[Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-28 Thread Richard Fjeld
I am looking at this as an rfi issue first and foremost. I am going to clean
up a little bit inside the shack. That particular K3 has been suffering with
unusual noise with my new SteppIR three element that was put up less than a
 month ago.

I have an 80 meter loop fed with homebrew ladder-line to an Ameritron ATR-30
tuner with an internal 1:1 balun. No (known) RFI on all bands, 80-10.

But, I have a commercial tri-band beam fed with coax. (It has a balun at the
feed-point). When I am operating 20 meter CW, it sets off the battery operated
smoke detector in the hallway to our bedroom. Go figure! Not good when
operating at night with my wife sleeping. She panicked. That alarm is
extremely piercing.

I put a MFJ-915 RF Isolator in line with the coax. So far, so good, but need
more time on 20. It may be frequency specific, also. If it continues to be a
problem, I will relocate the smoke detector to the garbage can.

[Elecraft] K2 Software Problem?

2012-07-28 Thread g3naq
My K2/100 has suddenly stopped working. If it was an RF problem, I would have
some idea where to start. But when I switch it on, 'ELEC appears on the
display, but there it stays. So what do I do next?
Please don't tell me to look for dry joints, wire whiskers, bent IC pins, or
similar - I am an experienced constructor, and have checked for all these!

Re: [Elecraft] UPS has lost my KX3 :-(

2012-07-28 Thread Frode LA2RL
Hi,

Many of you wonder how this could happen. It is simple. UPS Norway uses the
local postal service to deliver parcels to places outside the big cities.
For these deliveries they print new address labels which they then stick on
to the parcels. What happened is that two labels ended up on the wrong
boxes. Luckily it seems that only two boxes got swapped and I now know who
has got my box. Unfortunately it is not somewhere close so I will have to
wait until next week when UPS Norway will take contact with me for further
information and instructions. So I am pretty sure things will end up OK.
Very soon now ...

I should also like to add that Vicki and April from Elecraft wasted no time
in taking contact with me and their worries and concern that I might not
get my KX3 is time is very comforting. Clearly Elecraft is more than a
company, it is like family that is there to help you when you are in need
of help. Many thanks Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K3 Memory store and recall behavior

2012-07-28 Thread Cady, Fred
When you store something in one of the memories, if both VFO A and B
frequencies are on the same band, both frequencies are saved. Say you
have 14.000 in A and 14.060 in B and you store them in Quick Memory 0
with VM. When restoring VFO A and B with MV, it restores both VFO's
frequencies only if both VFOs are on 14 MHz. If both VFOs are on a
different band, say 15 m or if VFO B is on a different band than VFO A,
it only restores VFO A to 14.000.

The dual situation is that when VFO A and B are on different bands, VM
only saves VFO A. I guess that is consistent with the above but it is
counterintuitive to me. I would think that VM would save both VFO A and
B freqs and MV would restore both.

CONFIG MEM 0-9 is nor and the latest firmware.

73 and cheers,
KE7X

[Elecraft] Birdies If Backlight off

2012-07-28 Thread hb9trt
Hi

I found some birdies in the KX3 on the 20m band which are only there if the
backlight is of. If I turn the backlight on, the birdies are gone. I think
10 ore more can be found and all disappeared if the backlight is on. Maybe
there are also birdies corresponding to the same effect on other bands. I
don't tried it yet.
Does anyone have an idea why. I wondering about that, normally I expect such
effects if the backlight is on not off

Geoff,

Have you tried pulling and then reseating the MCU on the Control Board? My

[Elecraft] [K3] GFI outlet, 100W on 20m, and *poof* (RFI?)

2012-07-28 Thread John Shadle
Hi all,
I realize that this is tangentially related to Elecraft gear since I'm
using a K3 and experiencing this issue, but I thought someone else may
have some knowledge to share with me to help me solve my problem.

Recently I stopped using a 25' long extension cord to power my
computer, power supply, and other accessories and installed a 2 gang
box directly off of the main electrical panel, where my shack happens
to be (in the basement). While our basement is waterproofed, it still
has a concrete floor, which requires a GFI outlet (according to my
electrician). To do my due diligence, I installed one GFI in the 2
gang box and 1 regular 3-prong grounded outlet. I have my shack
computer, my power supply, and my transformer for my SGC SG-231
autotuner plugged into this.

Last night I tuned up (15W) 20m and was hoping to work some DX. My SWR
showed 2.0:1 on my SWR meter and on the K3. All is good. When I keyed
down with 100W, the GFI tripped and my shack computer, power supply,
etc. shut off.

I'm using Leviton smartlockpro 20A GFCI outlets from Home Depot.
They're not cheap, but maybe they don't have adequate RFI protection
(obviously).

I suppose the first solution is to remove the GFI from the situation,
but I thought using it was the right thing to do. Any personal
anecdotes or advice would be welcome.

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Computer Interface for digital modes

2012-07-28 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Pin 1 problem refers to an issue originally identified in professional
and broadcast audio equipment where pin 1 of the XLR connector was not
connected directly to the shielded case *at the connector* but instead
connected to the circuit common elsewhere in the device in question.

On SUB-D-25 pin 1 is shield, so I guess you refer to shielding/ground
loop problems? The now much more common SUB-D-9 only has data ground,
on pin 5... and pin 1 there is DCD.

A properly installed DB25 (RS-232C) bonds the shell, pin 1 (shield) and
pin 7 (signal ground) to the circuit board ground plane and device case
at the connector. A properly installed DB9 (EIA/TIA 574) bonds the
shell and pin 5 (signal ground) to the circuit board ground plane and
device case at the connector.

Any device that does not bond the shell of a DB series connector and
all grounds/signal returns to the chassis and circuit board ground
plane *at the connector* has a potential pin 1 problem. In the case
of the Signalink USB, the pin 1 problem is on the RJ-45 since both
audio and circuit (PTT) returns float on the circuit board before
returning to the ground plane via long/thin traces. The device
violates proper design principles by *not* properly bonding all
grounds and circuit returns.

Yes they can be sensitive but that's the beauty of Home Depot. Return it to

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GFI outlet, 100W on 20m, and *poof* (RFI?)

2012-07-28 Thread David Christ
Code requirements are there for a reason and are only put in place
after much thought and discussion. I would take the GFI out only as
a last resort. Also RF is not necessarily the problem. I had one
unit that would trip every time I turned a large 21 CRT monitor on.
Changed brands and all was OK.

Mikes suggestion to try another unit or brand is sound. If that
doesn't work then instead of going without GEI I would look at the
station installation and how units are bonded and grounded. If there
is RF in the shack cure it. Also make sure the wiring was done
properly. Eliminating the GFI does not solve the problem, it only
masks the symptom.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GFI outlet, 100W on 20m, and *poof* (RFI?)

2012-07-28 Thread Lou Voerman W2ROW
You could also try moving the GFCI to the panel box by installing a GFCI
breaker in the panel box and replacing the GFCI outlet with a normal one.
This might solve the problem by increasing the distance between the RFI
source and the breaker. Also the shielding provided by the panel box may
help.

Of course this assumes you do not have anything on the circuit which you
would not want GFCI for (like lights, smoke detectors etc.)

[Elecraft] Weird happening this morning

2012-07-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
While trying to work CY9M (I got 'em) I had the K3 set up for split, split was
showing in the window, had VFO B set to about 3 KHz UP where they were
listening. The P3's cursor stayed purple (including the one on the SVGA
display) and I got yelled at for transmitting on the DX station's frequency.
First time I've ever had the K3 display SPLIT on the LCD and not actually be
in that mode.

Anyone else have this happen? Either before or since 4.51?

[Elecraft] Follow up on Weird happening this morning

2012-07-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
In trying to duplicate this, I turned split off, and then turned it back on
using the SPLIT key (hold AB) and split shows on the K3's LCD, but VFO B
Cursor on both the P3 and SVGA stay purple and split does not operate properly
on the K3 - TX stays on VFO A.

I did have DATA display turned on on the SVGA.

Immediately after I turned DATA display off, the cursors changed to red and VFO
B went to the proper frequency. I verified this with a frequency counter.

For Paul Saffren,
There appears to be an improper interaction between the P3/SVGA and the K3's
SPLIT mode when the Data display is active. The band where this happened was
15 meters and the mode was CW.

I'm now going to run a few further checks to see if this is global or just on
one band. Everyone else using the SVGA and the Beta FW for the Data display
might want to watch for this as well..

[Elecraft] Another followup to Weird happening

2012-07-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
The problem I reported IS global. It occurs on all bands. With the P3 SVGA's
data display enabled, it seems to inhibit the K3 from actually entering SPLIT
mode even though the SPLIT indicator shows in the K3's LCD display. I've
confirmed by measuring the K3's output with a frequency counter that even
though SPLIT is showing, the K3 is still transmitting on VFO A's frequency.
The VFO B does not change to RED . The VFO B frequency DOES read the frequency
it's set at and the purple cursor moves properly as you change the VFO B
frequency.

FW in use in the K3 is 4.51 and in the P3, Beta 01.17 as reported by both
devices.

The temporary solution to the problem is to disable the data display before

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Computer Interface for digital modes

2012-07-28 Thread Barry LaZar
Like I said your characterization is a bit off. The built in sound card
buys you a lot.

Second if frequency is a control is a must, my computer can do it using
any number of software packages. One of those packages is NaP3. It turns
your radio into a full bore SDR with computer control. If this isn't
satisfactory, one of the present PowerSDR packages allows VAC usage.
Once that is set up, you can do what ever you want with complete
computer control. It may take a bit of playing around, but it can work.
However, you will definitely need two sound cards, and a second monitor
wouldn't hurt either.

All of the dongles I have seen are very simplistic, ergo cheap. This
approach is a little more expensive, but it allows a greater range of
possibilities. I still stand by what I said and suggest this approach.

That PTT does nothing to provide early PTT to switch amplifiers or

So, I'd say your characterization is a bit off.

No, my characterization is dead on the money - overpriced, and under

 for amplifier/preamp switching.

It does not provide any USB to serial functions and no access to TxD,

The alternative to the WestMountain Radio Nomic is a Buxcomm Rascal

[Elecraft] More info on the SPLIT problem

2012-07-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
I've also found that if you are IN split with the data display active, you
can't exit split (even though the K3's SPLIT indicator goes away, it's still
using the VFO B frequency for transmit.

So, if you want to use SPLIT and the P3/SVGA data display, disable the display
before turning SPLIT on and again before turning SPLIT off. If you don't do
this, split appears to not work properly..

I have no way of determining if the glitch is in the BETA FW or something in
the K3's FW that isn't reading commands from the P3/SVGA

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Computer Interface for digital modes

2012-07-28 Thread Barry LaZar
I see. The real issue is amplifier turn on timing. As I don't use an
amplifier as QRO to me is a 100 Watts. I can't address the issue from
experience. However, I suspect that there is an easy fix since all high
power users face the same issue, particularly on CW. Someone needs to
check to see is there is a delay built in to the PTT function the allows
the amplifier to turn on when the PTT is keyed in proper sequence. I
know this is not an issue with my Orion II, and I infer from those who
do operate at the full legal limit around my neighborhood that this
issue is a non-issue; a lot of them are using FT-1000s and K3s

After mulling this over as I write this response, I come away with the
idea that a parameter in the transmitter keying menu has not been
changed to account for the amplifier turn on delay. Someone should check
that.

The first thing that I would check is the green ground, i.e. the
grounding wire. For something like this, it should go directly to the
ground bus inside the entrance panel, not tied in with any other green
ground. Are you using metal conduit / Thinwall or PVC? If metal,
check the grounding. They make hubs that have a screw terminal for
just that purpose.

Second, make sure that your station equipment is bonded to each other
and grounded to a common ground that is bonded to the house ground.
This is important both for RFI reduction and for safety.

If that doesn't alleviate the problem, contact the Leviton technical
assistance folks. This may be a known problem and they may have a fix
for that model of GFCI, or s others have said, try a different brand or
convert
the circuit breaker to a GFCI type - maybe the best bet.

Hard to diagnose this at long distance.

I put a MFJ-915 RF Isolator in line with the coax. So far, so good,

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Computer Interface for digital modes

2012-07-28 Thread Wes Stewart
Although I respect the comments from the experts (and Lance and I worked on
two-meters thirty years ago) I must say that I use a Signallink on HF RTTY
running a K3 and a venerable Drake L-4B without issue.

If I was still on EME then of course I would have the full sequenced keying
hardware.  The Signallink is exactly what is described below, and I realize
that I can, and have used the K3, with the built-in soundcard on my laptop but
I have other uses for that card.  Furthermore, I acquired the Signalink when I
was using my prior transceiver so it's on hand.

So despite its alleged failings, the Signalink has some usefulness in some
applications.

running
any kind of power on digital modes because of the cheap and dirty way they try
to
claim that they have PTT control, when all they really have is VOX.   What I
was
talking about, and what most EME'ers and serious VHF'ers require, is an ADVANCE
PTT
command (which is very thoughtfully provided by WSJT programs) so that
everything can
be switched and settled into place BEFORE any signals are generated by the
transmitter.    If all you do is HF QRP, then the Signalink is probably all you
will
ever need.  If you ever go QRO, it will pay you to do it right the first time
and get
a fully capable interface!   GL and VY 73, Lance

The SignaLink uses the radio's PTT on the mic connector to switch from rx to

sound card that does work better than the one in my laptop. All power is
taken from the USB connection to the computer. It's a complete, easy to set
up and use package. With the additional sound card, I can do other things.
So, I'd say your characterization is a bit off.

Signalink USB is nothing more than a repackaged $10 USB audio dongle.
It does not provide any USB to serial functions and no access to TxD,
RxD, DTR, RTS. Lance specifically needed TxD and RxD for computer
logging and RTS for advanced PTT.

The alternative to the WestMountain Radio Nomic is a Buxcomm Rascal
with a custom serial cable that splits RxD/TxD to the rig and DTR/RTS
to the Rascal then to the rig.

Re: [Elecraft] More info on the SPLIT problem

2012-07-28 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Jim,

I can confirm that there is something weird happening with the red cursor
(split transmit freq) on the P3 and on the external monitor when the SVGA
Data mode is activated. Looking at the K3, the little arrow is still
pointing to VFO B and the amber delta f LED is lit. Unfortunately I don't
have the means to determine if I am actually transmitting on VFO A freq or
VFO B freq. I'd like to think that it is just a P3 glitch but extra care
should certainly be taken until this problem is totally understood.

73,
Mike K2MK

Jim Sheldon-2 wrote

I've also found that if you are IN split with the data display active, you
can't exit split (even though the K3's SPLIT indicator goes away, it's
still using the VFO B frequency for transmit.

So, if you want to use SPLIT and the P3/SVGA data display, disable the
display before turning SPLIT on and again before turning SPLIT off. If
you don't do this, split appears to not work properly..

I have no way of determining if the glitch is in the BETA FW or something
in the K3's FW that isn't reading commands from the P3/SVGA

While trying to work CY9M (I got 'em) I had the K3 set up for split, split was
showing in the window, had VFO B set to about 3 KHz UP where they were
listening. The P3's cursor stayed purple (including the one on the SVGA
display) and I got yelled at for transmitting on the DX station's frequency.
First time I've ever had the K3 display SPLIT on the LCD and not actually be
in that mode.

Anyone else have this happen? Either before or since 4.51?

[Elecraft] K2 Dial Calibration Question

2012-07-28 Thread KC9QQ
I have noticed that my K2 dial calibration seems to match my ICOM 756 Pro III
for all CW stations. However, when I compare signals SSB signals the K2
seems to be off by about 200 cycles. Is this a dial calibration issue or
something related to the filters?

I had not noticed this until I installed the K2IO and started to use Spot
Collector spots to tune the rig through the K2IO. When I tune in spots I
noticed that they are off by about 200 cycles. I only use the rig for CW
QRP so I had not noticed this before. I do not have a K2 SSB adapter in the
rig.

Re: [Elecraft] Emailing: k3fw4r47.zip

2012-07-28 Thread Adrian
Ok , well I did exactly what you are looking at doing yesterday.

Basically just extract the zip file to a folder location on your pc .
Then use your ''browse'' in P3 utility under firmware tab to locate that
folder.

Ensure the menu advanced function is active so you can select which files
will be sent to the P3.
The right side column will show the older firmware checked (in checkbox)
files against the left column
existing new files you have loaded.

Use the send checked files to K3 (These should already be checked by
default) to K3, and it will go through a firmware downgrade .
Then you are good to go.

If you do get a mcu ld error with tx light on, then unplug the APP connector
power in for a minute close port on P3 Utility.
Then (after a minute) power on holding power button in for 10 seconds until
TX ind flashes.

Screen will be unlit with mcu ld visible. Close port on P3 Utility, a
firmware required popup should occur and you can redo the firmware
downgrade as previous. Then you are good to go with a good decoder.

Cheers

To: Adrian
Subject: Re: Emailing: k3fw4r47.zip

Adrian, that's exactly what I wanted to do as I am using the new P3 digital
modes and find the decoding is not up to par.

However, the K3 utility wants to only go up in firmware so I am not sure
how to get it to recognize an older version for installation.

I got into trouble earlier and it took me three hours to reboot my K3 as it
went dead, I was trying to intall 4.50 at the time and could not get the
utility to recognize it.

I wasted a lot of time on that one.

It could be either the VFO or the filters or both.

Go to my webpage www.w3fpr.com and follow the instructions in the K2

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Keith,

You could also have a loose connection in your microphone cable. When
operating SSB, if there is no audio, there will be no RF output.
So you can look at the PTT, the audio, the power supply, and just about
every thing else in your station. Cables are usually the weak link.

Keith,

You could also have a loose connection in your microphone cable. When
operating SSB, if there is no audio, there will be no RF output.
So you can look at the PTT, the audio, the power supply, and just about
every thing else in your station. Cables are usually the weak link.

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA USB Keyboard

2012-07-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
Someone posted a link to this keyboard on eBay a while back and before finding
out whether or not it worked, I ordered one. There was another post or two
saying it didn't work and that it was maybe an apple keyboard. Cost on eBay
had been $19.95 with free shipping.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/320763719297?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Well, I got it in today, and first hooked it up to one of my HP laptop's USB
ports. Fired up and ran straight off. The external KB I had on the laptop
originally got snatched to plug into the P3. Since this one worked on the PC
laptop, I swapped them again, plugging the little 78 key KB from eBay into the
P3. Turned it on, enabled the data display and immediately got the asterisk on
the status line. Tested CAPS lock and NUM lock and the lights lit up, so I
started typing and yup, got characters in the TX buffer window so I did a quick
test with a bunch of VVV and my call - KB locked up from RF! (I had the KPA500
on and set to about 600W). Cycled power on the P3, re-enabled data and the KB
worked again. I had a bunch of split ferrites designed to kill RFI coming out
of monitors so I wrapped 3 turns of the cable through 2 of them - one right at
the KB and the other as close to the USB plug as I could get it. I don't know
the ferrite type material, but they are ATI bran
d and part # is 500500. I had gotten them from a surplus outfit called
Electronics Goldmine last year sometime.

Ran the test again with the KPA500 running 600 watts on 20 meters and no lockup
so hopefully it will continue to work. BTW, I had the same problem with the
other PC KB and used the same type ferrites on it with equally good results.

Anyway, to whoever posted the original link, THANKS!

Saw another link to that rubberized roll-up keyboard earlier today, and it
was cheap enough even with the shipping out of China it was less than 10 bucks
so I ordered one of those too. I hate the internal keyboards on most laptops
and it that one works, it will easily fit in my laptop's carry bag. THANKS to
whoever posted this one as well.

While trying to work CY9M (I got 'em) I had the K3 set up for split, split
was showing in the window, had VFO B set to about 3 KHz UP where they were
listening. The P3's cursor stayed purple (including the one on the SVGA
display) and I got yelled at for transmitting on the DX station's
frequency. First time I've ever had the K3 display SPLIT on the LCD and
not actually be in that mode.

Anyone else have this happen? Either before or since 4.51?

Re: [Elecraft] Where is 4.39

2012-07-28 Thread ab2tc
Problems like this can be avoided by following these guidelines for upgrading
the firmware:

1. Find the upgrade on Elecraft's site and download them to a new folder on
your hard drive. It may take a little bit of hunting but it is always
possible.
2. Open the appropriate utility and steer it to the directory where your
downloaded update resides.
3. Perform the upgrade, taking all files from the upgrade directory.
4. Don't delete the upgrade directory unless you are sure that you will
never want to go back to it. Downgrading is no problem as long as you have a
local copy of it. Truth is that with hard drives now routinely 500GB+ there
is really no reason to ever delete a firmware version. I never have for my
K3 and I have carried then across at least one computer upgrade.

AB2TC - Knut

Toby, I sent you 4.47, and can send you 4.39 later when I am in the shack.

Thanks Adrian,

Shipping to the US was only $1.89 or something miniscule like that - I
didn't even worry about that. Typical slow boat from China though, last
thing I ordered from there under similar circumstances took about a week and
a half to get it. Again, not a problem to me.

The little silver top one that someone else posted a link to works fine
unless subjected to heavy RF fields like I happen to have in the shack when
I run the amp as my antennas are pretty close in to the house. I need to
find a good, fairly inexpensive source of type 31 and type 43 split ferrites
that are small enough for almost a snug fit on 3/16 or at least as small as
1/4 so I can keep the RF from getting into the KB on it's cable. Some of
this Chinese stuff doesn't have very good RF suppression, so cheap isn't
necessarily best - LOL.

Disconnecting the P3 before K3 power up, after a mcu ld issue is required
and I forgot to mention that. Plug P3 supply back after the K3 firmware has
been completed. Sounds like you were good, but I just remembered that.

Now, I am wondering what settings you have in your rig which gives you
really good decode. I am working on that now. I have the AGC threshold set
to 8 with the SLP set to 7.

Set SLP to 0. AGC at 8 is good.

I have theTEXT DEC set to threshold of 5 and 30 to 90 wpm.

Yes the 30-90wpm works the best even at slow speeds. I use a narrow filter.
Set threshold for clean pulses on the cwt display after spotting (centre)
the signal. Then use filter width and/or rf gain to fine tune. I get perfect
results most of the time, and using this method on noisy lower bands works
well.
Just check the cwt is pulsing with the cw, then you are close. The fine tune
is reflected in the print.

I just noticed my P3 cursor will not move so have another issue HI Check
for tracking mode or disable re-enable svga etc.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GFI outlet, 100W on 20m, and *poof* (RFI?)

2012-07-28 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
We have this same problem every year using my RV for field day. The GFI's
in the RV control nearly every outlet. 100 watts to a nearby antenna, and
the GFI's trip nearly every outlet. For this last June, I wired a special
circuit to the main panel to give the operating position it's own GFI-free
outlet. End of problems.

Turns out the GFI's are a special kind, designed just for walls in RV's,
and you're pretty much stuck with what you have.

 Hi all,
I realize that this is tangentially related to Elecraft gear since I'm
using a K3 and experiencing this issue, but I thought someone else may
have some knowledge to share with me to help me solve my problem.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA Mouse click tune

2012-07-28 Thread Dale Boresz
Any chance that the Keyboard connector on the rear panel of the P3 might
one day support a mouse, offering point and click tune functionality?
(point to the desired signal on the P3 using the mouse/cursor; click the
mouse button; K3 tunes to that frequency; op uses K3 main tuning knob to
tweak the tuning as needed)

My operation is about 95% cw, and click tuning sure would make it easy
to quickly get to a signal at the other end of the current cw band
within the current 'span'. The same benefit would exist for SSB as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity Receive is too quiet

2012-07-28 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Note that the PRE/ATT setting for AUX RF BNC is separate from PRE/ATT for
the RX ANT on the main RX.

To set this correctly, first do a HOLD on RX ANT button to make sure the
subRX is listening on the AUX RF BNC. You will have to repeat the HOLD if
it already was on AUX RF and you just switched it to MAIN, but you must
check this. Do this BEFORE using B SET. You can't switch this once you
are inside B SET.

Do a HOLD on A/B button. You will see b SET come up on the display. The
PRE/ATT state displayed is now that of the sub RX. TAP/HOLD on the PRE/ATT
button will now set these conditions for the sub RX.

On 160m I always have ATT on the MAIN antenna (TX antenna) and PRE on RX
and AUX RF inputs.

Diversity on the K3 is awesome.

The sub receiver and main are set for:
  PRE is on
 ATT is off

L-MIX-R appears to be unavailable during diversity.
Tuned in signals are heard, but they are very weak when the receive antenna

2012-07-28 Thread Adrian
Guy, well Elecraft said they acknowledge the issue and they will work on
it in the next firmware. When that happens I will pick it up.
Of course with 4.51 you can get perfect copy in perfect conds, but try a
very weak signal or a noisy background and you are doomed.
The cwt threshold point dropped from 8 to 2 with the new firmware
leaving little to work with.
I consider myself pretty good at setting cwt and have trained a few k3
owners in this area to the finer points using RF gain and filter width
to get it near perfect, once the threshold is set.

I have successfully downloaded 4.47 after crashing the radio once
 but came
back according to your input and 4.47 loaded in.

Disconnecting the P3 before K3 power up, after a mcu ld issue is
 required
and I forgot to mention that. Plug P3 supply back after the K3
 firmware has
been completed. Sounds like you were good, but I just remembered that.

Now, I am wondering what settings you have in your rig which
 gives you
really good decode. I am working on that now. I have the AGC
 threshold set
to 8 with the SLP set to 7.

Set SLP to 0. AGC at 8 is good.

I have theTEXT DEC set to threshold of 5 and 30 to 90 wpm.

Yes the 30-90wpm works the best even at slow speeds. I use a
 narrow filter.
Set threshold for clean pulses on the cwt display after spotting
 (centre)
the signal. Then use filter width and/or rf gain to fine tune. I
 get perfect
results most of the time, and using this method on noisy lower
 bands works
 well.
Just check the cwt is pulsing with the cw, then you are close. The
 fine tune
 is reflected in the print.

I just noticed my P3 cursor will not move so have another issue
  HI Check
for tracking mode or disable re-enable svga etc.

 Good Luck

Don,

I am now starting to think that it is an issue with my power connectors that I
am using.

I bought some additional ferrites and put the balun design 1113u in line to
take care of RFI but i know believe that the power connectors are a little
intermittent at times. I don't always get a solid click when inserting into the
back of the K3 or into the power supply line. I like the convenience of those
type of connectors but they do seem to loosen up over time.

Thanks again,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Keith,

The APP connectors do not loosen up over time if they are properly
assembled.

I have repaired 3 KPA100s over the last week that have had APP
connectors improperly assembled. This is an ongoing problem.

If your APP connectors do not fit together and latch in place, it is
likely that you have not assembled them properly. Take a look at the
diagram on page 37 of the XV transverter manual Download from
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/XV%20Transverter%20Owner%27s%20Manual%20Rev%20F.pdf.

Figure 29 is the best description of the proper locking of the APP
blades into the housing.

If you do not have the blades locked into the housing correctly, you
will not have adequate DC power connections and will be complaining
about the APP connectors loosing the connection. If you have problems
of that nature, make certain you have properly assembled the APP connectors.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transmit audio cuts out

2012-07-28 Thread David Bunte
Don -

I have not been following this thread very carefully, but am a bit baffled
by your response to Keith. He talked about not getting a solid click
when plugging the DC cable into the back of the K3... it sounds like you
are talking about the click when inserting the terminal into the APP.

I have NEVER had a click when plugging a power pole into another power
pole, whether on the rear of my K3, or in-line. In fact, the power poles
disconnect from the rear of the K3 with such ease that if I move the rig,
even a little, I OFTEN have to plug the DC back into the rear of the K3.

I thought that perhaps I did not understand what you were telling him, so I
looked at the XV download link you referenced, and cannot find the diagram
to which you make reference.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA Mouse click tune

2012-07-28 Thread David Pratt
That is a good idea, Dale, and I would also find that useful. However, I
doubt it will be possible as the USB connector is used for the keyboard.
Using a USB hub on the P3 would certainly be a challenge for the
designers.

In a recent message, Dale Boresz d...@lightstream.net writes
Any chance that the Keyboard connector on the rear panel of the P3 might
one day support a mouse, offering point and click tune functionality?
(point to the desired signal on the P3 using the mouse/cursor; click the
mouse button; K3 tunes to that frequency; op uses K3 main tuning knob to
tweak the tuning as needed)

My operation is about 95% cw, and click tuning sure would make it easy
to quickly get to a signal at the other end of the current cw band
within the current 'span'. The same benefit would exist for SSB as well.

Re: [Elecraft] UPS has lost my KX3 :-(

2012-07-28 Thread Barry Garratt
You can say that again Wes.

I ordered some equipment from a company in North Carolina and it was picked
up on July 10th. By July 12th it had made it to San Antonio, Texas. It sat
there for 4 days and then arrived in Eagles Pass, Texas on July 16th. It's
still in Eagles pass according to the tracking information. When I call and
ask when it will be delivered they always have some excuse and promise
someone will call me within the hour with a delivery date.

No one ever calls and it's still in Eagles pass as of today which is July
28th. I even sent an email to customer service and unlike Elecraft I'm still
waiting for an answer after 4 days.

UPS is not and never will be my carrier of choice!

Their attitude explains why their trucks are brown though.

Lately UPS has not been very, very good...

I ordered a speaker from a company in Las Vegas, NV; I'm in Tucson.  It was
shipped on July 2 and scheduled for delivery on July 5, according to UPS'
own tracking data.

On the morning of July 5, it was Out for delivery.  Imagine my surprise to
see later in the day, Business was closed, will try again tomorrow.  I'm
not a business but a residence and I was home all day.  I called their 800
number and requested a call from the local office.

When they called, I got profuse apologies for their mistake, promises that
heads would roll and that I would get my shipment the following day
without fail.  If that were the case, I wouldn't be writing.

The next day, according to the tracking info, my business was again
closed... twice.  Another telephone got the same canned response and I'm
sorry, you won't get it until next week.  So my package due on July 5
arrived on July 9.

I could have driven to Vegas for the weekend and picked it up.

Hi,

Since I received my UPS tracking code last week I have been following the
parcel's track through the US, arriving in Germany and then going through
Denmark and Sweden before arriving in Oslo, Norway yesterday. The expected
delivery was next Monday before the end of the day. However, today the
postman arrived with a big parcel from UPS with my name, address and the
correct UPS tracking code for my KX3 shipment. I hurried inside to open the
box and almost had a heart attack. The box is full with clothes. I have got
the wrong box and somebody else has got my KX3, :-(

UPS says there must have been a mix of two or more shipments along the way.
They will send me a new address labels for the box I have received and I
hope they manage to trace the person who has got mine.

A long wait just became even longer.

73's from a sad ham,
