Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Results Nov 6, 2016

2016-11-15 Thread Bill Frantz
I have seen activity on frequencies just above the net frequency
of 14,303.5, so ESSB might interfere with those people. Given
how hard it is to pull some net stations out of the noise, most
stations are probably using rather narrow receive bandwidths, so
a full spectrum signal will be cut off by the receivers.

I would stick with communications grade bandwidth.

First, a huge mea culpa to everyone. Normally I would have sent out a
reminder email yesterday about today's net. However, my schedule was such
that I didn't even get in front of the computer yesterday. That said, the
band was totally dead today. I barely heard John, N6JW, for about a minute
before he disappeared into the ether, and I got one other check-in. Here are
today's results:

KM4IK Ian GA K3 281
N6JW John CA K3 936
WV5I Dwayne TX K3 5287

I'm going to put out a request for assistance for next Sunday, 9/27. I've
had a family matter come up that will take me out of town next weekend. I
don't anticipate being home in time to call the net. If there is anyone that
can pick up the reins for me and be net control, I would greatly appreciate
it. Please email me at the address in my signature block, below, if you can
assist.

Have a great week, everyone.

Thanks and 73 de,

Nothing.

14.3035 is a less than great choice of frequency. The maritime nets on
14.300 [there's more than one] firmly believe they own the frequency and
are there daily. They're billed as "maritime emergency nets," although
99% of the checkins are definitely not afloat, and all that I've heard
in several years that are afloat are tied up to a dock somewhere [I
suppose it's possible to sink at a dock]. I sometimes leave 14300 on
when I'm working in the shack.

There was traffic up at 14.305 something.. so I know the antenna was
working.. just not catching Atanta...(I was probably where he was
hitting the ionosphere..)

I haven't ever checked into the SSB net, maybe I will try this Sunday.
I do get into Kevin's CW net on 40 on occasion, but with the untimely
departure of N0SS [SK], Kevin is just too close for 20 and by the 40m
netI'm usually at dinner.

It is common on many nets to call for QRP, Mobiles, etc. I've sort of
equated it to the 2 Silent Periods each hour when maritime comm was CW
[well ... MCW]. I'll see what happens Sun.

As sometime net control when Phil is away, I try to make a point of pausing
and asking specifically for QRP check-ins, and for relays from QRP
check-ins that I can't hear. Unfortunately, band conditions haven't been so
good lately, and QRP signals have been tough to hear. Although I have been
able to catch 2 or 3 KX3 users.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results, September 8

2013-09-13 Thread Lewis Phelps
Two Sundays ago, net control DID create a "quiet time" and asked for QRP
stations only to call.

I have great difficulty checking into the net from my location in Pasadena, CA,
partly because I have a very tall mountain range just out the window, and
between me and Oregon, and partly because my K3-10 is drowned out by stations
with amplifiers.

On this occasion, I was able to check in very easily. So, I concur with those
who have suggested a "low power' segment of the net. Even better, two such
periods would be desirable, the first about five minutes after the net opens,
and about 15 minutes later, to give a second chance for anyone who could't make
it the first time. (Band conditions DO change.)

More active relaying by net participants would also help. On some nets,
stations seem to relay only if asked. On others, they step in to relay if it's
clear that a particular station isn't getting through to NC. It would be nice
if the Elecraft net adopted the latter approach.

One more thingif NC has a beam antenna, he might announce " beaming east,
calls from northeast and northern midwest stations only," etc.

And let's all give three cheers for Phil for the great job he does as NC!

2013-09-13 Thread William C. Johnson
Dave we need to listen better. Also better band conditions would help. I also
have the KX3 and have tried to check in but failed. So I  use my trusty K3.
Phil goes SOTA and makes it with his KX3.

Seriously we need to relay those we hear that are not being heard by net
control. Old established net etiquette.

How
can we as a group increase the results of the Sunday SSB net for those

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results, September 8

2013-09-13 Thread Esquer Dave
Might I suggest (like I think was done in the past) that a few minutes (defined
clearly) are set aside for us QRP KX3 folks to check in?

I am temporarily located in Waikoloa, HI (BK29CW). I can hear the relay from
N6JW in Riverside, CA. and sometimes can directly hear NS7P from Elmira,
Oregon. When net control transfers to Georgia, no way I can do anything from
here.

I am in a condo complex with antenna police chasing me … putting up a tower …
ain't going to happen. My attic is accessible, but the roof above it is
concrete tile. My simple EARC endfed 6-40 half wave dipole
(http://www.earchi.org/92011endfedfiles/Endfed6_40.pdf) running inverted v in a
palm tree tied to my lanai is my present setup.

Respectfully and hopefully, it would be a "challenge" for those running much
more power than I to pull out the "small fry" from the noise during the Sunday
net.

This last Sunday, I think Netcontrol didn't come down anywhere near me.  (The

Just a few hz away there was the marine net on 14.300 that was booming in from
Texas. - NO problem hearing them.. but 14.3035? Nope. Nothing.

There was traffic up at 14.305 something.. so I know the antenna was working..
just not catching Atanta...(I was probably where he was hitting the
ionosphere..)

Only a "short" while ago (the early 1950's) few Hams had mobile rigs.
Virtually everyone on the air was working from a fixed station.

One of the games mobile operators played was to drive over to another Ham's
QTH and shock him with a call from the curb in front of the house,
completely swamping their receiver with a gadzillion dB over S-9 signal.

Of course it only worked once, but was good for a laugh followed by a cup of
coffee or an '807' or two.

My thanks to John N6JW for the relay.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net results (3/17/13)

2013-03-19 Thread Phil Shepard

(Sorry, I am still trying to get used to the iMac's Magic Track Pad. Disregard
what I sent out a short time ago.)

We had a challenging net on Sunday. The ionosphere was very disturbed, and
signals were all over the place, with very significant QSB. With the help of
relays (N6JW, W4RKS and others), we managed to get a pretty good number of
check-ins in the log. Thanks, guys. There were 39 participants over about 30
minutes, including the Elecraft CW Net NCS, Kevin, KD5ONS.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (2/3/13)

2013-02-06 Thread Edward R Cole
I tuned in late 25-min after the hour and heard Phil very weakly and
the station in CA that often assists was also not strong so I decided
not trying to check-in. I usually receive Phil about S7+ on my K3 +
Hygain Th3mk4.

This coming Sunday I will hopefully be chasing 1296 eme signals so
probably not be available to check-in.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (8/5/12)

2012-08-09 Thread Terry Schieler
Hi Joe,

Sorry to hear about the noise level. Can I recommend that you listen to the
net and wait until Phil,NS7P (Net Control) asks if there are any "relays". Put
your call in there. Some of the noise on the frequency will have subsided by
then as, at that point, most all check-ins will have been acknowledged. There
are a lot of helpful guys on the net and someone will definitely help you get
through. Just drop on in!

Terry, W0FM

Bad news / good news.
First the bad - while waiting for my KX3 I sold my other radios and bought a
K3/100 and P3 which I just love - have been trying for the last 4 weeks to
check in on Sunday but noise level here just too high!
(sigh) and bad timing for me for the CW net - will keep trying.
Good news, just received the e-mail from April and my KX3 will ship next week.
Hope to catch you all eventually.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate and have learned from this reflector.

I had intentions of checking it Sunday and monitored the preceding
net, but was called to breakfast about 30-min before net time (10am
local). I got reading the newspaper and missed the net.

I had an interesting contact earlier on 20m with W6SMJ/mobile south
of Visalia, CA coming from the DX Conference. He could hear my 16w
fairly well though QRM finally drown me out (I supposed it was all
those guys with new KPA-500 tuning up!). Conditions seemed real good
at that time. I use a Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi at 50 feet.

It seems to be strongest somewhere in the Tri-state. I auto-notched
it then tried to filter it out with no luck (notch helps but its still
very distinct).

Another note, I don't know about everyone else but 20m at 2PM EDT

During that time I qsy'd up and down to be sure I wasn't missing
anything. My antenna is a vertical and there is a rise in the land to
the west of me. Perhaps the combination cuts me off from the West! I'm
fine into eastern Europe, so I know that my rig's ears are fine.

I'll keep trying.

Sorry Brenden,

For some reason, I thought that you were portable W6. My apologies. I
guess that I have gotten too used to poor propagation and filled in the
blank incorrectly. You had a great signal well off the front of my quad.

Ah, the vagaries of propagation! I tuned in to check into the net but I
could barely hear net control deep in the noise, and few of the responding

checked in and 80 miles north of he other, but I might as well have been on

Hi Lew. All bands and nets suffered from low propagation at this QTH
(Oceanside, CA) yesterday. I've noticed though that when Phil points his
quad south, the situation improves. Maybe your location offers a similar
challenge. With the propagation situation it's hard to differentiate between
long period QSB and antenna rotation. In which case, I had a tendency to
move on. But lately I have been able to wait and catch Phil's signal when he
swings south.

The CW nets also were too noisy for me to use, but then again I have a
stealth wire antenna. Also, I doubt that Kevin can rotate his 40 M ant! Hi.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (1/10/2010)

2010-01-11 Thread Terry Schieler
Miserable. I too was blanked in my attempts to check in from Missouri
yesterday. Could not hear net control at all or most other stations on
frequency either. Two stations I heard booming in I asked for help with a
relay and received no response. I figured the net wrapped up quickly and
was surprised to see this week's list of 40 some odd operators checked in.

Nice to see the list grow, even if I can't hear them. Next week!

73,

Terry, W0FM

--___

Propagation was tough in Massachusetts. I couldn't hear net control at
all, and requested a relay to the net at large several times but no-one
responded. Oh well, I'll try again next week!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (1-3-10)

2010-01-03 Thread srife
My SteppIR was lowered down to 15 feet, pointing north and I was
running 100 watts Phil. That's why someone took pity on me and relayed for
me. My K3 is on the bench awaiting parts and the fabled DSP upgrade board.
It was nice using the K2 for a change.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (12-20-09)

2009-12-21 Thread Dave, W8OV
Phil, the Reflector is getting out of control. While waiting for the
SSB net to begin I began reading mail on the Reflector. When I next
looked at the time, and listened, the net was over. I need a Q-signal
for Reflector interference, say QRI, perhaps.

Sorry I didn't make it,

Dave, W8OV

2009-11-20 Thread Phil and Christina
When we have an east coast US station with a potent signal/good antennas, we
can try having them listen for your area. That might help you check in, but
you probably won't hear most of the net. Somewhat Like Peter, ZL1PWD, who
checks in sometimes.

Hi Kevin,
Yesterday W2 on 20m was 59+ on my area, 18:25GMT.
No directional antenna on my side due to local constraints, only a 40m

Hello Philippe,
There is an archive of old Elecraft Reflector email. I am sure
there is someone out there who can help you find the Iraq Elecraft Net
listing. I am unsure of how long ago it was but at least three or four
years ago.
Congratulations on your new radio. I am sure you will have fun with
it. From UAE you should be able to find a lot of nice DX unavailable to
me at this current point in our sunspot cycle. I have this really big
ocean to my west and south which cuts down on contacts quite a bit. If
we could make it a little narrower I could hit further into Asia more
easily.

I'm a brand new one Elecrafter and received my K3 last Tuesday.
Only Elecraft company knows where K rigs have been solded to world wide

Am I the only Elecrafter in UAE ? I hope not Hi !
I will check tomorrow at the Emirates Amateur Radio Society (A62ER)
and will send a request on their website.

You've just learned me was an Elecraft net originating from Iraq, is it

The Elecraft net is also an useful tool to discover other Elecrafters

Hope to contact you as well

There was an Elecraft Net originating from Iraq at one point. You may wish to
inquire about that or simply start your own.

Following the pattern use by the Icom net, which has for many years been
on or around the same frequency at 1700 UTC all year 'round, the
Elecraft net holds to the 1800 UTC start time, so adjustment of local
time is needed in all but a few locales that don't honor Daylight Saving
Time.

I tried to log into the net, but propagation was terrible up here near
Cape Cod. I would hear an occasional voice surface through the noise
and don't know if anyone heard me calling.

Now that we are into EST rather than EDT there's more of a chance that
I'll be available to join the net.

Hope to QSO with you guys soon!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-27-09)

2009-09-29 Thread Phil and Christina
The group on 14.316 before our net time is always nice and leaves the
frequency by 1800Z. One of the regulars there, KA7GKN, helps keep that
happening. A very courteous operator.

Since 14316 is the 4th harmonic of the 3579 TV color burst frequency, I
think that it makes sense to move from that spot to 14314, which appears to
have fewer issues.

I didn't hear any noise on 316 today with my beam pointed NW from here in
AZ. Just a group of guys who were operating there and they even mentioned
that the Elecraft net would be starting shortly and that they wanted to be
off the frequency by net start time. Very nice of them but then again they
were Canadians and they are known for their courtesy. At least the ones i

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-27-09)

2009-09-28 Thread Telegrapher

I didn't hear any noise on 316 today with my beam pointed NW from here in AZ.
Just a group of guys who were operating there and they even mentioned that
the Elecraft net would be starting shortly and that they wanted to be off the
frequency by net start time. Very nice of them but then again they were
Canadians and they are known for their courtesy. At least the ones i know.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-27-09)

2009-09-27 Thread Jim Wiley

The "QRM" on 14.316 is unlikely to go away, ever. This is the 4th
harmonic of 3.579 MHz, the TV color burst frequency, and a popular
choice for oscillators in all sorts of consumer and office devices (not
necessarily TV receivers). This has been a problem on 20 meters for at
least 30 years that I know of, perhaps longer. Also, because many
devices that use this frequency derive it from a square-wave oscillator
(a couple of gates). the harmonics of these devices are often
prodigious. Another considerations is that because some designs need
to have this frequency only approximately correct, it is no surprise to
find some units running up to a few hundred Hertz plus or minus from
3.579, and thus (after multiplication by harmonics) hams end up with a
broad band of QRM that can be 2 or 3 kHz from 14.316, or anywhere in
between.

Are all these sources "illegal", and thus covered by part 15 rules?
Yes, they are. This is part of what manufacturers "certify" on those
Part 15 labels you see on so many items of consumer electronics.
Technically, the owner of the device is at fault, and could be made to
cease and desist using the offending item. However, then we have the
real world. Identifying, finding and fixing what could be several dozen
such sources in your immediate vicinity can be and for practical
purposes is an unsurmountable problem. The FCC literally cannot help
you here, as much as they might want to. They have neither the budget or
time to solve literally tens or even hundreds of millions (no
exaggeration here!) of these cases. Pandora is well and truly out of
the box on this one.

I would respectfully suggest a permanent change of net frequency to
something less likely to have this problem.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (9-13-09)

2009-09-14 Thread Oliver Johns
Dear Phil,

Tried to join the SSB net Sunday morning PDT. Couldn't even hear NC.
Just noise.

Two problems: First, there seems to be a carrier just above 14.316
that's there week after week. (At least here on the CA coast.) I
wonder if something could be done about the carrier, say moving the
net to 14.314. I can null it out, but can't afford the loss of signal
that entails.

Second, I have S8-9 RFI noise here in urban San Francisco on 20
meters. The RFI is my problem, of course. Very frustrating. I'm
working on a loop receiving antenna. Stay tuned.

I wonder if maybe the net could be moved to 40 meters until the MUF
increases? Or maybe two nets, one on 20 and one on 40 like the CW
nets do?

We had a short and sparse SSB net again today (1800Z) on 14.316 MHz. The
signal levels were down, and not very many stations were heard. We had only
13
participants including net control and ran for only 18 minutes. Attribute
that to the holiday and very weak conditions. Discussions were on AGC
settings, Visalia rumors and filter offset impact to audio quality.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (3/1/09)

2009-03-01 Thread Phil and Christina
Sam and others,

Sorry to those who tried but were unable to check in. We may need a more
systematic relay approach to help us through the strange differential
propagation conditions we are experiencing. Some hear others well and some
don't. I will be looking at a second antenna here (maybe just for receive,
maybe both). Keep trying. If anyone who hears most stations wants to stick
around for the entire net to help relay in others, that would be great.
Thanks,

We had another good SSB net today (1800Z) on 14.316 MHz. We had 24
participants today, and there were a
number of good questions and comments. The topics discussed included
compression settings and voice quality,
optimized RX EQ settings, ATU functions and other issues. Several stations
got real time feedback on voice quality
that helped them set their compression levels. Conditions were not great,
with many stations being weaker to net control than usual; and several
stations reported hearing few participants.
On the other hand, we had two check-ins from Alaska this week (one was even
