[Finale] Font issues in Mac OS X 10.15

2019-09-26 Thread Eric Dannewitz
Yes, I’m running the beta. Finale works, but I’ve noticed my Articulations font
(Bill Duncan) do not display nor print anymore.

In Font Book it displays the font properly.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon…...

Yes, I would agree too. TGTools and other plugins make Finale perfectly fine
for doing music.

And it doesn’t require some stupid dongle to run on multiple computer.

1200 dpi and can be bought for $120 or so. Probably would save on electricity

 Hello all,

I use a MacBook, running Sierra (not High Sierra). Suddenly, with the last
system upgrade from Apple (to 10.12.6), the printer is no longer found.

Is anyone on the list using a setup similar to mine, who experienced the
same problem and has a solution?

Or, perhaps, could someone make recommendations for a reliable printer
that can print up to 12x18?

 Hoping for help!

If you had a mac you wouldn’t have an issue.

You could print them to postscript and use something like ps2pdf.com
 to convert them.

Re: [Finale] Accessing 64-bit on Macs

2017-09-01 Thread Eric Dannewitz
How does one do that? Mac programs don’t let you tell it how much memory to
use. Unless you are talking about cache size for the aria player.

A LOT of slow down can be prevented by either moving everything to solid state
disks (SSDs) or put your samples on a separate disk than your system.

So, if it is a 4/4 bar, I’d make it two 2/4 bars (or a 3/4 and a 1/4), and hide
the time signatures and put the repeat in where you need it.

I don’t like the JazzFont. I remember buying before MakeMusic bought it and
included it with Finale. It was cool at the time, but that was the 90s.

I really have stuck with the Articulations font that the late great Bill Duncan
put together for Finale. It has all the articulations one needs, and you get to
use Maestro font. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Re: [Finale] Monday sale

2016-11-25 Thread Eric Dannewitz
10.9 can run 64 bit apps. You can check to see what your system is running by
opening terminal and doing “uname -a”

RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64 means 64 bit is running
RELEASE_I386 i386 is 32 bit.

I’m sorta stuck on 10.9 due to a graphics card issue……i’d have to spend some $$
to get a new graphics card.

Re: [Finale] Install Finale 2010 on Mac OS Siera 10.12

2016-11-10 Thread Eric Dannewitz
It might run, or it might not run. There are a lot of “under the hood” changes
in every update of MacOS, and since 2010 Finale came out around when 10.6 or
10.7 was around, then I wouldn’t really be sure that it’s going to function
correctly.

The installer probably won’t run, so you are probably going to have to use
migration assistant to get it on.

The other problem is that Macs are sort build for a certain version of the OS
and beyond, and you can’t really (without a lot of hacking) get a newer system
to run the older OS. Display drivers, hardware drivers, etc, are not available
for them.

So……..

I think probably up to 10.8 would run Finale 2010. Maybe 10.9.

Your best bet would be to make a VM with 10.7 on it and use that.

But the bigger question is WHY stick with 2010 Finale? You have a new iMac. You
just spent $2K on something and don’t want to move your software into the new
age?

No clue. I'd first see if the Mac mini will run 10.12 first as there was a big
hardware cutoff for this version of the operating system.

The second thing would be to ask why you need to run 10.12. What feature is
compelling you to upgrade? I can't see any that stand out and I have two macs
that are not "officially" supported by 10.12 so.

Maybe when the new Apple file system comes on line I will move to 10.12, but I
don't see that happening until next summer at the earliest.

Re: [Finale] Scanning, what to do now?

2016-09-26 Thread Eric Dannewitz
Well, to be fair, makemusic is owned by a company who also owns Alfred music,
which is like one of the biggest music publishers in the world.so.

Plus, there are plenty of third party programs that do a better job of
scanning.

Well, look, if you don’t repair your disk, your “new” preferences are probably
going to get corrupt again. So whether or not you like the proposed solution,
it is the solution other than fixing your disk which is probably the real
problem.

General rule of computer use, have a backup. Time machine. Crash plan. A
bootable clone. Something. Or all the above.

Running your computer with a filesystem that needs repairs is courting
disaster……

I think you made a wise choice, Robert. I bought the 128GB i5 model and
immediately bought a 128GB microSD card. I am using mine as a traveling
laptop, so I have Office on it, WordPerfect, Sibelius, Finale and a
 bunch of other stuff.

I keep my data files on the microSD card and keep the programs in the
 main storage.

And I agree that the Pro model is the better one to get for musicians
because reading PDFs of music is much easier with the larger screen.

I don't know what Microsoft has done that Apple can't seem to do, but
the battery life on the Surface is much much better than on my iPad.

My one regret with the Surface is that the developers of ForScore, the
music reading app that I use on my iPad have clearly stated that they
will not be developing a Windows version. Ever. So I'm stuck using
MusicReader on the Surface -- it's fine for the display of the music,
turning pages, etc., but their library management isn't nearly as good
 as ForScore, in my opinion.

Enjoy your SurfacePro when it arrives, Robert! And to get the most out
of StaffPad, practice, practice, practice! It gets easier to get the
notation entered with time. And you'll develop a workflow that works
best for you, as we've all done with Finale and Sibelius.

MP4, or AAC. For the same size, the file is going to sound better than a MP3.
And everything made since like 2009 or is running a more modern OS (Windows
Vista+ and Mac OS X 10.6+) should be able to play it just fine.

To be fair to Apple, they do publish extensive developer guidelines concerning
how to craft a program. This is mainly for the AppStore, but if a developer
does this then generally their program works just fine. I have several programs
that haven't been updated that work just fine in 10.10.

Comparing software to a TV doesn't work. Or your car. Its ridiculous.

Adobe's products are FAR from perfect and most of them have a list of legacy
bugs that would make Finale's look teeny weenie. And Adobe also does what
people are accusing MakeMusic of.moving on and fixing issues (or working

Microsoft, Google, etc).

time and some not at all, to compound this, your cable service also presented
programming issues and challenges. Or your car. Features as prominent as a
gauge. Or even a major program like Mathematica, which is at least equally
sophisticated in context to Finale. Or an Adobe product. Think about what it
would mean to the market and to advances and innovations. We are stuck with a
great application that is unfortunately far from perfect and for some reason
the company does not have high enough standards to perfect their product the
way the other products I've mentioned perfect them. Comments?

So in rough numbers, there were 120 employees.
They offered transfers to about 60.
About 30 or 1/4 of the company is going to stay on board.

Considering this encompasses Smartmusic and Garritan, and Smartmusic is

includes the ability to sell products online, such as your
arrangements. If you already have a basic site on Weebly, I would try
to find somebody willing to extend that.

For a person conversant in web development, the Weebly learning curve is
not very steep. If you can live with one of the templates that Weebly
provides, it is quick and easy. I inherited a Weebly site recently and
was able to be productive fairly quickly. The really time consuming
things are customizing the look and feel of the site if you want to do
more than the templates provide. That is not easy, but I suspect that
would not be an issue in your case.

I'm not in a situation to take on any more work in that area, but I just
offer these thoughts in case there is a web-savvy person out that that
was scared off by mention of Weebly. My point is simply that Weebly is
easy to use and there is no reason to avoid that solution.

 - Church hymn solo arrangements for trombone and piano (some of you got

one of these several weeks ago, my church loves them)

 - Church hymn arrangements for brass, especially for congregational

singing (brass quartets, not so much quintets, and a bunch of stuff for

 - Organ Preludes (very popular)

 - Choral arrangements and compositions

 - Compositions for orchestra (these are starting to take off around the

 - arrangements for elementary school band (varying instrumentation, can

 be altered to order)

*Finale skills come into play particularly for these: I have dozens of hymn
descants for trumpet, trb and flute, in separate files and with
inconsistent formatting. I have a format (hymn tune name, title, etc.,) I
would like to use for all of them but haven't had time to reformat them
all. I also want the melody added on a separate staff whenever it is not

Command-period has no effect for me, other than to display/hide the menu

Finale 2012 provides Window-Zoom Window that gets me out of the jam. I was
able to get out of the jam in Fin08 using a shareware app called SizeUp.

I really wouldn't know without actually playing with it, but you might
consider cloning the system disk off to another hard drive and then
cloning it back. File fragmentation might be an issue, even though the

Re: [Finale] Spreadbury diary

2014-02-20 Thread Eric Dannewitz
They also sell cars to anybody.and look at the drivers out there. They also
sell violins to anybody.

A tool is a tool. If a publishing house lets complete crap out, you should tell
them that by returning that crap. If a composer comes in with a piece, and
its totally NOT readable, then you should tell them that. Point out what needs
to be fixed. For YEARS I sucked at writing out rhythm section parts,
particularly DRUM charts. I ASKED everyone who played my stuff what I can do
better, and they tell me what is good or bad about the music. And I fix it. My
parts now are damn good if I do say so, but it's because I've worked at it.
I've honed the tool (Finale) to produce legible music.

Again, while Daniel has a nice blog post about these intellectual pursuits,
like positioning rests, I think people are better served by just seeing how it
should look in a score example and then doing it that way. I NEVER rely on
Finale or Sibelius to do the right thing. Ever. If I don't know how to notate
something, I go look for how to do it. If it is two lines on the same staff,
and how to do the rests, I go look for examples of it. And then decide what
looks readable/legible to me and do it that way.

I can't tell you how many times I go to a rehearsal, and some old band teacher
brings in a chart they did on Finale or Sibelius that is just a massacre. 3
pages longer than it needed to be. Spacing all weird. DS in the wrong place.
Dynamics on some parts but not others. Rehearsal marks wrong. Measure numbers
off. I just want to scream.

Oh, last time I checked, major publishers didn't just publish scores. Even if
you had a finale or sibelius file, you had to send them the score (printed) and
then they would redo it in house in their style. This might have changed, but
it used to be the practice of how one big name publisher used to do it (even
though they used Finale as well).

And here is Daniel Spreadbury's latest diary entry:

 http://blog.steinberg.net/2014/02/development-diary-part-the-fifth/

I really appreciate the things he is discussing. I play in a symphony
orchestra that does 5 subscription concerts a year. In 2 of the last 4
concerts we were given music that was so horribly notated that it could
not be played well in the first reading by musicians of any caliber,
IMHO. I was so angered by this inept notation that I rewrote many of
the more tedious parts for the musicians. At the second reading, the
 music worked fine.

As the saying goes, They will sell a Finale license to anybody. These
were not bad compositions. And I am certain the composers were
excellent musicians. But their notation was terrible, yet two different
publishing houses let these pieces go out the door. It is embarrassing
to musicians to get tripped up by incompetent copyists. That's a
 hangin' offense in my book.

I don't hold out much hope that publishers will recognize the error of
their ways and insist that competent copyists be engaged. Indeed, the
reality is probably the opposite -- that publishers are likely to be
willing to accept crappier and crappier scores. So to the extent that
notation programs will do a better job of encouraging best practices in
the future, I am all for that.

I must say that the second half of Spreadbury's article dealing with how
to jam two utterly incompatible musical lines onto one staff proves the
point. None of his examples ever have any business being on a shared
staff if played by two different musicians. IMHO, the only time it is
acceptable to double- or triple-up parts is when: a) they all have
parallel motion, b) there are never any overlapping notes (other than a
clearly marked (A2) section, and c) there is never any ambiguity
whatsoever about which accidentals belong to which notes. (One of the
worst cases is where a low G is flatted in part 3, and an octave-higher
G appears later in the measure for part 1 and the flat is not shown --
as if player 1 is supposed to be reading all three parts.) This all
comes down to the issue, do you want musicians to play the music
correctly or don't you? If you want the music played correctly, then
 notate it correctly.

Sorry about the rant, but this stuff really sets me off sometimes.

The issue is extremely - agonizingly - unacceptably - sluggish behavior when
doing ANYTHING. Changing tools, scrolling pages, anything. I'm on an 8-core
2.26 GHz Mac Pro with 18GB of RAM, and it's always been plenty fast on even
the largest scores up till now (in Finale 2012).

Disclaimer(s): this project involved expanding a score originally done years
ago in a much earlier version of Finale (not even sure which one at the
moment) from a 6-piece combo to a 17-piece big band with vocal. So I know I'm
possibly asking for trouble by not copying and pasting the previous
information (or re-entering it from scratch) into a new native 2014 document.
I know there can be lots of left-over garbage that can slow things down.

That being said, in every version up till this one, when I've had to do
exactly what I described above, I've still been able to work efficiently with
only the most minimal occasional slowdown or glitch, even in an orchestral
score that started life years earlier in another version. So I'm wondering if
some combination of old file format, custom fonts (Bill Duncan chord symbol),
older OS and machine, and who knows what else might be causing this.

I called tech support and his best guess was that it was file specific, and
I'm certainly hoping that's the case. I'll just have to finish this and then
start the next large score from scratch in 2014 and see if the same thing
develops as the score grows. Meanwhile, has anyone found that OS X10.7.5
(Lion) is just not up to the task of handling Finale 2014, as opposed to
 Mountain Lion or Mavericks?

Thanks for any insight. I'm not ready to upgrade to Mavericks on the Mac Pro
yet, although Mountain Lion would be easy enough if that would help.

 Doug

P.S. I'm not (knowingly) experiencing any loss of data or crashes or anything
of the sort - just a sluggishness that will have me running back to 2012 to
do any real work from now on if this can't be solved.

 Remove Lower Notes Ctrl+B
 Remove Ties Ctrl+T
 Favor Flats Ctrl+A
 Favor Sharps Ctrl+S

I use Hyperscore to input my music. I also use Tie across bar-lines and
 frequently get many unwanted ties.
So I made the script Remove Ties and assigned it to Ctrl+T. This of course
uses the wonderful JW plugin JW untie notes by Jari Williamssohn.

Here is the script for Removing Ties:
menu item Plugins/JW Plugins/JW Untie Notes

Also in Hyperscore, I get a lot of unwanted doubled notes due to my legato
 playing style.
So I created two scripts, one for removing the higher note, and one for
 removing the lower note:

 Removing Higher Notes:
 menu item TGTools/Modify/Special Modifications...
choose menu item Search And Modify
check menu item All single notes:
Type 2 in Nth note in chord (from top):
check menu item Keep only (erase others):
 Press Go

 Removing Lower Notes:
 menu item TGTools/Modify/Special Modifications...
choose menu item Search And Modify
check menu item All single notes
Type 1 in Nth note in chord (from top)
check menu item Keep only (erase others)
 Press Go

Many passages will use sharps and flats in the same score. It is always a pain
to go and change these, so here is a script that changes them in a keystroke:

 This one Favors Flats:
 select window Finale 2012/Enharmonic Spelling
 apply Favor Flats
 menu item Utilities/Respell Notes

 This one Favors Sharps:
 select window Finale 2012/Enharmonic Spelling
 apply Favor Sharps
 menu item Utilities/Respell Notes

It is important to choose a keystroke that works for you and you'll be good
 to go!

Avids shutting down? I don't think so.

I would point out that Finale 2014 essentially provides no real
advancement in the start of the art. It is clearly a better
implementation of the same old features than what we had with 2011 and
2012. But there is nothing at all innovative in this package. That's
not really a criticism. Other than some typical bugs that I'm sure will
be worked out in due course, I really like Finale 2014 and don't regret
the upgrade at all. It feels better to use. Lots of little things
seem to work better,

It's easy to throw around there is no innovation, but what do you really
mean by that? Did they not include that feature that you wanted but you've
never spelled out? There are plenty of things that move notation forward in
finale 2014.

But without real innovation: a) you cannot ask much for the upgrade
price, and b) not many users will rush forward with their wallets open.
And that makes for a business case that simply doesn't work. You have
to either strip it down to the thinnest possible skeleton crew or else
you have to make a commitment to truly innovate. There is no middle
ground. The cash cow strategy would be attractive financially, but
probably only works for another year or two as Steinberg and others
should be bringing fresher products to the market.

Again, what do you want? What would be real innovation? Making it work
better on Mac os x? Providing more sounds? Define a fileformat for the
future? What?

I think both finale and Sibelius are pretty much the top of what you can do
with notation. I don't really know what people expect other than little
refinements to the programs in each version.

The fact that MakeMusic did create several new openings gives me hope
that they are going to try to get back into an innovation mode, which is
the only way the product will be able to exist 5 years from now.

So your expert analysis is that these new openings are really the way
towards innovation? Hardly. Innovation starts at the top and I don't see
anything that makes me believe the top of the organization is poised to
magically start innovating. But I don't think they did what avid did,
which was to basically shit can the whole development team.

Also, I don't see the Steinberg guys doing anything amazing either.and
I have been following their blog. If they somehow merge cubase with
something like Sibelius then that would be awesome, butat this point
they don't have anything nor any real timeframe on anything.

money. Period. And they usually invest in companies that have a goal

Of the two (Sibelius and finale) I think finale is moving forward.
Avid is really all about protools and everything else is second
fiddle.

business person. To a gambler, doubling down may be a random, reckless
reaction. But it also may be a calculated move reflecting confidence in
 the face of favorable odds.

My guess is that the ownership got pretty frusterated losing over 2
years in an effort that may have greatly improved the product
foundation, but doesn't really open up new revenue streams. In that
context, I translate doubling down to mean OK, we put the money into
getting the product fixed. Now we have to charge forward adding new
capability that will fix our business, giving us a lot more revenue.

In this sense, doubling down means you have an expectation of either
 hitting big or going bust.

Vector editing would be interesting, especially if you could save those vectors

Audio editing.not sure if that is a biggie. Finale does have, I think, the
ability to include/record audio. But how many people actually use that?

What I'd like to see is way way better midi/notation integration. I'm still
amazed at the poor midi output Finale generates when I dump a score out of it

Everything about the process of notation can be made a full order of
 magnitude more intuitive and productive.

But you fail to list anything

Where are their future customers coming from? There are many potential
customers who have tried these notation products and found them
overwhelming. I know a lot of folks here wear the Finale learning curve
like a badge of honor. But the flip side of that coin is that it
prevents sales to much larger numbers of customers. You have to make the
product less arcane by a factor of 10 to reach these customers. And it
can be done. It just takes more vision than has been demonstrated.

Honestly, there is hardly any difference in the learning curve of Finale
compared to Sibelius. Finale 2014 is WAY less arcane than say Finale 2000.
They have made HUGE leaps in making the program easier. Some of us might even
call it dumbing down the program.

Future customers? Honestly, you expect a notation software to take off like
wild fire? Future customers are those who are interested in writing out pieces
to be performed by people. There is a very very tiny market for that compared
to say something like Ableton Live where you are looping stuff together and
could care less what it looks like notated (and the average Ableton user
probably can't read music to being with).

The future customers are going to be those concerned with the written/printed
notation, and those persons are going to want and easy and flexible tool to
use. Finale is that tool. Sibelius is easy, but you can't make it do stuff like
you can in Finale.

Moreover, a good part of the potential market is sophisticated musicians
(and educators) who are very tuned into the broader world of music
technology. If MakeMusic wants to reach the next generation of
musicians -- the real opinion leaders -- Finale will have to be much
more interoperable and seamless with the DAW world, and much more
inclusive of the best plug-in technologies that are ubiquitous in the
 DAW world.

I don't really know how MakeMusic can make headway here. It does something, and
does it well. It notates. While I'd LOVE to see it include DAW features, I
don't think it will. That would be pretty much like writing a whole new program.

If you look at what Avid did when it first got Sibelius, the next version of
ProTools had some rudimentary talking between the two programs. I don't think
Avid has done anything since with that (I don't know as I don't use ProTools
anymore currently). I think it was a great idea, but ProTools really doesn't
have very good Midi editing abilities (at least last time I used it) compared
to say Digital Performer.

Perhaps if big DAWs adopted MusicXML format..but that has been around for a
long time, and I don't think ANY of the DAWs I use (Digital Performer or Logic
X Pro) have anything MusicXML in them.

Makemusic will not have a financially viable product in 2 years if they
do not embrace those concepts. I realize that functionally, Finale will
continue to suit most folks here just fine, but there will simply not be
enough revenue to fund the product's continuation. And I assure you
that venture people are very tuned in to the ROI. They don't look upon
this as a civic cause or a charity.

So the concepts are what again? Make it less arcane to get more customers,
make it more intuitive and productive, and make it interoperable and seamless
with the DAW world.

Again, they are DOING that. What about just having MakeMusic make the best tool
for notation that is out there? I think they are still doing that, and I will
happily buy an upgrade when TGTools works with it.

Venture people invest in something that has potential. I worked at a startup
that was trying to be bought by several venture capital companies, and they are
very complete usually in looking at the books, talking to the staff about what
is going on.

Regarding Avid, the situation is much more severe than you described.
Sibelius is not being developed in any significant way. It is as close
to an end-of-line product as one gets without formally announcing
that. There may be small tactical releases in the future, and perhaps
some merging of function with ProTools, but no major new advancement of
the notation art. The developers are all with Steinberg now. It
appears to me the venture guys running MakeMusic have decided NOT to go
the direction that Avid went. They are well aware of Steinberg's
efforts and fully understand they have something like an 18 month window
to establish their strongest position when the Steinberg product comes

And I believe Lord Of The Rings was scored using Digital Performer...

I sorta wish MOTU would have bought MakeMusic.

Audio editing.not sure if that is a biggie. Finale does have, I think,

I'm not sure. I certainly do, and have for years. I have scores that include
electronic sections that need to show as waveforms, fx tracks, include synth
instrument versions, etc. It would be a great boon for scoring, say, to
include and EDIT sound effects and music right in-score -- think of Vegas,
with its music generator. The whole score could be built in place instead of
swapping out to an audio application, bringing it back, stretching or
 shrinking, transposing, etc.

What I'd like to see is way way better midi/notation integration. I'm still
amazed at the poor midi output Finale generates when I dump a score out of it
and load it into Digital Performer or Logic.

INTEGRATION with them, exactly, so that edits in Logic or Sonar would appear
in the Finale score, in the audio file, and multi-vice-versa.

Re: [Finale] Layoffs and reorganization announced at MakeMusic

2013-11-20 Thread Eric Dannewitz
I use Digital Performer, and I don't see MusicXML. They do have Final Cut Pro
XML, OMF, AAF, and AudioDesk (which I believe is a scaled down version of DP
they ship with their hardware interfaces).

Generally, the midi from Finale is OK, but to really be able to switch back and
forth between it and something else, MIDI isn't really going to do it..

 track too many times before.

If they are saying now 18 months, then if it is one of the extremely few
planned software projects lucky enough to actually see the light of day,
36-48 months is a more likely release time frame. And while it will do some
one thing the developers are determined to revolutionize far better than
Fin or Sib, we'll be lucky if the overall feature set is 75% of what Fin
and Sib have. And even that one revolutionized thing will probably only
 target a specific user subset.

There is something enticing about a clean slate: a fresh architecture on
contemporary toolsets. But the reality is, by the time you bring a large
software project to market, your toolset that was so new at the beginning
has been superceded and your wonderful flexibile program architecture has
been utterly compromised by real-world demands.

When it comes to software, I have far greater faith in incremental change.
The incremental changes in both Fin and Sib are actually pretty
revolutionary when you consider them over the last 10-15 years. I am sorry
to see Sib sidelined because it could slow the pace of change in Fin.
Meanwhile, I hold out little hope for a software product whose only output
so far is a couple of blog posts. I hope I'm wrong.

BTW: Personally, I would see the many remaining notation deficiencies
addressed before turning Finale into a DAW program. Maybe the various DAW
companies (like MOTU) could be persuaded to support MusicXML? (Do they
already? The only reason I say this is someone said they were using MIDI
 files.)

True, but at least he's not throwing in the towel and abandoning it.
I'll happily wait until he updates it and maybe there will be a few
point releases to finale 2014 in the interm.
