Exchange and various things about it..
Hi all, Just a few questions that I have.. Would appreciate input :-) Firstly, is it unusual for the Exchange server to keep looking at the floppy drive? A few of the servers here do - and it's only since installing Exchange 2k. Seems to be only once every 5 minutes or so, and I can only imagine it's just looking around for something it can't find or perhaps something it would like to find. Secondly, during the weekend the server just stopped responding. Exchange was allowing me to work from two machines in the house, but when I tried to log in from one of the other 8, it failed. NT would not allow me in for a start, then when it got past that problem (Trying to find the profile on the server) Exchange wanted verification of my user/pass/domain. It refused to let me in even then. A couple of reboots and all was well, but it caused some concern. Does this happen to anyone else? Thanks in advance, Joe! _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Exchange prompts for authentication every 10 minutes
We had a similar problem - traced it to the offline folders, just delete those and re-create and the problem went away. For us it started after we moved people from one server to another. HTH Keith -Original Message- From: Chris T Haaker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 26 October 2001 19:05 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange prompts for authentication every 10 minutes this is weird. NT 4 domain. 1 pdc, and 2 bdc's, one bdc is remote across 256k pipe. Exchange 5.5, SP4, 3 different servers with mailboxes in same site. None are DC's. Started happening about two weeks ago. I thought it was only happening to Office XP users, but know it is happening regularly to about 30 out of 500 mailboxes. About every 10 minutes (even though logged into the domain, about 20 on the LAN, 10 through dial-up) the Exchange server pops up the username/password/domain authentication box. No matter what you enter your password is wrong. Happened to me the first time right after I changed my password so I thought it was a domain sync issue. Doing that didnt help. You can hit cancel and go about your merry way without being denied access, but it is a pain in the @ss . . . Any ideas? We are a small dept within the University - approx 100 users, NT4 Server and Exchange 5.5 with latest service packs and patches, the user's workstations are running Win98 and Outlook 2000. Recently our HOD has had problems sending email to users within the University, all other email functions seem to be ok for him, sending mail to users in our dept and outside the Uni is ok, he can receive email from within the Uni but can't send or reply to these addresses, he can send/reply to addresses outside the Uni and within the dept. This problem started for him about 2 weeks ago and I can't figure out what's causing it. No one else is affected, our other users can send and receive ok anywhere. I setup a profile for HOD on another computer but the results were the same, I thought it may be something to do with his profile on exchange server so after backing up I deleted all reference to him from NT and Exchange, about an hour later I setup his NT account using the copy function in user manager to copy an existing account and then setup his email account and imported the mail but still the problem persists. I believe that your HOD is being blocked somewhere externally (as the message is going through the IMS). It looks as though his address is blocked by your main servers (I assume that you route all other non-departmental mail through to a central system). Llewelyn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 29, 2001 5:11 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange and various things about it.. OWA 2000 logoff ?
In OWA2000 there are three ways you get logged off. One is to close the browser which closes the session and clears any cached authenticated pages so no one else can use your session. Two is to wait for 4 minutes (Default timeout setting for OWA2000). Or spend a bunch off money for Messageware's solution which gives you a logoff button. Question is that a customer would like to have it so if he is browsing the web and then backspaces to the OWA2000 session (within the 4 minute timeout setting) he is forced to login again. I said I do not think there is a way around the logoff procedures other than the above ones. I was curious if SSL was installed if it changes/overrides the timeout settings. I do not really want to setup up SSL at this time as we may change the name of the server prior to cut over. Anybody have any experience with SSL and OWA2000 and logoff issues different than normal sessions? _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ah yes, the ability of a governmental body to recognize something as legitimate just because there are enough ignorant/stupid/silly/mischievous people that can write something on a form. Of course, on a list that normally contains a lot of off topic eMail, at least most of it tries to tie it back to something eMail/Exchange related. How about next time you start the thread off with something like I have lots of silly users that are circulating an eMail about writing in Jedi knight as a religion because we have lots of dolts in the UK government [1] that will actually believe them. Anti-virus scanner
Dear Anyone, We have a dedicated Connector server (Exchange 5.5 SP2) set up which connects an Exchange 5.5 environment to a Lotus Notes environment. This server only houses a X400 Connector and a Connector for Lotus Notes (so no Mailboxes). I know there isnt an anti-virus package that can scan X400 connectors on Exchange 5.5 yet. Is there an anti-virus scanning product for the Connector for Lotus Notes on Exchange 5.5? (I have my doubts) Any help would be appreciated. EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?
Our exchange 5.5 server with sp4 installed just froze up. It was not responding to outlook clients and the cursor was not responsive. I had to resort to the reset button to restart it. Is is possible that a malformed mail message could have caused this? Is there a post SP4 patch that might help? This server has never locked up like this in the last 2 years, and nothing has changed recently. Secret Cabal mailing list
Okay Dean, I've sent out invitations for the new Secret Cabal mailing list [1] to everyone that we identified and voted on. You should start seeing the Join submissions very soon. Remember we need to make sure that all new members understand that this list must remain a secret and it's subscription mailing address is never revealed. As instructed, I'm having them send a message with the text Join Secret-Cabal Name to [EMAIL PROTECTED] [1] As opposed to the Old Secret Cabal mailing list, which of course I disavow all knowledge and refute the actual existence thereof. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Event 9582
Hello all, I have run into the event entry below twice in the past month on two different servers. Everything I find on this is specific to clusters and I am not running any clusters. Q296073 states The event ID 9582 referenced in this article is only a concern for Active/Active cluster configurations. In Active/Passive configuration and non-clustered Exchange 2000 Servers this event ID 9582 can be ignored.. I would like to believe that and move on but in both situations that I've seen this my Exchange servers have stopped allowing users to login within 24 hours of the event. Has anyone else seen this? RE: alternate recipient + delivery to email domain
I think you answered your own question: we do not use DNS nor Hosts entry for @x2.abc.com as we just indicate the IP of that host in the forward all messages to this domain..that Hosts receives messages just from us so they do not have any presence on the internet...other than its IP address If the host is not registered in dns then the mail will bounceback immediately. If there is a record in dns for the host yet the host is down, exchange will retry transmit of message (host is down or unreachable). If the domain is registered yet authorative nameservers are not available, exchange will retry until nameservers become available or until the retry period is over (network error during host resolution). -Original Message- From: Romero, Eric [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2001 10:09 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: alternate recipient + delivery to email domain Hi all MSX5.5+SP4. we have some mailboxes that use delivery to alternate recipient the alternate recipient is @x2.abc.com also we have insructed the IMC through connections\specify by email the x2.abc.com and forward all messages to this domain to the IP of that host. all works fine when that Host is on. problem is that when they turn the server off, we start getting error 3010/3011/4031 and messages bounce back to the sender. RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?
If there's no indication of problems with the disk, try checking the transaction logs to see if a large number of logs were generated in a short period of time corresponding to the hang. I've seen instances where 5.5 SP4 servers become unresponsive to clients as a result of someone attempting to send a *huge* attachment (500Mb+) and it bogged down the server. If this does prove to be the case then consider implementing internal message size limits. RE: OWA 2000 logoff ?
OWA without SSL = BAD... You can register the SSL cert under a generic name instead of the actual server name, that way, it doesn't matter wether you are going to change the server name later or not. Andrew, MCSE (NT W2K) + CCNA -Original Message- From: Tony Hlabse [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Monday, October 29, 2001 8:05 AM Posted To: NewsgroupDiscussion Conversation: OWA 2000 logoff ? Subject: OWA 2000 logoff ? Mailbox limit
I'm about to set up a limit for my users for their mailboxes. I want to edit the system administrator message that gets sent out. Is this possible? First Time Setup
I moved from a IMAP/SMTP mail server to using Exchange 2K and I have some general questions about the setup and configuration. I have a small home network with 5 servers and a few clients. 1. I want to connect to the Exchange server through my NAT router. I read that I need to setup static ports for Exchange to use since it randomly selects ports once the client connects through port 135. Has anyone done this? Are there any issues with this? 2. I did not have ADS setup so I built a new box to start the AD and to install Exchange on it since it required AD. Can I keep the Exchange server on the Domain Controller of the AD or will this cause issues such as too much overhead? If there is an issue, can I set up another box as the exchange server and them copy everything over to the new box? How would I do that? 3. Is there tips and tricks for a home network? I can only forsee 5 to 10 users total. Its mostly setup to do development for Outlook forms and what not for clients and to provide email for the family. Missing email messages
This may not be strictly an Exchange Server question, but I am interested in how a message can fail to be delivered and no error message is received by the sender. We run ES 5.5 SP4 on NT4.0 SP6. There have been no recent configuration changes apart from the installation of SP4. The system has been up and running satisfactorily for 2 years or more now. I had been advised that email had been sent to us and had not arrived, and no non-delivery report has been received by the sender. On Saturday last, the problem occurred to me while I was sending messages to the site from another internet mail account hosted at another ISP. Three emails were sent within a few minutes of each other, the first and third arriving correctly and speedily. The second did not arrive, and no non-delivery report has yet been received (now 2 days later). The first and third messages were to individual recipients at the site, the second message was to multiple recipients at the same site. Any thoughts would be most welcome. RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?
I suggest, as have others, that you look at a possible hard disk failure. The only time I have experienced this situation is following a scsi disk failure. On first reset the disk showed up as failed, a power cycle luckily got it started. It has now been replaced. It was not responding to outlook clients and the cursor was not responsive. I had to resort to the reset button to restart it. Is is possible that a malformed mail message could have caused this? Is there a post SP4 patch that might help? This server has never locked up like this in the last 2 years, and nothing has changed recently. RE: First Time Setup
Mike, 1. The static ports are only if you want to connect to it from the Internet. Since you also have your Exchange server configured as DC for your AD, it won't be wise to open up access to it from the Internet. Why not deploy a VPN solution for Internet access? 2. With 10 users the overhead shouldn't be a big issue. The reason why you'd want to move it is to avoid putting all the eggs in one basket.
