Re: [Freedos-user] Arachne Stopped Working
From: Eric Auer, Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2006 20:25:33 +0200 (MEST) Hi, some educated guess: when you used winxp, it got a new ip number from your router or dsl modem or whatever you use. now the modem is no longer happy with the settings you selected in arachne. a workaround might be to update the settings for arachne. another one can be to simply reboot your modem... Those IP addresses, etc. on the LAN side of the router never change after pc restart, because there is only one machine on the network. Ideally, I would like to find out how to get the configuration with BOOTP running, as it doesn't involve any manual IP adress entries: [tcp/ip] IP_Address BOOTP NameServer AltNameServer Gateway 0.0.0.0 AltGateway 0.0.0.0 Netmask 0.0.0.0 The idea comes from Arachne user group, but I haven't figured out yet how to post the message there. http://www.freelists.org/archives/arachne/05-2006/msg00072.html The commands shown above are incomplete. I assume that they shoul be like this: [tcp/ip] IP_Address BOOTP NameServer AltNameServer Gateway 0.0.0.0 AltGateway 0.0.0.0 Netmask 0.0.0.0 TCPconfig LANTCP.CFG Lantcp.cfg: hostname=arachne sockdelay=30 mss=1024 Lester - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Eric Auer: I think it would help to specify a fixed media type, for example 10 mbit / halfduplex. After loading rtspkt shows: line speed 100Mbps, full duplex. In practice there is no difference in driver loading time between the following two commands: RTSPKT 0x60 -M 100FULL 2 3 RTSPKT.COM 0x60 -M AUTO 2 3 I settled for the latter one (-m auto) because that's how it set in WindowsXP Lester - Using Tomcat but need to do more? LV - Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows XP LV - Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows 2000 LV - Drive C, FAT32, primary, active, FreeDOS Eric Why would you make the ntfs drives hidden? DOS will not use them anyway... This is just an example of the most straightforward configuration (I think) for a poster who doesn't seem to have much experience with multi-boot systems. NTFS partitions in the above example could of course remain visible because FreeDOS will simply ignore any partition with a file system other than FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32. Re: [Freedos-user] freedos installation
James, I'm not sure if you really got all your partitions right. The most common configuration is as follows. You can have up to three primary partitions and one logical partition. Each primary partition can be made active or bootable (which means the same thing). Most operating systems must be installed on a primary partition. To avoid conflicts and problems the best idea is to install each operating system on a dedicated partition. Before booting you should make one primary partition active (eg. the one with FreeDOS) and all remaining primary partitions hidden. As far as logical partition is concerned (drives D to Z) FreeDOS won't see any NTFS drives. Here is example of how the hard drive could look before you boot to Windows XP: - Drive C, NTFS, primary, active, Windows XP - Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows 2000 - Drive -, FAT32, primary, hidden, FreeDOS - Drive D, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS - Drive E, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS - Drive F, FAT32, logical, visible to XP, 2000 and FreeDOS Now, to boot to FreeDOS you would have to use the boot manager and get the following: - Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows XP - Drive -, NTFS, primary, hidden, Windows 2000 - Drive C, FAT32, primary, active, FreeDOS - Drive -, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS - Drive -, NTFS, logical, visible to XP 2000, not visible to FreeDOS - Drive D, FAT32, logical, visible to XP, 2000 and FreeDOS You could consider creating this extra Fat32 logical drive (F under XP, D under FreeDOS) to easily transfer files between XP and FreeDOS and also for installing DOS applications (you can then defrag them from XP). Boot Manager: grub4dos is often mentioned on this forum but I don't have the link. I use this freebie and it works great: http://www.boot-us.com/ Once you get everything running in this basic configuration then you can try to experiment installing two OSes on the same primary partition but that's when things get much more complicated. Re: [Freedos-user] Command With Colour Escape Sequence
All three methods of entering escape sequence work in Edit.exe v0.7d. However, you have to remember that Echo and Eecho work properly only when run at startup (they are placed in Config.sys). If you just want to test the colours from the command line or from a test batch file you have to use Prompt. For Edit.exe v0.7d the escape code is generated when you hit Esc key. The code character looks like a small left arrow. Echo and Eecho are executed just after Nansi.sys so the command line should be entered right there. Here is the summary of all three methods (the parameters are set for green characters on blue background): 1) Config.sys ECHO esc_code[32;44m rem hit Esc key to generate escape code 2) Config.sys EECHO $[32;44m 3) Autoexec.bat or command line or a test batch file PROMPT $E[32;44m$P$G The colour codes are s follows: 30-37 foreground black /red/green/yellow/blue/magenta/cyan/white 40-47 background black/red/green/yellow/blue/magenta/cyan/white Lester -- ___ Surf the Web in a faster, safer and easier way: Download Opera 8 at http://www.opera.com Powered by Outblaze --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? The error *seemed* to be heavily related to SHSUCDX -- it would disappear altogether on 2 of 3 machines if I used the /C switch to load it in conventional memory. But now I think the error was due to one or more of the international support features installed by default from the CD. SHSUCDX was merely triggering the error. I think this because the error went away on all 3 machines when I removed NLSFUNC, CHCP, DISPLAY, MODE CON CODEPAGE, and KEYB. I can now load SHSUCDX without the /C switch and not trigger the error. And I can locate SHSUCDX higher in AUTOEXEC.BAT without triggering the error. I wish I had more precise info, but I think someone with technical debugging capability will have to take it from here. The only bit I can add is that when I was singlestepping through bootup with one test configuration on one machine, the error did not occur. But when I allowed an uninterrupted boot, the error was generated after KEYB ran. --John Hupp --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
