Re: [Elecraft] K3 Strange Power Output Problem

2018-05-14 Thread DaleJ
I had this same problem operating split while listening to 18.150 and
transmitting on 16.298.5 the K3s would show zero output. However operating
split from 20 meters to 16.298.5 worked. Yes I have the KBPF3, The other
freq’s we used split worked fine.

[Elecraft] Elecraft] Current MARS Radio

2017-04-28 Thread DaleJ
"Unfortunately the K3 is not highly recommended for MARS use as it does
not have full power output from 2 to 30 Mhz.”

The K3/K3s does have complete coverage in transmit full power output except for
a small portion around the IF frequency. You would need the KBPF board for
general coverage transmit though.

On our phone patch net we utilize a wide range of authorized frequencies quite
removed from the ham bands. The K3 has full output on all except for one where
it is close to the IF and power is reduced to 12 watts, but not a problem with
Acom 2000A and KPA-500.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Internal Clicking Sound

2015-10-21 Thread DaleJ
When I called support about this they said it was normal expansion and
contraction of the heat sink. They also said for me to check the screws and
make sure they are tight. I went the step further and added heat sink compound
and lock washers under the screws. Never clicked again.

This is an interesting topic and the explanation I saw on it some time back made
perfect sense. However, I also find it interesting that I have never
experienced the ticking at all on mine. Over the last couple of years, it has
had a nice workout almost daily on six meter digital modes, where it heats up to
stage 4 and sometimes 5 on the fan, and it has never done it. Even before that,
when it was newer and was only used on SSB/CW (stage 1 and sometimes 2 fan), it
didn't do it. I'm curious why some do and some don't???

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Internal Clicking Sound

2015-10-21 Thread DaleJ
Yes, the book says normal, but it's annoying. I fixed mine by taking the
heatsink off and using heatsink compound on it to the mating surface then I
used locking washers under the machine screws and tightened it down, be careful
not to over toque. The clicking is caused by the heatsink expanding and
contracting.

Good luck

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta 5r10 and LINK

2015-02-16 Thread DaleJ
Hello, digest mode here so posting is a little clumsy, but here goes.

I suggest that a config menu option be made where a selection of link or
diversity be made and assigned to the one second sub button hold. For those
who like link, they could assign that one second button hold as link. For
those like me, want it as diversity could similarly go into the config menu and
assign the sub button one second hold as diversity. Frankly to me linking is
not really for any use that I have. When in diversity both VFO's are already
linked and using link where the two VFO's are separated I can see no use for.

Anyway, my .02 worth

I have LINK in use with a 5kc difference between vfo A and vfo B and i am
constantly tuning around looking for dxpeditions who usually run split.
It means for me a quick tap and i am split up 5 in ssb. I then fine tune
when they are calling up 5-10 etc.
Taking it away is simply not fair.
I do not have the 2nd rcvr and i am not interested in diversity.
I dont give a hoot if i am the only one using LINK, the fact remains i do
and i feel i have a right to keep on using it.Captains Call

Jim,

You are mixing 2 completely different items. The decoding of the digital
signals I could care less how that works. I don't use that function. I am
saying that on the P3 screen with the NB on I can see weaker signals than I
can see on the P3SVGA screen. The noise blanker does not work on the P3SVGA
board. I would like to see the NB function with the P3SVGA screen. I also
stated that to read the ad for the P3 it reads that I should expect to see
the same screen on the P3SVGA as I see on the P3. Only with higher
resolution. But that's not true. Since the NB only works on the P3 the
screens are different.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] OT: Ticks, Chiggers and Mosquitoes

2012-04-12 Thread dalej
I have never found a product that contains 100 percent of Deet.

Deet is an effective repellent, I use it all the time while hiking in the woods
and to fend off tics, deer fly and other unsavory critters that insist on
bugging me.

The most Deet I've found is in a 3 M product, at about 25 percent Deet. It had
an oily feel and I don't much care for the odor. I like the Deep Woods off
product at about 15 percent the best. The percent of Deet only means how long
it will last and at 15 percent it will last for several hours. I can check my
repellent vault for exact product name and content of Deet if you want to know.
I use the stuff directly on my skin and clothing.

[Elecraft] ERR VCO E00129 on my new KRX3

2011-11-26 Thread dalej
I finished installing the KRX3 this morning and after setting everything up IAW
p.43 of the manual, I went to calibrate the KSYN3. Everything went along ok
until the end of the calibration and the screen said ERR VCO E 00129. I
performed the calibration three times with the same result. I checked the
cables for continuity and that they are firmly plugged into the correct sockets
but still no joy. So I installed the new KSYN3 in the main rx slot and
proceeded to do the calibration routine again and it failed. The problem
appears to be in the new KSYN3 unless I'm missing something somewhere. I gave
the board a good visual inspection with my jewelers eye-loupe, but did not see
anything obviously wrong with the solder or tracks. I'm guessing maybe one of
those crystals went dead.

I contacted Elecraft support via email, but of course won't hear anything until
next week.

Dual output impedance 5w/10w pa? I don’t understand.

The MOSFET 10-W amp stage includes an output transformer with both 1:4
and 1:1 windings. When using low power, or when running from internal
batteries, the 1:1 winding is used, which optimizes efficiency at
about 5 W, greatly reducing transmit current drain. The 1:4 winding is
used when running higher power (using an external supply).

One email said 10w/100w models. Is that correct?

The 1.5-pound radio itself puts out 10 watts+. We'll also be
 describing a new, high-performance 100-watt+ companion amplifier/ATU
for fixed-station/mobile use. It will work very well with other 5 to
 10-W radios besides the KX3.

[Elecraft] External ALC question

2011-01-01 Thread dalej
The external ALC test procedure P.4 rev B of the K3 external ALC Modification
instructions calls for a 1K to 10K series resistor between the negative and
the K3 ALC pin. Is this resistor also needed when using the ALC with an
amplifier, in my case an Icom PW-1?

Why does it take so long for the K3 power output to build up to full power
after removing the external ALC?

When I set up this test procedure and tested the external ALC it does not
remove all of the power output from the K3, 12 watts still show up on my
Powermaster wattmeter with full ALC applied from the 9 volt battery.

I'm in digest mode so if you me ask a question I might be slow to respond.

effective in user tests. To use APF, make sure CONFIG:DUAL PB

graphic display is used to show that APF is in effect. At the time
APF is activated, the regular I.F. SHIFT setting, if any, is “frozen,”

hear any delay in the voice monitor, set CONFIG:TX MON to FAST.
Note: You’ll still hear the delayed and processed monitor if you
adjust the MIC, CMP, TX EQ or TX GATE settings while transmitting.

Ouch! I just replicated your issue on my K3! Once I tuned the APF
above 1 kHz the crackling begins. During this time the APF function
disappears and with each step on the display a loud CRACK! is heard in
the speaker. Once I tune the APF below 270 Hz the CRACK! goes away and
 the APF is restored.

At 1 kHz I hear a loud POP! and then the CRACK! occurs for each step as
the knob is advanced to the right although the displayed APF frequency
remains at 1 kHz. At 270 Hz I hear a BOOP! and APF is restored. I've
done this several times as I've typed this message. When the APF is in
the crackle mode, turning it off and then on does not change the crackle
state, in fact more crackle is heard upon reactivation. Powering off
the K3 while in crackle mode kills the crackle and APF resumes its
 function.

[Elecraft] P3 seeing my own tx SSB

2010-10-02 Thread dalej
My P3 shows my own SSB transmit waveform, but only if I am doing a screen
capture and transmitting while it's painting the screen on the P3 Mac utility.
After it's done writing it to the computer is when I see my own SSB waveform on
the P3 display. I think it's cool and would like this feature all the time, if
possible.

The P3 has been really working good. I've added some screen capture photos on

I discovered a high noise level coming from the K3 when I key the

the Monitor function. It occurs with/without any headset connected

MIC SEL - High or Low makes no difference; Bias on or off (should be off

hear the noise at a setting of 25. I have set it to On with a setting at
 09

No difference with Pre-Amp or Noise Blank on or off.

I have played around with the MIC and COMP setting with no Mic connected.

I raise the MIC and COMP settings, the noise gets louder.

 MIC - set to 20

 COMP - set to 20

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter question

2010-05-17 Thread dalej
Hi,

I don't post here much so I hope I'm doing this right.

I have a W2 wattmeter coming, it'll be here Friday, it looks to be a
very good value as all Elecraft products are and will match my K3
beautifully. I will have the vhf/uhf sensor along with the HF
sensor. I'm wondering if the vhf/uhf coupler might be useable on 1.2
Ghz? I realize the accuracy won't be too good, but by how much, any
estimates or guess?

Dale k9vuj

P.S. I am very pleased that Elecraft has chosen to support the Apple
computer platform along with Windows and Linux. I have downloaded and
installed the supporting OSX applications for the W2 already.

Loaded 3.59 just now. Radio NZ on 9765, locks on with the K3 at

After this load I thought I had a problem. It ended the download and

loud pop and crackle in the speaker. The S-meter was pegged out. I
shut down the K3 for a few seconds and turned it back on with the same
results. So I turned off the K3 and the power supply for a little
longer then turned it back on, meter still pegged out, after several
seconds or perhaps a minute the meter slowly came back down and I was
receiving Radio NZ. Now everything seems to be ok. I have not tried
transmitting yet.

2009-11-19 Thread dalej
I had the same loud pop and crackle with s-meter pegging out when I
turned on power to the K3 today. It was previously set on Radio NZ
freq and AM sync was enabled when I turned it off this morning before
leaving on a road trip. I re-loaded 3.59 late this afternoon and now
all seems to be ok. I tried turning off the K3, leaving it on AM with
sync enabled and it did not pop and crack plus the S-meter did not peg
out. I must have had a faulty upload the first time. I have to admit
while uploading the firmware I was doing other things on the computer
so maybe it was due to my fiddling. I'll check it out again early in
the morning, but everything seems to be ok now. In fact it appears
the sync is locking faster and more steady now. Keeping fingers
crossed.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.57: Synchronous AM Detection (AM-S); misc. improvements

2009-11-12 Thread dalej
Installed 3.57 this morning. I am listening to Radio Zealand now, at
0945 Z on 9765 Khz. Sync det seems to work very well. I'm trying it
back and forth between AM and AM-S. I am using the VFO tracking and
it locked right on, but my VFO display reads 9.764.991. Perhaps I'll
have to re-check calibration sometime, no biggie here. I like this
sync det. It now makes me wish I had the 15 Khz filter in addition to
my 6 Khz. filter.

Thankyou Elecraft for another flawless upload. Am using the Mac and
that utility which also has been flawless here.

K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.57 (with DSP rev. 2.45) is now
 available.

This revision includes Synchronous AM detection, which has a clear
advantage over the regular AM detector during selective fading. In
this mode, the K3 can optionally track AM stations that may be
slightly mistuned, as you might find in an AM round-table on 75 m.
It's also convenient for automatically zeroing in on AM broadcast
 stations.

There are other considerations when using Synch AM, so you should read
the release notes (below) before trying it. We'll be further refining
our AM-S implementation in a later release, based on your feedback.

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

 * * *

 MCU 3.57 / DSP 2.45, 11-7-2009

 Misc. Improvements:

 * TUNE SWITCH: “Double beep” with NR on eliminated.

 * DATA A: Loss of power when using TUNE corrected.

 New Feature: Synchronous AM Receive

 * SYNCHRONOUS AM: Outperforms regular AM during selective fading.
Provides optional automatic VFO tracking of AM signals up to +/- 2.5
 kHz.

Select AM mode, then hold ALT to select AM-S. The -S icon flashes
 slowly if the signal is noisy. Select AM-S LSB or USB using SHIFT;
one of the two sidebands may reduce QRM. Sync AM also works with
diversity receive. (Note: Some AM broadcast stations encode their
carrier, resulting in a low-pitched noise when Sync AM is turned on.)

With Sync AM you can tune manually, or use automatic VFO tracking:

-- If tuning manually, you need to tune to within +/- 10 Hz of the
 actual
carrier frequency, at which point the K3 will phase-lock to the
 carrier.

-- To enable VFO tracking, tap CWT, which turns on the T icon. Or,
tap SPOT to engage VFO tracking just long enough to lock. When
tracking is on, the VFO may “hunt” slowly across a span of several
 Hz.

IMPORTANT: For AM QSOs, use SPLIT mode when VFO tracking is
turned on. VFO B (TX) will remain fixed while VFO A tracks RX signals.

Limitations: At present, VFO B cannot auto-tune in AM-S. Also, both
VFOs will always be in the same mode (AM-S LSB or USB).

 Remote Control Command Changes:

 * UP0/DN0/UP$0/DN$0 moves VFOs 1 Hz. Similarly, UP8 and UP9
move the VFOs by 100 and 200 Hz, respectively.

I'd like to be able to turn on the monitor without having to adjust

Actually a ten minute countdown timer for we rag chewers would be kind
of nice touch and helps to comply with U.S. FCC regulations for ID
every ten minutes. The other option would be to have a built in CW
IDer that ID's every ten minutes.

Just an idle thought for when the Elecraft team has some spare time on

everything fit perfectly and no missing parts, everything worked as
per the manual, but I have not begun to learn the operation of it yet,
that will come later when I get time and find a clearing on my desktop.

Now I have to connect it up with my Mac computer to download the
latest firmware, it came with v. 1.78. I already downloaded the
latest utility for the Mac. What would be the best, a db9 to db9

Any suggestions would be appreciated, or as before I'll just wing it.

I think I will keep my order for the subreceiver active because I don't want

[Elecraft] Q about the K3 rear panel

2008-01-02 Thread DaleJ

I'm trying to clear up some confusion on my part and maybe I've missed
something in the manual.

I am looking at a picture of the rear panel of the K3 and I see a sub-panel
with rx ant in/out, xvtr in/out and IF out. Are these connectors only
available if the KXV3 is ordered? What about if the sub receiver is ordered
but no KXV3 will it have the rx in/out? It would be helpful if some of this
were made a little more clear in the user manual or web page. What I want
is the sub rx and rx in/out, but I don't need the KXV3 because I don't plan
to use transverters. I do need to be able to connect a separate receiving
antenna to the sub receiver. I also understand that in order to have the IF
out connector I would need to order the KXV3?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or SDR-5000?

2007-12-23 Thread DaleJ

How does the Flex handle image rejection? Any spec's for image rejection?

I think Dave is overstating the computing power you need for a Flex.
Computing power is pretty cheap these days, and getting cheaper all the
time. You may be able to do just fine with the $399 machine he mentions.
In fact, for under $425 you can get a dual-core AMD Athlon X2 4000+ with
1GB DDR2 RAM from BestBuy. That machine will not only run your
 Flex-5000A,
but you will also be able to surf the web, read your email, run your
 contest
logging program all at the same time with plenty of extra processing power
to spare. Really folks, computing power is not an issue these day. In
fact, I would guess that a large percentage of hams already have more than
enough computing power already sitting in the shack.

There continue to be a lot of misconceptions about SDR radios. There is
 an
earlier thread about K3 vs. Flex-5000A in the Elecraft reflector archives
from October 2007. Search 5000A and you should find them. They are
 worth
reading, as they go into some depth about the issues, questions and
 misconceptions that keep coming up.

I think he was looking for an N1MM type band map layed out over a real
time PowerSDR pan adapter display. Which would be downright cool. A
visual representation of the DX/contester's signal and strength.

One thing that might not have been mentioned in the K3/Flex discussion
is the need for a high performance PC. The $399 HP/Dell/Whoever
special at Sam's Club or Costco just won't cut it.

You can already do that with the free contest logging program from N1MM,
you have the band displayed as a slide rule with frequencies and DX
Cluster reported stations, just click on one and the rig tunes to it...

It would be very cool if some future generation of PowerSDR software
 provided
a clickable bandmap overlay to the displayed spectrum from the K3.
Functions such as quick qsy to any point in the spectrum and labeling of
sigs with callsigns would be great tools for dxing/contesting.

Is synchronous detection is enabled?

We've been busy at Elecraft Engineering this week and we have just
placed new K3 firmware on the ftp site.
 MCU: V 1.49
 DSP: V 1.46

 New Features:

Noise Reduction significantly improved. Also, NR can be used with narrow
 filters in CW mode.

AM mode added. (6 kHz Filter required.)

NOTE: AM Power control temporarily works as follows: when you set power
to 100 W in AM mode, it means 100 W *peak power*, and 25 W *carrier
power*. Also, the bar graph shows peak power in AM mode. This will be
corrected later so the display and bar graph both show carrier
power.Manual notch frequency defaults to 2 kHz (originally 200 Hz).

See 'Release Notes' in the K3 Update Utility for a complete revision
 history.

 Enjoy! :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Microphones

2007-12-15 Thread DaleJ

You could make your own using a eight pin receptacle, some cable and a eight
pin plug.

You can find them all here: http://www.therfc.com/micconn.htm

MP8MIL, inline male receptacle I believe would be the one you need along
with the standard mike connector.

The fastest would be to re-wire the Icom mike plug, not the most fun job
either. I don't know of any adapters for the K3.

Is it possible to use an ICOM SM20 with the K3 ?

Looking at the K3 manual the mic socket pinouts are different from the
 SM20
although there is bias available as used in the ICOM electret element.

It seems to me that I will need to rewire the SM20 plug. Is there an Icom
 to
K3 mic adaptor or is there any other way to use the SM20 without rewiring
the plug. I really don't want to sell the SM20 when I come to sell the
 PRO3
 on purchase of the K3.

Seasons greetings and 73 to all.
