Hi all,

New to the group however I've been watching for some time.

This is in no way a flame posting, however I seek information regarding
the clustering of Exchange 2000 servers.

Could anyone point out any good reference points - be they web or book?
I've searched high and low on various search engines but just get sites
full of mumbo-jumbo that is not relevant.

Regards,

Joe

RE: How to break Exchange in the Lab [Was: NTBackup]

2001-10-29 Thread Mark Harford

Another good one is to let your IS and/or logfile space run out very rapidly
from a mail loop (use blat or the reskit simulation tools for the loop).
See if you really can get that server back up and running with some extra
disks within your SLA period the mail loop cleared up before it goes down
again!

Thanks to everyone and MSKB[1], I now have backups that I KNOW are good.

Next step now, is to learn how to fix Exchange. I know there are a few
million ways to break Exchange, but what would be the best for learning the
repair tools in a lab environment?

The hardware stuff 'should' be straight-forward. Break it - ID it - Repair/
Replace/ Restore - Reboot. The software and DB corruption would need to be
more careful to avoid getting into a 'Restore is only option' situation.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Exchange and various things about it..

2001-10-29 Thread Joe D. Llewelyn

Hi all,

Just a few questions that I have.. Would appreciate input :-)

Firstly, is it unusual for the Exchange server to keep looking at the
floppy drive?

A few of the servers here do - and it's only since installing Exchange
2k. Seems to be only once every 5 minutes or so, and I can only imagine
it's just looking around for something it can't find or perhaps
something it would like to find.

Secondly, during the weekend the server just stopped responding.
Exchange was allowing me to work from two machines in the house, but
when I tried to log in from one of the other 8, it failed. NT would not
allow me in for a start, then when it got past that problem (Trying to
find the profile on the server) Exchange wanted verification of my
user/pass/domain. It refused to let me in even then. A couple of reboots
and all was well, but it caused some concern. Does this happen to anyone
else?

Thanks in advance,

Joe!

Subject: Exchange prompts for authentication every 10 minutes

this is weird.
NT 4 domain. 1 pdc, and 2 bdc's, one bdc is remote across 256k pipe.
Exchange 5.5, SP4, 3 different servers with mailboxes in same site. None are
DC's.

Started happening about two weeks ago. I thought it was only happening to
Office XP users, but know it is happening regularly to about 30 out of 500
mailboxes.

About every 10 minutes (even though logged into the domain, about 20 on the
LAN, 10 through dial-up) the Exchange server pops up the
username/password/domain authentication box. No matter what you enter your
password is wrong. Happened to me the first time right after I changed my
password so I thought it was a domain sync issue. Doing that didnt help. You
can hit cancel and go about your merry way without being denied access, but
it is a pain in the @ss . . .

Any ideas?

TIA! -- Chris

2001-10-29 Thread Ty Bradley

We are a small dept within the University - approx 100 users, NT4 Server and
Exchange 5.5 with latest service packs and patches, the user's workstations
are running Win98 and Outlook 2000.

Recently our HOD has had problems sending email to users within the
University, all other email functions seem to be ok for him, sending mail to
users in our dept and outside the Uni is ok, he can receive email from
within the Uni but can't send or reply to these addresses, he can send/reply
to addresses outside the Uni and within the dept.

This problem started for him about 2 weeks ago and I can't figure out what's
causing it.
No one else is affected, our other users can send and receive ok anywhere.

I setup a profile for HOD on another computer but the results were the same,
I thought it may be something to do with his profile on exchange server so
after backing up I deleted all reference to him from NT and Exchange, about
an hour later I setup his NT account using the copy function in user manager
to copy an existing account and then setup his email account and imported
the mail but still the problem persists.

Any help appreciated.

RE: Send/Reply

2001-10-29 Thread Ty Bradley

This is an example of the message received, it's always the same format and
the last line MSEXCH: IMS always contains the same information.
I've tried looking in Technet for any of the numbers listed but can't seem
to find anything on this particular problem.
The users he's trying to send to are on the general distribution list that
everyone has access to, at the moment he has to forward the message to his
secretary to send, and she sends using the same list.
He said he was able to send to these addresses ok and then all of a sudden
they were being bounced back.

Does this person have an alternate recipient defined for his/her mailbox?

P.S. Your initial explanation of your problem was not very clear at all.
You stated :

It's being delivered to the .pst file because I don't have room on
the server for more than 600 MB of email! Yes I know all about .pst
files
being
not the ideal place to store email, but I can't bring down the server
right
now, just to add hard drive!

That to me sounds like your mail server has only 600 MG of available space,
not:

I didn't say I have 600MB left on our mail server. The user's .pst
file is 600MB. We have whole bunch of salespeople and others, who
have each
at least
that much email.(Which you stated later)

Andy

I understand that there is a care bear exchange list you can subscribe to.
Maybe you should try there...

Item #1: Email doesn't necessarily say what you mean
Item #2: Sure she can talk for herself. However, we've been around here for
quite a few years so we tend to say what we want. Item #3: I saw that, she's
a very nice person and I would expect that of her. Item #4: I have been in
that position before with the exact opposite results you came up with. I
wonder why... Item #5: Your point is what?!? My mailbox is 700MB, I've seen
others over a GB. Big Deal, I've got plenty of disk space and I would never
nor will I ever advocate the use of PST's with an Exchange server.
Item #6: Apparently not. Not likely. Waaahh...
Item #7: Here's $.35, call someone who cares and ask for a refund.

1- I was trying to clarify my situation better for her.
Contrary to what you thought, I wasn't trying to be condescending to her.

2- Even if I did, can't talk for herself?! Who are you, her lawyer??!
Still it doesn't give you the right to insult people like that. And you
call
   yourself a computer professional??!

3- She responded to my email without any of the trash talk you did!

4- I am fully aware of our email system is not properly configured, but it's
not
because I don't know what is the best way to do it, it's because:
   A) No matter how many times I've told them, management doesn't want to
listen to me.
   B) It doesn't want to spend money.
   C) It's not a high priority
   D) The only time they would approve is when a disaster
happens. This is typical of this company. You gotta work in my company
to know what I'm talking about.

5- I didn't say I have 600MB left on our mail server. The user's .pst file
is 600MB.
We have whole bunch of salespeople and others, who have each at least
that much email.

6- I wasn't looking for advice how to set up our email system. I know my
stuff well enough.
I was just looking for an explanation for this. Instead what I got in
return was insult from you
and advice on how to set up my mail server and sarcastic remarks from
others, except
one person, who was actually trying to help me out.
7- So much for my wishful thinking that I can get help here!

He/she who properly configures his/her doesn't have problems. Apparently,
you don't follow this model.

You're the one who started the Again: User is currently out... like Lori
is stupid and can't read. I merely upgraded to the level deemed necessary
for you. Call me what you want, think of me what you may... Fact still
remains, you're housing improperly configured servers and clients. I more
than get it, you can't dignify anything because you have nothing useful to
dignify.

Configure your sh!t properly and then come

RE: Send/Reply

2001-10-29 Thread Tristan Gayford

I believe that your HOD is being blocked somewhere externally (as the
message is going through the IMS). It looks as though his address is blocked
by your main servers (I assume that you route all other non-departmental
mail through to a central system). Speak to the mail admins for the rest of
the Uni and find out what they have done!

hour later I setup his NT account using the copy function in
user manager to copy an existing account and then setup his
email account and imported the mail but still the problem persists.

Any help appreciated.

Give them 'modify user attributes' on the mailbox container level. This

Subject: GAL Web Tool Question

I have installed the GAL Web Tool on an IIS 5.0 server (followed
Q242223).
I then assigned the Human Resource group permission to the Directory
on the IIS server as well as to the virtual directory.
(Our firm decided that we do not wish to grant all our user's permission

to modify their own GAL entries. Only members of the Human Resource
department.)

When any member of the Human Resources uses the GAL Modify Web tool,
they are able to only modify their own entries in the GAL. When
they try to update any other entry, they receive a window which states
the
following:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Error Number 80070005
Error Description:
OK

The Error Description above is blank. There is no description
displayed.

This error occurs when the user clicks on the Save User Info button
after
modifying another user's GAL information. All of the members in the
human
resource department can edit their own GAL entries but no one else's.
The Human Resource group permissions on the Folder that holds the ASP
pages
is as follows:
Modify
Read Execute
List Folder Contents
Read
Write
On the Virtual Directory we are using Basic authentication only.

Does anyone know what I have done incorrectly or what I have left out?

PLEASE NOTE: IF I add the human resource users to the
EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATORS GROUP then they are able to edit any GAL entry
and
do not receive the above error.

What kind of permissions do I need to give these members on
the Exchange Server Side of things? I DO NOT WANT THEM TO BE
MEMBERS OF THE EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATORS GROUP.

Please help.
Mary

Joe!

plug it into the router. Someone needs to come out and do that. No I
don't have time to do that today sorry -Rebuilt a Crashed NT3.51
server, tracked down who uses it and why? -The 3.51 server's data gets

rolled into the new .net server I am playing with. Will do that
remotely from home tomorrow -sent out my normal morning 100 emails

The limit on Std version is 16GB per database.
on Std version are you limited on the number of storage groups on a

group or is it less? Any explicit references ont this you can

Hi all,

Just a few questions that I have.. Would appreciate input :-)

Firstly, is it unusual for the Exchange server to keep
looking at the floppy drive?

A few of the servers here do - and it's only since
installing Exchange 2k. Seems to be only once every 5
minutes or so, and I can only imagine it's just looking
around for something it can't find or perhaps something it
would like to find.

Secondly, during the weekend the server just stopped
responding. Exchange was allowing me to work from two
machines in the house, but when I tried to log in from one
of the other 8, it failed. NT would not allow me in for a
start, then when it got past that problem (Trying to find
the profile on the server) Exchange wanted verification of
my user/pass/domain. It refused to let me in even then. A
couple of reboots and all was well, but it caused some
concern. Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks in advance,

Joe!

 Do too... My morning

-I just had a conference call thingie. More work : -Finished off my
new router config then moved my old and new T1s to it -Tried to
explain over the phone to an office manager that he is getting a DS1
and not a DSL line, that it has been installed, but no he cannot just
plug it into the router.

-and of course flirted with some of the cute single gals here.

And I was still faster then you : .

Well we did have a meeting of the Inner Circle. Perhaps you missed the
invitation, or maybe you weren't on the guest list?

Anyways, I hear Dean has started a new mail list for the Inner Circle[1]
that is hosted at zzzptm.com. If you have been nominated to participate then
an invitation will be forthcoming. If you don't get an invitation, then
pretend you never saw this message.

OWA 2000 logoff ?

2001-10-29 Thread Tony Hlabse

In OWA2000 there are three ways you get logged off. One is to close the
browser which closes the session and clears any cached authenticated pages
so no one else can use your session. Two is to wait for 4 minutes (Default
timeout setting for OWA2000). Or spend a bunch off money for Messageware's
solution which gives you a logoff button.

Question is that a customer would like to have it so if he is browsing the
web and then backspaces to the OWA2000 session (within the 4 minute timeout
setting) he is forced to login again. I said I do not think there is a way
around the logoff procedures other than the above ones. I was curious if SSL
was installed if it changes/overrides the timeout settings. I do not really
want to setup up SSL at this time as we may change the name of the server
prior to cut over. Anybody have any experience with SSL and OWA2000 and
logoff issues different than normal sessions?

RE: OT - Luke save the Queen

2001-10-29 Thread Doug Hampshire

Ah yes, the ability of a governmental body to recognize something as
legitimate just because there are enough ignorant/stupid/silly/mischievous
people that can write something on a form.

Of course, on a list that normally contains a lot of off topic eMail, at
least most of it tries to tie it back to something eMail/Exchange related.

How about next time you start the thread off with something like I have
lots of silly users that are circulating an eMail about writing in Jedi
knight as a religion because we have lots of dolts in the UK government [1]
that will actually believe them. How can I filter out this useless eMail
from my Exchange system?

[1] Not to imply that the UK has cornered the market on dolts in government,
I believe that that exists most places.

Anti-virus scanner

2001-10-29 Thread Olivier de Heer

Dear Anyone,

We have a dedicated Connector server (Exchange 5.5 SP2) set up which
connects an Exchange 5.5 environment to a Lotus Notes environment. This
server only houses a X400 Connector and a Connector for Lotus Notes (so no
Mailboxes). I know there isn’t an anti-virus package that can scan X400
connectors on Exchange 5.5 yet. Is there an anti-virus scanning product
for the Connector for Lotus Notes on Exchange 5.5? (I have my doubts)
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Olivier

given a

You need to configure your IMC to receive all of the host names used on the

2001-10-29 Thread Doug Hampshire

I said there were dolts in government, not implying that those that support
the dolts are dolts. Nor did I imply that ALL public office holders are
dolts. However, if you want to align yourself with the dolts, then please
feel free to do so. :-)

I don't worry about users sending large multimedia files around as we block
large files on all MTA's, X.400 connectors, and IMS's. [1]

[1] Notice how I cleverly include actual Exchange content in this off-topic

Our exchange 5.5 server with sp4 installed just froze up. It was not

Secret Cabal mailing list

2001-10-29 Thread Doug Hampshire

Okay Dean, I've sent out invitations for the new Secret Cabal mailing list
[1] to everyone that we identified and voted on. You should start seeing the
Join submissions very soon. Remember we need to make sure that all new
members understand that this list must remain a secret and it's subscription
mailing address is never revealed. As instructed, I'm having them send a
message with the text Join Secret-Cabal Name to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[1] As opposed to the Old Secret Cabal mailing list, which of course I
disavow all knowledge and refute the actual existence thereof.

RE: Outlook Replies

2001-10-29 Thread Don Ely

In your IMS properties in Exchange, on the routing tab, add every additional
domain (host) name to the routing. I configure mine to reroute to my
primary domain name so all is seamless and is transparent to everyone.
Don't use the email address, just use your .com.

I am not sure what you mean by adding the host names used in Linux(ie:email
address [EMAIL PROTECTED])??? Or just .com

ronk

You need to configure your IMC to receive all of the host names used
on the Sendmail side. Along with that, you might consider rerouting
all of the extra hosts to your primary domain. Things will appear
 more seamless that way.

Accessing mails via remote Dial-up

2001-10-29 Thread Jean-Claude

Hello! I am new to this subject, please bear with me.
Our users would like to access their emails from outside using our dial-up
connection with ATT. Once they dial to ATT they will be put on our
network via our T1 connection with ATT. We do not want to use OWA. Is
there any one using a similar configuration to ours (Dial-up + T1) to
access emails? Could you please tell us how you have made your exchange
servers available to your mobile users.?

I have two email servers. One stores our users mailboxes, the other one
is a connector servers with 2 connectors: Internet Service connector (For
inbound mail only from 2 unix server used internally ) and an X.400
connector that forward/retrieve all outbound/inbound mails to a head
server in France, which in turn will forward the emails to the Internet.
We have a T1 connection with ATT and would like to use ATT DIALUP to

I have been to Glastonbury a few times. I also visited the washroom this

And im afraid the connection is still crap and nothing to do with exchange

Event 9582

2001-10-29 Thread Cook, David A.

Hello all,

I have run into the event entry below twice in the past month on two
different servers. Everything I find on this is specific to clusters and
I am not running any clusters. Q296073 states The event ID 9582
referenced in this article is only a concern for Active/Active cluster
configurations. In Active/Passive configuration and non-clustered
Exchange 2000 Servers this event ID 9582 can be ignored.. I would like
to believe that and move on but in both situations that I've seen this
my Exchange servers have stopped allowing users to login within 24 hours
of the event. Has anyone else seen this?

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Performance
Event ID: 9582
Date: 10/27/2001
Time: 7:37:46 PM
User: N/A
Computer: EX0301
Description:
The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented
in such a way that performance may be affected. It is highly
recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this
issue.

-I just had a conference call thingie. More work :
-Finished off my new router config then moved my old and new T1s to it
-Tried to explain over the phone to an office manager that he is getting
a DS1 and not a DSL line, that it has been installed, but no he cannot
just plug it into the router. Someone needs to come out and do that. No
I don't have time to do that today sorry
-Rebuilt a Crashed NT3.51 server, tracked down who uses it and why?
-The 3.51 server's data gets rolled into the new .net server I am
playing with. Will do that remotely from home tomorrow
-sent out my normal morning 100 emails
-and of course flirted with some of the cute single gals here.

And I was still faster then you : .

RE: Windows .NET Administration Tools

2001-10-29 Thread Webb, Andy

If you don't have a .NET server, then there's not much need for the .NET
admin tools is there?

If you have an MSDN subscription, you may be able to get it. Otherwise the
standard channels of your Microsoft representative would be the next path.

Auto Accept Script

2001-10-29 Thread John Martinez

Exchange 5.5 SP4
Windows 2000 SP2
Outlook 2000 SP1

Hi all,
I am running the Auto Accept Script from exchangecode.com. I have a
secretary that did something that is forcing me to directly access the
Calendar for the resource running the script but whenever I try to access it
Outlook2000 just hangs. I tried running the /cleanfreebusy several times on
Friday but it acts the same. Opens and hangs forever. Does anyone know how I
can fix this so I can get to the Calendar? The script is still running fine.

RE: alternate recipient + delivery to email domain

2001-10-29 Thread Jennifer Baker

I think you answered your own question:

we do not use DNS nor Hosts entry for @x2.abc.com as we just indicate
the IP of that host in the forward all messages to this domain..that Hosts
receives messages just from us so they do not have any presence on the
internet...other than its IP address

If the host is not registered in dns then the mail will bounceback
immediately. If there is a record in dns for the host yet the host is down,
exchange will retry transmit of message (host is down or unreachable). If
the domain is registered yet authorative nameservers are not available,
exchange will retry until nameservers become available or until the retry
period is over (network error during host resolution).

we have some mailboxes that use delivery to alternate recipient
the alternate recipient is @x2.abc.com also we have insructed the IMC

all works fine when that Host is on.

problem is that when they turn the server off, we start getting
error 3010/3011/4031 and messages bounce back to the sender.

I have checked the Service messages queues in the IMC
Retry interval (hrs)=.25,.5,1,4
Timeout (hrs)=Urgent=24,normal=48,non-urgent=72
as for what I checked messages stay iun the outbound queue just one hour.
the parametrs show above should guarantee me to stay at least 24Hrs

If the hosts is off let say 8 hours the sender get (immediately) the

RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?

2001-10-29 Thread Ferneyhough, Dan

If there's no indication of problems with the disk, try checking the
transaction logs to see if a large number of logs were generated in a short
period of time corresponding to the hang. I've seen instances where 5.5 SP4
servers become unresponsive to clients as a result of someone attempting to
send a *huge* attachment (500Mb+) and it bogged down the server. If this
does prove to be the case then consider implementing internal message size
limits.

Dollars to donuts your HD went belly-up[1].

At least that would be the first thing to check on a perfectly running
Exchange server that nobody's been monkeying with.

Check your event/RAID logs (whichever is appropriate).

Our exchange 5.5 server with sp4 installed just froze up. It was not
responding to outlook clients and the cursor was not responsive. I had to
resort to the reset button to restart it. Is is possible that a malformed
mail message could have caused this? Is there a post SP4 patch that might
help? This server has never locked up like this in the last 2 years, and
nothing has changed recently.

RE: OWA 2000 logoff ?

OWA without SSL = BAD...

You can register the SSL cert under a generic name instead of the actual
server name, that way, it doesn't matter wether you are going to change
the server name later or not.

Subject: OWA 2000 logoff ?

In OWA2000 there are three ways you get logged off. One is to close the
browser which closes the session and clears any cached authenticated
pages
so no one else can use your session. Two is to wait for 4 minutes
(Default
timeout setting for OWA2000). Or spend a bunch off money for
Messageware's
solution which gives you a logoff button.

Question is that a customer would like to have it so if he is browsing
the
web and then backspaces to the OWA2000 session (within the 4 minute
timeout
setting) he is forced to login again. I said I do not think there is a
way
around the logoff procedures other than the above ones. I was curious if
SSL
was installed if it changes/overrides the timeout settings. I do not
really
want to setup up SSL at this time as we may change the name of the
server
prior to cut over. Anybody have any experience with SSL and OWA2000 and
logoff issues different than normal sessions?

Maybe you should try there...

Item #1: Email doesn't necessarily say what you mean
Item #2: Sure she can talk for herself. However, we've been around here for
quite a few years so we tend to say what we want. Item #3: I saw that, she's

that position before with the exact opposite results you came up with. I
wonder why... Item #5: Your point is what?!? My mailbox is 700MB, I've seen

nor will I ever advocate the use of PST's with an Exchange server.

Instead what I got in
return was insult from you
and advice on how to set up my mail server and sarcastic remarks from
others, except
one person, who was actually trying to help me out.
7- So much for my wishful thinking that I can get help here!

Subject: Only Admins can access OWA??

 I have OWA(Ex5.5\SP4) running on a IIS 4 machine inside a DMZ
using NAT. The only people who can access it are Domain and
Exchange admins. Everyone else gets prompted for their NT
credentials and then gets a blank screen. Nothing in the IIS
permissions explicitly mentions Exhange or domain admins
groups. I have found nothing that describes this particular
issue in the KB. Has anyone seen this??

RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?

2001-10-29 Thread Pfefferkorn, Pete (PFEFFEPE)

We had a similar problem where the system just locked. Console froze and
only resort was to power cycle the system. If the system totally locked up
it may indicate a hardware problem. At least in our case it was. Check to
see if you might have some bad memory in the system. We had a couple of
dimms that were bad.

First Time Setup

2001-10-29 Thread Mike Carlson

I moved from a IMAP/SMTP mail server to using Exchange 2K and I have
some general questions about the setup and configuration. I have a small
home network with 5 servers and a few clients.

1. I want to connect to the Exchange server through my NAT router. I
read that I need to setup static ports for Exchange to use since it
randomly selects ports once the client connects through port 135. Has
anyone done this? Are there any issues with this?

2. I did not have ADS setup so I built a new box to start the AD and to
install Exchange on it since it required AD. Can I keep the Exchange
server on the Domain Controller of the AD or will this cause issues such
as too much overhead? If there is an issue, can I set up another box as
the exchange server and them copy everything over to the new box? How
would I do that?

3. Is there tips and tricks for a home network? I can only forsee 5 to
10 users total. Its mostly setup to do development for Outlook forms and
what not for clients and to provide email for the family.

Thanks,
Mike

Missing email messages

2001-10-29 Thread David Lefebvre

This may not be strictly an Exchange Server question, but I am interested in
how a message can fail to be delivered and no error message is received by
the sender.

We run ES 5.5 SP4 on NT4.0 SP6. There have been no recent configuration
changes apart from the installation of SP4. The system has been up and
running satisfactorily for 2 years or more now.

I had been advised that email had been sent to us and had not arrived, and
no non-delivery report has been received by the sender.

On Saturday last, the problem occurred to me while I was sending messages to
the site from another internet mail account hosted at another ISP.

Three emails were sent within a few minutes of each other, the first and
third arriving correctly and speedily. The second did not arrive, and no
non-delivery report has yet been received (now 2 days later). The first and
third messages were to individual recipients at the site, the second message
was to multiple recipients at the same site.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?

I suggest, as have others, that you look at a possible hard disk failure.
The only time I have experienced this situation is following a scsi disk
failure. On first reset the disk showed up as failed, a power cycle luckily
got it started. It has now been replaced.

Mike,

1. The static ports are only if you want to connect to it from the Internet.
Since you also have your Exchange server configured as DC for your AD, it
won't be wise to open up access to it from the Internet. Why not deploy a
VPN solution for Internet access?

2. With 10 users the overhead shouldn't be a big issue. The reason why
you'd want to move it is to avoid putting all the eggs in one basket.
