[Elecraft] KX2.KX3 Serial Port Extender

2017-04-02 Thread Bill Conkling
I have just put finishing touches on a Serial Port Expander for use with the
KX3/KX2 series of transceivers. The device will plug into a regular or USB
serial adapter (DE-9M) like the standard KUSB from Elecraft.

I have posted a PDF document on my web site at http://nr4c.net/projects
.

I use SMD resistors and transistors to switch the DTR and RTS lines for CW and
PTT. It also has the RXD & TXD signals use for cat control. It makes the KX
transceivers look like a K3 to your logging software such as DXLabs and n1mm.

The circuit board may be ordered from Oshpark.com for
$3.40 for 3 boards so interest a friend or two. There. Is a link in the doc for
this service.

I have included links to Mouser.com for the transistors
and resistors as well. They are very inexpensive but the shipping will get you
if you don't order some other stuff.

You can email me if you have any questions.

BTW: I have a limited supply of the transistors and resistors avail for $2.00
for 3 each (in case you lose one) if you supply a SASE and 2 bucks. Email first
as these are first come first served. No, I don't have any circuit boards at
this time.

Couple questions:

1) What radio, K3 or K3S, or K2/100?

2) which antenna, 1 or 2?

3) You said you turned the “temps down to a more reasonable 23C…” I don’t
recall a temp setting, only a REF to current room temperature calibration step.

4) What is the voltage shown on the front panel display?

2016-07-19 Thread Bill Conkling
Well, the FM filter for the main receiver is mounted on the main RF board. So
the 2Meter module must come out, and the sub-receiver, and of course the top
and front bottom panel, I also think it is easier to re-install the
sub-receiver if you remove the left side panel (with handle).

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 and N1MM F-Keys

2016-07-07 Thread Bill Conkling
From my own experience, KY commands work but are clumsy, and there is a l limit
to how many characters can be sent with one command, The simple switching
circuit is quite easy to do and works extremely well,

All it takes is a 2N transistor with base connected to the proper pin (4 or
7) thru a 1.2K (1k -1.5K) Ohm resistor, The collector goes to the plug shield
and the emitter goes to the tip of the plug.

Plug this into the standard KUSB or standard serial cable.

You can build a pair of simple transistor witches into a DE-9 shell and add
cables for TX, RX, DTR, and RTS with the proper plugs and it will “look” like a

Re: [Elecraft] Hooking 2 headsets to K3S

I just plug one into the rear jacks, usually also the mic of my CM500. Then
plug the phones of a second CM500 into the front phones jack (w/adapter).

For many of our club events we leave the CONFIG/Speaker+phone set to “YES”. so
that onlookers may listen as well But using phones for operator and logger
allows some isolation from chatter of by-standers standing around.

Check the K3S assembly manual. If I remember correctly from my Original K3
assembly, the manual paused to instruct you when it was time to install various
options to allow you to install or skip steps if yu were not installing that

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KIO3B setup

2016-01-18 Thread Bill Conkling
Well, first, I don’ recognize the CBLP3T cable. Maybe you meant CBLP3Y? If so,
I think yu would still need a DE-9 “Y” cable to connect at the P3 at which ever
port you used before (TXCVR or PC).

Be sure to set CONFIG:RS-232 to USB and not 38400 as before. And now your
audio input/output is the new USB CODEC. Have fun and let us know how it works.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CW Message Memories

2016-01-18 Thread Bill Conkling
You are correct that the KDVR3 is not needed for CW messages. However, you
must be in CW mode (or one of the two DATA sub-modes PSK-D or FSK-D) for these
messages to work. And, if you are set to SPLIT operation, VFO B must also be
in CW mode.

They also work in TEST mode. However, be careful, my K3S MODE button is more
fussy than the button on my K3 and sometimes when trying to get the TEST mode,
I press the button not quite right and it goes to SSB/LSB so that when I press
it again, now i’m in TEST mode, but in SSB instead of CW.

Noter, there is no Mode "TX DATA”. The “TX” is an icon with an arrow pointing
either down to it, or up to it indicating which VFO (A or B) is the transmit
frequency. It jujst happens that the MODE “DATA” is next to it.

Yes, I had the same issue last weekend. I rec’d help from several listers
including Dick who showed me the proper syntax for n1mm. Below is the function
key file I used with n1mm.

#NEW VERSION, This Function Key File requires N1MM Logger V12.02.00 or newer
#EDITS REQUIRED, before using this file-

#REM, F2 F7 {SENTRST} defaults to 599 or allows manual entry of sig report
#REM, I have shown examples of using "*", "!" as well as {MYCALL}and
#REM, (CALL) for call signs.
#REM, I use MMVARI for digital modes with n1mm because it will
#REM, work with RTTY and PSK31.

The "<04>;” is a ^D or ctrl-D which is an EOT (end of transmission) character
from ‘days of olde’ i’m told. The brackets indicate HEX base.

I realize these are for n1mm, your software may be totally different. Hope
this helps, some.

[Elecraft] [K3] Recent post about n1mm macros to send FSK without fancy hardware

2015-11-11 Thread Bill Conkling
There was a recent post on a reflector (don’t know which one) that listed n1mm
function key macros for sending FSK using KY commands I think. It didn’t seem
to require any interface other than usual serial cable. I am interested in
this information.

If this will work with DX Labs as well, please include that info.

Thanks for your time.

Re: [Elecraft] experience with CW and settings

2015-09-24 Thread Bill Conkling

My experience with CW decode is:

Try setting the THR to 2. Now, with the CWT enabled press the SPOT button and
the little signal marker should align with the index mark. And, the marker
should flash in step with the audio CW signal. If it stays on too much, set
THR up to 3, or vice versa, If you can’t find a THR setting that is right, set
it to a setting that keeps the little marker ON too long, and adjust RF gain
CCW until the marker keeps step with the CW audio. Yu should get good decode
at this setting. Decode will only work if the receiver is tuned spot on to the
signal and the marker is flashing every dit nd dah.

[Elecraft] Mac utility with K3S Puts K3S in TX mode!

2015-07-24 Thread Bill Conkling

I have been using my K3S with Win 7 so far and decided to give the Mac a chance
to play.

Downloaded the latest utility for the Mac (Latest OSX, Macbook Pro I7 w/16gigs)
and convinced the Mac that I really did want to open this file. I selected the
USB com port and my radio immediately went into TX mode and would not stop. I
shut down the radio. Stated K3S again and it was still in TX. I unplugged the
USB, radio still in transmit. Powered off rdio, power on again, still in TX.

Now I connected the rdio to my Win 7 machine, and all is well again.

Now, plug USB back into the Mac, re-read paragraph two above.

I am a new user to the Mac and don’t know a lot about the comport details so
this is probably something silly, but I need some assistance. Help!

Part 2)

Just to sav e time, I hooked up the K3 to Mac with KUSB cable, and sure enough,
it also goes to TX when connected to the Mac. So it;s not the radio, must be a
setting in the computer, a hiccup in the utility.

FWIW: I have moved the modified KBPF3 and filters from my old K3 to the K3s
yesterday and that is working just fine.

A followup to my original post:

I started VMWare and ran WIN8.1 and insetalled the latest Utility. No problems

Now to test the K3s…..

Re: [Elecraft] Mac utility with K3S Puts K3S in TX mode!

2015-07-24 Thread Bill Conkling
To all that replied.

A club member (my local Mac guy) suggested getting the latest FTDI driver,
which I did from Elecraft website link.

I did change CONFIG/PTT settings to OFF-OFF. All ok. Tried starting Utility
in SSB and CW mode with no errors.

Reset CONFIG/PTT to RTS-DTR, all still ok. I think the driver did it.

Now, question?

If I set the PTT-KEY to OFF-OFF, can n1mm still use those lines to handle PTT
and Keying? I assumed not, but……..

Thanks Guy(s)

I'm not qualified to discuss how to turn off DTR and RTS on a Mac from
the operating system. Better to set the K3 to not respond to those.

Commonly, if used, DTR and RTS are controlled by applications running
on the computer using a serial port to talk to the K3, but the state
of those absent a program controlling them is unclear. N1MM logger and
logger plus have a config setting to set up DTR and RTS for use or to
force them to a given state.

If you DO at some point decide to use DTR and RST for keying and/or
PTT, you will have to completely understand and control those lines
coming from the computer, be they Windows or Apple.

Otherwise they should both be turned off in the K3 config.

DTR and RTS are part of any serial connection, so this would be true
as well using the new USB connection for K3/K3S. The DTR and RTS
information from the computer still must either be managed or turned
 off in the config.

The K3 manual version D10 has a discussion of these pinouts on page 18.

No, not intuitive.

MKR B is the VFO B frequency. Often one wants to listen on the B frequency.

and I place the Magenta marker at that location and tap: The Sub Rx
goes to that frequency where the DX was last listening but sub is not
engaged, it just sits on that frequency and does nothing with it.

Problem is that if I don't then reach over and manually hold the
split button on the K3 itself to have the K3 transmit on the DX
listening frequency, I'll still keep transmitting on the DX transmit
frequency because the K3 will not have gone split; its as if the
procedure is halted half way and it shouldn't function this way, its
not intuitive.

If I'm going to the effort to engage Marker B to QSY its because I
want to transmit on the Marker B frequency. What do I have to the do
differently to force the K3 go split to transmit on the B freq when I
tap on MKR B?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 macro's to switch mic's

2014-03-19 Thread Bill Conkling
Jeff,

I watched this nthread for a while and saw a dozen or so responses, but
no-one bothered to help you with a macro or two. It seems that everyone has
opinions on what mic or jack and maybe which fingefr to use to press the
ON.

But, as for the macros, here goes.

These are old, but you can see what I have done and adjust accordingly.
Good luck!

TO set mic to front for Hiel HM10-Dual

Name: -MicFP

Macro:  MG020;CP020;MN053;DN;DN;TE-03-03+00+00+03+03+00+00;SWT11;

ASSIGN TO PF1

This will set gain to 20, the compression to 20, set mic to front, adjust TX
Equalization and set range to H

To set rear for YAMAHA CM500

Name: -MicRPl

Macro:  MG017;CP005;MN053;DN;DN;UP;TE+00+00+00+03+03+03+03+03;SWT11;

ASSIGN TO PF2

This will set gain to 17, compression to 5, set mic to rear, adjust TX
Equalization and set range to L

NOTE:'

The setting for range H or L is a toggle. If you press the same function
key twice, it will toggle the range. Therefore these macros leave the Main
Menu active to show the Front/Rear and Range setting. Just press the MENY
butoon and you are ready to go. If the range is wrong, just press keypad #1
to toggle to the other setting.

This combo is just that, a start. There are some gurus on the list that
have written macros that only require one pf# key as they do some magic and

Re: [Elecraft] [k3] Mic Gain: Option 7

Yes the ref to 3 is a long overdue edit. I have used 7 to work with my Heil

in there, no need.

As for LPBridge

1. Im not very fond of port splitter programs. One DCE to one DTE device is
the RS-232 standard

2. F6DEX and N8LP need to modify LP Bridge to support Unicode strings. They
are still MCSB and Microsoft is totally going to Unincode

Asking us to make 6.2 work with LpBridge is like asking Microsoft to fix
Windows for something that they broke in 8.X with HRD. (and they did). When
we contacted Microsoft, they said we had to modify our code to match Windows
8.

So the LpBridge guys need a Unicode version to work with HRD 6.

And there is no they, there is US! Rick, Mike, Tim, Erik, Erin, Jon, V,
Gordy, etc etc

As for your question in ticket number 859567, all support for 6.2 is being
done in the forum and I see no posts in there.. I know there was one on the
yahoo group, but that is not official HRD support.

So the answer is, look at some of my posts in this thread from earlier and
you'll see the fixes...

fix some of the K3 problems. When I asked what they fixed I received
absolutely no response. The 6.2 release is not compatible with LP-Bridge

their bug list has been there for some time and they seem in no hurry to fix

What mic are you using?

Did you set up the mic according to the procedure in the manual?

You must keep the mic in the same relative position while you speak and keep
the voice power constant. Often when making test such as this, we move our
head to get better view of meter and turn away from the mic. A headset with
boom mic is useful for this test.

Good luck.

Thanks for the initial round of comments and suggestions.

The radio did go through the calibration as per the instructions - worked fine.

Symptoms: Full CW power yet on SSB with mic at 28 and comp at 25, initially
full power out, then quickly drops off to say 10 to 15 watts.  Have tried the
ATU and no change - thinking it was a problem with SWR and the radio is
protecting itself (of course on the same band, the CW power is stable with or
without the ATU).  Almost behaves like there is some AGC action and drives the
power down.  But then it will jump back up sporadically. Also the quality of
the audio is weird (not sure how to describe). Don't believe the connectors
are intermittent with the mic connection.

I have a second K3 and set both MENU and CONFIG items the same - still the
problem continues.

The mic connection has been made directly to both the front and the rear
connections - no change
With or without ATU on - no change

Different mics tried and no change.
Swapped power supplies (one K3 to the other) no change

Suggestions now?

Re: [Elecraft] Reverting from FW 4.83 to the Previous Release Version

2014-02-24 Thread bill conkling
Yes. Check the web site download pages and there should be a Archive of
earlier releases.

Also check for earlier betas. Beta with same number as production are same.

Phil Wheeler w...@socal.rr.com wrote:

My K3/P3 arrived Friday. I listened a bit, mostly
on SSB but some on CW. I don't recall any issues
with how it sounded to me.

Yesterday afternoon I finally got around to
installing the K3 Utility and P3 Utility on my
shack Win 8.1 PC. I discovered that MCU 4.83 had
been released and upgraded from the version my K3
#8004 was delivered with. All that went well --
and I noticed that the DSP firmware was updated,
too, from msgs on the LCD.

Last night I again listened to more CW and with
some settings the audio seemed different, for
lack of a better term. Most likely this is due to
my newness to the K3 and some significant hearing
impairments (stone deaf in one ear and the good
one isn't so great), but I'd like to wring it out
and see if there is/was a difference.

So I'd like to try installing the previous release
version (4.67 or 4.76) on my K3 and do some A-B
testing. The problem is that since my K3 came with
the earlier version installed, I likely do not
have the needed firmware files in my computer to
be loaded -- though reading at the Elecraft
website it looks possible to do such a reversion
if you do have them in your computer

My questions: Are the needed earlier files
available for download, and if they are, which
files are they and how do I go about telling the
K3 utility to load them (I assume it's akin to
installing a beta version but as a K3 owner of 48
hours I've not had the opportunity to load beta
firmware).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 external speaker output dead

If you used s stereo plug, how is it wired? Should be tip and shield for ONE
speaker.

Also is SPKR + PH set to YES? If this is NO then you won't have any speaker
output. If the internal spkr works this isn't a problem.

Now before you guys think I too am complaining--no, I just have a curious mind!

Two questions that I am sure you more experienced can help me with:

1. When I begin narrowing the DSP down, on filter 1 (2.7, std, offset -0.84)
only the lower freq side moves.  The DSP switches to the 2.1 filter, reacting
the same, but when it narrows to about 1.10 (within filter 2; 2.1, offset 0.0)
it changes so that both low and high move equally.  Even narrowing continues
through the 700 and 400 Hz filters.  The reverse occurs in the same way.   I
have checked the offsets with the K3 program, and they are set as required.
On the K-3 display the bar-thing always seems to move equally on both sides.
 Is this normal?

2. When seen on the P-3, on hi-cut-lo, if I move the lo side, the higher freq
side moves, and if I move the hi side, the lower freq side moves.  On the K-3
display the expected side moves.  Again, is this normal?

I have the last production software installed.  This was first noticed when I
got the P3 and a big screen, when in a contest I wanted to shift the
receiver up to avoid a disturbing signal and found I had to move the hi side
to move the lo side!  Now I am accustomed and just watch my screen to make
sure I am moving outside of the interfering peak.

These only bother me because I know there must be a reason but I don't why
it happens!  If curiosity is going to kill the cat, don't tell me and I will
just continue to be happy with my partial K-line!

Thanks for your patience,

Re: [Elecraft] Issue with the KX3, KXPA100 and software on 17m...can hear the serial commands

Are you using a RS232 cable or a USB to serial cable?

Hi I was wondering if anyone else has this issue:

I have the KX3 and the KXPA100 connected through the wiring kit and I am
connecting to the combo with Ham Radio Deluxe or Win4K3Suite. If I go to 17m,
and the software is running I can literally hear the serial commands in my
headphones. It sounds like tons of clicks, and chirping noises on 17M only. I
also hear it on 12m but much quieter. It also shows up on the s-meter as an s-5
pulsing. If I turn off the KXPA100, the noise goes away.
I have tried a different serial port cable connected to a different port and
there is no difference.

It is definitely coming from the KXPA100. I never had this before I installed
the amp.

Can anyone here confirm to me if this is just my setup or are other
experiencing the same issues?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 4.81 beta anomally

2014-02-08 Thread bill conkling
I think there two levels of software we should consider.
1- FIELD TEST - Software available to selected field testers which should be
discussed among testers and Elecraft techs. This includes revs that are
supplied to a more expansive group via direct email to Eric or Wayne.

2 - BETA... Software announced on list to all and available from Elecraft BETA
folder on web site for download. As this is avail to all, comments should be
public.

Your job is to help find the problems so they can be fixed before
production.

More than a few times I've withdrawn functions and features because they
didn't prove to be useful, sometimes spectacularly so.

It's pretty common for a beta test agreement to include a non-disclosure
clause.

Particularly now, with the internet, bugs can develop a life of their
own, even if they're never present in released software.

I don't know what Elecraft does, but software released for beta testing
is reasonably subject to the terms and conditions that Elecraft chooses
-- and as widely or narrowly as they wish.

Bugs found in testing have practically no bearing on ones' investment --
except perhaps as a distraction. I'd argue that a wide-open beta
actually reduces the value of your investment.

front of the K3 and work fine. The CM-500 mic plug (grey) is plugged into
the corresponding jack on the AD1K. When I press my footswitch, the K3
goes into transmit but there is no audio when I speak into the CM-500's

K3 and into the AD1K footswitch jack and it works fine (puts the K3 into
transit) in both cases.

When plugged into the rear Phone and Mic jacks on the K3, the CM-500 works
like it should. In that case I have the firmware set to RP.L bIAS.and both
the CM-500 microphone and headphones work fine, so I'm quite sure the CM-500

I've recently noticed a very occasional anomaly with the KPA500. Every once in
a while, I go to power it on and nothing happens. I have to reach around to
the back panel rocker switch, turn it Off and then back on. Then, the front
panel power on button brings the amp to life. So far I've not been able to
track it down to a particular sequence of operating events that precedes it.
In the past 3-4 days, this has happened maybe three times.

Anyone else have this happen, and if so (1) what causes it, and (2) how to

Seems right simple ,but my two choices here do not work.
Use the keyer, push the PTT foot-switch, and I get a nice string of dots

Where, on the K3, would one pug in a regular old straight-key, and

The answer to that would solve my Sequencer problem for tuning w/o

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Crimping small wires

2013-12-11 Thread bill conkling
Crimping the wire over the insulation doesn't seem too good to me.

I have used a dab of hot melt glue to stabilize the wire at the rear of the PP
Plastic.

EricJ eric_c...@hotmail.com wrote:

I don't usually do that because the wire exiting the APP barrel is still
just a small strand that flexes easily and can eventually break. It
gives you a lot more surface area for crimping, but needs strain relief
to be secure in the long run.

What I do is strip the wire the same length as normal, then fold it back
over the insulation. I insert the wire and insulation into the barrel
with the wire down (away from the split in the barrel), then crimp
normally. This makes a solid electrical connection with the stiffness of
the wire insulation which also provides more than adequate strain relief.

I've mentioned it here before and some are aghast, but I have maybe a
dozen connections like that currently in my shack and not one of them
has ever failed in the 10 years I've been doing it with APPs. But any
connection where this is necessary is a low voltage, low current DC
connection so what's it going to hurt? It isn't any worse electrically
than using a small wire nut which is considered safe enough even for
house wiring.

I wonder if any of you do what I do when using wires are too small for
crimp connectors? I strip twice as much insulation from the end of

using small nose pliers to get it doubled tight enough to fit inside
the crimp connector. The crimps hold the undersized wire very well
 with this procedure.

BTW this works for solid conductor wire, like hookup wire. Bend the
conductor double and there is something for the crimp to hold.

I do not know if this will work with powerpole connectors. My problem
was having too large diameter wire for the powerpole connectors which
inhibited proper crimping; solution chose proper size connector for
 the wire size selected.

 Charlie,

The PowerWerx crimper is good. Just be certain to fill the cavity with
wire - for instance the 30 amp connectors are sized for #12 wire - if
the wire is smaller, it may be loose, so in addition to filling the
barrel with as many wire strands as I can, I add some solder for extra
 security.

shorts with a multimeter, but if the coax has been crushed and the

Is it possible to short one connector with a 50ohm resistor, then on the

obvious SWR changes? I mean to me (read: newbie when it comes to this) it
should show a flat 50ohms across the bands, correct?

I have a few spools of 100' RG8X that I'm sure have been slammed in a
