Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios

2010-01-12 Thread Bryan Peterson
The problem with what you want is that most accessible game developers are
one to two man operations. So programming a truly great game like what you
describe would take years, quite literally.

Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.

Flaming X.

I personally want to see an rpg done similar to ff7. I want a great
storyline, good battle system, and innovative ways of setting up your
characters. I'm a huge rpg fan, but most rpgs are made for sighted
individuals. And for me being a console gamer, 3d is the only way to go. I
mean, the accessible games are cool, and me being totally blind it's cool
to learn about them, but I grew up without a computer and with a
playstation instead. I've played every fighting game under the sun pretty
much, and lots of the wrestling games too. So, for me, although being a
completely accessible game would be cool for a fighting game, they've
pretty much covered it already in the sighted world without even realizing
it lol, at least with some games. Some might have taken some memorization
of menus, but dragonball Z budokai tenkaichi 3 is quite accessible with
spoken menu options with the characters from the show doing the speaking.
Plus it also has a 3d grid on which you fight on, It's quite fun, I even
played it on the wii and the online section is even completely accessible.
So, I want more rpgs!!! Xeno gears, final fantasy ra ra ra.

One comment Mike.

sinse there is! only one audio rpg thus far, and only in beta phase,
how can you find rpgs boring?

if your judging the entire rpg genre by online text affairs, you've
only got the tip of the iceberg there, and the very limited, often pvp
focused, and not necessarily well designed tip at that.

Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] Off topic wayfinder access under threat. Please read

2010-01-12 Thread Darren Harris
Greetings all,

I do apologize for this cross posting but I feel that it is necessary.

I don't know how many of you have herd but the wayfinder access gps solution
for simbion based mobile phones is no longer available. Vodafone who own the
rights to wayfinder products have pulled the plug on it completely. They
have discontinued the entire wayfinder product line effectively in order to
create their own package. Which we believe is going to be completely
inaccessible to blind people.

Considering how accessible wayfinder access is to use as a product, we feel
that this is unacceptable action to be undertaken.

If you are on facebook, then I have created a group called (save wayfinder
action group). The purpose of this group is to bring a dedicated group of
people together so that we can constructively build a case in favour of
keeping access going as a product.

If you think and believe as we do that this product should be saved, then
please come and join in and help to build a case for this product.

It's not often that we come across a product that is in the adaptive market
and that is as cheap comparatively as access.

Please spread the word on other mailing lists as this is important.
Specifically the various phone and technology lists that there are out there
and anybody else who you think may benefit from this.

Thank you for your attention.

 Greetings all,

I do apologize for this cross posting but I feel that it is
 necessary.

I don't know how many of you have herd but the wayfinder access gps
solution for simbion based mobile phones is no longer available.
 Vodafone who own the
rights to wayfinder products have pulled the plug on it completely. They
have discontinued the entire wayfinder product line effectively in order
 to
create their own package. Which we believe is going to be completely
 inaccessible to blind people.

Considering how accessible wayfinder access is to use as a product,
we feel that this is unacceptable action to be undertaken.

If you are on facebook, then I have created a group called (save
wayfinder action group). The purpose of this group is to bring a
dedicated group of people together so that we can constructively
build a case in favour of keeping access going as a product.

If you think and believe as we do that this product should be saved,
then please come and join in and help to build a case for this
 product.

It's not often that we come across a product that is in the adaptive
market and that is as cheap comparatively as access.

Please spread the word on other mailing lists as this is important.
Specifically the various phone and technology lists that there are
out there and anybody else who you think may benefit from this.

 Thank you for your attention.

What I don't like about the game is the fact enemies seem to hit randomly
with no way for the player to dodge regardless of distance. this makes it
impossible to beat the game on expert since eventually the damage taken and
sheer enemy numbers will kill the player. has anyone beat the game on

2010-01-12 Thread Scott Chesworth
Surely a more sensible move would be to gather support and impress
upon Vodafone the need for them to build access into the replacement
product from the ground up? In my experience, whatever reasons
they've got for dropping the line will be many and varied and more
importantly won't be swayed by us. Plus, should any sort of national
press get hold of this, it seems like a much more reasonable request
and gives us the image of being keen to move forward rather than the
usual one where we're moaning about change. Considering Wayfinder
Access has always cost more than the mainstream version for no real
reason, the prospect of Voda's solution being accessible out of the
box seems more attractive to me.

Hi Hayden,
The game is very challenging. However, tonight I sneakily took advantage
of an internal game feature. No decompiling, disassembly, memory hacking
or cheat codes involved.
If you need help let me know and I will try and explain it to the best
of my abilities.

other action title. It is, however, an interesting topic and I'd be open for
suggestions on how to address this. There are a few major issues that I can
see:

1. Anticipating attacks. In a sighted game you are obviously able to see a
little beforehand if an enemy is about to attack you and so you are able to
dodge it. However it is not so easy to illustrate this in audio for two
reasons. First, you'd have to have a very clear sound that could be heard
over all the other noises in the game, and this might detract a little from
the smoothness of the experience. Second, you'd have to slow attacks down
enough as to give the player a fair chance to block them and this would
require at least 100 milliseconds at a bare minimum which would slow game
play down significantly.

2. Type of dodging. As I see it, there are two ways of doing this. Either
you have it so that a blocking action is automatically performed if you
attack with your current weapon in whatever direction the enemy is coming
from, there by dodging their offense. This could be problematic though if
the user is swinging a fist, for instance, as that wouldn't be able to dodge
a bite from a wolf or bear very well. Of course one could argue that this is
part of the challenge of the game (e.g. picking the right weapon to dodge
with), but I am not sure. The other alternative is to have a separate key
combination for blocking, but then the question is - is it realistic to
assume that the user will be able to jump that fast over the keyboard as to
be able to quickly dodge and attack at the sort of speed that an advanced
difficulty level would require for instance?

These are just a few spontaneous thoughts that popped into my head. What are
your opinions?

Re: [Audyssey] my Q9 complaints was Re: Q9, heeeeeelp!

2010-01-12 Thread dark

Hi Philip.

As I was saying to Thomas regarding mysteries of the ancients earlier, I
really do think more could be done in terms of audio games and attack
avoidence, and using methods which wouldn't be too radical.

Blocking or using a weapon to parry an attack, is one idea. While obviously
this would mean shortening the attack sounds, i don't believe it would slow
down the game too much, afterall considder the speed of games like
boppit in which you are essentially reacting to a single short sound.

You could then employ several weapons to block or parry, as has been
done in games like super castlevania in which your magic vampire killer whip
could be placed in any direction to block different attacks (including
magical projectile attacks).

While necessity to listen out for blocking noises is obviously a point,
this would also encourage players to be more cautious about engaging many
enemies at once.

Another possible method might be attack avoidence. The Rinos in Q9 run along
the floor and require jumping. Suppose however you use a similar
mechanic, swiftly panning left/right audio which the player must jump,
to create stationary cannons on the ground.

Similar cannons could be added in the air (perhaps with higher pitched
sounds), rather the way the bats currently function.

Other enemies, like the bats, may attempt to get above you and drop
projectiles onto you, making it necessary to be on the lookout for them.

Another interesting idea might be projectiles which go up in an arc, and
then down.

Attacks in many of the side scrolling games from the 80's and 90's were not
actually too fast, and I believe audio versions would not need to be
particularly slow, afterall alien outback showed extremely good methods
of positioning attacking enemies vertically, no reason why it couldn't
be done horrizontally.

Also, on a more basic front, there is of course no reason to give the
enemies as much range as the player. In many graphical games, enemies
attacked simply by contacting the player, and it was the player job not to
let them get too close, easier said then done with multiple enemies.
Others, had attacks which could vary in range from well outside the players'
attack range, to none at all.

If a creature had for instance a shorter range than the player, but did
lots of damage, the player would need to employ a hit and run type of
stratogy, thus making avoiding attacks far more interesting than simply
hammering away and hopin not to be damaged.

Just some thoughts.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

2010-01-12 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Dark,

Certainly a few things for me to think about, though as I have never played
any games for the sighted it is a little hard for me to relate to them in
practise. I follow your theories without any difficulty, but am still not
quite clear on how to do this with audio. For instance, what sort of sound
would a wolf make before it attacks? And another problem with that is, do we
really want to cut the wolf growling loop off at an arbitrary point in time?
This is fine if you can cover it with a loud hitting sound like when your
club makes contact, but if you do it to warn about an attack there would not
be any covering and you would get a horrible choppy sound in many instances.
of course one could use a second sound layer and use some sort of swinging
noise on top of the growl, but this also detracts a bit from the
authentisity. Not that Q9 is at all realistic in itself; it definitely is
not, but I'm speaking in more general terms here just with a wolf and a club
as the primary examples.

Re: [Audyssey] my Q9 complaints was Re: Q9, heeeeeelp!

Hi Philip.

Usually, even in graphical games wolves would not telegraph their attacks
too much, other than perhaps occasionally jumping or pouncing towards
the player, - maybe a jumping sound to indicate the start of the pounce?

For most graphical games though, it's not enemies like wolves that would
usually have heavily teligraphed attacks, such things are usually reserved
for realistic, - or at least semi-realistic monsters, such as
poison spitting snakes.

In ghouls and ghosts for instance, the wolves simply jump towards the
player, however there are also large bone pillars dropping bones
intermitantly, demons who rise up from the ground and throw a fireball,
and pulsating spaws which swell up then explode, sending projectiles around
the area.

ghouls -n- ghosts though, is heavily based on simply standing in the right
spot at the right time, in fact the game plays quite slowly (probably
slower than Q9), though the placement and exactitude of the jumps and
shots required make it one of the hardest games of all time, quite
often in fact it's placement, not speed which is difficult.

I don't use way finder but if its gona be intigrated then I'm all for it.
vodaphone do actually do accessability, they do try to have features for us.
At any rate from the message I got wayfinder was ended so a new system could be
put in to sertain phones.
there was no mention about it not being accessible or not though.
If this system could become part of some stuff then well I'm all for it.
Also don't forget for sertain blind orgs and other places vodaphone are funding
part of talks standard licence, at least here in nz they are.
At any rate its early days yet.
If vodaphone get asked if accessibility can be put in or whatever I am sure
they will respond if there is interest.
It all looks good to me.
Wayfinder is aparently depending what you read their official post says no new
development is going on.
but they are still selling.
the torknav article I got on another list says the exact oposite.
Now I get this view.
The truth we don't know the whole story yet.
At 08:41 a.m. 13/01/2010, you wrote:
Surely a more sensible move would be to gather support and impress

press get hold of this, it seems like a much more reasonable request
and gives us the image of being keen to move forward rather than the
usual one where we're moaning about change. Considering Wayfinder
Access has always cost more than the mainstream version for no real
reason, the prospect of Voda's solution being accessible out of the
box seems more attractive to me.

 Thank you for your attention.

but my question still stands. has anyone beaten this difficulty? if so I'd
like to hear your strategy. if the difficulty level can't be beaten, then
it's quite clear that there's a problem. I don't mind difficult games, but
this seems to be impossible without some dodging strategy involved so as not
to get beaten to a pulp by 30 enemies simultaneously. you say you need to be
a more skilled player, but my point is how could you possibly be more
skilled when all that's basically happening is you get hit randomly and
there's nothing you can do about it? seems more like luck to me than skill.
now if there was some timing involved, or perhaps a pattern to enemies
attacks, then it would be skill. as it stands now you can't even run away
from enemies, because they run faster than the player and eventually
overwhelm you.

The expert level is designed to not be easily beaten. I think you would
use

the same strategies as on other levels, but must be a more skillful player
to beat the more difficult levels. I would leave the game just as it is.
Do not make it easier to win, as this would, in my opinion, take away some
of the replay value. If it isn't challenging, would you continue playing?

Hi Yohandy,

I believe that this is a problem that exists in almost every audio game
available today including Shades of Doom, Super Liam, Q9, Mysteries of the
Ancients I believe though am not 100 % sure on this, and pretty much any
other action title. It is, however, an interesting topic and I'd be open
for
suggestions on how to address this. There are a few major issues that I
can

see:

1. Anticipating attacks. In a sighted game you are obviously able to see a
little beforehand if an enemy is about to attack you and so you are able
to

dodge it. However it is not so easy to illustrate this in audio for two
reasons. First, you'd have to have a very clear sound that could be heard
over all the other noises in the game, and this might detract a little
from

the smoothness of the experience.

This could be problematic though if
the user is swinging a fist, for instance, as that wouldn't be able to
dodge
a bite from a wolf or bear very well. Of course one could argue that this
is

part of the challenge of the game (e.g. picking the right weapon to dodge
with), but I am not sure. The other alternative is to have a separate key
combination for blocking, but then the question is - is it realistic to
assume that the user will be able to jump that fast over the keyboard as
to

be able to quickly dodge and attack at the sort of speed that an advanced
difficulty level would require for instance?

These are just a few spontaneous thoughts that popped into my head. What
are

your opinions?

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

What I don't like about the game is the fact enemies seem to hit randomly
with no way for the player to dodge regardless of distance. this makes it
impossible to beat the game on expert since eventually the damage taken
and
sheer enemy numbers will kill the player. has anyone beat the game on
expert, and if so did you find out a strategy?

Hi there.

Well, I was just about to send a message with instructions on how to use
simutronics games with vipmud, since I posted about this a few months ago.

Unfortunately, I seem to no longer have a play.net account, which is where
dragonrealms and gemstone IV are located! grin

But anyway, here is a copy of a message I sent to the list regarding
logging

into gemstone IV with vipmud. I know the question is regarding
dragonrealms, but I am sure that other than the difference in host names,
the instructions would be the same.

The below message talks about logging into the website as if you were
going to login with the Wizard client. What you will want to do though is
download the .sal file that comes up when you click on the go play link.
The only way I was able to download this .sal file without Internet
explorer trying to launch the wizard front end, was to use fire fox. That
is why in the below message, I refer to firefox. You could probably stop
the wizard frontend from launching if you disable active X for the
dragonrealms.net site.

Use the below at your own risk. Beings that it is the Christmas Holiday,
I will be away from my computer for most of the next few days.

I would suggest that you do a search in the play.net forums regarding
logging in with a telnet client, that was where I originally got the
instructions.

Basicly, what you will need to do is get the userKey from the .sal file of
your character. This is how simutronics keeps people from logging in for
free.

When you use vipmud to connect to whatever the host and port are, you will
not see anything when you connect. This is normal. You will need to
paste in the user key into vipmud's window and press enter. Again, you
will see or hear nothing. You then want to type FE/JAVA all in caps as
shown and press enter. You should then be good to go.

Again, this is for gemstone IV but it will work with whatever dragonrealms
uses as their host.

Rest assured, Simutronics muds including dragon realms can be played with
vipmud, at least, they could be played a few months ago. grin

Jeremy
Begin message.

Ok, I managed to just get into gemstone iv with VipMud. What I had to do
was use firefox to log into my account. When I clicked the go play
button,

a page came up saying that if my browser didn't launch using active x to
click here. When I did, firefox brought a file save dialog with my
character's .sal file, ie, grogrond.sal. I then saved it to disc, and
opened it in notepad, and copied the key to the clipboard, and used the
host

of prime.gs4.game.play.net and the port of 4900 entered into the host and
port sections in vipMud. Then, I pasted the key from the clipboard and
hit

enter. I then typed FE/JAVA and hit enter. And I am now in!

Hi Bryce,

I used to play Dragon Realms. I think it's the best mud there is, but I
found the frustration of using ZMud too much and eventually gave it up.
I'm not sure what to tell you: Dragon Realms scrolls by as fast as any
other mud on the Net. I knhow it's a dumb suggestion, but I suppose you
could slow your voice rate down some. That would give you greater
comprehensibility but of course you would be lagging behind whatever the
mobs are doing. The only really bright thing I can tell you is that the
maker of VIP Mud, the mud client designed especially for blind players,
is
considering adding Simutronics support in the next version. You might
try

writing to him. He's at GMAGames and can be reached through the contact
