True enough. Who knows. Another funny one is at least 2 of my phones, with talks on them have had the british version of the eloquence voice on them, and while I prefer it, quite a few other guys this side say they prefer the american version of eloquence on their phones - I think I prefer it since the pronunciation is slightly closer to ours this side, but maybe they prefer the american version since it's what most of us run on our PCs. In fact a lot of old scifi tended to have them I think (there were certainly a few in dr. who). Then of course there were the old robotic voices which quite honestly didn't have! a gender. this was imho one of the things which made the original cybermen from the 2nd doctor era and the daleks so inhuman. Re: [Audyssey] Community Game-building Project
Why is the game unbeatable? For people not getting tired of it? lol Just curious. Ryan -- Original Message -- From: Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com To: Gamers Discussion list Gamers@audyssey.org Subject: [Audyssey] Community Game-building Project Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2011 15:50:49 -0500 Well, there has been much talk in the past about a game building project that many people can participate in. Well, I've begun one. Now, here's where the rubber meets the road. Here is where we'll see if gamers are all talk about this subject or if they add their own ideas. The game So far, here is the game, designed in VB6. Yes, it's archaic or whatever, but it's what I know. Wanna translate it? Go ahead. Anyway, the basic idea is that you and a friend just got a couple of those new battle copters, you know, the ones you fly around the house? Well, you're in a living room that's about ten feet high, and 20 by 20. You fly your chopper around the room, trying to shoot down your friend before he gets you. The Trim: Now, you're not the only one that flies this helicopter, because you have a young brother/sister/cousin that plays with it, so every time you start the game you'll need to adjust the trim to 0. To adjust it, use the home and end keys. As you adjust it, you'll hear the clicking of a knob that seems to move around your head. When it gets to 0, the sound of the knob turning will change and be directly in front of you. To fly, hold down the page up key to gain altitude. Since you're flying a helicopter, the faster the rotors turn, the higher it goes. As you increase in height, your velocity in that direction also increases. If you get going too fast you'll smash against the ceiling, and your chopper will fall. You get about ten smashes before it's unusable. Also, page down will slow the rotors, making the chopper descend. You can show off to your friend by landing the chopper on your head, but that takes a lot of work and a little luck. Use left and right arrows to turn, and up and down arrows to fly forward and backward. If you're in range, a target beep sounds, indicating that you're in range to shoot the other copter down. Turn with the left and right arrows until the beeps are in front of you, then shoot with the space bar. If you get him, it's your point--but if he shoots you down, it's his point. In either case, the shot chopper will float down to the ground, and both will respawn at their starting locations, but will retain their former altitudes. The enemy chopper starts out very slow. It always comes after you, but the first little while it is slow. This allows you to adjust your trim, get used to flying and so on. Every time you shoot him though, he flies a bit faster. Eventually, he will outfly and outgun you no matter how good you think you are. Yep, another unbeatable game from DreamTech! (You wouldn't really wanna be able to win now, would ya?) Now, there are obstacles in the room, but you can smash 'em if you want. The first is a TV, which is playing some weird music when the game starts. To smash it, simply fly at an altitude of three feet or less, and go after it. More obstacles, such as lamps, are coming. Controls: Page up for ascend, page down for descend, home and end adjust trim, left and right arrows for turning, a says your current angle, x says your current coordinates, v says your velocity, and space bar fires your gun. Note: This game is not only to be a community project, but it's an early early beta. I've only been working on it for about two weeks now, but there are a couple things to fix. The ones I know are the frequency of the targeting beeps, and the way velocity is spoken--will be integers soon. I know this, and I'll be working on them--but remember, you can too. Also, realize that working with 3d audio isn't nearly as easy as panning and volume--well, it wasn't in the beginning. Now though, that you have a foundation to build on, it should be very simple. I've included a book on programming vb6 that I found on the net, as well as a couple tutorials on 3d audio by Jack Hoxley. Before I tell you where to get the file, I want to encourage developers that programming isn't the only essential here. Sounds and music are crucial too, so if you want to make sounds or music but don't have a clue about programming, you can join in as well. The sound for Heli, your chopper, is basically a motor sound with the sound of a chain saw mixed in. The sky's the limit when it comes to imagination. (Yeah, I know it sounds silly, but wait till you hear it!) OK. Here's the link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13071564/heli.zip Now, if you want to be a part of this, get a Dropbox account and let me know. I'll invite you, and our game folders will always be linked, so that I'll instantly know about any changes you make. Ken Downey President DreamTechInteractive! And, Blind Comfort! The pleasant

Re: [Audyssey] eloquence was, Re: Screen reader support in BGT
Well, not sure either, but, yes, if I want to, for example, render a text file into an audio book, in english, I use scansoft daniel (UK), and for something like afrikaans, I then use the eSpeak afrikaans voice, but anyway. Think I'm just too used to the US eloquence voice for most things, but I do add various dictionary pronounciation entries to it for things like my surname, and a few other nicknames for other people sometimes. I got your message. sevgiler saygilar - Original Message - From: Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com To: Gamers Discussion list Gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, January 21, 2011 4:07 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Heli I sent a message to the list earlier today, but I'm not seeing it. Basically, I've begun a community project for all you programmers, sound and music designers. This is the first freeware open-source game the blind community has which uses 3d audio--or it better be. If it's not then I've worked my butt off reinventing the wheel.. It's coded in VB6 and uses directx 8. The game can be found at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13071564/heli.zip It's in very early public beta, and I probably am already working on any errors you find, but let me know about them anyway. Here is the manual. Welcome to Heli, the virtual toy helicopter you can fly! There has been much talk in the past about a game building project that many people can participate in. When it gets to 0, the sound of the knob turning will change. If you don't adjust the trim, the helicopter will fly around in circles--which you may want to do sometimes. Now turn with the left and right arrow keys and fly forwards or backwards with the up and down arrows. You can show off to your friend by landing the chopper on your head, but that takes a lot of work and a little luck. If you're in range of your opponent, a target beep sounds, indicating that you're in range to shoot the other copter down. Turn with the left and right arrows until the beeps are in front of you, then shoot with the space bar. If you get him, it's your point--but if he shoots you down, it's his point. In either case, the shot chopper will float down to the ground, and both will respawn at their starting locations. Controls: Page up for ascend, page down for descend, home and end adjust trim, left and right arrows for turning, up and down arrows for moving, a says your current angle, x says your current coordinates, v says your velocity, and space bar fires your gun. Note: This game is not only to be a community project, but it's an early early beta. I've only been working on it for two weeks now, but there are many things to add and fix, such as the frequency of the targeting beeps. I want to encourage developers that programming isn't the only essential here. Sounds and music are crucial too, so if you want to make sounds or music but don't have a clue about programming, you can join in as well. The sound for Heli, your chopper, is basically a motor sound with the sound of a chain saw mixed in. The
Re: [Audyssey] Screen reader support in BGT
Hmmm, I've always been a litle confused as to why you'd want to run a screen reader like Jaws or hal thru sapi anyway, unless you have some very unusual voices which your screen reader didn't support at all, though that would stil be something of a resource drain I think than just having the screen reader output to the voice directly. That is however something entirely different from a game outputting to a screen reader. Beware the grue! When it gets to 0, the sound of the knob turning will change. If you don't adjust the trim, the helicopter will fly around in circles--which you may want to do sometimes. Note: This game is not only to be a community project, but it's an early early beta. I've only been working on it for two weeks now, but there are many things to add and fix, such as the frequency of the targeting beeps. I want to encourage

Well speaking for myself I agree with the person who said we are dealing with an imperfect situation here. I too am one of those who purchased the preorder from Alchemy way back in the day which by the way I never do and never will again other than for mainstream titles, but this game just sounded too cool. When Alchemy went away I was fully prepared to eat my 35 bucks or whatever it was. I was totally jazzed when Tom took the project over. Sure it is frustrating having to wait several years for this to turn out, but frankly anyone who gives Tom a hard time about this has a heck of a lot of nerve in my view, because 99 times out of a hundred they'd've just been out the 35 bucks and that would have been that. So Tom, do it the way you want to, I've waited this long I can wait a little longer. as you surely know by now you're never gonna please everyone no matter what you do so you may as well do it the way you want to. [Audyssey] Raceway was Mysteries of the Ancients
Hi, You know, it is comments exactly like yours that people don't like to create games for the VI community. When a certain title doesn't appear on the spot, immediately on demand, they resort to name calling, make false statements, and outright call the developer of said product a liar. However, since you brought it up I'll answer your question directly. As far as USA Raceway goes it is still in development. As I have told you and plenty of others many times before I could create USA Raceway, Mysteries of the Ancients, or anything else I had to create a game engine to handle all the low-level stuff such as input, audio, networking, window management, etc. In short all the common core features you would normally find in any game. Rather than rewrite all of that stuff from scratch time and time again I did exactly the same thing Philip Bennefall is doing and wrote a game engine called Genesis 3D, G3D, which will aid me in producing games much quicker and will aid me in upgrading and maintaining games throughout the lifetime of the product or products. So why isn't USA Raceway done? Think about it a moment. If I have just spent something like two years writing the Genesis 3D Engine, spent some time working on Mysteries of the Ancients, where have I had the time to produce and release a demo of Raceway? Finally, you are forgetting something else. Sounds, music, acting, etc doesn't come for free unless you pirate it. Since I'm not about to pirate my material for Raceway that means I'm going to have to sell Mysteries of the Ancients in order to raise the money to acquire better sounds etc for Raceway. The sounds and music James North gave me are not very high quality. Actually, they suck if you ask me. You want crappy music and sounds, or would you rather be patient and wait for me to do a better job? Point is calling me a liar, saying the game is a very big lie, is absolutely unconstructive. You absolutely have no idea how much work I've put into these projects. You absolutely have no clue how much pressure people have put on me to produce these projects on some totally unrealistic time table. If you or anyone else think it is so dang easy I want you to do it yourself. Yes, I mean learn C++, write your own fully qualified game engine like BGT or G3D, and then write two extremely advanced games all in two or three years. Plus on top of that you need to find time to help raise your son, go to work, eat, sleep, watch a little TV, read a good book, and find a life while producing these projects. Does that sound a bit crazy? Well, it is. Re: [Audyssey] Screen reader support in BGT
Hi Dark, Sorry, you lost me there. Why wouldn't a screen reader use Sapi 5 voices rather than trying to support each and every voice out their directly? I mean the entire purpose of Microsoft providing the Sapi 5 com library is so that developers would have a single API to access various speech systems like Microsoft Sapi, ATT, Cepstral, Careproc, etc all from one interface. Otherwise you are talking about having to write a custom wrapper or middleware for each and every single speech engine out there on the market when you don't have too. So your comments royally confuses me. On 1/21/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hmmm, I've always been a litle confused as to why you'd want to run a screen reader like Jaws or hal thru sapi anyway, unless you have some very unusual voices which your screen reader didn't support at all, though that would stil be something of a resource drain I think than just having the screen reader output to the voice directly. That is however something entirely different from a game outputting to a screen reader. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Heli
By the way, I updated the link just now. I added a couple changes, as well as a compiled executable. Only big bug I see is that the angle for hitting the TV with your gun doesn't work right, and possibly that means the targeting for the opponent is off too. If you really want to get whipped, smash the TV and he'll really get mad and kick your tail. I think I gave him too much speed for that event though, so I'll probably fix that next time. Meanwhile, if you think he's moving too slow, just shoot him to get respawned--or you can do this as soon as you start. When you're at 0,1 and near the ground, turn until you're facing about 215 degrees then shoot your gun. Nowhere near the TV--that's the bug I mentioned. It'll shoot it for now though, so you can speed the enemy radically. Shoot it six times and he'll be moving along quite nicely. Remember, this bug won't last long though, so enjoy it while you have it! Ken Downey President DreamTechInteractive! And, Blind Comfort! The pleasant way to experience massage! People don't think about how crazy it is when they send me e-mails accuse me of lying, fooling around, goofing off, not producing a game like Raceway on their own time table, whatever. Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was Mysteries of the Ancients
While I can understand you being incredibly annoyed at this sort of comment Tom (heck I would be), I will point out that Burac is Tirkish, eleven years old and does not have the best English, - though it has significantly improved from when he first turned up on audiogames.net. I suspect he used google translator for this, and big lie in the sense of falsehood, immoral action wasn't what he meant to say. I would guess it was something more along the lines of: is the write up on your page correct that raceway is stil in developement? Rather than making an accusation. All the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Mysteries of the Ancients Levels
Hi Tom. I'm not sure about batman, though to be perfectly honest the graphics are so universally dark in that game I've always found it slightly difficult to play. T2002 has actually recieved some quite severe cryticism about the level size, indeed it's a sort of standing joke that a true Turrican fan will welcome the large size where as anyone who isn't will complain about it ;D. We've discussed the audio vertical movement business before, sinse that's for me always been one of the most revolutionary things about Mota, and I'm glad that will be expanded to something more complete. Dark wrote: The game is simple, and the game's goal, blow up enemies, find power ups, look for the exit, is equally simple, however the execution of this is far more complex simply because the levels are such huge mazes. My reply: So I gather. Of course I wasn't planning on making Mysteries of the Ancients quite so large. Obviously, since the inspiration is Tomb Raider I expect the levels will be more on par with the Tomb Raider side-scrollers like Nightmare Stone and Prophecy for the Nintendo Gameboy. Dark wrote: As i said, shades of doom deffinately shared some of this feeling, particularly in not being restricted in progress, but I've yet to see an audio side scroller that even comes close. My reply: Yeah, I haven't seen one either. Part of it is up until now most side-scrollers like Super Liam, Tarzan Junior, Q9, etc were restricted to a 1d platform run/jump left/right type format. Mysteries of the Ancients at least offers a virticle movement allowing me to create some very large levels both left/right and up/down. Should be interesting.
