Re: [Elecraft] K3 Voltage on TX
Rich, The first K3 I owned always showed a large voltage drop on TX that was pretty much incurable (as well as other issues), much to my (and others) consternation. I tried (In no particular order) Heavy gauge power cables, No fuses, Upping the power supply voltage, Re soldering the 30 Amp Anderson plugs on the power cable [s] and numerous different power leads, all to no avail. So, I learnt to live with it sort of. (The issue was always in the back of my mind however.) After some time though, financial circumstances forced me to sell my beloved K - Line. The new owner of the K3 also had concerns about the voltage drop, but, as he knew that I had already tried all the common things listed above he gave the radio the 'once over'. imagine his surprise when he discovered that there was NO SOLDER AT ALL on the Anderson Plug leads where they connect to the mainboard of the radio! So, he soldered the connections and as a result, that K3 now works perfectly all the time and with minimal voltage drop. (Which is probably just as well as the owner is a gold miner and lives in bush camps in Tropical Far North Queensland, Australia using nothing but solar power and batteries.) So, it may just be an idea to open the radio and check the solder joints in and around the Anderson Plugs, you never know, your rig may have a dry joint there too. (And yes, I still own a K3, they ARE the best Amateur Radio transceiver on the planet after all) :) 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA (Ex VK4BOF, VK4VHF) Proud owner of Elecraft K3 #4767 Folks, I am not sure if I have some sort of issues or not. My K3 shows 13.7VDC on RX. When I TX that reading drops to 10.9VDC. Is that a normal drop? Re: [Elecraft] normal K3 voltage drop on TX
What would be a normal value on the FP voltage display when tx at 100W, using factory fused cables? No sub installed. PS is Astron VS-35M linear, voltage set at 13.9 idling per FP display. drops to 11.1 on TX. Current varies but up to 15.5A indicated. Specs call for 17-22A tx @100W. I suspect bad pass transistor and/or high drop over fuses, but want to establish normal indication for tx drop. 11.1v seems way out. tnx in advance -- de AB1VL NAQCC #6799 ab1vl.com I know it's a late reply but I too experienced similar (large) voltage drops with my first K3. (Serial number in the 4000's and with all options but the KRX3) It turns out it had dry joints on the main power input connectors on its motherboard. (In fact, It had NO SOLDER AT ALL on the connections between the Anderson plugs and the motherboard.) They were found by its second owner when they investigated the low voltage issues. Re: [Elecraft] Remote KAT500
Fred, Wouldn't it be easier to just buy something like one of MFJ's remote tuners that are built exactly for the job you want your KAT500 to do? If I had a KAT500, I don't think I'd want my $700 Elecraft auto tuner left outside, where it was never meant to be. (Even if it was in a sealed, water-proof container). (And yes, I use a MFJ remote ATU for my portable Vertical.) Jeff C. VK4XA k6dgw wrote I'd like to hear from anyone who has remoted a KAT500 out to the base of a vertical. We're moving to an HOA community. The HOA appears to be quite benign and benevolent, I'm planning on a flag pole [with a flag on good wx days] in the backyard, with an insulator at the bottom where I'd like to remote my KAT500 in a wx-proof box. I'll probably power it through the same conduit that carries the coax. It would not be connected to the K3 of course. I'd like to run it in MAN mode as I do now. If I start in AUTO and step through all the band segments, will it learn the settings, and just recall them as soon as it senses RF? 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 50th Running of the Cal QSO Party 3-4 Oct 2015 - www.cqp.org - Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA Innisfail, QLD, Australia. Re: [Elecraft] Power Pole connectors
I had numerous issues with APP's and my original, factory built K3. It had issues with severe voltage drop, heating APP connectors, low power output and DC power outages. I lost count how many times I was told to and did replace the APP's on my power cable. (And it was factory made to start with!) It was finally sorted by it's new owner after I got so pissed off with the damned thing. The cause was dry solder joints (to the point where the solder was pretty much non existent I'm told) on the K3's motherboard at the APP's mounting point. I am not convinced that the sub 45 Amp APP's connections are very good mechanically unless you use the roll pin, which kinda defeats the one main advantage of APP's, their quick release capabilities. So, I am still not a fan of the 45Amp and smaller APP's but the 50Amp APP's and their clones get a lot of use here and in my motorhome as they do connect solidly but still allow disconnection when you want. - Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA Innisfail, QLD, Australia. [Elecraft] K3 Powerpole Replacement
Hi everyone, Has anyone on the list replaced the Anderson powerpoles on their K3's with something else? (Something like the 4 pin plugs and sockets that are fitted to most current YaeComWoods I guess) Why do I want to replace them you ask? Well, because my K3 gets around and more often than not sits on a wobbly table whilst I'm out in the scrub or occasionally even sits in my lap whilst I'm operating. The powerpoles has once again raised their ugly heads and keep disconnecting or not making proper contact and I'm fed up with them. Mounting it internally is the way to go and I reckon a combo pre-amp would sit nicely where the internal 2M transverter normally goes. Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA Gary Gregory-2 wrote Well I do hope there will be a version for 10M perhaps that will install within the K3. Much as it would be nice to have I am not going to buy more boxes needing to be plugged in, cabled or whatever. Whilst I understand some folks have space available and can wire in as many boxes as are available, those of us who operate portable tire very quickly of sorting cables, boxes and the resultant tangled leads. I guess I will have to wait and see what is produced but another external box such as the 6M pre-amp which protrudes too far and can easily be knocked around is a non starter for me no matter that I could use it, it is what it is, a box too far. [Elecraft] [K3] FS - 2.1KHz 250Hz 8 Pole Filters
Hi, As the topic says, I have 2 8 pole filters available for sale, they are 1 x KFL3A-2.1K and 1 x KFL3A-250 The price is US$125.00 or AU$120.00 each. I would consider a swap of one of the above filters for a KFL3A-6K favourably. If the purchaser resides in VK, the US or the UK I will include shipping at that price. Re: [Elecraft] Mobile KM1
*How about an Elecraft mobile with remote head with coverage HF, 6, 2 and 70cm with 100W output on HF - 6M and 50W on 2M and 40W on 70cm? The current offerings are of questionable quality and performance but many operators own these types of radios for mobile and or backup shack transceivers etc. International sales would be good I should imagine given the issues with the current crop of available offerings from the opposition. Whilst the KX3 can fit this market, it really is not an all band, all mode ideal mobile transceiver. 73's Gary OMG, I am so there! A shack in the box (ala FT847) made by Elecraft would be my dream rig. Bruce, From your description it seems to me that whilst the resolution is correct for your monitor, the refresh rate is not. This is indicated by the image being offset to one side as you describe. Hi Bill, My K3 #4257 had the 13KHz 8 pole, the 6KHz 8 pole, the 2.8KHz 8 Pole filter + the 2.1KHz 8 pole originally, the 400Hz 8 pole CW filter. I swapped my 400Hz CW filter for the 1.8KHz 8 pole SSB filter I have now with a fellow Elecraft owner here on the list. Once I got it, I found that I was using the 1.8KHz filter more than the 2.1 for both contesting and rag chewing to the point where now I have removed the 2.1KHz filter due to non use. Hi John, What about using a 7805 regulator to drop the 12V to 5V? I'm sure that you could do the job with one of those and maybe a coupla small caps for bypassing. Heatsinking, if any would need to be minimal for the regulator. And no noise issues, if the bypassing is done right. My son n8fyk, who teaches radio astronomy, has set up a project with his students. They are using a 15m direct-conversion Radio Jove receiver in the field to monitor radio emissions from Jupiter, the sun, and the galaxy. The receiver operates from 12V, which is readily supplied by a portable utility 12V battery pack. Their problem is powering their data recorder, which needs about 5V at 0.7A. The data recorder is designed to operate from three internal AA alkaline cells, but these give a limited run time. My son would like to be able to leave the receiver and recorder for unattended operation for several days at a time. One solution would be to use a 12V-to-5V power converter between the 12V battery and the data recorder. For long battery life, it would be nice to have the efficiency of a switching converter. Such a converter would have to be RF-quiet, so as not to interfere with their weak-signal reception. I will be interested to hear what list members recommend. Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output
Hi everyone, Some people here seem to be losing sight (pun intended) of one of the reasons for Elecraft offering and people buying the SVGA adaptor, that is so that those people with poor eyesight can see the P3's display which due to their eyesight can be rather difficult to see in waterfall mode. (Monochrome mode will help a little) I am one of those poorly sighted people and I can tell you that whilst all my computer monitors here are LCD flat panels with a native resolution of 1440x900 (or significantly better) I operate every single one of them at 1024 x 768 (even on the widescreen monitors), simply because that is the smallest that I can see unaided with any reliability. A lot of people are in the same boat I believe. My eye condition cannot be corrected by laser, spectacles or contacts, I just have to live with my failing eyesight until I get new corneal grafts which will give me another 5 to 10 years of sight. (At least I can go back under the knife a few times to extend my 'sighted' time which is some small comfort.) I am looking forward to the availabilty of the SVGA adaptor but please Eric, keep the 1024 x 768 resolution available. (Dare I ask for 800 x 600 too for when my eyes have just about 'croaked'?) :-) 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF East Innisfail QLD, Australia K3 #4257, P3#1629, KPA-500 #161 - Original Message - From: iain macdonnell - N6ML a...@dseven.org To: j...@audiosystemsgroup.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 8:32 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output On Mon, Dec 19, 2011 at 1:48 PM, Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com wrote: On 12/19/2011 1:21 PM, Doug Person wrote: Very few monitors in use today (for web-browsing) can accommodate 1024 x 768 as a native mode. We've actually been using the current black oxide steel type of screw for the external screws since we started the company with the K2. These are the same type of screw used by Alpha amps and a number of other ham manufacturers.( I just got off the phone earlier today with Alpha confirming this.) While receiving occasional reports of rust from tropical and extremely humid areas, most users have not reported any problems. As an example, I live 1 mile from the ocean here in CA, and the screws on my 12+ year old K2, my K3, KX1, K1 etc are all pristine. We created the K3 SS screwkit for the K3 as a special kit for dxpeditioners etc who were operating in extreme conditions. It consists of all of the exterior screws on the K3 (not just the 4-40 x 3/16 screws) and was bought by us in low volumes, hence the higher price. We're probably breaking even on these after kitting, order entry etc. We're certainly not getting rich selling the SS screw kits. :-) Also, the rust seen on extreme dxpeditions was restricted just to the exterior screws. We haven't seen any serious corrosion with the interior screws. That said, the screw corrosion thread here has prompted us to revisit this and to look at phasing in SS screws across the whole product line. It is certainly happening in more cases than we, our you, would like to see. We are actively looking at sources right now and I'll report back to the list as we get something defined, both for new kits and for mod kits to existing rigs. This is a pretty big project to change it all over. We'll make sure to keep the cost on the SS screw mod kits very low. Our goal is to make sure there is nothing standing in the way of the K2, and or other products, being perceived as high quality products. Also, in the near term, we'll replace any of the existing exterior screws with the same type at no cost for corrosion. C238, on the bottom of the RF board near the front, sets this time constant. We did a little experiment today (thanks to Tree, N6TR) that suggests increasing the size of C238 substantially might be a worthy change. In the case of signals just large enough to tickle the hardware AGC, the first IMD products were reduced by something like 18 dB. This will also increase the recovery time for very strong signals, so the jury is out on whether this is OK for the average user. For the experimentally inclined: C238 is easy to get to; just remove bottom cover A (the front half). C238 is a large-ish surface mount capacitor nestled between two 20-pin connectors. The present value is 0.1 uF. Tree tacked a 1-uF cap on top of it. Then he tacked another one on, which improved things by another few dB. Some ops have mentioned problems with signals much lower than this, which has always baffled me. But I got to thinking: Suppose you're listening to a bunch of S4-S5 signals in your DSP passband. You could have larger signals outside the DSP, but inside the crystal filter. Or you could have clicks from strong signals that get inside the crystal filter but you can't hear because you're using a narrow DSP filter. Or you could have noise spikes. Any of these could ping the hardware AGC just enough to cause IMD between all of the signals in the passband. My point is that increasing the loop time constant could have a more general benefit when a band is busy and/or noisy. Let me know if you try this and whether the results are of interest. (I live in an RF-free zone, it seems, so I can never recreate the problem here. [Elecraft] VK4XQA 160/80M Operation - An update
Hi everyone, This is just a reminder of our up and coming VK4XQA operation on 160M 80M that is scheduled for 19/20/21 November 2011 from Euramo, QLD, Australia. All systems are go here, the antenna is ready, the rigs and amplifiers are ready, now we wait until we can all congregate at the site at the end of the week. The site is at Euramo (Grid Square QH22XA for those that need to know) in North Queensland, Australia. The antenna we will be using is a yet to be commisioned commercial AM broadcast band top loaded vertical antenna that is resonant at 693KHz and it is 60M tall. (Yep, that's over 200 feet!) It is sitting on top of a 5+ Acre ground mat and our time there has been graciously approved by the sites owners Coastal Broadcasters (AKA, Innisfail AM broadcast Radio Station 4KZ) The original commercial tower on this site was destroyed by cyclone YASI and we will be using the brand new replacement antenna even before the owners get too! Our operation times and frequencies will be fairly flexible with operation mainly during our nights here and with prime consideration being given to top band operations. Top Band Operations: We will have one operator (John - VK4TL) who will be our designated CW operator and who will be operating in the CW section of the band, somewhere around 1820KHz. Our SSB operators will be myself, Jeff - VK4BOF and Gary - VK4FD (who may also grace us with his CW skills), Chris VK4YCG will also be operating on occasion, mainly on AM for the old time operators out there. Grin SSB and AM operations will be on or about 1845KHz though we can go lower for those of you out there that are not permitted operations in that section of the band. These frequencies comply with the suggested band plan here in Australia and also seem to be ok for IARU region's 1 2 as well. Please bare in mind that we will only be operating with ONE RADIO at a time, therefore we cannot devote all our time to just CW or just to the AM/SSB side of it, we must share it aound amongst all modes and operators. 80M band Operations: Please be aware that our 80M band operations are secondary to our 160M band efforts. SSB CW Operation on 80M will be within the frequency range of 3779KHz to 3799KHz. (AKA, the 'DX Window' here in Australia.) We *may* operate at a lower frequency (ie: between 3500 3700KHz) but it will be a much lower priority. In fact our whole 80M band activation is going to be of a lower priority for us, we are mainly going to be on-site for 160M band operations. 40M and higher bands Operation on these bands is unscheduled however, we may try out the antenna system on these bands on Thursday (18/11/2011) afternoon evening local time however operation on these bands is not guaranteed. Rigs Power Output Power output on all modes and frequencies will be the Australian legal limit for the appropriate mode. The rig will be an Elecraft K3 and the amplifier will be an Elecraft KPA500. An Elecraft P3 Panadaptor will also be in use to see the activity around us on the bands. A short note on our callsign, VK4XQA. In 1914 a man by the name of Marcus Brims applied for and received the first experimental radio licence in Queensland, Australia. Marcus lived in the township of Mareeba in Far North Queensland and he was interested in and got a licence for operations for frequencies not too far removed from the present 160m band and we thought that to honour him and his pioneering work we should get and use the modern equivalant of his original callsign for this 160M operation. His callsign? Why XQA of course. (Meaning X for Experimental, Q for Queensland A being the first licence issued.) Our club (T.R.E.C.) has assisted some of its members to help cosmetically restore Marcus' original Spark Gap transmitter and it now has pride of place at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Further information on the XQA exhibit is here: http://treclub.org.au/index_htm_files/TREC%20NEWS%20June%202011%20Vol%204%20-%206.pdf The Mareeba Heritage Centre has a website here: http://www.mareebaheritagecentre.com.au/index.htm We as a club are all looking forward to our little 'DXpedition' as this whole 'Top Band' thing is a new one for all of us. On 10M, I get 710Watts output at max power into a dummy load. (As if I would ever break our laws and use that much power on air!) All other bands I get an easy 650Watts output. Is the maximum output the same on all modes (CW/AM/FM etc.)? Yes it is. Is the maximum output the same on all bands (what happens on 30 meters)? Yes it is, you will have to set your radios drive level to achieve the maximum power output permitted. In the event of a high SWR, does the output begin to drop progressively, and/or does it just stop at some point? What is the typical SWR that will keep it happy at full output (without getting into a discussion of resonance and actual power out the antenna)? 2:1 is the cutoff point, before that, the amp will offer maximum power output. Finally, I read about the duty cycle of 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off, and I still wonder how it would keep it up with modes such as WSJT, where there is typically 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off? WSJT is I believe a low power mode, why would you even consider using a 500+Watt amp in this mode? Having said that, the amp will alter its cooling fan speed to suit its needs, if it gets too hot it will tell you and take itself out of circuit before anything gets harmed in it. 73 de Sebastian, W4AS __ 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF East Innisfail QLD, Australia K3 #4257, P3#1629, KPA-500 #161 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K144XV-K 2-meter 10 watt module kit Questions
Hi Phil, My K3 #4257 has the 2m module installed and I think I can answer most of your questions for you. 1. Emphatically yes, the K3 + K144XV combination is excellent for weak signal work. (But, you MUST get at least the K144RFLK and possibly get the KTCX03-1 to give you the frequency stability you need) 2.Yes, it is a vague question but I think I know what your getting at, the answer is directly related to answer 1. All the K3's features translate to the 2M band and I don't think that you'll find anything missing. 3. Nothing to see here folks. 4. Yes, all modes including RTTY, PSK31 etc are available with the k144XV. (If the K3 can do it on HF, it can do it on 2m.) 5. Yes it does, all filters currently installed in your K3 will be available on 2M. 6. Yes, I use a Mirage 1016G 160Watt amplifier with my K3 on 2M and with 2 Watts of drive I get 150Watts of power output. No gotchas that I know of, save for the fact that the Mirage can be a little 'dirty' if I drive it with more than 2Watts but thats not a fault in the K3, thats an issue with the amplifier. I use my 2m module for both SSB and FM repeater work and it performs equally well on both. (I was amazed at the SSB sensitivity to be honest, it was a real eye opener) I hope this helps, 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF East Innisfail QLD, Australia K3 #4257, P3#1629, KPA-500 #161 - Original Message - From: Phil Hystad To: Elecraft Reflector Sent: Wednesday, November 09, 2011 12:51 PM Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] K144XV-K 2-meter 10 watt module kit Questions Regarding the K144XV-K 2-meter 10 watt module kit, I have a few questions: (1) Does the excellent RX performance of the K3 translate into the 2-meter band. I mean, would this option be a great weak signal 2 meter performer? (2) I am thinking of using weak signal only, SSB and CW and probably mostly CW. Are all the features of the K3 translated to the 2-meter range. For example, break-in keying? Is there anything that I would find missing? I know, vague question. (4) From reading the short spec (data sheet) brochure, it looks like the only modes mentioned are SSB, CW, and FM. Are any other modes supported such as digital modes like PSK31 or RTTY? (5) Does the K144XV-K share the same IF frequency and therefore the same filters I already have in my K3? (if this is a dumb question I plead total ignorance of how this module fits into the K3). (6) Does anyone use an external amplifier, maybe something like a THP HL-350Vdx or others of similar ilk? Any gotchas in this configuration? Actually, I can see some merit in the OP's request. What if you are (heaven forbid) using the KPA500 with another brand radio? For SSB I would look at the 8 pole 1.8KHz filter, it seems to be just about perfect for SSB in my experience but if you are going to be using CW mostly then leave the 8 pole 1.8KHz filter off of your list. Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.
G'day! I use 6 x 2.2V, 250AH Gel Cells in parallel with my 30A linear power supply to run my K3. The battery sets float voltage happens to be 13.8V so all is good. I have another set of gelcells here which runs my 150W output 2m linear amplifier and which is floated by a separate power supply. I also have 2 x 12V deep cycle wet cell batteries here but they are used more for portable ops as they are considerably lighter than the gelcells. (The gelcells weigh about 23Kg each!) I don't use or need diodes anywhere to be able to run this setup. 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF Elecraft K3 #4257 + PR6 + K144XV + KPA500 #161 = Fanbloodytastic performance! - Original Message - From: kf4clo kf4...@hotmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 8:12 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV output power range
Stan et al, My K144XV gives me from 1.5 to 10.5 watts from 0.1 to 1.0 mW of drive. Although my K3 was factory setup with up to 1.5mW of drive available for the txvtr, I have found no benefit to exceeding 1.0mW of drive so I have setup the XV1 PWR output accordingly. It was designed and marketed primarily for satellite work, but became very popular among VHF-UHF contesters. In fact, I know of quite few who still use it, but they are looking for alternatives, since the '736 is becoming unreliable with age. The FT-736r had internal slot for four band-specific modules (transverters); the owner could mix and match among 6 meter, 2 meter, 220, 440, and 1296 mhz SSB. The modules were rated for 25 watts output through 220 mHz and 20 watts on 440 and above. Its receiver was not very impressive compared with what you can get with a K3 and transverters, but those who own it love it. Given the physical size and relatively high running temp of existing Elecraft transverters, my guess is that they'd have to be redesigned for slightly less power output to fit within the K3 case on a K3-based motherboard. But 16 watts out from a transverter module into an amplifier with 15 db gain would yield 500 watts out, and that's plenty for the uses such a rig would be put to. Marry a K4 to a purpose-built VHF/UHF amplifier (akin to the KPA-500) and you would have a killer rig for VHF-UHF contesting. As for price, take a look at the eHam reviews of the FT-736r. The basic unit sells today for more than $500, even though decades old, and the scarce 222 mhz and 1296 mHz modules sometimes fetch $1,000 on eBay. People who are into satellite work and VHF/UHF contesting would fight for a place in line to buy such a rig, and for many it would be a bargain compared with trying to set up a complete FT-736r. If space allowed, five bands would be even better, but since most VHF/UHF contesters use a separate rig for 6 meters anyway, you could get by with four, covering 2m, 1.25 m, 70 cm, and 23 cm bands. You can easily spend $3k or $4k to put together a comparably equipped FT-736, which suggests that the market would accept a price of up to $5k for a new and very high-quality rig such as the hypothetical K4. And it absolutely would not pirate sales from the K3, although it would put a dent in sales of transverters. Please don't think that's a reason for not producing such a radio. If Elecraft followed that philosophy we'd not have the K3 or KX3. I would sell my car and walk 25 miles to work to get a K4. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports
Personally, I think that we need a reality check here people. Let's face it, what we 'want' and what we 'need' are two sometimes vastly different things. Wanting to be able to switch up to 18 antennas is so far outside the realms of sanity to try to implement in an antenna tuner it's ridiculous. Let's get back to basics, I am told that the KAT500 tuner will most likely be available in two formats, one a desktop unit and one a remote unit. In either format I think that it should have not more than 2 inputs, 3 unbalanced and one balanced output and that the tuner should be capable of matching a 10:1 VSWR load. (As compared to 50 ohms) Those are the basic requirements IMHO. Now, on to packaging. The desktop unit should be as small as possible but I personally don't think that 'P3 size' will be big enough due to the high voltages that can (and do) develop in the tuner, in a P3 sized case there would exist the real possibility of flashover with disastrous results for the tuner and / or amplifier / rig. I envisage something of similar size (for the desktop units at least) to a K3 if anything. This will give more than enough space for the tuner plus the associated switching needs to select the different antennae. The remote unit will no doubt be smaller due to not needing a capability of local human interaction and will probably have only one input. As well the remote unit will need waterproofing to IP65 or better. Functionality: I envisage that the desktop unit shall be not only able to select between the 2 rig inputs 3 antenna outlets but can do so according to the band that the radio (I am assuming that an Elecraft K3 or least a K2 will be used with it.) is on and do so automagically via AUXBUS control. If the transceiver used is not an Elecraft rig (Shame on you!) then possibly the tuner should have some sort of RF sensing capabilities, ala KPA500. I also envisage that the remote unit will have to rely on RF sensing alone, due to the possible distances involved between it and the transceiver / amplifier unless some type of data bus capability is installed that is capable of operating over the long distances (10 to 100 metres or more) that is also compatible with the K2/K3/KRC2 etc. Failing that maybe a serial interface could be used but that would mean that level convertors and logic decoders would have to be used at either end, thereby complicating things even more. (And not to mention, adding extra cost to the units) Whatever the good folk at Elecraft come up with I don't mind betting that it's gunna be awesome, just like the rest of their gear! :) 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF Elecraft K3 # 4257 + K144XV + KPA500 + PR6 = Fanbloodytasic performance! - Original Message - From: Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft To: Brendan Minish Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2011 10:01 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports Why not just use two KRC2s? These would be driven by the auxbus data that will presumably be fed to the KANT500 and decoded by it's CPU anyway. An input (per antenna port) that can be used to indicate to the KAT500 that the requested antenna is not available might also be a good idea so that the KRC500 can then select the second choice on the other port (complete with recalling the last used tunings for the secondary ) would also be nice. Think of this as the functionality of (2x ?) KRC2's built in and it would make for superb versatility since the KRC500 could then be configured to automate pretty much any external automatic antenna switching arrangement. I don't know if this is practical to fit into the box but it sure would be nice. The KRC2 may already form the basis for much of the required circuitry/firmware. The Sink/source outputs could be selected sink/source by internal jumper and the output could be on DB15 or DIN connectors to minimise rear panel real estate. (perhaps with pre-made breakout cable supplied ) Another option might be to have the 'Glue' internal to the KPA500 and the Sink/source drivers in a 'dongle' to conserve internal space and provide for easier breakout

[Elecraft] OT Linux for Elecraft K3 use - Which Distribution to use?
Hi everyone, I would like some advice please, from the Linux / Wine users amongst us. Question: Which Linux distribution to use and why? My reason for asking is the impending demise in support for Win XP from Microsoft and my lack of trust in Windows 7 (Or any other version of Windows for that matter) to do what I want, when I want it to. :-) I have some experience with Linux and Unix both (From operating an IRLP node + other stuff earlier on in my career) but with so many distributions available nowadays, it's a bit daunting. What I want to be able to do is to run a logging program, update control my K3 and do other general around the shack work. The computers are not what you would call 'powerhouses', they are an Intel 466MHz Celeron powered Toshiba laptop an Intel Atom powered netbook. Hopefully I can get some useful advice on the list from those of you in the know Thanks to all in advance for your replies, Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Thermal Stress in K2, K3 and I guess KX3
Hi John, I have a 100W K3 here and my shack is an un air conditioned 20Ft container in tropical north Queensland, Australia. Needless to say, it does tend to get a trifle 'warm' in the wet (summer) season here, with outside temps in the mid to high 30's (Celcius). Internal temps in the container can be as high as 60 degrees with all the windows / doors cloased up. (The radio is not generally operating when temps are that high) I have only ever twice had my K3 shutdown due to over temp, in both cases the shack temp was well over 40 degrees C.. (And closer to 50!) The first time was the internal 2M module shutting down, the second was the main VCO. The K144XV shutdown was cured by updating the firmware to the then latest version, (1.02 I think it was at the time) which increased the shutdown temperature and the second was apparently cured by recalibrating the main VCO. Neither issue has ever come back to haunt me and my K3 does get subjected to some extremely high temperatures due to my living and being portable in the tropics. Never once has my K3 drifted in frequency to any noticable extent though I do have the TCXO option. (In fact, my K3 #4257 is almost fully optioned, it is only missing the second receiver and its associated filters.) In both shutdown cases, my FP temp was over 60 degrees C as indicated by the radios display. 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF Innisfail, QLD, Australia Elecraft K3 #4257 + KPA500 + PR6 + K144XV = Multiband greatness! - Original Message - From: John To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 31, 2011 8:10 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Thermal Stress in K2, K3 and I guess KX3 All, Has anyone seen any degradation or temporary non-operation in the QRP versions of the K2 or K3 while operating in hot conditions? Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Powerpole voltage loss
Further info: This is the second time I have mentioned / bitched / whinged about this issue in this list and I have finally found the problem, read on. After a year of looking (and bitching) about my voltage drop issues, in sheer desperation I took a look at the K3's connectors and finally solved the riddle of my missing volts! (And it was volts at one stage, on a 20A load current I would see a 1.5 to 2 volt drop @ 13.8V - 20Amp current draw indicated by the radio!) The original voltage drops mentioned above were seen with the factory built power lead and radio right from when I got the K3 in May / June 2010. At that time they were just dismissed as being an anomaly in the rigs own measurement capabilities or a problem with the power supply but on checking the power supply and finding it to be in good health, measuring the actual voltage drop and then speaking with other K3 owners I realised that there was an issue somewhere. The original lead was ditched not long after I was made aware the voltage drops were too high and the current (pun intended) power lead for the radio is a newly self made 6mm dual core cable fitted with soldered 30A Anderson Powerpoles at one end with soldered 4mm lugs at the other end to suit my power supply. The new power cable is approximately 36 (1 Metre) long. (I don't believe in or use crimped connections as a rule) This improved things to the point where I was seeing a voltage drop of generally around 1.2Volts at 13.8V - 20A current draw. (A useful improvement over the 2 volt drop I had seen before) :-) I put up with this loss for some time but I finally got around to looking harder at the issue last night. Upon further investigation I found that the problem was with the connectors that are fitted to the K3's motherboard, which is what had me flummoxed, the rig is just on a year old and I didn't even think to consider that the onboard connectors could be dodgy for one minute. (Just goes to show you, never discount anything unless you test it!) Once the contacts were cleaned (First by cleaning with a cotton bud dipped in thinners and then when that didn't work by scraping the contacts in the radios connector with a small screwdriver then burnishing with a small file) the voltage drop has been within 0.2 - 0.3V @ 4A current draw and *0.5 - 0.6V at 20A draw. (That is a 28MHz 100W FM carrier into a 1.0:1 VSWR dummy load). * (All voltage drops shown here are measured at 13.8V supply voltage and are as shown by the rig itself, the measurements shown are in fact a little higher than they actually are due to internal voltage drops etc in the K3.) Now I realise that according to Anderson the connectors are supposed to be self cleaning, but my experience so far with them has demonstrated otherwise. In that case it may be wise to check the connectors fitted to your rig / cable occasionally, I 'sure as sh1t' will be from now on. (Until I ditch them all) Of course, none of all the above raises my opinion of Anderson PowerPoles one iota, I don't believe that they are a particularly good idea, especially for a radio that is designed to be in used more in a portable situation far more than any other radio and given the hassles I have had with the damned things, if I could I would gladly ditch then from the back of my K3 in an instant. What would I use in their place? A pair of 6mm wires, permanently soldered to the motherboard and fitted with a strain relief, voltage drop problems solved! 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF Innisfail, QLD, Australia Elecraft K3 #4257 + KPA500 + PR6 + K144XV = Multiband greatness! - Original Message - From: David Ferrington, M0XDF To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, May 18, 2011 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Powerpole voltage loss I have never found dirty APPs - the whole idea is that they wipe each other as joined and unjoined. You lot are all fairly lucky that you can even get a response from your regulator. Here in Australia our wonderful regulator ACMA (Australian Communications Media Authority) does 3/5's of bugger all with almost everything to do with Amateur Radio, except for holding out their greedy little hands for the $64.00 a year that we have to pay in licence fees. I've had a complaint in with them now for almost 2 years about my various neighbours plasma TV's that has STILL not been actioned. The interference was so bad here that it used to cream the front of my FT847 big time, at least now that I have the K3 it is 'bareable' but for the most part nowadays it isnt a problem, most of the people have upgraded to LCD's with the exception of one couple, who are empty nesters and are rarely home to watch TV nowadays. But, remember the golden rule of interference: If no one complains, it's not interference.Unless you raise an official complaint, you have no one but ourself to complain to. One thing that works almost every time is this correct statement: Your TV is not supposed to radiate interference, but it clearly is. It certainly is not supposed to transmit signals. That means it is defective somehow. I have no idea what the defect could be but, your TV _is_ an electrical device, and if it is defective who knows what could happen. I hope it doesn't cause a fire! Not a single station was listenable. I could hear the buzz all the way up to 10 meters. It only took me a few minutes to determine that it was coming from my neighbor's house. I informed him the next day. Lucky for me, he is the type of guy who can't stand the idea that a brand-new device of his is causing pollution-- he saw it as a defect. And, of course, his own AM radios were affected, too. He had a Panasonic tech out there in a couple of days. I don't know what the tech did, but he managed to reduce the noise by about 10 dB though he never eliminated it entirely. I've had to live with it ever since. Re: [Elecraft] K3 vs RigExperts SWR meter issue
Hi Alexander, I see this a lot with my K3. The truth is that the KAT3 is never really out of circuit. The trick is to enable the KAT3 (Hold ATU Tune), use it to show a low VSWR to the rigs finals, then disable it (Hold ATU TUNE) again. You will then find that the VSWR will presented to the rig will be correct as per the analyser. I don't why the KAT3 still appears to be in circuit when supposedly switched out but at least there is a workaround. 73 de Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF Innisfail, QLD, Australia Elecraft K3 #4257 + KPA500 + PR6 + K144XV = Multiband greatness! - Original Message - From: Alexander Sack To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 1:51 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 vs RigExperts SWR meter issue Hello: I just bought an AA-54 RigExperts analyzer. I don’t have a feel for dBuV, so are the levels shown a concern? I can’t see any plots for radiated emissions. 3. [Elecraft] K3 - Receiver desense?
Hi everyone, I have an interesting phenomenon happen yesterday whilst operating on 15M mobile/portable with my K3. Here's some background info first. The vehicle is a Nissan D21 series Navara of 1991 vintage. It has a brand new alternator, battery kettering type ignition systems and whilst old and high milage (570,000Klm), still runs like clockwork. (The vehicle does not have a computer onboard as it does not have EFI, ABS or electronic ignition) The K3 is serial #4257 and is up to date with all firmware,. mods etc. (Firmware 4.31 in fact) The issue: Whilst parked up in the car and with the K3 running on 15M during CQ WW SSB I noticed that the display lights were flickering alot on TX, indicating to me that maybe it was time to start the engine to increase voltage to the rig. Received sigz at the time were plentiful (crowded) and loud, the band was wide open. So, I started the engine and all sigz but for a couple of what used to be loud signals had disappeared! The really loud sigz I had heard before were considerably reduced in volume and signal strength. I checked the NB and NR settings and found that both noise blankers were both turned off as was noise reduction off. I tried both NB's and neither were of any use. There was no type of noise heard on the radio at all apart from the usual (low down) band noise. All the above was noted when I was using the cars own battery / power system. I shut down the engine and all sigz came back to normal. As I had an extra truck battery in the tray of my vehicle (I had been out of a field day with Gary VK4FD and others) I decided to try that in the same scenario. So, I shut down the engine and the radio and transfered the radio power leads to the external truck battery. No problems were noted at all. All sigz on 15M were loud and no issues were noted even if the engine was running. Now, can anyone explain it? Very little ignition noise was noted in the receiver and it could be removed by setting the DSP NB to 5-1, the IF NB was not effective at all in removing the noise so it was left turned off, which is where I have always had it set to. [Elecraft] K3 - Bug in firmware found?
Hi everyone, Recently, Gary VK4FD and I were participating in the John Moyle Field Day here in Nth QLD. (It was on at the same time as CQ WW SSB) As we were just 2 of 5 operators in the club station (VK4WAT) we decided to lock down our K3's so that the yaecomwood drivers would be able to use the K3's. Each K3 was locked down so that it was a single band radio, mine on 40M and Gary's on 20M. That's when we noticed the possible problem. You can lock out all but one band in firmware but the radio will still change bands! On my radio, I had all bands but 40M locked out, yet it could still be changed to (And it was fully operational on) 20M and 80M even though those bands were locked out. The behaviour on 20M is noted in brackets. Try the following: Config: Band Map Turn off all bands but 40M. (20M) Exit Config menu: From 40M band. (20M) Press Band UP Rig changes to 80M. (40M) Press Band Up again. Rig changes back to 40M (20M) From 40M band: Press Band Down Rig changes to 20M. (15M) Press Band Down again Rig changes back to 40M (20M) Note that at no time does the rig change to one of the so called WARC bands in these 2 tests. However, if the test is done with the rig only having 30M enabled, then shifts to 5MHz and 17M occur. As my rig has the 2M internal transverter I have also tried that band with the following results: 2M band enabled, all others locked out. BND UP selects 10M BND DWN selects 80M The behaviour is similar on all bands when only one band is enabled. In each rig we also tried with 2 bands unlocked and each rig performed as it should with all bands but the 2 selected for operation being locked out and unable to be used. So it appears that this issue occurs only when all but one band is locked out. This has been checked on both my K3 (Serial #4257) and Gary VK4FD's K3 (Serial #679) with the same results. Gary's firmware revision at the time was v 4.25, mine was v 4.30 and although I now have 4.31 in the rig it still does this behaviour. I'd like others to try the same procedure to see if the same results are found and then we can get Wayne to checkout the firmware. Over to you all. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Receiver desense?
Thanks to you all for the replies so far. Further information for everyone: 1. Yes, the radio was turned off before the cars engine was shut down. (On several occasions) 2. The second battery was in no way connected to the cars charging system or to any other part of the cars wiring, it was just sitting in the tray of the ute and had been lightly used for the field day. 3. I suspect that the lights flickering on the radio had more to do with using wiring that was not capable of carrying 20+Amps (The wiring used is normally used for powering the 2M rig which draws no more than 10A. (It was just a test after all, I simply unplugged the lead from the 2M set and connected the K3's power lead to it.) I am more concerned with the almost total loss of receiver sensitivity. Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Powerpoll connector
I have to admit that I am not a fan of APP's either. I just cannot relate to the voltage drop across the connectors when drawing 20+A. On my rig (with its factory built cable) it approaches 1.2 Volt. (And yes, the connectors do get warm!) Even with decent cables that I have made using 4mm wire and 45Amp PP connectors I still see .6 to .8V drop. That to my mind is not acceptable. So, once the warranty expires on my K3 (in May) I am going to ditch the APP's and solder a fly lead of 4mm twin lead wire directly to where the APP's were or look at some (better) alternatives. Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Powerpoll connector
Hi Don, I have measured across the connectors as well as using the K3's display. Obviously the K3's display indicates worse than what it is but the fact remains that the voltage drop is unacceptable. I solder all my APP's, I don't believe that crimping connectors results in a good connection, particularly when your working with high current low[ish] voltage connections. I don't know how the connectors were fitted to the original cable that was supplied with my factory built K3 but it is significantly worse than cables I have made here so I assume that it is crimped. I have tried both genuine and non genuine APP's and neither instill any confidence in them for me. I'd rather use the 6 pin molex style connector that YaecomWood use as I have had less issues with those than I have ever had with APP's. however, as there is not enough room on the back panel for one of those style connectors, soldered wires to the mainboard will have to do. At a 20 amp current load, that should only result in a 0.012 volt drop across the connector. Are you certain you are measuring correctly (directly across the connector)? Or are you relying on the K2/K3 display voltage to determine the drop. Both have a series diode in-line, and the displayed voltage will be less than the power supply voltage - not due to the APP connector, but to the series diode. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/24/2011 6:08 PM, Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF wrote: I have to admit that I am not a fan of APP's either. If a K144XV PLL is also installed, we know that the 2-meter module is phase-locked to it. We then apply an offset to the 10-meter IF mathematically so that the 2-meter frequency is dead on.
