even suggest 10awg wiring?

The real ohms law test is the 50v 50A draw (2500w) that will be made
by the 1100w 6m sspa. I got some #8 for that (doubled up).

73, Ed - KL7UW

Thanks to the many who pointed out that the K3 draws a high current even at
low power once you get above the 12 watt level, due to the bias for the
power amp. I never considered this, and so when I made up a power cable to
operate indoors with my MFJ 4225 switching power supply, I used a single
light weight lamp cord at six feet long and a cigar lighter plug for the
power cord. My reasoning being I would only operate low power, not more than
30-35 watts indoors with my antenna right over my head. So, either the lamp
cord was too light, or the cigar lighter plug had too much drop for the
current being drawn, and so the current meter in the K3 was indicating 20
amps being drawn at only 30 watts output.
Once I fixed the power cord by using two #18 ga. lamp cords in parallel to
spade lugs rather than the cigar lighter plug, the K3 now draws 11.73 amps @
12.7 volts, with 35 watts output, from the MFJ 4225 power supply, which
seems more normal than the previous 20 amps at the same power out setting.

I hope my experience saves someone else some grief.

Iain,

I have a 5000A RX2 and don't use a KPA 5000 but I do have a Kenwood 922A.  Here
are a couple of things for you to check.  The easiest is to check the Antenna
tab at the top of the main form and make sure the Switch Relay with TR section
has something checked.  On my rig it's TX1 (Red).  For some reason, every time
I power down PowerSDR I have to recheck it.  With out it, your Flex won't key
the linear.

If that's okay, reset your database.  I have had databases get corrupted and I
was getting no power or low power out.  You may want to go through the tabs
first and write down your settings if you don't have them already.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 sub receiver

2012-02-08 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
If you're interesting in chasing DXpeditions that run split pileups
(listening up), the sub-RX is very useful for tracking where they're
listening, so you can be calling where you're likely to be heard -
listen to the DX on one receiver and tune around with the other,
looking for the guy giving a 599 report or look for a hole
where no one else is calling.

The sub-RX could also be used to monitor some calling frequency,
perhaps even on another band, as you operate with the main-RX.

If you're not interested in those styles of operating, you probably
don't need the KRX3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 sub receiver

2012-02-08 Thread Rick Bates
Hi John,

For one it makes working DX a bit easier. Not only can you work split, with
the second receiver, you can hear BOTH sides of the split. Big deal? Well
for one thing that ability allows you to figure out the pattern of the DX
station (moving up/down?). That makes you more effective in operating and
increases your chances.

Then if you're a tailgater, you're spot on the attack when the other station
is done. (I don't approve of tailgating, but some DX'ers allow it.)

It's 'secrets' like this that add up to greater success. Every little edge
helps.

Rick WA6NHC

As for diversity, it's great for weak signals as each antenna 'fades' at
different moments but your brain glues them together so you can hear more.
A simple loop or wire antenna would be sufficient additions to your SteppIR.

John,

Depending on your operating interest you may or may not need/want the second
receiver. If you do now or in the future chase DX the 2nd rcvr is almost
required to work stations that xmit on one freq. and listen on another freq.
a couple of Khz up or down.

Regardless of your operating interest you WILL enjoy building and operating

[Elecraft] K2 remote antenna tuner question

I'm shopping for a remote antenna tuner that will work well with my

2012-02-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
The Elecraft T-1 tuner if you need an external tuner that will work with
many transceivers.
If you willl only be using it with the K2/10, I highly recommend the
Elecraft KAT2. It will remember the settings for 2 antennas per band
and works seamlessly with the K2.

If your need is for a remote tuner that can be located at the antenna
feedpoint, then the LDG or other similar tuners are the best choice.

[Elecraft] K2 remote antenna tuner question

2012-02-08 Thread Rose
Hi Ron,

I tried an LDG tuner operated remotely in an enclosure at the base of a
125'
tower with 120 radials. It was powered with a local 115VAC - 12VDCPS.

I had two failures, and even though LDG fixed the tuner under warranty,
I gave up and sold it. They couldn't ... or wouldn't ... tell me the cause
of the failures. Before I purchased the tuner I asked them about low
temperature survival and the said they had no idea. I'm in Montana
where the temperatures can reach -40F, and the tower can attract
quite a static charge from blowing snow.

Take your pick for the cause of the failures. (;-)

I had a friend with an SGC tuner that worked well. If you go the SGC
route, take careful note of the power rating. That's why I didn't buy an
SGC.

2012-02-08 Thread Mike WA8BXN
Hi Ron,

I have a couple of those LDG tuners and like them. I have no experience with
the SGC tuners.

I did have a problem with the LDG tuner in single digit F temps, but the
winter has been mild here and that was only one night. I think I could
easily run an extension cord out to where the tuner enclosure is (a plastic
mailbox) and put a 100 watt light bulb in it to turn on when it gets cold.

With a little extra work you can run power to the LDG tuner via the coax.
Probably the same could be done with the SGC tuner.

is still below zero F during the day and quite a bit cooler at night
(when I'd be home to operate).

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 remote antenna tuner question

I'm shopping for a remote antenna tuner that will work well with my
K2/10. At the moment I'm favouring the LDG Z11ProII and building a
Weather proof container to put it in. The LDG draws little current and
May be battery powered. SGC make outdoor tuners and they have a wide
Temperature operating range, down to -35C. However they need external
 Power.

Customer service is important to me, as is reliability.

 Recommendations?
