Re: [Audyssey] little problem
What operating system, and version/build of jaws are you running? When I first switched over to windows 7, jaws 11 had issues since it thought I was changing the hardware all the time, even after just a reboot, and this also meant it kept on de-activating itself, but they fixed that in a later build of jaws 11, and haven't had issues with jaws 12 at all either. Re: [Audyssey] Problem with Daytona
Sarah I believe I can help. Use Tab to scroll through the menus, not the arrow keys. I suppose I should add in the arrows as acceptable alternatives to using Tab, I'll do that in a little while so it will be in the next release. The reason the mouse seems to be backwards is because the sound you're hearing isn't moving. It represents a beacon. As you're moving the mouse to the right you are hearing it getting farther away on your left. Imagine the beacon as being a small spot on your mouse pad and it will make more sense with how the sound changes. I hope this has helped. :) --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Problem with Daytona
Hi, sorry I don't post my problem in the audiogames forum, but I don't have an account there. I downloaded the Beta of Daytona, but it doesn't work as it should. First, I can't navigate the menues at all. All I can do is pressing the enter key, but I don't get any menue choices read out when using the arrow keys or even the mouse. Second, the mouse moves in the wrong direction! *lol* When I move the mouse to the left, the sound goes right and the other way around. But outside of the game the mouse works correctly, so I don't really know what's wrong here. *smiles* Help would be much appreciated. I like this concept of gaming very much and am eager to try it properly. *smiles* Thanks and best regards Sarah --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] The Trials of Guilder
Hi does anyone know what happened to the developer of this game? I was hunting around for other text-games and was trying to find out if this one had a soundpack. It looks good, but I don't want to just click on links all night in a browser to play a game. I can't remember the web address to The Trials of Guilder but my email bounced back, so maybe he's one of the thousands who have flown off into the etha of nevermore game development Or his email may just be having problems. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] BGT and Screen Reader API's
Hi Jim, Well, once again this is an issue that depends on the type of game the developer is attempting to create. In your games like Monopoly I certainly don't mind a Sapi voice speaking out the information because it is very dinamic and there doesn't need to be any acting in it. However, most modern first-person and third-person vidio games for the mainstream market are like interactive movies with scenes between the levels, heavy dialog, and in-game comments from the player. In cases like that you most definitely want a human actor to do the work and voice overs for the game. Can you imagine using Microsoft Anna as the voice of Mara Jade in Mysteries of the Sith? Well, it wouldn't work because Microsoft Anna etc couldn't express the same degree of emotions. There are certain in-game scenes like the one where Mara confronts Kyle in the Sith temple and it gets extremely tense. Kyle tries to talk Mara Jade into becoming his Sith apprentice, and she ends up telling him to stick it where the sun don't shine. I couldn't imagine two Sapi voices doing that scene justice. Smile. HiPhilip, Hahaha. Microsoft Anna sounding like a bank robber. Oh, now that would be a blast. It would be so aweful it would be funny. Seriously, I know exactly what you mean. back in the earlier days when working on Mysteries of the Ancients I had one of the Sapi voices doing the voice for Angela Carter as place holders until I could get an actor to do the parts. As it happened I haven't found that perfect actress yet, but it was so lame hearing this Sapi voice trying to say "watch it" in an even monotone. Like boring! Re: [Audyssey] BGT and Screen Reader API's
Hi Bryan, Well, I find that a bit unusual. Back when I started using screen readers in the 1990's the first hardware sinth I owned was a Dectalk. I fell in love with the Dectalk voice and I always felt it was hundreds of times better than the accent, Keynote, Doubletalk, and other choices at the time. Most Window-Eyes users I know love the Dectalk Access Software, and so do I. I guess I never thought anyone would willingly take Eloquence over Dectalk. Eloquence is terrible and too robotic in my book, and I always felt the Dectalk was more human sounding. In fact, I own the Linux version of Dectalk Access that works with Orca as well. Hi Jim, Well, in that way we are a lot alike. Although, I'm on facebook, am on instant messenger, etc I generally don't do that while playing games too. I tend to do one thing at a time. If I'm chatting on AIM I'm chatting on AIM. If I'm chatting on facebook I'm chatting on facebook. If I'm playing a game that's probably all I'm doing at the time. So have never really had a need to have a screen reader running while the game is running. However, I have set up the input system to disable DirectInput when the window doesn't have focus to allow those people who like to multitask too play the game and switch between other applications as well. However, personally I've never found it that big a deal. Smile. Hi Bryan, Most of the Sarah game is spoken by humans. Sarah speaks hundreds of things and the Caretaker is done by Josh. I got volunteers to be Sarah's Father and Mother, and the Sphinx, and Mrs. Honeyduke, Sir Cadagan and the 7 potion puzzle in the update. The only voices that are synthesized are the ghosts. These problems aren't an indication of bad quality drivers. It just means the screen reader has access to the keyboard at as low a level as the game and is intercepting it for it's own use. NVDA has been specifically constructed so as not to present this problem. Other screen readers pass on the keystrokes, but introduce delays as the reader attempts to do what it has been programmed to do with the arrow keys, but still passes on the orriginal functionality. A good way to get around the problem is to use something other than the arrow keys, but then if the reader is set to echo keypresses, it can be annoying if the screen reader is trying to speak a key when you have that key held down. Re: [Audyssey] BGT and Screen Reader API's
Hi Valiant, I have two problems with recorded speech for games. Well maybe three. One is that I just do not care for human speech in games. Much prefer a synthesizer. Two is the amount of time that it takes to do that for a game. Not to mention the extra code that it takes. And three is the flexibility factor. And not just the fact that you do not want to change the speech rate, but even more so the ability to speak anything in the game. You know like people would not have been able to create a hundred or so boards for my monopoly game, or hundreds of golf courses for my golf game. And of course all of my games that ask you to input your name for use in the game or for the record. BFN Jim Danger! well I usually leave all clients off unless I need em open I don't background run tasks. This is mainly due to the fact I spend time playing games, some doing text books but most listening to sfx and audio drama I don't want to have to answer messages. Guess also since when I am playing a game, that is what I am doing and thus have no problem shutting off Jaws. You know I am not getting Email, instant messages or other applications trying to bother me while I am playing that I might need a screen reader such as Jaws to be active. Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey babble report for All of 2010 part 2
Hi Shiny protector, I'm not sure what was up. This was the third time that I sent those babble and thread messages to the list. The first time was 6:00 AM January first. Maybe the list server partied too hard New Years Eve and lost my posts. My Email program down loads all of my Email into one text file. AT&T Crystal reads me that text file in a continuous manner. Once I am done with it, another program sorts that text file and appends all of the messages from the Audyssey list into an Audyssey list file. Then another program produces the reports from the Audyssey list text file. I save each months Audyssey text file, combine it and then can produce the yearly reports. It is really all pretty much automatic with the programs that I have written to do the work. BFN Jim The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. j...@kitchensinc.net http://www.kitchensinc.net (440) 286-6920 Chardon Ohio USA --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
