Hello,

Just because one app doesn't work has no bearing on whether any other 
apps will or will not work. It is just like programs on the PC, but the 
chances are actually better that the app will work.


I haven't tried any of the fighting fantasy apps, but I downloaded a 
Frotz program called

frotz
from the app store last night. It is over 60 mb (if memory serves), and 
has a very large number of the Z games in it already. It is fully 
accessible, and it is free.

Hi Ian.

the malinch games are just standard inform zcode games, so whatever mac 
interpreter plays those will work with them.


I believe Phil has a link to a mac if interpreter in his mac games list that 
will.

[Audyssey] MOTA16 impressions

Hi Tom and all,
So I finally find time to install Beta 16 of MOTA, and what an impressive list 
of changes. Spikes, fires and chasms all seem to have warning ledges now,
which I really like. The only problems I have come across so far are:
Sometimes when you press Alt plus an arrow key to jump, it interferes with some 
sort of menu. Though I don't have a screenreader loaded at the time, my
Windows sound scheme makes a sound when any sort of menu pops up, and it was 
making that click every time I walked. As soon as I pressed Alt again, the
menus disappeared. A minor inconvenience, but I thought it should be noted.
The other thing is, I was viewing a room and saw a small chasm on level 2. 
Therefore I jumped when I heard the crumbling ledge and subsequently got killed.
This makes me think that either it was supposed to be a large chasm, or the 
length of this particular chasm meant I couldn't jump over it for some reason.
Other than that, its performance has greatly improved since the last version I 
tried, and I am very impressed with the new sounds. The new layout confused
me for a while, but that I shall get used to in time. The one thing I will ask 
is, what happened to the water? I loved swimming past that waterfall. Heheh.

I've been testing tdv since near may and have loved it and have done some of
the music for it.  I don'#t know if i can tell you what i've done but after
the game's released i probably can.

Hi Damien,

Hmmm...I guess you haven't played for a while as most of the changes
you mentioned were added in earlier releases. For example, the water
on level 1. I took that out and moved it to a later level because I
wanted to do more with it such as be able to swim underwater, and I
couldn't make that kind of change to level 1 without completely
recreating the entire level from scratch.

As for the alt key that is an annoying problem do to Windows. When you
press it it activates the little context menu at the corner of the
screen sometimes and I've been trying to figure out how to keep it
from doing that without disabling the pulldown menus altogether.

Odd, because I didn't encounter any menu issues. As for the casm are you 
sure you had your weapon holstered, because even a small chasm will be 
unjumpable if you have a drawn weapon.

Yes, you only get one life as the game is sort of like an FPS game in
a side-scroller format. However, keep in mind that is balanced by the
fact that the full version allows you to save your game, actually
multiple games, so you can setup checkpoints to restore from. The
arcade mode has been gone for ages. It has been gone for a year or
more.

Although, I have been asked several times to put the arcade mode back
in. As i have not decided what to do about that I've let it stand as
is for the time being.

Hi Liam,

Smile. You can't save because the game is in demo mode. The save and
load game feature is only available in the full version. Remember a
demo is merely a demo. To get all the good stuff like mor levels,
load/save games, etc you need the full version.

It would be nice if you'd allow people to save even if it's the demo.  Got a
quarter way through the level and died after running out of bullets. Very
frustrating.

Smile. You can't save because the game is in demo mode. The save and load
game feature is only available in the full version. Remember a demo is
merely a demo. To get all the good stuff like mor levels, load/save games,
etc you need the full version.

Judging by what david's done in the past yes.

While he's not a frequent contributor to the list, he certainly does send 
E-mails when he makes an update or releases a new game.


Bare in mind though, that sinse Gma makes complex games, updates don't 
happen that often, roughly at a wrate of one new games per 18 months or so.


This isn't a cryticism, just a note that if you haven't heard anything from 
Gma this is probably because there is nothing new to here as yet.

I don't actually need to save my game. Use the view command or stuff like 
that, and you should be fign. Its also about your logic. If you have any 
heeling potions, just drink them. Also, I don't think Thomas should put the 
saves games feature yet in the demo because the game is nearly out. I don't 
no when or which release it is going to be fully out, but I am sure that the 
game is nearly finished. Also, remember that if I'm correct, every game 
developer has their stile of making a game.

Yes, you only get one life as the game is sort of like an FPS game in a
side-scroller format. However, keep in mind that is balanced by the fact
that the full version allows you to save your game, actually multiple 
games,
so you can setup checkpoints to restore from. The arcade mode has been 
gone

for ages. It has been gone for a year or more.

Although, I have been asked several times to put the arcade mode back in. 
As

i have not decided what to do about that I've let it stand as is for the
time being.

availability of Mysteries of the Ancients beta 16. This release marks a
major change in the development process, and we now have officially 
branched

For Windows users we have rolled the development back to beta 13, and have
upgraded the old Windos engine so that it is current with the 
cross-platform

version for Mac OS and Linux. The Windows release once again relies on
Microsoft DirectX and PB Streemway for input and sound. It also depends on
Windows specific APIs such as the Win32 API and Visual C++ 2008 runtime as
did beta 13 and earlier versions.

This release resolves a number of issues for Windows users such as the 
blue

screen issue on exit, improves system performance, improves input support,

Hi Liam,

Yes, you only get one life as the game is sort of like an FPS game in a
side-scroller format. However, keep in mind that is balanced by the fact
that the full version allows you to save your game, actually multiple 
games,
so you can setup checkpoints to restore from. The arcade mode has been 
gone

for ages. It has been gone for a year or more.

Although, I have been asked several times to put the arcade mode back in. 
As

i have not decided what to do about that I've let it stand as is for the
time being.

Oh, I bet. Wel,i have some good news for you on that score. Since
Christmas is just around the corner, so to speak, we are now looking
at adding the game registration system, new levels, etc in beta 17.
Basically, over the course of the next two months are goal is to work
towards wrapping this game up, and getting on to our next project. As
the engine is more or less stable at this point we are in the final
stages of MOTA development.

Smile. You can't save because the game is in demo mode. The save and
load game feature is only available in the full version. Remember a
demo is merely a demo. To get all the good stuff like mor levels,
load/save games, etc you need the full version.

Heck, it's not just the acid pits that whack off half your health. Pretty 
much every enemy in the game does this. And it doesn't help that you can't 
carry med kits with you. I gave up on that game years ago. I'm all for more 
challenging games but I think they took Technoshock way too far.

That's a two-sided coin. On one hand I can see how you can be a bit
exasperated with that (like I said, I do think Tarzan Junior is just a

games' strengths.

I got through easy on the day I bought it (yes, I bought it before it

freeware), and was a trifle disappointed, but normal took me a degree

practice to beat and I've never done it on insane.

for my money, this is actually how difficulties should be, so once you
raise the difficulty, you need to raise your game to match.

I also noticed philip seems to carry this on in his other games as well,
in fact generally I'd say formulating difficulty levels seems to be one
of



philip's major strengths.

You should actually give it a try especially as it's free, you can get

from Tom's free games section.

it was also produced by philip bennifall back when he was running pb
games,
and has various cool features like cut scenes and multiple weapons,
pluss
some rather fun bosses and obstacles.

in fact I think my only major problem with the game is that while the
side
scrolling levels are rather fun, there are also none side scrolling
levels
which can vary in quality.

one in particular is especially awsome (I'm thinking of the torgon
battle
here), but a couple of the others are rather less interesting.

Stil, the game has far more good levels than bad ones imho.

[Audyssey] jumping form 11 to 1 in MOTA

Hi Thomas,
Was there ever a sound when jumping from 11 to 1?
I know you had a splash sound when the water was there so could you use the 
same function to play an Ooff sound when hitting the ground?
I find this technique useful in level2 where there is a rope and a creature 
below you. Instead of holstering my weapon and jumping onto the rope then 
climbing down and jumping off and having to pull out my weapon, I just jump 
with the weapon in hand and am able to shoot much faster.

at adding the game registration system, new levels, etc in beta 17.
Basically, over the course of the next two months are goal is to work
towards wrapping this game up, and getting on to our next project. As
the engine is more or less stable at this point we are in the final
stages of MOTA development.

Smile. You can't save because the game is in demo mode. The save and
load game feature is only available in the full version. Remember a
demo is merely a demo. To get all the good stuff like mor levels,
load/save games, etc you need the full version.

I haven't seen any water or spikes etc. I've only seen 1 level and only up to 
room 20.
Am I missing anything?

Obviously you haven't played through it completely or you'd have been 
through level two. My assumption is that you're not exploring everywhere you 
can. As for the water it was removed from the current build because Thomas 
wanted to do more with it than he probably could have, such as have you swim 
underwater to find treasure and things.

Speaking of bugs, I found one last night when playing Mota. It was early in
level 2, and I was doing some rapid jumping. I hit a wall and got a runtime
error 6025 Pure virtual function call at which point the game exited.

[Audyssey] guarding with a sword in Mota

Hi Tom... just curious. I remember having this discussion a while 
back... but I'm wondering if it would be possible to have the ability 
to guard attacks from other swords with the sword? Not so exaggerated 
as to be able to block bullets, but if your enemy was wielding a 
sword or axe, would it be possible to have some kind of guard of 
blocking feature? I'm just thinking about you mentioning a sword duel 
with in the users guide.. and it seems like blocking in a duel makes 
a lot of sense. grins. Sorry to ask again, just curious.

You sure are, even in beta 15.  The flooded room was removed quite some time 
ago, and there is a second level you haven't discovered a way into.  Give

Shrug. I have never seen an error like that. My guess is somehow you
managed to get out of bounds of the array and crashed the game
somehow. Where exactly were you on level 2 when it crashed. I need to
know in order to try and reproduce this bug.

Hi Tom and all,
So I finally find time to install Beta 16 of MOTA, and what an impressive
list of changes. Spikes, fires and chasms all seem to have warning ledges
now,
which I really like. The only problems I have come across so far are:
Sometimes when you press Alt plus an arrow key to jump, it interferes with
some sort of menu. Though I don't have a screenreader loaded at the time, my
Windows sound scheme makes a sound when any sort of menu pops up, and it was
making that click every time I walked. As soon as I pressed Alt again, the
menus disappeared. A minor inconvenience, but I thought it should be noted.
The other thing is, I was viewing a room and saw a small chasm on level 2.
Therefore I jumped when I heard the crumbling ledge and subsequently got
killed.
This makes me think that either it was supposed to be a large chasm, or the
length of this particular chasm meant I couldn't jump over it for some
reason.
Other than that, its performance has greatly improved since the last version
I tried, and I am very impressed with the new sounds. The new layout
confused
me for a while, but that I shall get used to in time. The one thing I will
ask is, what happened to the water? I loved swimming past that waterfall.

level 1 not 20 so there are two rooms you missed. Then, there is level
2, which is also in the demo, which you havent' even explored yet.

The spikes aren't until level 2. Since you haven't made it to level 2
yet you obviously won't see them.

As for the water I moved that from level 1 to level 3, and made a lot
of changes so you can swim underwater to find treasure and things like
that.

I'm not sure off the top of my head.However, at the current exchange
rate between the dollar and the British pound I'd imagine it would not
be any more than 30 pounds. Maybe even less the way the dollar is
rapidly going down in value thanks to poor economic polacies pushed by
the U.S. government.

Hi Phil,

No, there never was a sound from jumping from a ledge at say (30, 11)
to something like (30, 1) because it was all just a part of the jump
code. I'd have to rewrite the code for the jump code to take into
account the distance jumped to make Angela grunt etc. It is something
to put in the idea box, but honestly I'm moving on to bigger things
right now.

As far as jumping and landing in water that is a totally different
issue than what you are proposing. The entire level is stored in one
big array which means if I quary the array and the next (x, y, z)
coordinate is water it loads and plays the land_Water.wav sound.  In
order to load a grunt when jumping the same distance I'd have to keep
track of how far Angela has jumped and grunt if it is say larger than
5 or something like that. I can do it, but have to spend time away
from other things to add it.

I understand, it would be nice to have a jumping down to the room below 
sound but not that important.
It does bring up another way of attack, but would require you to hear sounds 
in another room before entering it.
That is the only thing that I would wish if possible, as you open a door you 
would hear if any creature was in the room before entering it.
If you could add this, then there would be the possibility of landing on a 
creature.

For example,
You are on a ledge with a rope and you hear a creature prowling below you.
You time your leap and land on it and smash it with your boots.
Something to think about.

I understand, it would be nice to have a jumping down to the room below 
sound but not that important.
It does bring up another way of attack, but would require you to hear 
sounds in another room before entering it.
That is the only thing that I would wish if possible, as you open a door 
you would hear if any creature was in the room before entering it.
If you could add this, then there would be the possibility of landing on a 
creature.

For example,
You are on a ledge with a rope and you hear a creature prowling below you.
You time your leap and land on it and smash it with your boots.
Something to think about.

Hi Charles,

Well, at this point the only monsters that can really take advantage
of the 3d levels is the harpies as they can and do fly around the room
above you. Skeletons can't jump as they would break apart, and I've
never seen a zomby jump or show any good reflexes in general.
Centaurs could jump pretty high since they have a body of ahorse, but
then if one landed on Angela she'd be smashed flat. That would be like
having a horse land on you.


Oh, and if you think that is bad think about a Minotaur.  Those
monsters are huge, and if one of them landed on Angela pancake would
be giving her too much credit. Lol!

One suggestion for a future change in MOTA.
Have a view direction hot key maybe control + v and would ask,
what direction?
your response could be up, down, left, or right, and the game would describe 
in a list similar to the v command what is only in that direction in the 
room you  are in, plus what is in the room next in that direction.

Hi Will,

Unfortunately, no. The 3d version is falling further and further
behind the current production release. In part becaus it took me
several months to get the cross-platform engine ready only to find it
doesn't work on Windows, and have had to roll the Windows versions
back to beta 13 and start upgrading from there. Right now I'm trying
to get the side-scroller version ready for Christmas and then once it
is done work on the 3d version.

Hi Richard,

Oh, you are missing quite a lot. first of all there are 22 rooms on
level 1 not 20 so there are two rooms you missed. Then, there is level
2, which is also in the demo, which you havent' even explored yet.

The spikes aren't until level 2. Since you haven't made it to level 2
yet you obviously won't see them.

As for the water I moved that from level 1 to level 3, and made a lot
of changes so you can swim underwater to find treasure and things like
that.

Smile. You can't save because the game is in demo mode. The save and
load game feature is only available in the full version. Remember a
demo is merely a demo. To get all the good stuff like mor levels,
load/save games, etc you need the full version.

it. There is a later level with something extremely nasty swimming
