[Elecraft] TX/RX on vfo B with SUB rx?
Is it possible to use vfo B to set both the tx and rx freq? Re: [Elecraft] K3 ALS 600
the K3 is also good in that you can select the power output to be band specific. (under CONFIG). So if your amp needs 50w on 15 and 35w on 80, set it once and don't worry about it anymore. You're doing it right. Modern power amps do not need ALC except as belt and suspenders protection when something goes wrong (by modern, I mean those made in the last 30 years). The right way to drive a power amp is to control output by setting drive level from the transceiver (in this case, the K3) AND carefully tune the power amp for maximum output as read on a meter in line with the antenna. The combination of these actions minimizes distortion products from the power amp. Setting the transceiver to more than the needed drive power and depending on ALC to reduce the drive often causes the amp to be overdriven, so it produces distortion (splatter, harmonics). A couple of times during the CQ160 contest, I would lose rx audio on the main rx. The subrx was unaffected. Since I had a LPPan panadapter hooked up I could tell that it wasn't just the audio output as the panadapter display was also clear of signals. [Elecraft] txinh timing
some have asked about the timing of the onset of carrier (rather than full power output) and the rise time of the carrier after release of TxInh. There is a bit of jitter in the onset of carrier that changes the onset from about 2.5 ms to 4 ms. Rise time to 100% is about 5 ms. (wish I had one of the neat digital storage scopes so I could just read these numbers with the markers instead of squinting at a picture). Re: [Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO
I may just have been lucky so far, but with a DEM 6M preamp and converted SB220, everyone has been getting along with the default 8ms delay in the K3 and a stock SB220 relay. Be aware that relay switching speeds are specified without a snubber diode connected. Adding the diode can greatly extend the release time of a relay. With the limited testing I have done, it seems not all relays act in the same way (i.e. some go much slower, others not so much). In the Dow-key design guide they indicate A transient suppression diode across the actuating coil can increase the release time of an electromechanical switch by as much as 100 times. There are ways around this with the use of zeners instead of just a diode. With E skip season approaching I thought that I would try to resolve this problem and get rid of the extra RF plumbing. My initial thought was the TR relay in the amp might be too slow and RF was being reflected back into the K3 during the transition from TX to RX. After looking at the K3 block diagram I doubt that this is the case as the PR-6 should be switched out of the circuit well before any RF is present at the output. For reference the TR relays in the amp are spec'ed at 8 msec to switch and the K3 is set at 8 msec TX delay, which I believe is the default. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?
I've been real happy with the MH Station Master. It's go enough outputs to control bandpass filters for SO2R as well as doing the normal antenna selection duties. You can select more than one output for a given selection so you can do binary encoding to your relays and save on wires if you need to. It also allows you do reconfigure on the fly rather than making up new diode matrixes like I used to do. A bit of a learning curve, but then again what doesn't have one anymore? I am an avid contester and it is great to have one less thing to remember on a band change. 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RCS-12-or-Station-Master-for-K3-tp7556171p7556199.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Listening on k3 subreceiver while transmitting
The possibility of duplex operation comes up from time to time, dating back to Wayne's email in 2009 (copied below) indicating it 'could be possible' on different bands using the sub-rx. The last update (also below, from 2/12) was that there was of yet no progress. Maybe with the KAT500, KX3 releases the Elecraft guys may be looking for something different to work on and pick this??? This is also of interest to the satellite guys too of course. There were some independent measurements of isolation that were copied to the reflector that seemed to show the isolation may be robust enough to hold out hope. [Elecraft] K3 power output problems
On a new to me K3, I am having problems with power output below 15M. For example the power output on 80 maxed out at 30 watts. (good swr etc., no alarms, voltage input is good etc.). So figured it was a TX gain issue so set up recalibrate it. If I then transmit manually, the SWR indicated is 1:1 and I can adjust power up to the same 30W indicated previously. So, the TX calibrate complains of high SWR, but manually cannot replicate it. one more bit of info. If I use the tuner into 50 ohms it finds a match but when I manually transmit the swr through the tuner is high, for example 4.4:1 on 40. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power output problems
thanks for the suggestion John. I tried it but it didn't allow calibration to occur. However I noticed that after the ATU tuned the 50 ohm load the rig showed high SWR (4.1:1 or so) when I manually keyed it. Also on the bands the power output it good, the Current drawn is shown as 2.3 Amps, which would be pretty spectacular. I did confirm the ~100W output power on a W2 wattmeter. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power output problems (partially fixed!)
As an update, (for all those following this thread with bated breath) It looks like the problem of being unable to get full power out on the bands below 17M, and the inability to do a TXGain calibration, was due to some issue with the configuration of the ATU. I set ATU to not installed and then back to installed and power output came back up. In addition when the ATU is enabled and used to tune the 50 ohm load, the SWR after tuning is 1:1. (those who are following this will remember that originally tuning made the SWR worse). My idea of a loose connection appears to be wrong. Now, the remaining problem is that the Current Display does not indicate the current actually drawn. The display 'saturates' somewhere around 3 amps or so. (It appears to read sensibly up to that level, and then flattens out as power is turned up). I'll ask Elecraft Tech support for guidance on this one I'm hoping to use the rig in the upcoming CQWW, so if there anything amiss, it's sure to show up then. At the upper right-rear corner of the K3 there is a 2D connector, a long screw and a standoff is fastened to the threads of that long screw. The tightness of that standoff is important to the ground path to the antenna connectors. See page 22 of the K3 Assembly manual. To tighten the standoff, you will have to first loosen the screw that goes into the inside end of that standoff, then tighten the standoff with pliers (or better yet, a 3/16 inch wrench). Once you have tightened the standoff against the 2D connector, you can tighten the screw again. That slender pillar is the main return path for an ampere or more of RF current flowing between the KAT3 board and the rear panel sockets. As someone whose design instincts were developed at VHF, where all RF ground paths must be short, broad and direct, I didn't feel comfortable about that corner of the K3. Yes, we know that it works and it's good enough for HF. But in these days of compulsory EMC testing and microscopically detailed product reviews, even HF designers are coming to realise that bending the rules for good RF grounding will eat into the margins of performance, spurious signal rejection and stability. RF grounding of the KAT3 board is also far too dependent on the tightness of the screws at each end of the pillar and the cleanness of all the contact surfaces. That ground return path can be much improved by connecting the mounting screw of J1 directly to the corner of the KAT3 board, using two solder tags that are overlapped and soldered directly together. My K3 doesn't necessarily work any better, but it does satisfy the instincts of an old VHF hound :-) -- 73 from Ian GM3SEK http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I am getting used to my new KX3 and have what look like bugs to me. Using the latest software 1.23/.99 AFSK A is supposed to be LSB (and actually indicates LSB on the screen) but when decoding the audio with a sound card based decoder I must invert the tones to get good decoding. IN RXSBNL instructions In the optional enhancement section, for rx shift = 8 it indicates that FL1 will be flashing but then in the next section says Make sure FL3 is still selected shouldn't this be FL1 since we are offset? [Elecraft] KX3 in WAE RTTY
I used my new KX3 (SN 2282) in the recent WAE RTTY test as part of an SO3R setup with 2 K3s, and wanted to record my impressions. The KX3 at 5W was driving an amp to 100 watts, and contributed 298 q's to my total. The KX3 had the per band sideband nulling and the roofing filter. I took the headphone output and ran it through transformers, one channel directly to the computer sound card, and the other through a separate audio amp, to my headphones. This way, the decoder audio could be at a fixed level but still allow me to use the external amp to adjust the headphone level. The KX3 was set for AFSK A and of course I used AFSK from the sound card, which was also transformer isolated, and run to the MIC input. RX I/Q was run into another sound card to provide a spectral display using CW Skimmer (yes I know it doesn't decode RTTY, but I just like the way it looks). AFSK A uses a center frequency of 1Khz, which is good since I used high tones on the other two rigs, and it helps me to discriminate between what's going on between the rigs. Now AFSK A purports to use LSB, but is actually inverted, so I had to use the REV setting on MMTTY to get things to work. (this is on the list at Elecraft). It also meant manual fine tuning by ear or scope was reversed. Also AFSK A only allows the twin peaking filter, which I found I really don't like in a contest. Band noise is peaked up at the tone frequencies and I found that that made it harder to tell when a weak station was calling on a noisy band. I used MMTTY in non AFC mode, and found that the tuning was more touchy. 2-Tone, running in it's native AFC and AGC mode was better at decoding. Also in AFSK mode, it's necessary to set an offset in the N1MM logging software to get the frequency to net up with FSK packet spots. As others have noted, having a band scope is a great thing, and with the KX3 is pretty easy to implement. However, I found that with all the extra stuff in the shack going, the 'zero freq' portion of the display got what seemed to be progressively noisier. I did have transformer isolation on the I/Q output but more attention is needed. I also saw that on 40M, where my antenna is uncomfortably close to the house, that there was noise induced on the I/Q output. I don't think this was radiated on the transmitter, but will need to investigate more. I did not use the 8Khz offset in the KX3 to move the noise from 0 since I wanted the roofing filter action for the contest congestion. Also the image rejection of CW Skimmer degraded significantly during the contest. I think this was because I left the it in learn mode, and it was learning from the transmit signal sent out over the RX I/Q as well as very strong local signals (including my own 40M harmonic as heard on 20M). Turning off learning mode would help this I'm sure. I had a fan blowing on the back of the kx3, and PA temperature rise was minimal, toping out in the mid 40's, even with the extended duty cycle of exchanging QTCs. As others have noted, the KX3 should be mounted securely or it wants to wander off when pressing buttons. So how's it compare to a K3? I/O is limited (no separate fixed audio out, FSK in, or band outputs) RIT is harder to use (and reset) And if the rig isn't mounted well, it moves when you hit the buttons. Fewer options for center frequency setting In AFSK A, only twin peaking filter available No FSK transmit No fixed audio output No band dependent power out setting (my amp was pretty flat so not an issue for me) I don’t think I missed any contacts due to using the KX3 vs. a K3. The limiting factor on receive was more the clicks and splatter from other stations rather than any receiver performance. I do think the K3 is better, but not by leaps and bounds. Hi SIG detect seems to be more sensitive to an on frequency signal, rather than the K3 responding to on/off frequency signals equally. Wishes Add FSK transmit (Elecraft says the I/O is wrong to allow this) Allow other rx filtering selections Fix the sideband selection in AFSK A Mute the RX I/Q output on TX SO not bad for a 2 pound trail ready radio! How is PA overtemp/current displayed on the K3? During the WAE rtty contest at least twice I noticed that the rig was in TX, but there was no power output. I did not see any warning message on the rig's display. Next time called upon transmit was fine. However, later on I did get an unsolicited shut down on the same rig. PA temperatures did make it into the low 50's sending QTCs. When a fault occurs, to the point of shutting off output power, is the fault display fleeting enough that I could have missed it? [Elecraft] 2b. Re: sub rx on during transmit?
I believe the operation describe is possible now. You can receive on another band with the sub rx, with both receivers muted during transmit. I also listen for 6M openings while working on the HF bands. Of course you should use the AUX antenna port connected to a 6M antenna for the subrx. Your external antenna switching would then be responsible to connect the 6M antenna to the main antenna port if you choose to transmit on 6. What I am hoping for is the ability to tune the subrx (on either the same or other band) while transmitting, I realize I will need to watch the isolation between the antennas, but if the radio itself would handle this, I could use the sub rx to tune the band for other stations while I am transmitting. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500 (now FSK tone imbalance)
I was also one of the 'unequal fsk tone' reporters. However, with the arrival of a W2 I also confirmed that the two tones are set to the same level as determined by measuring each tone separately (and statically). Therefore I've concluded the flickering power output when running diddles on rtty must be caused by transients in the tone to tone switching (ie non zero crossing switching or the like) Mark n2qt -Original Message- From: Ken K3IU Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2012 2:18 PM To: Brian Alsop ; Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500 Hi Brian: Just want to give you a datapoint regarding your comment about different power output for the 2 FSK frequencies. I wonder if Elecraft has built in time constants to confirm to the old FCC specs for meters which are intended to read PEP power? [Elecraft] K3 LONG delay in TX after TXINH removed
I have TXinh sent to my K3 to ensure it doesn't transmit during initial keying or during antenna relay switching. In my setup TXINH is removed about 8 ms after the K3 is keyed. However, it looks like it takes the k3 about 450 ms or so after TXINH is removed for the k3 to make power output. This of course really messes up my cw output as it kills the first character. It also occurs with manual Tune from the front panel or with other modes, so not just on CW. I don't see menu items that would cause this. Anyone else seeing this? I 'think' this used to work, but I haven't tried old firmware to verify if my memory is correct. Since the 160 contest is tonight, I'll just pull the TXinh and live on the edge. [Elecraft] K3 LONG delay in TX after TXINH removed (solved)
My TxInh circuit diode or'd various inputs together. What I did not do is put a resistor to ground after the diodes. The K3 TxInh input does not have a pull down, and has a high enough impedance that there is an appreciable time delay before the TxInh coasts down to where it allows the K3 to transmit. Adding the resistor makes everything ok again... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Reduced BW FSK
I had missed that this wasn’t discussed on this reflector, so first a little history At the end of December, on the RTTY reflector, Andy K0SM/2 produced measurements showing that the use of FSK, which had been the ‘gold standard’ for generating RTTY was actually not as spectrally efficient as correctly adjusted, shaped AFSK generated RTTY. This was shown in his write-up posted at http://www.frontiernet.net/~aflowers/k3rtty/k3rtty.html Note that this does NOT indicate that there was any sort of problem with the K3, just that there was a chance to be better. Other manufacturers also have this same chance to improve. A little later, Ed, W0YK, also known as P49X in many contests, announced that he had successfully used experimental DSP firmware from Elecraft in the BARTG rtty contest. “The K3 DSP firmware engineer coded a wave-shaping filter that narrows the transmit bandwidth similar to what their AFSK filter provides. The resulting spectrum image looks like the better, i.e., narrowest, of the images in K0SM's recent work.” Elecraft then allowed Ed to share this firmware with others who were interested in trying it, which is how I got it. As anyone who was in the WPX RTTY contest this past weekend knows, anything that can help reduce the unnecessary interference from overly wide transmissions is more than welcome. It is great that Elecraft has reacted so quickly to this opportunity. (Would we expect anything less from these guys??) [Elecraft] K3 false SWR indication with SSB
My k3 flashes a higher swr indication with ssb voice peaks than with a steady carrier. If using an antenna with 1:1 SWR the bar graph flashes the first segment. If swr is 1.5:1 all the segments illuminate on voice peaks, as if swr was greater than 3:1. To reduce the uncertainty introduced by my antennas, I connected a 50 ohm load after an external tuner so I could create the 1.5:1 SWR, and got the same results. I assume this is a benign problem and likely caused by the non simultaneous sampling of FWD and REV power by the CPU. However, if no one else sees this I'll do some more checking. [Elecraft] CR/LF, SP, or something better for RTTY
After the discussion here and on the RTTY reflector I checked with AA5AU and W0YK (aka P49X) as they are the go to guys for anything related to rtty contesting. Here's what they said: AA5AU CR/LF before and space after W0YK CR/LF before and space after (there are some building block macros that don't have the leading CR/LF as they need to seemlessly stack) VE3NEA, who is the author of RTTYSKimmer came up with another possibility with a dynamic way of freezing the data input window based on the mouse movement. He has a demo of this approach as well as its source code. This program simulates an RTTY client program that prints received characters and allows you to click on the words in the scrolling window. To see this in action, please download the freezer demo from (http://www.dxatlas.com/private/freezer.zip) extract Freezer.exe from the zip file, and play with it. While it doesn't have real callsigns you can quickly get the sense of how it operates. If this gets picked up by the various contest logging programs, it is maybe a way to make the discussion of cr/lf moot. Re: [Elecraft] Windows 8.1 tablet power
Actually the issue is the tablet is able to supply power to external devices, which must be disabled when the unit is being charged from an external source. Best I can tell in some devices The direction of power is either negotiated by a digital message upon connection of an external device or by shorting or opening the data lines when the unit is to be charged. It looks like Dell tablets can operate with specific adapters but there is no guarantee this would work on another brand (and lots of review comments saying it doesn't). [Elecraft] Danger of uncommanded PWR off?
Is there much danger of issues caused by just turning off its power supply rather than doing a commanded off for a K3? I’m looking at remotely operating an unattended k3. Mark. Re: [Elecraft] Danger of uncommanded PWR off?
Thanks Bill, I’d not thought of using the Elecraft Utility. That’ll work for me Mark. [Elecraft] K3 circuit breaker
My K3, SN 3091 has popped the 12v circuit breaker. After resetting the breaker everything works well, full power out with about 16A draw at 14Vdc. It has done this twice in the last week. I have been working remotely so not present to see if any other indications of a fault. Has happened on 40M (which has an external antenna tuner) and 20M which has a resonant antenna. Suggestions?
