Re: [Audyssey] Panning Weapon Sounds in MOTA
Hi Jim, Smile. You are right to a certain point. There are times when I would like the public's opinion such as now when I wanted to know if people would like the weapon sounds panned or not, and there are times when I don't. Unfortunately, there is no way for a potential customer to know when is a good time to offer an opinion and when isn't. Anyway, my rant is over. i have nothing more to say on this subject and I'd just assume to let things be. As to everyone I'm sorry if I sounded a bit harsh the last couple of days. I was letting my emotions getting the better of me and I took it out here rather than taking it somewhere else. [Audyssey] Important MOTA News
Hello everyone, In light of a few things I said on the Audyssey mailing list over the past couple days or so I’ve done a lot of thinking about the future of Mysteries of the Ancients. It is no secret I’ve never been fully satisfied about it being a side-scroller, and it is also no secret I promised the community a side-scroller in place of Montezuma’s Revenge. So I thought about the problem, and I have decided upon a course of action that I believe not only will satisfy everyone involved it might actually increase the number of sales for this title too. So what’s the plan? Well, the plan is really quite simple. Beginning with beta 13 or beta 14 I’m going to offer two different downloadable versions of Mysteries of the Ancients. One in the original side-scroller format all of you currently have, and an all new 3d first-person version more like what I had originally planned on creating to begin with. This way it is up to the customer to decide which version he or she likes and can purchase either version from the USA Games store when the game is ready for sale. One of the reasons I have decided to go ahead and do this is that since MOTA beta 12 the Genesis Engine has proven itself to be fairly stable for game development now. I’ve fixed a few things here and there, updated some things, and beta 13 looks really stable. So taking that into account it really wouldn’t be that hard to go ahead and create an all new 3d first-person game using the engine as most of the functionality is already there. All of the basic functions like jumping, running, walking, etc is already in the engine. It is simply a matter of mapping the right 2d or 3d functions to the right keys. As for the game levels those would have to be redrawn for the fps version, of course, but that’s nothing compared to writing an entire engine like Genesis from scratch. I’d say within two weeks, tops, I could have a 3d fps version of the same game sitting up there on the website along side the side-scroller. So why not go ahead and do it right? The other reason is that this way will satisfy everyone including me. This allows the customer to buy and download exactly the version they want. If side-scrollers are your thing go for it. If you are like me and want a full 3d fps type format for the game that will be available too. If you want both you can buy both. The sky is the limit as they say. The only other developer I know who has tried this was Edos Interactive. Back when they released Tomb Raider Legend they released two different versions of the same game. They released a side-scroller version for mobile phones, and they also released a complete 3d third-person perspective version for the Play Station and PC. I’m sure they did it for different reasons, but the idea is that this has been done before, and apparently the marketing ploy worked. People purchased both because they could have the full 3d version on their PC and then take the mobile version of the game with them on their mobile to play on their coffee break. It was a pretty good idea as far as I am conserned and so I've decided to follow in their footsteps. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I know this is surprising even for me. However, I think this is the best of both worlds as far as I am concerned. It is one of those cases where you can have your cake and eat it too. Re: [Audyssey] question
Hi Dark, Yeah, there is more than that floating around. At one time I had over 99 missions in my Lone Wolf directory. However, I deleted several missions and re numbered several of them so I only have the ones I like I'll never forget the one someone made where they named several ships after members of the Clinton administration. Hilary Clinton, as I remember, was the main battleship. Bill Clinton's former flings were aircraft carriers. Well, let's face it, everything about that mission was totally warped. It was both funny and totally stupid at the same time. It wasn't one I kept though. Re: [Audyssey] Important MOTA News
Hi Bryan, Well, I really couldn't have done this any sooner as the engine itself had been going through various writes and rewrites so that anything i created would have constantly been in flux and needed to be updated. However, as it happens since I've made all the major choices for the 1.0 version of the Genesis Engine it is more or less stable enough to begin creating games with. If anything pops up such as one of the 3d functions don't work write I can go ahead and fix it, but the core of the engine is there and it is more or less ready to use now. I don't intend to rewrite the engine in some other language like Visual Basic, Java, whatever tomorrow so anything I create with it now will use the common core. Any changes to the engine should carry over to the game unless it happens to be a bug in the main source file which is where the game specific code goes. Which of course shouldn't be a problem since I have plenty of working code I can copy right over from the side-scroller version of the game and modify as needed. That's the other reason I couldn't do it before. I didn't have a tun of working, heavily tested code, I couldn't copy and paste directly into a new project and start using it such as the game menus or the NewLevel() function which sets all the object properties, etc. This way I can just copy it from one main source file directly into the next and modify accordingly. Re: [Audyssey] Important MOTA News
There is one dimentions difference ;D. Thus in the current version of mota you can move left and right and up and down. A 3D game would work more like audio quake, you could move in any and all directions, up down, forward back, left right etc as in something liek audio quake with the stairs and multiple levels. To understand the difference more formally, imagine pushing a piece of paper on the surface of a table. you can move it only up down left or right without taking it off the table, ie, only in two dimentions. Now, imagine picking the paper up, you can move it all the same ways as before, but also up and down in the air, ie, in 3 dementions. this is the basic idea. Hope this explains things. Depending upon how much into some of the crazier areas of physics and abstract mathematics you want to go there are suggestions for various other dementions(one theory I heard even had 26!), but for game developement 3 is enough, well four counting time ;D. Re: [Audyssey] Important MOTA News
Hi Dark, Oh, its going to essentially be the same game. It will have the same story, same enemies, traps, puzzles, whatever. I could even make the 3d levels similar to there 2d counterparts simply by taking the same levels and simply redrawing each room as a true 3d object complete with four walls, a floor, and a celing. Instead of a 2d room that is say 20 by 8 I could just redraw that room to be 20 by 20 by 8 making it 3d. In other words instead of just length and height each room will have a length, width, and height attribute. The essential difference between the two versions is going to be 3d specific features that you couldn't get in a 2d only game. For example, obviously since the fps version is in 3d that offers you a lot more freedom of movement. Instead of just being able to walk left and right as well as climb up and down on ropes and things the fps version will allow you to move foward, backward, left, right as well as climb up and down on ropes, ladders, staircases, whatever. As I said far more freedom of movement. Targeting will also be a bit different than you are use too. Since we are talking about a truely 3d environment that means aiming your weapons will be a bit trickier since the game will have to calculate a true 3d vector from the player character to the target. For that reason you may have to use the page up key to raise your weapon to target a flying harpy, or use the page down key to lower your weapon in order to target an enemy monster lower to the ground. This is a feature of several mainstream games, and will be quite new to many accessible gamers I think, but it is more realistic and shouldn't be too hard to get use to. As far as any other differences such as weather or not I'll keep the random monsters and items I haven't decided. As I said a couple of days ago there are pros and cons with both. If I keep it the games will definitely be different from game to game which is good. If I get rid of it then I have to figure out where to put everything and rebalance the game which could be time consuming. So I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. In regards to more Tomb Hunter games I definitely plan on it. However, the 3d fps game isn't going to be based on any of the stories I am creating for Tomb Hunter II and so forth. For one thing I haven't purchased all the sounds I need for Tomb Hunter II, and nor would I create two different games seeing as the fps version is merely going to be Mysteries of the Ancients done my way and the side-scroller is the 2d version many people wanted to replace Montezuma's Revenge. Re: [Audyssey] Important MOTA News
Hi Muhammed, Well, from a geometric point of view there is a considerable difference between 2d and 3d. The best way to think of this is what's the difference between a 2d shape like a square and a 3d shape like a cube? Well, a square only has four sides. It has a left, right, top, and bottom side. However, it is completely flat. A cube on the other hand has a total of six sides. It has a left, right, front, back, top, and a bottom side. Therefore it is a true 3d object. When we talk about 2d verses 3d with a game like MOTA we are talking about how the level is presented. a 2d room only has two walls, a floor and a celing, and therefore only has four possible directions of movement like left, right, up, or down. A 3d room however is a cube with four walls, a floor, and a celing and offers six major directions of movement like left, right, forward, backward, up, or down plus everything in between. Since the real world happens to be in 3d a game that uses 3d levels would obviously be more natural for a gamer and be much more realistic. It allows for a lot more possibilities not only in movement but in drawing the levels more like they would be in real life. Does that make sense? Cheers! So I thought about the problem, and I have decided upon a course of action that I believe not only will satisfy everyone involved it might actually increase the number of sales for this title too. First of all it's MOTA, M O T A, not M O D A. It's an acronym for Mysteries of the Ancients. As for your jumps, make sure you don't have a drawn weapon when you try to jump, otherwise the weight will pull you off balance. Hit Control+W to hear whether your current weapon is drawn. If it is, hit W again to put it away. Then you should be able to successfully make the jump. I suppose I'll find out when the game comes out, but how will you be able to determine if an enemy is, say northwest or southeast of you but also 4 feet above or below you? Also, might a flying enemy rise or lower it's flight as it attacks, making it harder to locate during flight? - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2010 12:04 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Important MOTA News Hi Dark, Oh, its going to essentially be the same game. Once there's a FPS version, I'll be among the first to get into it. No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't. Johnny ST Tai LIVE AND WALK WITH CONFIDENCE. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Panning Weapon Sounds in MOTA
Hi Muhammed, Well of course Thomas has the right to ask for comments, suggestions etc about MOTA. The only reason that I said anything is that every time that he asks he gets some people saying right and others saying left, some saying up and others saying down etc etc. And some times he gets frustrated with this. So I just suggested that to stop the frustration, stop asking. That's it. BFN - Original Message - Jim, he has the right to ask really. The reason he asks is that so he doesn't go in the wrong direction and and peoples apinyins. And rating on the plans. My audio games for the blind group. Then of course you could get on to games that you would like to create and hopefully those games will be great games that allot of people like and buy and of course make you happy to create and play.
