Re: Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
If you don't have the book file open, FrameMaker creates PDF links to the PDF files named after the file (that is, it creates links to file_name.pdf rather than to book_name.pdf). This makes sense. After all, FrameMaker has no way of knowing which book the file belongs to if the book is not open. I'm not sure what happens if you have two different books open that reference the same file. On 7/10/07, Art Campbell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, since no one else has responded... yes, for the links to work, you do need to have all the destination files open when you build the book PDF. Text spacing problem
When my co-worker views Reference page #1, all of the line titles (Footnote, TableFootnote, Single Line, Double Line, etc.) are crunched together. It looks a little like the effect you get when you set the Spread to -24 percent. However, the spread on the format in question is set to 0. In fact, both the paragraph format and the character format involved are set properly...there are no overrides. She and I are both using FM v7.2p158 unStructured. I can open the same document and it looks fine but it looks crunched on hers. Also, when she types text inside a table, the text tends to not wrap to the next line when it should. Instead the text on that line crunches together tighter and tighter. Eventually the text will wrap to the next line, but it's all crunched together. Convert PDF to DOC or FM

Isn't this the sort of thing that Adobe should be testing BEFORE it releases products? This seems like a fairly reasonable thing to expect to work properly. Since I've upgraded to Acrobat, half the time, it won't produce a PDF: FrameMaker has trouble initializing the Distiller, causing my entire screen to go blank. Cross references not converting to PDF hyperlinks
Hi- I have a document that I've added a number of cross references to. I've noticed that while the cross references work properly within FrameMaker, clicking the hyperlink in the resulting PDF file does nothing: many hyperlinks are broken. Upon further testing, I think the problem might be that I've changed the destination paragraph tag after I created the cross reference. In other words, when I originally created the cross reference, the paragraph tag was H1. The cross-reference marker text is 12345_H1:MyParaText. I've kept that marker there, but changed the paragraph tag, say to H2. When I eliminated the cross-reference marker and added a new one, such that the marker text is 56789_H2:MyParaText, the hyperlink does work in the resulting PDF file. Is this indeed the source of the problem? Has anyone ever had this problem before? I've had mismatched paragraph tags and marker text before without any problem, so this is surprising. I didn't know if it might be related to the number of cross references. Is there a limit? This is a major problem for me. I've painstakingly added numerous cross references to make my Help system (and PDF files) more usable. Hopefully, WebWorks will still produce the links properly, but I'm not sure that I want to keep these faulty links in the PDF files. However, removing and reinserting markers for the paragraphs that changed tags would be ominous. Worse, I now think that I can never change paragraph tags for a paragraph that contains a cross-reference marker. That would be a nasty limitation, one that makes cross references less useful. I'm using Frame 7.2p158 unstructured and Adobe Acrobat Distiller 8.1.2. Could this possibly be a problem with incompatibilities between Frame 7.xand Distiller 8.x? Thanks for any insights. Cross references without active hyperlinks in PDF files
Hello: Is there a way to define a cross-reference format such that this cross reference does not generate an active hyperlink in a PDF file? I use cross references as a convenient way to reuse content from a single location. I've defined these cross references to show up in black text whereas the cross references that I want people to link to are defined to show up in blue text. I figured that readers will then know that blue text is a hyperlink and only try to click on that text. No one has ever complained -- until yesterday, when an employee noticed the hidden link. Text insets aren't really practical because you can only put one pience of content per file. Variables might be an option since the reused text is relatively short in my case, but variables seem a lot more error-prone to me, as I'd always have to remember to reimport the variable definitions to all the documents in my book, whereas cross references update automatically. If anyone knows a way to create cross references that don't convert to hyperlinks, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Doug p.s. Re: Stripping color definitions from .fm files
Like Niels said, save as MIF, open and save back as FM. Or if you have FrameScript, the ReplaceColors script will remove any unused colors in the doc. You can prevent this problem from arising in the first place by making sure your graphics use a 24- or 32-bit color depth, 16.7 million colors. It has been demonstrated that PNG files using a lower color depth, equipped with a color palette, add their color palette to the FM list of colors. Never use 2-, 8- or 16-bit color depth graphics in a Frame document and you'll be fine. --Doug On 3/21/06, Melanie Raney [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Anybody know an easy and quick way to delete several color definitions from a document at once? ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

Re: Auto-creating tables
Belinda showed me the light. I had been attempting to put a table inside a text frame on a reference pagethis failed to work. She told me to take the extra step of putting said text frame inside a graphic frame. THIS worksthe paragraph style references the graphic frame via the relevant field on the Advanced tab. The only catch is that you can't edit the table or add rows to it. However, this isn't a problem for me since I add rows using tables in text insets. I can't (directly) edit those either but this too is not a problem...I've no need to edit the tables at this point. The table on the reference page contains only a heading row...using this with tables in text insets lets me build a large table with no seams or gaps. The weirdest thing...
When I highlight a single character and apply a character format, the status bar at the bottom of FrameMaker displays the name of the character format. If I unselect this newly formatted character, of course, the character format name no longer displays there. However, if I again highlight the formatted character, moving my mouse pointer from the left to the right, the status bar still doesn't display the format name. You'd think that the paragraph format used by the character had been overridden if you didn't know better. Strange, annoying issues
We insert PNG files by reference as our departmental standard policy; most of our images are set to use 96 DPI or 150 DPI, though a number of them use other values. For a while now I've noticed many of these images no longer display their numerical DPI value in the DPI field when viewing their Object Properties. Instead, the DPI value says Unknown. My question: what can cause this to happen, and what can we do to avoid this? When I change the DPI value from Unknown back to the original value everything works fine..the next time I view the Object Properties the value I set is still there. Another issue that's been bugging me is that while we use a 2.25 line width when we color our anchored frame edges to create a border for our images, many of these I've noticed are set to 3.0 width when I check them. My question: is there something that can make the line width round up to the next even number? Or are fractional line widths unstable? When I reset the width to 2.25 it sticks. Internet explorer glitch
After I upload a file update to my webserver, I like to test the upload by downloading it using Internet Explorer. However, the file I download is always the original version, not the update. FireFox doesn't suffer this problem. If I give the update a different name, even if it's only one letter different, I'm able to download the update. But if the name is the same then the earlier version is what gets downloaded. Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
Yes, that's what it would do. If you create the file-specific PDF file, any newlink markers defined in FM should be defined in the PDF file. You have to be careful about your files' directories when you do this. If your files are in separate directories, the links will expect the PDF files to be in separate directories, too -- directories that mimic your source directory structure. This probably isn't what you want. To get around all this, I generally create a production-specific directory, and create production-specific books (which can reference the working files). Then, you simply open up all those books, and create the PDF files.
Any ideas on how to fix this? --Doug

You guessed right, Lester. I had neglected to set the 2nd file to start on a Left page, despite having planned for this in my mind. I didn't realize that a subsequent chapter in a book could have a "retroactive" effect upon a preceeding chapter. That is, as you said, the first page setting of a chapter overrides the final page setting of the preceeding chapter if the two are in conflict. Thanks, Doug

Automatic deletion of files after saving as PDF?
Isn't this the sort of thing that Adobe should be testing BEFORE it releases products? This seems like a fairly reasonable thing to expect to work properly. Instead, I'll have to upgrade to have basic functionality. Since I've upgraded to Acrobat, half the time, it won't produce a PDF: FrameMaker has trouble initializing the Distiller, causing my entire screen to go blank. Then, I have to launch Distiller manually, to distill the .tps file that Frame created. I'd really expect more from a big company that has the resources that Adobe has. Am I being unreasonable? Table rules randomly dark in pdfs
In my experience the true test is whether the rules print normally...Acrobat has a reputation for not being able to draw lines well. Convert PDF to DOC or FM
Hiya folks, I have a PDF file that I want to edit using either FrameMaker or Word. However, when I use Acrobat 7 to save it as either DOC or RTF, the only thing that gets saved are the headings. At first I thought it was the bookmarks that were being saved, but the same thing happened after I deleted the bookmarks and then resaved it. Any ideas on what's going on, or why this is happening? No security has been implemented in the PDF. I can save the file as PS or EPS and it seems large enough to be the full document, not just the six or so pages of bookmarks/headings, but I don't know how to convert PS or EPS to FM or DOC. Ideas? Thanks! --Doug
No one has ever complained -- until yesterday, when an employee noticed the "hidden" link. Thanks. Doug p.s. I'm using unstructured FrameMaker, version 7.2.
The cross-reference marker text is "12345_H1:MyParaText." I've kept that marker there, but changed the paragraph tag, say to H2. When I eliminated the cross-reference marker and added a new one, such that the marker text is "56789_H2:MyParaText," the hyperlink does work in the resulting PDF file. Doug
Cross references not converting to PDF hyperlinks
Thanks to Rebecca Officer and Fred Ridder for pointing me to the solution: On the Links tab of the PDF Setup dialog box, select the "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" check box. This increases my PDF file size by 27 percent, but now all the PDF links work. Disappearing Paragraph Tags from status bar
Usually, a document's status bar shows the Flow and the Paragraph Tag in the lower left corner. More frequently, I'm noticing that the status bar will stop showing this information and instead shows ParaID and no other information. The only way I seem to be able to get the normal status bar information to appear is to close the document and reopen it. This is extremely annoying. Can anyone tell me what causes this to happen or some better way to get it to revert to normal behavior? Thanks. Doug

Disappearing Paragraph Tags from status bar
Both DLLs were in the listed directory, I've deleted them and restarted FrameMaker. The Mif2Go commands are gone. Extra colours introduced by PNGs
PNG files add colors to the FM file only if they use less than 16 million colors. You won't see this problem if you make sure your PNGs use a 16 million color depth. You can fix any FM document that suffers from this by either of the following methods: 1) Save the FM as MIF, then open the MIF and save it as FM. or 2) Use the Replace Colors script with FrameScript. --Doug

how to change the papercolor in FM
What's your intent in changing the paper color? If you just want something other than white on your screen, you can modify the Windows Desktop settings to make the paper color be anything you like. Personally, I have mine set to be off-white. This helps me spot text boxes that I need to replace with imported images. The text boxes display in the same off-white as the rest of the page; the images display white even though they are otherwise identical with the text box content. --Doug
Strangely, if you move the cursor from right-to-left when you highlight the formatted character, instead of from left-to-right, the name of the character format DOES display on the status bar. I'm running version 7.0p579 on Windows XP. Does this happen for anyone else? --Doug

Sorting tables
The Sort command in my Table dropdown menu is grayed out. No matter what I do I can't make it available for use. Is there something simple that I'm forgetting, or do I need to reinstall Frame? I use Frame 7.0p578 on Win2K. Thanks, Doug

Replace Formats script?
Is there a Replace Formats script for FrameScript that works basically like the Word Find/Replace function? I'm trying to replace Bullet format with Bullet 1 format, but the Find/Change function finds existing instances of Bullet 1, Bullet 2, and Bullet 3, in addition to instances of Bullet. POLL: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics?

Of course, IMO the ultimate redefinition solution is to redefine the shortcuts so they apply character and/or paragraph formats. What could be simpler than redefining CTRL+B to apply a bold character format? This could benefit both novice and experienced writers alike. I'm surprised this functionality isn't built into Frame, or at least into Framescript (I haven't delved into the latter deeply enough to discover it, if FS does indeed possess this functionality). --Doug

Of course, the kind of person who uses CTRL+B to get the bold characteristic onto text doesn't care about metadata, so it all depends on your audience. This solution would be good enough for them, though it might not be for others. And there's always an underlying reason to apply bolding or italics...some people don't care whether that reason is made obvious in the way that metadata makes it. Moreover, it would be simple to use scripts to assign your entire format catalog to keyboard shortcuts. --Doug > > My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. > Fred Ridder (fred dot ridder at intel dot com) > Intel > Parsippany, NJ > > > > -Original Message- > From: framers-bounces+fred.ridder=intel.com at lists.frameusers.com > [mailto:framers-bounces+fred.ridder=intel.com at lists.frameusers.com] On > Behalf Of Doug > Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 2:57 PM > To: framers at lists.frameusers.com > Subject: Re: POLL: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics? > > > I've redefined over 60 shortcuts so they open a catalog instead > > of creating an override. > > Of course, IMO the ultimate redefinition solution is to redefine the > shortcuts so they apply character and/or paragraph formats. Two Frame Issues
When I click the Format menu option in FrameMaker, the Font, Size, and Style options are available. Obviously this can lead to applying format overrides. I believe someone has created a plug-in that will disable and/or remove these options...can someone remind me what the name of it is? Also, sometimes when I use Notepad to edit my Maker.ini file, it becomes corrupted. The EOL markers seem to vanish, the whole thing becomes a jumble, and Frame doesn't work properly until I restore an uncorrupted version of the file. What's up with this/ Thanks, Doug

Thanks for the link. It lead me to figuring out how to fix it without hacking the Registry. Namely: 1) Click Start > Search > For Files or Folders... 2) Click the Indexing Service hyperlink in the left pane. 3) Click the Advanced button on the newly-displayed Indexing Service Settings dialog. 4) Click Action > Properties on the newly-displayed Indexing Service window. 5) Mark the "Index files with unknown extensions" checkbox and click OK. Formatting cross-references
Is there a way to apply a character format to the text of a cross-reference? I've created a cross-reference to a specific heading paragraph format, but part of each of these headings has a character format applied. Displaying a directory
When I click File > Import > File, Frame displays the directory using List mode. I would prefer it default to Details mode. Word doesn't display anything in List mode when I click File > Open, so I'm fairly sure this isn't an operating system (XP) issue. Is there some tweak I can make, perhaps in the Maker.ini, to make Frame default to displaying in Details mode? Thanks, Doug
Formatting Cross References
I'm replacing my CTOCs with sets of cross-references...in some cases the heading is long so that the cross reference, even though it uses a format with a small font size, forces the page number to wrap to the beginning of the next line. Of course I need the page number to be at the ned of any given line, whether it wraps or not. Is there a way I can add a manual line break to the XRef so that enough of the text wraps to the next line to require the automatic leader and move the page number to the right margin? Thanks, Doug

Color problem
If you have FrameScript, the ReplaceColors script will also let you delete all unused colors, including those stubborn colors that can't otherwise be deleted (w'out saving as MIF). Also, if you use PNG graphics, make sure they use a 24 bit color depth before you import them. --Doug

Displaying heading text in a book
I use Frame 7.0p579 on WinXP. The index of my book uses a 2-column body text frame labeled A. The index heading sports an overhead line, and since we want this to span the width of the page, we have placed the heading in a separate text frame, tagged IX. The problem is that in the book, when I toggle it to Display Heading Text, the index displays the capital letter A and not the word Index from the heading. Both text frames, A and IX, feature the Autoconnect checkbox checked. If I clear the checkbox from the A text frame and save the file, the entry in the book file changes from A to the filename.fm, even though the rest of the books shows heading text and not filenames. My question is: what logic does Frame use to decide which text to display in the book when the Display Heading Text mode is selected? In blank empty test books I've tried, it takes the first text entered in the A text frame. I've tried swapping name tags of the two text frames but this doesn't help. --Doug
