2023-09-19 Thread Jim McDonald
I am selling my microHAM microKEYER III with the DB37-EL-K3R cable for a
K3/K3S. It's in excellent condition.

Complete information at
https://www.microham.com/contents/en-us/d126_MKIII.html .

New price at DX Engineering is $570.

I also have a PS/2 numeric keypad with extension cable, for sending
CW/phone/RTTY messages and/ or SteppIR control, and the iLink SteppIR control
cable, which is no longer offered by microHAM.

$400 for the package. Buyer pays shipping from IL. All sales final.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Headphone Jack hardware?

2023-02-14 Thread Jim McDonald
I leave headphones and a microphone plugged into the front panel jacks and a
headset plugged into the rear jacks. I turn the speakers on and off with the
macro:

MN097;UP;MN255;

No wear and tear on the jacks.

I have macros set up in my K-Pod, DXLab's Commander module, and VA2FSQ's
Win4K3Suite, though only one would be sufficient!

Hi Martin - My K3 is on its second headphone jack, due to symptoms like yours.
Recently it started doing this again, but I was inside the radio for another
issue and reseated some boards (including KIO3 if I remember
correctly) and it stopped happening.  You might look into that before you
replace hardware.

I use my large one on my KPod. Since I rarely use the K4’s main tuning knob,
it’s simply pleasurable to use for tuning.

[Elecraft] Connecting software to K3/K3S

2022-12-05 Thread Jim McDonald
I've used microHAM microKEYERs (first the MKII and now the MKIII) with my K3
(and now K3S). I previously used a DB9 A/B switch to switch the radio between
the microKEYER and a computer COM port when I wanted to use the Elecraft K3
Utility. I reconfigured recently and eliminated the A/B switch because I
hadn't used the K3 Utility in a long time.

The recent thread about N2BC's K3_EZ program got me thinking about trying that
program or the K3 Utility using the 2nd CAT port in the microHAM Router
software that runs the MKIII. I just tried the K3 Utility, and it works fine.
I don't know why that never dawned on me before, but it's nice to not have the
cables and switch cluttering up my desk.

I have VA2FSQ's Win4K3Suite connected to the microHAM Router's 1st CAT port.

Re: [Elecraft] P span retention

2022-08-12 Thread Jim McDonald
I have the span "sticking" at 30 kHz when I change bands, but the center
frequency is changing with the P3 in fixed-tune mode.

I've tried the macros stored in the P3 and, just now, macros in VA2FSQ's
Win4K3Suite, but the center frequency doesn't stick.
https://va2fsq.com/

For instance, I want to see 7020-7050 with the center frequency of 7035. I set
that either with the buttons on the right side of the P3 or a macro, change
bands to 80 and then go back to 40, and the center frequency has changed to
7040, so the span is 7025 to 7055.

It's not a huge problem, of course, just a bit frustrating.

I also recall this problem. I am thinking that if you set them by a CAT command
they might not be remembered. You need to make a small change manually to cause
it to save them. I might be all wet, but it's easy to try it and see.

Hoping someone can advise "how to turn down the Beep level on a K3".  Such as,
when I press the Menu button I hear a loud Beep which is annoying so I want to
turn the level down.  This is new as the Beep level used to be much lower.

Re: [Elecraft] Rx-In/Out used for external SDR Device

2021-12-05 Thread Jim McDonald
Another option, which I've used, is to connect the SDR to the IF OUT, using the
splitter in the P3, or directly to the IF OUT on the K3.

The available bandwidth is the 200 kHz (I think) at the IF, of course. N1MM
and DXLab have an option to specify the IF input instead of using the signal
from the antenna.

This only works 1) if the SDR impedance is consistently high from
100 KHz to 54 MHz and 2) the SDR has excess gain to compensate for the loading
from the K3 receiver.

However without a splitter, there is no protection for the K3 receiver against
spurious signals generated by the SDR!

My K-Pod tune at half the rate of the K3S at all three VFO CTS settings.

If Elecraft could do it, I'd like for the K3/K3S F/W to provide the option for
the K-Pod to tune at the same rate.

In the K3, if you change *CONFIG:VFO CTS*, the VFO frequency moves faster at
400 than at 100 (counts per turn), but the K-POD always tunes at 100 or
200 counts per turn (can't remember which). The K-POD ignores the VFO CTS
setting on a K3.

In the K4, the equivalent setting is *MENU:VFO Counts per Turn*, and *both* the
VFO knob and the K-POD tuning rates are affected equally.

Just spin one knob exactly one full 360° turn clockwise, then spin the other
knob full turn counterclockwise. If you don't end up back on the frequency
where you started, it means the tuning rates are not the same.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K-Pod manual updated -- now covers use with the K4

2021-10-29 Thread Jim McDonald
I did check just before I sent my note. The new K-Pod F/W works the same as
1.09. At each setting in the K3S (was the same as the K3 I had before), the
K-Pod tuning rate is one-half of that in the radio.

I bought the K3 in 2009 and the K3S in 2017, and that never changed.

Check again, because that does not match my experience if your K-POD firmware
is at 1.09 (can't test now, sold both K3s). If CONFIG:VFO CTS is set to 100
(or 200?), I'm pretty sure the K-POD knob tunes at the same rate as the VFO A
knob. I don't think a power cycle is required.

If Elecraft could do it, I'd like for the K3/K3S F/W to provide the option for
the K-Pod to tune at the same rate.

Yes, we asked for that years ago, but it never happened, and I don't think it
will ever happen. There's just no room left in the K3's limited memory to add
such complex code now.

Consider upgrading from the K3 to a K4. K-POD plugs straight in via USB cable
and works perfectly.

The K-Pod is an accessory control panel that's ideal for use with the K4. It
provides 16 switch functions; control of VFO A/VFO B/RIT-XIT offset; and three
general purpose open-drain outputs for station control. You can use the K4's
macro editor to create command sequences to assign to K-Pod switches.

For further product details, see:

  https://elecraft.com/collections/k-pod-desktop-control-panel

Revision F of the K-Pod owner's manual now provides complete instructions for
use with the K4 transceiver. The manual can be found here:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/K-Pod/Manuals%20Downloads/E740285%20KPOD%20Owner's%20Manual%20Rev%20F.pdf

K-Pod firmware was also recently updated: Rev. 1.12 lets you configure the
K-Pod's encoder to have the same resolution as those on the K4 (up to 400
counts per turn).

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Replacing Headphone Jack

To reduced wear on the headphone jacks, I leave my headphones plugged in all
the time, both the front and rear panel jacks. I turn the speakers on and off
with a macro:

MN097;UP;MN255;

I have the macro available in three (!) places:

DXLab's Commander
K-Pod
Win4K3Suite

For that matter, I don't use the front panel controls very much, instead using
the K-Pod, logging programs, or Win4K3Suite.

I can probably reverse-engineer the removal of the front panel from the

Don't understand your "follow option" question.  I run mine in Fixed Tune Mode
which holds the span [i.e. edge frequencies] constant and the two VFO's show up
as two vertical cursors in the spectrum display.  The cursors move as I tune,
and when I go beyond the edge, the span shifts by the amount I've set in the
menu ... I use a full span.  In the Tracking Mode, your receive frequency is
always centered and the spectrum moves past it as you tune.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] K3 Config and Main Menu Dump?

2020-11-02 Thread Jim McDonald
You're welcome, Mike.

With Wayne's permission, I did a copy and paste from the PDF manual into Excel,
but that was several yeas ago, so it doesn't include the most recent firmware
updates.

With my K3S, I keep track of the settings the old fashioned way, by writing
them down on a printed copy of that section of the manual. I also have
VA2FSQ's program, which I really like.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-17 Thread Jim McDonald
I just received the cable I ordered from Amazon to replace the one that came
with the Bose QC-35 II headphones. Made in China, not surprisingly, but has a
5', flexible, braided cover and comes with a screw-on 1/4" adaptor for the
front panel headphone jack. It came just in time before my cat ate through the
very thin, OEM cable.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088CNY2VV/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s01?ie=UTF8=1

Unlike my ancient Bose QC2 headphones, they work without turning them on,
saving the rechargeable battery, when noise cancelling (or Bluetooth) isn't
required.

They work great with my cell phone using Bluetooth too.

-Original Message-

The rechargeable battery with noise cancelling on and Bluetooth off is rated at
40 hours. It uses the same USB charging plug as my Logitech keyboard, so I
have a charging cable on my desk.

I connect to my K3S with the cable, which is inadequate. It's 4' long,
lightweight, and flimsy. The jack on the headphones is a sub-mini, 2.5mm, and
the other end is a mini-phone plug, 3.5mm. Amazon has several replacement
cables that are heavier and designed for these headphones.

Sorry, but I need to correct a typo. The cable included with the headphones is
2.5mm at the headphones and 3.5mm at the other (radio) end, so an adaptor is
required, though not provided.

I just bought a pair yesterday at a closeout price of $170 from my local

some stores still have them. Amazon has them for $199 now.

My favorite headphones up to now has been Sennheiser HD 280 PRO but these sound

QC-35 does not noise cancel when attached via cord is not normal, mine is a

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] P3 CENTER frequency

2020-09-27 Thread Jim McDonald
I like the operation of the “Full Span” selection, but it seems after a band
change the center frequency of a 20 kHz span has changed. Instead of having
14080 – 14100, I’d see 14075 – 14095.

From Alan N1AL:

The P3 does remember center frequency per band. However, if you tune the

K3 VFO A to a frequency outside the old P3 display range, then the P3

center frequency is changed according to the rules specified by the

"FixMode" menu setting. If you want the center frequency never to change

no matter what frequency the K3 is set to, then set MENU:FixMode to

"Static".

[Elecraft] [P3] P3 CENTER frequency

2020-09-27 Thread Jim McDonald
I think I recall seeing a solution to the P3's losing the center frequency
using fixed tune mode when changing bands. It's very frustrating to have to
recenter the display after coming back to a band, especially in a contest when
it wastes time.

Is there a fix?

Why doesn't the P3 always remember the same center frequency when returning

Re: [Elecraft] "On second thought, I'll take the stairs."

And I have one that says "RTTY" but it's now a Digital DXCC. I had to
resort to FT8 to work Monaco to get on the Digital Honor Roll, with the
other 330 having been on RTTY.

Let's see if we can determine why you are seeing this behavior. What platform
are you using (Window, Mac, Linux), and exactly what is the scenario and
conditions you are seeing? In other words, please provide more info. I believe
K6KR has provided a bit of additional info. He wrote the KPA Utility for
Windows, and knows the computer side of things.

I wrote the code for both the bootstrap loader and the main program in the
KPA500. I tested all parts of the code operation for both bootstrap (which runs
with front power off) and main firmware (runs with power ON) with both the Mac
and Windows Utilities for each KPA500 firmware release as well as when the
Utilities are released. In fact I tested it earlier today with both the
original KPA500 and a newer one I bought a year ago. In all cases the KPA
Utility was able to turn on and off the KPAs properly.

With adequate information, we should be able to get things working properly for
you.

Re: [Elecraft] Balanced Mic to Unbalanced Connection Follow Up Question

2020-06-11 Thread Jim McDonald
I have a microHAM microKEYER III that I use with my K3S. I have a Heil
HM-10 Dual mic, which uses the Heil cable with an XLR connector, and a Heil
headset, which has a 3.5mm phone plug. Both connect to the MKIII, which
connects to the rear mic jack on the K3S, and it's easy to switch between
the two using the microHAM router software.

All:

The K3S seems to work flawlessly with XLR cable connected to the rear panel
mic input as per the groups recommendations. I have pins 1 and 3 connected
to the sleeve of the 1/8" plug and pin 2 to the tip. I'm using a dynamic mic
so the bias is turned off. This setup works fine on the
KX3 as well.

If anyone is interested, I have a brand new Heil XLR cable for the K3S that
I won't be using.

Thanks,

P3SVGA Video/FFT option in NOT a "VGA card" This is one of the most common
misunderstandings about Elecraft products, partially a result of an
uninformative Elecraft web site, poor marketing and a poor choice of part
number that reinforces the widespread misunderstanding about the functionality
of the P3SVGA option.

The P3SVGA 2048 point FFT processor provides much higher frequency resolution
per dot on a larger screen. The P3 built-in display has a
480x272 resolution while the P3SVGA resolution is 1440x900.

N6TV's web site is far more informative than any P3SVGA performance related
information available on the Elecraft web site. See slides 11 and 12:

Re: [Elecraft] QRO - KPA500 Failure

2020-02-06 Thread Jim McDonald
Elecraft self-insures on outbound shipments (i.e., shipments from Elecraft
to customer). That means they accept the responsibility of carrier loss or
damage because their history of loss/damage has been low.

The fact that they self-insure doesn't cover shipments to them unless the
company is paying for the shipping, as is the case with a warranty return,
I believe. Their shipping instructions for repair returns out of warranty
recommend the customer insure the shipment.

I received about a 25% discount from UPS when I shipped my KPA1500 a couple
of months ago due to my membership in a professional society. You might
check for similar discounts if you have any similar memberships.

Re: [Elecraft] Kpod Tuning Knob

2020-01-27 Thread Jim McDonald
I bought a set of the original, weighted knobs with the metal insert and
dimple in ball bearings on the larger knob.

i used them on my K3 but moved the larger knob to my K-Pod when I got my

I like the knob on the K-Pod a lot. I use the K-Pod more than the knobs on
the radio, and it allows me to use the larger, weighted knob for both VFOs

Did Windows possibly disable the Line Out?  Or, is it not even listed?

BTW, is the missing device the K3 LINE OUT  (PC Line In) signal, or the PC Line

[Elecraft] Confessions of grounding
Ok, I just rebuilt my station and wonder how many of you actually ground
your K3 or your rig?  I have the amp and tuner grounded, but I find
grounding the K3 somewhat difficult.  Why?  Getting my fat ham fingers to
the rear if the rig and tighting up the knurled knob with stiff wire is
quite infuriating.  All the connecting cables are in the way and it just
trips my trigger.  Then being able to reach over all the doodads and
geegaws to attach ground is a frustration of mine.  Many years ago it was
good practice to use solid wire but now i see others using braid.  Stiff
wire adds to my frustration.   So, for my mental health I would like some
suggestions or ideas how best to deal with this.  I know...suck it up.
There has got to be a better way.

I will submit that if this is required by ANY software, that it isn't packaged
correctly. An elevated installer should be used and installing as admin is
generally a really bad idea. There are a few exceptions only. Install
normally, K3_EZ will install correctly.

All of the APC units for which I've seen spec sheets are FCC Part 15 Class A
(the industrial spec, ILLEGAL to sell for residential use, roughly 20 dB
worse than Class B).

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/KAT500 paired with AL-1500?

The Alpha Delta switch that I use on the output of my KPA500 and 87A grounds

A pair of the Tohtsu CX-600NL relays from Surplus Sales of Nebraska

should work just fine. It would likely take a pair of transfer relays
- one on the input and one on the output of the amplifiers to do the same
thing.

The only advantage of transfer relays is that the unused amplifier could be
kept terminated in a dummy load.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/KAT500 paired with AL-1500?

2016-10-22 Thread Jim McDonald
I have a KPA500/KAT500 and an 87A/ATR-30 tuner connected to my K3. Not
important, but I have an Array Solutions Power Master II wattmeter with two
couplers connected to the amplifiers' outputs.

My approach is pretty low tech. I have the 87A connected to the K3's ANT2
port and the KPA500 connected to ANT1. I use an Alpha Delta manual coax
switch to switch my only antenna coax between the two amplifiers. (I
considered using a spare Daiwa switch but it's not rated at 1500W.) I
looked up the inter-port isolation for the antenna switch when I connected
it, and it seemed adequate, but I don't remember the specs.

The only thing that's a bit fancy is a macro I did recently to use in my
K-Pod. I don't switch amplifiers often so I used two press-and-hold buttons
on the K-Pod.

KPA500MN058;MP123;MN081;UP;MN255;AN1;

87A   MN058;MP000;MN081;UP;MN255;AN2;

You can either look through the K3 Programmer's Reference Manual if you want
the mental exercise or read my notes below:

MN058 - menu

MP123 - sets K3's tune power to 15W (just my preference).

MP000 - sets K3 tune power to NOR (not per band)

MN081 - toggles between per band power for the KPA500 or NOR for the 87A.

MN255 - exits the menu

AN1/AN2 - selects antenna 1 or 2.

-Original Message-

I'm considering adding a bigger amp to the shack. I'd like to continue to
use the KPA/KAT combo for quick hits and the bigger amp if/when needed. So
I'd like to make it convenient to switch between them.

The people I've talked to so far actually move coax to make the switch. I'd
like to avoid that.

I'd need to switch the K3s output from the KPA to the AL1500 and obviously
switch the outputs as well.

Obviously I'd also need to set the non-KPA power out of the K3 to the per
band power needed by the AL1500. I seldom run 100w so that wouldn't be a big
deal.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this without screwing/unscrewing
UHF connectors.

Extra credit for idiot proofing. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SWR/Tuner Utility

2016-10-13 Thread Jim McDonald
My computer is running the pre-anniversary edition of Windows 10 Professional.

I just started K3_EZ V2.0.0.8, and it works fine. I forget features of that
version seemed to have bugs, but I also have an older edition installed as
well. It may have a problem saving TX/RX EQ settings, but I'm not sure.

I always liked the program, which was developed by N2BC. It hasn’t been
updated for a long time.

For those not familiar with it, here’s a summary of the features from the help
file:

Overview: K3EZ is designed to provide the following basic functions:

*A simple frequency ‘Stacking’ function with most of the K3 front panel
buttons available to ‘click and change’

*An easy to use frequency memory database

*An easy to use graphic display and Set and Get of RX and TX Equalizers
with a saved setting database

*Basic K3 information (COM port, Firmware levels, installed options,
filters, etc.)

*A formatted and functionally organized display of the majority of the K3
CONFIG settings

*An easy to use K3 Command Utility, formats K3 responses in ASCII or HEX

*SWR Scan function to sample and graph SWR

With the exception of the K3 RX and TX equalizers, the program DOES NOT change
K3 CONFIG settings. It does provide easy to use access to the settings, but
YOU make the changes!

I installed the newest K3 firmware, 5.54, reset DXLab, MMTTY, and the K3 to
2125 and still get the 850 Hz error when transferring a spot from SpotCollector

I changed all back to low tones, 1225/1445, and get the same error.

Tony, K4QE, reported that he had the problem until he reverted back to K3

I need the newer firmware for my K-Pod, so I'll live with the apparent defect

An 850 Hz offset *sounds like* either your K3 or WinWarbler has been reset to

I've used DXLab Suite (Commander) for years with the K3 and do not know what

An 850 Hz offset *sounds like* either your K3 or WinWarbler has been reset
to 2125/2295 Hz. *CHECK BOTH* "Pitch" in the K3 and "Mark Offset"/"Optimal
Offset" in the FSK panel of WinWarbler's Configuration dialog.

I've used DXLab Suite (Commander) for years with the K3 and do not know what
button in the VFO B panel to which you refer. There are
*two* check boxes in the VFO A panel - one turns split on/off (equivalent to
holding A -> B on the K3 front panel) and the other turns the Sub RX on/Off
(equivalent to tapping Sub on the K3 front panel).

I'm using FW 5.52 at present and all radio control features of DXLab Suite
work just the same as they have in prior versions of the K3 firmware.

[Elecraft] [K3] FW 5.5 issue??

2016-09-30 Thread Jim McDonald
I installed K3 FW 5.50 to use my K-Pod, which I like very much. I have a
couple of weird problems using DXLab now that I can't explain and wonder if
the new FW might be related.

In DXLab, when I click on RTTY DX spot in SpotCollector the K3 changes the
frequency in the K3 but it's 850 Hz higher than the frequency that DXLab
sends to the radio. I'm using K3 FSK D with 1275/1445 tones, NOT AFSK.

I don't know if my other problem is attributable to the firmware either.
DXLab's rig control module, Commander, has a nice feature (activated by
clicking on a button in the VFO B panel) that will switch the radio to split
and turn on the subreceiver (called "dual receive" in Commander). It used
to do both of those but now only turns on split but not the subreceiver.

I'd very much appreciate someone also using FW 5.50 and DXLab would check to
see if my experience is unique to me or not.

Thanks.

Just wanted to take a couple of minutes to drop a line and say thank you for
having a booth at W9DXCC this weekend. It was great to meet Dave S. and see
the KX2 in person. I appreciate your making the effort to come to these
smaller regional gatherings and bring the full line of products, answer
questions and let us check everything out.

Also, many thanks for being a contributor of raffle prizes.

Re: [Elecraft] Now that the K-Pod is shipping, we could use your help with useful macros

2016-07-11 Thread Jim McDonald
This is explained better in KE7X's book, specifically the Memories section.
The Frequency Memory Editor program makes it easy to load the K3's memories.

73, Jim N7US

-Original Message-
I originally missed band stacking registers that I was used to before I got
my K3 in 2009, but I use work-arounds.

Two options:

1) Use the MEM 0-9 set to BAND SEL. Then use the K3 Frequency Memory Editor
program to load memories for memories 0-9 and each band. For instance, I
have the numeric keypad set:

1 160M
280M
340M
420M
515M
610M
730M
817M
912M
0 6M

Then, for each band M1 is set to a CW frequency, M2 is set to a RTTY
frequency, M3 is SSB, and M4 is JT65.

I'm used to it so I press M->V 4 to go to (the last frequency on) 20M. Then
I press M->V M2 if I want to go to the RTTY frequency (with AGC, DATA MD,
bandwidth settings, etc.) on 20M I have programmed into that memory.

2) Much easier is to use a program like DXLab with its Commander rig control
module that includes 100 memories including mode, etc. Clicking on a
cluster spot will QSY the radio and set the mode properly too.

This is one of the few things that annoys me about my K3S. I work a lot of
digital modes and switching back and forth between CW, SSB and Data is a
pain because of this.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod and Marcos

2016-06-15 Thread Jim McDonald
I use several with DXLab's Commander rig control module. They use standard
K3 commands so could be used with a K-Pod. They are in the Files area of
the Yahoo Group for DXLab. I believe you need to be a member of that Yahoo
Group to access them; they are at http://tinyurl.com/q5lqaa4 .

The ones I use in Commander include, Spot, VOX, Tune (at 15W, then back to
full power), speakers on/off, TX test, one to adjust the tuning rate using
CONFIG:VFO CTS, one to select two different mics, one on the front and one
connected to the back, each with different TX settings, front/rear panel mic
selection, and another to do a "reverse split."

73, Jim N7US

-Original Message-
Hi,

As I sit awaiting the K-Pod I'm looking for possible uses of it
beyond the remote tuning knob. . Suddenly 16 possible selections will be
available
with the TAP or HOLD functions of the PB switches .So far I have seven
potential uses with 2 still at the K3 using the PF buttons. A lot of
potential will be sitting unused.

Looking back Fred, KE7X proposed a macro repository and it still
exists
here:

http://www.ke7x.com/home/k3-macro-repository

It is certainly underutilized. Another source is Dave's, NK7Z. keyboard
project:

http://nk7z.net/adding-an-external-keypad-to-the-k3/

A Google search reveals more macro's. But not any central location. The
value
of a central location is not entirely in preventing reinventing the wheel.
There are many clever individuals on this list and the real value of a
repository is in the "Aha" moment of "Why didn't I think of that.".

I'd love to see a central location. It may be Elecraft could host it.
Possibly with 2 areas. Elecraft checked for all models and unchecked user
submitted
macro's. Elecraft hosting surely would be a value added to their product
line. A concept from the new KX2 may be adaptable to a K3/K3S. But sharing
is required.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Feature Requests

2016-06-08 Thread Jim McDonald
I see in the K3 & KX3 Programmer's Reference (page 16) that the AGC
threshold, MN044 or MP044, is accessible via software. I have what DXLab
calls user-defined sliders for AF and RF gain and power; maybe a similar
slider could be created for AGC threshold. Or maybe a stepped macro for the
radio or the K-Pod could be developed.

73, Jim N7US

-Original Message-

I'm not sure if this is on the list of requested firmware features, so I'll
mention it here just in case:

Request 1: I'd like to be able to adjust the RX filter shift/width while
transmitting. I often take a moment to assess things like passband, RIT,
etc. when CQing during a contest, and if I'm extensively using the narrowest
filter/shift to dig out weak signals, I like to revert to a wider passband
for the next QSO. While I know I could do this using a CAT command, I'd
like to be able to do it using the knob.

Request 2: After using a Flex Maestro there is one clever feature that I
think the K3 could incorporate via a small firmware change. The Maestro has
a front panel knob that adjusts the AGC threshold. I find this useful
because in some band conditions turning the knob feels like it makes a big
improvement (different signal levels, static, etc.). I'd like to request
that one of the K3's front-panel encoders be optionally made to adjust AGC
threshold. Perhaps VFOB or the RIT knob -- perhaps both RIT and XIT lights
could come on when that knob was in AGC THRESH mode. (maybe a knob on the
K-Pod could be assigned to this as well... I don't own one yet).

Re: [Elecraft] Macro Library Repository and K3/K3S/KX3 Utility Programs

2016-02-04 Thread Jim McDonald
Why not upload them to the Elecraft_K3 Yahoo Group files area?

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Elecraft_K3/files

I and others uploaded several K3 user-defined controls for DXLab's Commander
rig control module to the DXLab Yahoo Group Files area a few years ago.
Commander allow many more macros than the buttons on the radio do, and they can
be executed by pressing a mouse button or an F-key. I think it's pretty easy
to create them in Commander.

You can download them and use them without rekeying them.

Information on Commander user-defined controls (sequences and sliders) is
available at:
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/commander/Help/CommandSequences.htm .

Since macros are only text files, I personally have no need of fancy
functionality in a library or utility. The current Elecraft K3 utility works
beautifully.

So for me, a simple Web site (or shared Google doc) listing macro examples is
all the functionality that I think is needed.

The automatic SWR curve generation is very cool, and I like the ease of
testing different RX and TX EQ settings which can be saved. I have 2005 and

Visalia in 2007, I think.

The developer, W2BC, was in declining health, and I see the call has been
reassigned, so I assume he's a SK. I corresponded with him several times,
and he was cordial and helpful.

You can save screenshots of each screen after you scan the radio for each

I use a microKEYER II with my K3 but have an A/B switch to bypass the MKII

when using this program or the K3 Utility program.

meter turn backwards, and with a small array it would turn pretty slowly
anyway. But I do want city power in parallel when we exceed solar array
capability.

- I want a backup battery that's sufficient to hold us for a couple of days
during a blackout. Every once in awhile on a really hot day, city power
consumption exceeds what's available, and a transformer blows somewhere. Very
entertaining until you have to go buy ice for the fridge.

Systems that meet the above requirements seem to cost a lot more than the sum
of the parts. So what I'm looking for is a good source of roll-your-own-solar
info. I'll hire an electrician to wire up the solar system in parallel with the
city supply, but I could purchase the components and do most of the
installation myself.

Any suggestions? Please contact me off-list.

tnx
Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] Heil HC-7 Dynamic Element with K3/0 Setup

2014-12-21 Thread Jim McDonald
The Heil page suggests LOW not HIGH. I have, and sometimes use, a PR781,
which is one they mention along with the HC6, and I use LOW. My settings
for the PR781 are intended to make it more like an HC4, which is what I use
for DXing. I cut the lows more and emphasized the highs more than Heil's
settings.

Being a retired accountant, I keep Excel files of the mic settings (and
menu/config settings, which are in the Elecraft_K3 yahoo Group files area).
I can email my mic settings file if you want it but you can start with the
Heil settings and experiment.

I also got one of the Pro 7s. Up until now I have been strictly CW and this
is my first venture into voice. There are suggested DSP settings for
Elecraft, but nothing else. I had to set my MAIN: MIC SEL to high to get an
output; I don't know if that is correct or not. I am still playing with the
other adjustments..

 Hi Guys,

I have a brand new Heil Pro-7 Headset with mike, in a snazzy red
color. The reports on my audio are terrible, so I must have something
setup wrong. The audio is very low, and appears to have some
background noise. My Heil headset with an HC4/HC5 mike element is a
little better, but still low, on both elements.

In contrast, my Elecraft MH-2 mike sounds great and gets great
reports. It has much more audio output.

I am operating remote from Key West using a K3/0 mini and RemoteRig to
 a K3 located in Maryland.

I have mike bias on, but on or off makes no difference.

 Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] k3-kat500-pr6-DigiKeyer via 2 Y cable in cascade should be OK ?

2013-05-13 Thread Jim McDonald
I have two Y-adapters cascaded on the back of the K3:

First Y:

Top Ten Devices Band Decoder (to switch DX Engineering antenna switch on
tower) PR6

Second Y:

MicroKEYER II (for FSK PTT)
KPA500 KPAK3AUX cable

I connected the wire to the PR6 to pin 11 of the DB15 going to the Top Ten

That should be OK but quite the rats nest. :) I would suggest either an
HD15 breakout board from Winford Engineering or see if you can find one of

The scenario it should be :

[Elecraft] [K3] Power control sensitivity with KPA500

2013-04-27 Thread Jim McDonald
I've only had my KPA500 for a couple of weeks. It seems to have so much
gain that adjusting the K3's power control takes a very fine touch to drive
the amplifier to the desired 500W without overshooting. It's too easy for
me to add 50W of KPA500 output when I really want, say, 10w or 20W, but
maybe I'm being too finicky.

I normally use the per-band tune menu option so it's only a problem when
adjusting the drive, of course.

I'd appreciate having a K3 menu item to adjust the sensitivity of the power
control.

[Elecraft] PR6 KPA500 summary?

2013-04-16 Thread Jim McDonald
I haven't paid close enough attention to the PR6/KPA500 postings and would

I recently added a KPA500 to my K3/PR6. I have two Y-cables connected to my

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA BOARD FOR THE P3

2013-02-27 Thread Jim McDonald
Can someone point me to a screenshot with the SVGA display showing decoded
text? Thanks.

73, Jim N7US

-Original Message-
Hi Paul,

I had the P3 sitting on top of the K3 and I was completely happy. I bought
the SVGA board and am now twice as happy. I can view a wider area (even
though my monitor is only 1280x1024) and the waterfall function is now
taller and has proven to be far more useful to me than on the P3 alone.

If you like to view decoded CW, RTTY, or PSK it can display that as well
without losing hardly any screen real estate. I am fond of this feature.
There is also a keyboard input for sending RTTY or PSK which I'm not using
but others have found that it works quite well.

I already had an external monitor connected as a second monitor on my PC. It
has front selectable inputs (SVGA and DVI) so I can still use it for the PC
as well as with the P3. (It just required a bit of switching around on my PC
to establish the main PC monitor as SVGA and the secondary PC monitor as
DVI). A push of the monitor button flips it between the PC and the P3.

Mike K2MK

when I ran the K3 Utility, it would find the K3 just fine, and I could
select any of the tabs in the K3 Utility except Firmware.  When I select
Firmware, the K3 Utility crashes and vanishes.  This is true for all ports
on the Edgeport.  When I try it with the KX3 Utility, the behavior is
similar--though I can see the firmware tab, when I select CHECK FOR NEW
FIRMWARE the KX3 Utility crashes and vanishes.

Does anybody know what is going on?

Re: [Elecraft] K3; Main menu and Config menu settings

2013-01-23 Thread Jim McDonald
From my post of 21-Jan:

I added a tab for P3 menus to my Excel file of K3 main and config menus. I
just copied and pasted the material from the current manual to enable an
owner to record the menu selections used without needing a paper copy. I
added a row for the new menu items that aren't included yet in the current
(Rev. C) manual.

Just re-title the N7US column of each tab/worksheet with your call and
enter your own choices if different than the default.

The new file and the original one are in the Files area of the Yahoo
Elecraft_K3 reflector:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/files/

but it can be downloaded OK.

-Original Message-

Hi Richard,

Thanks,

Matt Zilmer

-Original Message-
I recently downloaded the files N7US made of the K3 Main menu and Config
menu. If you haven't done so, I suggest you download them from the Elecraft
files. They show the Default, and N7US settings, with good explanations of
what each item does.

Also, there has been past questions posted about how to list, and save, your
settings. Of course, the K3 utility will save them to reload if needed
which is valuable.

As was pointed out, K3-EZ will display them, but a screen capture will be
needed to save them.

HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) will display them nicely, and changes can be made on
screen, and/or saved. To do this, (per my version) you click on 'Tools' at
the top of the screen. In the window that opens, scroll down near the bottom
and select 'Extended menus'. A small window opens and select 'Elecraft'. It
takes a few seconds to display as it scans your settings.

When the screen lists all your settings, I call your attention to the yellow
info icon at the bottom with the note that says Changes are applied
immediately. I have not tried making changes this way, yet.

Click on 'Text' at the top. A window opens and you will have four choices.
I prefer 'Text, no border' but YMMV. Also put a check mark in the 'View
File' box. From there, it will display all in Notepad where you will have
options to Save, Print, etc.

Rich, n0ce
