Re: [Frameworks] Seeking Projector Manual (Eiki EX-2000A)

2017-09-19 Thread 40 Frames
Hi Steve,

Someone on this list can likely help.
http://www.16mmdirectory.org/projectors/eiki?country=US

I've not talked to Richard for some time, but I know he ended up with a lot
of parts and manuals (directly) from Eiki USA. Last name is Patchett,
listed under RC's Classic Collection. Optech and other vendors on the list
can likely assist as well.

Best,
Alain

Here is a list of Eiki service and repair places, some of whom sell
refurbish. I usually recommend Urbanski, and agree with Scott that Cardinal
is a good
shop, though I'd be surprised if they have any small, portable projectors
or would be willing to service them.

http://www.16mmdirectory.org/projectors/eiki

Eiki SL or SSL are good machines. Not manual, but a good alternative. Just
remember to engage the film loops, then manually advance to make certain
the loops are formed properly and the claw is engaging the film perfs
before switching to the "ON" position.

Most labs can make black leader for you. Try Cinema Arts, Cine Lab,

Re: [Frameworks] making my Eiki lighter

2015-09-23 Thread 40 Frames
Of the SSL parts, the transformer, and the fly wheel are the heaviest.
Don't think
you want to remove those.

Other things you could remove, actually have some function use, so I don't
think
you'd want to remove these either (elevator foot, carry handle). There is a
lot of
plastic and aluminum on that machine, so it's pretty light as is.

Hokushin made a slot load that was slightly smaller and weighs less than
the SSL,
though these are not as easy to find when compared to the SSL.

Re: [Frameworks] Correction: Eiki/Hokushin service recommendations?

2015-08-19 Thread 40 Frames
For Eiki, you might try Urbanski. The following is a list of Eiki service
providers. I've used a few of them,
perhaps others on this listserv can chime in if they feel strongly about
one vendor over another.
http://16mmdirectory.org/projectors/eiki

Hokushin will be tough due to parts availability. Rangertone was the last
service center, and they've been
gone for some time. No idea where those parts ended up. Great projectors,
maybe even a tad better than Eiki
but don't know many people servicing them. You could ask RFS near Montreal.
Super 8 Reversal Lab in The
Hague rents three models of Hokushin xenon and might have a good source for
parts/service. You could also
post your question to the collector's list run by Urbanski -

Earlier Kodak Analyst would dim when slowed, but I think the later model
(II, etc) had better rheostat
and douser so brightness was still decent when film speed was slowed down.

 2. Extachrome with 80,000ft
 3. B/W Negative Reversal (50/50split) with 37,000

I missed this when it was posted, went into my spam folder...

The numbers for B/W are not so great IMO, esp if it's split (approx 18500'

gone down. Of course, I have no proof of decline in sales... and would like

I'm curious to the sales numbers for 16mm color negative for 2013-present,

[Frameworks] Order smaller quantities from Kodak (was Kodak Film Stocks to be Discontinued...)

When talking to kodaks representative I asked about ordering some 7302 for
a class, since we won't be able to know when the back order of 7363 will

4000 ft cans, but will now be made to order, same as 3378, which means
6x4000, or 24000 ft minimum purchase.

I don't know if anyone else is already doing so, but I'm tempted to try to
put some money down, spool those stocks down, then sell them off for what
400' or 100' might have cost. Would people be interested in this, and does
this seem like a viable plan? I feel like there are some labs that might do
this already, but maybe what kodak needs is a middle man?

You might contact Elena Rossi-Snook who is heading up the Film Advocacy
Task Force as part of AMIA's membership.

There are a number of things in Kodak's catalogue (35mm cans 1000',
molecular sieves, etc) that have minimum orders higher
than what I need. FATF/AMIA is working on a purchasing scheme that can
distribute smaller quantities to individuals and organizations.

There might be other groups attempting to do something like this, however
that this happening within AMIA's ranks is a positive thing IMO.

Last time I checked, there was only one place I could find that would do a
direct super 16 negative to 35mm estar print,
without going the IP/IN route, and that was Metropolis. I don't think Metro
is doing traditional optical work anymore.

The price was around $9K.

There is a film recorder called the Piql (used to be the Cinevator) that
allows you to go from DI to 35mm estar print. Of course you have to have a
digital file (DI), which assumes you scanned the negative. The only place I
know of in North American that has one of these is Technicolor, and their
Piql is not set-up to go DI direct to 35mm print.

You could try Janice at Cinema Arts or Dick at Film Technology to see if
they can do a direct blow-up, but the price
will likely be as much as Metropolis if not higher.

I think LIFT has an optical camera for blow-ups? You could fly/drive up to
Toronto and use their camera for the price of
the room plus stock.

Gibbs Chapman in SF had an optical camera from ILM that he was setting up.
You might contact Gibbs and see if he
is providing this service.

Re: [Frameworks] Worth a look for the film-concerned: Tarantino taking over the New Beverly Cinema

2014-09-05 Thread 40 Frames
Let's hope the new 16mm projector that gets installed at the New Beverly is
Bond modded Eastman 25/30/40.

Whether Kinoton is out of the game with the FP-38E or not, I've seen a lot
of inconsistency from one FP-38E
to the next (even in top facilities), and convinced it has design flaws.
The FP-38E dialed can look super bright,
with impeccable edge to edge sharpness, and mostly steady, but not as
steady as the modded Eastmans.

Best projection of 16mm that I've seen was in the larger theater at Gene
Siskel Film Center, the Bijou at CalArts,
and at Harvard Film Archive, all Eastman installs by Bond. The Siskel and
HFA installs are particularly impressive
because the image is so damn tall. I don't know the exact specs, but I'm
guessing close to 20' high for 16mm.

For those not in LA or not familiar with the New Beverly, it's a longtime,

Quentin Tarantino has been the benevolent landlord of the New Bev for
seven years now. He bought the building to save it from being turned into
condos when Sherman Torgan, the New Bev's programmer/operator died. Since
then, Michael Torgan (Sherman's son) has continued to run the New Bev in
the tradition of his dad, as a classic rep house, and Tarantino paid for a
bunch of upgrades to help them out.

Anyway, on the heels of Tarantino being one of the high-profile directors
who essentially made an ultimatum to the studios about continuing to
support 35mm and Kodak, this news (via an interview with Tarantino) showed
 up in the LA Weekly:

 http://www.laweekly.com/publicspectacle/2014/09/05/quentin-tarantino-on-his-new-role-running-the-shows-at-new-beverly-cinema

I thought it'd be relevant here, because although the New Bev hasn't
traditionally shown any experimental work, this is a particularly big
commitment to film-only exhibition (including 16mm) in 2014.

It is a little complicated with Kodak's recent discontinuation of stocks.

I like ORWO, however ORWO stocks -- both UN54 and N74 -- do not run through
one of my cameras without needing
to make adjustments for running color vs. BW. I've had issues with ORWO in
another camera as well. I've had few issues
like this with Kodak BW stocks.

Also, with Kodak, being in education, I get a discount which makes it lower
in cost than ORWO.

I've been shooting a project that uses Double-X (7222), Tri-X (7266)
processed as negative and ORWO's UN54 and N74. When all of these stocks are
printed to 7203 the differences are pretty slight. I don't know what labs
are printing to ORWO's
BW print stocks... though I would be curious to know, since 7203 and 3302
may be put on the chopping block soon.

Ferrania (http://www.filmferrania.it/) might be starting production of
color film stocks, but I have yet to see anything...and
who knows when such a stock will become available in North America.

I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily, I just think that ORWO and
Ferrania will have to prove they have the same level
of QC as Kodak does (and Fuji did). Not that Kodak is/was flawless, but
it's amazing how close to perfect they can get in
manufacturing their stocks.

Re: [Frameworks] Modern 16mm features, distributed on film

2014-07-18 Thread 40 Frames
Hi John,

Feature is a somewhat broad term, and speaks more to run time than
form/content, but given your examples, I would assume you are asking about
experimental features??

The exact run time of a feature also seems to be dictated by
market/venue. Some say 40 minutes, some 60, and the industry
state side usually says/said 70+ minutes.

There was a surf film (*Hangs Upon Nothing*) that was shot on 16mm and
distributed as a 16mm print during the last couple years (2013-2014). This
is obviously pretty rare. Shooting on 16mm is not uncommon for ski,
snowboard, skate and surf films, but in recent years even shooting on 16mm
has become less common, coinciding with the appearance of RED and GoPro
cameras.

I'm glad to see Charlotte mentioned Betzy's recent work (*Voluptuous Sleep*
I have yet to see), as well as Amanda's mention of Barbara Sternberg (*In
The Nature of Things*, 44 minutes) whose longer form work, I feel, is some
of her best.

On the shorter side of features, there is Thom Anderson's *Get Out of the
Car* (2010, 34 minutes), which I believe exists as a 16mm print?

Has any of Kevin Jerome Everson's recent work (*Quality Control, The Island
of St Mathews*) been distributed as 16mm?

In addition to *Molussia*, maybe Pip has other examples of recent European
work?

Adam Sekuler watched a lot of films come through NWFF in recent years
(before his departure), and might also have
some additional examples.

Re: [Frameworks] AC/AC 1500W converter query

2014-05-13 Thread 40 Frames
Not so much a response to this post... but to the previous lamp brightness
post...

I have a projector that uses a rheostat to up the voltage sent to an ELC
lamp. It over drives the
lamp voltage, but just slightly, say 24.5-25V. There is a point at which
you can push the lamp
near the breaking point. If sending too much voltage the lamp will blow...
but just a little over 24V
and you're increasing brightness without blowing the lamp. If it shortens
the lamp life, I haven't
noticed it.

Not certain how this would work with the on-board transformer of a Eiki SSL
or Kodak Pageant
or whatever you're wanting to use, but if you have a machine to sacrifice,
you might try a rheostat.

There is also David's suggestion of the higher output ELC (more lumens), or
the suggestion
of a 2 blade shutter (if you currently have a three blade), and using a
fast lens... most 38mm and wide
angle lenses will be f1.5 or slower, but if using an Eiki with an ISCO
35-65, you get f1.3, or if you
have a longer throw, a standard, large barrel 50mm lens is usually f1.2
(Eiki, Bell Howell, etc).

Then, as others have mentioned, there is the gain (reflectivity) of the
screen, and the darkness of the
room. Image size can be another indicator of brightness, one needs to right
size the image according
to the power/efficiency of the light source available.

With xenon lamp houses, a lot of time can be spent aligning/adjusting the
lamp and lamp reflector for optimum efficiency... focusing every bit of
light on the gate without spillover.

When I plug a conventional desk lamp in (a device I am willing to risk!)
with 60W bulb using 120V power (US/CAN standard)
 These are the results:
without converter - standard light output
with converter set to 110V - much much brighter
with converter set to 220V - very dim
I haven’t kept it on for an extended period, but do these results make
 sense?

Of course, I don’t have 220V power handy, so I can’t test the power input
end, though I could maybe try plugging it into a clothes dryer plug (220V)
 with a plug converter…
At $10, no big deal if it is just a heavy useless brick, but it seemed
 worth looking into.
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light (whatever brightness) on this
 situation.
Here is a picture of it:

[Frameworks] Kodak MP bulk orders (RE: Black leaders, etc)

2014-04-26 Thread 40 Frames
Elena Rossi-Snook is working directly with Kodak to coordinate bulk orders.
This would be for items
in the Motion Picture catalogue that are recently discontinued (such as
black leader), or in danger of being discontinued.

*Contact Elena for more info: elenarossisn...@nypl.org
elenarossisn...@nypl.org*

I highly recommend that if your educational program continues to purchase
and use Kodak motion picture product
that you get in contact with Elena. Having large orders placed at once will
ensure the continuation of various products
in the MP catalogue.

When I am cutting negative, I am mostly A rolling, and should have enough
on hand for current projects, however the
news of discontinuation of black leader should be troubling for anyone
wishing to finish on film. Kodak will continue
to make black leader available, if Kodak can do large enough production
runs through bulk orders.

Obviously, you're on a schedule. But, Bernie O'Doherty of Super 16 Inc is

Re: [Frameworks] New Uses for Steenbeck 901 Editing Table?

 other room.

If it's a 901 with the skirt legs those legs actually come off, as does
the viewer, so broken into four parts the machine
is easier to move (with others helping of course, since the table portion
is still heavy w/o legs and viewer attached).

Has anyone made theirs S16 (viewing) compatible? Approximate costs
 involved?

Paul Tomasko used to sell conversion kits. It includes cut or modified
rollers, and insert optic, and (I believe) washers
to raise the height of the prism. The image ends up being smaller on the
screen in order to fit full frame 1.66 inside
the 1.33 viewer.

Steenbeck's official version of this include a lens manufactured for s16,
and a widescreen viewer, which is indeed
rare, though I heard they can be made to order for $s.

Any other new ways to put these machines to good use?

Many folks use the Steenbeck as a printer.

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm graflex / singer / telex projectors

On Mon, May 6, 2013 at 9:36 AM, Ekrem Serdar ekremser...@gmail.com wrote:

Recently had a nice experience projecting with one of these (the manual
load ones), and I'm considering getting one and having it be my primary
 instead of the pageant.

Seems to be easier to find zoom lenses for them, and they seem pretty
smooth, adjustable pressure gate, and some have silent options too. Saw
David Tetzlaff post about them with good words in the archive; anybody
dislike them for any particular reason? (other than heavy and uses older
 bulbs)

The following list includes service and parts for the Singer/Telex/Graflex
projectors. I assume you are talking about the Graflex 900 series?

http://www.16mmdirectory.org/search?q=singer

Chuck Hessinger had a large collection of parts for these machines. You
might want to contact him to ask what he has in stock for the projector you
are interested in or have.

I had a Graflex once, I think it was a model 920. One thing I wasn't too
impressed with was the threading path, which to my memory was not as
accessible as the Pageant.

I always prefer a projector that makes the film easy to load and remove
from the gate and thread path. This also makes it easier to clean the
entire thread path (not just the gate). I seem to recall that even the
manual loading Graflex did not make it easier to access the entire thread
path, but I might be wrong here, as it has been a long time since I have
used one of these projectors.

The 900 series Graflex lens has a barrel diameter of 1.184, compared to the
Pageants 1.156. I bet you could remove the lens housing on the Pageant,
take it to a machine shop and have the shop open up the len port enough to
fit a Graflex zoom lens.

With the Pageant 250S you have a cooler EJL quartz lamp (I've also used ELC
in place of EJL). The Graflex is going to use a much hotter incandescent,
and why have all that heat near the film if you don't have to.

The Pageant may have it's problems (the lens being on the top of the list),
but it just might edge out the Graflex for the reasons I stated above.

 AGFA ST8D

This stock is still made by agfa but they only want to make minmum
 210,000ft runs which produces 105 x 2000ft rolls. (16mm)

People might already be doing this but if anyone wants this stock it might
be a good idea to pool orders through this list and channel other orders
into it to get a big enough order in.

Just checking the price in Euros.

Re: [Frameworks] Agfa ST8D

2013-03-14 Thread 40 Frames
I see, so ST8D in 16mm is now made to order. Is it the same for 35mm?

The main Los Angeles optical sound houses - Chace, DJ, NT - all use AGFA
ST8D. For 16mm track, I believe they use 35/32. Shot as 35mm, then slight
to 16mm.

I talked to Marc at AGFA probably four years ago and he said back then they
AGFA hardly sells ST8D in 16mm.

I have no idea how widely or not used this stock is but it might be
 interesting to find out.

snapper, but I haven't experienced that yet.

I wonder if anyone knows how to track down a manual on one of these? I've
worked quite a bit with Steenbecks in the past and I'm realizing just how
 different they function.

The main problem I've run into so far, and this may be user error rather
than something that needs to be repaired (i hope), but after I've turned on
the switches for the two pix plates for the picture, and they put tension
on the film, I turn the variable knob labeled Master, which I assume is
suposed to transport the film, but nothing happens. The two mag sound knobs
seem to work just fine. I'm figuring I just don't have something adjusted
right since the table was in use as of 2 years ago, from what the fellow
told me. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

True, we'll have Fuji and ORWO and maybe AGFA (print and sound films), but
Kodak MP makes stocks
in 16mm that are not available from these other companies. 7363 and 3374 to
name two. Though I believe
AGFA still makes optical sound recording film in 16mm, getting it is cost
prohibitive with minimum order
requirements.

I hope Kodak MP can survive in another form, but the current model needs to
go.

Re: [Frameworks] Kodak Is Selling Off Its Legendary Film Business [Photography]

2012-08-24 Thread 40 Frames
From Jim Linder's post on AMIA (today)...

Kodak has announced that it is selling other divisions including Consumer
Film. Speculation is that this is due at least partially to low bids for
the patents.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1872396390444812704577607700939340864.html
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-08-23/kodak-to-sell-imaging-units-as-patent-auction-continues

But here is the biggie. According to this article Motion Picture Film is
outside of the core and the article continues with a quote that suggests
that the business may be up for sale. Page 2

Re: [Frameworks] also about the steenbeck in nyc (added info)

2012-08-17 Thread 40 Frames
The following is simply added info for anyone possibly interested in the
Steenbeck that Katherine is trying to move...

If it's from the 80s, then it is likely a model ending in 01.

2 plate - model 1201

4 plate - 1601

6 plate - 1901

8 plate (two picture) - 921

Is it just 16mm or 16/35?

The 01 models with skirt legs can be broken down into four main parts.
Disconnect wires and remove the picture head. Remove all electrical
connections tying
the legs to the rest of the machine, then unbolt the legs. Presto - four
pieces, some of them very heavy, but certainly able to move in a station
wagon. Of course,
leaving the legs on makes it easier to roll on to a truck, but if this is
not an option, taking the legs off can help move it. Furniture dollies
required.

Model 01 Steenbeks produce bi-phase tach and can trigger synch (as Pip
mentioned here in a recent post) to Pro Tools or Soundtrack or other
software that allows one to
sync to Bi-phase, LTC or MTC.

Steenbecks can be converted to cover super16. Paul Tomasko can do this or
sell you a kit.

Steenbecks can have squared spindles for mounting film reels, which is
convenient for inspecting/viewing prints. KEM had round spindles, at least
all the ones I've seen, and
I cannot recall with the Moviola flatbeds have.

Re: [Frameworks] EIKI Xenon repair

2012-08-07 Thread 40 Frames
Ok, you have a EX-300, I believe that takes a 350W xenon. I'm not terribly
familiar with that machine.

For the lamp, try Superior Quartz Product to see if the lamp has been
clones, or try Eiki USA to see if they have stock for the older lamps. You
might even
ask ACE here in Portland as they have a connection with Eiki for parts.

For more info on your machine, try 16mmfilmtalk.com.

As Scott pointed out... ELC is not xenon.

What model of machine do you have SL-II ? Is it the SL or SSL? SL is black
 and SSL is beige-cooper.

Here is a list of bulbs vendors. ELC is easy to find, and usually cheap,
 $9-25.

An ELC lamp is not a xenon type. It is a little baby 24V halogen lamp,
as used in the Eiki and some BH 1500-series classroom projectors.

Is what you have a classroom projector that has beem modified for xenon
 lamps?

All of the Eiki xenon projectors I have seen are units that
use smaller versions of the Osram XBO short arc lamps that theatre systems
use. Those lamps can be purchased through any theatre supply (and I
recommend the folks at Cardinal Sound and Motion Picture in Maryland but
there are plenty of others out there).

For example, the EX1500 uses a little baby 300W XBO-style lamp. Although
it's tiny, it still has a tendency to explode when it gets old so don't
 open
the case without a face mask, leather apron, and gloves. Use the plastic
cover supplied with the new lamp to clamp onto the old lamp and remove it
 inside the plastic cover.

The 300W XBO lamps run around $1200 list... I don't know what Cardinal
 charges
for them these days but give them a call and ask Neil what they have in
 stock.

1 day remaining! for my USA Projects campaign to help support the
completion of Open Road.

I hope you will join RACC.org and the 39 amazing individuals who have
already made a contribution. All donations are tax deductible, and though
“perks” start at $25, donations of any dollar amount are welcome.

“What are the Perks?”, you ask...

A contribution of $25 gets you...
A comp ticket to a screening of Open Road, either at the Portland premiere,
or when it comes to your town. And Open Road will come to your town!

$50 gets you...
A comp ticket to a screening of Open Road, plus a DVD of Open Road. A DVD
that will not be available for retail sale, so a rare item indeed.

$100 gets you...
Comp tickets for you plus one, plus the DVD, and a copy of the book Empty
Quarter: Notes and Pictures. This book, now currently in the layout and
design phase, is a supplement to Pam Minty and Alain LeTourneau’s
experimental documentary Empty Quarter. The book contains essays by
filmmakers and scholars, transcripts from interviews in the film,
geographic information on southeast Oregon (the region documented in the
film), and images from location stills and 16mm out takes from the
production.

$250 gets you...
Comp tickets for you plus one, DVD, book, and dinner for two! Yes, it’s
true, I can cook, and I’m not too bad at it. I will cook you and a guest a
lovely home cooked meal, either at our home, or yours. The meal is meat or
veggie, whatever your preference, wine or your beverage of choice and bit
of sweets after the meal. And if the weather is pleasant I can serve the
meal outside.

$500 gets you...
Comp tickets for you plus three, DVD, book, and dinner for four. What I say
I will do above for two, I can magically do for four as well.

You can find more details about Open Road and make a donation at the link

Re: [Frameworks] Discontinuation of Eastman 35/32mm sound recording stock

2012-07-11 Thread 40 Frames
On Wed, Jul 11, 2012 at 2:55 PM, Mark Toscano fiddy...@yahoo.com wrote:

 Hi all,

Just confirmed with Kodak today that they're discontinuing production of
sound recording stock 3378 (for making track negatives) in 35/32mm. They
have enough stock left for about 1-1.5 years, based on past sales numbers.
35mm and regular 16mm gauges will remain available.

While this may sound somewhat esoteric, 35/32mm is what 16mm track
negatives are often shot on, at least here in L.A., where there are still
several good sound houses making new track negatives for 16mm. I haven't
yet confirmed with a couple of them, but did confirm so far that DJ Audio
can't shoot regular 16mm, only 35/32mm, and Pete at DJ thinks there may not
be any sound house in L.A. that can shoot regular 16mm. I'll check around
with some of the other sound houses though.

Pete did say that Agfa makes a 35/32mm sound recording stock, which he's
used and thought was perfectly good. So bottom line, this isn't the
loudest of alarms being sounded, but something worth noting, at least.

Hi Mark,

Fuji released a 35mm optical sound stock, however I do not believe it's
available as 32/35.
http://www.fujifilm.com/products/motion_picture/lineup/eterna_rsn/

Though you might try contacting Michael Bulbenko at Fuji to see if they
have a 32/35 version.

My understand is that most if not all of those companies shooting optical
tracks in Los Angeles - NT, Chace, DJ - are shooting
on AGFA 35 and 32/35 stock.

Gibbs Chapman in SF can shoot 16mm track, though I cannot recall if he has
a 2000' mag or only 1200'.

Cinema Labs in Colorado shoots 16mm track, or used to, and I think they are
1200' only as well.

Transit Audio in Toronto was doing it for a while but I believe they stop.
LIFT would know if anyone is still shooting track in Toronto,
or LIFT may now have a camera in their facility.

I know there are other places, but I have to consult the list that I seemed
to have misplaced.

40 Frames actually owns a Harvey optical sound camera with Maurer F prime
galvo, but honestly, it's hard to compete with the cost
and level of quality that NT, Chace and DJ provide. DJ in particular can do
very good work for a very competitive rate.

Actually, I am surprised to here that Kodak would dump 32/35 and keep 16mm,
rather than the other way around. Seems like 16mm
will be next on the list to go. I know AGFA's sales of 16mm are not good
and I cannot image that Kodak is any better, though I would
love to hear differently. AGFA comes into the U.S. through HFC, and the
minimum orders are very expensive.
