RE: inbox repair tool
2GB PST = VERY BAD. I am not aware of any other repair tool besides SCANPST. If the PST cannot be opened and the user does not have a backup there is not much you can do. I have seen PSTs with far less get corrupted (and the user did not have a backup) and the mail was unrecoverable. The user may get mad, but the only person they can blame is themselves. I don't care if they are the CEO. The mail is toast. RE: AV! a full time job?
That would depend on the size and complexity of your environment, what types of attachments that you need to allow into your company and how sensitive your company is to downtime due to a virus outbreak. Many of the anti virus vendors now have Consoles that can manage your deployments across multiple platforms and can provide those wonderful Dilbert reports. I wouldn't think your environment at 1300 users would require a full time position, but it would require someone that dedicated some number of hours per day/week towards antivirus. -Original Message- From: Hansen, Eric [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 5:24 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: AV! a full time job? That would depend on the size and complexity of your environment, what types of attachments that you need to allow into your company and how sensitive your company is to downtime due to a virus outbreak. Many of the anti virus vendors now have Consoles that can manage your deployments across multiple platforms and can provide those wonderful Dilbert reports. I wouldn't think your environment at 1300 users would require a full time position, but it would require someone that dedicated some number of hours per day/week towards antivirus. -Original Message- From: Hansen, Eric [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 5:24 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: AV! a full time job? RE: AV! a full time job?
It could be, depending on the company (someone has already hit on a number of different elements). It would also depend on how much AV your company has in place right now. If you're going from ZERO AV protection, yes, it should be a full time project until you have the layers of protection in place and running. This could be easily rolled into a generic network/computer security position, which should be a full time job. RE: AV! a full time job?
I disagree. Personally I think if you are a large organization you should have at least 2 people solely dedicated to keeping up with AV. It's a tough job to always be on top, and would require constant attention. Someone should be in place to be able to send emails and warn others of the hazards of virii on the horizon. If you are in such a large organization and you can afford to hire someone, I suggest you do so. In fact, I would gladly leave my position to take on an AV position in your company for 65K a year, full med and dental benefits, 5 weeks vacation, a free to use mobile phone, and sodas and snacks provided in office. Dear Bob, Eric mentioned that he had 1300 users. I am wondering, How many NT Servers, or Total Servers?. How many Laptops and PCs? Wawa has one NT Server and one NT Workstation in each Store (525 Stores, and growing). The Server Farm at HQ has just over 90 NT Servers. We have 500 Laptop Users and 400 PC Users. The NT Servers are running NetShield 4.5, and are updated once a week. The Exchange Servers are running GroupShield 4.0.4 and are also updated once a week. I perform manual updates during virus alerts, but that is not a full time position. The Client configuration is part of the standard build (both Windows 95 and Windows 2000) for a weekly update. Once setup, what else needs to be done? What else warrants another full time employee? By the way, this is not a commercial for Network Associates. RE: Changing OBJ-Container
Its not possible even WITH a directory export/import. Object Container is the container in which the object resides. The only way to change that is to move the object to a new container, which means deleting and recreating the object. Now, the delete and recreate CAN be done via export/import, but there is that crucial middle step of saving the information in the object (in the case of mailboxes). -- Roger D. New mail notification
Recently, the client machines at my WAN sites stopped receiving new mail notifications. I have a sniffer on my exchange box and conducted two packet captures. The first is between exchange and a local machine. Outlook is open when the capture is started, and a new piece of mail is sent to the clients mailbox. The first two packets seen are UDP and sent from Exchange to the client machine, notifying it of the new mail. The second capture is between Exchange and a client on the WAN. Following the same procedure, it appears that no UDP packets are sent to that client machine. Any ideas why the Exchange machine is not sending these packets out? RE: GAL and Address Book Views
Check the E2K FAQ in the link below, most of the address list population rules there apply to 5.5 as well. In my test environment, I have created Address Book Views. Then I set an anonymous account on the DS Site Configuration. I also gave the search permission to the service account for the Organization and gave search permission to Domain Users for the Address Book Views. There are two views and the permission is given at the root. I did all this in an effort to control which folders of addresses the users would see when they run Outlook. It all works fine except for one issue: When running Outlook and checking the Address Book the entries under Global Address List only include records seen in one of the Address Book Views. Both address book views are listed below the Global Address List and they show the addresses that would be expected. I thought that Global Address List would contain all the records that could be seen in the address folders shown below it. Can anybody tell me why Global Address List in Outlook doesn't contain all the addresses shown in the Address Book Views listed below it? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: AV! a full time job?
I don't think this is a full time job. If you have a full time position just for A/V, you'd have to have a backup person since viruses do not take any vacation. Instead of having full time position, pay A/V vendor to notify you ( other support staffs) when there's new virus via pager, cell phone, email, etc. If you want to have closer relationship with A/V vendor, pay more money to have someone like Technical Account Manager, TAM. Once you have those communcation method established, you have to have software that can distribute updates automatically and fast. RE: AV! a full time job?
I remember in my last review my boss wrote Martin watches over the Exchange server and the Antivirus like a hawk That is the key. Pay attention. Even the best automated system needs to be watched. Someone always needs to verify the latest patterns are being DL'd and distributed, that the correct extensions are blocked, etc. It doesn't need to be full time, just part time, done right. -Original Message- From: Brian Ko [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 8:57 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: AV! a full time job? Good afternoon group, Happy Holidays OUTLOOK 98 NT 5.5 SP4 I have a mailbox name that does not resolve when it is typed in its completed name: Kelli Kappus When I key in Kell Kap or anything similar it resolves. The problem I see is the directory name is Kelly.Kappus We found out the real name was Kelli so we changed it on the general tab. Is this why the name does not resolve? RE: AV! a full time job?
So it really isn't a matter of too much work, but rather a matter of poor management. In any company, but in particular one your size, allowing departments to manage computers is a recipe for disaster. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but not any longer. There should be a central point of contact for all machines. Orders are placed through that group and delivered to them for configuration and delivery to the end users or departments. That way all hardware is fully tracked and managed. You should be using logon scripts as one method of pushing out AV installs and DAT updates. That way for someone to login, AV software has to be installed. I would suggest rather than spend 50-60K a year for an AV tech, that you put that time / money into better management. Ill bet you if you went to upper management and said OK, we need a new hardware procedure, OR we need to spend 60K a year for an AV guy, they would let you have your way -Original Message- From: Hansen, Eric [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2001 9:04 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: AV! a full time job? RE: AV! a full time job?
Any job where one is expected to be perfect is job is full time. If you don't think so ask all the Security personal who were sacked after I Love You went around. Anti-Virus really should be included in the job description of your Security Manager. It also depends on the size of your environment. Obviously if you have 10 PCs you don't need a security manager. But then again if you have 10 PCs you probably don't need an IT staff. I would say that if your environment is over 1000 PCs then it would pay to have a full time security person. If not, the guy who is assigned to do it should make sure he has his manager signs a disclaimer, I will not be held responsible for any damage caused to the network by viruii which were contracted while I was accomplishing the task for which I was hired. It's a bit harsh, yes, but you need to protect yourself from those big fat corporate types in times like these. -cm -Original Message- From: Garrish, Robert B. RE: Permissions necessary for public folder to receive SMTPmail
No, you can't really do it [1]. Because, the incoming SMTP messages are not coming from your IMS, they are coming from individuals. Also, both you and Daniel are right. In E2K, you need to give create rights to Anonymous as opposed to Default. However, in E5.5, default=create is what you need. S. [1] You can always write a custom event and somehow go through the SMTP headers to see if your IMS server is in the headers and reject the message if it's not. [2] [2] But why? What on earth are you trying to accomplish? -Original Message- From: Walden H. RE: AV! a full time job?
Eric, We are using the same AV you are and we are approximately the same size you are. We got the Symantec Corporate 7.6 upgrade about a week ago. Side Note: With XP/NAV 7.6 installed on a workstation, you will have to turn off your AV software before trying to burn a CD. As Ed Crowley (ONE of my heroes among MANY on this list) is so fond of stating, There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems. Your management needs to do what our management here has done. No server OR workstation is connected to our network, without our permission...period. People are going to whine and cry until they get used to it, but both your life and theirs will be less stressful and simpler, once this is done. We have about 950 users, with about 1150 workstations and servers. Two of the departments in our IT org are the Help Desk and the Network Infrastructure departments. No workstation is allowed on the network without the Help Desk first installing an image that contains all the basic workstation apps, NAV for the desktop, SMS 2.0, patches, upgrades, blah blah blah. No server is ever put on the network without our Network Infrastructure group building the server ourselves. Once a server is built, it goes into the cypher-locked server room...Nobody but the Ifrastructure group has access to the server room. Now...once you have all that in place, you are set to introduce the company to SMS 2.0. Our SMS Admin has created NAV packages, based on the workstation type found by the login script. The login script checks for SMS...if not there somehow, it's logged in the SMS DB and the Help Desk is sent out to install it. Once that happens, the machine is assimilated, software inventory is done, NAV is installed and the WS is virus scanned. NAV on the WS is locked down and cannot be turned off. The uninstall is password protected. If they *somehow* manage to get it uninstalled, then the next time they logon, it's reinstalled. NAV can be set up to download the latest .dat files at a specific time, pushed out to distribution points and then to the WS's and servers...much like SMS. Not only that, but we also have a Linux 7.0 mail relayer running Qmail and Qmail Scan that blocks attachment and subject types before ever getting to the network. We haven't been infected since before Melissa knock on wood. One time, the combustive properties of helium came up in our conversation (don't ask me why). He insisted that helium was a combustible gas. I told him he was wrong and eventually had to break out the Funk Wagnall's to prove it. The very first sentence under Helium stated, of course, that it was, in fact, a non-combustible gas. His response was (I'll never forget), How old is that encyclopedia? What a moron! I hear you, . . . but before you preach the gospel to me let me just tell you, it's not what you think. I need it for a client connection over a WAN. Exchange Uninstall
I am looking for a way to remove completely all files and all registry entrees from a failed exchange 5.5 install on a 2000 machine that is in an active directory environment. What happens is the install goes fine, but just as it starts to replicate, it fails. The error is the System Attendant can't find the file specified. But no listing as to what the file is. I don't want to rebuild this server just because it is a pain. What happen, is a tech had a bad Exchange CD. She borrowed mine, and didn't throw her's away. Guess which CD she gave me back and thought was mine. Her bad one. So I am looking for documentation on all regentries, locations of all files so I can manually remove this thing. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
