Re: [Framers] Including a non-breaking hyphen in a variable

2022-05-12 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

I created a bug report in the Adobe Tracker.
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-11682

I only added the request to add a cross-reference from the section
about special characters.
Feel free to vote and add your suggestions.

Best regards

I agree that it would have been a lot better if they used a title like "Typing
special characters? in dialog boxes".

I worked in Archives in my misspent youth, creating archival entries for new
collections. A side effect was learning to create great queries that have stood
me in good stead since the internet "came along".

A big exception is trying to find a specific way to do something in Frame,
either on the web or in the manual.

I would never have looked for "Typing in dialog boxes".

Thanks!

I didn't see the original query, but the answer is actually contained in almost
every edition of the hard-copy manual. Look in the appendixes for one called
"Typing in dialog boxes". This appendix contains tables listing all of the
"escape codes" for characters that cannot be typed directly with a single
keyboard keystroke. For the Windows version of Framemaker, the "escape"
character is the backslash, which is the first character of every one of the
listed codes.

The more I dig into long-unused memory to look for what I used to know about
FM, the less I find, because there's too much dust and rust in the way.
Instead, I try a Web search, and find how true it is that "nothing every dies
on the internet." Have you tried something like "framemaker non-breaking hyphen
in variable"? There's a ton of results. At least a few might be correct.

Hi Alison,

This is described in the appendix in the section "Typing in dialog boxes".
For a non-breaking hyphen enter: \+

Windows 10
FrameMaker subscription (fully updated).

We use a project number format to identify our custom projects (eg, G19-6820,
H21-2500, etc).

I always turn the project numbers into variables but I can't figure out to make
the hyphen into a non-breaking version when I create the variable.

I know it has something to do with a backslash (\), but I'm not sure what else
is involved.

Re: [Framers] transitioning from Frame 7 to 2020

2022-04-22 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Rick,

But she would need the script on FM 7, wouldn't she?
ExtendScript was introduced later.
And I do not know, if FrameScript was already available for FM 7.
On FM 2020 possibly an easy MIF wash.

Re: [Framers] transitioning from Frame 7 to 2020

2022-04-22 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Wendy,

I think that FM 2020 is much better than FM 7!
And Acrobat does not cause any problems.
In my experience FM 2020 in the latest version is very stable.
After the installation update to FM 16.0.4 (Help | Updates).
16 is the internal major version number.

Yes. Saving as MIF from FM 7 and then saving this with FM 2020 is a good idea.
If you have lots of files, you might buy FrameScript and ask
one of the developers on this list to provide a script which saves
as MIF automatically.

Your fonts should only be a problem, if you have a font with a special
encoding, e.g. for Eastern European languages.
(In marker text this could be a problem.)
FM now transfers also old non-Unicode fonts without issues.
Generally I would strongly recommend to switch to a Unicode font!

Apart from this I never heard of any issues.
And also users who upgrade with each version have old files which they have
to update.

Yes. You can install as many FM versions in parallel as you like.
(With Acrobat you can install only one version.)
You do not have to uninstall FM 7.
Only install Acrobat first and then FM.
If you install on a new PC, install Acrobat first, then FM 7 and then FM 2020.
Then the fm file name extension will be bound to FM 2020.
If you have Acrobat Standard or Pro, do not install the headless Acrobat
Distiller of FM 7!

Best regards

Hi, Framers,

We are finally going to bite the bullet and upgrade our nice, stable Frame 7 to
the newest version. Theoretically, an old version of Frame should have no
problems being opened into the newest version. But I have a feeling there may
be problems opening some of our really old files because of old graphics and
font problems and other miscellaneous weirdnesses. And IT will probably be
upgrading us to the new Acrobat version as well.

I may be worrying too much and it may work just fine; just want to be proactive
based on my experience with upgrades screwing up things that used to work.

This is an old thread but here is a comment. I fundamentally rely on FrameMaker
and would never "bash" it. On the other hand, right now at the end of a
two-year book-writing process, with the camera-ready due on Monday, I got a
crash this afternoon. Not the first -- in my experience, if I am working on a
book a FrameMaker session does not last more than three or four days before it
vanishes -- but possibly the worst ever. The supposed recovery files were
corrupted; just to restart from the backup to a stable state took almost two
hours. I do back up obsessively (as I have been burned many times before), but
still. And when you are in delicate fine-tuning, typo-fixing and final indexing
mode, working over several chapters at once, going through every recent change
to see which were kept and which were lost, is a nightmare.

One might imagine that by this time they would have either fixed the crashes or
devised a decent recovery mechanism.

There is still nothing that measures up to FrameMaker for writing books with a
sophisticated structure, but if it did respect the integrity of customers' work
that wouldn't hurt.

I don't know why everyone likes bashing FrameMaker.

Is there anything else that:
• Is suitable for long books.
• Gives you PDF output as is appears while you are working (WYSIWYG).
• Can be converted to online help, (even if it requires buying an extra
program).

FM happens to have online help conversion built-in, but I could live without
that if that was another decent authoring tool that worked together with
another decently priced conversion tool.

Word comes close to checking all those boxes, but has problems with large files
and other issues.

Someone mention another page layout program recently, but I forgot what it was.
Maybe it was Xara Page & Layout Designer. But can it do online help at all?

Please post if you know of another authoring tool that is excellent for PDFs
and can be used for online help.

My biggest gripe with FM is the price, but you know what, you really don't need
to buy every new version that comes out. Do you buy every new smartphone that
comes out, or wait until you need a new phone? Anyone under 20 is excluded from
answering that question :)

Hi Scott,

I still use FrameScript, and I can assure you that I have to
register FrameScript again after each update.
FrameScript adds a line in
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2020\maker.ini
and not in
c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\16\maker.ini
Each update overrides maker.ini in the Program Files folder.

Lynne...

Some updates have replaced the INI, but I don't recall it happening often
(maybe I've blocked those memories). I'd switch to the "user" area if Adobe
provided a "$USERDIR" variable for structured applications. If you move the
apps into the user area, you have to hard-code the path in the application
definition .. annoying and error prone. So since I keep using $STRUCTDIR in my
app definitions, I have to install things in the Program Files area, so I keep
using the default maker.ini (not a great excuse, but that's my thinking).

Thanks for the tip with "back" .. although it seems to not be persistent. Guess
it's not related to the update install.

Cheers,
...scott

Re: [Framers] elusive transparent background

2022-01-30 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

It's a few years ago that I had needed images with transparent background.

As far as I remember:
Use EPS format. Clipping path with background colour is transparent.
Import this into a FM file.
Select the file and in the Graphics toolbar remove the colour (Fill is None).
(The display in the FM file does not show the transparency. Only the PDF.)
Create your PDF. Possibly you have to use the Distiller.

Bernd Meissner described this in this short PDF:
http://www.meissner-dokuteam.de/Files/Frame/Transparency2_p250.pdf

In the Adobe forum Arnis Gubins wrote a very detailed description.
I think that you need only the EPS part.

Best regards

Try export PSD to PDF and insert by reference (always, always by reference!).
Alternately, depending on the logo, transparent GIF (i.e., spot color logo) or
even TIFF (gradients). Transparency support has always been finicky in FM, and
even more so once FM went all DITA. WORST case, accept the suck and use a
matching background color whenever you overlay anything other than white, even
if it means multiple variants of the referenced image files. Hope this helps,

Re: [Framers] TOC issue

2022-01-10 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Tammy,

I just read your post about line breaks.

What you can do:
In the paragraph designer in the Advanced tab change the Minimum
and Maximum values of your TOC paragraphs:
Minimum 200 %
Maximum 125 %
This will create an automatic line break shortly before the right end of the
lines.
I have this setting for many years now, and only very rarely do I have to add
a manual line break.
You can change the values to get the line break earlier or later.
Just experiment a little bit.

Best regards

Right now, when I have lines that don't wrap correctly in my TOC (based on the
length of the text for a tag), I am going through and manually adding the
needed breaks, but of course, this is tedious work and I loathe doing it every
time I produce a final book because either I forget to do it or I miss a line
or two.

Wasn't there a script "out there somewhere?" that magically did this for you?

If anyone remembers this script and can point me in the right direction (other

appreciate it.

Re: [Framers] Adobe Acrobat Pro XI Distiller issue

2021-12-10 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Tammy,

I do not know, why you cannot create the PDF.
Often on the last distilled page (or the previous or following page) there is a
problem like a graphics file.
Can you check this?
Can you distill to a PDF, when you hide all graphics (View | Options)?

You can create a PDF with Distiller with a specific joboptions file.
I do this all the time.
In the Publish pod select PDF and then click on the icon to the right of your
settings file. Click Edit.
FrameMaker opens the Publish Settings of your settings file.
In the General tab you can select a Preset (which is the joboptions file).
At the bottom of this window select "Use Acrobat Distiller ...".
Then FrameMaker will create an internal PostScript file and distill to this to
a PDF
in the same folder as the book file or the FM file.

FrameMaker will use this settings for all PDFs, not only for that of the
current FM file or book.

Best regards

Since the cows have come home, I print a FM book to .ps to a watched folder,
and then w/ Acrobat Distiller open and set to the correct joboptions file, I
distill the .ps to a PDF. It has worked like a charm all the way through
yesterday when boom - now the book is distilled to about 93% w/out errors and
then Acrobat Distiller just closes. NO error message, nada, zip, zilch.

I have changed ABSOLUTELY nothing on my system, taken no updates, etc.

I have absolutely NO idea why/how this got started, but I am in desperate need
of getting this figured out because I have a specific joptions file that I must

Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi,

I do not know anything about InDesign's export to HTML5, but I think
that you will want to switch to that format (or at least provide HTML5

When you use your software , this is much easier to read than PDF.

New management is pushing for the overall use of InDesign for marketing
collateral and technical documentation at my company.
I'm a long time Frame user, producing a set of software documentation ranging
from release notes, installation guides, API guides, and a 160-page user guide.
All are delivered as PDF files.

I've been asked to figure out whether or not InDesign will fit my documentation
needs, and have many questions.

  * Most importantly: Can InDesign generate good PDF files, with working
links?
  * Is InDesign good for large documents (100-160 pages), with TOCs, and lots
of internal and external cross-references?
  * Can I transfer my existing paragraph and character styles from Frame to
InDesign?
  * Can I import a Frame book into InDesign?

Has anyone out there successfully switched from Frame to Indesign?
Is this a non-starter for the type of documents I produce?

Any advice, thoughts or pointers are greatly appreciated!

Way back in the dark ages, when FrameMaker was first ported to Windows, I
worked with a FM staff member, Mercedes (still fondly remember her), to address
bugs and issues. She sent me updates via overnight courier and these were
multiple disk sets, calling for a fresh install. The reason I remember her name
is because we talked almost daily and installation disks arrived weekly or more
until the issue count dropped.

Of course, I don't expect this level of customer service anymore from any
software publisher, but through the years I have had bits and pieces of
exemplary support. On a contract to bring a trade book to press, I worked with
Dov over the phone as to why illustrations with schematics wouldn't reproduce
lines. and this from the printer's site in Michigan.
More recently, I worked with Adobe to resolve an issue where importing and
converting a MS Word document crashed FrameMaker (MS Word Track Changes caused
the problem - this was last year).

I am not happy with the subscription model as I believe it's an egregious
affront to hold the software hostage when missing a subscription payment. From
a business point of view, it's a cash flow solution, reducing the seasonal
vagaries of software sales. But it's not customer-centric. And this is a
problem.

A while back, someone on this forum mentioned difficulty finding a FrameMaker
manual. I have a 1241 page Adobe PDF version dated June 1,
2021 on the cover page. It's a 46MB file, but if anyone wants a copy, I'll post
it where it can be downloaded.

Re: [Framers] Stefan wanted to know why so many of us Adobe users "feel" the way we do about Adobe

2021-10-14 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

OK. I did not have such severe problems as some of you.
My impression is that Adobe and the FrameMaker development reacts
much more quickly than "in the good old days", when there was no-one
from Adobe to talk to. And at least now FrameMaker is as stable as
e.g. FM 7.
Adobe now also releases updates every some months to fix bugs and
to add new features.
Some years ago there was nothing.

Yes. Everything can be better, but the situation is not as bad as some
of you imply.

Because every single solitary time that I have to uninstall/reinstall an Adobe

down and yep, it pulled a doozy on me this week, and thanks to Adobe, I lost a
good 2 hours' worth of work to get my system back up to 'snuff.

I can give details if interested, but I just wanted to chime in to the thread
from a few weeks ago, where someone stated that they feel that Adobe hates
their customers. . . well, yea, I understand that feeling. I LOVE Adobe
products. . . I HATE installing/uninstalling them and I hate that Adobe
apparently does absolutely NO regression/system testing on their stuff when it
comes to this.

Count me in as another very dissatisfied and p*ssed off Adobe customer who is
grateful to be semi-retired and not having to deal w/ this cr*p for much longer.

Re: [Framers] ps file being used by another process

2021-09-10 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Bodvar,

When you use Save as PDF, do you use FrameMaker's internal
PDF engine? Or Distiller?
Do you get these messages also with other files or only with this book?
Are these files on a network?

As a short help I would copy all files of the book to another folder
(best locally) and create the PDF there.

When you get these messages, it sounds, as if FrameMaker has not
completed the PS creation.
Or possibly something with your anti-virus software?

Did you restart Windows?
Do others have access to these files?

Hi Framers,

I am suddenly stuck with a new problem. When trying to print an fm file to ps
and then distilling it I either get the message "Cannot open this file.
The file is being used by another process."
Even if I close Framemaker I still get this message.
Also, if I try to open the ps file in Distiller, I get the message that I don't
have the permission to open the file. And when trying to change the ownership
of the file, I just get another similar message and the file disappears.
Save as pdf gives the same kind of error messages.
And Adobe PDF is my default printer.
What could be wrong?

I'm on a deadline, so any help soon would be appreciated.
Earlier today I had no problem pdf-ing from Affinity Publisher.

That says: This parameter is set during the installation.

Your error message is:

What are your Find settings in the Spelling Options

___

OK,

This was happening in FM12 and now with a standalone new install with FM2019,
so I give because as a standalone install (it was not an upgrade install), the
dictionaries should be new and not corrupted - in theory! The word "potential"
is getting flagged as a possible misspelling in my current document set, and
based on the section that I am writing currently, it's driving me insane. If I
right-click on a flagged instance of "potential," I can select either Learn the
Word or Allow in Document and still get the same cryptic message:

"You cannot add potential to a dictionary. To add potential to a dictionary,
first deselect the corresponding Find setting in the Spelling Checker Options
dialog box."

What friggin' Find setting? There isn't an applicable one selected. . . it's
not a repeated word, etc.

Any advice on how to solve this inane problem?

Thanks!

Re: [Framers] How do I edit the personal dictionary in FM 12?

2021-07-26 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Tom,

When you write your dictionary to a file, you can edit it with a text editor
and delete all misspelled words. Then import the file to replace your current
dictionary.
All is explained in the online help:
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/using-framemaker/user-guide/frm_text_tx-dictionary-functions-dialog.html

Before your start checking, you can also write all unknown words to a file,
edit this file and merge it with your dictionary.
That's often faster than walking through your FrameMaker file or book.

Re: [Framers] Regular Expressions

2021-07-16 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

Yes! Regular expressions are extremely valuable!
I use regular expressions in scripts very rarely. But that's only because I
will have
to learn, how to use them in scripts.
I use regular expressions mainly for these tasks:
o Select a certain group of files in my file manager. Modify file names.
  (I really like Total Commander!)
o Use Notepad++ to modify text from our software terminology (special format)
and other texts.
o And of course in FrameMaker, when I have more complex search/replace tasks.

Once I figured out the regular expression pattern, the rest of it was easy.

Note that in FrameMaker, the regular expression A-Z finds lowercase

Re: [Framers] Does new FrameMaker actually split footnotes across pages? and SetPrint Qs

2021-06-11 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Wendy,

Yes. Thank you for your comments!
When you can create a virtual box on your PC, you can install a test version of
FrameMaker 2020 there.

SetPrint is a little freeware utiliy. Just download the dll and copy it into
the specified folder.
Create a small text file SetPrint.ini (as described on the SetPrint website)
and put it into the same folder as the dll.
Then close and restart FrameMaker.
That's it.

I appreciate the feedback for my questions, especially the positive notes from
Reng Winfried and Lin Sims about Frame 2020. (It helps to hear that somebody
actually does have some good experience with the software.) I would like to try
the free trial of the new version but don't know if our IT department has a
nonproduction computer that I could put it on that wouldn't screw anything up
with our current Frame.

Thanks to those who have replied. I did have a good laugh at Peter Gold's note:
"When I've had to wrestle with this issue, if there was time, and willingness
to cooperate, I'd try to work with the author to re-write or re-order the
material." We're dealing with lawyers here-we can barely get them to submit
materials in the first place, let alone revise (most of them are volunteer
authors, so there is no incentive other than getting their name in the book and
having contributed to the book as an expert on the topic).

I actually had thought of SetPrint-does anyone know how to get a copy of it? We
have just two people now, so that's all we would need. We're on Windows 10,
Frame 7.0, using Acrobat X Pro. Does it have to be installed by an Admin or is
it simply something we could put in the Frame software folder ourselves?

Re: [Framers] Does new FrameMaker actually split footnotes across pages?

2021-06-08 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

I use FM 2020, and I would never go back!

Regarding your font issue: Do you use the SetPrint utility?
With this small plug-in you can set a default printer only for FrameMaker,
e.g. Adobe PDF. This way nothing will change, when you create your
PDF files.
The file name extension of your PostScript files will always be ps and not prn.
As FM 2020 has its own publishing engine, you do not need this plugin in FM
2020.

Subject: [Framers] Does new FrameMaker actually split footnotes across pages?

Hi, Framers!

We have been using Frame 7.0 forever and it has always been stable and worked
for us, so we never upgraded (especially after hearing complaints from this
list about the interface, problems, etc. of subsequent versions). We do have
font issues in creating PDFs with the latest Acrobat, where switching printer
drivers (we print to Postscript and distill to PDF) can cause slight font
differences. Most of the time it doesn't cause any problems, but there have
been instances of some bumped text.

I think we finally may switch to the latest Frame (will be using unstructured).
I looked at the website demo and it looks like the basic product is the same;
we just would have to get used to the different UI with its pods. But I
couldn't believe they actually have fixed the footnote problem where the
footnote bumps to the next page if it won't fit on the same page as its
reference number.

I'm still a little skeptical, though, whether the new version actually "splits"
the footnote like Word does and puts part of the note on the next page or
whether the new Frame just moves the whole note to be on the same page as the
reference number, leaving a big ugly gap on the page.

I'm also worried we'll have to go without IXGEN anymore, as I understand it
only works with 32-bit and the new Frame is strictly 64-bit.

I love our good ol' Frame, but am tired of worrying about the font changes in
PDFing and having to manually wrangle footnotes. Can anyone give me any advice
on how good the latest version is? Now that it's subscription only, will we be
stuck having to upgrade as new versions come out, whether we want to or not?

It's not a memory size issue with the VM, as upping it from 4 GB to 16 GB

Tomorrow I'll try relocating the JPEGs to a folder local to the Windows VM.

Hi,

Yes. In Acrobat the mouse pointer size is ignored.
You could create a bug report here:

However, in FM 2020 a large mouse pointer is still large.
You cannot expect that FM 2017 would be fixed.

Hello,

Windows 10 allows for mouse cursor pointers to be customised, and so I when I
give training course, I like to use a larger mouse pointer, and colour it so
that you can see it more easily when your video output it for a projector.

The larger mouse pointers work well on many applications.
Except Adobe.

* Adobe Acrobat Reader shows the large size & coloured mouse pointer at the
expected size when viewing Help > About Adobe Acrobat Reader, or when accessing
dialogs, such as Edit > Preferences.  But as soon as your mouse pointer touches
the PDF document, it shrivels to the standard monochrome pointer at the default
Windows size.

* Adobe FrameMaker 2017 appears to use some historic UI constructs. Click
inside your document, and the mouse pointer stays large, but becomes badly
blocky and monochrome, and looks like it's an 8 bit application with zero
anti-aliasing, completely devoid of any colour concept.  The structure view is
similarly affected.

Does anyone else have accessibility issues with Adobe Products?

Re: [Framers] Paragraph Style Issue

2021-04-16 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Alison,

Do you have this issue for all paragraphs? No matter in which paragraph
your insertion mark is?
If only in a specific paragraph, there is a special paragraph property which you
can see only in MIF. This would allow only that you enter text, but you cannot
change the paragraph format.
Enter some characters which you can find easily, e.g. ü.
Then convert to MIF, open in a text editor and search for these characters.
The paragraph could have a property nach .
Just change this to No. Save and open in FrameMaker.

If this is not the case, your description does not match my Paragraph Designer.
I have only a single checkbox for Small Caps/Uppercase/Lowercase and not two
as you describe.

64 bit

I know I'm going to kick myself when I get the answer, but I've been away from
Frame so long, some of the simplest things are taking a while to come back to
me.

I am editing and creating new Para styles and for some reason, when I set the
Font characteristics for an incredibly simple (new) style, it won't retain a
specific setting.

Namely, Frame seems to be "insisting" that the style include the checkboxes for
both Lower Case and Upper Case (all lower case is the winner as I can't enter
an upper case letter in the text).

No matter how many times I deselect the checkboxes, no matter the order of
deselection and Update Style, they always reapply themselves.

Have I found some weird bug or am I doing something wrong?

Note that this hasn't affected any of the other new and updated styles I've
worked on so far.

FYI: The style uses 11 pt regular Calibri, with 12 points below and a 6mm
hanging indent.

Re: [Framers] Basic Questions on Installing FrameMaker

2021-04-06 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Alison,

FrameMaker creates PDF files via Save As PDF with its own engine.
The printer is not involved. This works very well.

There can be requirements that you create the PDF via Distiller,
but this is also automated. You can still use Save As PDF.

You do not need to print to a PostScript file.
SetPrint cannot be installed (FM 2020 is 64 bit) and is not needed.
There isn't any headless Distiller in FM 2020.

I seem to remember that there were some issues using unstructured FrameMaker

had to be selected at install and Frame and Acrobat had to be installed in a
particular order (I've had Acrobat installed for the last 3 years so I need to

I also remember a tiny (free?) tool called something like "Set_Print". Does
that still exist and is it still necessary?

It feels weird to be a Frame newby after using it for 9 years in my last job.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Hi Sue,

Your FrameMaker version is the latest one. That's good.
Some questions:
Only Save as PDF does not work? Print to a PostScript file is OK?
Can you activate/deactivate the option Use Acrobat Distiller for
PDF generation (in the Publish pod, PDF, settings file).
Do you have this issue with all your books and single files?
Structured and non-structured?
Also when you create a new file with the FrameMaker default
templates?
When this started, was there anything special? Did you install
another application? Any software updates? Windows updates?
Any changes in your anti-virus application?
Can you save as PDF when you deactivate your anti-virus application?

Dear Steve and Lin,

Thanks for the comments. A cross-references forces me to use a cross-reference
format for the link, e.g. "section 4.5". I cannot use a reference format, I
want to use an arbitrary text for the linking text, as in "this is explained in
the discussion of cat problems", where the underlined text (I hope the mailing
list mailer keeps the underline) is my own text but a link to some chosen place.

Hyperlinks to this but force me in each case to add two commands, a gotolink at
the source and a newlink at the target, which is horrendously tedious if one
has thousands such cases. The newlink is not conceptually necessary since all
the targets are paragraphs so I should be able simply to choose from a
paragraph list as with cross-references.

With best regards,

IIRC there's a way to expose the information in links within a PDF. Perhaps the
"missing link" to the failure can be found there. Unfortunately, I've forgotten

Re: [Framers] Acrobat DC & Frame etc

2020-04-27 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Caroline,

The features which you list are not in Acrobat Reader.
Therefore you would have to buy a licence or subscription.
FrameMaker comes only with an add-on which can create
PDFs from your FrameMaker files.

Here are comparisons of the different versions:

Subject: [Framers] Acrobat DC & Frame etc

Hi.

I have Frame 2017 on my system and Acrobat Pro DC, as part of Creative suite.

For some reason, IT have decided to remove the Acrobat (and creative suite)

1. Will I still be able to create PDF files, or will they have to reinstall
Frame in order to be able to use the built in PDF in Frame?

2. What won't I be able to do to PDF files if I only have the version that
comes with Frame?

I currently add password protection to files, make numbering of pdf match file
numbering, extract pages, edit files.

What functionality will I be losing?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Book and Doc Templates.

2020-04-16 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

I also use PureText. Very handy, not only for FrameMaker
(e.g. Outlook, Excel, etc.)!
http://stevemiller.net/puretext/

When I reformat Word imports, I copy my heading format
into the clipboard and then search for the numbering of the
equivalent Word format with regular expressions or wildcards.
Then paste the clipboard content.
Or you can search for the Word paragraph format in FrameMaker
and then paste your format.
The same with list formats.

Yes, tables and graphics must be handled separately.

Is anyone aware of a script for adding/creating variables from a list/table?

Ideally, you'd have the variable on one column, and the values on the other.

Re: [Framers] Applying Show/Hide Conditional Settings

2020-01-15 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi John,

When there are bullets without content, then the paragraph mark
does not have the condition.
When this is at the end of a flow (in a table cell or at the end of the
main text flow), then add an empty paragraph without condition
after the paragraph with the condition.

You asked whether you can import regular expressions into other files.
I checked this and could import the regular expressions from another
file.
Just use File | Import | Formats. Then select Conditional Text Settings.

Robert...I think this can work. I have to do some tweeks, like add a default
condition for sections and files that don't have an owner yet so that I can
exclude those sections from each "personal SME book build". I should be able to
define 19 expressions, one for each content owner.

I also noticed that some tiny snippets got through. like some bullets without
content, stuff like that. However, it has potential.

Question...I have a "RunBookTemplate" document where I define all of my styles,
and when I define or modify a style, I make it in the template, then copy the
appropriate formats to all the files in the book from the tempalte. Can I store
my Expressions in that document and when I create a new document or add a new
Expression, replicate the new or modified Expressions to the new document or
all the documents in the book?

Anyway..thanks for the tip...I think this is going to work for me.

Thank you

Re: [Framers] FM19 Publish PDF Problem

2020-01-08 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi John,

I remember vaguely that sometimes the PDF printer was not
installed correctly. Users just had to install a trial version of the
current Acrobat version and then this feature worked.
It was not needed to upgrade Acrobat entirely.

FrameMaker 2019 does not care which printer is the default printer
or which printer is selected for Save As PDF or Publish to PDF.
(I always have set our local printer, and use Distiller to create the PDF,
and it still works. And Amitoj Singh had confirmed this.)

Please correct me, when I am wrong. You just installed FrameMaker,
and you might remember this. I think that there isn't any option
to install or not install any headless Distiller with FrameMaker 2019.
FrameMaker uses its own PDF engine.

What did you set in the Publish pod to create your PDF? With Distiller or
without?

Re: [Framers] FM2019 Volume and Chapter Numbering

2020-01-07 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

In a previous job the figure numbers and table numbers
were a combination of the chapter number and a running
number in this file:
Figure x-x
Table x-x

This works only, when the figure and table format use the
same series as heading1.
This is an argument for a single all-in-one numbering scheme.
I do not use the chapnum placeholder, as I want to be free to
have several chapters in a single file.

The only problem I've run into is when an extra heading needs to be added
in--assuming you want all the heading markers all in a row and not randomly
placed anywhere in the code as they are added. The code has to be updated
everywhere if it's an all-in-one code. Nothing that can't be overcome, but I've
always found it a lot easier if the headings are a separate list--simply create
a new heading level (e.g. Heading6), add another before the last , and
done.

Also, sometimes I only want users to use the editing features--catalogs, spell
checker, find/change, user variables, etc.--and stay away from the reference
pages, master pages, and the various designers.

Hi,

My PDF of a user guide made from a FrameMaker book has the front matter
numbered with Roman numerals, so the numbers of the PDF do not match those of
the Frame file. (Frame p1 is PDF p9).

I have found and adjusted instructions to make the numbering match

https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/PDF17.html

(It is different in the latest version of Acrobat, as these controls seem to be
more hidden).
But it needs to be done manually each time.
Is there any way to automate this, or set these settings in FrameMaker to carry
over to Acrobat?

Thanks

Good morning, everyone.

For the first time using FrameMaker, I'm exploring generating outputs other
than PDF.

I'm exploring Responsive HTML.

When I generate, through Publish, to a local drive, everything is great.
However, when I switch the output folder to a network drive (only difference),
it generates fine, but when I try to launch the project, I get that it cannot
reach the page. Even if I go to the location and launch the Index.html, I get
that it can't reach the page.

I'm going to guess this is a permissions type of issue. Before I go to my
network people, is there any input you can give me that makes me appear less
of a dunce?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Frame Properties

2019-12-12 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Doug,

I am not sure which object properties you want to show.

When your object properties pod is open, you see the
properties of inserted graphics.

When you click Insert | Anchored Frame, this opens the
Anchored Frame pod.
When you now click on any anchored frame, the pod
shows immediately the dimensions and the anchoring.

However, you will not get the properties of text frames
or of FrameMaker graphics objects (lines, rectangles, etc.).
Create a new request in the Adobe Tracker:
https://tracker.adobe.com/
Post the issue number, and I will vote for it.

Thanks for the response.

Part of the problem is that both text frames and graphic frames use modal
Properties dialogs. This means I'm not able to save a workspace while they are
on-screen. This is unlike the images themselves, and anchored frames, which
use modeless dialogs; I can leave those on-screen all the time.

I guess what I need is a way to display a modal dialog in a modeless manner.
It seems to be such an arbitrary distinction, text/graphic frames vs.
image/anchored frames.

In this respect Framemaker seems to be quite behind the standard set by other
Adobe apps, like InDesign, Illustrator, etc.

Re: [Framers] weird bug - Variable at start of paragraph sometimes vanishes

Hi John,

Yes. I had encounterd this issue as well.
In my rememberance I had imported variable formats although
the variables had a condition applied and this condition was hidden.

I think that I had to show everything and then import the variable
formats again. Or show everything and then select the variable
and change its value. Or search for the (invisible) variable (this worked
and replace it with the variable from the clipboard. I do not remember.
As Tammy had already described.

Hi John,

Weird indeed, but what is even weirder is that I encountered this problem
myself a couple of months ago when I was using ePub to convert my FM source to
HTML5. It was one flippin' variable out of many that I had in the source files
and it also involved conditional text. I know this is really, really pulling at
straws, but a couple of plug-ins that I was using and therefore, affecting the
Framemaker FDK, appeared to be the issue. (It was a head-banging,
feet-stomping, gut-wailing investigation), but this was what appeared to work:

The solution is to open each FM document that is generating with missing
variables and do the following:
- From the 'Show/Hide Conditional Text' tab, select the 'Show All' radio button
(make sure to have the show condition indicators selected) and then select
'Apply'.
- confirm that the conditional text settings are as expected and where there
are problems fix.
- From the 'Show/Hide Conditional Text' tab, select the 'Show As Per
Condition" radio button (make sure to have the show condition indicators
deselected), set the conditions accordingly, and then select 'Apply'. Do this
for both conditons.
- Save the FrameMaker file.

All my FrameMaker files were stable after that.

And short of assuming that I somehow had pleased the previously pissed-off
FrameMaker gods, I have no other explanation as to why this worked (I had my
rationale for it at the time), but it did.

I feel your pain.

Subject: [Framers] weird bug - Variable at start of paragraph sometimes vanishes

I've never seen this before; it looks like a bug.
FM2015, unstructured.
I have a big book with many variables and some conditions. In many (but not
all) cases, a variable that starts a paragraph is present but invisible.
Specifically,
*Note: AGM only.*
AGM is the variable. In some places I see *Note AGM only.* and in many places I
see *Note only.* The latter still have the variable marker in place and
selectable, and when I select it, the invisible marker is still assigned to the
variable with the value AGM.
If I replace the variable, then it appears and it seems to stay, but I don't
know why it vanished in the first place, how to reproduce it, or how to make it
never happen again.
A clue: The doc originally had many many AGM only notes as text. Then we
started rebranding the product while keeping our own name as well, publishing
"blue" and "orange" versions of the doc. For the orange version, the variable =
AGM, and for the blue doc it's IVGM. To set the variable throughout the doc, I
replaced the text AGM with the variable, then copied the variable and did a
Find/Replace By Pasting (not a text Find/Replace).
That got the variable into place everywhere. I am not sure that's a factor,
because I think there are too many notes that still show the variable to
account for them all having been manual operations (and thus the bu came from
the automated F/R step).
Has anyone seen this?
Is there any solution other than manually replacing each invisible variable?

Re: [Framers] "Editing" a PDF in Adobe Reader DC

2019-10-25 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Tammy,

When you already have Acrobat DC, then I would install
Acrobat Reader only in a virtual machine for testing.

When your SMEs add comments in the PDF and want to
print, they have to remember to select "Document and Markups"
in the Print dialog. Otherwise the comments do not get printed.

Best regards

Subject: [Framers] "Editing" a PDF in Adobe Reader DC

Hi All,

I know that the standard Edit functions are not available, but you can use the
Comment tool to draw on, use text, etc. right? I need to produce PDFs for my
client's SMEs for editing and they do not have Adobe Acrobat DC and obviously
do not want to pay for the tool just to edit. I would ordinarily do a free
download and confirm, but I have Adobe Acrobat Pro/DC installed on every one of
my systems and I whole-heartedly remember Dov's warning against having the full
suite and Reader installed on the same system - i.e., DON'T!

Thanks!

Re: [Framers] Auto-assign color to change bars

Hi Lin,

The Change Bar properties are in Format | Document |
Change Bars. The properties are part of the Page Layout.
Therefore you can make these properties part of your template
and import the Page Layout with the Change Bar Properties
into other files.
Does this help or do you already know all this?

I must not have been clear.

I know you can reset the color using Change Bar Properties. The annoyance is
you can only do it on a file-by-file or a book-by-book basis.

I don't want to have to go into Change Bar Properties to do this. I want it to
be part of the default preferences I can set for FrameMaker, so that when I
turn the automatic change bar property on, I don't also have to set the color
and position, it is already set the way I want. In other words, I want to be
able to go into something like the Preferences screen and say, make my change
bars red anytime I have them on.

As I said, kinda petty, but I figure if they can automatically set it to
default to Black, there's no reason the default color can't be set to some
other color, right?

Oddly, I appear to have given the same response Monique gave back in February
to someone in the Adobe Forums who wanted to do something similar.
:D Funny how things come around, innit?

Re: [Framers] Grammar/Cross References

2019-06-27 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Alison,

See section 1.2 f. means that the content is not only in section
1.2, but also in 1.3.
See section 1.2 ff. means that the content is in section 1.2 and
the following sections.
(Similar to f for forte and ff for fortissimo in music.)
There isn't a German word "fortfolgend". That's a common misunderstanding.
I do not see this abbreviation often. Mostly it is used with pages,
but not sections.

You might just add "and the following sections".

I know this is off topic, but my internet searches have proven fruitless.

I am in the middle of (legally) re-branding an English, white label manual
(originally written in German) to ship with a product manufactured by another
company.

My problem is with some of the cross references as many of them are followed by
the abbreviation "ff". (eg, " See Section 11.3 ff. ")

According to a German engineer currently in training here, "f" means "folgende"
(following) and "ff" is "fort folgende" (continue following).

Is anyone familiar with this format? And is there an equivalent in English? My
first guess is that any equivalent would actually be a Latin abbreviation
rather than English—but I've come up blank on both.

All suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Re: [Framers] HTML5: FrameMaker creates only about 10 % of all graphics

2019-05-07 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Art,

Here is the info which Amitoj Singh sent me:
Basically this new flag enables the new GDI based image creation
for HTML5. Earlier we were using a different technology for the same
which made it slow but with this flag enabled we use the new workflow
for HTML5/Save as XML image generation.

He also said that the quality of the graphics conversion
is the same as before.
Therefore you can safely set this option in your conversion
projects to avoid any issues.

Hi,

All other graphics are converted to white rectangles.

The file names are correct; the graphics are pure white.
There is no difference between the original graphics. All were created in the

In the Image settings the default format is JPG. (PNG is worse.) Reference page

Apart from this no changes to the default, no margins, no borders, no scaling.

I already copied eveything to a local drive, restarted FrameMaker, restarted

When I do not restart FrameMaker I get only white rectangles.
When I restart FrameMaker and start the conversion, then the white rectangles
always start with the same topic.
On the network everything takes longer, but the white graphics start on the

Betreff: Re: [Framers] [FrameMaker 2019] Customizing responsive HTML5 output:
best practices and good documentation?

Hi Yves,

I also started to convert my unstructured documentation to HTML5.
And I do not have any tutorials or best practices. I am still experimenting.
I will look for more information in the online help and in the various forums
and blogs.
My first impressions and questions:

o Default settings are good.

o I do not know which font will be used. Probably my font will be replaced
by something else. However, I do not know, which fonts are on Android
or iOS. Is there are default replacement?

o Graphics conversion with SVG is best. However, if you have
some other objects in the same anchored frame, then you should
convert to raster images. I find the results much better than I expected.

o When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then
you have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph.
  See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920

o I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title.
E.g. when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then
the whole anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic
  title.

o Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want
to search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between
two words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution.

o Of course I had written documents with a certain layout. I have to find
solutions for some of my paragraph layouts (e.g. right-aligned tab stops).

o I adapt a copy of the regular settings file on our network. I do not know,
if there is a standard solution, where this settings file should reside.

Best regards

Winfried

Re: [Framers] Formatting source code snippets

2019-04-09 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Peter,

When I have to document our API like software, I have several tab stops
set in the paragraph designer.
Then I just enter as many tabs in the text to have the wanted indentation.
This way I can more easily copy and paste code samples.
Yes, and I also have a monospaced font (Courier, but e.g. Microsoft
Consolas is equally good).

That's just my approach. Others might have better procedures.

Subject: [Framers] Formatting source code snippets

Hi everyone,

I have seen variations of this topic in the archives dating from 2007. I was
wondering what strategies FrameMaker 2019 users employ to reproduce code
snippets in API reference guides and the like. I used to format each
indentation with a different style and also used to just copy and paste into a
monotype style to preserve the formatting without having to re-create it in
Frame. Any suggestions or better work methods are much appreciated.

Best,

Re: [Framers] PDFs and FM 2019

2019-03-29 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi Dan,

I also have FM 2019 64 bit and could not install SetPrint.
However, I think it's not needed any longer (only, if you
want to print to a file).
If you create a PDF via Save As PDF or via the Publish pod
(with Use Acrobat Distiller for PDF generation activated),
the PDF is created correctly. I do not notice any difference,
when the printer is set to a physical printer or to Adobe PDF.

When you create the PDF without Distiller, then you do not
need SetPrint anyway.

I also have some issues when FrameMaker creates the PDF.
I hope that this gets fixed soon!

Best regards

Winfried

1. Sundorne's Setprint no longer appears to work, presumably because it was a
32-bit application and is incompatible with 64-bit FM. Is there a 64-bit
version of that utility or some other method to always set the printer to Adobe
PDF whenever opening a document? The error I receive is as follows:

2. More of an FYI than an issue: By default, FrameMaker 2019 is configured to
NOT use Acrobat Distiller to create PDFs... why I have no idea. When I used the
default config, my PDFs had all sorts of missing elements throughout the
document... placed graphics, running feet, you name it. It was only when I
checked the box to use Distiller that I got fully intact PDFs.

Re: [Framers] HTML5: table titles have no font information when there are several paragraphs

2019-03-22 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

Markus Wiedenmaier from the German frameuser.de mailing list said
that several paragraphs in a table title are not allowed in HTML.
That's why FrameMaker concatenates all paragraphs in the table title.

He suggested to apply a character format with all set to As Is to all paragraphs
in the table title besides the last one. With the export to HTML a section in
the CSS is added:
span.FM_dummy {
}
Change this to:
span.FM_dummy {
white-space: pre-line;
}
span.FM_dummy:after {
content:" \A ";
}
This adds a line break after each paragraph.

In the HTML file the paragraph without font info is .
In the CSS add this to the regular table title definition so that this
paragraph
is formatted as the working table title paragraphs (those from tables with only
a single paragraph):
Old:
caption.FM_figuretitle {...}
New:
caption.FM_figuretitle, caption.caption {...}

Hi,

I want to start the export to HTML5. When I use the default export settings
(and some tweaks), the export looks very good in my browser and on my
smartphone.

However, one thing does not work. When there are several paragraphs in a table
title, all paragraphs are concatenated. In the HTML file the text of all
paragraphs is just in a single paragraph.
Additionally the paragraph does not have any font information. Which means
Times or something like this. In the HTML file there is a format which is not
listed in the CSS file (class="caption").
With a single paragraph everything is fine.

Is there anything which I can do about this? What can I do that the export
maintains the separate paragraphs?

Re: [Framers] Now it's a buggy SVG IMPORT into Frame 2019 files

2019-03-19 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi,

I have the same problem with SVG exported from
Corel Designer. Parts of the graphics get shifted or stacked.
When I ungrouped everything prior to the export, the SVG
is still distorted in FrameMaker. Pitty that this does not work.

The only work-around which I know is:
In Corel Designer select everything and convert only the selected content to
PDF.
In InkScape open the PDF, crop the page to the imported content (with 1 mm
offset)
and export to SVG.
Not good for 700 graphics files in my installation instructions ...

I've a new update, in case anyone is still curious about this. I've added the
information to Tracker, also.

I had been trained to group all the objects in Visio before saving out to SVG,
and that was the process I was using back in October, probably because it was
the only way to save just the graphics without including the whole page they
were on. When we switched to using PDF format as a workaround, though, we had
to shrink the page to fit the image, and today it occurred to me to see what
would happen if I did NOT group the objects before saving out to SVG.

Lo and behold, the issue is fixed. None of the lines or text additions to
screenshots or photographs are moved when I import the SVG into Frame as long
as the objects in the Visio file aren't grouped. How weird is that?

Whoops. Sorry, yes, you do. This information is from the fm_bookmifwash.c file.
I don't know why Adobe hasn't provided a readme for this.

2. Open maker.ini file in the FrameMaker 10 directory. Add the following lines
to the [APIClients] section of the maker.ini file:
* MIFwash=Standard, MIF Wash, fminit\BookComponentMIFWash.dll, all

The tool is available under Book Utilities when the book is in focus.

If you're talking about the BookMIFWash dll (BookComponentMIFWash.dll) that
Adobe supplies as a sample of how to create plugins, an updated version is
included with Frame 2019. You need to copy it from

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2019\fminit

RE: Off topic: Helping translators with localised screen shots

2009-04-24 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi Verner,

I take also the screenshots in other languages. Translators
could not deal with our software, and if I had to explain
how they could open a specific window, I rather do it myself.
I have a multilingual Windows, so that all buttons (also
buttons like Cancel) will have the correct language.

I do not scale any screenshot in a picture editor. And I also
do not have screenshots of parts of windows. Thus windows in
other languages have the same size. Screenshots are only
scaled in FrameMaker. If I exchange the screenshot of a
language with that of another language in another size,
no rescaling is needed. I use EPS for the import in FrameMaker.

I know that some people request scaling in a picture editor
as part of their workflow. In my oppinion this is a waste
of time. The scaling is done in the Distiller.

Best regards

Winfried

My English manual with 300+ screen shots is now going to be
 updated and
then translated into 6 languages. The screen shots are to be
 localized.
 I use SnagIt 7.2.3.

I plan to give them my English manual with the English screen shots as

 localised ones.

I realize that I may help the translators in different ways,
 so that it
is easier for them to get the screen shots into Framemaker without
 having to rescale them.

Maybe I should have 2 or 3 standard. dpi settings for
 imported graphics?
 Which ones do you suggest?
For some screens I have minimized the application window before I take
the screen shot in order to display all screen texts in a readable way
 in Framemaker.

What are your guidelines for translators who are to take screen shots?
What are you guidelines for importing screen shots into Framemaker?

Off topic: Helping translators with localised screen shots

Winfried

RE: Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi Steve,

You could also create an anchored frame with the width of
your text frame and insert a new text frame. Then change the
text frame's properties to 2 or more columns and activate
Balance Columns.

You still have to adjust the height of the 2 frames
manually, but you do not need to distribute the content
manually between the 2 columns of a table. You also do
not need to change your table column format or create
a new one.

However, I would recomment to use a dedicated empty anchor
paragraph for the anchored frame. Deselect Line Spacing - Fixed
of this paragraph format. Select the anchored frame and press
ESC m p to adjust its size to that of the text frame.

Best regards

RE: FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

2009-04-01 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

One plus about FM9 -- the User Guide actually has a long chapter
devoted to keyboard shortcuts for navigation, menu choices, equation
editor, and so on. Such documentation was woefully lacking
 in previous
 versions.

At least the comment regarding missing documentation
in previous versions is not true. In the FrameMaker 8
online help shortcuts are described at the very end in
Appendix B: Keyboard Shortcuts.

Hi Avi,

Did you make sure that you selected Generate Acrobat Data

I do not know how you create your PDF files. As a test
print to a PS file (with Adobe PDF as printer and Generate

 Hi all,
Something seems to have gone wrong with my FM 8 installation.

FM 8 is no longer generating PDFs with bookmarks for the Acrobat (v9)
 Bookmarks pane.

I recall the problem started when I was using FM 7.2 on a
 different PC, but
had to uninstall Acrobat v9 due to a licensing issue, and then instead
installed Acrobat 5, which I own. The problems then started
 on that PC. And
when I copied the book to the current PC (with FM 8 + Acrobat
 9) then the
whole installation stopped creating bookmarks, whichever book
 I was using.

 Thanks,

RE: Fm 8 - Track Changes - problems!

2009-02-05 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

If an anchor or a mark, which is adjacent to text with a track
changes condition, is hidden, I assume the following:
o You wanted to delete the text.
o In order to delete the text, you either double-clicked the
word or you selected it with CTRL+SHIFT+Right arrow.
With both methods the anchor or mark gets selected as well.
o Then you deleted the text with the anchor/mark.
o The text and the anchor/mark get the condition FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_DELETED.
You see this in the status bar.
o When you hide the condition (via Preview Final), this
text and the anchor/mark are hidden.

What I'd do:
o Either make sure that you do not delete anchors or marks.
o Or, if the anchor/mark has the condition FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_DELETED,
select it, and then click on Accept Edit. That removes this
  condition.

In any case, deleting text does not apply the condition
FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_DELETED to adjacent anchors or marks,
if they weren't selected.

The Track Changes conditions cannot be applied or shown/hidden
via the conditional text dialogs.

Best regards

Winfried

The Track Changes feature uses, I assume,
conditional formats to color text and manage changes (refuse, accept).

Problem: This feature seems to result in an
 unknown (un-named) conditional format affecting
neighboring anchor symbols. So when I specify
that only conditional format CF1 be shown, the
polluted anchored frames that are supposed to
have NO conditional format do not show, giving
unresolved x-refs (see Fig. 3.1 but no anchored frame!!).

I have found such situations in my current
documents. Now if I try and use the normal dialog
box to unconditionalize a selection of text
containing the anchored frame symbol...nothing happens.

Solution: I have to (1) move the anchored frame
symbol elsewhere to a paragraph without any track
changes, and (2) delete the still conditionalized
text manually and re-enter that text and recreate any affected x-refs.

 Took time to find/understand (?)/solve! And I
don't have all that much hair left (will soon move to fingernails)!!

Any one else have this problem? Any better solutions or tips?

 Thanks!!

P.S. I have the latest FM patch. XP with latest patch.

Frame 9: improved CMYK

2009-01-28 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

Here is another post from Arnis Gubins from the Adobe FrameMaker
forum:

... After extensive testing with his files and others, using
imported PDFs with the new CMYK SaveAsPDF is broken from the get go.

When using imported PDFs in FM, the CMYK SaveAsPDF option renders
these imported PDFs as low-res RGB TIFFs on output. Yuck! A major
foobar in the latest point version of this release.

HOWEVER, using EPS files works just fine! So converting the PDFs to
EPS before import is a workaround for now.

 Mike,
There are a couple of threads about CMYK support on the Adobe
 User Forum for
 Frame.
According to one of the moderators there (Arnis, who I'm not
 sure is on this
list), who has played with this a bit:

Yes, CMYK (and spot colours too) works when doing the Save As PDF
(Adobe somehow manages to slip in a different postscript header that
isn't available when you manually print to the Adobe PDF printer
instance). The Save As PDF works very well when everything is
 configured correctly.

So the trick seems to be electing the SaveAs option rather
 than Printing,
which is the default for many of us.
I would have done it the other way around, but ...

2009-01-23 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

In Germany law requests documentation to install and use
the product and to avoid any dangers. All court judgements
still regard only paper documentation as proper documentation.
However, at least for products which are used together with
a PC this seems to change _slowly_.

I do not think that Germans regard paper documentation as
bad, non-green etc. Think of your parents. Would they
prefer PDF? I guess, all depends on product, audience and
circumstances.

Best regards

Well, for what it's worth, my German service engineer said that in
Germany, his customers prefer PDFs to printed books, for all the usual
reasons, PLUS they strongly feel that paper manuals are a sign of a
company that does not think green.
Whether they are right or wrong is immaterial; we probably won't be
sending printed docs to German customers unless they ask for them.

RE: FM8 seems to be sluggish on my PC

2009-01-20 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

I often have lots of dialog boxes open (e.g. paragraph/
character designer, marker window), and I do not notice
anything special. Specifically jumping around with the
insertion mark or selecting text is fast.

I have FM 8.0p277, 1 GB RAM, Windows 2000 Professional.

Therefore I do not think that dialog boxes in general
cause problems.

The designer boxes may have caused the problem, but you're
 going to run into
more problems with only 1G of RAM. That's a very minimal

more is recommended if you work with long documents or want

RE: How do you create a new paragraph after a table?

2009-01-20 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

When you set manual page breaks via Special | Page Break,
you can decide, whether you want to remove them with a format
import. There is a check box While Updating, Remove Manual
Page Breaks.

  Thanks for the responses.

You could choose Special Page Break. The problem with
 that method is
that FrameMaker removes the page break anytime you
 remove overrides.

What?! Really?! In Word this is style independent and is a
 hard break , as
real as typing avi or any ASCII character(s).

That's because Word inserts a control character that *is* the
 page break.
FrameMaker does not. You force FrameMaker to break the page either by
specifying the start location for the paragraph that follows
 the break (to
top of page or top of column), or by specifying a large
 enough space
below pgf for the preceding paragraph so that the next
 paragraph cannot
possibly occur on the same page. In either case, unless you create a
dedicated style (e.g. H2_newpage or Body_breakafter), the formatting
that forces the break is a format override. And if you follow
 the common
beneficial practice of periodically eliminating overrides by
 re-importing the
template's formats into your document, you will eliminate those page
breaks when you do the import.

No way of making a permanent page break?

The way of making a persistent (noting is ever truly
 permanent...) page
break is to define one or more paragraph formats that are
 specifically
defined to produce a page break. But as others have noted,
 it's generally
a bad idea to use persistent page breaks because they are
 very likely to
become inappropriate as the text expands and contracts due to editing
and revision of the document. The approach that entails the
 least work
to maintain is to ignore page breaks until you are preparing for final
publication, and to strip out all the manual breaks as the
 first step before
you start making revisions for the next edition of the document.

And if I make a Heading style that starts at the start of a
 page, I will
have to make a variant like that for H2, H3, H4 and H5.

Also note that you'd need to remember to include *both* variants of
each heading in the include list when you set up your TOC.
 Otherwise,
you'd only get the headings that don't start a new page.

The other approach is to control the break from the preceding page by
using a non-content paragraph that has its space below pgf
 formatting
set to the vertical dimension of your main flow text frame. When you
insert that paragraph, it will inevitably force the next paragraph to
the top of a new page. And because it is a single-purpose paragraph
that you never use to hold content, you can globally delete them to
get rid of all your manual page breaks before starting a new
 version of
 the document.

It galls me to admit this, but I really appreciate the ability to see
all the hidden markers in a Word file. It enables me to see all the
Index markers, for example, and quickly correct inconsistencies.

Is there any clever way of doing this in Frame? Or in a MIF file?

For example, I think a chapter of my book is skimpy on markers. I can
generate a List of Markers and look at the page numbers; then
 I can go
to the document and look at the pages that don't have any
 markers to see
 if they should.

How delightful it would be to simply page through the
 document, noting
the absence of markers once all markers (or, better yet, just Index
 markers) had been displayed?

Has anyone made my daydream a reality?

Boolean condition expression problems in FM 8

2007-10-18 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

We have a comment condition which should be hidden in the
final document and other conditions which should be shown.
However, here I ran into problems, when I have text which
has comment and another condition applied, and text with
comment should be hidden. I tried this:

o draftORprintORnursecallORNOTcomment - Text which
has nursecall and comment assigned is shown.

o nurse callANDNOTcommentORdraftORprint - Text which
has nursecall and comment assigned is hidden. That's
exactly what I want and it works. Very good. However I cannot
explain why. Obviously the order is important. But I do not
  want to try all possibilities.
In my oppinion I would need the option to group the single
elements in this expression. But that's not allowed.

And other condition issues:

o I have to close all condition windows when I want to do
something else. I cannot leave them open as before.

o When I select Show All and Set and then again an expression
  my latest expression got lost.

o The FM documentation is not correct when it says: 5. Click
the AND, OR, or NOT button.
When I need NOT the result must be ANDNOT or ORNOT.
  I miss examples.

And another minor annoyance: When in FM e.g. the paragraph
designer was active and I switch to another application and go
back to FM, FM 8 displays now only the paragraph designer. The
whole FM window should be shown.

Best regards

Winfried

RE: Boolean condition expression problems in FM 8

2007-10-18 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

Sorry, 2 more issues:

o I noticed that boolean expressions set in one file of a book
are not overridden when I set Show All for the whole book.
In this file still Show as per Expression is set.

o When I want to set boolean expressions for the whole book, not
all available conditions are shown in the boolean expression
  window.
In the Show/Hide Conditional Text all conditions are shown
  correctly.

Best regards

Winfried

 Winfried

Boolean condition expression problems in FM 8

2007-10-18 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

Sorry, 2 more issues:

o I noticed that boolean expressions set in one file of a book
are not overridden when I set "Show All" for the whole book.
In this file still "Show as per Expression" is set.

o When I want to set boolean expressions for the whole book, not
all available conditions are shown in the boolean expression
  window.
In the "Show/Hide Conditional Text" all conditions are shown
  correctly.

Best regards

Winfried

Know bugs in FM 8?

2007-09-17 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I also heard of these bugs in FrameMaker 8:
 - ESC+TAB does not insert TAB when cursor in table cell,
but the pound sign (#) is inserted
 - Opening an old file (FM version 8) with missing pictures does
not allow to set Ignore all missing files or Skip this file.
Only CANCEL is possible or searching for the file to provide new
   path.
 - Overlay graphics on top of imported graphics do not disappear
after deletion. Even screen refresh does not clear the image.
A re-import of the graphic is necessary

These bugs weren't mentioned on this list (or I didn't notice it).
Can anyone confirm this list? Specifically the second one (missing
graphics) would cause problems for us.

Best regards

 Hi,

On the FrameUser.com web-site there is supposed to be
a white pager which explains how to switch bleeding
thumb tabs automatically. There should also be a
FrameScript script. However, I cannot access neither
of them. The web-site opens completely different pages.

Does anyone have this white paper and the script and
 could send it to me?

 Thank you very much

RE: Conditional Text Question

2007-07-10 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Sam,

When you apply a condition to a table row, the cells in this
row get a thick coloured border. That's intended behaviour.
When you hide the condition indicators, this border disappears.
Is this what you want to achieve?

Apart from that you can also delete a condition and also the
text and table rows, the condition was applied to.

Best regards

Winfried

 Subject: Conditional Text Question

 Hello All,

I have a document that uses conditional text to delineate
 between two
different versions of the same basic product. Before I started this,
there were two separate books for each manual, even though there is a
LOT of cross-over text between them that is the same. I combined them
into a single set of master files and am marking the conditional text,
hiding what I don't want to see, and saving the resulting file for the
two separate books. Now, I have three files for each chapter of the
book: Master, Version 1, and Version 2. All well and good. However, I
also have ALL of the text in all three files, albeit Version
 1's text is
hidden in Version 2, and vice-versa. Is there a way to permanently
remove the text for Version 1 from Version 2, and vice-versa, while
maintaining the master file? One of the reasons I need to do
 this is to
remove the borders around cells in a table that are conditionalized.
Currently, there are large colored borders around any table cells that
 are marked as conditional.

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.2b144.

Thanks much in advance!

FrameMaker in Hebrew

2007-07-09 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Dov,

I don't know whether it is allowed to tell that.
FrameMaker 8 was said to support Unicode. Will it
also support right-to-left languages?

RE: Can't Change Paragraph Tag

2007-06-20 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Steve,

I don't know when this flag gets set. In the MIF documentation
it mentions text insets. Eventually there was a text inset
before/after this paragraph which was deleted and the paragraph
retained its flag.

I had the same problem some time ago and noticed this flag in
the MIF file. Deleting it fixed the problem.

Best regards

 which I am very grateful:

Check in the MIF file whether this H1 paragraph at the end
of the chapter has a property PgfLocked Yes. Set this to No,
save the MIF file, reopen and see, whether you can change the
 paragraph format.

Heavy. I retract my remark about MIF manipulation.

As a matter of interest, how does this flag get set? Is there
a control in FrameMaker to lock a paragraph like this, or can
in only be done in the MIF? What is its purpose?
