Re: [Audyssey] week9 of football
Hi Thomas, Actually I don't have a problem with the ATT voices dictionaries. The problem is just like different synthesizers the different sapi5 voices pronounce words differently especially names, Email addresses and other non standard words. I have also found over 250 different acronyms that one or more of my 22 sapi5 voices know. But there is not one single acronym that all of the voices know. This includes ATT, Cepstral, Microsoft, Neo Speech and Scan Soft. Plus different ones will say different things for the same acronym. I discovered this while writing games and the game would speak and I would be like what the heck did that just say? I like that ATT Crystal knows such acronyms as LOL, BTW, IMHO, a bunch of the states abbreviations etc etc. So but now I often misspell or use the wrong spelling of words in my games, such as Do you wish to reed the instructions? so that none of the voices say Do you wish to red the instructions? But like I said it is not just the different sapi5 voices, but the different synthesizers that I have had. You know like the Echo, Accent SA, Double Talk, Triple Talk, Eloquence and Dec Talk 32. Once I was reading messages in a FidoNet echo and these ladies were talking about crocheting eating all day. With the way that the Accent pronounced that word I about fell out of my chair. I had to check the spelling to figure out what they were talking about. I think that it is funny that the Microsoft voices say crows nest for a similar word. But it is not even just synthesizers. Was once playing a computer game of Jeopardy and the lady that was reading the screen read the question as What is an orange gutten? After thinking I said, would you believe that is orangutan? So you know I think that it is more the English language and spelling of words that is the problem. grin BFN - Original Message - Hi Jim, That seams to be the major problem with ATT voices. Since they are recorded voice samples rather than sinthesised they are unable to correctly speak words that is outside there dictionary. That is why I mainly stick to voices like Scansoft which sound good and have a higher chanse of properlyspeaking unusual words. Jim I think that my hoe is out in the garden. Hi Bryan, I hate to say this, but I can not really give you a totally successful strategy for either offence or defense in football. Allot of it is guess work and knowing the game of football. Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchen's full puppy golf course
Hi Charles, Yeah, the only thing about adding a log file thing to the football game would be trying to decide how much of it should go to the log file. Like do you want the hut hut hike, just the yards gained or lost on each play or the description of each play. I would have to get back into that code to really see how much work any or all of that would involve. It might be very easy if all speech goes through a speech routine like it does in many of the games, but if it doesn't like because it was converted from a dos version, it might take one heck of allot of work. Re: [Audyssey] Jim's NFL Football.
Hi Bryan, Just like real football there is no one single strategy that will work all the time. Part is experience, and part is just guess work. For example, if the other team ttries to pass the ball allot you might want to switch to or setup a passing defense based on the other teams plays. A blitz also works wonders in Jim's NFL. I have sacked my share of aponent quarterbacks using that defensive play. However, if the other team is doing allot of running plays you will want to use a strong defensive play like a goal line which forms your defensive team in a long line which the enemy team must run through or try and get around the left or right end. Which may force the other team to switch tactics and go for a short, screen, or long pass. I have just recorded week 4 of the Browns verses the Bengles, which as a win for me, and I can upload it if you want to hear an example game being played. Bryan Mckinnish wrote: Hi all. Hi Nicol, Unfortunately, what Ian says is partly true. Some games are just not fully able to be converted to audio. For example, in Load Runner, if I am thinking of the right game, you hav to remove parts of the floor, and you need a full visual view of the layout to play correctly. I suppose it is possible, anything is possible, but converting it to audio would be difficult. nicol wrote: Hi all Ian humphreys from spoonbill games developed a game for the sighted people, almost like monte, its also a game with ladders and treasures. Re: [Audyssey] load runner
Hi Dark, Donkey Kong and Pitfall are really possible. I've actually thought trying one or both of those games using the Monty Engine. Even the newer Donkey Kong games like DK 64 is not out of the question. Dark wrote: Hello Nicol. Load runner is I believe, actually an old game developed in the 80's for tapedrive computers such as the Zx spectrum, (or in the case of Ian's version, tthhe aple).it seems to have been very popular, and has recieved a good few sited remakes I believe. as Ian says, i believe it's deffinately a game involving quick reactions, but as we all know that's not a problem in audio. the main trouble that occurs to me with Load runner though, is the problem of overview. the game is similar to monti, in that you play a character climbing ladders, jumping betwene ledges and collecting treasures in 2D, but the main difference is that you have the power to remove blocks in the ledges in front of you. Monsters continuously charge streight at you, often with no room for you to jump, so strategically removing the floor in order to make them fall is your only defence. the problem is of course, once you've removed the floor, you have a fairly big risk of trapping yourself in. the main difficulty that occurs to me with load runner in particular, is that you really need a major overview of the entire map in one fell swoop, so that you can know which floors are and are not safe to remove, and when you need to wait for the monsters to pass you, and when it's safe to run for it. I'm not saying this is an unsummountable problem, or that an audio version of Load runner would be impossible, only that thinking about how the game works, I can't personally come up with a workable solution in audio at this point, sinse there's a very large amount of vertical and horizontal information in the game to represent, which you need to be continually aware of in a strategical sense. there are however quite a number of games in that style, which it strikes me would be incredibly easy to convert into audio in a similar fashion to Monti, such as Manic miner, jet set willy, Pitfall, or of course, the original Donkey Kong game from the good old Nes, not to mention more modern games such as Prince of Persia. Perhaps Ian might considder doing one of those at some point? given Monti, i deffinately can see how they would be possible in audio, and it's entirely probable that in the case of Load runner, there's something that just hasn't occurred to me as well. [Audyssey] what about a kwiditch game
Hi jim I want to encourage you, if you have the time to try write a kwiditch game. Although phil have a kwiditch game in the sarah game, its only sarah on the kwiditch pitch. I think you have the talent to create a kwiditch game, where different teams take part. You can make it more or less the same than the baseball game, the pitch goes from low to high and if it reaches a certain pitch, then it means you have to catch the snitch. And to avoid a bludger you have to avoid another tone, going from high to low for example. [Audyssey] Giving your address in games?
Hi all, This is quite a tricky subject to bring up, but I would please like advice on the following. I want to register for a football game, and, I have also seen this request in form fields of games that, until now, I haven't joined. They want your actual address, and the fields are marked compulsory. They do say that incomplete register info could cause your account to be deleted. I, however, don't really want to give my full address out, and I don't see why I should, as I'm not buying anything and I don't want anything sent to me. This also seems like a really bad practise, because if you think of quite young kids who'd like to play games and then giving their address over the internet like that, there are serious problems that could develop which may involve parents in the long run, example say now someone could somehow hack into the system, or a loony player could somehow fall out with the kid and start sending hatemail or something? Sorry, just an uncomfortable issue I thought of raising because I'll probably just give some false address or something, but we as online gamers and people who do fill in quite a lot of forms must really be aware and careful of such things. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2
Hi, What I'm trying to build is an engine that has wrapper functions for all the DirectSound functions. So a CreateBuffer() function and a SetPan() function instead of using the methods from the IDirectSound8 interface. In that way, if I wish to switch to XAudio2, I just have to change these wrappers and the whole engine and any potential game sourcecode will still work fine. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 - was: new directx 9
Hi Charles, Actually, that is a very good answer, and I will answer it as this would effect everyone on list to some degree or another. Especially, game developers that are using .Net. The XNA Framework is Microsoft's new XBox development framework for Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003, and the XBox 360. It is scheduled by Microsoft to replace managed DirectX sometime over the next year so game developers aren't given a choice about this if they want to remain current with Microsoft technologies. One major difference between XAudio and DirectSound is audio output. In DirectSound you could use simple stereo panning to position audio effects as was done in Montezuma's Revenge, Troopenum, and other 2D accesible games. However, with XAudio the library is designed strictly for 3D positional effects which is over kill for a 2D game like Montezuma's Revenge. There are advantages and disadvantages with 3D audio effects. An advantage for us using 3D audio effects is with the proper hardware the game can render some truly incredible audio environments. On the down side it is more hardware intensive, you need better than average sound cards and headphones to get the full effect, and is over kill for games like Montezuma's Revenge. What XAudio comes down to is a question of hardware for the end user. Microsoft's new input library, XInput, is a new library for handling keyboards, mice, and game controllers. The primary advantage I can see with XInput is it allows XBox 360 owners to use their XBox game controllers on their PC with accessible games. Now, here is the kicker. If an accessible game developer purchased the Pro XNA development tools he or she could in theory create and sell XBox 360 games and sell Windows PC games with only miner modifications to the game source code. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2
Hi Davy, Well, I understand what you are trying to do, but there are some major changes/differences between DirectSound and XAudio you might want to be aware of before blindly creating allot of wrappers that require allot of reworking in the future. To my knoledge XAudio doesn't offer a simple stereo pan control and uses full 3D positional buffers in games. Another consideration you might want to take note of is that IDirectSound8 has been depricated for a long time. You should be using the DirectX 9.0C com components. As of November 2007 IDirectSound8 no longer ships with the SDK and distribution package. Cheers. Re: [Audyssey] monty question
Hiya Thomas and all. Sorry for the late reply on this one have been out of town at a convention. Thomas do you know how the original game worked, manual swords or automatic when you got close to the monster? I was never able to play the original Monty that well so I don't recall. That is one reason this Monty is so exciting for me. At the risk of being somewhat of a purist I'd argue for keeping it like the original unless this truly complicates the game from a programming, not from a playing standpoint. If you don't remember how it worked I can probably blow at least most of the dust out of one of my old Atari's and try to fire it up and see if my wife wants to try a game or two of the old Monty so we can find out. Just let me know. Re: [Audyssey] the blind eye
Hi, I've played the game a few times. I've found, there's one way to avoid the walls. When you walk out in the open, your footsteps are not that loud. If you have a wall on your right or left, or walk towards one ahead, your footsteps will get louder, and it will sound a bit like when you walk towards a wall in reality. I hope, this helps a little. Also, remember that if you are walking in the area, where you can hear cars, you may get run over, if you try to cross the road. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 - was: new directx 9
Hi Shaun, Well, unfortunately screen reading on the XBox at this point is out of the question, but there are ways that the games themselves can be made accessible. One way is by creating a soundbank of speech clips that announce things like the menus, stats, and so on. Shades of Doom, Sarah, etc already do this so the same concept would apply to XBox 360 games. As for Shades of Doom on the XBox GMA would have to completely rewrite the game for the XBox in C# .Net with the XNA Framework which I hardly think he is likely to do, but would be wickedly cool. shaun everiss wrote: hmmm. Now if ms makes xbox have speech enough to access and change menu settings, etc, or someone makes a screenreader for xbox, really only the menus inthe little system and other things on the drive need to have readers. Hmm I wander if nvda could be used for such a thing. its small, and fast. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. I had this idea in a dream, that you would hit either left, right, or down arrow for left, right or middle sounds. It is called Shoot Da Me and is ready for public beta (Stable). Here is a quick list of features right now for Public Beta 1: ° Main Menu ° 20 Levels, gets faster each level ° Unlimited Support ° Using DirectInput 8 ° Score and Health ° Sapi and Sounds All of my beta testers have not gone up to level 20, only 12. It is very challenging. The game will be available tonight at 11:59 PM EST, technically October 31, 2007 or Halloween. The game is at www.rsgames.co.nr, we had to move again, 789mb is having problems, but everything is under control. Please, from now on, only use www.rsgames.co.nr. On that site, you may download Shoot Da Me Public Beta 1 (Stable) tonight. It is stable, and it really fun, unlike GSV. I highly recommend you try it, several people cannot wait for it. It will be in .ZIP or .RAR, on SendSpace, YouSentIt and My Computer. If you want more information on the server for my computer, please go to www.rsgames.co.nr and find the link about the Server. This is only Public Beta and includes all features above, so have fun. Features in the Future: ° Score Posting ° Trophies ° Unlockables ° Mini and Bonus Games ° Difficulty Levels ° Dialog (Enemy Interaction) Thank You and I hope you finally enjoy an RS Games Game! Your Fellow Gamer, Ryan Smith /RS Games Tip of the Day: RS Games Games use the default voice set for Sapi. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 - was: new directx 9
Hi Shaun, The problem here is that based on what I have read over the last couple of days Microsoft will no longer be upgrading Managed DirectX. Auggest 2007 is the last version of Managed DirectX available for development. November's Managed DirectX runtime libraries are exactly the same as Auggest 2007. The November SDK has removed the Managed DirectX development from the package which means USA Games is stuck with Auggest 2007 DirectX or is forced to convert to XNA. At the moment converting Monty to XNA is not an option.I am to close to release to rewrite the games Audio, Input, and storage engine. shaun everiss wrote: Well tech is always changing tom. I say though as long as they keep releasing updates to things I wouldn't bother to much although keep going foreward where ever possible. ie6 is an example. Everyone should use ie7 aparently but there are still updates for ie6 being released. Guess what? Think I will keep it for a bit but I will go foreward at some point. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Jim's NFL Football.
Hi Jim, No problem for the suggestion. I've got one more, I don't know how much work it'd be.. It'd be nice to know how far of a field goal you're attempting. Maybe have the distance read, and then hit y if you want to proceed with the kick, or N if you don't think you'll make it. Not sure how hard that would be, but just another thought.
