Re: [Freedos-user] Arachne Stopped Working

2006-10-13 Thread Lester Vedrox

From: Eric Auer, Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2006 20:25:33 +0200 (MEST)

Hi, some educated guess: when you used winxp, it got a new ip number from your
router or
dsl modem or whatever you use. now the modem is no longer happy with the
settings you
selected in arachne. a workaround might be to update the settings for arachne.
another one
can be to simply reboot your modem...

Those IP addresses, etc. on the LAN side of the router never change after pc
restart,
because there is only one machine on the network. Ideally, I would like to find
out how to get
the configuration with BOOTP running, as it doesn't involve any manual IP
adress entries:

[tcp/ip]
IP_Address BOOTP
NameServer
AltNameServer
Gateway 0.0.0.0
AltGateway 0.0.0.0
Netmask 0.0.0.0

The idea comes from Arachne user group, but I haven't figured out yet how to
post the
message there.

http://www.freelists.org/archives/arachne/05-2006/msg00072.html

The commands shown above are incomplete. I assume that they shoul be like this:

[tcp/ip]
IP_Address BOOTP
NameServer
AltNameServer
Gateway 0.0.0.0
AltGateway 0.0.0.0
Netmask 0.0.0.0
TCPconfig LANTCP.CFG

Lantcp.cfg:

hostname=arachne
sockdelay=30
mss=1024

Re: [Freedos-user] faster packet driver loading

2006-10-12 Thread Lester Vedrox
Eric Auer: I think it would help to specify a fixed media type, for example
10 mbit /
halfduplex.

After loading rtspkt shows: line speed 100Mbps, full duplex. In practice
there is no
difference in driver loading time between the following two commands:

RTSPKT 0x60 -M 100FULL 2 3

RTSPKT.COM 0x60 -M AUTO 2 3

I settled for the latter one (-m auto) because that's how it set in WindowsXP

[Freedos-user] How To Get Arachne Working With DSL Connection?

My connection: DSL modem + router + Realtek NIC.

The packet driver RTSPKT.com loads fine but Arachne won't open any web page.

WinXP (command line: IPCONFIG /ALL) .

AltNameServer
Gateway 0.0.0.0
AltGateway 0.0.0.0

Japheth, you use WATTCP. I've read somewhere in the help files that for DSL it
is recommended to use BOOTP and LANTCP.CFG. I have tried your idea but got
tcp/ip unable to initialize message (or something to that effect).

Using my configuration settings I actually seem to get tcp/ip initialized but I
can't load any web page.

My starting page, indicates that tcp/ip is ok:

However, when I try to open http://www.bttr-software.de I keep getting the
following error:

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/6413/10122006200958ky3.png

Also, what are the default settings for WATTCP.CFG. I changed them when trying
out your settings but forgot to backup the original ones. Now they look like
this:

my_ip = 0.0.0.0

Thanks, Bernd, problem resolved. As it turns out I didn't understand the term name server
use in Arachne.

Your method with WatTcp will work ok but I decided to do manual tcp/ip setup instead. The
following will work with default settings of Linksys routers:

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5972/10122006224112zd5.png

The resulting Arachne.cfg looks as follows:

IP_Grab IP address set to
NameServer 192.168.1.1
AltNameServer 0.0.0.0

Wattcp.cfg contents is as simple as this, assuming you got a Router
 running at 192.168.1.1 :)
Works perfect for my VMware machines, who are bridged to the physical
 network

 my_ip = 192.168.1.1
 netmask = 255.255.255.0
 gateway = 192.168.1.1
 nameserver=192.168.1.1

also set a variable to the directory (for a file called
 c:\freedos\wattcp.cfg it's):
 set wattcp.cfg=c:\freedos

Alternatively, check out Erwin Veermans' bootdisks, they can use FreeDOS
and some flavours got Arachne on them installed

 http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/index.html
 ftp://psy.med.rug.nl/nwdsk/fd16ara.exe

to my knowledge Arachne can simply use wattcp's settings.

A peek at Fdauto.bat shows that your packet-driver aborts loading

I see that my message from Oct-10 is blank on Sourceforge archives page so I

Thanks, everyone. TCP/IP can be set with BOOTP now and seems to be working ok.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9059/10112006035337it6.png

Arachne still doesn't work but let's first make sure that everything is fine
with RTSPKT.

Q1) In Fdauto.bat I load Rtspkt after all other drivers, just before the
mouse, not sure if it
matters:

@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
SET DOSDIR=C:\FDOS
SET NLSDIR=%DOSDIR%\NLS
SET HELPPATH=%DOSDIR%\HELP
SET PATH=%DOSDIR%\BIN
SET TEMP=E:\TEMP
SET TMP=E:\TEMP
SET DIRCMD=/P /OG /A
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330
SHCDX33A /D:?CDRCACH$ /V /~+ /Q+
RTSPKT.COM 0x60 2 3
CTMOUSE.EXE
ECHO CuteMouse Driver Loaded
FREE.EXE

In real life I don't really load Rtspkt from Fdauto.bat but turn it on/off from
two custom batch
files. This way you don't need to be connected all the time:

Dslon.bat
RTSPKT.COM 0x60 2 3

Dsloff.bat
RTSPKT.COM -U

Q2) If more parameters were specified then it would probably load faster (it's
quite slow
compared to other drivers):

RTSPKT [options] packet_int_no [-m media_type] [bus_no device_no]

Bus#=2 and Device#=3 are shown below, where can you find Media Type?

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/7287/10102006124405sw0.png

command line as is now: RTSPKT.COM 0x60 2 3
command line as it should be: RTSPKT.COM 0x60 -m ??? 2 3

Thanks, Eric. RTSPKT loads from Fdauto.bat ok but Arachne still won't work

Here are the specs again:

Connection: DSL, modem + router
Arachne browser: v1.90J1

Packet Driver: RTSPKT.com

The driver seems to be loading ok, I'm not sure if any switches should be

enter IP address, etc. manually. Here is the screenshot of Arachne.cfg

Still no luck. Any suggestions?

EA irq are numbered 0 to 15, so what do you mean by irq 17?

The last IRQ on my system has number 22:

Windows XP - accessories - system tools - system information - hardware

EA is this a real modem or more a soundcard (winmodem)?

It seems to be a real hardware modem: Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem.

Windows XP - accessories - system tools - system information - components -

- attached to: COM3
- IRQ channel: 17
- reset: ATF,cr

Arachne has the last available IRQ 15 so this is probably the source of my

[Freedos-user] Partitioning Software

2006-06-07 Thread Lester Vedrox
Mark I have found Partition Magic unreliable on WindowsXP Service Pack 2
 (and later) versions of NTFS.

JL, Mark I would recommend trying:

http://gparted.sourceforge.net

JL Easy to use, the GUI really help understanding how the partition layout.
Too bad it's too small for CD and too big for floppy, and needs to boot Linux.

If for some reason Gnome (link above) is not sufficient then Partition
Commander (U$50) works just fine with WinXP SP2 NTFS. It's GUI looks ok, too.
It can also be easily setup on a standalone bootable CD.

 PartitionMagic:

 http://www.partitionmagic.com/home_homeoffice/products/system_performance/pm80/index.html

 Partition Commander:

 http://www.v-com.com/product/Partition_Commander_Home.html

 Acronis Disk Director Suite:

 http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/

Partition Commander, for instance, allows converting NTFS partitions back to
FAT, the feature that was absent in PartitionMagic. Acronis Disk Director
Suite seems to have the best choice of features of all three products, but I
have never tried it so can't comment on it.

This is just an example of the most straightforward configuration (I think) for
a poster who doesn't seem to have much experience with multi-boot systems. NTFS
partitions in the above example could of course remain visible because
FreeDOS will simply ignore any partition with a file system other than FAT12,
FAT16 or FAT32.

Arkady You can have 4 primary partitions or up to 3 primary partitions and one
extended partition with any quantity of logical partitions.

You can have up to three primary partitions and one logical partition.
Each primary partition can be made active or bootable (which means the
same thing). Most operating systems must be installed on a primary
partition. To avoid conflicts and problems the best idea is to install
each operating system on a dedicated partition. Before booting you should
make one primary partition active (eg. the one with FreeDOS) and all
remaining primary partitions hidden. As far as logical partition is
concerned (drives D to Z) FreeDOS won't see any NTFS drives.

Here is example of how the hard drive could look before you boot to
Windows XP:

- Drive C, NTFS, primary, active, Windows XP
- Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows 2000
- Drive -, FAT32, primary, hidden, FreeDOS
- Drive D, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS
- Drive E, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS
- Drive F, FAT32, logical, visible to XP, 2000 and FreeDOS

Now, to boot to FreeDOS you would have to use the boot manager and get the
following:

- Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows XP
- Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows 2000
- Drive C, FAT32, primary, active, FreeDOS
- Drive -, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS
- Drive -, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS
- Drive D, FAT32, logical, visible to XP, 2000 and FreeDOS

You could consider creating this extra Fat32 logical drive (F under XP, D
under FreeDOS) to easily transfer files between XP and FreeDOS and also
for installing DOS applications (you can then defrag them from XP).

Boot Manager: grub4dos is often mentioned on this forum but I don't have
the link. I use this freebie and it works great:

http://www.boot-us.com/

Once you get everything running in this basic configuration then you can
try to experiment installing two OSes on the same primary partition but
that's when things get much more complicated.

[Freedos-user] Command.com XMS Swap

In the previous post Eric wrote:

I have found two versions available on Fdos.org:

2) Official version: 0.82 pl3 XMS_swap (92 KB):

Pre-release 0.84 seems to be working just fine.

[Freedos-user] Command With Colour Escape Sequence

2006-05-19 Thread Lester Vedrox
The colour escape sequence in NANSI.SYS to get yellow letters on a black
background is:

SGR:ESC[33;40m

How the command line should exactly look like? Someone mentioned before
that it would work with ECHO. The following doesn't work:

C:\FDOS\BIN\NANSI.SYS /S SGR:ESC[33;40m
SGR:ESC[33;40 C:\FDOS\BIN\NANSI.SYS /S

 Help File
Format: ESC[param;param;...;param cmd // spaces are not allowed
between parameters

SGR (Set Graphics Rendition)

SGR:ESC[#;#;...#m
SGR:ESC[33;40m

The Set Graphics Rendition command is used to select foreground and
background colors or attributes. When you use multiple parameters,
they are executed in sequence, and the effects are cumulative.

Attrib Value
0 All attributes off (normal white on black)
1 Bold

5 Blink
7 Reverse Video
30-37 foreground

Of course, eecho in config.sys should come after loading ansi.sys.

Re: [Freedos-user] Command With Colour Escape Sequence

2006-05-19 Thread Lester Vedrox
All three methods of entering escape sequence work in Edit.exe v0.7d. However,
you have to remember that Echo and Eecho work properly only when run at startup
(they are placed in Config.sys). If you just want to test the colours from the
command line or from a test batch file you have to use Prompt.

For Edit.exe v0.7d the escape code is generated when you hit Esc key. The code
character looks like a small left arrow.

Echo and Eecho are executed just after Nansi.sys so the command line should be
entered right there.

Here is the summary of all three methods (the parameters are set for green
characters on blue background):

1) Config.sys

ECHO esc_code[32;44m
rem hit Esc key to generate escape code

2) Config.sys

EECHO $[32;44m

3) Autoexec.bat or command line or a test batch file

PROMPT $E[32;44m$P$G

The colour codes are s follows:

30-37 foreground black /red/green/yellow/blue/magenta/cyan/white
40-47 background black/red/green/yellow/blue/magenta/cyan/white

[Freedos-user] TDSK.EXE and XMSDSK.EXE

2006-05-16 Thread Lester Vedrox
1) Which ram disk is more modern: TDSK.EXE or XMSDSK.EXE?

2) If it's XMSDSK.EXE then where can I get it from? It's supposed to be in file
FURD19_u.zip but I can't locate it anywhere in the file downloads.

3) Is there any way to assign a specific drive letter to TDSK.EXE? Ideally I
would need the
letter A.

4) The computer doesn't have the floppy drive and I'm trying to install an
older MS-DOS
application that won't install from any other drive but A. I have tried to
force SHCDX33A to
assign A to cd-rom but it wouldn't allow that (it seems the drive letter must
be D or lower):

SHCDX33A /D:?CDRCACH$ /L:A

If this can't be done with RAM disk then the next option is USB drive (possible
to achieve
but more complicated).

[Freedos-user] Problems Loading SHSURDRV.EXE

I'm trying to use the new (Dec-2005) SHSURDRV.EXE from Jason Hood's

When used straight from the command line it works ok:

When Shsurdrv.exe is replaced with the old Tdsk.exe everything works fine
again:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\TDSK.EXE 8192

Because SHSURDRV loads high by default on its own I used DEVICE instead of
DEVICEHIGH. Or should it be just loaded from Autoexec.bat instead of
Config.sys?

After running MEM command my XMS readings with TDSK loaded are as follows:

total=456640, used=11442

Re: [Freedos-user] Customizing Startup Files

2006-05-09 Thread Lester Vedrox

1) Thanks, Eric. I set LBACACHE as suggested for SATA drive:

INSTALLHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\LBACACHE.COM 4096 TUNS

This, however, resulted in the following error after Config.sys:

Bad or missing command interpreter

After removing TUNS Autoexec.bat resumed running without problems. I guess
it depends on the drive. Would you suggest anything else in place of TUNS
or just leave this blank as is?

INSTALLHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\LBACACHE.COM 8192

2) Running US-Eng keyboard straight from BIOS (which is US anyways) sounds
like a good idea but I still can't get the right ALT key working. The
following approach didn't solve the problem either (kb2pre4.zip):

LH KEYB US,,C:\FDOS\BIN\KEYBOARD.SYS

Maybe it's because it's multimedia keyboard.

INSTALLHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\LBACACHE.COM BUF 12 DRV C

see LBACACHE /? for the current syntax. I think you should
use something like LBACACHE 4096 TUNS (if you do not use
SCSI / SATA / RAID, the TUNS is not needed). You may want
to add the FLOP option for floppy caching, too. DRV is not
needed as drives are autodetected.

What's the proper keyboard driver for US-Eng keyboard?

The best is probably not using a driver at all as the BIOS default is US.

http://johnson.tmfc.net/freedos/

You will need both QCDROM Driver and SHSUCDX CDROM Interface Driver. When
you download the files put all of them in c:\fdos\bin. The actual file
names will be as follows:

QCDROM.SYS
SHCDX33A.ASM
SHCDX33A.COM

In Config.sys modify the line for CDROM:

rem DEVICEHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\ATAPICDD.SYS /D:CDROM001
DEVICEHIGH=C:\FDOS\BIN\QCDROM.SYS /D:CDROM1

In Autoexec.bat rem out the line that references to SHSUCDX.COM and add:

SHCDX33A /D:?CDROM1 /C /V /~+ /Q+

RE: FreeCOM memory allocation error with SHSUCDX
2006-05-03 16:52

I wrote on April 15 (see original text below) about a memory allocation
error that I was getting on 3 computers running the very-little-modified
installation created by the bootable install CD. The error *seemed* to be
heavily related to SHSUCDX -- it would disappear altogether on 2 of 3
machines if I used the /C switch to load it in conventional memory.

But now I think the error was due to one or more of the international
support features installed by default from the CD. SHSUCDX was merely
triggering the error. I think this because the error went away on all 3
machines when I removed NLSFUNC, CHCP, DISPLAY, MODE CON CODEPAGE, and
KEYB.
I can now load SHSUCDX without the /C switch and not trigger the error.
And

I can locate SHSUCDX higher in AUTOEXEC.BAT without triggering the error.

I wish I had more precise info, but I think someone with technical
debugging

capability will have to take it from here. The only bit I can add is that
when I was singlestepping through bootup with one test configuration on one
machine, the error did not occur. But when I allowed an uninterrupted
boot,

the error was generated after KEYB ran.

[Freedos-user] Customizing Startup Files

2006-05-08 Thread Lester Vedrox
I'm trying to customize startup files and have a few questions.

---FDCONFIG.SYS---

1) STACKS=9,256. STACKS=0,0 seem a bit risky

2) DEVICE=C:\FDOS\BIN\UMBPCI.SYS

As UMBPCI.SYS is used insted of EMM386.EXE what's the proper setting for DOS
and DOSDATA. I left both at:

DOS=HIGH,UMB
DOSDATA=UMB

Should this be changed to:

DOS=HIGH
rem DOSDATA=UMB

3) What is this: SET DIRCMD=/OGN

4) DEVICE=C:\FDOS\BIN\FDXXMST.SYS BIOS NUMHANDLES=64

How to figure out the best value for numhandles (my pc: AMD Athlon 64, 512 MB
RAM)

5) Which Shell command is better:

SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /P=C:\FDAUTO.BAT
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\FDOS\BIN /E:512 /P=C:\FDAUTO.BAT

---FDAUTO.BAT---

6) I had to rem out this one, it returns some memory error:

rem LH KEYB US,,%DOSDIR%\BIN\KEYBOARD.SYS

What's the proper keyboard driver for US-Eng keyboard? My keyboard works almost
ok without any FDos driver loaded except that right ALT key doesn't work.
Ideally I would like to get it working as well.

Thanks

Lester

Thanks, Eric and John. Version 1.3 works like charm. I think the first
link listed below is the best to look for program updates (just look for
the latest date) and the second one is optional:

[Freedos-user] Re: Can't Boot To Hard Drive

2006-05-05 Thread Lester Vedrox

Thanks, Mark. I got FreeDos booting properly now after taking the following three steps (I
can't tell which of them was critical to resolve the problem):

1) Installing the latest 8632 kernel from here: http://fdos.org/kernel/kwc8632.dev.zip

2) Installing FreeCom's command.com:

http://fdos.org/kernel/cmdxms.HEAD.zip

which was mentioned by Eric on another thread:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=10247017forum_id=36903

3) Correcting the command line error (due to some inconsistencies in Help files):

old way: C:\ sys c: c: ENT

new way: C\ sys c: c: /bootonly ENT

Indeed, I don't have a floppy in my new machine, not even the serial port. That's why I
turned to FreeDOS to run my Iomega JazDrive an transfer some files from an older
computer. FreeDOS passed the JazDrive test with flying colours. It linked to Iomega's
Guest.exe at the first attempt.

Good day, Lester:

Have you tried the development kernel.sys file from
http://fdos.org/kernel/? Especially if your computer
does
not have a floppy disk drive, this may fix a Bad
or missing command interpreter error that occurs
during
the boot process. I am assuming you did a sys c: c:
and then rebooted to get this error.

Let us know if the development kernel helps.

Mark
