well the engine is quite stable and sounds are real cool. At 11:26 a.m. 26/05/2011, you wrote: Hi Phil, As Willem and I were just discussing off list the issue is that FMOD and DirectSound use two completely different mathematical scales to pan sounds and control volume. DirectSound uses a Linear scale to roll off where FMOD, OpenAL, and XAudio2 use a Logarithmic scale to roll off. What I'm going to have to eventually do is create a linniar to Logarithmic converter which will allow me to pan sounds similar to DirectSound but convert them to a Logarithmic setting. Its probably not that hard to do, but I wanted to see how well the new engine worked in general before attending to these miner issues like this. Of course, as usual the winers and complainers decided to focus on this one single issue and run with it. They are making a bigger deal out of this than it marets. The game is certainly playable as is, and eventually I'm certain I'll find a decent conversion from DirectSound to FMOD. It just requires a bit of patients and understanding from the community at large. I'm getting neither. Instead I'm getting swamped with moaning, growning, and complaining about it. Re: [Audyssey] mota
Hi, I'd like to say a few things about what I experienced when trying the latest beta of mota. First and foremost the change of the sound library seriously does affect accouracy of positioning of sounds relative to you. Best examples for this are collectable objects like torches in level 1. I had to walk over and over the same spot several times until I could collect one while in all the atempts it sounded like the item was centered in my stereo field. The second thing I noticed is that when I walk, not run, the sounds of objects like torches is not immediately adjusted, once i make a move. The last Beta adjusted sound volumes better. There it was like a gradual flowing process. You enter a room and hear something at the other end. You step forward, the thing gets a bit louder per step. You back out, it gets quieter until you are out of range. Now, it is noticeably more a harder change. You step into one direction and with a time delay you suddenly hear it louder as if you turned the volume up several units instead of a small unit instead. The next thing with sounds is in regards to collecting objects. When you use a torch in a dark room, you can see objects otherwhise hidden. However if you're lucky, you might collect an object without seeing it by usage of a torch. For collecting objects you press the enter key. Now I have found out that when I am walking and am holding the key down for walking and am pressing the enter key to collect any object, that the walking sound slows down, but when I am running and doing the same, I don't seem to loose speed. And the last thing in this version I am wondering about is that in five or six times I played the beta I had encountered at least one poisonous creature within the first ten rooms every time I played. Unfortunately I was not allways available to evade their attacks and thus I got hit several times, but it seems that there was (in my oppinion) a lack of any potions in the first part of level 1 while I tryed it at least six times in a row. Re: [Audyssey] mota
i may trya dn put linux on to my imac under fusion if i can work out why i can't get it to work at the moment then to play on the mac On 25 May 2011, at 22:20, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Will, First, I understand your frustration, but you must have missed my message to Phil about my plans for beta 20 which will likely be 1.0 rc1. What I mean by that is now that I have finally merged the Windows G3D Engine and the Linux G3D Engine into a single cross-platform engine I can focus my attention specifically on levels 3 through 12, adding the game registration, etc. All of that shouldn't take more than a month. As I also said I'm looking for a mid summer release schedule. So you aren't going to be deaf, old, and gray before this thing comes out. I can pretty much say end of Auggest latest. Second, the problem with using the G3D 2.0 Windows engine and finishing MOTA using that is that the 2.0 engine and the 3.0 engine are not fully compatible. There are a number of differences in the types of parameters required to initialize certain functions, pan sounds, set volume, whatever. For instance, the FMOD Ex API which I have integrated into the G3D 3.0 cross-platform engine has a volume range of 0.0, off, to 1.0 full volume. DirectSound, via Streemway, used in the 2.0 engine has a volume range of 0, full volume, and -1, off. There is no easy way to wrap the volume controls and make them take the same range of parameters without a lot of extra effort. The bottom line here is that with differences like that in the two versions of the G3D Engine it is going to dramatically slow down development because I'll essentually be developing two different versions of the game instead of one. Any changes I make to the Windows version of the game I'll have to repete in the non-Windows version of the game. Meaning double the time, work, and effort to create the game. Not the ideal situation. And I know what you are going to say. Why not completely forget about Mac, Linux, etc and just create the Windows version? Simple. I'm no longer using Windows full time. I've already decided I am not paying tu upgrade to the next version of Microsoft Windows, and Windows 7 is basically the last version I intend to own unless I get a copy with a new PC. Otherwise my future will be on a Linux PC, and I'm looking at buying a Mac instead of a PC next time around. So Windows is history as far as I am concerned. At most I'll use Windows via Fusion, Bootcamp, VMWare, or something like that for the apps and games I've already purchased, but me Windows are going our separate ways, and because of that I intend to take my games and other software projects with me to the new platform. Otherwise if I can't do that there is absolutely no point in writing them. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it is reality. I'm not going to put time into creating games and other software specifically for Windows users only to end up rewriting them from scratch for myself. That's not only stupid that's utterally pointless if there is a way to design the software product to meet the needs of Windows users as well as my needs as well. I've actually done that with the Genesis 3D 3.0 engine. The game runs identically on Windows and Linux, and expect with a bit of tweeking and a few bug fixes will be a decent cross-platform engine. Why would I throw the lass two months of work away just to pander to the Windows users? Hi Cary. You've actually got the right idea here, you just need to implement it a bit more ruthlessly. What I did myself was keep pressing x, and the moment I had ten power, kill a mouse (ten to kill and twenty to sell, so you can kill them faster). I kept up with this each time I had ten power, and after a short time had got rid of all the mice, which not only let my rabbit population grow, but also gave me the chance to plant more trees and thus create more moss which is the rabbit's preferd food. that tactic made mission three fairly easy. Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hi Tom. I've personally always found the left/right distinction fairly odd in games, but that's probably because I'm used to a lot of mucking about. On keyboards mostly games use the arrow keys, or j k l i to move around which are obviously on the right, -- though most of Che's blind adrenaline card games use keys on the other side all with the left hand. when however I'm playing console games with my arcade stick, the stick is (as in most arcade machines), on the left and the buttons on the right, so i'm used to moving about with my left hand and shooting, jumping or whatever with the right. Indeed, Mega man aniversery collection was heavily cryticized in the media sinse it had no way of configuring keyboard keys, and unlike most mega man games used x or circle (depending on console), as jump, and x or y ass shoot so that your jumping with the left button and shooting with the middle, rather than the other way around. The funny thing is, because I'm playing on a huge arcade stick it's just a question of me using one finger instead of another, which isn't too difficult, but then again this is why I strongly dislike modern joypads sinse they completely ignore most of your fingers and force you to use your thumbs for nearly everything if your holding them correctly which to me is totally unnatural, I'd rather use all! my fingers together for whatever buttons are convenient, which is why I probably am less tied to a specific keyboard layout generally. I myself am running a notebook most of the time and the del, insert, home, end, and page up/down keys are nowhere near each other making Red Dragon impossible to play on my laptop configuration. That said, you know what I think would be even better? I think we should add some sort of custom keyboard profiler that would allow people to remap the keys. The reason I say that is I've had a few request over the past couple of years to make some way to map keys as some people are lefties etc and wwould rather use something like a, s, d, and w to move around. That makes sense to me and could be acomplished by remapping j, k, l, and i to the other side of the home row. What do you think? Cheers! The only voice I can hear clear enough when playing audio games is the british English Daniel one. Mind you, In terms of playing Alter Aeon, I find the sounds on mush good but spammy. I have the mush-z client, so I pointed it to the site and it connected fine, but I had to use the mouse to read the output window, something that's done automatically when I play Alteraeon. I'm using NVDA, and I need to know what to do to configure Magica to read automatically. Also, how do I turn the volume of sounds down in Alteraeon? [Audyssey] Lunimals 2.2b
Hey guys, I've just posted version 2.2b which has a few bug fixes and a few new requested features. In haven't added in mission 10 yet, but these changes were enough that I felt it was worthy of posting. I've fixed that troublesome bug that would keep you from playing a new game immediately after losing one. Turned out it was a typo. I've added sounds to indicate land and water tiles, so that goes faster. Finally, I've added support for background music! There is now a music sub folder for the game. Take your favorite music files and name them music1.mp3 up to music10.mp3 and put them into the music sub folder. Lunimals will detect the music files and will play them throughout the game. It will always start with the lowest number file, but after that it randomly chooses from among the files. The Pause key allows you to pause and unpause the music, and the Home key picks a new random song. I didn't include any music files, so for those interested, here is a collection of really great background music taken from the mainstream game MorrowWind. www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/morrowwindmusic.zip --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] game installation curiosity
HI Shaun, Well, regardless if you read the End User License Agreement or not once you check the I Agree checkbox and click Next you are legally bound by that license. If you are found violating the license you can be legally sued for breech of license if you get caught breaking the license terms. That's why it is a good idea to at least read the license once to get an idea of what is in it. As far as the readability of the license agreements they really are not that bad. I know I took great care when writing my license to make the terms clear and as understandable as possible while frazing it in legal terms. I think it is the legal lingo that throws most people, but they have to be written that way to stand up in a court of law. There is an official/legal way they have to be frazed just like contracts etc are written up. that is in lawyer speak. Smile. On 5/26/11, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: Hmmm thats true. Re: [Audyssey] game installation curiosity
Hi Harmony, I resent that comment. As a commercial software developer myself I can say the license agreement is not a piece of junk. It is a legal contract between me and the end users of my product. If they agree to those terms, weather they read it or not, they are legally bound to the contract. It legally protects me and my product from people steeling my ideas, product, intelectual copyrights, etc. Maybe that doesn't matter to you since you aren't the one developing the product, have something to lose by having someone steel your ideas and products, but anyone who creates software for a living do have something to lose. That's why we create these special contracts, the end user license, so everybody knows exactly what the legal terms of use are regarding the software. To explain how we software developers feel about this imagine yourself in a similar situation. Say you have a special hobby like writing stories or you like composing music. One day you write a best selling novel or compose a song good enough to be on the top 10 charts. Now, say some loser without an ounce of talent comes along and writes a book like your best seller and makes millions on your idea, or some disreputable musician takes your top 10 song and performs it without your permission putting himself or herself on the top 10 charts. Wouldn't you be angry, upset, and just a bit ready to sue or take action against the other party for not only using your ideas without your permission but making money off something that belongs to you? That's why contracts and end user license agreements exist. It protects the companies or persons intelectual and physical copyrights to their ideas, products, and so on. True, sometimes copyright owners abuse their legal rights, but over all it works. It helps lay down the legal terms in which the ideas, media, etc may be used. Cheers!
