RE: Storage Groups vs Mailbox Stores
We have specified multiple stores in storage groups for our 2000 deployment, but as yet, we haven't decided who will go where. If you put all the payroll users on one store, you may get quite a good single instance ratio, and can set policies for those users, etc, which is good. However, if you have a problem with that store, you have the whole of payroll to contend with. We are also looking at 'users created/migrated this week go on store 1, next week on store 2, the week after on store 3, then back to store 1, etc' Regards, Rob Ellis Messaging Consultant Service Delivery Solutions Programmes IBM Global Services DDI: 01256 752845 Mobile: 07974 111867 Fax: 01256 754899 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Chris Scharff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 2:06 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Storage Groups vs Mailbox Stores Mounting the first mailbox store in a storage group takes more resources that mounting additional stores in a single storage group. RE: partially off-topic - virus' travelling via html e-mails
Peter Thanks for your reply. re. branding emails - this is a 3rd party add on to the internet mail connector that converts the email into html and adds your logo to the top of it and also adds a sidebar giving address/contact details. It ends up looking like a framed web page. It is viruses travelling in html formatting I'm particularly interested in so I'll check the kak worm out in more detail. I think it's only a matter of time before a major virus outbreak occurs caused by mass mailing of an html newsletter fetching something from the web when it's viewed. It's everyone's worst fear having a virus where the user only has to open a message to activate it rather than having to open an attachment. Let me know what you think. Thanks Andy There have been several viruses that have tried to update themselves from internet addresses, both websites and newsgroups. There have also been a few that have travelled in the HTML formatting of e-mails, notably the kak worm. I don't think there have been any that did both, however. Moving folders through replication, agent scripts
Just a thing I found out while experimenting with PF replication, moving, where some PF have agents installed. I thought somebody else could find this interesting. Some help arouse by Michael Veitch (thanks). Two server, same site, PF server for old and new is the old server (new didn't have a PF store until recently). PF with agent on old server. Add replica on new server, wait for syncronization, change home server, wait, remove instance on old server. Bummer, agent won't run anymore. Give permission on the destination server for the Events Root\Eventconfig_server and wait some time, until dest. server is available for selection in outlook - agents - run scripts in this server. Change it, test: Event has fired for newly arrived object, but not for a couple of email arrived while the event service was still configured on the old server. This is rather important - appareantly it means it is necessary to move the event script to the new server *before* removing the old instance. It also means when moving recursively (with propagate change to subfolders) lots of folders it is necessary to change manualy from outlook the server scripts are running on, or to write code which does it, before removing the old instance. RE: Exchange Server - Outlook Client Slowdown
Two things. First, you don't state what (if any) antivirus software is running on the machine. There have been issues in the past of AV causing this kind of slowdown, but if its one of the better vendors you're probably fine. Second - my guess is that you're having network problems, specifically the NIC to Switch connection is set to autosense, which is BAD. Force both the switch and NIC to 100Mb Full Duplex and see if that fixes the issue. If not, try 100/Half (some NIC drivers can't handle 100/Full correctly). Roger -- Roger D. It IS the network. Force the NIC and switch port to 100m Full Duplex and save the new Compaq gear for a Quake server. -- Roger D. Very few members of this list have Ex on DC's for the already over discussed reasons. We may be seeing the downside of having such. Like you say, you can live with it but it does bug a little. Your hardware looks fine (well comparing it to mine anyway!) - the box I already have built and in the rack is a Compaq DL380 with 4 x 18.2Gb 10K2 RAID5 and 2 x 18Gb 10K2 Mirrored, 512Mb memory and dual 1Gb PIII's. Teaming NIC's and a 5200 RAID controller finish it off. I need to set aside some of the christmas holiday to do the transfer. I've discounted any bottlenecks in the LAN as I have just replaced all old hubs and switches with Cisco 3500XL 10/100 switches on GB fibre backbones so it must be the combo of DC and Exchange that is choking it. If I get any ideas I'll let you know. Thanks all for the ONDL pointer and the good wishes. But, there definately is a VBScript that, when launched, brings up what looks like the GAL. You then select the DL's and it then ouputs the Membership. I'll continue looking. As far as Disaster Recovery goes, make sure your Backups are running well and that you get the tapes off-site ASAP. If somebody thinks that you can cut costs but not having the tapes picked up as often as once a week, then have them get in touch with me. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Our current setup is; - Single Server Exchange Server Enterprise 5.5 Sp4 running OWA - Compaq Server Dual PII 450 Xeon Processors - 5 hard drives - 3 10,000rpm 36.4 GB drives in RAID 5 (Databases) - 2 10,000rpm 9.1 GB drives in RAID 1 (Transaction Logs) - Server is running at 100mbps full duplex. - Pub.edb = 150mb - Priv.edb 18.5 GB (approx 40GB of free space) - Circular Logging Turned off - Differential Arcserve Backup enabled - 200 - 230 Users and 300 mailboxes Description For the past couple of weeks we have notice a perceptible slowdown in client side response times on our exchange server. The slowdown mainly happens at peak times,(9-10am and 2-3pm) however we have noticed it with attachments and at other times as well. It sometimes can take 5-8 seconds to open an e-mail with an attachment where we have been getting immediate response before. For scrolling through messages in Outlook we have also noticed a slow down. Also - when copying an attachment from an e-mail to your local machine,(right click and copy, then paste to desktop) this response time has decrease dramatically. Although these slowdowns do not stop us from working on a daily basis we would like to get on top of this issue and do what we need to do to keep our Exchange server speedy. RE: Moving folders through replication, agent scripts
Yes, it's indeed true that event scripts are tied to a specific server. They don't travel with the public folder and don't replicate with new instances. RE: partially off-topic - virus' travelling via html e-mails
I don't think that converting all your outgoing messages to HTML will increase the chances of a virus outbreak. I'm guessing that 95% of the messages we send are HTML as it is, since all the rich text messages are converted to HTML on sending to the Internet. Furthermore, because of Kak, all the virus scanners now are capable of scanning message bodies for viruses encoded in the HTML. If you're looking for an argument against HTML message branding, I think a better one will be all the email clients still out there that probably won't be able to view them correctly. -Peter -Original Message- From: Andy Russell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 1:16 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: partially off-topic - virus' travelling via html e-mails Peter Thanks for your reply. re. branding emails - this is a 3rd party add on to the internet mail connector that converts the email into html and adds your logo to the top of it and also adds a sidebar giving address/contact details. What do you mean by branding emails with html conversions? -Peter -Original Message- From: Andy Russell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2001 13:32 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: partially off-topic - virus' travelling via html e-mails Hi all I am trying to find if there is any evidence of virus' travelling via html format emails between systems - ie. the sort of virus that goes and fetches something off of the internet when you view the html email. There is movement in my company to start branding emails with html conversions but I think that with the increasing quantity of virus' around html email will be unpopular within a year or so and everyone will go back to rich text or plain text. Of course I could be wrong anyone seen any articles about this type of risk? I'm not talking about the direct replication of the virus in this format - more the initial infection coming in this way rather than as an attachment which is getting rather predictable now... Click on that and you might be surprised how much deleted mail is still lurking on the server. Delete all the deleted again from that screen. Has helped here a number of times. IISlockdown tool and e2k issue
Hi, Did anybody applied the IISlockdown tool before installing their e2k server? Since I've been having lot of problem with my e2k regarding access violation, I installed the e2k without applying the IISlockdown tool. Now I don't get any errors. I am bit paranoid that SMTP is integrated with IIS 5.0 in e2k. My question is that do I have to have the IISlockdown applied to the e2k server? I tried applying it after the e2k installation. It failed. Second, if I am going to use SSL(TSL) for my OWA, do I need port 80 opened at the firewall? Please give me your suggestion on the OWA access(through VPN, through SSL). Mark, the log says the OAB did not synchronize which is the saem as the article on technet. No new Organizational forms have been created. RE: Antigen and Email Content Filter
I've been using Lyris MailShield for a while with very few issues (one major one after an upgrade about a year ago, but quickly resolved). Interoperability has not been an issue. The worst thing about such products is that in order to stop the most spam, you will inadvertently stop a lot of legitimate mail. If you enable fewer anti-spam measures to allow the legitimate stuff through, you end up with a bunch of spam. Maintaining the balance has proven to be difficult, and a losing battle as the spammers catch on to the blocking techniques. Try and stay away from Mimesweeper. We found out the hard way that it is a single threaded app, and is only recommended (by their own tech support) for exchange servers with less than 500 users. Re: Antigen and Email Content Filter
I've just taken over running my companies system using Mailsweeper - it seems to do everything - it bolts into some very powerful anti-virus software and can filter on just about anything - predefined word lists, phrases, boolean expressions, it will sort into multiple containers, manage those containers itself, forward email notifications for certain types of rogue messages etc. We use a version on a standalone machine between our ISP and Exchange which seems to work very well as it is very processor intensive. I'm very impressed with it - not much spam gets through at all now. RE: partially off-topic - virus' travelling via html e-mails
Thanks Peter, that's a good balanced opinion. I'm not so much just looking for an argument against html (although anything which keeps message sizes smaller has got to be better for everyone) just making sure that html will have a future if we adopt it more widely. I'd missed the thought about virus scanners scanning message bodies for rogue code. So many html messages when you read them these days seem to go out to the internet to pick up the rest of the message that I was starting to get concerned about what else they may do whilst they're pulling data down. Cheers Andy Russell Exchange Admininstrator MCSE I don't think that converting all your outgoing messages to HTML will increase the chances of a virus outbreak. RE: Antigen and Email Content Filter
I'm running MAILSweeper 4.2 for SMTP, which does not bolt onto Exchange system at all. We use an IN-Box which sits on the DMZ and pretty much just checks for inbound Viruses, Size Restrictions, and also blocks unwanted mail by SMTP address. This box is also used as an SMTP relay so that internal UNIX/Listserv machines have a way to get mails outbound. A second box is used for Outbound mail. The great thing about MIMESweeper is that it links with most major AV Apps. (we use Sophos for MIMESweeper and the Desktop, Trend on Exchange), can do Legal Disclaimers, and does a great job of keeping unwanted e-mails completely out of the Exchange environment. If you are going to terminate an employee and delete their Exchange account, then you can put their SMTP address into a MIMESWeeper rule thus giving the ability to send out a canned response that the employee no longer works there, and also stops the DNR issue. All in all, a great product, but pretty complicated. You really need to work with the product a lot to get used to it, and Content Technologies / Baltimore does offer training and certification. (I'm certified). -Original Message- From: Andy Russell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 2:34 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Antigen and Email Content Filter I've just taken over running my companies system using Mailsweeper - it seems to do everything - it bolts into some very powerful anti-virus software and can filter on just about anything - predefined word lists, phrases, boolean expressions, it will sort into multiple containers, manage those containers itself, forward email notifications for certain types of rogue messages etc. We use a version on a standalone machine between our ISP and Exchange which seems to work very well as it is very processor intensive. Looking for help to lessen if not stop the Spam
Hey Guys and Gals, Due to the increase of unsolicited e-mail over the past few weeks, members of my university community have gotten sick of receiving these unwanted messages. While my general reaction to users who want to know how to stop this type of spam is to use their Delete Key, create an Outlook Rule, ensure that they are not advertising their e-mail addresses in public forums i.e. newsgroups, the issue has escalated to the level of our CEO and University President. A mandate has come down to find a method that will limit such types of mail while allowing the majority of other e-mail to be delivered uninterrupted and without filtering on specific phrases in e-mail. As I am sure we have all seen this before, I am actively searching the Archives for previous suggestions and have come across a few that are being investigated, however I have seen so far no mention of an ability to Filter messages based on the total number of message recipients, To+CC+BCC. While we may not be able to filter on content here, it has been suggested that if it were possible to stop messages with greater than X number of recipients then we may do so. Does anyone know if this is possible ? I know I can limit the total number of recipients in a Distribution List and for Outbound e-mail, but I do not know if it is possible for Inbound. Exchange 2000 events
Hullo... I want to write an application that will be able to filter all e-mail that passes though our Exchange 2000 servers, MAPI and SMTP. I want to be able to filter inbound mail before it is posted to the user's mailbox, and outbound mail before it actually is sent from the server. There are numerous facilities for developers bundled inside Exchange 2000, and I assume that one of them would suit my needs perfectly. However, I cannot quite get my brain around which facility that might be. My question then is what, in general terms, would be required to build a program or DLL, preferably in VB, that could be placed in a position on the server alongside Microsoft Exchange that would provide the minimal service of reading the subject of each in-bound and out-bound e-mail? Outlook 98. We are interested in building a large number of Exhange mailboxes using a template that has predetermined values in the Office field, department field and space limits. We cannot find the prohibit send and receive value to place in the CSV file. Does anyone know what this might be? RE: Building large number of mailboxes
Jennifer, I am sorry I did not understand what you were saying? Change the last value and re-import? What we were trying to do on this test was to see what current value people had on their mailboxes and the second and third were the same? Limiting a Mailbox to internal communication only.
How can I limit a mailbox to internal communication only? I.E. no receiving or sending of internet mail. Do I just remove the SMTP address from the account? also Is it possible to limit an exchange account to a computer? In other words, I have a mailbox which I want anyone to be able access but only from our Inspection computer. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Limiting a Mailbox to internal communication only.
That will prevent them from getting mail; in order to prevent from them sending, you need to add them on the IMS Restriction tab -Original Message- From: Craig Manske [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 4:49 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Limiting a Mailbox to internal communication only.
