Is there a way to force fink to get a fresh copy of the source to rebuild the .deb or something similar? Iain (as mentioned in my other message) fink rebuild gtk+2 is what you want. What has gone on is that there have been modifications to the Fink package description and build options that didn't change the revision of the package (the last number: -1002). Because of that, if you try to use fink updae gtk+2 or fink update-all, Fink sees the package as current, and that there is a current binary archive of the package to install from. fink rebuild gtk+2 will make the fink tool ignore the presence of a binary archive and build the package again. I hope to reduce the number of variables by trying Fink's xorg, and thus learn something). What are the implications of replacing X11 with Fink's xorg packages? Will I have to rebuild a large number of packages? Nope. Only tetex* have been known to cause problems (at least to me). Will fink know enough to automatically rebuild the packages, or are there a list that I should rebuild, or do I just rebuild the ones that no longer work? (as above) Is there an easy way to switch back to Apple's X11 later, if I so desire? Well, it's not that hard: sudo dpkg -r --force-depends xorg xorg-shlibs then install X11User.pkg and X11SDK.pkg, but: Going in this direction means you'll have to rebuild most everything x11-related that you built with xorg. Re: [Fink-users] OT: Bypassing Aqua GUI on startup in favour of KDE (kdm)
On 8/10/06, Markus Kamp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey folks, I know this is not directly related to fink directly, but this list is the one where I expect to meet the guru who can help me with the problem I have: I'm using Mac OS 10.4.7 on an ibook G4. What I'm trying to do is to bypass the Aqua GUI at startup and start a kdm session to log on and start up kde. Once it's finished it should behave like some sort of dual-boot thing to let me choose if I want an Aqua- or a KDE-session. The motivation is to save RAM and cpu-time used by Aqua when working exclusively with KDE. The method to enter console as username with no password in the loginwindow and being dropped to console doesn't work for me and as it is not exactly what I wanted I didn't further investigate that point. What I did so far is: - sudo nvram boot-args=-v for booting verbosely - edited the file /etc/ttys to drop me to the console for login (works) - made some versions of that file (ttys, ttys.aqua, ttys.console) to easily revert to the original behaviour (works) - made one file /etc/ttys.kdm to start kdm instead of loginwindow for login (doesn't work) When I copy ttys.kdm to ttys and reboot, kdm starts and shows the following message: kdm[65]: x server died during startup kdm[65]: x server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled These are repeated infinitely (with rising pids :-) until I reboot using the power button. After that I start in single user mode, # cp ttys.aqua ttys , and voila, Aqua is back. BTW: If I try to start kdm from a terminal window as root (via su) everything works as planned and I can initiate a KDE session for user 1 on top of an Aqua session of user 2 XDarwin documentation says you can run X directly from the console: On Mac OS X, you can run XFree86 from the Darwin text console or in parallel with Aqua. ( http://xonx.sourceforge.net/start.html ) Ideas anyone ? I haven't been able to get console to work since 10.2, so I suspect the docs are out of date on that score. One thing to keep in mind is that you -lose- acceleration in XDarwin by not running it under Aqua. You might get a better performance boost by just closing all of your Aqua apps including the Finder: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060722234910582 (there are safe options there (and some that aren't)) -- Alexander K. You don't have an user named unknown on your machine, do you? The fink selfupdate-rsync program chooses the username to 'su' to by looking at the owner of some file or directory in /sw/fink/, I think /sw/fink/10.4 in your case. Something must be wrong when fink tries to find its owner. What do you get from ls -la /sw/fink -- Martin Hi Martin, Below is the listing you asked for. When I saw the 1000:1000 on TIMESTAMP.tmp, I thought ah ha, that must be it. So I chowned it to root:admin. Fink selfupdate still failed exactly the same way with unknown in the rsync command. Looking back at TIMESTAMP.tmp now showed root:55002. There is an unknown user in the local netinfo database with the uid:gid of 99:99. Is there an easy way to capture the installed packages in the current fink tree and then use the info to batch reinstall the same packages in a fresh 10.4 tree? If I don't have to reinstall each package manually, might it be just easier to just start with a fresh sw installation? Re: [Fink-users] reverting package version
On 8/4/06, David Fang [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is there a way to revert a package version to a version that's not listed? For example, autoconf-2.59 is no longer available as it has been replaced by autoconf-2.60, and dumpinfo only shows 2.60. I can't find 2.59 in the stable tree either. (Unfortunately, the upgrade has caused some serious grief and breakage for a project of mine.) Hopefully, I'd only need to do this temporarily until I diagnose the exact problem before devising a workaround to allow use of the new version, so momentary incoherence in my fink installation is acceptable. You can download the older version via CVS, e.g. the ViewCVS interface: http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/fink/dists/10.4/stable/main/finkinfo/devel/autoconf.info?view=log --maybe rename the .info file to be autoconf-1.59-revision.info -- Alexander K. (There was a momentary mess in trying to remove the installed package, but blocked by the dependency.) Now a dumpinfo shows that the debs for autoconf-2.60-4 and 2.59-7 are both available, so I should be able to switch between them via install. I think the only problem will arise when autoconf.info is updated, but I can at least repeat the above steps. Thanks again. David Yeah. That's why I suggested either naming it with the version and revision and/or putting it in the local tree. -- Alexander K. Hansen Fink Documenter (still) - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. A day and a half later, my iBook had it all compiled and I was able to launch amarok by starting X11 first and then amarokapp (the amarok binary would not work for some cause I don't know). Now I got the problem that amarok can play mp3 files fine and I also can browse directories and play from there, but I was not able to scan my music collection, which I mounted in as /Volumes/music as an afp share. When I hit Rescan Collection, it sits there for 10 Seconds and then it is finished. However, scanning my collection should normally take an hour or so via WLAN. Has anyone an idea, what I may try? I prefer fink, but there are a few packages that darwin ports has a newer version that I need. Let the Fink maintainer(s) of the packages know which ones. It shouldn't be too much of a hassle to update them, then. When I try to compile that package it wants to build a whole list of dependencies that I already have installed through fink. What I'm trying to build is Gourmet http://grecipe- manager.sourceforge.net, which gives me errors with PyGTK not being newer than 2.3.9. Darwin Ports has py-gtk2 2.8.6, fink has pygtk2- py24 2.6.3-1001. I've tried installing PyGTK from the offical sources, but am having problems chasing down dependencies(including gtk, which wants an old jpg lib I can't seem to get to work...) Fink's looks to be new enough. Do you have pygtk2-py24-dev installed? I desperately want Gourmet to work and am hoping that the newer version of PyGTK at DP will solve my problems, but don't want to have a another whole section of pythons, gettext, etc... as I am getting really short on disk space. Unfortunately, that's what's going to happen. The two systems currently just do not support using each others' packages. If there is someone who will work with me to get gourmet running, I would really appreciate it. The gourmet mailing list never answers Mac questions. I'd love to get it running and to build a fink package. It looks like something that people would use (I would, for one). If you do in fact have pygtk2-py24-dev installed, then the next step would be to look in the config.log file in the gourmet build directory for what file was being looked for (assuming it failed during configuration rather than build). -- Alexander K. It looks like sodipodi development has basically stopped; the last version came out 2 years ago, so it's not likely to be fixed any time soon. Inkscape, a fork of sodipodi, is being actively developed and Fink's inkscape-0.44-1005 is known to work on MacIntel. Daniel: Thanks - I sort of had come to that conclusion, but since sodipodi is offered as a fink package on intel, people are bound to stumble over this issue. There are packages that are offered on intel that build but don't run--they were moved over if they built, as that operation could be automated. Runtime usage is a different matter. Inkscape is quite nice, but still has the bug I reported in http:// article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.general/21701 (checked this for the newest inkscape version 0.44-1005 installed July 16): when I go to some action in the Fretboard Designer menu, it complains that pyxml is missing even though I have it installed. The Test perl modules that come with OSX 10.4 don't have Builder::Tester, Are you saying I should remove the CPAN-installed Builder::Tester? I don't know what the long-term solution is; maybe Fink needs to update all the Test modules. That sounds likely - if the newest Test::Builder::Tester available through Fink cannot recognize the output of the current Test::Builder and Test::Simple from CPAN, that's probably a problem. :-) Just to confirm that I'm not insane, I just did: # cpan -i Test::Builder Test::Simple to ensure that I really was in fact using the latest versions. Test::Builder was reinstalled (I had moved it to .../5.8.6/Test~/) and Test::Simple said it did not need to be updated. Fink's Test::Builder::Tester install fails with previously posted error messages. So, out-of-date CPAN files is definitely not the problem on my end. But the short-term solution for you would be to put the Test modules back to the version in which they came with the system. It is not only Test/Builder.pm that has changed, but also Test/Simple.pm and Test/More.pm (and maybe others I don't know of). Easier said than done. I spent about 5 hours today downloading all 4+GB worth of XCode archives and going through every single package in every version of XCode, all the way back to 2002 Developer Tools, before it was even called XCode, and the /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/Test/ files are nowhere to be found, other than Tutorial.pod which is of no relevance here. Where do the stock Apple-installed versions of Harness, Builder, Simple and More come from in the first place? At this point I have no idea how to remedy this situation, and can't compile much of anything that I need to because of the dependencies on the broken T::B::T. D'oh. If someone running 10.4.7/PPC who does not have this T::B::T compile problem can just send me a tarball of .../5.8.6/Test/ I'd be eternally grateful. Is there a config file I need to tell it to use camino or will such options only work with a browser running X? I believe they want a browser that's a single executable file, rather than a bundle (like an OS X .app). There are ways around this, e.g. via AppleScript. A simple alternative option is that if Camino is set to be your default browser, then you should be able to set your browser to be the open command. A bit quick on the button there: Since open will try to use the default browser to open a URL, in this case Camino will be used. Actually, what I would like is for something to behave like Apple's X11 – I would only use terminal.app and really couldn't see much different from x apps and Mac apps. I don't really need a full desktop environment. I had all of this Xwindows stuff figured out a few years ago, but forgot most of it when Apple released theirs. Sure--my comment was intended to be general (for others reading it, too) i appreciate also your clarifying what is up with deselect. so maybe i didn't really fix anything, i don't know. but with aptitude once you build source it appears on the package list, the same. so as far as reconciling conflicts with what exists on the system it would still seem to be correct, no ? *** the problem i saw with fink or / and commander i am not sure is it archiveing some package which creates temporary conflicts, i am not sure how this can happen really, anyway you can wind up with unresolved or tangled conflicting dependency somewhere in the middle of a build that fails. thence disrupting any future install or rebuild until it is fixed. With current versions of fink this shouldn't happen. You should be able just to repeat whatever operation you were performing and it will untangle things. You may have to do this a few times--if it's really Actually in this case it almost halfway makes sense that fink commander should refuse to run, however there really ought to be a way to reset things. this is almost like a bug report then, IMHO. So for clarity: does Fink Commander crash when you run it? If so that's a completely separate issue from your Fink setup--all Fink Commander is is an interface to look at the package information and run commands. Normally, even if your FInk setup is screwed up Fink commander will function all right. * (actually i think i recall what failed now but besides the point!!!) referring to cvs - i just got instruction from the FAQ page that it was a good idea if fink appears to be confused to go back to cvs temporarily to update. that is, seems to imply these resets it some how. then you are supposed to go back to rsync once it appears to be running ok again. No. Those instructions said to do that if when you're trying to get updates and you don't see new packages--and this is to get a version of fink that isn't brokien. No current version of fink suffers from this. ok so fink commander at cvs suggested to build again on the FAQ if binaries don't work, that is not itself built through fink, because it is an Aqua App ?? or what ?? It's was released originally not as an official part of the Fink project. It could actually be built via fink. i guess i had been trying to build too many things at once or getting carried away or something. On 6/22/06, Alexander K. That's completely unconnected. The sourceforge server has been unreliable. Why are you using cvs instead of rsync, anyway? i am not sure i am willing to go through with it but i might try getting cvs build of fink commander - am sort of assuming i need fink cvs although maybe that is dumb ??? You don't. You just need to check it out with whatever cvs program version you're using. *** i could almost use deselect -- I think that the problem with fink commander is old not updated for three years, Yes. Do you know ObjectiveC? We'd love for somebody to be able to update it. it is not smart about dependencies: why it does not show you dependencies up front like deselect or like fink command line. You do get the output from the command line in the console window for Fink Commander. The major reason is that you have to run the 'fink' command anyway to resolve the dependencies: 1) Packages that aren't in a binary distribution aren't represented in dpkg's database so the dependency tracking you'd have from apt-get / dselect isn't available. 2) Build dependencies don't go into the dpkg database at all. the good about deselect is it at least gives you some interface - it is text based in the window like no real button clicking gui, but at least it has decently formatted you can do a lot in there inside the program -- like what they call a dialogue interface, in linix deselect is like fall back, they now have aptitude and its gui relatives. And they're available for Fink as well--currently in the unstable trees. however after using it yesterday i kind of like deselect. what i like about fink commander is better than aptitude/synaptic/etc in the presentation, but a serious flaw to me not showing dependency information. when i was working with it a lot i think i was going back and forth to terminal to look up dependencies. wasn't there some other tool or two there also .. all command line though, is a huge hassle, if i had been able to see easily in advance what conflict i would have thought again about what i was trying to install which was a secondary wish i didn't really need that much if it was going to break something more important. note i also use debian linix that is a similar package system to fink, but it is not all the same, i guess about 70%. i am not a programmer but i do some admin/config/maintainance stuff. more than i really want to (sort of a go-between users and programmers). i want to have time to work on my real stuff. -- Alexander K.
