Re: [Elecraft] [POSSIBLE SPAM] Cleaning Solder Flux, Redux

2021-12-31 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
I supervised a Metrology lab at a commercial nuclear power plant for 34 years.
We also performed component level repair to “safety related” equipment. We used
isopropanol applied with a stiff “acid” brush (cut the bristles short). Never
had a problem with NRC audits.
That being said, if you ever work on a board that is humidity sealed (plastic
type coating on solder side), be very careful as the alcohol will loosen the
coating and it will do a number on unsealed potentiometers and switches!

Re: [Elecraft] Absurd remarks about FCC and ARRL notices.

2021-01-18 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
Listen.
This is no place for political BS. I don’t care if you are right, left, or in
the f’ing middle. This is a place to discuss Elecraft equipment, uses,
procedures, and other at least semi- related information. NOT POLITICS. There
are plenty of sites out there on the never ending internet where you can put
down this or the next president and administration.

Dave, I totally agree. I am sure the “problem” the manufacturer is cautioning

My gripe was nothing in the sales literature warned against it. Not till I

[Elecraft] OT: Kidde smoke detectors

2020-10-24 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
Heads up!

Keeping with the suggested 10 year smoke detector replacement, and wanting to
add a couple more and have them all alarm if one alarms, I bought Kidde
wireless interconnected detectors.
Well, start installation, read the manual. Under Locations To Avoid: Near
amateur radios or other devices known to transmit an RF signal.

So, guess I’ll send these back and get some hardwired interconnected units.

Re: [Elecraft] Electrolytic Capacitor failure

2020-04-15 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
I retired in 2016 after 34 years as the metrology supervisor at a commercial
nuclear power plant. I couldn’t count the number of equipment failures due to
electrolytic capacitors, WAY TOO MANY. Some brands of equipment had high
percentage failures while other brands had low. Seems the manufacture of the
CAPACITOR was a better indicator of failure rate. Many equipment manufacturers
used capacitors that carried brands from Japan, others used Sprague (which is
probably made in Japan as well, but seemed to hold up much better). Leakage
current and capacitance value change seemed to be the culprits most of the
time.

For our “standards” we added a step to our calibration procedures to check all
power supply ripple voltages to insure they were in spec.

For all other test equipment, we would do the ripple checks any time the
equipment was in the lab for repair.

Also, the plant itself had preventative maintenance procedures to energize
certain (safety critical) electrolytic capacitors in our warehouse once a year.

Michael,
Do NOT replace the breaker with a larger current breaker UNLESS the wiring is
rated for the extra current.
15A = 14 gage wire
20A = 12 gage wire
30A = 10 gage wire

Thanks all. I did notice the chart in the manual but wasn’t sure if the memory
could hold all of that for all bands/antenna. I’m working on a program to
automate this process (with manual transmit so as not to disturb ongoing
QSO’s), and didn’t want to set up more than the memory would allow.

I understand the tuner holds tune data in memories for quicker tuning when

As a 32 year metrology lab supervisor, we used MANY Fluke DMM models. I can’t

[Elecraft] K3 Utility

2018-03-08 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
Does the utility save any info in Windows registry?

I opened the utility to check for firmware. As soon as I opened it, I received
the “K3 waiting for firmware load.” message.

I was unable to get anywhere using info from the help file, so connected the K3
to another computer and all was FB.

I tried the original computer with the K3 disconnected but got the same error
message.

I have tried everything I can think of to correct the problem with the first
computer: rebooted the computer, uninstalled the utility and reinstalled the
latest utility rev, changed the port the K3 connects to.

My thought is that the utility must save some setting in the Win registry that
doesn’t get cleaned out when uninstalling the utility.

I can keep my K3 up to date using the second computer, but sure would be nice
to be able to use the normal computer.

Any ideas?

No matter how I change bands (k3, KPA front panel switches, or KPA utility), if
I select 20m band, the KPA front panel displays 21.1. If the K3 is turned off,
the KPA responds correctly to front panel switches or utility buttons. I have
reloaded both K3 and KPA firmware to no avail. If I send rf out, the KPA

[Elecraft] AT1 question

2014-06-06 Thread Harlan
It must be my old age setting in but I can't get my head on right.

I have an AT1 attenuator I just finished assembling. My understanding of dB
attenuation must be off.

If I use an input of 1 volt, shouldn't I expect 0.1 volt out if I have selected
20 dB attenuation?

And with 1dB selected, I should be getting 0.8928.but I get 0.9936 with
either 1dB switch selected. YET, all of the resistors are installed
correctly and the suggested resistance checks are all but dead on.

When viewing the schematic, for a 1dB factor, there is a 5.6 ohm in series
with a 910 ohm and the output is across the 910. Using ohm's law It
looks like I should be getting out what I AM getting out.

Confusion has set in... I may need a Corona or two to figure this out

Harlan,

You should get 0.1 volts when you terminate your attentuator with 50 Ohms -

be seen as a 0.2 V voltage source with 50 ohms internal resistance - if you
terminate it with a 50 ohms load, the 0.2 volts are divided between the
internal resistance and the load, but if you use a high z termination instead,
the voltage drop on across the high z is 0.2 volts...

I use Win4K3 as well. It does an excellent job of rig control PLUS it

Anyone using the latest version of HRD - 6.2? Their advertising says there in
K3 and Kx3 support. Can anyone tell me what they have
improved?
I am still running an old 5.xx version that only partially support the K3.
When/if HRD fully supports thatK3 I will immediately
purchase an up-to-date version of HRD.

I only use HRD for rig control, so all the other stuff is just fluff to me.
The older versions, and I am told the more recent
versions also, do not fully support the K3's controls or indications of
control selections.

Any comments?

I don't usually do that because the wire exiting the APP barrel is still
just a small strand that flexes easily and can eventually break. It

What I do is strip the wire the same length as normal, then fold it back
over the insulation. I insert the wire and insulation into the barrel
with the wire down (away from the split in the barrel), then crimp
normally. This makes a solid electrical connection with the stiffness of
the wire insulation which also provides more than adequate strain relief.

I've mentioned it here before and some are aghast, but I have maybe a
dozen connections like that currently in my shack and not one of them
has ever failed in the 10 years I've been doing it with APPs. But any
connection where this is necessary is a low voltage, low current DC
connection so what's it going to hurt? It isn't any worse electrically
than using a small wire nut which is considered safe enough even for
 house wiring.

I wonder if any of you do what I do when using wires are too small for
crimp connectors? I strip twice as much insulation from the end of
the wire and then fold the bare wire over double. May have to squeeze
using small nose pliers to get it doubled tight enough to fit inside
the crimp connector. The crimps hold the undersized wire very well
 with this procedure.

BTW this works for solid conductor wire, like hookup wire. Bend the
conductor double and there is something for the crimp to hold.

I do not know if this will work with powerpole connectors. My problem
was having too large diameter wire for the powerpole connectors which
inhibited proper crimping; solution chose proper size connector for
 the wire size selected.

 Charlie,

The PowerWerx crimper is good. Just be certain to fill the cavity with
wire - for instance the 30 amp connectors are sized for #12 wire - if
the wire is smaller, it may be loose, so in addition to filling the
barrel with as many wire strands as I can, I add some solder for extra
 security.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - new control software

2013-06-26 Thread Harlan
I was a beta tester for this app. Even though it doesn't have all the add on
features like HRD ( sat, dm780, integrated logbook) it DOES have something
more important to me... COMPLETE control of the entire K-line. You can control
the K3, KPA500, KAT500 and even the P3...all from one very easy to use and well
thought out app. AND you can do all this remotely. Sit outside around your pool
and run your complete rig. For those using HRD logging, this app will interface
with the HRD logger.

This is version 1 of the app. I bet we'll see some exciting new ideas show up
in later revs...

The KPA500 turns on the fan momentarily when you use the front panel on/off

Welcome back Tom.

I agree with all the other answers so far. The one thing I would add to these
is... the K3 is an ever evolving radio. As new ideas come along, or
improvements... the great folks at Elecraft update the firmware. You can
download the new version and wala... your radio is as up to date as any radio
available. All for free. Sweet.

My question, can a casual SSB operator mostly interested in talking with ham

I know an answer will not involve electrons but I bet there are some pretty

the programmer guide. So for band one, send SWT11. For band 4, send SWT24.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Programming REQ?

2013-03-24 Thread Harlan
Well Tom. I think you need to add them togetheralong with total k-line
control... K3, KPA500, KAT500, and P3. I have started that project but have
temporarily dogged off to write an app that queries the K3 and sends all Main
and Configuration functions to notepad.

 Gary,

You should not have mic bias set on for that microphone element and
since that is a low output element, the mic gain range should be set
 to
high (FP.H. if you are connecting to the Front panel jack, otherwise
 RP.H).

To set up the mic gain, put the K3 into TX TEST and initially set
 the
mic compression to zero. Then adjust the mic gain to produce 5 to 7
bars on the ALC display. After than, set the compression as you
 desire
(listening with headphones to the monitor may help you determine the
 correct setting).

You may try doing the Reference Oscillator calibration. Strange and
unrelated as it may seem, I have seen that clean up distorted SSB
 signals.
