[Felvtalk] Angel Buffy

2009-03-25 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi,
I was wondering if I could have Angel Buffy added to the candle light
service..She is Angel Snoopy's sister..They were all friends of my kitties.
Bandy, Inky, Lil Rascal, Buster, Albert, and Alberta, and Striper.
She was my heart puppy..She had been on heart meds for CHF for 15 months..I
lost her Tuesday, March 24..
I hope all of you are doing good these days.. I miss talking to you all, but as
you all know we don't miss the dreaded Felv.

Thanks so much!

Hi Belinda,
Thank you so much for adding him..I know he is at the bridge with all his buddies now.It is so lonely in this house without him. I haven't moved any of his things yet. I just can't do it.
It is such an empty feeling as you all know.
Anyway, I want to thank all of you once again for all your thoughts and help over the last few years.

Thank you all so much for all the kind words and all the words of wisdom over the last few years..I know there must have been a big party at the bridge. Inky was met by his mom, sister and all his other relatives that I had over the last 15 yrs. He was the last of 10 from 3 different litters..
MC, you couldn't have put it any better to me..Also, Gloria, Belinda and Kerry...each of your words will help me in many ways. I do have more kitties...most of which are all young. It's just that Inky was the only house kitty. He shared space with my 2 dogs. (which turn 13 in May) So I am going to wait awhile before I move anyone into the house. I just don't think I could do that yet.
Thanks again,
Kerry

Hi everyone,
I think some of you might remember helping me with Inky back when Bandy was ill. Although Inky wasn't felv+, I would like him added to friends at the CLS. He was Buster and Lil Rascal's uncle. He was 21 yrs 8 months and 4 days. He fought a tough battle with CRF, IBD, and hyper-t for the past 2 1/2 yrs. He went on his own terms and in his own time..He did some really unusual things the last 10 days prior to his death. Just re-visiting some of his favorite places in the house and such..He was one exceptional kitty, and I miss him so much..The place isn't the same without him as most of you know how that is.
Anyway, he passed on April 13, Sunday.
Thanks so much for all your help in the past and if I can ever help with anything I would be glad to do so..I hope to get back on here real soon.

Hi Susan,
Yes, I am a member of the fiv group..I never posted much there, but I read
alot..there is alot of info in the archives there. You have to be approved and
give your kitties complete history. It is well worth it though..
Bandy was on all the things you mentioned + many more..I always gave him 30mg
Co Q 10 daily. I really believe the folic acid helped the anemia. I used some
more immune vitamins from onlynaturalpet.com. If you need any more info, you
can email me direct.
Are you in Texas? We are in Stephenville just west of Ft. Worth. He got
500mg lysine daily, too. The fiv never really gave him problems..I think all
were related to felv.
  Good luck,

Hi Susan,
My Bandy was double pos..If you are lucky as we were, the fiv will never be a
factor..You can search the archives for Bandy..His worst problem was recurring
fevers for almost 1 1/2 yrs..He developed ringworm for the last 6 months and
had anterior uveitis..So we battled both of those as well..he was on alpha
interferon daily for the last yr of his life..I had him on a good diet, supps
and meds when needed...He never had another infection after the initial UTI
11/2 yrs prior to his death. He was around 7 yrs old. His Interenal med
specialist said he would die from severe anemia, but I think when we used
procrit, it helped and he was never anemic again. I gave him quite alot of
folic acid in his food..pet tinic daily with his interferon. I wish that I had
tried immunoreglan (sp). Anyway, please feel free to email me if you [EMAIL

  Sally, how is Junior?
Glenda, I tried to email you direct about Bandy, but it wouldn't go..So you
can check the archives about his history..He was around 51/2 when he started
having problems...no other signs until then. He lived another 11/2 yrs before
liver failure took him..It is a rather long story. He was such a trooper..We
had our ups and downs, but for the most part as I think back, he really had
more good days than bad..He just wouldn't let it get him down..except for awful
fevers that he had. I did get them under control with dex as he needed it. He
did get ringworm and that was an awful mess, but we just kept on going.
My best to you all and I hope all your kitties are doing well today.

I know I haven't been on here much in awhile so I don't really know what is
going on at this point..But if it weren't for the people on this list Bandy and
I would'nt have made it as far as we did. I agree that this list should be for
the purpose of us sharing our knowledge about what we have each been through
with our Felv, fip, and fiv kitties...Each and everyone of us get a different
response with our kitties but with all the knowledge on this list, it gives us
much more hope and many more things to try for our kitties.. I have been on
many other lists while Bandy was with me, but I learned more right here than
anywhere else...the people on this list are more caring and pull together when
needed..It, to me, has been like one big family so I really hope it will stay
that way..I try to read when I can. I hope all the group will stay as I have
known it since 2005. I will always be available to help when I can..

Hi all,
I know I haven't been here in awhile, but I always come back as you guys are

I lost Albert today, May 15 a few minutes before 4pm. He went into sudden

He hadn't been sick until yesterday as he started showing some signs of maybe
a urinary tract infection which turned out to be his heart..probably due to
some long standing hyper-t.
He was felv-. We added his sister, Alberta to CLS back in Jan. I just
wanted him there with her. I also lost Striper (hit by a car) on April 16. So
it hasn't been a good year so far.

Re: Luy not eating

2007-02-03 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle,
I haven't had a chance to catch up on all of this, but I read that someone
said stay on dex...I would have to agree with this..I don't think the fevers
are from the dex..That would be almost impossible..I think..
Is she drinking on her own at all? I would stay with the clindamycin, dex,
feline interferon and epogen.. Have you recently given her immuno-regulin?
Bandy received all those things except the feline interferon at the same time
and always with good results...They always mentioned he had FIP, but I would
just disagree with them..guess cause his tests didn't really reflect it at the
specialist..Commits were always made about it at his local vet..
When Bandy wouldn't eat...I would do as I am sure you are..try
everything..Kitten food would work sometimes when all else failed..he was on
hills kitten food most of the time anyway..
But I would buy can kitten food..and even offer him other not so good smelly
things...Just getting him to eat anything would sometimes make him turn the
corner to go back on his regular diet.. The egg yolk, white karo and evap
milk..sometimes would work, too..I don't know how Lucy's IBD would handle that
though..Have you tried cat-sure?
  Prayers are coming your way,

Re: fever question

2007-01-31 Thread Kerry Roach
Bandy got dex injections in the beginning as often as twice a week, but then
when we realized the fevers were going to be on going, I got the pills...which
wasn't as strong as the injectable. They were worried he would develope
diabetis, but I wanted him to be able to eat and feel good...the dex did this
for him..I always thought and believed that it was more important that he ate
good and got all of his supps in his food...if diabetis came along then we
would deal with that if it happened...He never had any type of infection
though such as URI or UTI or anything else...almost his worse problem was the
ringworm until the last week...His dex pills were only .75mg...and I could keep
his temp down as long as 8 to 10 days with them..The shots work much faster...I
remember taking him to the vet with 106+ temp..he was out of it...but when we
would leave and only get 2 blocks away, he was up looking out the window
enjoying the ride...Anyway, I hope you can get some pills to use
at home to give Lucy a boost..It will be well worth it..and maybe if she can
eat some more she will feel better as Bandy always did..
  Our prayers are with you,
  Kerry, Angel Bandy and Inky

I forgot to mention that when Inky has a really bad flare with the IBD, I
give him 1/4 dex and that works great for him..I do it for a couple of days
then put him back on the pred..He is on 10mg pred, I guess for long term now..

Re: Please pray for Lucy

2007-01-28 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle,
I hope Lucy is eating and feeling better today..I am behind as usual..I was
wondering if they sent the blood off to be checked for toxo...When Bandy first
saw the eye spec., that was the first test he wanted to do and really only
thing Bandy hadn't been checked for in the past..Here in TX they usually send
everything to Texas A and M, but this time they sent it to Colorado..it took
awhile to get the results, too..He was negative..If they haven't done the toxo
blood test, they should...cause that would eliminate unnecessary meds that Lucy
might not need right now...and I believe that was some of Bandy's problems near
the end...too many meds...which I believe caused the liver failure..He couldn't
process all the things he was getting..
Also, my kitty that had lymphoma lived on 20mg of pred daily the rest of her
life..along with her several months of chemo..They used adriamycin for
her..with great results..She was in remission for almost 9 months..How much
pred is Lucy on now?
I read some where that you were using the Merck vet book..I have a new one
and use it all the time..Check it for FIP and toxo and anything else if you
haven't already..The IBD section is really good as well..It has the protocol
that we are using for Lucy and Inky. Also it mentions using dex daily for
IBD.. .22mg per kg. I found that quite helpful..
Bandy also had non-regenerative anemia...I put him on folic acid from the
health food store..800mcg pills...I would sprinkle some on every meal he
ate...I really believe along with the epogen and added supps it helped
him..cause his internal med specialist said anemia would be his ultimate fate,
and it wasn't..His PCV would drop at times to around 20, but then go right back
up to 30+..He only received epogen for around 5 wks..and he had quick results
which isn't usually the case..His PCV went up rather fast..
He was also on Co Q 10 30mg daily along with 2 other supps that I got from
onlynaturalpet.com. feline immune system support and extra strength immune and
antioxidant support...I would alternate those 2. Vit E 400mg weekly.. 500mg
L-lysine daily
I am sorry to go on and on, but I am just trying to see if any of these
things might be something that might help Lucy.. I guess you remember he was on
interferon mixed with liqui-tinic (which is a good iron support) daily..I mixed
1/2 cc of this with his interferon..
Prayers are with you and Lucy,
  Kerry, Angel Bandy and Inky

I am also in Texas...I would really like to know where you can get them without
a script, too..I do know a few places that will let you get a few things..but
never what I actually need.
We use Roadrunner Pharmacy in Phoenix for all compounding prescriptions...All
the things that I got for Bandy and Inky are around $34.95 per month..I also
have liquid baytril and pred. If I have needed to use several meds at the same
time, we get it all in one bottle..with what ever flavor they like..Shipping is
included in this price and they ship 2nd day UPS..and sometimes, over night
them..but you usually have to pay extra for that..I get all my transdermals
from them as well...They have been really great for us..and I have been using
them since summer of 2005..My vet calls in the script and they ship directly to
me..they will call me for the payment info and shipping address..I highly
recommend them..
  877-518-4589 or 623-434-1180
I have been lucky that my vet will give several refills on them so all I do
is call directly to re-order. (they are good for 1 yr)
  Hope this helps,

Re: Please pray for Lucy

2007-01-28 Thread Kerry Roach
I think the epogen worked in less than 2 wks...They all said that was very fast
as it usually takes longer..He was at 20 and it went to over 32 in around 10
days. He was only on it for around 5 wks..as when he went to the specialist,
the pcv had already dropped again to 23..so she stopped it due to he might have
been going to develope antibodies to it..which usually happens if they are on
it too long..We stopped and were going to use it again later if he needed it,
but he never did...Then all I know is maybe the folic acid and other supps that
I gave him helped...I would break open the cap and sprinkle some on every
meal..It was hard to tell for sure how much he was getting, but the cap would
be gone in 2 days or less..I just sprinkled a small amount on all meals...I
would up Lucy's though..
I would probably up the pred, too just in case you think you are dealing with
some sort of cancer (lymphoma).
I sure hope you get some dex pills...my vet just wrote a script for me and I
had it filled. I am going to ask for some more just in case I need it for
Inky..
Bandy's pcv was 32 just days before he passed away and for the most part had
been in the 30's for the last yr except on a few occasions when we had it
checked..
I know we used 1 bottle and part of another at a different strength... He got
.07 of the first bottle then the other was .14..so I am thinking now that he
was on it maybe 6 wks..I would have to look back at his records..
Hope I haven't totally confused you..Wish I could be of more help..

Re: Lucy--what to do?

2007-01-19 Thread Kerry Roach
Michelle,
This is a tough one for sure..What tests are they waiting results for?
Bandy received epogen for 6 wks, and his anemia was non-regenerative...but
you know what it worked..We did this before we ever saw the internal med
specialist..his pcv went up rather fast considering things, too...it was around
20 and went to over 30 in less than 2 wks.. We stopped it after we saw the
specialist as it had started back down again only to go up again on its own..So
I am going to talk to his specialist and run all this by her to she what she
has to say about how he responded to things we did until his passing..His
ultimate fate was to be uncontrolable anemia and you know what...that wasn't
what happened..
She did tell me that he could have developed antibodies to the epogen, but he
didn't ..I think I remember them saying that could be stopped when you stop the
epogen..Did they do a bone marrow aspirate to see what type of anemia she
has..?? I think it is a retic count, too. This will tell about the type of
anemia..
I don't know really whether you should start the epogen or not..
I don't think the FOI would hurt though..
Guess you have tried all types of food, too..I am still just trying to figure
out anything that might help her..
Keep us posted and you are in our prayers,
  Kerry, Angel Bandy and Inky

Hi Michelle,
I have to agree that Nina said it all...and she is right...Your gut will tell
you...Spend time with her and try not to panic...I will always regret what I
did with Bandy because I did panic..

Re: Lucy-- what to do?

2007-01-19 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle,
Do you have any a/d? Appetite stimulants?
I went into panic mode when I took him to the hospital for IV fluids and they
had to keep him. We had been doing sub-q's and I should have continued them as
he wasn't that bad off until some things went wrong while he was there..Since
it was over Christmas and no regular vet tech was there only a kennel
tech...who could administer meds but I don't think very well...as one time she
was going to give Bandy a shot and said what and how much..and I told her that
was too much...she really didn't seem to know...then a few other things
happened..It is a long story and much different situation than yours..I know
something went wrongvery wrong from the time I saw him on Christmas eve
11am until I went back again at 1pm..And I will always believe it is something
she did cause there was too much of a drastic change in him and his condition
wasn't that bad at 11am..He was sitting up purring and talking to me and eating
for me...
I'm sorry to go on about this, but I have been having nightmares about it ever
since..So I just want you to make sure to not panic and do what you can for her
with your knowledge and things at home where she will feel more comfortable and
all..I think you know what I mean.
You will know if she needs to go for more help at the vet..
I have already been through a couple of ordeals with Inky without rushing off
to the vet..just using what I have here at home..
I still believe some dex would do her wonders...as it always did for Bandy
with those dreaded fevers...and you know we battled them for months and
months..Infection or not..I have seen it do wonders..
I'll keep checking back on your guys,
  Kerry, Angel Bandy and Inky

Michelle,
I am sorry to hear Lucy isn't doing so well yet..I don't know why they won't
give you some dex or give her a dex injection..I know it works the fastest to
reduce the temp..It is almost standard procedure from any vet I have used for
dogs or cats here..It also hits any inflammation that might be going on more
rapidly, too..at least until you can get a firm diagnosis, it always helps.
Bandy's temp never would go down much with an incease in pred. Anyway, I hope
you get the answers at the specialist.. We will pray than it isn't wet fip or
lymphoma.

Re: Prayers needed for Lucy-- very serious

2007-01-18 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle,
Believe me I know exactly how you are feeling right now.. What sort of
infection does she have? Or do they know? URI? I guess I don't understand why
they won't give at least one initial dose of dex to bring the temp down and
help increase her appetite.
Have you tried any fancy feast? Inky can tolerate small amounts of the
salmon and shrimp..I put his pills in that, but only about a tsp..cause he
could eat the whole can..It doesn't cause loose stool or anything as long as I
keep it to that amount. Sometimes, I mix a little with his turkey just to give
the added flavor they crave..
I'm just searching for some things that I have tried that might work for
her..also, karo syrup mixed with some warm water might give her a little boost,
too..
I hope she will rest so she will feel better soon..
You are in our thoughts and prayers,

Re: urgent-- fever advice needed

2007-01-17 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle,
I am sorry I couldn't respond to this sooner. If you remember, Bandy had
recurring fevers for well over a year...often as high as 106+.. After awhile
of taking him to the vet, I had a prescription of .75mg dex for use at home...I
would give him 1/2 pill at times and the temp would drop within 3
hours..sometimes, we would use the whole pill depending on how high it was and
how he was acting..He didn't have any sort of infection going on though, but
the dex is the drug they use to bring it down either way..I haven't had a
chance to read all the responses yet either.. I did read that someone wrote
about alcohol rub which is good as well as ice packs on their head..
Pred sometimes works to bring it down but not as fast as dex..
I have an ear thermometer and it didn't read as well at times either..It was
.4 off from the rectal at the vet..but I got to where I could tell about
Bandy's temp since he had it almost every 8 days like clock work..
I do hope all is well now..If you can get some pill form dex, it is a good
thing to have on hand..I have always tried to keep some here as it is good to
have in case of shock or any sort of emergency..

2007-01-14 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Sally,
I saw that you wrote that Junior runs a temp...Bandy had an on going fever
for over 14 months..I treated him at home with 1/2 of a .75mg dexamethasone.
The temp would be around 105 and within 3 hrs it was back to normal 101 or
so..I had an ear thermometer which was much easier for me to use at home since
Bandy didn't like the temp being taken..I got to where I could tell though just
by the way he acted..His head would be hot and his shoulders, too..Then I would
take it and sure enough, it would be sky high..If it was over 105, I would go
ahead and give him the whole pill...long term use of steroids was him becoming
a diabetic. That never happened though..At first, I rushed him to the vet, but
then we got to where I could just treat it at home with lower dose dex..which
was better for the long term.
Hope Junior is feeling better today and that the eye meds are working for
him..Keep me posted and email me any time..

Bandy was getting transdermal oxazepam for appetite stimulant..It worked great

Inky (20 yr. old) on it when he doesn't eat well..There haven't been any ill

Lucy and IBD

2007-01-02 Thread Kerry Roach
hi Michelle,

I am sorry to hear Lucy isn't doing so well right now..Inky has had some
really bad bouts lately, too..I would, like Nina, suggested stay with the raw
diet or mush..Inky is still on 10mg of pred now as his vet said to keep him
there if it is working..So maybe you just need to up Lucy's pred some more
until the symptoms pass. I know the larger dose has always worked for Inky
when he has had really bad bouts of this..I use pepcid transdermal daily for
him...but I do have reglan, too..It makes him too sleepy so I don't give him
but 1cc which is equal to 1mg at a time when I have to.
It seems to me when there is a big flare up that they are probably having
some really bad pain in the stomach or intestines same as we do when we have
the flu or something..And if you can get the inflammation under control, I
think it helps them..It seems to Inky anyway..
I think it just makes him feel better..
After Inky's recent bouts, I am only feeding him almost all raw turkey and
some grilled chicken..He gets his meds in tsp of fancy feast twice a day and
this isn't causing him a problem..He is also eating sensitve stomach and i/d
dry foods without any problems..so go figure that one..Who knows, but as long
as it works for him guess I will let him eat it..
I do hope Lucy feels better real soon...Keep us posted..

Re: Sorry

2006-12-30 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Sally,
I do hope the eyes get better..I just wanted you to know that it did make a
world of difference in Bandy's eyes..He was on gentacin, too as he did have an
ulcer on 1 eye, but as soon as it cleared she put him on antibiotic drops that
had dex in it..They didn't work so when we switched to the prednisolone drops,
it gave him almost immediate relief..It was truly amazing..The specialist said
that is the drug of choice for anterior uveitis..I could only find it around
here at Walgreens and it was around 16.00. (lasted a long time)
Does he have something called fibrin in his eye? It looks like something is
inside the eyeball...and it is brown..the pred drops cleared all this up.
  Keep me posted.

Re: Sorry

2006-12-29 Thread Kerry Roach
I am probably getting in on the tail end of this, but I did see anterior
uveitis mentioned..
Bandy had this..If you will go check, the treatment that Bandy did worked...I
talked to his eye specialist as recent as last Fri. as Bandy was to get
check-up for eyes 1st of Jan..His spec was very pleased with his progress..
Back when I first took him...they did a toxo test...sent it off to Univ. of
Colo..instead of Texas A and M..to check for that..Bandy was negative on that
so we continued on with the treatment and it worked...
We did frequently check for ulcers on the eye surface as the steroids will
irritate that alot and you can't use them while an ulcer is present...
I tell you one thing though...Bandy regained his sight after treatment was
started. He would have remained on those drops the rest of his life anyway,
but we went from 4 drops per eye a day to 1 drop every 3 or 4 days...A
remarkable improvement...
Please check the archives for Bandy's treatment and I hope this will help..
you must have regular glaucoma check ups though for rest of pets life..as the
steroids can cause this with long term use...

2006-12-25 Thread Kerry Roach
I don't know today...On Sunday I went in the morning when the tech was there
and he seemed good and even ate some dry sensitive stomach for me...then I went
back about 2 hrs later and he was in alot of pain so I asked if she could call
the vet to get some pain meds...then she did and he was knocked out so I had to
leave..I wanted him to rest, but when she gave him the injection he just had
watery stool laying there...it was a mess so I cleaned him up myself..I think
the stress of it all...
Anyway she called me today 9am but whne I got there around 10 or lil after
nobody was there..so I don't know what to think cause yesterday it took her
around 6 hrs to do all the kennels as they have about 40 animals boarded
there...I Just hate this...
I have to bring him home later today as we have to leave for Dallas at 5:30
am...
Maybe she just went in to medicate the ones that needed it and then when to
do Christmas with her family and will come back after lunch..I hope..
I don't want them to give him any more reglan as it just knocks him out...I
think that is why he got so unalert yesterday after I was there the first time
cause she had given him inj before I went back so the reglan probably made him
drowsey...his legs hurt him and he was just crying alot...I knew he was in
pain...so I hope that helped him..
  Please keep the prayers coming...
Merry Christmas to you all...Hope all your fur babies are well today...and
can have some turkey...I am going to try to get Bandy to eat some when I get
him home and Inky, too..

Bandy is in the hospital now..He had a very bad night..he threw up once and
still has watery stool...So I took him today even though they are closed, I
caught the vet tech there so she called his doctor..at this point she said he
needed IV fluids which I have to agree...I just don't like him being away..I
can go visit twice a day when techs are there...since the doctor will be out of
town for couple of days...
Anyway, the vet actually came in to put the IV in so I am glad of that and
she called me twice..last time was to let me know that she put some c/d in
there and he went right after it..
I couldn't get him to eat at all since noon on Fri...so she knew I would want
to hear that and it did make me feel better...
We just have to get him feeling better for the trip to Dallas on Tues so we
can find out what is going on here and get on the right track..
He is a fighter and I can see in his eyes, he isn't ready to give up...
He did eat about a tsp of i/d for me this morning before I took him...
Please keep praying for him to feel better..
That is all the Christmas present I need...for my Bandy to be better and back

mention it to them, but they didn't say to much when I took him in today so
when I go visit tonight, I may just take some with me and sneak it in cause he
won't get any other meds at that time...I know people sprinkle it on food so I

Hi guys,
Thanks for the info..I don't know what we are going to do now..I guess hope
all goes well until we go to Dallas on Tues very early.. No vet will be
available here so I have to do my best with what I have at home now..until we
get there on Tues..I took BAndy today as I thought she was going to check him
again, but ended up being for just more fluids..he has really big pouches on
both sides...is that ok...he seems miserable from it..But I think that is what
they wanted to do as I can't give them at home as I don't really have anyone to
help me and I can't hold him alone...
He did eat whole can of I/d yesterday and some grilled chicken breast...He
won't eat the raw food like Inky gets for IBD...Well, Inky eats mostly grilled
chicken now but will eat raw turkey..
Bandy had about 5 very waterly stools yesterday and thru the night about 5 to
6 hours apart..He went looking for his food bowls last night too since I had
taken them all out of his room he was searching the floor...I really hate not
to feed him what he wants...but with this diarrhea, I don't know what else to
do but keep him on raw food and or i/d...I have sensitive stomach, too, but
don't know if that is ok...
I will mention to specialist on tues about IR...
Any other help would be appreciated
Have any of you used albon and metronidazole together...I searched the whole
site here yesterday for any help on diarrhea and meds for it...really just all
I could find...I don't think Bandy has IBD, I really hope it is just a bad
infection..Also, she has him on doxycycline.
I guess this is about it for now..I am going to call them before they close
to ask again about giving him albon, too and dex if he starts a fever over the
next 3 days...It is going to be a long next few days until Tues. morning...then
3 1/2 hr drive up there...
Wendy, if you see this...he is going to animal diagnostic clinic in
Plano...same place he went before and same doctor..
Bandy's temp this morning was 100.2 so maybe we are getting the infection
under control...I hope...
  My best to you all,

I had to take Bandy back to the vet today. His temp was already back up to
103.8. Also, he has runny stool now worse than before..He has never had
this...So she changed his meds again and didn't want to give another dex inj so
I suggested depo-medrol...so we will see what that does..Anyway, she called his
internal med spec and she is out till Tues but we could have gotten into
another doctor on Fri, but I can't go as it is about 8 hrs up and back..so I
hope I am doing the right thing by waiting for his regular specialist. She
added doxycycline to his meds along with metronidazole..He got some more fluids
since we were there...I am beginning to think he has a gastro problem now and
really hope it isn't lymphoma..I hope it is just an infection..since all the
blood work was normal maybe it will end up being an intestinal infection...
Anyway, thanks for your continued prayers for my Bandy..

2006-12-17 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi everyone,
Well, so far so good...I went shopping with some friends after I got Bandy
home from the vet on Sat..as that is hard for me to do when he is so sick, but
I thoughthe has had all the meds he can get for the day along with subq
fluids..I thought it might be best that he rest and I leave him alone so he can
do that..When I returned 12 hrs later, he was sitting up in his bed and had
eaten some dry food along with little can food and some grilled chicken liver.
I sat in the floor with him and he talked to me and was purring again..I don't
know what tomorrow will bring, but I am hoping he is on the mend..Along with
him having this leg problem which seems much better, I think he has a mild URI
cause a couple of wks ago, Inky was sneezing and he is in the opposite end of
the house from Bandy, but I was around him and probably spead it to Bandy since
it wouldn't take much for him to come down with anything..Bandy did sneeze a
few times the last few days but has no runny nose
or eyes..I really think there might be something to that..Any opinions about
that??
Thanks Nina and Michelle for the info.. I will check out the oli-vet later
today. And I am going to talk to his vet on Monday about the IR..I am going to
see if she won't give him the .25 dose. Do you know if there are any side
effects with any other meds being given at the same time? He is on adequan for
the inflammation in the leg which is done in the muscle, I think..he will get
it again on Tues and for 3 more wks..Also, what about the interferon along with
the IR..? That is one thing he gets daily and has since July, 2005.
Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers..Ours are with you all, too.

Prayers needed for Bandy

2006-12-16 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi everyone,
My Bandy has been very sick this week..First, we are still fighting the
ringworm, but it is our least worry for now..He starting getting limp in one
rear leg as he did back in the summer..So I took him in on Tues. and he
received basically same treatment as in the summer...He got some dex, adequan,
B vit inj, and torbutrol for pain..His temp was 103.5 which is the highest it
has been since Aug..he did seem to respond as he came home, ate ok and
drank...climbed up on his tower and would purr and talk to me..Then on Fri. or
really late Thurs night, he wouldn't eat at all or move about much..So I took
him back to the doctor Fri afternoon...His temp was still around 103 which
could explain the bad appetite, but I didn't know what else to do and still
don't...
So the vet tech called the Doctor since she is off on Fri..we ran a complete
blood chem and profile and thyroid...He hasn't had all that since June so we
were due...It didn't help us much either...Surprising enough his PCV was 37.5
which is great...the WBC was low normal...some other blood values grans and
monocytes were off which I don't know what all that means..his platlets were
very low...Anyone know anything about that
I'm really scared for him now...He doesn't seem to have URI or UTI and no
mouth ulcers..no stomach trouble either..He did have a loose stool couple of
times the other day. Probably from all the meds on Tues..
I can't get him to eat...I have tried everything...He will eat a few bites at
a time and won't drink any broth either..I don't know what else to
try...Please let me know what you all think.
He also got 250cc subq fluids..today and 2 different antibiotic injections
along with 5mg pred which we are going on for a week..and if he won't eat I am
to up it to 10mg..also oxazepam for appetite stimulant...
Please keep him in your prayers..
I hope all your kitties are doing well...we send head butts to all..

2006-12-16 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for your prayers. We just got back from the vet again..His
temp was 105.5 Sat. So they called the vet and we gave him 2cc of dex along
with another polyflex and baytril injection..He got some metronidazole as he
has a loose stool...I never could get him to eat on Fri so I did force some a/d
with a syringe down him..He seems to hurt all over again. He also got another
250cc subq fluids..
He did sit up for the ride home, but wasn't interested in anything when we
got home really..He did nibble on a few pieces for dry food and a couple of
bits of can. I am hoping all the dex will kick in really soon to get the temp
down and he will eat..
Nina, where did you buy the oli-vet, natural antibiotic? I haven't had time
to check the 2 places I use for supps, but would appreciate the info.
Michelle, No we haven't done the IR, but am considering it Monday if the
temp will go down..did it make Lucy have a rise in temp? I know it can so we
would really need Bandy's temp to be down for it..I agree with you...I should
try it...Also, what dosage? Do you think
.25cc would be ok first time then repeat how often? I just haven't had time
to go look back to see what you told me the last time..So if you could let me
know again, I would really appreciate it.. Do you give it 3 or 4 times with a
few days in between?
  Also, any other thoughts...
  We will keep you posted..
  Thanks again.

in Sept. got the pain patch..fentonyl or something like that...the only thing I
noticed about that was it really irritated his skin...it was really red..the
vet commented that wonder why it did that??? He had it for several days.
  Anyway, hope this helps..

Hi Sally,

Bandy also takes when needed torbutrol for pain. I was always told to only
give 1/4 of a baby aspirin every 3 to 4 days., but I don't recommend aspirin.
not even at the low dose...
He was always checked for cornea abrasions when he sees the vet..just in case
there is an ulcer on the eye surface...as steroid drops can cause severe
problems if there is an ulcer on the eye..It wasn't painful for them to do
this..it is a drop they put in his eye then turn off the lights and if there is
an ulcer, it will show up as a darker spot when you look at them..We had to
back off the steroid drops once due to this...as they can scratch their eyes or
something can get into it to make a small ulcer which usually heals quite
rapidly then you resume the steroid drops...
I hope they will give you what Bandy had as it worked wonders for him...As I
mentioned, he is only getting drops once every few days now...as long term we
face glaucoma. So when I take him to his specialist they always check for
that...check the pressure in the eye..
  Please keep us posted..
  Prayers are with you two,

Re: Uveitis

2006-12-02 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Sally,

My Bandy has uveitis, and we have been dealing with it since around Feb. this
year.. We tried all sorts of things at first as he did have an eye infection so
he was mostly on antibiotic eye drops until that cleared then we added the dex
drops. He just kept getting worse and went almost all the way blind..So I took
him to an eye specialist in Dallas..
He changed the meds and Bandy had almost immediate relief and most of his
vision returned even though the doctor thought he had only a slim chance for
recovery...
He changed the med to prednisolone ac 1% ophth susp. He was getting 1 to 2
drops per eye 3 to 4 times a day..the fibrin went away almost immediately. We
also used atropine ointment or you can use the drops to try to keep the pupils
from getting fixed. Bandy's pupils are permanetly fixed now but he can see..I
don't think he has alot of depth perception, but he can climb and get around
great now..I haven't taken him back for a re-check since the summer and we are
past due..and hoping to go soon as I can get this ringworm thing under control
again..he is FIV+ Felv+ so we have dealt with alot of things..
I would suggest that you try this med as it is what works best for this..We
need to have glaucoma tests repeated as often as possible as it can cause
that...Bandy is on 1 drop every 3 days now and it seems to be working..I am
going to contact his doctor next week and will keep you posted as to what our
next move is for now..
Hope this helps..It was amazing for Bandy..
Let me know if you need any more info about it..
  Kerry, Bandy and Inky

I forgot to mention that after about 1 month they decreased the dosage for
Bandy to 1 drop twice and day..and I think I told you that he is on it every 3
days now..

Bandy and Inky update

2006-11-17 Thread Kerry Roach
Well, it has been one of those weeks...First, Bandy...I got up Wed. and Bandy
had rubbed all the hair off the right side of his face..He has ringworm again
and I got the fulvicin started again last Fri.. It takes several days for it to
start working so here we go again...I took him to the vet and he has an ear
infection which has caused him to rub his face..so now he is off the otomax as
it seems to make him shake his head worse and rub his face..So he is on
clavamox so we hopefully won't get a skin infection...He didn't have a temp
either so that is a good thing...Anyway, I hope we are on the mend
again...After Thanksgiving I am going to board him for the day and get some
help to really clean his room with lots of bleach...to try to get rid of this
stuff...I don't have any place to keep him so that is all I can...wish him luck
Inky is now on low dose metronidazole..daily.. .3cc liquid or 1/8 pill
whichever he will take for the day..it does help him. This week he is feeling
bad one day and ok the next so I dont' know what to think..I guess it is the
IBD that gives him the most trouble...When all else fails, he will eat mash
potatoes..guess it feels good on his stomach...the K/D seems to make him sick
anymore and he really likes it..But we can't have him throwing up all the time
either...He is drinking ok broth and water..
Please keep the prayers coming for my 2 boys..We are doing the same for you..
  Head butts to all...
  Thanks again,
  Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Prayers needed for Inky -- to Hideyo

2006-11-14 Thread Kerry Roach
Thanks guys for the info.. I think Inky doesn't tolerate sub-q fluids cause he is so tiny or something or maybe his heart..She didn't say anything about a heart murmur..so I just don't know why..I know he does very well on IV fluids as they let me bring him home each day after he was hooked up for 8 or so hours...then I would take him back next morning and do it again..He would get 20cc per hour that way..so at least 160+ per day...I read on the CRF board last night that one lady takes her cat twice a week for IV fluids...so I guess it all depends on the kitty on how and what they tolerate...Does he still need the sub-q's if he is drinking around 200 to 300 cc a day... I measure his broth and he drinks bottled water...He usually drinks around 200cc broth a day and water on top of that..He really doesn't pee too much..I think it is about even to what he drinks..My past renal kitties peed alot and wouldn't drink as much as Inky..So I was hoping that if he
drank enough on his own, that would be ok..Let me know what you think about this...I know when he did get sub-q'a before, he wouldn';t drink much at all...So which is better for him??? The drug to keep the BUN down is azodyl and I am going to get it for him..It is in a cap so it could not be compounded..the other drug for phosphorus is epakitin...I don't think he needs that as of yet..but we will continue to watch it... He played with his mouse again last night a couple of times..so guess he is feeling ok for now..fingers crossed it continues...Had a bowel movement and it was normal...color and firmness... Anyway thanks again and I will keep you posted.. Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re:Prayers needed for Inky

2006-11-13 Thread Kerry Roach
Michelle, We are going to put Inky on metronidazole long term..about 30mg daily so I hope that will help with that..I talked to my vet today about what you are doing for Lucy and she has had other kitties on similiar protocols. As for the salt
in the diet, I read in one of my natural health books that some is good to stimulate thirst so they will drink more...My vet didn't really seem to think that would hurt as it is in the chicken broth that I give him, too..I also give him some salt sub at times for the K CL since he doesn't really like tumil K very well..His K levels weren't low though.. Anyway, I bought him a new toy and he really loves it...I guess it is amazing that he will still play...It has a mouse that spins around sorta like those with the ball that spins...I didn't really know if he would even look at it..but he talks to it and messes with it for a little while..some exercise is good for him and I am sure he knows his limits.. i did the wrong thing adding peas as he didn't digest them so that won't happen again...I will keep him on broth, chicken/turkey and mashed potatoes..He ate crackers today...Keep fingers crossed that his bowels will heal so he can
keep eating to keep his kidneys flushed...It all goes together...I guess..Cindy, I have had Inky and my other older kitties on Hills K/D for several yrs...I only feed Hills and have for years...My dogs are on K/D right now as a preventive just like my older kitties..My dogs are also 11 1/2 yrs. I started feeding Hills yrs ago since my cats use to get FUS all the time...since we changed to strictly Hills no more FUS...haven't dealt with it in yrs..I know it might not be the best, but it is alot better than most store bought foods...I believe in all natural but that takes alot of time.. My dogs have been on Hills since birth and have hardly ever been sick..So really I guess it is a personal preference, but I highly recommend it..Hope your puppy stays well.. Remember, low protein for failing kidneys. Thanks for all your support and prayers, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Prayers needed for Inky - to Hideyo

2006-11-13 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Hideyo, Thanks for the info..I did join the CRF group, but haven't posted there only go read when I can.. I need to go back and look for some things. Inky's values are as follows...(some of them) PCV 31.9 normal BUN 95 high Creatinine 5.8 high Phosphorus was in the normal range about midway...I don't have it in front of me but it was ok..back in Aug. when all this started it was actually low.. Almost everything else was normal except liver values somewhat elevated.. He at this time doesn't need phosphorus binders..We have discussed it though just in case..They were looking at an azotemia med, but it can't be compounded down..It is some new med that will help keep the BUN and Creatinine lower...they called compounding pharmacy today and it couldn't be done...Have you heard anything about a drug like this? Or something
similiar...?? Right now, we are going to watch him and I guess I have to make sure he drinks enough and doesn't have nausea..He is on transdermal pepcid daily. Any other things that I should watch for, please let me know... Thanks for the info.. Hope all your kitties are doing well today.. Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Prayers needed for Inky

2006-11-12 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi guys, Thanks so much for the prayers.. Inky had the IV pulled Sat around 5pm so now we hope it worked...They are going to get him some sort of new med that keeps the BUN and creatinine down..Guess I will find out Monday about that as I think it has to come from a compounding pharmacy.. Michelle, I am going to ask her about keeping him on the lower dose of metronidazole for awhile, too...I think it would help him since loose stool can't be good for his kidneys either.. Inky is supposed to be on the Hills k/d but since his stomach IBD flare up, I have only fed him some I/D, but not much...Here is his current diet and I know most will think it is nuts, but he likes it..and I think it is much better for him..He is eating grilled chicken breast and mashed potatoes...with some chicken broth added at times. I also added english peas to it today...and am going to add carrots and green beans in the next few days..only a
few mashed up in the potatoes..One of my natural books suggests that for IBD and kidneys, too..He likes french fries, too..He has always eaten chips of any kind when I am eating them so the added salt is good so it will make him drink more... I put Bandy back on fulvicin today as the ringworm is starting up again.. I think that drug made him feel better for some reason so that may be why he hasn't felt so good lately..I took him off it couple of wks ago when he got sick stomach/ loose stool, too..All that I have read about it says it isn't good for an FIV kitty, but seems to make him feel better so I don't know what to do about it..He needs to go get an eye checkup, but I haven't had the chance to go to Dallas lately as it makes for a very long day...I am going to call for appt on Monday though so maybe I can get him in right after Thanksgiving. Anyway, thanks again for all your support..and info.. Kerry, Bandy and

Prayers needed for Inky

2006-11-11 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi everyone, I have been out of touch this last week as Inky has been sick...He is my boy that is 20yrs 3 months and isn't felv+. Anyway, we were fighting the IBD last weekend. I thought he was getting better, but then he just wouldn't eat..And he never goes off his good entirely so I took him in this last Tues..the blood work showed again that his kidney values were elevated..BUN and creatinine were way up..so he has been on IV fluids since Wed. 8am til 5pm then I go get him and bring him home for the night...Today will be the last day and we will re-check his blood work..Last time he stayed in the hospital for 10 days and on IV's for about 5 of it...So this time since he doesn't tolerate sub-q's well, this would be faster and easier on him..He likes to ride so that is a good thing..I think he had a little of both IBD and kidney flare up which both made him throw up and loose stool..He is back on his chicken and broth, eating well...and talking
to me so I always know that is a good sign...He is really sick when he doesn't talk at all..It is really hard since he has to be on a kidney diet and IBD diet as I have to try to balance all this to keep both in check..What seems to be ok for one isn't for the other so I have really had to research his options so to try to keep them both ok..Any thoughts on any of this is appreciated!!! Please keep him in your prayers...also Bandy is a little under the weather lately..he isn't eating as good as I would like, but no fever. Not quite sure what is up with him just keeping a good eye on him... Thanks everyone, Head butts to all your kitties, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Lucy very sick again

2006-11-11 Thread Kerry Roach
thanks Michelle, Polyflex is some sort of penicillin, I think. I just know my local vets and even if I go to the D/FW area, vets seem to give an injection of this for infection. It is long acting so can't be given daily, maybe every other day..They do this even before they put them on daily doses of baytril or some other antibiotic...They may have given some of mine in the past that had to be hospitalized for bad infections daily shots of it along with other meds.. I will tell my vet about the metronidazole...that seems to really help Inky and I think it is exactly what he needs..cause he has to keep eating and drinking alot to keep those kidneys flushed...I give him 1/4 of a 250mg pill once a day..so he gets 62.5. am I right there..?? I have given him 1/8 before, too...they are round so not so hard to cut. Inky had gained 1/4 pound, too..up to 5# 4 oz. That was a good thing since he is so thin..He has always been small,
I guess around 71/2 to 8 in his younger days..The hyper-T doesn't help that, but his thyroid values were normal since he is on tapazole now.. Anyway, he is at the vets right now getting his last round of IV fluids and they will pull the catheter today around 5pm. He gets 20mls per hour this way and should be flushing those kidneys good...I sure hope...I am really afraid this is his fate now...he is really lucky to have good kidneys for this many years though...It always seems to be the fate of my older kitties..I have lost too many over the yrs to kidney failure...and I have learned to start my older ones on Hills k/d even before signs are there and it seems to have helped Inky.. Glad to hear Lucy is doing better... Thanks again, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Michelle, Did you try giving her flagyl? I am giving it to Inky once a day...1/8 pill is his usual dose..(250mg) He didn't even poop yesterday, but ate ok. I am back up to 10mg pred, too...I'm not so sure you shouldn't go ahead and up Lucy's pred, too even though she has URI...I gave Bandy lots of steroids at times when he had an infection going on and he did ok..cause you have to stop the diarrhea I would think.. How old is Lucy? Anyway, just my thoughts on this for now..keep us posted.. kerry, Bandy and Inky

2006-10-30 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, I hope Lucy is feeling better this morning...I just read the latest, and I agree with Nina, that she might not have needed any added fluids yet..I would give her some metronidazole if you have some...It is flagyl.. Inky has another loose stool as well so I gave him some metro and upped the pred to 10mg again...I gave him the 7.5mg on Sat, but I went ahead and started with the higher dose...He wants to eat too much is his problem...and it is very hard for me to not give him what he wants...I really think this is what started his loose stool last week..I guess it is a good thing that he meows at me and wants more, but sad on my part to not give it to him cause I know what will happen.. Anyway, I hope you get some answers when you get in touch with your vet. Keep us posted...Head butts from my crew to yours, You are in our thoughts and prayers, Kerry, Bandy and Inky..
Also, Bandy has been sick with runny stool last 5 days and have given him some metro, too...He never gets that..and he threw up, too...That is a first for him so I hope I have gotten him back on track...the ringworm meds, I think are taking a toll on him as we just can't tottally get rid of it..as yet..No fever though since Aug. 5...that was a long 14 months with the up and down fevers..So fingers crossed that it stays down...

2006-10-29 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, Antibiotics haven't seemed to bother Inky. He has been on both clavamox and baytril..So I don't know as each of our babies are different...I used slippery elm at first, but it didn't seem to help Inky. I think I told you awhile back that I tried oat bran, too.. Do you have any transdermal pepcid? I use that when Inky seems nauseated.. I am still trying to think what would be the best for Lucy, like you said you don't want to over tax her intestines..and sometimes I think it is best to give them a rest, too..Do you use appetite stimulants on her? I give Inky oxazepam instead of cyproheptidine at times..My worst problem with Inky though is that he wants to eat too much which isn't good either..I will search my med cabinet to see if I can come up with something else..Do you give her chicken broth? Hope she feels better and is eating better real soon. Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: need advice re: Lucy -- Inky

2006-10-29 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi, Inky hasn't a total loose stool except when I gave him some rebound and then another time when I gave him some clinicare RF. I knew it would do it, but my vet wanted me to try it as he needs the extra fluids to keep the kidneys flushed...He drinks plenty of chicken broth and water right now that we don't have to use subq fluids...Subq fluids make him feel really bad instead of better for about 10 hrs.. Anyway, today his stool was firm at first then the next one was sorta firm with some soft stool around it..and also, I think he throws up when he has to strain to poop. I have seen him do this in the past as I think it upsets his stomach to strain so much..Does that make sense? I have had renal failure kitties in the past and like you said they do get very nauseated and throw up alot..Inky (knock on wood) didn't throw up today...It is usually only once a day...As he only usually has 1 stool a day but today he has already had
2..He did eat alot last night...I am having to feed him K/d chicken, also i/d and his grilled chicken for now..I fix 3 bowls when I go to bed and he cleaned them all last night...I still leave dry k/d out for him , but he hasn't touched that in months..I did up the pred back to 7.5mg...I divide it as I have to give him tapazole twice daily so he gets meds in the day and night..The metronidazole works great for Inky usually...Is that what flagyl is? I couldn't remember.. Have you used science diet I/D for Lucy any? I know science diets may not be the best in the world, but I have had all my animals on it for years..with great results... Anyway, thanks for the info and I will let you know how Inky does on the upped dose of pred..I just wish I could get him down to a lower dose, but it may never be possible..Since he is so old, I may just need to leave it alone instead of trying to go down.. Re: need advice re: Lucy

2006-10-28 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, I am glad Lucy is much better..I am so far behind on reading and everyone.. I have a question...about Inky and IBD...I have had him on 10 mg pred for awhile then I went to 7.5mg for a few weeks then now we went to 5mg and he seems to be having stool problems again...one day it is hard and dry then the next it is loose and watery..so should I go back up to 7.5 for awhile??? I think I over fed him the other day as he will eat a lot...He is on feline k/d because of his kidney values being high and I do still feed him raw turkey and chicken breast. as much chicken broth as he will drink is always available...I put his pills in tsp of fancy feast so I thought the other day I gave him alittle too much as he really likes it and I'm sure misses it, too..He doesn't seem to be sick cause he purrs and follows me around...meows alot and all his usual things...I saw some where that you or Nina mentioned something about Lucy's
hair, well, Inky's hair is awful maybe cause of the hyper T, I don't know...big matts and all of what you described...He cleans himself after he eats but not a huge bath like when he was much younger...just mainly his face and all...I guess as long as he eats and purrs I try not to worry too much since he is 20...He throws up almost once a day, too..so I don't know if that is the IBD or his kidneys causing it... Let me know if you think I should just up the pred again...I don't guess it will hurt at this point..I really wanted to try to get him on a lower dose though..I forgot to mention if he gets a very loose stool I go ahead and give him some metronidazole (sp) and it always helps...It is almost like imodium for him...a couple of doses seems to always help.. Inky was on 3 wks of clavamox awhile back for a skin infection, didn't seem to bother him, but as we know they are all different...But I, too have stopped meds before the entire course of
treatment...You can always start them back.. Hope Lucy continues to do well. Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Kerry - who did you lose?

2006-10-16 Thread Kerry Roach
Michelle, I sent this to Nina..and I don't know for sure if I put all the info down as it was quite a long week...He (Tom Cat) was my barn cat..wild as can be... He was hit by a car..received a broken jaw then ended up having all sorts of problems.. Thanks for asking...Glad to hear Lucy is doing much better...I have Inky down to 5mg pred for now...and he is eating chicken K/D along with his turkey, but I put his pills in tsp of fancy feast.. Take care, KerryHi Nina, Thanks for writing as I know how difficult it is at times like these...guess that is why I didn't get on here much at all..This is sorta a long story, but here goes.. I lost Tom Cat...guess he was a feral as he had been living out at my house where I keep my goats for the last 3 yrs or so...I just started calling
him Tom Cat this year and really trying to make friends with him as he was really wild...I could finally get within 3 ft of him in the last 6 months at feeding time and he would follow me around when I would go feed..so he was I guess you could say my barn cat... I went to turn my goats out one evening but didn't have any cat food with me and he was waiting at his place for me. So I thought when I went back later that night I would bring food and he would be there. He wasn't at the time, but when we drove off, he was across the highway and had been hit by a car. I am sure he saw me turn in the drive and came across the road..I never knew of him to cross the road.. Anyway, a guy that works for me was with me and I told him that was Tom Cat so we stopped and he was hardly breathing so we picked him up on a card board box that we broke down and I took him back to work with me to call the vet. By this time it was midnight, she met me and got him
going, but he had a broken jaw and I guess some lung problem...anyway, he was responding to the dex and O2. That was on a Tues..then on Wed. he even tried to eat something, but they finally had to tube feed him..but on Thurs, I had to take him to Arlington, TX. to a 24 hr emergency place as he needed extra care..My vets staff was going to continuing education classes all weekend so no one here to see after him or feed him..He was off the O2 by this time and seemed to be doing better..Anyway, when I got him up there since he was wild they had a hard time dealing with him other than IV meds and sedation to check him out..I first asked them to felv and fiv test him before we went any farther so that all came back negative..but his PCV was 13 so since it was so late they didn't have a donor cat available so they gave him oxyglobin to keep him stable, but his PCV didn't go up either so by Sat. we did a blood transfusion and it went to 23..The dental surgeon was out
of town until Monday..they were all gone to Oregon for a seminar. Then by Wed. his PCV was going down again so I didn't know what to do and they suggested pts...cause he probably had some other underlying problem, cancer or something..since his PCV didn't stay up and he didn't have a lot of blood loss from the accident.. When the dental surgeon looked at his xrays she said he probably had some sort of tumor in there and the jaw might not heal anyway...He couldn't eat with his jaw all misaligned...I wish now that I would have just brought him home and turned him loose...but he might have died a horrible death and I didn't want that either..He hated being in that cage and all the poking around on him..He was a tough kitty as he fought them when they would try to do anything to him and I hated them sedating him every time...I saw him like that, too..I drove 140 miles everyday to see him in the ICU there from Thurs until the next Wed. (all except 1 day) I
forgot to mention they did a bone marrow biopsy and he couldn't get his RBC in circulation...he had some sort of weird anemia...but nothing to do with felv or fiv..as they tested him again and it was negative...also neg for Hemobart..They said he was probably weak is why he didn't get out of the way of the car as this problem was coming on and I wouldn't know it since he was feral. I hope I did the right thing...I know I didn't want him to suffer as he was such a good kitty. I think in a few more months he would have trusted me more and more..Anyway, I don't know if I've left anything out, but we went thru it all in a week.. Re: Lucy

2006-09-18 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, I hope Lucy is feeling better today...Yes, I use metronidazole for Inky all the time or at least when he gets a loose stool...I don't have to give him the full dose either as it seems to work like imodium works for us..I usually only have to give him a few doses (last time only 2 or 3 pills). It has been sorta touchy with him since he has (needs) to be on a kidney diet now..and he is getting Hills k/d for that and grilled chicken with lots of chicken broth...He has so many things wrong that I have had to weigh the benefits and try to figure out what things will keep all his troubles in check and so far this diet is working...He won't eat his raw turkey lately so I just keep doing this..They wanted me to give him some rebound, but I hesitated then did it...and guess what loose stool and made him feel bad cause of it...then we ordered clinicare RF, that wasn't as bad, but I can't chance it cause of the IBD. Inky is now on 7.5mg pred,
tapazole, and pepcid. I have added pedialyte to his chicken broth and he seems to like it ok.. I would use it for Lucy if she gets a loose stool as it sure seems to help Inky. Take care, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Spencer and irony

2006-09-13 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Nina, I hope Spencer is feeling better today..I have been trying to catch up on reading, but as usual, I'm behind..I did read this about the possibilty of Spencer having lymphoma..There really isn't too much expense to it to find out if it is lymphoma and you don't have to have sonograms or mri's. My internal med specialist did a special blood test that confirmed it on my City Kitty ( Inky's mom) and that was in 1997. The sonograms and exploratory surgery that my kitty had only would show where the masses were located and how large...She had the one in the middle of the intestines medistinal or something like that and it is inoperable. So she did chemo as I mentioned in my email to you. You can do sonograms to see if the chemo is working...I guess the real expense is...the treatments you do and continuing xrays and sonograms. My vet could tell by just feeling as it shrunk so I chose not to do sonograms as it would only stress her
and mainly the monthly blood work would tell us what was going on with most things..She was on 20mg pred daily the rest of her life..and she had almost a yr. We had to stop the chemo cause her blood counts were getting too low from the chemo and at that point you could do no more at the time.. Now with some other new meds on the market there may be a better chance of longer remissions with epogen and those types meds to help with the anemia. It was odd that when I found out that my kitty had lymphoma..my Mom had passed away 1 month prior to that and she had lymphoma...My kitty was treated with the same drugs that my Mom was going to get in Houston..Almost all the tests and things they did tomy Mom in 96 and up until her passing in 97 were the same as my kitty was getting..So it was really a strange ordeal to live through.. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience with you. Also, Buster had a very rapid form of it...lymphoblastic lymphoma if you
remember he got sick in Feb and passed on March 7. The lymph nodes in his neck swelled so much just over night that we never even had time to do anything for him. I had him to the vet on Fri and noticed the enlarged nodes on Sat. took him back so she aspirated it and sent it to Texas A and M vet school. We got the results on Tues and he passed just a few hours after that..so we had no time for anything..He was doing ok with no apparent signs until the last few days..That was so awful.. Let me know if I can be of any help, Our prayers are with you guys, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Hi, I just happened to have 2 people that worked for me with husbands that are on oxygen at home..(portable) so they both had extra tanks and loaned them to me with the tube. They even offered to refill them with their prescriptions but I never had to refill them..They usually lasts for 6 hrs with it set on 1 or 1.5..and I really never had to give Lil Rascal that much at once..only emergency cases.. I don't know where you can find them without a prescription, but I'm sure we can, that would be a good thing to know..But your vet can write a script and you can rent one from a medical supply place..I called here and they thought I was nuts..I think, but they can't even turn down a vet's script cause it is very legal.. If you know someone on O2, see if they won't help you out like that. Most people usually have extra tanks... Good luck with it, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

2006-09-06 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi, My Bandy is FIV and Felv +. He was tested last August, 2005 which confirmed IFA postive for both..He is doing better right now than he has in almost a year..Our worst problem for the last few months has been ringworm...He has had recurring high fevers coming on about every 8 days with only dex to bring it down..but we have now been since Aug. 5 without an elevated temp...keeping our fingers crossed for that to stay down..He has been on interferon daily since July, 2005 and many, many supplements..I have alternated lots of things in the past year..but have never failed to give him bovine colostrum in all his meals..or at least twice a day now..He has anterior uveitis which we treat now once daily with steroid drops as he was almost blind back in May..but his eye specialist is really pleased with his progress with that..I guess it is due to either the FIV or Felv or both, I don't know..I do know he was almost blind at one point and now he can
see. His pupils won't move though..they are stuck ( fixed ), but he can see. He is 6 yrs old and came to me in 2001 so I guess he was born with these diseases as he hasn't been outside since I took him in back in 2001. He had a urinary infection June, 2005 which is how all this came about cause we couldn't get it cleared up..He was on baytril for almost 10 months 1/2 dose..daily. Anyway, it is by no means a reason to give up on him..I have learned alot thru this group and you are right they are an incredible group of people... They also did many other tests on Bandy last year. sonogram and lots more blood work. He even took epogen for awhile cause his PCV was around 20..It is around 30 now and the anemia isn't causing him a problem right now..and that is what his internal med specialist said would be hisfate..If I can be of any help, please email me if you want.. Hope Cracker is doing good today,

Re: Inky update - Belinda

2006-09-06 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi, Inky just doesn't seem to tolerate the fluids, and I don't really know why..He isn't retaining any fluid as he pees alot..He is drinking around 300 to 400cc a day. I am giving him chicken broth all he wants...I measure all the fluids so I don't think he will dehydrate as long as he keeps drinking like this...I do add some water to the broth, too..I don't know if he is even drinking plain water much. The broth bowl goes empty regularly though..If he stops drinking then I will have to get the sub-q's for sure.. I just know when he gets fluids, he feels really bad for about 10 to 12 hrs..I would rather see him eating and drinking on his own than going off all of it for that time period..Does that make any sense?? I do understand how important the fluids are when you were talking about the kidney damage. When his thyroid profile was done the other day, it was in the normal range, too..as he is on 1/4 tapazole now for
hyper-t He ate an entire can of chicken k/d yesterday and some grilled chicken breast.. I feed him french fries, too..strange as it may be it is a good way for me to give him his pills..He only weighs 5 lbs now..He has never been a large kitty always around 7.5. I just don't know what to do other than keep a close eye on him to make sure he drinks enough..Let me know what you think about how much fluid he drinks. Re: Inky update - Belinda

2006-09-05 Thread Kerry Roach
I am really out of touch with things lately since Inky's been so sick. His last blood work was improved though...BUN 28 down from 79 and CRE 2.3 down from 2.9 which normal is 2.1 so that is much better...I have taken him for fluids 3 times and I am not doing it anymore...I know they need them, but he is so stressed out from it that we both can't handle it...It seems to me that his heart can't take it..He is out of it for nearly 12 hours after receiveing 100 to 150cc of fluids...He won't even get up to eat or drink..He will only go to the box..Have any of you ever had a kitty that got so out of it from fluids.. They usually make them feel better, but in Inky's case it just makes him worse...so I told his vet that I won't do it unless absolutely necessary and seems to me if he is eating good and drinking alot of water and broth without vomiting, that he should be ok...We have even put fluids evenly on both sides of him and it still makes him feel bad...I
think I am just going to keep a good eye on him and make sure he eats and drinks his broth..I give him around 110cc 3 to 4 times a day and he drinks all of it..plus water..Any thoughts on this please let me know. Thanks for all your help, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Inky update - Belinda

2006-08-31 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Belinda, I don't have Inky's last blood work papers here, but I am going to get them tomorrow..I can give you the initial tests results done on Aug. 18. I am only going to list the ones that are not in the normal range.. ALB +4.5 (2.2-4.4 G/DL) AMY +2650 (330-1100 U/L) BUN +79 (10-30 MG/DL) PHOS +9.3 (3.4-8.5 MG/DL) CRE +2.9 (.3-2.1 MG/DL) HCT 36.3 ( which is way in the middle so no signs of anemia) I was really pleased with that one.. I do remember when they re-checked his blood before I brought him home, they were around the normal range..except the amylase..AMY it was worse actually over 3000. I will post those tomorrow or as soon as I get them, but I am sure the BUN was under 30 and the creatine was around 2.3. I don't remember what the phos was at that time..I guess we will re-do blood work in a month or so,
too.. He hates sub-q fluids, I have to take him as I can't do it by myself at home. He won't let me and really gets stressed out about it..I know I am going to have to find a way to do it here..It does stress him some to take him, too, but I think it is because the fluids always go down his leg and he just can't get around too good for awhile..They talked about putting in a port so it would be easier to do at home...have you had any dealings with one of those?? I still don't think his problem is all related to his kidneys..I really believe he was having pancreatitis attack..The vomiting has stopped and he has a normal stool now. She did say he had liver failure, too, but I know the bilirubin is suppose to be elevated or not normal if that is going on and his was in the middle range of normal..I had a renal kitty in the past and I know no matter how much IV fluids we gave him the BUN and CRE never came down like this or as rapid.. Anyway,
I guess we will stay on the K/D diet and as much raw food as I can get him to eat..He really likes chicken broth so I give him all he wants..I know for several days, he didn't even drink water just the broth, but lots of it. I did sneak some water in it at times, too..He has so many issues going on, it is hard to deal with..His thyroid test was normal this time, too..so 1/4 tapazole is working for him..I just hate that he is on so much pred right now...10mg daily, but I am going to cut it back to 7.5 then guess we will work our way down if we can..Please let me know what you think.. Thanks for the info, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Re: Inky update

2006-08-28 Thread Kerry Roach
Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts for Inky..I guess we are holding our own for now..He had 150ml sub-q fluids on Fri..and was to have more on Sunday, but since he is eating and drinking now and we go to the vet on Monday, I thought we would wait for her to check him out..It really stressed him out on Fri. to get them..I thought I was losing him as he quit eating and drinking again..I tried it all, too..even Friskies cat food..so then I grilled him a chicken breast, upped his pred and gave him a dose of transdermal appetite stimulant oxazepam...it seemed to work as he is now on his 3rd chicken breast and drank a large box of chicken broth along with some water now..eats a little bit of k/d. I am having a hard time getting the meds in him though..I now put his pill in a french fry and he takes it from me.. So I guess we will just go one day at a time...as long as I can keep him eating, I think he will be ok..and keep him from vomiting..Only once since
last Wed..so that is a good thing.. Anyway, sorry to go on and on, but I think you all know how it is.. Bandy has now gone the longest in over 14 months without a fever..If he has had one, you couldn't tell it..eating good and playing with his toys..He only gets meds once a day now..and that is a first, too..his hair is growing back and instead of solid black, it is salt and pepper...he really looks good for a change.. Thanks for all the CRF info, too..I have alot to look into..I forgot to add that I am not sure that is what is Inky's main problem..as I was looking at his lab work and comparing it to his past lab back from March..It may be pancreas. His phosphorus level was normal..so we aren't using binders as of yet..he will get more lab work I'm sure in a couple of wks..His vet mentioned liver failure, too, but some of those were normal, too..So I don't know..I am just trying to combat several things here with the right type of
diet for him..to lessen the load on his kidneys, liver and pancreas. Not an easy thing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Hope your fur babies are doing well!! Kerry, Bandy, and Inky

2006-08-24 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi guys, Thanks again for the help..I got Inky home around 6pm, and the first thing I did was get him some food. I had all his stuff set up in the living room so my dog wouldn't bother him or his food..I put some k/d in a bowl and he went for it..I guess he has been eating some thru out the night only a little at a time..I fixed him some chicken broth and extra lean raw turkey ( like he has been eating for several months) around 10:30 and he drank the juice, but since has eaten some of the turkey..Guess we are going to do this one day at a time..and slowly not to upset his stomach too much.. I think he has probably eaten around lil more than 1/2 can of k/d. I am so happy for this as I didn't want to stress him by force feeding...I think he is so glad to be home that it made all the difference in the world..He can curl up without that IV in his way. I found him once on the back of the couch then he even came and jumped in my lap
once...That was a good sign..I just hope he can keep the food down when I pill him on Thurs..that scares me, but has to be done.. I looked at his blood work again, and I think he has something going on with his pancrease cause all the liver tests were not bad..just the amylase and from what I have read, it seems to be the tests that goes along with that...His vet said he needs to stay on the k/d cause of the kidney problem so we can try to keep those values down...So I guess since he needs lower protein for both the kidneys and liver it will be ok for him..I just hope it doesn't flare up his IBD again. Please keep him in your prayers, Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Inky update

2006-08-21 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi, I know Inky isn't Felv+, but I need some help here...I went out of town last week so I had to board Bandy and Inky since they are both on meds...Anyway, Inky got sick while I was gone. They called me and said he was quite dehydrated so they wanted to start an IV after they had already done blood work which showed him to be in renal and liver failure...As you know, he just turned 20 about 2 wks. ago..so this wasn't good news at all...He has been on IV fluids since Fri..and today his bun and creatinine were down, but his amylase was 3200+ and high normal is 1100..so she has put him back on pred. He is eating k/d which he has been on the dry for several yrs, but since he has hyperT and IBD, I have been feeding him raw turkey which has helped the IBD. So now I don't know what to do...She said he really needed to be on a kidney diet, but with the liver values so high..I don't know what to think or to do...Any thoughts or experiences with high amylase,
please let us know..It could be something going on with his pancrease, too..He is going to come home on Tues..so that is the good thing as he looks alert and is eating the canned k/d. No vomiting or runny stool either.. Please keep him in your prayers.. Thanks so much, Kerry, Bandy and InkyP.S. Bandy is still doing better than he has in months..

Hi, Bandy had to stay on doxy for awhile until they ruled out hemobart. He was also on Lysine and interferon, baytril and pred at the same time...I just made sure that I gave him food before and after the doxy..something about it irritating them..Usually, I would give him his interferon right after I gave him the doxy so I was sure it went down..I think Nina told me to put it in some nutrical or a/d or something like that to make sure it went down and wouldn't irritate his stomach or esophagus. I know he stayed on the doxy for over a month...I think when they have hemobart, they stay on it for along time..Bandy seems to do well on all the supplements...I just add them to every meal..and I feed him wet food at least 4 times a day and all the dry he can eat. Hi all, Just wanted you all to know that my lil Bandy is holding his own for now..I did have to start him on the oral fulvicin..and I really didn't want to, but the ringworm has just made his whole head bald..He has been on it about a week now and it seems to be working along with the topicals, too..He went 15 days without a temp, but I had to give him some dex Fri. Sat. he was chasing me around the room..He wants to rub on me and I can't let him so we play chase instead...He is very alert and active. (eating good) He was scheduled for the immuno-regulin on July 24, but since he is doing ok for now I didn't want to stress him out with another vet visit yet..so he hasn't been to the vet since July 13 which is good for him as it seems that we were going weekly for awhile. If all is well for another week or so then I will probably take him to start the IR. I don't know what to do about it yet..It might help him get rid of
the RW faster, too..Michelle, if you see this, let me know what you think on that?? Thank you all once again for your support and knowledge... My computer is on the blink so that is why I haven't been on here much, but it is going to the shop this week so I will be in touch as soon as I get it fixed.. Take care, Kerry and Bandy

My vet put Inky on 10mg of pred for 3 to 4 wks at the beginning of his treatment last year..then we went down to 5 for another several weeks...He isn't even on pred now as I finally weaned him off it...If he seems to be having trouble going to the bathroom as his seems to be more straining than diarrhea, I give him 2.5mg of pred for a couple of days...then he gets better...or every other day. When my kitty had lymphoma, her worst symptom was vomiting more so than the other...her obstruction was causing it...then after chemo the vomiting stopped with only 1 treatment and after 2 she started gaining weight again...she got adriamycin once monthly IV and was on 20mg of pred the rest of her life with no ill side effects.. Re: Patches limping suddenly

2006-07-17 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, I have been dealing with Bandy's limping for almost 2 months now...At first, I am sure he hurt himself by jumping down from his cat tower. Since he doesn't have much depth perception cause of his eye disorder...Now he waits for me to get him down..But the last 2 or 3 episodes of the limping seem to be un-related to jumping...I have explored all the immune arthritis problems with my vet like you had mentioned..There is really no way to know as the blood work for kitties is usually not conclusive for the arthritis...only way is to go to specialist for an MRI. His limping goes from one side to the other..2 wks ago it was on the right and last week it was on the left...and seems to affect both front and rear...I know it is really odd. He has now had 6 adequan injections which you can only do one weekly for 6 wks in a row...We have skipped a week or 2 though...If it continues, I would suggest the adequan injection...It seems to work for
Bandy..His temp has been up, too...But she said that is probably due to more inflammation associated with his leg..It is swollen at times, too. (soft tissue swelling)...But after a few days that goes away... She did suggest metacam, too. So maybe that will help your lil Patches.. I also give Bandy 1/2 torbutrol for the pain. I have him on chondro-flex daily..it has MSM in it and some other things for swelling/arthritis. Keep us posted... you 2 are in our thoughts and prayers. Also, hope Lucy is doing better.. Re: Patches limping suddenly

2006-07-17 Thread Kerry Roach
Michelle, Glad to hear Patches is somewhat better...so maybe he just jumped and hurt it.. Bandy is scheduled for IR next Monday morning..Our local vet is out of town all week so I didn't want to do it while she was gone. His limping (knock on wood, too) is better right now...so I hope we can keep that in check as he is climbing. I think he might have learned from that mistake when he jumped so he does go down to the lower level now...I have some dex here at home if he gets a temp again which he usually does so I am going to try to get it before it gets past 103. This ringworm isn't gettting any better though..as soon as I get some spots cleared and hair growing again another pops up...So that battle goes on and on... Thoughts and prayers to you, Lucy and Patches Kerry and Bandy

Re: Please say a prayer for Lucy

2006-07-15 Thread Kerry Roach
Hi Michelle, I hope Lucy is feeling better today..I sure don't know what to do cause what works for Inky doesn't seem to work for Lucy. Have you tried adding bene-bac? I gave Inky some when he had loose stool and Bandy, too.. The bran isn't working either I take it... I know my lymphoma kitty was on 20mg of pred for 9 months or so..actually the rest of her life..I had another kitty on that much pred for 3 yrs...she had a tumor on the back side of her tongue and the pred would keep the inflammation down so she could eat...She had all the side effects that people get on high dose steroids, but that was the only way to keep her comfortable and she was until the last few days.. Have you checked her for hyperT? I know some of Inky's troubles was that along with the IBD. Inky is so skinny, but eats ok and only has 1 stool per day..I gave him astragalus, too. I think that might have been for the
hyperT though..I am trying to rack my brain as what you could try... Anyway, you 2 are in our thoughts and prayers. Kerry and Bandy

2006-07-07 Thread Kerry Roach
Michelle, Sorry you had so much trouble with your other groups...I go to other groups, but this is the only one that I post on as I really can't keep up with all of it..Like you said, it is true that we are all here to help each other. We have all experienced different things with our kitties, and what works for one might not the other...The info always helps as it could be used down the road for some other kitty in distress.. I appreciate everyone on here for all the input they have given me..Sure makes it alot easier to handle.. What about I/D for the IBD? I give Inky some of that when I am out of turkey which isn't often, but it does happen. I have been mixing chicken broth with his turkey and he really likes it..I figure it might be ok since his stools are good lately. Kerry and Bandy

Re: Bandy's latest

2006-07-07 Thread Kerry Roach
He was up last night when I went in there...I guess he had been eating as one side of his food tray was empty..I always give him 2 or 3 choices as I need him to eat..and always one without any supps in it..That may be crazy, but I want him to eat most of all. He looks awful cause of the ringworm, but wasn't limping much that I could tell. The swelling is gone from his leg today so I don't know what that was...the soft tissue swelling is still there some, but he didn't seem to be in any pain now.. Anyway, I will let you know how it goes..Once again, thanks to all of your for always being here.. Kerry and Bandy

2006-07-07 Thread Kerry Roach
Nina, I hope you can get the needed help for Ceasar and that it is something treatable.. Do you think he was just in some fight or some type of accident? I know how it is with the ferals as I, too, feed a bunch. I think people know that and drop them off close by so they will get fed... Our prayers are with you and Ceasar. Kerry and Bandy
