RE: Can't print from Frame

2007-04-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
Tina,

Bubbamisa!

Good try, but absolutely groundless. The optimize for
portability hack was put into the Windows driver to deal
with some applications, FrameMaker NOT being among them,
that injected their own PostScript into the driver's output
stream improperly, interfering with the current graphics
state of the PostScript job. It also makes a bit of a
difference how fonts and procedure definitions (what you
are calling a shorthand version of PostScript are put
into the job, but certainly not how they are used.

If in fact, use of the optimize for portability option
causes something to print that doesn't otherwise print
from FrameMaker, you are dealing with either (1) a very
traif EPS file (EPS file improperly constructed, not
following the rules for EPS files), (2) an otherwise terribly
misconfigured printer driver or print itself or (3) a very
crufty PostScript RIP / printer.

 Hi Gillian

If you look in your postscript settings on the printer
dialog there will be an option that says something like
Optimize for speed change this to Optimize for portability.
Speed gives a shorthand version of postscript which confuses
some printers, while portability includes everything (this is
how it was explained to me not sure if it is correct or not
but generally fixes the crazy stack errors).

Moving book sections to nested folders without losing X refs

2007-04-05 Thread Kevin Hunter
hi all,

I have two large books that have dozens of cross references to each other.
Because of a structural change to our software and the creation of a new
sub-version of this application, I'm trying to rearrange the erstwhile book
chapters, in both books, into subfolders to keep things a little more
organized. Does anyone have any tips on how to move a chapter to a new
subfolder (in explorer) in such a way that I don't have to then re-build all my
cross references manually?

Re: Moving book sections to nested folders without losing X refs

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell

Well, first, don't use Explorer.

You may want to use Bruce Foster's Archive plug in to make a safe copy
of the book(s) and all the component parts before you begin.

To do the actual move, open the book files and use the Rename File
tool to rename the component/chapter files, one by one, into the new
folder(s). If you do it this way, cross-refs and such should be
maintained.

Hi Drew... yes, it's quite easy. Work out the visual dimension of the object
you want to bleed, *add* the bleed to it, and draw that on the master. Position
it flush to the edge of the page, and then nudge the graphic off the page by an
amount equal to the size of the bleed.

If you cut PDF onto a larger 'paper' size than your FrameMaker page, and turn
on trims, you should be able to see the bleeds to check their size and
positioning.

Re: FrameMaker deals on eBay...

2007-04-05 Thread Alan Houser
Just a follow-up to Scott's note -- Adobe's FrameMaker upgrade policy is
one of the most liberal that I've seen from a major software company.
You can purchase FrameMaker 7.2 for Windows at the upgrade price of $199
USD if you have _any_ previous version of FrameMaker or FrameMaker+SGML
(the UNIX price is slightly higher).

Adobe has publicly stated that a new release of FrameMaker will be
available this year. If the new version is a major release (e.g.,
FrameMaker 8.0), one can speculate that the upgrade price may be
substantially higher. As a data point, the upgrade price for FrameMaker
7.0 was approximately $400 USD.

Good point. Software showing up in droves on eBay, of
a particular package, reflects *a belief* that a new
version is coming soon as merchants clear out their
stock. The guys who show up to computer shows and hawk
their wares on PriceWatch are the ones I'm thinking
of, and a few of them here in H-town have been offer
specials on FrameMaker recently.

(As an aside, they should rename eBay caveat emptor
and I never buy software there.)

Thanks for the heads up, Dov!

PDF comments hiding in FM...

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell

I have a PDF in a FM file imported by reference. Although it contains
several comments (callouts, highlighting, etc.) they don't display in
FM. I know they're on a different layer in the PDF, but I was figuring
if they're visible, they're visible all the time.

I'm going to try opening it in Photoshop and maybe flattening it, but
does anyone have an idea how to make them display in FM? I'd like to
keep them live.

XP SP2
FM 7.2
Acrobat 8

Thanks,
Art

Re: Can't print from Frame

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell

To amplify Dov's analysis... if you look at the Xerox spec pages for
the 45, they make a subtle point of saying that it uses a PostScript 3
EMULATOR. Not true Adobe PostScript.

As a result of fighting with emulators for years on a variety of H-P
and other Xerox printers, I think that it's a pretty safe bet that the
printer will get squirrely at other interesting times, especially when
printing clean but complex PS code that confuses the emulator.

Hi, Art:

Have you tried printing the PDF document with comments, from Acrobat, to
the Distiller printer? There are several options for
comment-with-document layouts. Import the one you like to FrameMaker.

FrameMaker doesn't give you control over Acrobat layers; InDesign does,
but I haven't experimented with the comment layers in InDesign...yet!

No, I haven't tried looping it like that yet, but I bet it'll work.
Flattening and saving in another format works, but I was hoping to
keep the comments alive, so they could be modified on the fly.

Moving book sections to nested folders without losing X refs

Hmmm ... I have, in the past, not been able to get those version 5.5
templates to work in recent versions of FrameMaker. When I run the
executable files, it gives me errors about the version of FrameMaker

So, how do I make them work for me? Is there another source for these

FrameMaker deals on eBay...

Make no such assumption, especially when dealing with
eBay. The prices mentioned reflect (1) someone has

(As an aside, they should rename eBay "caveat emptor"
and I never buy software there.)

Thanks for the heads up, Dov!

Turn off "Generate Tagged PDF" in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog box,
Tags tab;
recreate the .ps and distill again.

What does page 296 (or maybe 297) contain? Maybe a graphic in EPS or
PDF format, or a Visio imported as an OLE object?

Might want to check and see if there's a problem with the graphic; if
you can distill without it present. Or just try to distill that page.

Page 226 & 227 is page 3 & 4 of Chapter 7 (of 8 with two appendices, front
matter, and a TOC).
I can distill chapter 7 separately and successfully create a PDF.

There are no graphics. on those pages.
there is however; A cross-reference, which I will delete and recreate, and
try again.

Apologies to those who've already heard about this.

Remember the paperless office? How all documents would be created,
distributed, and viewed electronically? Well even though that never
happened - and in most likelihood never will, there are still huge
benefits to be reaped by taking an intelligent approach to document
management - from creation to "recycling".

Attend this educational eSeminar sponsored by Xerox to learn how you can
take control of your documents - both print and electronic - and bring
the content in your documents to life - activating that content to help
streamline business processes, and integrated what's in those documents
into databases and other 'structured' data stores.

Hear from experts at Xerox' famous Palo Alto Research Center (PARC),
home of innovations like the graphical user interface and the computer

PS to PDF (Distiller) Error

OKay tried that, as well.
Also tried saving the identified file as MIF, and resaving as FM.

I've got a deadline for the PDF,
so for now, as a temporary solution,
I will have to PDF ea file, and then put them back together as one PDF
using Acrobat.

The PDF Setup you have at the book level may be overridden by some
chapters. This sometimes also happens with bookmarks, where Hn-TOC items
in
the Table of Contents are carried over as bookmarks, even though not
selected at the book level.

In your book, select all chapters but do not select the top title line,
then select Format > PDF Setup and change settings as needed. Recreate the

.ps and distill, and all should be OK.

I'd like to
keep them "live."

XP SP2
FM 7.2
Acrobat 8

Thanks,
Art

Can't print from Frame

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell
To amplify Dov's analysis... if you look at the Xerox spec pages for
the 45, they make a subtle point of saying that it uses a PostScript 3
EMULATOR. Not true Adobe PostScript.

As a result of fighting with emulators for years on a variety of H-P
and other Xerox printers, I think that it's a pretty safe bet that the
printer will get squirrely at other interesting times, especially when
printing clean but complex PS code that confuses the emulator.

PDF comments hiding in FM...

2007-04-05 Thread Peter Gold

PDF comments hiding in FM...

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell
No, I haven't tried looping it like that yet, but I bet it'll work.
Flattening and saving in another format works, but I was hoping to
keep the comments alive, so they could be modified on the fly.

Thanks!
