I was a little quick there.

What the message is referring to is not whether gcc is 3.3, but
whether your particular build of gcc3.3 is correct.  If you have XCode
1.5 and the November 2004 gcc3.3 update, that suffices.

You generally will have a painful ordeal if you have -ssl stuff
already installed and try to swap in the corresponding non-ssl
packages.  I recommend just going for -ssl on everything.

The reason svn-shilbs depends on neon24-ssl-shlibs is because the
former has been refactored such that it always uses SSL (the

But, nothing in that list rings a bell that would be in conflict with
xfree86. I have attached that list as a text file to this email

Try doing fink-virtual-pkgs --debug again, and paste back the -top-
of the output--all of the files that are being checked.  It's possible
that you're missing a file from X11User.pkg that doesn't cause a
runtime problem.

I didn't think Apple typically updated the X11SDK with newer XCode
verisions but maybe they did.  You'd need to try an X11SDK from a
newer XCode than what came on your machine, like that from XCode 1.5.

 Do you have the X11SDK package installed as well as the
 X11User
 package?  If you only have the User package Apple's X11 will
   -run- and
 you'll be able to install binary packages, but you _must_
 have
   the
 X11SDK package to build _anything_ from source that needs
   X11--whether
 you're using Fink or not.

 It's an optional package in the XCode Tools that isn't
 installed
   by
 default on 10.3.

Actually, that's not quite true.  What we see is that the
system-xfree86* virtual packages aren't installed, so clearly you need
to reinstall the X11SDK package.

No, it says that you have a Fink xfree86 package.  Did you install
Apple's X11 over a Fink XFree86?

 I will try installing a newer version of X11SDK and let you know.

 capture the offending command? FWIW, I did selfupdate, and I repaired
 permission on my disk, to no avail.

It's remotely possible that something in the order of operations could
have something to do with my success--gnucash was near the end of my
update-all.  Check if any packages that look like they're in the list
on this line need updating--there may be a missing versioned
dependendency or something like that (e.g. anything glade-related).

 Below is the listing you asked for. When I saw the 1000:1000 on
 TIMESTAMP.tmp, I thought ah ha, that must be it. So I chowned it to
 root:admin. Fink selfupdate still failed exactly the same way with
 unknown in the rsync command. Looking back at TIMESTAMP.tmp now
 showed root:55002. There is an unknown user in the local netinfo
 database with the uid:gid of 99:99. Is there an easy way to capture
 the installed packages in the current fink tree and then use the info
 to batch reinstall the same packages in a fresh 10.4 tree? If I don't
 have to reinstall each package manually, might it be just easier to
 just start with a fresh sw installation?

On a 10.4 box where I'm doing rsync updating, /sw/fink/TIMESTAMP has
root:55002 ownership, and there's no TIMESTAMP.tmp (as that's
generated by rsyncing).

For a less drastic option, you might want to switch to cvs updating
and then go back to rsync.

OK.  The answer looks to be a problem with a .pc file from recent

I should add that you'd want to download the (renamed) file to

I should add that you'd want to download the (renamed) file to
/sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo, and then you can do

fink install autoconf-2.59-revision

(I don't remember what the last revision was, right off the top of my head)

So I did something similar:

in .../finkinfo/devel/:
cvs update -r1.2 autoconf2.5.info
mv autoconf.info autoconf.info.bkp
mv autoconf2.5.info autoconf.info
[hand-edit the new autoconf.info to make package name match (was 2.5)]
fink selfupdate
fink install autoconf-2.59-7

I did this to avoid perturbing the automake1.9.info (which I also need)
which shows a dependency on autoconf, not autoconf2.5. (There was a
momentary mess in trying to remove the installed package, but blocked by
the dependency.) Now a dumpinfo shows that the debs for autoconf-2.60-4
and 2.59-7 are both available, so I should be able to switch between them
via install. I think the only problem will arise when autoconf.info is
updated, but I can at least repeat the above steps.

 So, I recently installed fink, ran a cvs-selfupdate and afterwards installed 
 amarok-1.4.1 from soruce.

 A day and a half later, my iBook had it all compiled and I was able to launch 
 amarok by starting X11 first and then amarokapp (the amarok binary would not 
 work for some cause I don't know).

 Now I got the problem that amarok can play mp3 files fine and I also can 
 browse directories and play from there, but I was not able to scan my music 
 collection, which I mounted in as /Volumes/music as an afp share.

 When I hit Rescan Collection, it sits there for 10 Seconds and then it is 
 finished. However, scanning my collection should normally take an hour or so 
 via WLAN.

 Has anyone an idea, what I may try? Could there be some dependencies which 
 are not entered in the amarok package? taglib? id3*xy*lib?

It seems to work here, with the following caveats:

1)  It is set to scan ~/Music rather than an afp share.
2)  I do have some of the taglib  id*lib packages:

$ fink list -i taglib id3

Nope.

I prefer fink, but there are a few packages that darwin ports
 has a newer version that I need.

Let the Fink maintainer(s) of the packages know which ones.  It
shouldn't be too much of a hassle to update them, then.

 installed through fink.

 What I'm trying to build is Gourmet http://grecipe-

Fink's looks to be new enough.  Do you have pygtk2-py24-dev installed?

 a another whole section of pythons, gettext, etc... as I am getting
 really short on disk space.


Unfortunately, that's what's going to happen.  The two systems
currently just do not support using each others' packages.

 If there is someone who will work with me to get gourmet running, I
 would really appreciate it. The gourmet mailing list never answers
 Mac questions. I'd love to get it running and to build a fink package.


It looks like something that people would use (I would, for one).

If you do in fact have pygtk2-py24-dev installed, then the next step
would be to look in the config.log file in the gourmet build directory
for what file was being looked for (assuming it failed during
configuration rather than build).

 OK. You have Fink's texi2html installed as the autoconf package
 requires, but it is not used, probably because your PATH doesn't place

I see the same thing.  You might have to go with printing to a
PostScript file and printing it via Preview.app from the Finder.

This was not installed as part of Apple's X11 or by Fink.

As a general note, anything that gets installed under /usr/X11R6 that

Ah.

'fink remove --recursive' uses 'apt-get remove' to do its thing, so
the outputs indeed ought to be the same.

What's going on (I think) is that apt-get and fink don't use identical
dependency tracking, so it's possible for the system to get in a state
that's OK for fink operations on source tarballs, but not for apt-get;
and the latter won't do anything for you untill you resolve its
gripes.

Do you have the X11SDK package installed as well as the X11User
package?  If you only have the User package Apple's X11 will -run- and
you'll be able to install binary packages, but you _must_ have the
X11SDK package to build _anything_ from source that needs X11--whether
you're using Fink or not.
   
It's an optional package in the XCode Tools that isn't installed by
default on 10.3.

 I am reluctant to blow away my existing fink installation since all

 them all.

  package?  If you only have the User package Apple's X11 will -run- and
  you'll be able to install binary packages, but you _must_ have the
  X11SDK package to build _anything_ from source that needs X11--whether
  you're using Fink or not.
 
  It's an optional package in the XCode Tools that isn't installed by

Then it could be that a file is mising from that.  If you run

fink-virtual-pkgs --debug

that should provide some information about what fink isn't finding.

Hmm.  What sort of box is this on?

Try the following 2 commands:

otool -h /sw/lib/libgmp.3.dylib
otool -h /sw/bin/freshclam

See what the cpusubtype column says in each case.  You may just need
to rebuild clamav.

I'll follow up:  if you don't see a bunch of /sw/lib/perl5 directories
for the first command, and the second command doesn't give

/sw/lib/perl5:/sw/lib/perl5/darwin

then it looks like you're not initializing the Fink environment
settings via init.[c]sh .  If so, try running /sw/bin/pathsetup.sh
and see what that gives you.

If you're on 10.4/powerPC, then the answer why you have icewm-1.2.2-2
may be that it was installed as a binary.

In any case, for 10.4, Apple decided to segregate out gcc3.1 and 2.95,
and you can install the XCode Legacy Compilers package to get 3.1, as
the message above says.

I get the same thing.  The only Fin-installed apxs reference on my machine is

for the newer apache2.  I'll cc the maintainer

It could be that name of the current directory is getting prepended to

A similar error was reported for the 10.4-transitional revision of the
same version of doxygen:

The 10.4 tree version ( above) does indeed work for me.  However, I
have different output at the same point:

 Easier said than done.  I spent about 5 hours today downloading all
 4+GB worth of XCode archives and going through every single package in
 every version of XCode, all the way back to 2002 Developer Tools,
 before it was even called XCode, and the
 /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/Test/ files are nowhere to be found, other
 than Tutorial.pod which is of no relevance here.

 Where do the stock Apple-installed versions of Harness, Builder,
 Simple and More come from in the first place?

 At this point I have no idea how to remedy this situation, and can't
 compile much of anything that I need to because of the dependencies on
 the broken T::B::T.  D'oh.  If someone running 10.4.7/PPC who does not
 have this T::B::T compile problem can just send me a tarball of
 .../5.8.6/Test/ I'd be eternally grateful.

They weren't installed as part of any Developer Tools/XCode package,
but from the main system install (Essentials.pkg).

 All of the paths look to be correct, and I even used CPAN to reinstall

Fink Commander has its own table which is _supposed_ to read in the
current information from the command line tools, but there have been
other reports of failures of the table to update.

The installation process uses the real table, so it's right--you
have the latest version.

Remind us what version of, say, gnome-panel you've installed.  There
has been a long-standing issue with the version in the unstable tree
not having menu support due to to issues with collisions between the
GNOME menu and KDE menu.  These are gradually being resolved, but
since GNOME hasn't had a full-time maintainer for a while so
progress has been somewhat slowed.

 I'd search the archives but they are down.

You might consider one of the window managers that has a -rootless
option then.  I personally use quartz-wm with Xorg (but that requires
you to have access to your install media again)
